Teaches as if students taking speech due to requirement should find speech and forensics to be the most important thing in their life. Obviously doesn't know her audience. Also gets into self important stories way too much.
This class wasn't the least bit practical. Too bad it's a requirement.

I took her course for the winter '02 two week intersection course. You will work your hard for 10 days, but even if you get low scores on the 2 tests, you can still make it up on the 3 speech projects. She graded more fairly because it was a 2 week course.
BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD! excellent class, SO many extra credit opportunities, dont even need to take the final w so much e.c. if you do your work theres no way to get anything but an A
control freak is an understatement. she's made speech her life and expects you too also.
this was supposed to be an intro to speech but since she was the head of the speech team she thought she was teaching her speech them. avoid this teacher if possible.....ugh
she thinks shes gods gift to speech and college in general. she uses too many self anecdotes. do i care if her mom was a speech teacher? this is a required course and i suggest you seek her fiance who is conveniently the head of her department as atea

She loves what she does and she'll keep you awake and entertained for a three hour night class. There is a ridiculous amount of extra credit.
To quote the Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons": "WORST. TEACHER. EVAR!" Talks about this site in class and very self absorbed teacher. Do not take her unless you wish to feel pain and anguish.
If you want to learn something - take this teacher. As head of the forensics department, she teaches a more structured format than others, but that is what I will need. She preps you well for the tests. Plenty of extra credit.
Took the 10 day cram course. Was not an easy ride but I truly learned a lot -- especially from Dewi.
she's kinda obsessed with speech in a weird way, but her class is easy (lots of extra credit) and she's really funny
I like this teacher. She is enthusiastic and really loves speech. If you are looking for the easiest speech teacher don't take her class. She is pretty hard core.
She is a great eacher who loves what she does!
Not the easiest of teachers but is good at what she does. Self-absorbed and VERY morbid, very.
Bad teacher. If you want to learn how to give a stiff canned speech take this class. Thinks she is Gods gift to speech, in reality hearing her voice makes me cringe.
Took the 2 week cram course. Learned a lot. Go for Bonus speech it will help with points.
I think Dewi is a great teacher! Before taking speech, I was terrified, but when I was done, I left with so much confidence. If you want to learn how to give a good, proffesional speech, take her class. If you're looking for something easy then don't. Awesome teacher who loves what she does!!
She's overly passionate about speech and it's kind of creepy in a way and definitely annoying. DO NOT take her class if you are taking it just for the requirement. She's good at what she does, but unless you're insanely obsessed with public speaking, I highly suggest a different teacher.
She doesn't give a rat's ass about her students; she cares about speech in that she likes to give them and be the center of attention. She is essentially a child. If you want to listen to a snobby wench prattle about nothing, take this class. If you want to learn about public speaking don't bother.

Kill me now. Dewi is awful. She's an unprofessional immature person but gets an A+ for effort in presenting the image of being the best at what she does. She's so self absorbed that she probably reads all these ratings every day and cries but keeps reading just because they're about her.
This professor definitely teaches because she enjoys what she is doing. This is a class that people are usually very afraid to take, and she makes your time in her class a memorable and educational semester.
Extremely passionate about speech. She makes the class very enjoyable and fun, yet still very insightful. Very helpful. Very fun. Definitely recomend taking this class with her.
I can't believe some of the comments others have posted for Ms. Hokett. I just finished spring semester in her class, and I really enjoyed it. She doesn't require too much out of her students, and she is fair. Just do the few speeches and she offers TONS of extra credit.
She is great, she knows how to bring out the best in people and make you perform better. Very awesome class an alot of fun!
Ms. Hokett challenged us on serious issues that related to life and not fiction. She made us open our eyes on how we see as well as hear how a speech is performed professionally. This is a subject in life that will help eveyone to be a little more careful with the words they use. I truly enjoyed the challenge.
If you put forth a reasonable amount effort than you can do well in the class. She makes her tests very straight forward, gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, and is very helpful. Speeches are slightly more difficult but if you do one extra credit assignment then you should do fine. I highly recommend her class.
Definitely a great teacher. Love to listen to her give speeches. She could read a dictionary and make everyone be on the edge of their seats. Definitely learned tons in the class too, and eneded up loving speech. And have to agree with the statement below, she not bad to look at. Take this class, you will pull away a wealth of information.
I started out taking the class just because it was a requirement, but I ended up really enjoying the class. Dewi makes the class worth coming to. She tells a lot of really funny stories. I'd say take a shot at her class, it will be worth your time.
Dewi is an absolute jewel. Her involvement in her classes and students makes this dreaded class an enjoyable experience. She loves what she does, and she devotes an extrordinary amount of time to helping students outside class. I am sorry for anyone who has never met this extrordinary lady. Anyone who takes her class will adore her and learn a ton!
wow she actually has me interested in giving speeches and i am actually WANTING to come to class. She moves fast when she teaches but also makes herself availiable if anyone needs help. Not only does she teach well but she hold the students' attention.

She was an awesome teacher. Got me through my butterflies and everything. I would completely recommend this teacher to anyone looking to actually have fun in thier speech class!
She was a really good teacher. While she did seem alittle obsessed with herself, she made up for it in her willingness to help us pass her class. i took her during the summer and we only had 6 students, but this made it so much easier for her to focus on bettering our strengths and fixing our weaknesses.
Her witty antics kept the class rolling smoothly every time, and her compassion for the students was evident. Each of the students in our class made a visible improvement thanks to her help and advice.
Dewi is a great teacher she pushed us to do our best work and she helped us along when we needed it.
good humor, fun, interesting. perfect instructor to learn from.
awesome teacher, great class
Dewi is an amazing teacher. I wasn't looking forward to this class and didn't really know what to expect but I was plesently surprised with her class. She keeps you interested and makes you want to be a better student. She makes you earn your grade but afterwards you really feel like you've accomplished something. Take her class you won't regret it
Truely one of those great teachers in my opinion. Not only does she know her subject, but she truely loves it and is passionate about it, and that totally comes off in her lectures. Her class isn't the easiest in the world, but if you follow her speech format, you will do well. Her tests are fairly hard, but study the guide and you will do fine.
Very nice person easy B or A as long as you give effort
She will scare you the first couple days, but she is the best teacher ever! lots of easy extra credit!
One wonderful professor who have passion with this subject. I wasn't really onto this subject but having her as the professor makes me more interested. She's an awesome woman, very considerate, her wonderful smile makes you not want to miss her class. Its not easy to get an A but if you work hard enough she will definitely give it to you.
Professor Hokett is amazing! I honestly was dreading the class and hated speaking in public but she has made me more confident. She offers SO much extra credit, and help, and the work is very do-able. She has so much of a personality you will love going to her class. It is also never boring!!!
I took this class in 4weeks! She has a good sense of humor and brought energy and passion to the classroom. She is very experienced in the speech field, has good stories and examples. She gives extra credit opportunites and prepares you really well for the speeches. If you follow instructions, do the extra credit, a good grade is easy!
Dewi is an actress. I found it not just entertaining but inspiring. Speech in general is a boring lecture but she narrowed down what is good. Gives all the questions to midterm and final our ahead of time! There is some serious preparation for the speeches but this is college! On scale of 400pts gives 80 extra credit pts. Take her!
Dewi is a fantastic teacher. She is very helpful. Very energetic. She makes you feel at ease speaking in front of 35 strangers and brings life to the class room. She honestly cares and respects her students. She gives plenty extra credit and you'll have fun doing it! By far, the best professor I've come across.
If you're looking for an easy speech class, this is not it.(take Hill instead), but Dewi is very entertaining, she is an actress, a bit over the top for me. I doubted her sincerity more than once. She does offer lots of extra credit, but that's only because she grades the speechs so hard. be prepared to be judged. 1 midterm 1 final & 4 speeches
Dewi is one my coaches on the speech team. She is amazing to work with!
She is super energetic. You can tell she likes what she is teaching and wants her students to do things the right way. She definitely knows how to teach and help students, but she does expect alot out of student's speeches and technique.
Made interpersonal communication into a performance class--which it isn't. My friend, who majored in communication, told me this class isn't supposed to have any speeches. Unlike she assumed of the whole class, I did not take this to get out of speeches; rather, my future profession requires INTERPERSONAL communicating. Couldnt stand her ego/jokes.
i took speech in high school, so i found this class very easy. she knows her stuff and she makes it clear what she wants from you. if you follow it, its easy. her only weakness is that she does not allow for a lot of creativity in the speeches. its not horrible, but i wasn't a fan of the strict speech structures you have to follow.
She's very passionate with her teaching. Very helpful and gives great feedback. Stay on top with your speeches and practice them too. Tests are easy.
She is such a hard teacher. Today was my first day of class and I just dropped it, because it was just too hard for me to understand and she talks so fast.
Professor Hokett is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. I have a huge fear of public speaking, but she has given me the tools to deal with it. I am happy to say that what she is supposed to be teaching us is exactly what she does. It is nice to have a Professor that cares about her work.
I love this teacher. Yes she is somewhat hard, but you learn so much. As long as you study and put an honest effort into your speeches, youll be fine. As for the talking fast...listen...and being "obsessed" with speech, maybe she just loves what she does?!
i LOVED this class! i hated speaking in front of groups, but now it doesn't seem like such a big deal. yeah it's hard, but if you do the work, you'll totally do well in the class :)
dewi is great. if youre looking for the easy speech class though this is definatley not it, but if youre lookin' to truley get something out of your speech class, take her! i was so scared my first day but im so happy i finished the class. i went from terrrified to accomplished. shes super funny and makes class fun!
freaking awesome teacher. This classwas so easy. A lot of extra credit but you don't need it if you put an honest effort into your speechs. 4 speeches and 2 exams which were a joke. Dewi really is the best!
Speech 100 is suppose to be an easy class...Not for this lady, she gives you extra work for no reason and she develops grudges against students, like in my case I abruptly left class because of an emergency. When I came back she chewed me up in front of class. I had an 87% before my final and at the end a C?? And I know I did good on my final.
I love her. She is amazing. She is the best public speaker ever and everything she says is powerful! great stories and she wants everyone to succeed! She gives up to 90 points extra credit! The speeches were easy and she made me feel confident when giving them. If you really want to learn how to speak, learn from the best!
funny at first but can be mean. after like the first three weeks there were no instruction days only performance days. i asked for help and she refused to meet with me for more than five minutes. doesnt change grades for any reason lots of extra credit bc if you're not one of her favorites you will need it. She was also very rude to me =[
Dewi is witty and entertaining. She is passionate about her teaching, I loved taking the class but be prepared to perform in front of the class, its not a big deal we all had to do it. You may learn some new things about yourself. She also gives many opportunities for extra credit.
Dewi is an awesome teacher! She is an accomplished women and is an amazing speaker. Take this class seriously, if not u will be doomed. She is a great teacher and knows her stuff, so dont try and B.S. this class it wont work. She has amazing stories and the reading is minimal, but necessary for the mid-term and final..
I've seen it said that Professor Hokett has "favorites". Well, in all honesty, she does. HOWEVER! Her favorites are the students that put in effort! She doesn't grade you terribly if you aren't a professional speaker, but she recognizes commitment and effort and then rewards that. Take the extra credit, do the work, pay attention and show up!
I really enjoyed her class. Does she have favorites...yes and I was one of them. Only because I worked hard and put forth effort. And afterward she might even approach you to be a part of the debate team! :) Exams: kinda hard. Study for them: YES! I'm a straight female, but she's cute and very much a Lady.
such a fun teacher, the class was really great overall. gets a little stressful if you put off the pieces till the last min but its all doable and fun. she grades pretty fair and is honest with you, just take what she says and work on it and you will be fine.
Steps to pass the class. Show up to class. Follow the speech out-lines. Keep your speech in the time frame! Do the extra credit (easy points). Sign up for the extra unit class to get out of the impromptu speech, (hardest speech). Midterm- yes, final-yes (unless you do extra credit) Great class!
tries to make her students into her speech and debate team. asks for way to much out of students who are taking speech for the first time.wouldn't take her again
GR8 teacher b/c she CLEARLY tells you what you need to do to succeed, including telling you what's on the midterm/final, gives you an outline for your speech (all you do is fill in the blanks) and provides lots of extra credit. It's only hard b/c it's hard to stand up and speak. I don't believe she has favorites, but she does say it like it is.
Wonderful teacher! I loved her. She really takes the time to get to know her students and is extremely helpful. You definitely have to do the work, but she pushes her students to be the best they can be. Her class is always interesting.
Super nice! Follow the outlines and dont go over your time limit! Knows what she wants so dont do what you think is right. Very helpful will explain a million times and doesnt mind as long as it helps you understand. Do the extra units you wont regret it at all! Do extra credit youll need it! Love her and the class
Follow her outlines EXACT. Don't go over times. She's really nice and knowledgable but pretty annoying. She always says "This is true" after everything she says and it bugs me. If you do all your work you can get an A easy and do the extra credit!
Very INTERESTING teacher. Since she is runs the debate/speech team, she really knows what she's talking about. She speaks at about 340923 words per minute, but you're tuned into every word cause the passion in her voice. Although she has high expectations, I very much enjoyed this speech class.
Great professor. Very passionate about the topic. You will love listening to her speak; she's very eloquent and always engages you. You must, however, be thoroughly prepared for your speeches (she'll give you plenty of time to prepare them), or she will rip you to shreds. Also, she's hot so looking at her was a plus!
Very easy class, just do your four speeches and you pass. Lots of extra credit chances so if you do bad on one speech it isnt really a big deal. Teacher is very passionate about her subject but sometimes very vain about herself and her debate team. You dont need the book which is nice, the only time the book is needed is to study but you can guess.
Want a no strings, no bs professor? Here you go. You will always know where you stand, what's expected of you and how to accomplish it. She is very passionate about teaching you how to better yourself. This is a must take class for self improvement. This really should be a 4 unit class!! I had a great time and learned a lot.
Great teacher. Dewi loves what she does and she is very captivating when talking about speech and her life. Was not looking forward to this class before i took it but Im very glad i took it with her. Speeches were difficult but her outlines made it so simple to do.
I HATED speaking in front of people prior to taking this class, but thanks to Dewi, she helped me overcome that fear in one semester. This class will help you in many other endeavors in your life, guaranteed. Everyone is terrified in the beginning. but as you progress through & see everyone's speeches.. it gets more comfortable. Highly recommended.
She is a GREAT teacher. I was really shy and hated talking in front of people but this class really made me come out of my shell. She is very passionate about what she teaches and makes each class fun and interesting. Definitely recommend taking this class!
Speech 125 is a class she offers in the spring only and it is an awesome class to take! My major did not require this class but I didn't know that then, it is extremly fun! Great for people looking to be in Theater Arts, she is very helpful and gives a ton of extra credit! Totally recommend this class!
Professor Hokett is so awesome!:) super sweet & gets you out of your shell if your a shy person. She really helps you in giving a good quality speech and allows you to have flashcards at all times, but still expects you to make eye contact with your peers! She's awesome though, ended with a B.
Took her over the summer knowledgeable 4 speech's to do wasn't to bad. Show up pay attention she's very funny and a good proffesor for the subject matter.
Took Speech 100 with her this summer and i loved it! She is a bit tough but at the same time she's helpful, passionate, and very funny. She talks fast thou. She provides many chance of getting extra credit. Didn't use a text during class but you'll need it for midterm and final to study. Don't forget to make an eye contact. Very nice woman.
She is funny, nice, and helpful, but her class is more difficult than the other speech classes. She told us that herself. Her class required a lot of work, but if you do the extra credit, you will get an A. Just make sure you are prepared to devote a lot of time to this class.
Took this course over the summer. I have anxiety speaking in front of others, but was able to pass the class with an A. She has plenty of experience and is a great person. I am glad I took this course with her and choose her again if I had to do it over again.
Hokett is a great teacher, you will learn alot. Class attendance is mandatory if you miss more than 3 classes your grade drops. If you keep up with the class you will get an A. Lots of extra credit. The impromptu speech(final speech) hardest thing i've ever done! if you want an easy class go somewhere else, but in this class you will learn ALOT!
She is one awesome professor. She has wonderful personal stories, she's passionate, organized, kind, and reasonably easy. Honestly, just follow her speech outlines. Don't go passed certain time limits on speeches, take good notes, and attend class.
She is a wonderful speech teacher. I love her personal stories that relate to writing a speech. she gives extra credit, and you will learn a lot. great teacher!
Really, really, really great professor! She is a little hard and expects a lot from you, but she is so passionate about what she does and will inspire and encourage you to a good grade. If you are a COMM major, take her! You will not regret it and will learn so much. Final and midterm are off of 2 lecture classes so take notes on those classes! YES
I love this teacher! She's amazing. Do what she says, exactly as she says, and you have an A. She gives MANY opportunities for extra credit, take as many as you can. You really only use the textbook for the midterm and the final. I recommend sharing the textbook with a classmate, because I personally hardly used it. Take her if you have the chance!
Cookie cutter outlines make good grades very easy. Follow instructions and you should be fine. Her grading confused me, her notes didn't match the grade. Ex- Great intro! = 4/5. She has a lot of stories, but is pretty interesting. She gets annoyed with students, but a lot of them couldn't follow basic instructions. I didn't need the book at all.
She is very passionate about speech & debate. She doesn't help with your performances but does offer honest criticism. Helps and mentors the best, and ignores the rest of her students. She is not a good teacher, just a speech and debate coach pretending to be teacher.
"The hardest speech 100 class on campus." She's the debate coach for Palomar and is very into public speaking. Attendance is needed.Hard to get an A on a speech, unless you're one of the select few she see's potential in. Some students are straight shot down in front of the class and that kinda hurts them. Hard to get an A, but not hard to pass.
She is tough but lays out exactly her expectations on the 1st day of class. So you have a choice. There is extra credit but not easy. This seems like a typical speech class. You need the book to pass the exams - otherwise we don't use the book. And you don't know what from the book is going to be on exams. EXAMS ARE MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE SPEECH.
Awesome teacher, currently taking Her summer course. So good! I had sheldon hill last semester he was terrible. Sign up for this class. Do what she asks and you will get an A.
WONDERFUL teacher. You will learn so much. Has great stories and keeps you entertained. Just work hard, which is not too much to ask for considering it is a college class.
One of the best professors at Palomar. She always keeps lectures interesting and puts everything into teaching. Take her if you get the chance.
Dewi is by far one of the best professors I have ever had! She makes lectures and classes interesting and will help you with whatever you need! This class is a lot of hard work but Dewi recognizes that and she teaches you things you will use later in life. She makes public speaking fun and I really enjoyed this course.
its not an easy speech class like we all expect speech classes to be. she drills you like he drills her debate team. yes an A is easy. she gives lots of extra credit. she is fun and tells lots of stories. its a fun, hard, class but also easy to make an A
She really encourages you to open up when you''re speaking as long as you follow each speech''s guidelines. Book is used for midterm final only Oodles of extra credit mostly in the form of watching speech tournaments. She''s really understanding. If you nail the first speech I mean perfect you''re golden the rest of the semester.
Its not an easy class, and she grades speeches very tough.
I was petrified to take speech class, but Dewi changed that. She is without a doubt the most inspirational professor I have ever had. She tore me apart on my first speech, and told me what to improve on. I got A's on every speech after. She may seem like a drill sergeant at first, but she makes you an amazing speaker. She made me believe in myself.
Play by Dewi's rules, and you pass the class. Abuse the system, and she'll bite back. Don't be absent on performance days or she gets grumpy with you. Overall, just do the work and get your A. It's that easy.
She has an awesome personality. She gives you good feedback and is great at telling personal stories. "Now let me kill you" make sure you meet her dead lines and also she tells you exactly what she wants from you... so don't disappoint her.
I love this teacher!!! Her speeches in class were amazingly inspirational! She was amazing gave a bunch of extra credit to help you pass but admits that shes a hard grader and her tests are difficult. I took this during summer and it was a lot of work but it was the most amazing class. wish i had taken it for a full semester. She believes in all.
She is the best teacher i have ever had. Just do everything she assigns including the extra credit and you will pass. You need the text book in order to pass the exams. Come to class everyday and turn in your assignments on time and you will have no problem.
Her speech 100 class is very structured. You'll get an outline of each speech and if you follow the outline you will do fine. She is brutally honest with everyone, if you say something ridiculous she'll call you out. Very nice lady though, some of her lectures are so fantastic, they will have you leaving her classroom ready to take on the world.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. She is so funny and engaged. Gives you an outline for every speech and will give you very good feedback on the speeches that you give. It is impossible to fail her class with all of the extra credit she gives. I was beyond terrified of public speaking, but she has made it tolerable and inspires you to get better at speaking.
I loved this class! Hokett was an amazing teacher! She made class so fun and inspirational. All the speeches you do are really interesting and things that you like and want to discuss. Her tests are easy but do require you to briefly read over notes and be prepared. There are tons of extra credit opportunities. This was a great class to take.
Professor Hokett says in the beginning of class that there is no way everyone in this class should not get an A Grade. If you apply yourself and do the extra credit you will not have to take the final (because you will already have an A in the class). Both of her promises which were absolutely as presented. Just try and show up is the key!
Took Speech 120 and 145 Prof. Hokett cares about your success. Attend class regularly and-on time, participate, do the assignments and you'll get a B, if you don't want to study for her tests, which are hard. If you don't want to study hard for tests, then take Speech 145 as well and that will save you the studying plus you'll learn a lot more!
One of my favorite teachers! I love how she incorporated personal stories into the lectures and I love how her classes were never bland! She is an amazing professor, I recommend her! The only thing is there is a lot of tedious work, but it's nothing unbearable. She's a tough grader, but she gives great feedback! I would definitely take her again.
Horrible teacher. She is not clear on what she expects and wants from students. She will give a different answer every time you ask for clarification, which in the end just leads to more confusion. You cannot have an A in the class without taking the final - unless you enroll in a 1 unit class she teaches. Very hard, HUGE group project. Avoid her.
Her lectures are mostly personal stories that don't help you with the tests. You must read the textbook to get a B on her exams. She offers extra credit, do it if you want an A. Enormous group project where your group teaches a chapter of the book to the class - literally invested over 60 hours in it just to get a B grade on it. Bad teacher :(
Professor Hokett is honestly the best teacher I've had at Palomar. She's hilarious, and makes it almost impossible to fail her class with all the extra credit she gives. If you want to be a good public speaker, I would highly recommend her. Truly a powerful speaker and a wonderful teacher.
I have social anxiety so this class was extra hard for me. Remember to breath. If I had known she was the hardest teacher I would not have taken the class. There are 4 speeches, the longest being 8-10 minutes the shortest is a 4 minute impromptu speech. I hardly used the textbook, you only need it to study for the midterm and final. Good luck.
Professor Hokett is one of the most passionate professors I have had the pleasure of taking. She's an excellent educator, and her critiques of speeches, while blunt, are legitimately helpful. Though I personally enjoyed it, the fact that you have to do formal research for two of your speeches may be a red flag for some.
If you didn't get an A or a B in the class, it's because you didn't try. She gives you all of the resources you need in order to be successful and more than enough time to do assignments. I took this class in a 6 week summer semester and still had plenty of time to get things done. She is a passionate and inspiring person and I loved her class.
Did not like this professor. Long, boring lectures about personal life events that are not pertinent to the class or the tests. Extremely long group project, group of 5 teaches a chapter from the book to the class for at least one hour. It was a difficult class, way too much work for just 3 units. I would recommend finding a different professor.
Professor Hokett is very inspiration and caring towards her students. I wish all professors were as passionate about their subject as Hokett. She is a tough grader, but also offers lots of extra credit, so you should have no problem getting an A. Very clear of student's expectations. 4 speeches a midterm and final.
Dewi Hokett is a true gem. I have extreme public speaking anxiety, and took this class to over come or lessen it impact on me. Through hard work on my part, and the instruction/ support from Hokett. I feel that is exactly what I have achieved though this class. If you work hard for Hokett, she will go over the moon to make sure you pass.
Tho she's a tough grader, it's not that hard to get a good grade because she always gives you a extra credit opportunity. You won't regret to take her class.
Lots of papers, lots of extra credit opportunities. Take her class if you are the type of person who can deal with papers and group project.
I took this course as a requirement, and I am so grateful that I did. I would have to say in my entire college career I have never been so excited to get to a class. Dewi Hockett is inspirational, hilarious, and a real gem. Take the notes, do the extra credit, take the optional one unit class. You will love her!
Good speaker, excellent teacher that cares about her teaching. It's her dream job and you always want a teacher like that. More than that she clearly communicates the concepts in easy to understand ways. Back end of the class is work heavy so do it as you get it, DO ALL THE XTRA CREDIT (there's lots), dont be intimidated by papers (they're easy).
Professor Hokett is funny and keeps it real with her students. She has high expectations of her students but has a genuine intention of seeing her students grow. I am glad I had her for my SPCH 100. It was not easy but well worth the challenge. I learned a lot about myself and passed her class with an A.
Professor Hokett is a great speech teacher. She is really passionate about it and does her best to make sure everyone passes. If you did not get an A or B it's because you didn't follow her guidelines or just clearly didn't try. She is funny and very personable with students which makes you more comfortable with this class. I recommend!
She demands a lot so you probably won't get a good grade. There is a lot of extra credit available though. The worst thing about her class is honestly that she overshares so much. Instead of learning about speech all I have learned about is every traumatic event that has happened to her and honestly it is so awkward. Don't sit at the front.
Dewi Hokett was my favorite professor! She offers an extra credit unit that you can choose to take, and it guarantees you will get an A in class. Nice! Yes, it is work, but very worth it in the end. I had an amazing experience with this class, and learning about how to present yourself professionally. Dewi expects you to actually care about class.
Worst professor I've ever had the displeasure of taking. Lectures are irrelevant to tests and reading material, mostly personal stories that I didn't care to hear. ENORMOUS group project - the group teaches a chapter to the class during a class period (1-1.5 hrs). People who are 'inspired' by personal stories will love her, everyone else hates her
Professor Hokett is an interesting character. Her lectures are great and the class material is mostly simple, but her syllabus is very broad and it can be difficult to grasp what she precisely wants. Due to this, it's necessary to ask her a ton of clarification questions. If you get a great grade on the 1 hour group presentation, you'll pass.
She gives you everything you need to get an A in this class. On top of that she gives plenty of extra credit. She cares about her students a lot, and wants all of her students to get an A. In the class she tries really hard to help you become a better student. Shes one of my favorite professors at palomar now. I loved her 4 week class.
Took her 4 week speech100 class and was very nervous for it as I don't like public speaking. She made me feel more comfortable though and teaches you to be a better public speaker. Offers extra credit so you won't fall behind. Just make sure to make eye contact with the crowd when you give speeches and you'll do fine. She gives great feedback
I was going through a lot when I took her class and my attendance was rough, but professor Hokett made it so easy for me to come to her and talk about it and work things out so I could be successful in her class. She is so appreciated.
Professor Hokett is a caring understanding teacher who wants each student to be successful. She is passionate about speech and public speaking, so if you're looking for an easy A? I'd advise yo to look elsewhere. Although, if you prefer to learn something and become a better speaker, or speech writer, then check her out, she'll help get you there.
For Dewi, the devil is in the details. If you format your paper to her requirements to a "T" you have at least a B on any given speech/project/paper. That said, there is a lot of attention to detail required. She also rains down so much extra credit that if you try-- and still receive less then an "A" that is purely on you, my friends.
Dewi was great! Not sure why people complain about her personal lectures..? If youre a communications major you will probably enjoy how personal she gets. If you show up, participate, put in work for the group project and follow her directions for the research paper, youre golden. Take her, she loves her job!
I wanted to like this class and this prof, but it was way too much work. You begin the semester with easy 2-3 page essays a week. But you also have a research paper (5-8 pages) and a massive group project (hour long presentation). Which also involves a 4 page reflection paper. For a 3 unit 120 class, its a massive overkill.
SPCH120- the lectures are boring. The book is interesting. Group project is DIFFICULT- she grades as a whole and individual-students grade participation. She Reply's fast via email. Do EXTRA credit you will need it!
Pro. Hokett has a wonderful delivery and explains Human Communication in a real way. She is strict on how she wants papers, projects, and assignments completed so READ VERY CAREFULLY to her instructions. She offers the MOST extra credit I have ever seen, which is very helpful in achieving an A. Double check your work and if you are not clear, ask
Prof. Hokett is incredibly passionate and skilled in her field and expects a lot out of you. She wants to see every student pass and offers plenty of EC to make that happen but the work you have to do in this class is no joke. I had to work harder than any other class to get an A. This class is tough but you will absolutely leave a better speaker.
This professor is enthusiastic about speech. Shes a tough grader but also provides amazing feedback. I feel a lot more confident in my speaking abilities after taking her course! I would recommend her, if you willing to put in the work and really improve your speaking abilities. Shes not easy what so ever so expect to work hard. Best speech teacher
Take this teacher! Everybody is terrified to take this course, but she wants you to pass and will help you along the way. She offers TONS of extra credit. Do all the work/ speeches assigned, the EC, show up to class and you will receive an A. This class is hard, but you will feel very accomplished the last day!!! I would take her again.
Professor Hokett is amazing! I definitely recommend taking her class. She makes you feel comfortable and helps you get over the fear of standing up in front of a class. If you show to her that your trying, she realizes it!
Professor Hokett was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I took the 4 week class and was super organized. You give four speeches and she gives you a complete outline with everything you need. I was super scared of speaking in public but she made me more comfortable with it. Loved her class!
Like a lot of other here have said, this class is loaded. I agree & thats not why I rate her this low. Im taking this class now amidst coronavirus. She acts like our lives have not been affected by it. She mocks students who have questions on the chat. She doesnt answer questions. Tests were available for a 2hr window. Missed work to take it
She seemed very inspiring and cool at the beginning of the semester but her expectations for a speech 100 class were a bit much and she is very unorganized when it comes to her online class setup. Her directions were not clear and her rubrics contradicted other rubrics she had. Unclear instructions and confusing expectations.
This was an introductory speech course and it was harder than my calc class. She is very unorganized and her expectations are unclear and contradicts herself and her requirements way too much. First b I've gotten in college and that is because she never responded to my email and made her expectations for the assignment unclear.
Class is well structured and Professor Hokett is extremely knowledgable but she will give confusing instructions or contradicting instructions and then expect the student to be able to figure out what she meant. With this, in addition to the harsh grading, this class was difficult. Extra credit somewhat makes up for this though.
I took the summer class which was 4 weeks long. She requires you to submit drafts for the speeches. Make sure you spell check, she deducts points for grammar etc. Grades your paper like an English paper. No late work allowed but she offers extra credit for turning in assignments a day early before 6pm. Make sure you have a good camera to record.
I give a 3 because she seems like a nice genuine person, at the beginning it seems like this course was going to be fun. I was actually excited but then I received my first score & found she marks down for any little thing. You could give an A+ speech and shell give you a C- on it because your outline didnt meet her standards.
I loved Professor Hokett! She always gave such good feedback and really cares about the things you write about in reflection papers. There are a lot of those but if you are a fast writer they are really simple. There is a group presentation at the end of the semester but besides that everything in on your own. Highly recommend taking her class!
Dewi is a great coach. Online tournaments aren't the most fun, but she goes out of her way to show her students she's rooting for them.
Professor Hokett is so sweet and gives great feedback, but make sure you follow everything exactly to her instructions if you want to do well. Even if you don't do great on the speeches, she offers an insane amount of extra credit (I had 200% at one point). Her grading is a bit strict, but she makes up for it with good feedback and extra credit!
Find another teacher. She doesnt understand that students have other classes. During coronavirus pandemic we are expected to consistently meet with 'group mates' outside of class. Insane amount of busy work and she will mark you off for absolutely nothing. Also, I got an A so this is saying alot.
This is the first time I've ever written a response about a professor. Dewi Hokett's Speech 100 is a TERRIBLE course. She expects students to memorize 10 minute speeches in an introductory course. She commented on one of my speeches that I had poured hours into and said it was "dry," and then failed me, and the rest of the class on the same speech.
I had a fear of public speaking for years. One semester with Prof. Hokett and my confidence and self-esteem increased greatly. I'm still a bit nervous but I now have the foundational tools to go forward. No more fear of the unknown. Thank you, Professor Hokett! You're a gem!
Frankly, I don't understand some of the bad reviews given about this professor. She was kind and considerate. Her expectations and grading criteria were clear. The lectures were short and to the point. She also gives out a lot of extra credit. My friends recommended her to me and I'd recommend her to anyone.
Like many have said, Prof. Hokett is an extremely tough grader, and sometimes contradicts herself. I received negative feedback on the formatting of one of my outlines, so when I followed her instructions, she marked me down again for doing the opposite thing. There is no winning. Do not expect an A in this class.
I loved Professor Hokket! She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, lectures are short, and is a relatively fair grader. Definitely recommend this class!
She does NOT understand that students also take other classes and has high expectations from everyone. Does not appreciate hard word. Rarely responds to emails and if she does, her reply has nothing to do with what you were asking. Class itself isn't hard, but she's a headache. I got an A somehow, and I"d never recommend this class to anyone.
She's direct with her reviews + expectations. She is a tough grader but offers extra credit. She was fair and respectful until she got very passive aggressive in her e-mails and Announcements. This class is a lot and I can relate to many of the negative comments on here. (Advise: Don't spell her name wrong and take advantage of the extra credit!)
She very open and sturdy. She allows you to have an open mind and be creative with your speeches. I would personally take her class again due to the new knowledge I acquired from the other students and her kindness. She gives a ton of extra credit it is difficult to say that it could be possible to fail this class with her as your professor.
Textbook is "required", but I didn't buy it and did fine. Watch lectures and you'll do fine on the quizzes. Expect to fail the final, that is impossible even with textbook. Speeches are demanding with lots of preparation required. She is nice though and the feedback is useful. She provides extra credit, do it, you're going to need it.
Best Professor I've had. She does not take BS, and you should keep up with your speeches and be well prepared. Her lectures were so awesome, and she was just fun to listen to. I was terrified of public speaking before this class, but now I feel as though I've actually gained an important skill...not something you can say for most other GE classes.
Amazing professor that truly cares about students passing her class.
Prof Hokett is awesome. She keeps the class engaged. There are a lot of lectures but she makes them easy to understand. If you do the work with the outline she gives, the class is a breeze. The work itself is easy but time consuming. I had never given a speech before, but with this class, I was able to do a full speech on a complex topic.
Highly recommend this professor for speech. She cared very much for each of her students, and wanted nothing more than for her students to succeed and conquer fears of public speaking. All speeches followed scripts which were gone over in great detail, plus many chances for extra credit.
Out of all college classes I've been, this one was my favorite because the professor was extremely funny! I was the one who presented a Squid Game informative speech & she watches that Netflix series as well. She also likes my favorite movie, Crazy Rich Asians. Besides interests, I highly suggest you try getting an A or B or you'll regret it.
TAKE THE 1 UNIT! It gets you out of the group project - I got an A in the 1 unit & this class. Don't get lazy & don't overthink this class. She is a hard grader and will take points away w no explanation. Great and caring person and I would take her again! SOOOOO much extra credit that is easy - she really wants students to succeed!
This class changed public speaking for me. I went on the first day of class terrified of public speaking and came out of the class as one of the top speakers. She gives outlines for each speech which is helpful and gives feedback after the speeches. Also, her lectures are inspiring and apply to the real world which made it exciting to go to class.
Hard grader only because she gives you all the tools necessary and then some to be successful; explains assignments to the T and lists specifically what your assignments need. A bunch a extra credit assignments and/or opportunities offered. Grades fast and responds to emails in a timely manner. As a professor, very encouraging and helpful.
dont take her unless you want to spend a majority of your time preparing your speech just to get a subpar grade
I have a mixed review for this teacher because the class is passable and at times she can be sweet. But then she will randomly say something rude and mark u down for the smallest thing.
Take this class! She clearly cares about the class, which comes through in her lectures and feedback. She wants you to do well. You must show up to class, but she is flexible. Her lectures are engaging and she genuinely cares about her students. Expect to put in effort but her feedback is amazing. She offers extra credit! She wants you to get an A.
Professor Hokett really helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. Her lectures were engaging, and the speech outlines she provided made the assignments manageable. Unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the textbook readings.
TAKE THE ONE UNIT, avoid overwhelming group project. You need the textbook, I only did well on the test bc of it. Participate in class and show effort. She seems cool at first, she ended up being uptight and not approachable. Tests are annoying, all answers overlap and its tricky. passionate instructor but not the easiest class
If you are taking prof. Hokett for a GE credit pick another professor, best if you are interested in speech. strict grading policy. Very critical of speech format, posture, tone, eye contact, cadence, and other small factors when grading speech. Not a bad professor, just don't recommend if you are taking for a GE only, time commitment is larger.
This professor's mood affects grading, making it subjective. Often rude and unprofessional, she imposes her political views on students. As a speech and debate team leader, she's ineffective, leading a poor-performing team. Getting a good grade required excessive effort, with little learned. Consider another professor.
would not recommend this professor. she puts on a fake persona during class but her attitude outside of class is embarrassing and degrading. She claims to care about all her students, but in reality, she only prioritizes those who share her interests, mainly the theater kids. Also you have to pay $70 for a textbook which is insane for a GE
Almost 20 years ago… She was alright but kind of a mixed bag. Talked a lot about her background and political views. Some of it was interesting. She is more liberal and I'm conservative. I did well in her class though and she is good when focused. She wanted me for Speech & Debate but I worked a lot of hours when not at school.
She's doing too much for an intro class. Important details for outlines are not included in the document and criteria. Unclear instructions especially about the formats, she just provides a document to copy and corrects you with the same one you copied from.
Whatever you do, do not take this course. She is a ridiculously tough grader and really condescending in her feedback. The material itself isn't that hard but when it comes to the speeches and outlines especially its nearly impossible to get a good grade as you will be marked down for the smallest of things that no other professor would care about.
PLEASE, pick a different professor! WORST GRADER docks pts for everything + weird comments/feedback. DO EXTRA CREDIT.4 speeches 300pts, 20 pts for early submission, Requires audience of 3 ppl. 5 quizzes + final multiple choice 150pts. 4 Discussions 100pts. Textbook: Lucas, Stephen E 2023 The Art of Public Speaking. Don't buy the book. Good luck :)
omg awful. if you want to be a communications major then this is the class for you. otherwise, if this is just a GE for you, pick someone else. please.
Very sweet professor! Her grading & rules are a must-read; if not, you'll have the chance to miss a point. Other than being a bit strict, her feedback is really helpful! I really saw great progress in both my verbal and physical public speaking. Few lectures and quizzes. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Textbook is free online as well
Dewi Hokett was a delight to have; her lectures were always very thoughtful, and she is a poised and eloquent speaker. The course is difficult if you are adverse to speaking in front of others, but Professor Hokett encourages and gives every student the same opportunity to learn and improve their skills. She is a professor with a lot of wisdom.
Do not listen to the two ratings below this one. There's honestly a good chance it's her burner. An awful experience being in this class. Be warned. I'm doing my best to make sure no one else has the displeasure of going through this class.
She was by far one of my favorite professor. I have extremely bad social anxiety, but this class not only helped me struggle through it but it also gave me the opportunity to improve my writing through topics I genuinely have interest and passion in. She was extremely kind, compassionate and super funny. I highly recommend.
