a wonderful teacher to take.
Great teacher.
Communist, good teacher, explains well, if you listen and have the slightest clue about reading and writing, you'll pass easily.
an excellent teacher, has amazing discussions in class, very helpful for writing skills, very anti-Bush..
She is a really cool teacher, her class is more discussion that writing. She gives a lot of points for attendance (A major plus) She talks about politics most of the time and she is very anti-bush. I highly recommend her for english 1 and 2.
One of the coolest professors I've ever had. Her class is so fun, you look forward to being in class. The novels we read are really interesting and she engages in a lot of political & social conversations which are really cool. She's easy on grading.
Loved her class, and her personality. Fun and quite intelligent. I Looked forward to going to her class.
Classis enjoyable. I dont know about looking forward to going, but it isn't unbareable. She hates President Bush, and all men for that matter. She is very feminist, if you're a guy you wont enjoy the novels.Hard to get an A, but easy to get a B.I recommend
Good teacher, VERY opiniated when it comes to politics, kinda reminds me of the "weakest link" lady :P Attendance is a must, hates when students are late, do the assigned homework and you'll do fine.
this lady is very feminist, hates guys, and it's hard to get an A, but it's an easy B. you would be better off taking a different english teacher.
stay away....if you are a guy
She is one of the smartest women I ever met. Her class is not hard and she makes everything even easier. She is a feminist a conflictist and a great professor.
i hate femenists. i wish she'd keep her class objective and not try to spread her propaganda at my expense.
Great professor, well-organized. She makes the class interesting and lets you know exactly what she expects from you. There's a lot of reading and work to be done, but isn't that what we're here for? You'll learn a lot in her class.

he is cool, but if you've been in ESL classes dont ever take her 'cause u will regret. I wrote essays that could be A in other classes but I got C in her class. She is nice and respectful.
3 essays, 1 research paper, essay final...challenging class but EXCELLENT teacher. If you like English, take her for sure! Hard A, EASY B!
I hated english but now I love it thanks to her. She is one of the strongest women I ever met and I'm glad I took her class. It's an easy A. English is not my first language but I got an A. Definitely take her.
one of the best!!! diverse selection of reading & interesting view on media/social/political events, extreme feminist/anti bush. class discussions were monopolized by tchr's pets but her lectures/interpretation of the lit is amazing! expects excellence on papers but overall experience is worth it!!!
Engelmann is amazing! I loved everything about her class. She is an awesome professor, I learned so much in her class and everything we talked about always caught my attention. I'd always look forward to attending her class. Seriously, take this class, you'll come out of it with a great experience!
I loved this teacher! And whoever said that she is a feminist is a total jerk. I am a guy and I never felt that she had discriminated me in any way, she was very helpfull and kind. Sure her novels are a little bit harsh on men, but I guess it's reality...Take this teacher, she is very intelligent, s
If you think "feminist" is an insult, take another class, or go with an open mind and learn something. College is full of politically liberal prof's, get used to it. Easy A unless writing is really really not your thing.
I really liked her class. Her frankness may be shoking for some students but she is just realistic! It's a very challenging and interesting class. It make you analyse literature and poetry deeply and you learn a lot. It's one of the best teachers I ever had.
Currently enrolled in her class, I have yet to meet a professor so exceptional. She has opened her students eyes and enlightened us beyond belief. An amazing woman. Such appreciation for the english language and a woman of strong conviction. TAKE HER CLASS AND BE PREPARED TO THINK...
Very helpful and clear. She's very reasonable and if you listen in class, read some, then you'll do fine. Essays are important but not hard; You have to be able to have some type of original thought. I love her as a teacher! Not a professor to worry about.
She is a phenomenal professor. I am currently finishing her winter class and it is great. It is really fast paced in the winter and there is a lot of reading cramed into the 6 weeks, but it was well worth it. Easy A and using your analytical mind is a must. I recommend her to everyone.
TAKE THIS CLASS! it will definitely change your way of thinking and you'll find yourself making connections through different situations in your life, it helps you to build on your analyzing skills and you'll build a stronger background of critical thinking and writing Best Professor I've ever had.
notice how the ratings in this page are made by women. If you are a guy and enrolled in Engelmann's class you must hate the topics she talks about in class. A professor that shows her political views in class is not a good professor, although i admire her for listening to opposite views.
Smart, compassionate and knows english VERY well. I'm male and I didnt feel disciminated against. She is opinionated(who isnt), but doesnt mind hearing others' opinions. She picks books that are actually helpful to read. I disagree with her unequal/extremist(unfeminist?) views but enjoyed her class.
Best teacher at smc by far.
I took English 1 and now I am taking English 2 with this wonderful teacher. I have so much respect for her. She is a wonderful teacher, very interesting and clear. Anybody who wants to learn something should take her class.
I took english 2 over winter break and I felt engelmann to be an exceptional experience throughout my scholarly career. Her lectures are inspirational and passionate and she is one of the few teachers here at SMC that will contribute much much more than a headache to your academic career. TAKE HER!!
I love this teacher! Her class is amazing, she is smart, interesting and pretty (I know it has nothing to do with the class:)still:) Defenetly take her class!
if you are a foreign language student DON"T TAKE HER. SAVE YOURSELF. she doesn't care even if you tell her that you came America a couple of years ago, she treat you same as others. she also call the A students loud and ask them to help low grade students which I hated.

I found her class mind-opening... had never looked at literature or poetry in such a way, and frankly it was a transformational experience. Yes she has strong views. I appreciated new perspectives. Great teacher.
Great professor!!!!!Very interesting choice of literature so this class is anything but boring.Just make sure that you do the reading and participate in the class, and if she sees that you care she will to.Very open minded and smart, also overall easy grader. Be original and yourself and you will be fine.
I took her class over summer and she never showed up(literally). Every week, she only showed up for like 2 classes out of 4. If you want to take a class where you dont do anything, this is the one you should take.
When I signed up for the class I thought I would be able to ignore what I knew would be a liberal agenda. I spent 90% of the time sitting and silently fuming that my beliefs counted for nothing in a room where the teacher bashes anything and all republican/bush...it is very insulting. Good teacher when it comes to the actual teaching, not the preaching. Leave that outside the classroom.
She is a good teacher. She is difficult but she makes you a better writer. This is not an easy A class, so if that is what you are looking for pick another class. I worked hard and got a B, but i was very proud of that B!
I love her to pieces, she does have a thick accent but it just adds character. She is very liberal and her discussions are based on text that make u think. Most of the class is centered around politics, she appreciates participating and being active in the class. For essays be careful with syntax, mechanics, spelling etc., and have a clear thesis!
She's a very nice lady who is willing to help you, but she can't keep her liberal agenda out of english class - sometimes I feel like I'm in poly sci. Seems more like a moderator for discussion than a teacher sometimes. I didn't find her class very difficult.
She is awesome...i loved her class. Make sure to understand that everything involves politics. Do the reading and participate. A lot of writing...extremely informative and educational class...not like other English classes where you don't learn things.
Coming from UCLA, she expects nothing less from her SMC students. I spent all-nighters fretting over some pretty complicated theories about postmodernism, but I got so much out of her class, as well as an A. Good contemporary reading list. Highly recommended.
she is very nice and helpful. her class is good. she has very good reading materials. easy A if u do all your assigments. she likes democrat, not republican. if u r a repblican and likes Bush, keep your mouth shut. she always accuses men for being violent and bad, but not women. she should know about Yate's case. so, are men or women violent? both!
yeah, I agree with the previous rater. She's good, but be careful with your political view.
You would think that taking a "Contemporary American Lit" Class you'd at least touch on some Vonnegut, but that didn't happen. All in all, it wasn't a bad class. Her movie choices weren't all that great and she kept going on about "Paris, Texas." But the essays weren't that bad, and she treats you like you're in an upper-division class; very cool.
Prof. Engelmann is very open to new ideas, and is very flexible with the essays and presentation in the sense that she'll give you freedom to be creative with them. Participate in class and don't have more than two absences. Novels and stories are great, and the class is interesting and engaging. Highly recommended.
Great class! Four 3-page essays, and one 8-page research paper. She chose interesting reading materials that were very relevant to our times, honing in on our critical thinking/analysis skills as well as forcing us to take a better understanding of what's happening in the world. She gave a wide selection of essay topics to choose from, and is a f
Excellent professor. Very knowledgeble and thought provoking. Quite a bit on the liberal side though. A great choice if you're pursuing a degree/career in english or the like. But if you're a science major like myself, she's more work than the grade is worth.
The best teacher ever. I really recommend taking her for english. extremely nice and helpful. take this class.
she was a great teacher. she's passionate and uses several sources (not just the textbook) to get you motivated. one film, some audio, text books and novels. lovely women. when anyone talks she'll listen so attently with an encouraging smile on her face. just a few essays and a final. good novels, great class.
The nicest and most scholarly professor i have ever met, challenged me to write better and it worked. Very fair grader and always willing to listen to what you have to say. Take her, you wont regret it...interesting reads, movies, different sources to get you interested...Very knowledgeable
Dr. Engelmann is one of the best professors SMC has to offer. And for all you people who call her a "manhater": grow up. Just because she addresses violence against women doesn't make her a manhater. That's reality- stop being whiny and pathetic.
She is a wonderful and inspiring teacher. She uses various methods to interest each individual student. Her overall ideas and analyses are incredibly interesting. Even for a math major, this course is well worth it for the worldly knowledge that she brings to it. She has her own opinions and perspective, and she tells them openly. Incredible clas
I didn't enjoy her class. She doesn't help with your essays. She picks favorites in the class. She takes attendance and grades for participation. It's an easy B but a difficult A.
I believed all the other said in this page about so that I took her class in the past Winter. But just like the previous person said, she picks her favourites in class. We have to read the literature text book together with 2 NOVELS!!!! It's intense! If English is not your 1st language, DO NOT take her.
I took her about 1 1/2 yrs ago and I can honestly say that I'm still thinking about some of the things I've learned from that class. It was kind of a Sociology class. We covered controversial topics. Fair grader. You learn a lot. Interesting class. If you aced the essays you didn't have to take a final.
You can tell this professor is highly sophisticated/educated. You can't help but respect her and the way she teaches. She's passionate about teaching and wants her students to engage and analyze the material. She is a hard grader however and you really have to work for the A. If you are confident about your writing abilities than I recommend her.
Not really that bad, but not good either. Left class for about 20 mins every day and went god only knows, so there is that.
You need to REALLY analyze and make DEEP connections in your essays. Be sure to pay attention and write down her notes (invaluable on essays).Grades include class discussion. Overall she is a very engaging professor. You will learn to go deeper than what you read, and dig up symbolism and literary devices. Her essay criteria is hard. You will benefi
Her class was not so helpful. What she commented on the essays are not what she gave advice for drafts. She also didn't collect responses that we wrote and ppl just discussed in class. If you're not good at speaking, don't take her!
Ms. Engelmann is a good english teacher. Lets start with that. If you take her Scholars english course, you better already have a good idea of how to write a strong essay. Thats what the scholars classes are for: students who aren't novices. A lot of the complaints on here are probably from scholars students who really shouldn't be in scholars.
she does not really teach at all. you learn from the books and internet NOT much from her. she always said as if we owed her because she was so nice to you. take others and compare! if you don't trust me, go to her class and suffer from it. good luck!
A wonderful teacher with a nice personality. Extremely helpful. Encourages students to express themselves. Very concerned. Reads essays twice before grading. If you submit early, she will even call and help you before grading your paper.
Professor is a native of Italy and therefore speaks with a wonderful accent! Analytical skills are a must. Demands participation from her students. Class was insightful because she attempts to teach her students to pick up on symbolisms, allusions and metaphors in literature. You will never read a book the same way. Texts covered include Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Shakespeare’s Othello. Poetry also covered.
If you plan on taking this course, be comfortable with your public speaking skills! Take Speech before this course if you aren't. Moving on - She is the best professor I've taken. She is challenging with her lectures, and will change your thinking about literature, and the world in general. She brings out the best in her students through discus
Prof Engelmann was not that great. I dont know what these people keep bragging about her. And she is NOT hot, who keeps rating her a pepper? she is like 50 something. Class is boring and sometimes i find it to be useless ( and this is coming from a Straight A student). I've had better
I look forward to this class every week. To enjoy it you have to do the reading. I've learned how to get more out of books, I'm seeing allusions to old literature in books and movies and everywhere now thanks to her. High quality teaching, not perfect, but definitely worth the cost, and good enough probably for soem of the top schools.
Mrs. Engelmann is really nice, and if you know how to write essays you'll be fine. 3 essays, 1 research paper, 1 in-class essay final. I'd recommend her.
i loved this class. on top of the prof. engelmann's intriguing italian accent, she is a great teacher with a lot of knowledge. i love the ideas she passed onto the class with her choice of literature (writing about the world, woman at point zero, 1984, etc.). i am an english major and i thoroughly enjoyed her class
Kudos be to her! She made me realize how stupid I was to have believed all the ridiculous worship she had here. Anyhow, I extremely appreciate the hedonism I had in her class listening to her self-admiring lectures, her smart kids, her so-called justice, and her salvation. thx a lot. Save my life! I no long major in English but Neuroscience!
Internationals, plz dont take her class! She hates foreign students i guess. I dropped this class with getting a W and all the other internationals in the class dropped it too ! this class is more like a philosophy class and has a lot of class discussions :(
I got all As in Philosophy 1, in English 2, in Speech 1 and 5 but her class. International student, that's the SIN I guess. I felt intimated whenever I spoke in the class Ok, I have accent. She has too but ive been WORKing as a phone operator for 3 yrs speaking in English. i've got 720/800 in SAT CR 780/800 for SAT writing b4 taking her class!
If you take her, make sure you are ready for a commitment, she uses many books, and you must read about 2-3 books throughout. Not to bad if you dedicate your time. Make sure that you get essay's revised before turning in. She is very anal when correcting. Also, there is about 4 papers, 1 research, and 1 final.
if u like to be picked on and stared at when u dont do ur work then she a good teacher for you... she also used this boring asss book 1984...she does alot ofquestioning on that book. so if you are gonna take her read the book before you go to the class and look at every detail that there could be in that book...she also grades really hard on the es
I dont know what people are talking about...Engelmann loved everyone in our class. Her class is demanding but nothing you handle, but you actually have to work on your essays and keep up with the reading. She doesnt hate international students, but warns them of the difficulty of the class. She is the best prof I have had at SMC, learned so much.
The material is very interesting, very in-depth. She is a nice woman, clearly loves the subject. Her tests are a little tricky though but she is generally a fair grader.
The class i regret not dropping. BEWARE! if you are not a great public speaker, do not take her! Class felt like a philosophy course as socratic seminars on the reading were held daily-15% of ur grade is based on class participation. TOUGH GRADER- only rewards A's papers worthy of being published. I've never had to work so hard for a B in my life!
Best eastern European, English lit teacher ever!
She is a great excellent. All you who complain about her class feeling like a seminar need to realize that she does that to help her students get used to public speaking. A challenging class, but well worth it because you improve your reading/writing skills and although it is tough you learn how to write at a much higher level. She's the best!
she is a force of nature! she loves what she teaches and you better love it too. all the literature is interesting and from all over the place. four essays - short stories, novels, poetry, play. extremely interesting class but you really need to put a lot of work. do not take if you are not into literature and read before class!
Read interesting short stories/novels, but she missed a lot of classes due to "back pain". Only 2 essays, a presentation and final, pretty easy overall. She's very pretentious and yet we talked about the same very basic themes throughout the entire semester- got a bit boring. Speak up in class, she loves people who participate.
She good and fair. The 15% participation is pretty much a give away if you say like one or two things every class meeting. There is reading to be done, and you need to be able to write like a B and A grade essays if you want an A in class. Overall, she fair and no easy A unless you good at essays.
I was beyond overqualified for this class, so take the "easiness" rating with a grain of salt. That said, I didn't spend much time reading or doing the papers, and I still received an A. A bit of a socialist, but not hard if you understand basic (objective) concepts of paper-writing, and she tries to keep you engaged with interesting discussions.
all the comments said she was so good. I took her this past winter session and i really didnt like her so much. It was a short semester so we had to go fast but there was no reason for her to be mean. she does love what she teaches tho. if ur not a favorite you gotta work harder. 2 in class essays 1 poetry presentation and a quiz. Good luck.
Not the easiest "A" but it is definitely doable. You must talk in every single class to earn participation points which are very important to her. For the poetry presentation don't choose song lyrics, although she seems okay with them, choose a famous poet. Do the essays, come to her classes, take notes, and try your hardest
Very intelligent person. She is someone you can learn quite a bit from. She strays from hot button issues which can be frustrating if you like to be passionate. She's not to tough of a grader and you must grasp the main concepts of the reading. Great novels. Great Professor! Get on her good side and don't be rude. She won't tolerate it.
I quickly realized that students who had taken her previously for English 1, had an unfair advantage. She loves them and will go easier on them. This was bitter-sweet because I like the lenience, but didn't like how tough she was on her new students. With that said, winter session has 3 essays, and 1 quiz and a poetry presentation. Good luck!
Amazing teacher, she is a very sweet woman and brings up a lot of good points in class. If you see her during her office hours she will help you with your essays. Honestly I thought she was an amazing professor and I wouldn't have taken anyone else.
She's passionate about English, but I wasn't keen on her thick accent and scribble writing, nor the way the class was 95% discussion based. She lets the same 5 people talk and talk and talk. If writing isn't your strong suit I would suggest taking someone else. With that said, I did receive A's on my papers.
She had to leave a little more than half way through our semester for Europe to take care of her ailing father. But she was a good teacher. Take as much part as you can in class discussions and be sure to take your time on work. She expects you to work hard for a good grade.
Prof Engelmann is the sweetest, most caring english teacher i have ever had. It's not an easy A class and does require work and she gives you all the help you can get. There were three 3page papers, one 6-8page research paper and a final. Some of the stories we read were dry, but the in class discussions were not.
the best teacher I've had in my entire life
Very helpful professor. Although she has an accent, she knows a lot about English. Write good essays and you will do fine. Also, be prepared for discussion as there is a 15% participation grade. A majority of the class is spent discoursing on the material. Overall a good class to take. Recommended.
Professor Engelmann is awesome. Helpful, funny, smart, and she really cares about the students and the subject. Show up, participate, and put reasonable effort into the essays and it's an easy A.
Where to begin? She is a tuff cookie.Aim for an A because if you don't wou will end up with an "D".I got an A in her class and she really pushes you to your limits.Don't ever think her class is easy and always PARTCIPATE in CLASS DISCUSSIONS
she loves subject, i liked her a lot AT FIRST, she PICKS FAVORITES! i was NOT one! i skipped english 1 and took her class & she RIPPED my essays apart. make sure you know gramar or else you will get a B. Interesting stimulating lectures. keep your eyes & mind open in lectures participate Kinda necessary. dont need to read if you are good Bullsh**er
This is a brilliant professor. Intense discussion and analysis of assigned material. It was a great opportunity to discover various writers and pieces of literature. If you have an interest in literature, this is the lady to take. She highly encourages critical thinking. A fair grader.
This professor is an easy grader; nevertheless, her priority is not to teach English, but rather to deliver a "theme" about cultural and political awareness. I learned nothing from her at all and found her to be very unhelpful during the few times i visited her during office hours. Take her for an easy 'A', if that's all you care about.
She's pretty stubborn with her beliefs and doesn't try to hide it. Pretends that she respects other people, but if you don't agree with her way of thinking she grades you down. Expects a lot from her students (especially scholars). I don't recommend her. Try and find another professor. Trust me.
Prof. Engelmann selects deep thoughtful material to read and write about. I found her very supportive and she will inspire you to write to the best of your ability. Her class is interactive and I loved sitting in a circle where you can see and hear your classmates.
Not a good teacher. Not very helpful. She starts bragging about herself and her kids. Expects us to write brilliant essays by ourselves. Hard grader. She has a lot of favoritism in the class.
I found this prof.to be very kind, supportive, and encouraging. She chooses thought provoking material which is often politically charged and expects participation during the discussions. You must be motivated to keep up with the reading, and she will voice her disappointment if not.She is exceptional at analyzing the literature and you can learn a lot
I LOVED her! She chose very interesting pieces to read and discuss. Otherwise, she's really nice and encouraging. She never makes you feel stupid and always appreciates your participation, even if you say stupid things. She's not a tough grader at all and she has a real passion for English (and politics which is awesome!). Highly recommend.
She's professional and likes to hear our opinions. Very fair grader. There are 4 essays plus the final which is an in-class essay, and they're not that hard. I chose to write one of my essays from a right-leaning political standpoint (she is pretty liberal) and was curious to see how fairly she would grade it. She still gave me an A haha.
At first, I did not care for her class. But I came to respect her because she welcomed broad discussions, in addition to her views. Overall, she is fair, wants you to succeed and writing in her class is minimal. She is an excellent teacher (and an easy A IF you show genuine interest and effort). Take her.
She is a GREAT teacher! Very inspiring. You have to do 3 essays, 1 research paper and 1 in class final. Lots of class discussions, very interesting topics.
Her class was fantastic! She was a crack up! She grades a little hard on her essays, but if you see her in office hours she can raise your grade on your paper. Attendance is very important and so are the essays so DO NOT skip them! I really like her as a professor and I highly recommend her!
She is amazing, passionate, helpful, nice sense of humor, feminist, ... the whole semester was an interesting and rich journey ... .. and ill take her class Eng. 2 ....
She is the best professor I have had! Her class is interesting, and the topics covered are great. Her essay topics are great because I was excited to write about the topics. She gives you the option to decide your own topic for the research paper. She has a great sense of humor. She wants to see everyone succeed. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Difficult to get an A, but here's the secret: do every assignment she assigns (even though they won't all be graded),should know basic grammar rules, participate(READ), and finish your essay and ask about it before the due date (VERY helpful). If you are a slow writer, (I was the last to finish the final) most essays are at home. WORKFORIT!
LOVE her. She has a Croatian accent and is totally adorable. Very liberal. Also always helpful when needed. I only read the last book (required for the final) and still got an A. As long as you are good/decent at writing essays you should be fine! Highly reccomended.
Amazing teacher. Take her if you really want to improve your writing and analytical skills. A lot of readings including 2 books. Not for the lazy.
Dr. Engelmann will definitely provide the materials and ideas to enlighten your viewpoints on contemporary American literature. She is kind, helpful, and loves to see her students ideas that spark their interest. As it is an upper-level English course, being able to write well is necessary to succeed. Recommended for English majors.
She's a kind woman who I truly believe to be a wonderful educator. However, I think she's only good for those who are actually English majors as I was bored to death in her class. Classroom discussions tend to go on and put everyone to sleep. This is not a class for those who pass out easily, because you'll sleep through the entire semester.
Her selection of books is very interesting. Before, I thought it was a burden to read the books, but as you spend the time and effort, you'll enjoy the read. Plus, come up with thrilling ideas because there are class discussions and participation that can drastically change your change. put in work and time to get an A bc hard work pays off.
Amazing teacher. This class will improve your writing and analytical skills. Although Heart Of Darkness was painfully boring, you will need to read it for the in class essays. Do not take her class if you want an easy A or if you're trying to do enough to get by.
Really great professor. She is very passionate about the works of literature she uses and just about writing/English in general. She gives you specific instructions on how to write essays for her class and as long as you follow the instructions you should be able to get an A. I didn't even turn in one of the essays and still got an A in the class
good person, bad professor. Extremely difficult and just plain boring, not an easy "A" and wont shut up about the environment or her family. avoid if you want to maintain a high GPA
Great professor, offers all of her time to the students. Willing to help no matter the circumstance. If you are willing to engage in the readings and talk in class/ work to improve yourself, she is your professor. Whoever commented below must be insane
I was excited for her class but honestly it was the worst. Not only is it very boring but she comes off as unapproachable. As well the favoritism was very obvious and her grading on essays wasn't helpful either. I don't recommend her especially if you want help on essays and want a professor who sounds interested in what you have to say.
This is a discussion based class. We got into a "U" every class and "discussed" the books. The "discussions" usually ended up being the same thing being repeated. Incorporate what she says in class on your essays and you'll get an B+ usually. She is a bit obsessed with the idea of patriarchy. So beware--not an easy A for most non-English majors.
She comes off as unapproachable at first, but as the semester goes on, she becomes more and more amazing. I absolutely loved her and her class. She is willing to help regardless of what is going on in her life. I recommend her. Not an easy A but an A is definitely attainable.
Fantastic Professor
If you put in a little effort, the hard work pays off. Very understanding and will help you if needed. Just make sure to do weekly readings(they're actually really fun) as they are necessary for discussions and essays. A is possible with a little work. Fair grader and passionate about English. Overall wonderful professor (great for English majors)!
Professor Engelmann is one of the nicest English teachers I've had. She is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about her class and the environment. While some classes weren't the most interesting, her excitement at us being there and actively participating made up for the boringness. If you put in the work (like actually read), it's an easy A.
Never took an English class like hers. Sometimes I felt like I was in an environmental studies class rather than an English class, because all of our material was based on the environment. Our reading material is boring most of the time and there is a ton of writing to do. She's a strict professor who doesn't tolerate students who break class rules
overall a very solid professor. Pretty easy to earn an A. Lots of reading and discussion. Extremely liberal and she lets you know it every day.
Took her a while back and to this day still one of my fav professors. Thought-provoking reading material, clear assignments, and overall incredibly intelligent person. Make sure to do reading for hw, participate, follow her guidelines for essays and you'll be fine. Truly sets out to help her students, and a great class for English majors!
Tough essay grader. Write 3 essays, and then a final research paper and an in-class essay novel final. Lots of reading. Environmental focus heavily. Accent. Doesn't really grade numerically. Lecture and discussion form classes.
Professor Engelmann is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about environmental issues and incorporates a lot of that in her reading. She is very clear about what she expects and will help you out if you seek it.
Engelmann is incredibly smart and professional. She's chill but not to the point where you can be a total hobo and still pass. The class is only analyzing text so be prepared to read a ton cause you can't b.s your essays, gotta know the text. Other than that just show up, participate in discussion, and read prior to lecture and you can get an A.
Thought she was pretty cool throughout the year-- but grades heavily dependent upon her own views. She tries telling you otherwise, but that was clearly not the case for me.
Engelmann was probably the best English professor I've ever had. She is very clear and concise about the course and her lectures are very interesting and clear. She is a really nice person as long as you are a hard working student. If you put a lot into the class then you will get a lot out because that's how her essays are set up.
Professor Engelmann is probably the nicest teacher I've ever had. She is a fairly tough grader, she is pretty opinionated (liberal) however she does not put others down and has a wonderful heart. The class workload is standard-to-high, and the subject matter is about social issues. I wold absolutely recommend her, she is extremely helpful.
She hates patriarchy with a passion. Took her during the winter and always talked on how patriarchy is soo bad. She has a feminist mindset into achieving equality for women. If you write all your essays on these topics you'll pass for sure. A lot of participation. You need to talk every single day. Socratic seminar class style. Good Luck to all!
She's the best english professor I've had! She gives good feedback on essays. The books she assigns to read aren't long and they're really good reads. The class isn't difficult of you so put in effort and actually read.
Mrs. Engelmann's classes are so worth it! She cares intensely about the material she teaches and the well-being of her students. There is a lot of reading, but she knows students have other classes so it's not bad. This class covers the topics of the environment, gender, technology, and America through poems, stories, and film. Lots of discussion
The best teacher i have ever had! I deeply loved her class, as an international student it was not easy and i got a B, but i progressed a lot because of her class! She is deeply passionate about her job and makes English classes so interesting. I took her for English 1 and 2
Professor Engelmann is has a deep enthusiasm for literature, and a liberal mindset toward it's instruction. If you want to read and discuss great books without the rigidity of structure that so often strangles literature classes, this is the course for you.
so passionate about the reading its contagious. don't let her accent fool you shes an AMAZING teacher pulls apart the text and makes it digestible. Made Shakespeare easy! Show up to class and listen its actually very interesting stuff. she truly cares for her students and always tries to see the good in your work. rounds up and very easy going
Professor Engelmann is an amazing person, however, she is a tough grader but does give good feedback. Read all the books assigned in advance, because she has discussions in class, and participation is extra credit. In the midterm I received a C and almost failed one essay. I got tips from her and went to tutoring twice a week. I passed the class B
Professor Engelmann is a wonderful English Professor, and a better person. She is understanding and really cares for her students. She wants them to succeed She is a humanist and has very liberal views, but allows a very open discussion long as you back up your points with evidence or facts. She is the best academic professor I have had at SMC.
This professor really inspired me to start writing again and was very passionate, and a really liberal minded person in general. I only needed English 1 and 2 but I am going to take English 14 with her because I want to continue writing and enjoying the discussions we have everyday!
Prof. Engelmann is very passionate about English, and it shows. She's enthusiastic and encourages you to look deeper into the text. Not a tough grader, but /will/ push you. Overall very understanding. Hates racism, sexism, colonialism, and whole bunch of other -isms. 10/10 Sometimes brings her dog to class and lets us pet him.
Professor Engelman is by far the most passionate English teacher I've had in SMC. She loves literature and wants other students to appreciate literature for what it is. Lots of reading (It is scholars Afterall), and in-class discussions so do your reading, understand it and come prepared to class and you'll be fine. Participation is the key
I am taking her class "Scholars" in Spring 2017. I would repeat her class over and over again. I thought in the begging that I may not be able to make well, but I am getting B's will I used to pass ESL classes with 70% "C".
Amazing Professor!!! Such an inspiration. She made me fall in love with literature again))) Thank you!!
4 essays w/ one of them being a research paper. Theme centered on sustainability. Inspirational, rock and roll fun surprisingly, expressive, caring, helpful, reliable for advice. her grading system Is pretty clear. if you're maintaining an A, then your chances of getting an A as your final grade is high. however don't screwup on the research paper
She gives 4 essays and a research paper. She is a clear grader and has clear guidelines of what she expects. I tanked the first essay because I didn't know what to expect. She gives good feedback on the papers, maintain A on her papers and do well on the research paper and you will get an A.
she is nice but she is really tough grader. if English is not your first language she makes fun if your writing, and she doesn't consider the effort that u are putting in. Not a good prof at all
She is very passionate about the environment and sustainability. IF you aren't well versed in the environment and passionate writing dont take this class. I struggled a bit bc i couldnt grasp the topics that much. But if you love the environment and are very passionate about sustainability, this is your class. She also brings her dog to class 10/10
She's one of the nicest profs I've met and most people get an A or B. However, she cancels class a lot and tends to be late to grade essays. Grades for essays mostly depends on grammar, which can be frustrating, especially if you want an A, if your grammar is not the best and do not have time to go to tutoring. Doesn't post grades till the end
She is a great professor! She gives good feedbacks on your essays! I loved taking this class!!!
Fantastic professor and a sweet lady! I took her for English 1 scholars a while ago and then for English 2 last spring. She taught the class well, had us all participate at the level we were comfortable with, and had us read a variety of pieces. She taught me a lot about sustainability, a major theme of her English 1. I'm glad I took her course!!!
One of the sweetest profs at SMC!! Genuinely cares about her students and very helpful and encouraging in class. She can be kind of hard to reach outside of class (awful with emails but just go to office hours!) but she gives great feedback, is an easy grader, and is very passionate and inspiring to listen to. Recommend her for both Eng 1 & 2!!!
This was an interesting semester. She seemed to cancel class a few times due to her injury or her husband. Based heavily on the environment and sustainability. She was an easy grader if you tried and showed you cared. We read 3 different books and wrote 3 essays. Not a hard class she is pretty chill but talks about history in lectures not English.
I really enjoyed her lectures they were really interesting but nothing to do about english.
The negative reviews on this professor are kind of shocking. This was one of the easiest classes I've taken and she's really lax on the grading. Since it's English 1 she emphasizes essay structure and grammar a lot. If you know how to write an essay and read a book, then you can get an A for sure. Shes super nice but does cancel class a lot.
She's the sweetest woman ever and she's like a grandmother in class. She really helped out everyone when COVID hit and is super lenient with deadlines if you have an excuse.
Professor is very sweet and caring. She is a true environmentalist and connects a lot of the assignments to that to bring awareness to the harm being done to the planet. Her essays are very short and easy. She provides essay examples, pre recorded lectures to give more background for essays. Get a head start on the novel that is mandatory.
Absolutely love Professor Engelmann! I took her class in the winter session while facing many health issues at the time and she was extremely accommodating. There is a bit of reading in this class but she chooses very interesting titles and provides many resources to help with understanding and writing the essays.
Professor Engelmann is so passionate about her material. I took her in the winter session for her scholars class. There was a few essays, some reading, and some homework. She really cares and as long as you put out decent work it should be ok. She will help you out with your needs. I highly recommend, especially if you are taking scholars.
Professor Engelmann is truly amazing!! I took her for English 1 and 2 and she truly helped me grow as a person and a writer. She was so passionate about teaching literature and will make you enjoy the class so much. She is also super nice. Highly recommend her
This professor is good, I loved that she is very caring and considerate of her students. The class meetings are not required to join but it's better to go just in case you get confused. The only issue I had was she does not give a lot of paper assignments so you can't really screw up by accident on an essay and your grade will go down a few %.
Professor Engelmann is very considerate, and I would say she is the best professor at SMC. There are very few assignments and the amount of papers is very reasonable. The articles she needs to read are interesting and attendance at meetings is not mandatory, though she does post grades late. I would be willing to continue to take her through Eng2.
Professor Engelmann is great! She really cares about all her students. The class mainly focuses on environmental topics/issues so make sure you are interested in that before taking the class. The class mainly consists of 3 essays and 1 research paper but she gives great feedback and they are doable as long as you keep up with the readings/lectures.
Really easy, submit subpar essays for an easy 'A'. Difficult to get in touch with her, won't respond to emails until she knows that you are a good student. Attending office hours is nearly impossible. Doesn't post an assignments due date until 2-3 weeks before so it's difficult to plan in advance. Doesn't really teach, just asks for interpretation.
Prof. Engelmann is amazing. I'm currently taking her Scholars Eng 1 class. I love it. We have two essays, one research paper (which is the final), and some small assignments in between (discussions, quiz, short questions). She is very caring and as long as you try your best you will definitely do well. Not a hard class, very enjoyable. Take her!!
Prof Engelmann is the best English prof at SMC. She is so caring and I took her winter class which was very manageable, especially for a winter class. The texts you read are actually really interesting. We had two or three papers and some short quizzes but they were great.
The theme for the English course focuses on interesting topics such as environmental and social justice issues. She assigns mostly articles to read and a few quizzes, and about 2-3 essays on different topics throughout the semester. We have to read one book for the class and she gives you a lot of time to do the reading, followed by an essay.
Prof. Engelmann is not just passionate about English but also about the environment. Her Eng 1 Scholars class is very environmentally based and it is very interesting. 3 essays, some discussions, 1 or 2 multiple choice quizzes. I loved her class! Pushes you to think critically and is very doable! Take her, I'm taking her again for Eng 2 Scholars.
Engelmann is a very sweet professor. Her Winter English 2 class was based mostly on classic horror short stories & novels. 2 formal essays on 2 books, both managable with plenty of prompts. Other than that, some informal responses to short stories & a quiz on aspects of literature. Her lectures are nice, but you can get an A without watching.
At first the class was easy because it was just a few discussion post. We did not really learn to write essays well so if you are not good at writing essays or dont read the book she will notice and take off points. No extra credit. Not a super easy A but if you read the books you will do okay. Only a few assignments, 2 essays and heavily weighted.
It's not an easy course, but good for our future. The professor is strict with our grammar and essay structures, which is critical to our future writings. Though attendance is not mandatory, you can learn much from her lecture, such as essential writing skills and environmental issues. It's worth taking the class.
Professor Engelmann is definitely the best English teacher I ever had. Her lectures prepare you well for the essays and build your writing skills. She doesn't assign that much work so your grade is mainly dependent on the few essays she assigns. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn and do well in English.
took Eng 1&2 with Professor Engelmann. Great professor. Her class is pretty straightforward, 2 essays (1 for midterms and 1 for finals) 2 quizzes and 2 reading response texts. Do the reading, don't do it last minute aswell with the essay she gives plenty of time to write the essays (month in advanced). Use audiobooks to get through the readings.
Great Professor. Offers resources to help write a good essay. Do the reading if you do the reading the easier the class. 2 essays (midterm and final) not timed give a month in advance to write the essays. No multiple choice final just essays. Has two small quizzes to make sure you are on track with the readings. Audiobooks help get through reading.
I found this class to be quite easy. A few essays on some books and she grades light. 1 quiz based on some reading. If you do the work and put in the effort you will earn an A. Honestly, there was very little work for an English scholars class.
I took English 2 over the Winter session with Professor Engelmann and couldn't recommend her more. She gives a reasonable amount of work with a fair amount of time to complete. She provides helpful resources for essay writing easily accessible. Clean Canvas shell. Optional Zoom office hours weekly. Fair bit of reading.
Professor Engelmann is a great teacher. If you want to get your English credit done, she's your best choice. She's very clear on her grading and gives excellent feedback for you to improve.
Professor Engelmann's ENG1 is a great choice - clear grading, helpful feedback, and an engaging curriculum covering important topics. Paired with Unstuck AI, acing the essays and readings is a breeze.
Prof. Engelmann is great and cares a lot about the environment. I like that there weren't any major difficult essays, except the final paper, and the book we had to read was easy to understand. I'm not a fan of writing essays but Prof. Engelmann is a very fair grader. She gives you creative freedom and lets you interpret the story independently.
I took Professor Engelmann's class over summer. She's a great teacher who is deeply passionate about what she is teaching, even at the expense of her lectures being long and tiresome. My only other critique is the subject material may seem uninteresting to many, as it's mandated. Do not disregard any assignments, study, and you'll enjoy it.
super sweet and is such an incredible professor,, your grade is mainly based on essays (2) and a 8-12 page research paper. as long as you do the readings, respond to the prompts and provide evidence + analysis you'll be good. towards the end i skipped all the zoom meetings and still got an A. taking her rn for schl eng2 & its even easier. take her!
I am a science brain but professor engelmann has such an amazing way of teaching. She can be rude but don't take that personally. She made me love classic literature. I wish i could have her for more classes
I loved professor Engelmann, no wrong answers in her course! All she cared about was grammar and how well you were able to back up your analysis. I got a lot of praise from her and the only advice I can give is take your time! Spotify has a collab with audiobook so if you have premium look up the books and analyze how the narrator narrates!
