Very organized, fun teaching style, and incredibly helpful. The easiest way to learn the subject.
My favorite college professor so far. I took him for Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Very entertaining. Made class fun and explained things in a very clear way.
The best Teacher yet to have, he is the best, Explains everything clearly, makes everything Fun, made me more intrested in the subject, very great one on one, and very great in class..

The best instructor I've ever had at both the JC and Cal State level. If all instructors were like Dewey, college would be a breeze!!! Highly recommend! Easy A!!!
Very Intellectual teacher. Knows what he's talking about and knows how to teach it. Overall, a teacher that everyone should take.
Funny guy, and he makes the material really interesting, especially with all the activities he makes up. I even subscribe to The Economist now, and I understand it. Little hint, if there is a strong personality in the class, he will play with their mind. If they're Liberal, he'll be Conservative, and vice versa.
Excellent teacher. Explains the subject thoroughly and understandably. Has fun interactive in class activities to make the subject matter more interesting and applicable.
Heinsma is very focused and definetely knows his****! However, he picks people he likes to participate in class and ignores the rest. Some of the test and worksheet questions are unclear and he gives very little mercy. He is always right, no matter what... I was sooooo excited when he actually gave me credit for a quesiton that could have been taken 2 ways. Usually, your S.O.L. Anyway, here's a tip from an A student. If you need to miss a class, don't miss this one! It can really make a difference!!
Truly an inpsiration to become a teacher. He really knows his stuff. Yes, he will choose his favorites, but he will notice those that he doesn't pick on often. If you're an Immature Freshman, he will probably pick on you more than the rest. If you are a great suckup, you'll be gettin the grade you deserve because of it.
dewey is tight!
yea dewey is a cool teacher.. he looks like the captain from star trek lol.. the beginning of the class was easy but it got harder.. lil hint dont miss any of the classes.. you will pay with a low grade!!!
Dewey Heinsma was the hardest teacher I ever took His expectations were high too. Somtimes I taught I was in a Masters program.

**** Dewey. Very hard prof, very high expectations, don’t get on his bad side or he will be even more ridged, not the type of person to help you out in a needy situation. Find another Econ teacher period!
Dewey has some high expecations and expects you to learn a lot fo it yourself. He does teach, but very little compared to other professors. All his stuff is online, aplia and blackboard. Funny guy, can be kind of a spaz sometimes. lol. Had betetr professors but he wasn't too bad. Some of the work will be hard!! So be prepared!! "B" overall.
Great teacher.. Makes economics fun. He is very helpful. Always in a good mood. Very patient. Nice, nice, nice...............................................................................
I took this class online and i have never been good with this subject and i loved this class. you used the book a lot but i only bought the online book and was totally fine. you can really see this teachers great personality even through online. really nice guy
Awesome teacher! Really knows how to reach and interact with his students. He does so in a fun, very professional manor. Seems to be a well-rounded, moral, exceptional teacher.
What a bunch of winers in here! I finished my B.S. degree at CSUSB and still.....Dewey Heinsma IS the best instructor I have had the privilege to learn from. He was crystal clear from the passing out of the syllabus to handing in the final exam.
had him for both 201 and 202. was my favorite teacher. It was fun. enjoyed every minute of class. brings out funny things like light-sabers, TP, plastic toys, cards, etc. I'm a biz major. This stuff was easy for me. Some may have had trouble but if your read the chapters and listen in class. You will do just fine.
i am a science major n took econ just in curiosity.he is the best youthful teacher i have ever seen.Professional, fair. makes econ so funny and easy. reaches to students and perfectly no communication gap. knows his students and the subject.
Great professor! Although you don't get a feel for personality through online classes, you can tell that he knows how to help people understand the subject matter by choosing appropriate subjects for the discussion board and a fairly relatable text book. Had a great first online experience thanks to him! :)
Overall an amazing professor and a great class. I took the class just for the units but ended up loving it. It is somewhat of a hard class but Dewey offers "Jam sessions" where he allows for extra help if needed. Hes also pretty hilarious and I definitely recommend this class.
I took this class online. Pretty easy class if you do your work but it is a lot of work. Quizes every week on Aplia where you can use your text book.
Absolutely best teacher ever!!!!! I was not really interested in the subject, but he made it interesting. He had the right measure of fun and friendliness, while still teaching a great class. Kind, warm, and helpful in all communications. Truly the BEST!
He is a great teacher. The lectures aren't too important, they do have the information for the tests (weekly on aplia)but all you need is the book next to you, to refer to specific pages, which can be found rather easily. I paid little attention to the lecture and was able to get an A in the class. His pointing stick is a light saber...take him.
i took the class online, such an amazing professor. responds to your emails asap. plus there is a jam session so you can ask him questions directly if you dont understand. definitly one of the great professor that i would definitly recommend you to take. makes the class easy just read your book do you assignments and tests and its an easy A.
SUUUPER cake class. Online class has a discussion question per week you respond to, and you also read someone else's and reply to theirs the next day. CAKE. Problem sets due each Saturday, and exams on Sunday. You can take the exam 3X and he'll keep the best score. Never needed to study the book before exams or problem sets. Aaand... NO FINAL!
Pretty easy class. Even though it wasn't an online class almost everything was online. Lectures in person and everything else online. Dewey was fun and entertaining.
Great teacher! Makes class fun and interesting. He is a bit of a dork, but tries to connect and make material relevant. Work is online, all homework, tests and final. Use the Aplia text book search function! Makes all work easier! I never used the print book, just the one in Aplia. Can take quizes and homework multiple times. Fair grader.
easy online class, discussion questions due every week, and chapter test every week as well, every thing is out of the book so read it!
Awesome professor. I was not interested in econ going into this class, but he made the class EXTREMELY fun, and his example are helpful and hilarious. If you are taking Econ then look no further.
This guy is the business. Seriously, if you're going to take an econ class, take his; don't even question it. He's super nice, helpful, and interactive, as well as always trying to make the concepts more interesting through the weekly discussions. There are weekly tests, hw, and DB's, but once you get the hang of it, it's cake. GO!! He's the best!
I took the Economan online and loved him. He is a great teacher and very responsive when you have a question. You are given three tries for both the weekly homework assignments and the quizzes keeping the best score NOT the last score.
I took Heinsma for micro and macroeconomics online. An exam and discussion is required weekly. The discussions are easy, but the exams can be hard; however, with that being said you do get three tries for each exam and it's open-book. I found the online books to be more helpful than the physical books. Somewhat of an easy grader.
ima keep it nice and sweet. GET THIS TEACHER!!!!get him. easy easy easy teacher. hes funny and keeps the class alive with jokes and knowledge. I showed up to his class every day and he likes to sneak extra credit every once in awhile. if you really want an A for this class take every test try. he gives three trys per test every week. but there easy
I took the Economan online and loved him. He is very quick to respond when you send him an email. You get three tries for both the weekly homework assignments and the quizzes keeping the best score NOT the last score. A plus is he slips in extra credit work once in a while which helps with grades. I would highly recommend him for any class!
I would highly recommend taking this course online, as showing up to class was completely, and utterly, useless. (Even though attendance is mandatory.) You'd have to read the textbook either way. Weekly chapter exams and quizzes were easy for me.
His classes are really engaging and fun and he makes it very easy to understand. Work load is completely tolerable and all online. He also allows you 3 attempts at your online exams. If you pay attention, it's easy to get an A in this class.
Professor Heinsma is awesome! Responds to emails fairly quickly and is pretty clear on what needs to be done each week. Have a question or don't understand something, he is there to help! One chapter a week, one HW assigment a week,a 25 question test a week and one discussion a week, gives 3 attempts on the tests. Will be having him for Econ202!
He kept class fun and light. I barely opened my book the whole semester, his lectures are great. Pay attention in class and you should pass just fine. Assigns a problem set in cengage and a quiz in blackboard every week per chapter to do at home. no midterm or final but a final was listed on syllabus. I intend to take him again for 201 in the Fall
Prof Heinsma was very helpful and his online class is pretty clear and understandable. I took both of his Econ 201 and 202 classes online. He responds fairly quickly when you have a question. Weekly discussion, HW assignment, and test with one chapter to read each week. If you are interested in this subject, you wont mind the read.
I took Heinsma for Econ 201 online. If you do the Cengage homework assignments, which can be a pain at times, you will have no problem passing the weekly tests. Heinsma has students do weekly discussions which, I think, grades on an easier scale. As long as you understand the Econ concepts you will pass the class. I would retake him again!
Mr. Heinsma is a great professor. He is really passionate about his lectures and finds dorky ways to make the lectures more interesting. The homework and exams are super easy.
I enjoyed this class. There is a discussion board, Cengagebrain assingment and a quiz every week. Not hard at all if you read the text book that is provided on the cengagebrain. Make sure you do all the work and you will pass with an A.
I didn't know what to expect for Macroeconomic class, but I'm glad I chose Professor Heinsma as a teacher. If the class isn't getting a concept he'll stop and explain it until everyone gets it. Homework and quizzes are both online. Questions are anywhere between 7-10 for hw, and 25 for the quiz per week. I can't wait for his micro class.
Great lecturer but heavy online homework with weekly assessments and video quizzes along with a homework assignment, class is more difficult than I thought it would be I would not recommend taking if you don't have to.
This is a teacher who is both more knowledgeable and passionate about their field than any other teacher I have taken at MSJC. You have to do an assignment every week, but it is plainly laid out for you, and he happily answers all homework questions.
Homework assignments are due every week. Lots of reading but if you study, you'll do well.
Great teacher! Learned a lot...
Dewey is a great professor who actually inspired me to change my major from finance to economics. Economics is not always a fun or easy subject for most, but professor Heinsma does a great job at making sure everyone understands the material that is presented. Show up to class, do the work, you will pass with no issues, and even learn something.
Homework assignments are due every week. Lots of reading but if you study, you'll do well. Econ is tough already but he does everything possible to make it a painless subject to learn. He is understanding and willing to work with you if you need it! He is really passionate about his lectures and has funny ways to make the lectures more interesting
Hate his style of teaching, mostly bulletpoint notes (not much notes even) with the occassional handout. The quizzes can be pretty difficult even though its online.
Mr. Heinsma is a great teacher. I highly recommend his class.
My favorite teacher so far! He's very personable and lively. We take notes in class and have online homework and test due at the end of the week. He gives 3 chances for test and 1.5 hr time limit. It's a very routine class. You could skip, but econ is easier to understand with someone like him explaining using reasonable terms. I HEAVILY recommend
Dewey Heinsma is a fantastic teacher. Highly recommend, he makes you laugh every morning. Do the hw and quizes with a friend if you want to score high.. otherwise read the book well and ask him if you have questions. 1 big project at the end of both semesters. Just follow examples and it's easy. Didn't have to take either final and got 2 A's.
I took the summer online class, so the pace is a bit faster. If you stay on top of the weekly discussions, reading and assignments you will get a good grade. This class is no walk in the park, but Professor Heinsma, makes it easy to understand. Hes helpful and understanding. Great teacher and great class!
I took Professor Heinsmas Econ 201 class, so the format was the same for Econ 202. I also took the shorter class, which has a faster pace with two chapters of discussions and exams. I knew what I was getting into, so just stay on top of things and read and you will do well. Exams are multiple attempt, which is a plus! Great class and teacher!
Pretty understanding and accommodating. Relies a little too much on online software to teach for him.
Mr. Heinsma uses examples in his lectures that really help you understand the topic wit real life situations. The homework was easy as well because his lectures were always stuck in my head.
This was my 2nd semester with Professor Heinsma and I'll be honest, the class is somewhat difficult. There's a lot of homework and most of the material in the homework assignments are not covered in the lectures. I felt like I couldn't pay attention because lectures either had too much info or the professor stayed on one topic for a long time.
Professor Heinsma is a gem. He is funny, caring and takes pride in helping his students reach their full potential. He gives clear instructors on what he expects from the class and is accurate and forthcoming. The weekly quizzes are very hard but as long as you study hard you will pass. Finally, he is a great person to talk to outside of class.
Teacher Heinsma is adorable and has his creative and lively character, he seems very passionate about his job. Online classes are a little bit though since you have to teach yourself, but he makes discussions so he knows what you've learned, it's a loooot of reading, a looot of homework and a loooooot of quizzes, but in the end it's worth it.
Heinsma is one of the best professors I've taken. He is natural and passionate about economics, and he is very very friendly. Since it's an online class it's mostly you, but he makes sure he's also part of your learning. You have to read a lot and practice a lot for his quizzes. There's no exams, just homework, videos and quizzes.
I took Professor Heinsma ECON 201 8-week course online. Assignments are all done online through Centage MindTap and due on Sunday's at 11:59 PM. Frequent discussion post, make sure to be aware of due dates! expect a 30 question quiz at the end of each chapter. overall he is a great professor and is available through zoom for office hours.
Professor Heinsma was great at giving economics a different view w/ a nice comedic spin. He was very accessible despite online only classes via zoom meetings, and if one needed help he was available. Grading criteria was clear, and his syllabus was followed to the T which helps to know what to expect. Discussions w/ graphs, tests, wkly assignments
Nice but wouldn't recommend this class. Doesn't grade most discussion posts until after the last day-don't expect helpful feedback. It's totally up to you to teach yourself the material - no recorded lectures or anything. Quiz & assignments are material you didn't learn in the reading. You'll have to find outside info to teach yourself.
He will help you outside of class if you're confused about anything. Solid choice if you're not great with economics. Can easily get an A if you just do the work.
This class was well organized but hard! Light workload but the textbook doesn't help you do anything. I was lost while doing homework and quizzes. However, the professor is very friendly. He has office hours all of the time to help you. Take advantage or be prepared to spend hours teaching yourself economics.
The class is easy to navigate for weekly assignments. Prepare the best you can for weekly quizzes (Cengage activities and "Learner Support Hours"). Interesting humor.
Economics is a super difficult class. Heinsma is a good prof, but we do have to learn everything on our own unless he is specifically asked to explain. All the homework and tests are learned from the book. His discussions were also difficult, and took a lot of time. But those were only every other week. Homework was not easy. Tests are heavy.
Dewey was great as a professor. The workload was pretty heavy considering I took this class in the summer (everything was shortened and it was a quicker pace). I definitely struggled with keeping my grade up but I always ended up learning what was being taught. You have to pay for the homework, it comes with the textbook. $200
8 week course was very intense. Two chapters per week and had lots of reading, hw and a 30 question quiz - for each chapter. If you are willing to devote alot of time and effort for economics, consider taking the course. However if you just need a social science credit, take a class that doesn't throw cengage at you. He was funny and responsive tho
Heinsma is a great professor! Took him for macro econ and enjoyed it so much I considered changing my major. There are no lectures, only textbook chapters, so you're teaching yourself, but he is accessible outside class and happy to answer any questions. Just do all the readings and homework (multiple attempts) and you'll get an A. Would recommend!
Full semester - 1 chapter and quiz per week via Cengage. DB every other week. No mid-term or final. Assignments are tedious. Don't do it at the last minute! Def a teach-it-yourself kind of class. If you work well under those conditions, you'll be good! If not, good luck! Very willing to help and just an overall nice guy!
I took his hybrid class. He was a super upbeat professor! who really takes the time to teach and explain the concepts. He is also very organized and usually replies within 24 hours.
He's alright tbh. I took him for the 8-week course for Spring 2023 and it was alright. There are two Cengage homework assignments and two 30 questions quizzes every week. There are 5 discussions that are completed throughout the course. I missed about 2 or 3 homework assignments and if I didn't I probably could've gotten an A in the class.
If you read, and do the practice questions the class will be easy and straightforward. It was easy to understand, but due dates are crucial in this class.
Very straightforward professor. I personally work very well with his style of teaching but it may not work for everyone. Very hands-off and basically teaching yourself. He tells you what he wants, you do it! Pretty simple and easy! 4th time I have taken classes with him! CENGAGE IS REQUIRED! 1 chapt/week 1 quiz 1 homework 1 db (every other week)
Professor Heinsma is pretty thorough. Assignments are done in Cengage and Canvas as well as a discussion board every other week or so. No extra credit, but we didnt even take a final exam, just plowed through all the assignments so do that and you'll be fine. Getting ready to take him again for ECON-202.
We're 6 weeks into the 8 weeks course and he has yet to grade ANY discussions. He doesn't provide any feedback. He is not engaged with the class at all. I wish he would grade the weekly discussions in a timely manner so we could adjust our following discussions with any corrections or adjustments. ALL cengage assignments & 2 quizzes weekly
Second time taking him and was he was pretty good. Communicates well and is organized. Bi-weekly discussions, weekly assignments in Cengage and Quiz in Canvas. Modules contain a lot of resources to help and he responds to emails. A bit flexible for late assignments as long as you reach out to him. Would take again.
dont take, he sucks. didn't grade any of the discussions until the last week so I didnt know if I was doing them right all semester. each week had 1 discussion & 2 quizzes, that were 30 questions each and you have 3 attempts but get new questions each time & cant see what answers are correct, plus 2 long+hard assignments on Cengage, which was $130
Loved this class so much. Highly recommend!
Do NOT recommend. Take only if it's your absolute last option—and even then, think twice. All the negative reviews are true. He doesn't teach; everything is done through Cengage, which is expensive, glitchy, rigid, and not user-friendly. If you're an A student, expect a C or D. If you're a B or lower student, you'll likely fail.
Avoid this class at all costs. Total mess of a class. Confusing, stressful, and not worth your time or money.
Extremely easy class for 8 week summer and if you want credit. You just do a homework assignment from Cengage, quiz, and discussion board every week. A learn it yourself course, and I do enjoy how he makes his announcements and descriptions funny. His feedback on discussion boards is obviously ChatGPT though, but he's an extremely easy grader.
This was an amazing class, and the professor does a great job of giving you the material you need to pass. If you stay on top of your work consistently, it is an easy pass. If I was ever confused, I reached out to him, and he clarified everything till I was confident. Totally recommended!
just take his class. he is so funny and down to earth. he is ready to explain anything you need. only two assignments a week. engage is required but this for all Econ classes not just him. its an easy A plus a fantastic teacher, win win.
