her class set up was pretty bad, none of the test or quiz dates were marked on the sylabus and she collected homework randomly. She also didn't do a good job of reviewing for the tests. The labs were also hard and long. Overall she wasn't horrible but she wasn't that great either. I ended up with a B in the class.
Somewhat unclear in class at times but just ask questions and she'll clear it up for ya. Labs were slightly difficult but again just ask questions. Overall I liked this class.
I would say she is a bad teacher, but I hesitate even calling her a teacher.
"What not" - Diane Colt. Be prepared to hear that 10 times daily.
Tests and quizzes were unbelievably hard compared to the homework, which some days was 5 problems, others 45 problems. On one test 75% of my section got a D or F. I understand the concepts, but she makes the problems so difficult that you get killed by the algebra.
HORRIBLE. one word sums it up
Horrible teacher. She talks at the board, and writes more definitions and words than math. She will often rewrite the same word problems in several different ways, but it just is a waste of time and chalk.
not a good teacher. almost all examples are straight from the book. doesn't take time to explain her work.
She goes way too fast!!!! She writes at the speed of light, erases the chalkboard poorly, doesn't explain stuff all the way through and always shows up late.
Horrible didnt learn one thing might even have to take calc I over again
She is a horrible teacher. She erased the blackboard poorly. She missed/cancelled 8+ days of class. She goes really fast through the in-class examples, writes way too much, and talks to the board. On top of it all, the tests are extremely difficult. Oh, and she does not communicate well with the TA's that teach the discussion parts of the class.

Wow i cant believe she is really a teacher considering she teaches noone becuase she never looks at the class. She looks at the blackboard and writes until class is done, well that is if she shows up for class. Hard test and quizzes and she didnt even tell us what was on the final until two days before. Get out while you can. AWFUL HORRIBLE TEACHER
took for both calc2 and diffEQ. should not have taken her the 2nd time. she cant teach. she is helpful if you go to her ofice hours...that is if you can go to her office hours because shes never available.
unless you are really good at teaching college material to yourself do not take this class with colt.
TERR.I.BLE. The hw and notes were easy enough to understand, but tests were horrible. Super casual about coming to class or even having class, she probably cancelled 8 or more times on us. She likes to say "what not", and once I averaged her saying that over 3 different days and on average, she says it 30-40 in one hour. Don't take her!!!!
Just a horrible teacher. Doesnt teach well at all. I could of not gone to any of the lectures, just gone to the discussions and would of done fine. The material in the class is easy but she finds a way to make the tests are unfair and hard. DO. NOT. TAKE.
Not a good professor, learned by myself throughout this class. I've only been to lecture on exam dates and the first few weeks of the semester, after that never went. Why, boring lecture and is not clear. Passed with a B, exams were kind of difficult but the final was cake. That's if you study.
Terrible, terrible professor! Obviously does not care about teaching what so ever. Cancels class on a regular basis. Every thing I learned in that class was thanks to Laura Zimmerman's online notes. Avoid teacher at ALL costs!
Not even a teacher. She automatically expects you to know everything she says/writes. Goes too fast and poorly explains the problems.
She doesn't assign homework which is really nice when you have other classes that are time consuming. She is really nice and will help you after class whenever. She is really relaxed and I think people get the wrong impression of her. This class is the easiest class I am taking.
She isn't the best professor ever but you definitely learn from her. If you aren't good at math, its gonna be a challenge. Doesn't require homework to be turned in but to do it. She can go too fast at times. She has good personality though. Can be awkward but I think that added to a good part of her personality.
She doesn't explain anything well. Just a terrible teacher overall. Avoid at all costs.
Good professor if you have a background in the subject and pick up on the information easily. Teaches at a good pace giving more time for harder sections and less time for easier sections.
If you are good at math this class will be very easy. Lectures are boring and she doesnt explain anything. Put very little effort into this class and still came out with a B
She really doesn't teach, but rather explains exactly what is on the powerpoint presentations. She tells the class a lot of useless information, like how if we read ten different stats books and they are inconsistent that we should call the authors for clarity.
She really doesn't teach at all, basically puts the textbook on the board and does it at light speed. I had the hardest time learning in her class and her tests are way too hard compared to the homework. She picks the hardest of all problems to put on her tests. I had to rely on the T.A. for learning everything.
Diana is an excellent professor. She made calculus really easy to understand because she explained the steps in depth and gave a lot of real-world applications. Her quizzes were easier than her tests, but all the questions on the test came from either our homework, our quizzes, or lecture notes, so nothing was a surprise. I highly recommend her.
She answered any questions I had and explained the concepts very well. Wish I could get her again next semester.
I think Diana is an excellent professor. All of the tests and quizzes had problems that came directly from either the book or in class examples. She does go over material fast but she does explain everything in a way that would be understandable for anyone. I would recommend her to anyone taking Calc 1!
Absolutely worst teacher I've ever had. She doesn't care how you do, she doesn't seem to really care about much at all. Test are unbelievably hard compared to the notes she does in class. Goes way to fast, talks to the board, and expects you to know the material before she even teaches it.
One of the worst math teachers I've had. Basically writes the book on the board, and writes crazy fast. The lectures are not helpful at all, and the order she teaches makes the subject much harder than it needs to be. She makes the class difficult. Take with Laura Zimmerman if at all possible.
Her exams were nothing like the suggested homework or lecture notes. She writes on the blackboard which is fine, but she goes to fast and skips steps and is bad at clearly explaining topics. Going to her office hours doesn't help. She talks in proofs without. She forgets we are taking the class to learn it and don't already know whats going on.
Terrible professor. Writes too fast on the board, talks fast literally 50 mins straight of that. Does not help what so ever, teaches as if all students are already math genius'. Makes a somewhat difficult subject nearly impossible to pass. Talked to at least 5 people in the class, all think the same and are also not passing. AVOID this prof.
Worst teacher I have ever had by far. Guaranteed a fail. Do. NOT. Have. Her. Do whatever you can to not be in her class.
brutal lack of effort put into every lesson. reads straight from the book which would be fine if i did not know how to read
Impossible to keep up with. Acts like she doesn't have time to actually teach, impossible to learn anything from lectures as she basically writes the text book on the board with no explanation. Tests are extremely difficult, gives hardly any partial credit
AWFUL! Only graded on exams that are nothing like the suggested problems, or what she "teaches". No partial credit. Cant understand the TAs. Shes goes fast and expects us to know what shes talking about. Absolute nightmare.
By far the worst "teacher" I've ever had. Her exams are always ten times harder than anything we learn. She assumes we have prior knowledge to what she teaches. Inconsistent grading. Doesn't care about her students. DO NOT TAKE HER.
By far the worst "teacher" I've ever had. Doesn't care about her students. Exams are harder than any material we ever cover. Inconsistent grading. Only grades on exams and quizzes. Expects you to know material prior to class… TA's don't help. She's lazy.
By far the WORST teacher I have ever had. I ended up dropping the class because I was studying 5+ hours a day, and still only getting D's on the quizzes. TA's were arrogant and unclear. I couldn't even follow along on the whiteboard because the TA's handwriting was so terrible. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Absolutely an impossible teacher unless you are very good at teaching yourself. Assumes everyone is a math genius going in. The school teachers version of Chip Kelly's no huddle offense. Honestly think she times out when she is going to take a breath. She knows the material, but teaches as if she is teaching a bunch of fellow teachers not students.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Highly recommend not to take this class.
Teaches hard material. I am not a math person in the least, but I still got an A in the class. Tests were tough because the material is tough. Very helpful in office hours. TAs don't speak English so go to office hours. Overall a pretty good teacher.
Awful teacher. She goes so fast, you have no time to process what she is teaching. You must teach yourself in order to get a decent grade. Her exams are MUCH harder than the suggested problems and she finds the worst problems to put on it. My class has been doing so bad on tests, she has had to curve every single one. I think that says something.
She went far too fast, and erased what she had just written instead of other previous material. Not the worst class I've endured, and since I took AB Calculus in high school I knew a good amount prior. She has a bit of an accent that made it mildly difficult to make out her explanations.
Diana was an excellent teacher. Once in a while she would expect a bit too much of us, but never unrealistic expectations. The class isnt easy, and she makes sure we know what we need to know in order to move forward with more math. The tests are fair, and most questions are homework problems. Excellent professor. Recommend 100 %
the classic In class 2+2 homework 2x2 and the test was just on a different planet
She is great, had her for Calc 2 and Math 3280. She lets you use homework on quizzes. She drops lowest scores from your grade and if your final is higher than one of your exams she replaces the score. Great teacher!
While math is easy for some, it is not so much for me. Professor Colt covered the basics, but you really need the textbook to get you through the class with a passing mark.
The quizzes are straight from the homework and you get to use your homework notebook. I enjoyed all the labs we did on mathmatica. She doesn't take points off for algebra errors!!!
Not helpful in office hours, goes too quickly in class with zero depth. Been to office hours with her a couple times with little to no actual help.
Tests are not hard if you do the outside work to prepare, most questions on quizzes and tests are taken directly from past homework problems.
Do the work and you'll get an A. Literally all of her test and quiz questions are right off the "recommended" homework problems. There's a lot of them but they're well worth doing. I got over 100% in this class so do the work and you'll do well.
Does not teach. Wants you to learn the theory not the math. Great for math majors, any one else such as engineers , absolutly worthless. Do not take. No one likes her teaching.
As with any math course, you need to show up to have more explanation of the topic. She will explain things to you when you ask her, even if it is during class because others are likely to have the same question. The homework gives you a better understanding of the section.
Some people didn't agree with her teaching style, but it worked for me. If you do and understand your "homework" it's an easy-A.
For quizzes you can use a specific homework notebook that you make. The quizzes are questions from the homework. If you don't understand something she's good at answering questions. I really liked her as a professor, a couple of my friends didn't like her. It's all personal preference.
Diana is a great prof. Clear lectures, great homework quizzes that are open notebook.
The worst teacher/professor that I have had during my 14 years in school. She basically assumes that everyone is a nerd, when you switch from topic to topic, and so if you aren't a nerd and don't have an understanding of the material before you start a new topic then you're kind of screwed. That is unless you read and comprehend the terrible book.
My opinion... I do good on classes where I'm taught examples in lectures in which the homework is based off of, which I use to study for the tests. BUT in this class, tests are based mostly off of theoretical/broad knowledge of the subject, which is NOT covered in most homework problems. Practice tests vaguely represent actual tests.
At the beginning of the semester I didn't think I would pass because the second chapter you do is the hardest but as time went on even though it was annoying that she did notes so quickly and gave few examples her worksheets really helped and the class got relatively easier. Quizzes come from the optional homework so do the homework
She goes very fast and writes down lots of definitions and theroms. On exams, she expects every step to be written down and explained thoroughly or else you will lose major points. Exams were curved about 10-15% each. Be ready to put in a substantial amount of work for a good grade.
Stats with her was easy, if you do all the homework, show up to class, and write a good formula sheet (you are allowed one side of a piece of notebook paper for each exam) you can get an A. She sometimes takes attendance for participation credit otherwise grades come from homework quizzes and 3 exams.
Colt is a very nice, but not a good professor, however. Lectures are theorem heavy with few examples, in-class activities had potential, but were too long. No Moodle, but does email reminders. Notes and activity keys are not posted. Has open-note HW quizzes. Tests are okay. You pretty much have to teach yourself or have taken class elsewhere.
Class is set up well with in-class activities and quizzes that are from homework. Exams are straightforward with a fair amount of extra credit. If you show up to class and make a good cheat sheet that she allows you'll be fine. However, she is not a very good at lecturing. Would i look for another prof? likely so i didn't have to teach myself.
Such a boring class, I skipped way more than I should have and it showed in my exam scores. So if you want to do well going to class is probably necessary. The material was not difficult once I actually paid attention. Her speech patterns were a bit grating and prompted me to tune her out most of the time.
I liked her overall. I felt like the exams were different from the quizzes and the homework but I still did decent on them. It is important to show up to class every day since she will go through problems on the board or give out points. A lot of the times questions weren't straightforward, kind of confusing. Didn't like that, but class was ok
Her lectures are extremely scattered and she tends to ramble about things that we don't need to know. This is a math class yet her exams were mostly true false and she often threw in questions that are nothing like the ones we practiced. She does curve the exams quite a bit but this class was a lot harder than it should have been.
Go to class, you need the activity points because there's only three exams total. Also, she didn't update grades until 3 days before the final and my grade dropped 20%, so don't be too confident in what your grade is at any given time. She seems nice, but she's also pretty intimidating.
She curved all exams, but her gradebook is not updated frequently. The homeworks are the quizzes. Lots of true false on the exams, so understanding the actual analytical process is necessary. Overall not a hard class. She posts all lecture notes online after class, but she takes attendance. Also drops some quizzes and in-class activities.
Diana is nice and knows what she's talking about. Her grading style is a little weird and off-putting to many. The biggest problem I had is that she writes so insanely fast that you can either choose to copy the notes or listen to what she's explaining, but not both. All in all, she's pretty much an adequate professor.
She is very smart and is a huge help outside of class, but lectures are tough. Either show up to office hours or try to read the book a little before lecture. She never really explains why we do anything, just how do it, so it's hard to understand the big picture. Her tests are graded very hard, don't expect any pity points.
The class was very difficult but well structured. Do the homework, study for the quizzes, study for the tests and you will be fine. However, still a hard prof.
The content that was taught through videos, 1-3 page documents, and homework were NOT a good representation of the actual content that was on the exams. Never set a real exam schedule, so exams were whenever. Grading weights changed multiple times. Online exam: cant skip problem and cant go back. Free response ?'s at end worth half the exam.
Never had a course schedule. Half of the sem was online (COVID). The online "lectures" were just videos from the textbook & word doc notes. Homework/reviews did not reflect the exam difficulty/content. Online exams too long for the time limit. Overall, the class was way harder than it needed to be; I would have taken it with a different prof.
I get that half of the semester was online from COVID which is hard, but lectures were a couple pages of notes that were mostly just formulas and videos from the textbook publisher. Had unannounced "in class" activities due at the original meeting time in an online class. Frequently had errors on exams and wasn't very nice when asked about them.
Not sure how her class is in person but online it's awful. This is a math class where she does NOT lecture. She gives a text document of "notes" (no visuals) each week to read. There's no quizzes either. Only midterm and final. The plus? Midterm + Final only make 25% of grade and homework is easy-A so you can get a B by just scraping by on exams.
She had us watch youtube videos with mandatory notes that were graded on how detailed she thought they were. Grade book is months behind with 9 days left in the semester. During the midterm exam you could only see 1 question at a time and couldn't go back after submitting your answer for that question. Final looks to be the same format. Avoid.
She didnt really teach us whatsoever, just videos from the textbook. I dont even know what she looks like. Also, midterm was dumb like how the other ppl described it. Grading criteria on assignments would just be getting points taken off for what she didnt ask for. Like how am I supposed to know how many summary statistics you want?!??
had to watch lectures that are 15 years old on youtube and take notes to turn in for them. You couldnt go back a question on the tests and each question made you scan a piece of paper to upload which took forever. Homework assignment due the night before the final AND a homework due day after final. Had to post in discussion instead of emailing her
Lazy. Uninspired. Got her degree out of a cereal box. Need I say more?
This is coming from a math-based student. I have never struggled in a math course until taking Diff Eq's from this professor. With an early on miscommunication on canvas, she eventually stopped responding to my emails once she noticed she was at fault and never changed my grade. She has yet to enhance my learning on the subject course. Avoid if can
Actually understanding the material in this class is near impossible. I have never disliked a math class, but professor Colt's explanations of the material don't make any sense since she types up all of her lecture notes and expects you to do the rest yourself. This class is frustrating. Don't take class from her for your own sake and well being.
Professor Colt does not like to communicate with her students. She often likes to blame them for her own lack of knowledge of online learning. I'm sure in person many students would reap more benefits, but do NOT take her online course. She stops responding to emails when she's in the wrong and it is very frustrating to deal with.
Do not take Colt. Anybody but Colt. Teach yourself. Ask a 5 year old. Do not take Colt. What a waste of time. Too many assignments at completely random times. She never actually teaches. She should literally be fired. I swear she likes seeing her students suffer. Seriously. What a joke this class was with her. Save your time and your money.
Doesnt teach Lots of homework Hardly helps Doesnt answer for days or at all Doesnt give out final info Wants to get out of actually doing work herself Posts irregularly Due dates are inconvenient This has literally been the worst experience at UMD When she says to me i dont know how to help you its legit time to find a new job Needs to be fired!!!
Quizzes you on stuff you finished over a month ago Doesnt grade things until 3 months after Doesnt give feedback on grades Expects you to understand things that you have never been taught Avoids answering questions Gives you homework at the worst times of the week being an asynchronous course She legit doesnt care about her students Dont take!!!!!!
This is by far one of the dumbest classes I have ever taken or will take in my entire life. This class with professor colt is atrocious. The only thing that makes any sense is how to do homework. The online asynchronous course (which I am writing about) there are no lectures with heavy homework and confusing tests. She dumpster dove for her degree.
Quizzes are bogus. The final is stupid and covers stuff we have never talked about. I am putting 12 pages of work into this. This is a waste of time. I cannot stress how miserable this class has been. Goodness sakes, who let her teach? She should be tried for cruelty.
let me get this straight..... the final is on a thing that she just MENTIONED.. a couple days before we had to take the final. oh. my. gosh. what a waste of space is she here. She is a useless professor who does not know what she is doing. I am livid.
Dr. Colt does whatever she wants and has no respect for the students' time. Whenever class was cancelled, she would send out emails at the very last minute, or post them where students could can not find them. She doesn't give any feedback and is not willing to help students. She knows the subject, just not how to teach it.
She is a terrible teacher! Whatever you do, avoid taking any classes with her at all costs. She has no structure to her class with no clear learning objectives to follow. We found out about exams a week before because she does not post them anywhere. She doesnt post her lectures online either. Calculus 1 was easier then this class with her.
This class was fairly easy, but Colt was extremely unorganized and it made the class stressful. You have no idea what to expect showing up to a class. She did not have exam dates in her syllabus, and would tell students maybe a week prior. Go to her office hours if you need extra help on homework! She is helpful there.
Professor Colt was not my favorite in any way. I took stats with her in the fall of 2020 and I did not enjoy the way the class was structured. Overall I did learn the material but she didn't contribute much to helping us learn as she mostly used other people's videos. Final exam was nothing like the material we learned in class and not my favorite.
There was absolutely no structure to the class. No syllabus posted with a schedule, pretty much have to teach yourself with khann academy. I highly recommend to not waste your time and money, if you need a stats course take it with a different professor or at a different university. I made a big mistake not listening to the reviews beforehand!
She is so unorganized and lectures are not planned at all and it is so hard to know what she is talking about a majority of the time. Take another professor. Please. I didn't listen to ratings
I thought Colt was a good teacher, just a little unorganized. Going to lecture rally helps but it's not necessary, she's always willing to ask questions and explains things in a simple manner. She can go somewhat fast at times but as long as you do the hw and go to lecture sometimes you'll be fine. Quizzes are bearable, final was a take home exam.
If the choice is Prof Colt or a different math professor, take the ladder.
She is extremely disorganized and the expectations of her class are not clearly expressed. She has poor communication and assignments take weeks to be graded. The material is not difficult, but this professor makes the class challenging due to the lack of structure and organization. Honestly made my head spin.
Lectures were not engaging. I recommend attending every class even though it is optional and many skip, because notes from lecture are allowed on quizzes (the only positive). Grading is unclear. Final was not spoken of until last week of classes, then two finals were assigned. Many questions were about a software program, not math covered in class.
The course hasn't ended yet but I'm very convinced that I'm not going to be able to achieve a greater grade than B. Diana just sets assignments to be due whenever. Don't ask for extensions, no point. All the syllabus says is that you're not getting mercy. This course is painful in every sense, but it's not difficult. Diana is difficult. Avoid her.
Took me two full weeks to make it through an entire lecture without falling asleep, even on 8 hours of sleep and this not happening in any other class. I submitted my final 5 minutes late, and when it was marked as a 0 I had a b+ but somehow I got a final grade of a C.
She very monotone but she knows what she is talking about and willing to help if you need to go to her office hours. must follow directions exactly but allows for corrections on what you did wrong. Do the online hw and assignments and you should end with a good grade
Don't go to her lectures, actual waste of time
Would not recommend her online stats. She won't update my grade or fix some of the links after I've emailed her 3 times.
The classwork was easy enough, but lecture was extremely boring. It was SO hard to stay engaged and care about the class since her delivery was so bland.
What a waste of time and money I actually cannot believe I paid for this class. It's an hour of her muttering to the board writing word for word, unexplained definitions of stuff we never go over again. The only way I ever learned anything was from reading the textbook myself and that only gets you so far. So unhelpful. So boring. Just so terrible.
If you take the online section of this course, prepare to put up with a lot of B.S. She is very unresponsive to her own system of asking questions via anonymous discussion boards AND email, so good luck if you ever need help. If you follow her rules to a T, you will likely be fine, but if you don't, prepare for a bad grade even if you're correct.
Least supportive instructor and you will NOT learn statistics with her. I sent multiple different communications and received NOTHING back. The assignment uploads were horrible with no opportunity to plan for the work ahead as it was uploaded on a weekly basis. To make matters worse, the final was uploaded LATE. Worst course experience ever
Horrendous professors, uploaded final late so I am having to work on it at 1am so I don't fail the final. Take another professor. Absolutely no support what so ever, doesn't teach anything. Literally all the coursework comes from the online textbook. She has done NOTHING this entire semester. especially teach
no support, no teaching, no tutoring, no office hours, no responsible grading, no communication, bad canvas page, no course schedule, final uploaded late + slur on the final
Class is really easy, but you need to follow all the directions or will fail. Lectures are full of bull, she kinda just writes on the board and gives worksheets. Really disorganized, grades SLOW, and not much communication. Was an easy A but if you struggle more with stats do not take this prof.
I may as well have taught myself this course. She had a discussion board for student questions, then in the final week of class sent out a message saying that she had forgotten to turn her notifications on. STILL after this she did not answer any of the questions on the board. Not sure if her in-person classes are different but do not recommend.
The professor was unresponsive and provided little support. Lectures were boring, but the textbook helped me get through the coursework. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Very lecture heavy and not engaging necessarily, but gets the information through. Horrible communicator, unorganized canvas, and a bare bones syllabus. Misunderstood an assignment because of her lack of communication in class, in emails, and on canvas. Also she uses the program JMP for computing and is annoying to learn.
Ignore the other reviews for Dr. Colt for this course. This course was not as difficult as other reviews paint it out to be. A few online assignments a week, some Mathematica lab, an open-note quiz, and a discussion post. She was very responsive to emails and questions and understanding for technical difficulties. Very nice professor overall.
lectures are painfully boring, just talks to the board and writes really fast. still ended up having to read the textbook after lectures because the hw includes many topics she doesnt cover. In the JMP assignments, MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, if you dont follow it you will not get credit. she did pass out worksheets, so that was nice.
Lectures are hard to follow due to an overload of information. This, combined with all the homework and quizzes being online, makes it feel like you aren't even taking the same course (note: this was for the statistics class; I'm unsure how her other sections are). Not a difficult class, but it's a drag to get through.
