Good Teacher. Granted he can be very demanding, but he made an otherwise difficult subject interesting. He has a lot of rules and has little patience for excuses. I had this Professor some years back, but its never too late to evaluate. This Professor loves his profession and his course work reflects it. Yes, as some others had mentioned he is about hardwork and knowledge. I was never a book reader but after taking his course that changed and believe it or not I am now teaching at a college!

Truly a rare gem at BMCC. His curriculum not only challenges our writing skills but also challenges so much more, the intangible. He obviously put a lot of thought in to the books that were chosen for the class. He keeps standards high for his students which is a rarity at BMCC. Indeed the closest feeling to an Ivy League English class.

There is no reason to fail his class. He gives you the opportunity to succeed but what you do is up to you. I loved his class and he was funny, smart and interesting. I was sad to have it end. One of the best professors I ever had.

Prof. Jeffreis is a serious, hardworking professor who really cares about his students. He wants us to learn the elements of literature and master it. Dont listen to students that gave Prof. Jeffries a bad evaluation. This prof. knows what he is doing, he knows how to teach. Be forewarned that he is a tough grader and his reading is very demanding. the students that did poor in the class are the ones that dont like reading 30+ pages and doing at least 3, 3-5 page paper. The finest teacher CUNY has to offer. All the negative ratings are coming from people who failed or dropped his class, and their inability to convey their hatred in a properly structured sentence proves that. Notice how all the positive ratings are intelligible? Who are you going to believe, the lazy and the stupid or the intellectuals?

Prof. Jeffries is an asset to Cuny. He gives you that tough love that is meant to encourage you to push toward improving your skills. Many who don't like his class are poor students who don't like to work or appreciate constructive criticism. If you are ready for the challenge take the class! He was animated, entertaining and a great Prof.

A top notch English professor and a true asset to CUNY. Smart and seasoned professional, can be a little insolent at times, but that's a good thing. This class is not for weak students and Prof. Jeffries let it be known at the very beggining. All the comments given prior were all correct, he is a hard professor but nonetheless a great one. He is not like the other professors who get paid and don't put in work. You WILL read in his class a LOTTTT. and lots of papers. (he's bias when it comes down to your papers he will only give you good grade if he agrees with you)

This professor is strict and gives a lot of quizzes and homework. You must to attend his classes. There is no way to get around it. However, I would take his class again. I liked all his reading assignments(except poetry). His classes are interesting as well as prof himself. He will give you a good grade if you put enough effort in his class.

Professor Jeffries is one of the best professors I've had. It is, of course, necessary to do the reading (there are frequent quizzes) and to turn in the assigned papers on time, but I found him to be a very fair teacher. He challenged how I thought about literature and my life is better because of it.

BMCC students are generally lazy, dense, and irresponsible, so a lot of the negative comments about this prof. can be ignored. He is a wonderful teacher, one that can effectively entice students to work hard and become engaged in the reading. I say this after having completed a degree at Oberlin and having taken 7 classes so far at BMCC.

I was disappointed with this class because it's "World Literature" but he focused mainly on western texts.Some eastern texts would have been new and interesting but mainly you explore that on your own with the oral presentation You have to be able to bring new fresh ideas into your essays and astound him. It is not easy to get an "A" in this class.

Brilliant man. He teaches his class the way a college course should be taught. There's none of that "13th grade" nonsense that BMCC is known for. If you want to be challenged as a student, Jeffries is the professor for you. As long as you do what he asks, you can do well in his class. To prove it can be done, I got an A- in his class.

He is the best professor in English department. Even though his class is tough and frequent quizzes, I've never got bored in his class. Read his syllabus carefully, and talk loudly in the class. Then,you'll be able to finish with an A. His class requires a lot of work,but you'll learn a lot.

If you do not know how to write a simple essay. Do not take this class. He is amazing and critical. Very inspiring. He respects literature. It's art and helps you see the beauty in reading the past. If you can not create a simple sentence. He WILL call you out and suggest you withdrawal from his class.

Jeffries threatened to kick me out after 2 days of classes. He made us read and read and read and I hated him but in the end I respected him. He saw my potential and held me to a standard he knew I could keep. Honestly I'll never forget the guy. He gave me a reality check I needed. People he is not a cake walk. Only hard workers need apply.

There were only 7 of us left at the end of this class. People dropped, failed, were asked not to come back, etc. It bummed me out. He is strict. Do the readings. He gives quizes on most reading assignments so be prepared to analyze what you have read. Do not be tardy or absent. Turn in your work. You can revise all papers for a new grade.

Prof. Jeffries' requirements are simple; come to class & read the books. He may seem like a super strict a hole but that's because he doesn't allow BS in his classroom. There are 6 short books(including 2 plays), all requiring 3 page papers each and you can rewrite them over and over until you get an A. "Live life without excuses."(Jeffries)

Prof Jeffries is a teacher I had in 1981. What seemed to be strictness translated into making no excuses for anyone who did not rise to their own capabilities. He expected us to try, struggle, fail...then get it and grow. He challenged us to work toward understanding a broader world, not just the text. He is brilliant and I will never forget him.

Just completed my requirements and I'm finally out of school. I've had time to think back on my college experience and I gotta say Jeffries had a lasting impact. He's TOUGH. He wants you to work HARD.No excuses. No lateness. However once you prove you are serious he eases up a bit. Jeffries prepared me for 4 year college. I'm ready for anything.

Dr. D. D. Jeffries is a very wise,demanding, tough, yet fair, professor. He is a PhD, Marine, Soldier, NYC Taxi Driver and published authur, among other things. He is very generous in his critiques,helpful if you seek it, and will allow you to rewrite your papers. I rewrote B and C+ papers to an A, and ultimately got an A for the class. Exceptional

Mr. Jeffries is undoubtedly one the best professor of English in Cuny. His class is very informative, and he is committed to his job. His class is like running a 400m race; he maintains the same pace throughout the entire semester. This is one of the first real class you`ll every take at BMCC.

He is really a nice professor, he will let you rewrite your papers. You can easily pass this class if you attend it regularly and do the readings because you will have quiz almost everyday based on those readings. I passed this class with an A and Professor Jeffries was really helpful

I took this class for a summer session.His class is not easy but you will be fine if you read books that you are supposed to read. He also like to see students' writing skills improve. Show him that you are hard worker then you will get good grade.

Class can be intimidating but not impossible. Had him for European Lit. and had no interest in the subject but ended up enjoying the class. Only about 6 people were left by the end of the semester so beware only the strong survive this guys class. Expect a challenging class.

Jefferies is great. All you need to do pass this course is live within reality, read the assignments, and be prepared for small reading based quizzes. Some people don't like his blunt attitude, but he is straight forward and doesn't sugar coat the truth or realities of the lessons of his class which I might mention are invaluable. Dexter Jeffries is one of the most acerbic professors I ever met. His lectures are bonafide hilarious and quite rewarding. If one is planning to take this journey and expand their knowledge and horizons be prepared for the challenge. Not for the faint-hearted. Lectures are interesting & informative. I recommend taking him if you're an English major, otherwise stand clear. Some like his "upfront" attitude, but personally, I find him unprofessional & inappropriate. And yes, you MUST read, participate & work hard. Overall interesting course, but don't recommend taking him as elective or if you're timidshy.

Dr. Jeffries is hands down a professor that you'll have to prove that you're deserving of a passing grade before you get it. He will prepare you for the rigorous curriculums of graduate school, guaranteed. His class is not a walk in the park, it is an experience; you'll enjoy it if you want to learn. Head up, no phones in class, not even charging.

I recently completed my class with this professor, and I must say, it was a blast having him as a professor. Yes, it was hectic with all of the reading assignments within the short amount of time given to us, but that is what English class is. He tells jokes and tries to stay in touch with modern day references, which adds to his humor. TAKE HIM!

He is the best professor I have ever had. The man is brilliant. You will emerge from this class with a better take on the world. His intention is to get you to really think, and take yourself seriously as a student. Effort is required, as it should be. He is what many students actually need. He truly wants you to succeed in class and in your life.

Jeffries takes you on one trip of a class. Regular quizzes. You should know how to construct a thesis-based essay, revisions allowed. Readings are available online, but texts vary, and he teaches mostly from the textbook. He will say otherwise. If anything, come the first day. He makes his rules very clear, especially with his extensive syllabus.

This is one of the rudest professor's I have ever met in my life. He is insulting and disrespectful as well as a very unrealistic and I would never recommend. All his guidelines go against BMCC's DO NOT TAKE ! All you're allowed to do is literally breathe, or he'll kick you out. Seriously.

Professor Jeffries is a tough professor but only for lazy students. If you attend class and read the readings he assigns, you will pass his class. Don't expect to slack off and he not mention it to you. I recommend any student who is willing to put in the work for a good grade to take this course with him. He will help you succeed.

He is a great Professor, he is pretty strict about the things that needs to be done. However I didn't mind since he makes the class interesting and will be there for you when you need him.

What I can advise is, enroll his class with caution. He's not the WORST teacher, though he like other english majors have their own depiction of what good writing is, which makes his expectations irritating. Do not sleep on this professor, if you like challenges, take him, but this class can be a real burden, you'll be a bit conflicted sometimes.

This is a great way to learn from an amazing professor. I don't usually write common for Professors, but Professor Jeffries is a tough instructor in a good way. His tough training will encourage you to improve your English reading, writing and speaking skills. He is responsible for the job and clear with the obligation.

Professor Jeffries is a tough grader, but an excellent teacher. As long as you read, complete all assignments,revise your work, and pass the quizzes or tests given you should be fine.

A very challenging professor in a good way. To say that he changed me as a student is an understatement. Lecture, test and essay heavy. If you listen and allow him to, he will really polish you as a writer - if that is a field you're interested in. Very intimidating at first but he knows what he is talking about. Very experienced and trustworthy.

If you're not serious or prepared to have a reading assigned after every class then don't take this class. There will be quizzes for each reading you were assigned before class, and a paper on each book you read in class. Don't be late, don't be absent more than twice and you'll do fine.

I say this man is excellent! The reading a are basically for ones own inspiration and growth. Pop quizzes but it only propel consistency with reading. His class isn't for the lazy and the one who doesn't want to use criticize thinking.

If you HATE reading then listen to the bad reviews. But in reality college life is reading so it makes no sense to try and avoid it it will come back to bite you. The things he has you read are actually so interesting you dont dread the reading. And the quizzes are not tricky just straightforward. Hes funny and respects effort in students.

Make sure to know what you are reading. Know the context get the professor's input whether you are on track. He replies to emails fast. He grades fair, and you can redo the essays, he loves his job. He is well respected. He gets the class ready to read with him and act the part of the character in the book. I bet he can grade this review and iamok.

You have to know what you're reading in order to understand the lectures for each class. Since this was an in-person class we had a pop quiz every week. Personally, the professor was accessible through e-mail within a couple of hours. You definitely have to work for your grade but overall Professor Jeffries is good.

Great professor. His class creates an environment that makes you feel accomplished. There were 4 or 5 essays due this semester, which is a lot, & we had MANY tests. There was one month where we had a test every class. All the tests were on readings we were assigned the class prior. Jeffries makes you work for your grade, but the class is worth it.

l love his sense of humor, he is rude because he expects people to use common sense. some students feel entitled and well when he gives you an answer they don't like it. He gives a lot of homework that is reading. He allows you to rewrite your essays for a better grade but no late work. He is hard but gives ample time to do the assignments.

Prof. Jefferies is a hard worker and is very passionate about his work. He really pushes his students to do their best and wants them to care as much as he does. He does give a lot of work and can be a tough grader but he will give you the chance to rewrite if necessary. His lectures are beautiful and he has a good sense of humor. He is blunt too.

Lectures aren't very engaging, but the readings are all fantastic. He does quizzes to make sure people have done the readings (they aren't hard if you read). Out of touch, bit of a boomer. Only professor I've had at BMCC where we actually read the sort of things you should be reading in a college English class (Milton, Shakespeare, Blake, etc.).

His way of teaching is very interesting, and makes the whole thing very enjoyable. Although there's plenty of literature to read at home, but he's very professional when it comes to his teaching methods and he wants you to succeed in life so that you can transfer to a good 4 year college. Never miss his classes, and always complete the homeworks!

You will have a reading, followed by a quiz in almost every class. The quizzes are not hard, as long as you read the material. He expects effort from his students because he wants us to succeed and be prepared to transfer. He ensures everyone in class participates and is engaged in class. Overall, Great Professor!

If you're not even average at writing, you are cooked. Besides that, he's kind of rude so if you get mad easily, you're cooked as well. Also a good amount of reading.

I normally take ratings with a grain of salt but Dr. Jefferies is a tough professor who turned out to push me to my limits hence making me a better reader and writer. He values effort and as long as you show it you will get an A. If you complain, chances are you probably won't get the grade you desire.
