I took her for Bio44 which is basically Sex Ed. I think it's the only class she teaches. She is an awesome teacher, helpful and very educated - she knows what she's talking about. Tests are taken online at home and are therefore open notes.
Great Proffesor and highly recommended. Her class was actually a pleasure to attened. I learned things that will benefit me for the rest of my life.
AMAZING teacher. Although the tests are difficult she explains everything you need very clearly so you remember it and has plenty or review help. I still got an A as hard as the tests seemed.
very informitive great class open notes on test easy A

Prof. D is what she likes being called. She will easily give you a D or LOWER if you take her Bio 12 class. She has favorites, so if you're a guy you might be able to do your trick because she does get good ratings in her human sexuality class!
If you do your work and study plus show up to class you can easily get an a... but that is with almost any class so what i have to say is take her i am not the smart student but i still got a b
my very first college course, taken during summer. greatest class ever. most i've ever learned from any teacher. i was the kid in class with a question every 5 minutes and i benefited the most. pay attention to detail during class n take notes
She filled in one semester for bio 12 and hopefully it would be her last..... stick with sex.
Dr. D is the best! Lectures are informative and intriguing. Make sure to attend every class though. Online tests and a simple powerpoint in-class presentation.
her class was very easy and to the point..her lectures were interesting and didn't bore me atleast...she's a really awesome professor
Dr. D is a great professor, very clear and keeps the class interesting. all of her tests were submitted via blackboard. she's very willing to help out students, you can reach her on her cell 24-7. even after the class, she is willing to help you out. highly recommended
she makes the class very interesting. not a dull moment. she's very helpful. tests are hard, but are graded on a curve.
she has phd, but does not know how to teach, the test is very hard.
Take her microbiology class! You'll get so much out of it. Her lectures are incredibly entertaining and she helps you in every way possible.
Great teacher ever!! Class was fun. Tests were hard but some of them were take home. The ones that were done in class you were allowed to correct the test for extra points. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
best teacher i have ever had, funny likes to refer to e.coli as the "stuff that makes your**** stink". hilarious, extensive knowledge, extremely smart. helpful. TKE HER NOW! changed my life. tests were hard but i still got an A. A few people failed the tests and got an A.
fun teacher, taught us how to get proactiv results without the proactiv price (certain vitamins and stuff) made the class really interesting
She was extremely helpfull in my bio lab class, she really wants you to learn, and if you show interest for the class, she'll be the first one to help you out. She's a very cool teacher, and I love the way she's straight up. the only thing I don't like about her is that she does not reply e-mails or phone calls, but I guess is because she's too bus
Hardest tests I've ever taken, do the extra credit, you will need it!
Prof Hurlbut is amazing! She gives out a ton of extra credit, she allows you to challenge the tests, AND she curves. She knows her stuff very well and her stories are very interesting. Seriously if you get lower than a C in her microbiology class, you are just stupid for not trying. A girl in my class had a C but got an A- after the curve. AMAZING.
She's moody, her lectures/discussion sessions were worthless, didn't follow the syllabus, and was lazy! She lets her students challenge her grading because she's too incompetent to get it right the first time. The class wasn't too hard because she made 3/5 exams on-line but I promise you that you won't learn much. AVOID HER AND RIEGLE 4 PHYSIOLOGY!
I took her class in summer school which was the worst idea I've ever had. She is very intelligent, however is incredibly lazy; she likes to pile on a lot of tests in a short period of time. (I agree with the comment on 5/29). AVOID HER!
This professor is horrible. I took her in the Summer and she was absent for 2 weeks. She will give you online test in which you will learn nothing.
This professor is both nice and funny, and seems like a good-hearted person. However, the class felt really unorganized. Too much reliance on the textbook's website. Her lectures are just powerpoints taken from website, and all of the labs and quizzes are taken online at the same site. Made going to class pointless except for the attendance points.
I'm dropping out of her class despite the fact that I won't get my money back. I'm glad I'm not going back...she can't teach, nore has any energy or will for us to LEARN. It's all about the damn tests. I'd rather change schools than have her as a teacher again.
all these comments are harsh. i took her in summer school too and i loved her. you have to be some what compentent to pass her class. if you dont like biology DONT take her, but if biology is your major she is awesome. im also taking her right now for anatomy and lectures are never dull. DONT take rodriguez you will FAIL! he is HORRIBLE!
Very nice and very helpful. Puts all lectures up on blackboard and allows you to text/call questions to her cell. Applies to real life situations and lets you challenge all tests. Extra credit given for easy stuff. Study study study! If you're in doubt or unclear, ask!
She's a wonderful teacher. Her powerpoints are clear and to the point, if you study those and pay attention in class, you will pass. She gives extra credit and lowers the grading scale on exams all the time. She makes the information interesting and useful. If you hate bio like I do, take her you will not regret it.
Dr. D is the Best teacher to learn Anatomy from.. I had to re-take Anatomy and thanks to her everything finally clicked. If you have any objections to her teachings, it is not her, it is you. This class is hard, so study, ask her for help, and study some more. There is no better instructor at IVC for Anatomy
Great teacher, I received an A+ and im not good at bio. She gave me the opportunity to earn lots of E.C. and she curves the grades to help students, because you really learn a lot. Do the extra credit and you will be OK.
Professor Hurlbut is very funny. She has an awesome sense of humor and brings laughter even to a biology class. Her human sexuality class is easy. You just have to do an essay, five tests, and a powerpoint. Her tests are take home tests but they are hard. You really need to spend a good amount of hours on the tests. I totally recommend her.
Not really a good teacher. Doesn't answer e-mails and isn't very organized. You don't really need to go to class, just make sure you don't miss the tests online. Online tests take HOURS to finish, but they are easy and straight out of the book. You can do powerpoint presentation in her office hours.
I was excited to learn about biology until I took her. She was cold in the beginning, very short & to the point & very unprofessional. She always talked about getting high & curses a lot. Her lectures at times were interesting only on the topics that interested her. Tests are hard & is inconsistent with her lectures, books, etc. Her lab is easier.
as if human sex can get any more interesting, hurlbut makes it so. she's really funny at times, and knows what to say to keep people interested. the class has a relaxed air and can get boring if you're not in the mood to listen. most of the class is lectures and the tests are online (time-consuming but doable)
this teacher sucks unless you want a 300 question takehome test that takes like 4 hours to finish then don't take this class
Dr. D is great! She really made biochem fun, which is not an easy task and she's the first prof. I've had in a long time that is really on the students' side. She is relaxed about the labs as long as you are thorough. Take the extra credit whenever you can. She usually says what she's testing on. Just keep up with the lectures and you'll do fine.
Class is boring. You can pass the class even if you don't go to her class because she's not really teaching or expalin the lesson. Although her quizzes are easy (if you really read the book), still I will not recommend her to students.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR BIO 1. YOU WILL REGRET IT. Her lectures are mildly entertaining/interesting, but she does a terrible job explaining WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. The tests are impossible. It seems like she makes them as hard as possible. Apparently she's better in other classes, but again, DO NOT TAKE HER FOR BIO 1.
I just took her class because I needed to take a bio class. I ended up loving it though. She's funny, her lectures are interesting and informative. Very little homework and open book tests at home-pretty easy. You almost have to try to fail.
All the tests and assignments were online in this class which made everything a breeze. The lectures weren't too exciting and she can be a gruff sort of professor - guarded but will still somehow manage to surprise you with random niceness (don't expect it, though). Class was easy, she was cool, everybody wins.
The material is interesting but as class went on she became very boring to listen to. Class is useless because all tests are online. The test is SOOO hard and long!!! Takes hours to look up the answers and than input it in. She takes forever to grade test and papers. If you stick it out and complete everything it is a easy A
(Honest review from a hard-working student) Anatomy teachers are instructed to make there class challenging but not call themselves a b*tch everyday of class. Besides, she never tried to HELP you pass, rather force failure. This isn't correct teaching. No study guide, and she tries to make tests/everything super difficult. Not crying/just honest
Ignore the previous comment. She is just fabulous. She puts her own time and space to help you actually pass the class. Tons of extra credits. Lecture tests are fairly easy but can be bit tricky. Her lab exams, though, were bit challenging. Her tests are based on curve. Tries to make her lectures fun and interesting. Highly recommended!!
Easy A. Lots of extra credit.
Dr. D. is awesome. Her personality is fun and sarcastic, and combined with her hilarious stories makes for a very interesting lecture. I love that she gives little things to help you memorize material. She tells you what's on the test if you pay attention. You need to show up to class and you need to read the book. It will take a lot of time.
ALl i can say is that it is an honor to be in Dr. D's bio lab this summer semester. I hate biology but she really made it interesting with her exceeding wisdom in science and her bubbly personality. Dr. D should be teaching at Harvard, becuase she is definitely one of the best and caring person at IVC.
Hurlbut is possibly the most unorganized professor ive met. it seems she forgets her profession. she never responds to emails. i dropped her class because she never graded my tests or essays. First day of class you have a 7 page essay about your sexual identity, but thats easy. your online tests are not found in the book, and they take 4+ hours.
Cancels class alot but she records her lectures. You don't have to go to class like a online class. Boring but not too hard like some other anatomy teachers. She can be funny but Iam not sure how much she is in to anatomy
Hurlbut is really nice and funny but unorganized and the class is not easy to understand. If you are not going into the medical field do not take this class it is hard.
Cancels class a lot. For her final she used another teachers final. A lot of the stuff we did not go over. She talks more about her past drug encounters in college than what I should be knowing about in the class. Only positive side is she gives you enough extra credit to pass the class.
She is a great teacher. Reasonable and treats all her students fairly. Some might think she is rude but that's just her spunky personality and it grows on you. She is adorable when she teaches. Has personality like no other professor I ever had. She is helpful when you ask. She canceled few lectures but her recording of the missed lecture is up.
She is awesome & funny, both as a person and as a professor. She knows her stuff and strives for her students to learn. However, by some of the reviews here, some may take her personality the wrong way. But once you get past that, you will learn a lot & enjoy what you are learning. Be prepared to work though; anatomy is not an easy A.
She's intelligent and can be funny. Her lectures are not mandatory, she records them. Goes off on many tangents. Labs are DIY. I read the book, and did the online HW to do well in lecture. Practicums were fair, study the models well. She gives plenty of extra credit and generous curves for the slackers. Good effort = A.
She's a good professor, her lectures are clear and she's helpful. Just don't judge her by her personality, she is liberal. I would recommend taking her in the spring or fall semester because the work in the labs are less "intense" than in the summer, and you'll have more time to learn more in her class.
really good teacher! very funny! easy A, a lot of extra credit. hw online takes a while but very easy. tests are okay, 4 test one final.
Great professor! Willing to invest as much time in her students as they are willing to invest in themselves. An A is easily achieved if you put in the work and plenty of assistance is given along the way. Lectures are topical with additional real life examples and stories added in to keep things interesting.
Her lectures were clear, helpful, and enjoyable. She adds in her stories to make all the covered material have a real life connection; plus she is witty and funny. I would recommend her. She helps anyone who wants help, and she will explain things as many times as you need until you get it if you ask her for help during lab or her office hours.
Class was pretty difficult as well as the quizzes. Attendance is mandatory.
Very funny, always worked in real life examples that applied to the lecture, sometimes gets off topic with hilarious stories. A lot of extra credit, don't get behind on mastering chemistry. Overall, an interesting class.
Great class. She always uses real life examples during lecture. She's incredibly funny and makes class enjoyable. There is A LOT of extra credit so you have room just in case you do bad on exams. Exams are pretty tough. Got an A with all the extra credit.
So unorganzied, lacks clarity, horrible with grading, and has the worst attitude ever. Student don't like asking questions because she'll make you feel dumb if your question is wrong. She lets you correct some tests, but its not worth it. She's not the greatest, try Saddleback.
She is interesting but makes class very difficult understand exactly what has to be done in lab. Please don't take this class you would be better of with anyone els anywhere els!goodluck if you do take her ps she never texts back even though she says she will and ever replies to emails too
Very nice lady. Not the most organized. However, she'll answer your questions. Constantly suggests you come to her office hours in order to explain things to you - she shouldn't need to! Material should be clear after the lectures. I did a lot of studying with the book myself. She is funny though and gives TONS of extra credit which is great.
Chem is hard. Hurlbut's great. She gives you the tools to succeed & goes the extra mile to explain & meet w you, if you make the effort. Slackers, don't take this class.Pros: Lots of extra credit & add'l credit to fix exams, funny, engaging stories, explains hard concepts in her office til u understand. Cons: online homework takes a lot of time.
Hurlbut is a very nice teacher, and willing to help. The subject is a little confusing, and it takes a lot of time to understand. Her PowerPoints are different from the book, but she uploads everything on line. You'll never really know your grade until the end, but there is a lot of extra credit to help out.
I wish I took this class with someone else. She is so unorganized, tests are impossible, and her lectures are off topic. She spent more time talking about her personal life than human physiology. Only reason why I got an A was because of the massive amount of extra credit she offered. Probably because she expect us to fail. BEWARE
VERY UNORGANIZED. All her essay questions are found online, not even out of the book. I am a B student and have been getting D's on tests because she does not teach! Cancels class frequently and expects you to teach yourself all the material. Physiology is a very hard class. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR . Take Street at Saddleback.
I am so glad I am finally done with this class. She was the WORST professor I have ever had here at IVC. Her exams are insanely hard, doesn't finish covering lecture material, never explains labs, doesn't provide a study guide, and would show up late to Bio 12 discussion. This semester with her was HELL, I am so glad it is over. Never again!
I took Dr D for Bio 10 and Bio 12. Her coursework is really tough, but does provide a depth of understanding on the material. She offers a lot of extra credit as well.
Do not take this instructor. Horrible teaching overall. I had to read the textbook to fully understand the material. Never graded anything on time and I never knew my grade in the class. She still hasn't uploaded the grades on mysite when the deadline for faculty members to submit grades was a few days ago. Pitiful.
Two weeks into this course. I like it so far. A lot of opportunities for extra credit on tests, labs, and homework. Lectures are through powerpoint and she uploads it on blackboard. As well as her recorded lectures. Looking forward to the rest of the semester with Hurlbut!
I don't see why so many people are complaining. Probably cause they didn't put in the effort. Great teacher, very funny. Gives TONS of extra credit that help towards lab & lecture. Grades are uploaded quickly and powerpoints. Lab books & labs are fairly easy. Only downside that MasteringChemistry takes forever. Highly encourage you to take her!
Not gonna lie, biochem is a tough subject. It's not as bad with Dr.D! Gives tons of extra credit and lets you repair exams. Always there to help you. Gives out her personal number so you can text her. Lectures = powerpoints. Labs = workbook. HW = MasteringChemistry. Idk why people complain. I think she's a great teacher. Will take for Human Physio!
Great class with a great teacher. Hard subject even though it's an intro to biochem. She gives TONS of extra credit to boost up your grade. Hurlbut is hilarious and always tells real life stories that connect to the lecture. She's always there to help you. I highly recommend you to take her! Ended the semester with a 97% (A+)
She is very unorganized due 2 having too much on her plate. Havent known our grades 4 a couple months. Learned NOTHING in lab-spent HOURS trying 2 understand her terrible instructions on lab assn, making time 2 study 4 exams very difficult. Makes u feel stupid when u go talk 2 her. Theres EC, but hardly time to do it! A lot of unhappy students..
Bad teacher, UNORGANIZED! Doesn't keep on top of things & falls behind in grading assignments. Lab work takes hours to do & is more complex & unclear than it should be. I am an A student & didn't learn anything in this class & probably won't pass due to her. Do not take this teacher! Teaching style isn't helpful & she expects u to know everything
Read the book; don't rely on her for the exams. Labs are the harder part, but work with a group to do the legends. She was too understanding IMHO with the class with deadlines because she was so busy; almost every deadline was extended. She may not be on top of things but so were many of the students honestly.
Dr D!! She is absolutely, hands down, my most favorite teacher! She LOVES teaching and wants nothing more than for you to succeed! Tests are hard, but she gives extra credit, which is a huge help! I rec'd 2 B's and an A. I am a horrible test taker, but passed because I put in the effort and she believed in me!! Miss her already! :)
I never say anything about professors but she was so rude, and doesn't want you in her BIO 10 class unless your pre-med. So much work and never explains clearly, basically on your own.
Do not take her, you'll regret it. She never posts scores so you never know what your grade is in the class. She barely posted any extra credit this semester. Lab notebooks take hours and are barely worth any points. Lectures can be super long and boring and she skips over a lot expecting you to remember everything from previous anatomy courses.
I always recommend her for physio. Hard subj but you'll do well if you work very hard and keep up in lab. The lab books are detailed, and neatnesscompleteness count. Do NOT fall behind with the lab book. She gave really good extra credit when the class was lagging. She wants students to pass, and her lectures are HILarious. She's great.
love Dr. D. so much extra credit. Not sure what I learned but got an A which is what matters to get into nursing
There is definitely a large amount of work in this class from Mastering A & P, Lab books, and homework assignments. However, the bright-side is that she provides a bountiful supply of extra credit. She is fast paced and I had to definitely study off of the textbook to re-teach myself, but as long if you make time then you'll likely pass with an A
Her lectures are the best and she's so hilarious! I hate chem, but I never missed a class 'cause she's that great. She gives LOTS of extra credit and she tells you the essay questions beforehand, so tests are usually a breeze. She records lectures too. A bit unorganized & late in grading, but everything she teaches will be helpful in the long run.
She's the typical "nutty" professor - super smart and she has a lot of experience and very knowledgeable - more so than most bio professors bc she has actually worked in the pharmacology industry. She can seem intimidating but she's really quite fun and sympathetic when you talk to her one on one. She'll call you out though if you BS her.
Lectures give barely a summary of what you need to know, and most of the test comes from the book. You spend so much time doing all of the assignments that you barely have any time for actual studying. Tests are hard and count for most of your grade. Very unorganized and didn't get much work back until the end so nobody knew how they were doing.
Highly disorganized and assigns way too much, more than she can grade and keep up with!! She drills assignments at you left and right and . There's literally so much homework, mastering biology, extra lab work AND lab notebook that needs to be done this class is like 2 classes combined!! Don't bother going to her lectures, stick with the book.
Do yourself a favor and don't take her. Take Caiozzo. The guy is AMAZING.
yay Dr. D! extra credit, class cancelations, funny, not really like a class, more like story telling. Get on her good side and you will get an A. Labs are silly I hardly did anything but sit there and waste time but I got A. Don't take the other teacher he dies too much physiology and not extra credit.
Yes she is not organize at all don't grading and you don't know what you did in class till final grades posted and she is the last professor who post the grade in the end of the semester, but take her Do all extra credit and lab then you will pass the class with A, she loves everyone pass the class, she gives the opportunity to fix the first exam.
Hardest class I have ever taken. She expects everyone to have taken Chemistry/Anatomy. I didn't take Chemistry and she told me to drop the class because she knows I would not pass the class. There's alot of online homework. Labs are so much work and a waste of paper. She's always late on grading. Want an A? Do all the assignments and extra credit.
Last week of this class. Dr. D is extremely unorganized throughout course. You do not know your grade in the class. Went to the hospital sick, did not have any plan in place for this so subs did not know what to cover, or any information. Overall, she is rude, she is unorganized, and she should not be teaching.
Diana's physio class is an easy A, but you won't retain or learn a ton of info.
Very unorganized and gives a LOT of hw along the way that isn't listed in the syllabus, so you can't plan ahead. However, she is ok with extensions and if you miss a deadline you should submit it anyway. You literally won't ever know your grade until the class ends because she's slow at grading. I learned better from the book than her lectures.
So let me preface it with this: If you are good with Anatomy, Physiology may be difficult for you (and vice versa.) Dr. D is incredibly intelligent. She knows her stuff and is very blunt. She's an interesting woman who, I felt, really is there for her students. I would totally take her for other classes if she taught them. Love Dr. D! Take her!
love me some Dr. D ! lectures were just ok, learned best from the book. she is very empathetic, gives tons of EC. I recommend. she is very accessible. gives you her cell phone so you can call her. lab are A LOT of work, didn't learn much from lab. she lets you "repair" your test. its a no brainer, take Dr D
One of the worst teachers I have ever had.. The class was not that difficult but how she managed the class is AWFUL. Lextures are pointless since they are all her irrelevant life stories. Read the book to get an A on the tests and do the extra credit. Going in to the final she had not graded anything since February. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
She is snarky and sarcastic if you deserve it, but she also cares deeply about her students beyond just their success in the classroom. She gives great advice about anything and everything, & is infinitely wise with so much life experience. Gives you every opportunity to succeed in her class, and will literally do all in her power to help you.
I was skeptical of Dr. D at first, since she can be a bit disorganized. But, I came to learn that she is an excellent instructor and truly cares about the success of her students and has a ton of knowledge and valuable life experience to share. Tests are hard, but she offers lots of extra credit. If you want to learn, take her class.
Great Professor and inspirational professor who truly cares about her students. You must take Dr. Dee if you don't have a strong background in chemistry! All of her lectures were clear, helpful and super fun. Take advantage of all extra credit opportunities she provides. I could not recommend her more!!
Lectures were not great tbh, so you have to read the textbook to kind of know what you're doing (RIP). Exams are pretty hard as a result, but she gives EC which helps A LOT. The lab notebook is super tedious and lab instructions are disorganized. She's a nice person tho most of the time. Doing well is manageable, but you won't learn a lot.
This class has a LOT lab work and online HW that is easy but time consuming. Dr. D offers a lot of extra credit to help with test 3 & 4 which you will fail. Do all the busy work and repair any test/lab you can and you will get an A.
If you don't have a science background, don't take this class. You can still pass, but you're not going to learn anything. There's a lot of extra credit. It's all disorganized. Up to you.
BIO10 isn't meant for non-health majors, so if you're just taking it as a GE, switch to an easier science course like BIO1. It's difficult if you don't have a previous background in chemistry. Professor Hurlbut is generally fair, shares interesting information, and provides extra credit, however, she's disorganized and gives a lot of busy work.
If she can't finish all the material for the unit before the unit test, she expects the students to learn the remaining material from the text book. The thing is, she gets sidetracked during her lectures and goes on all kinds of tangents so you're gonna have to be able to learn from a book.
Doesn't finish her lectures but requires you to read everything for her tests. Supposedly, her syllabus says homework for each chapter, but posted 4 out of 20 CH. Often forgets what she said. Gets to tangent. Cancel class 10 min before. Assumes honors mean extra learning materials even though BIO1 is for non-biology students. Don't take her class!
I don't know how she expects non-bio major students to know everything. You end up learning everything on your own. There is no homework. Or extra credit. Her quizzes are very hard. You have to read the extra materials, appendix, under the pictures... Take it if you're one of those who can read it on your own. Cuz she ends up going to tangents.
i took bio 1 honors. she goes off on tangents and doesnt discuss certain sections and THEN expects us to master the material because it inexplicably shows up on the test. rude and if you say good morning to her shell chastise you for it and will chalk it up to not being a morning person. also misgendered a trans woman. dont take her class!
Very had professor. You are warned
This class is definitely more doable than Anatomy or Physiology individually. However, there is still a lot of homework and readings, which you MUST read in order to do the tests. Tests are nothing like the lecture, I would just read the books, lectures were not very helpful. Do all of the extra credits, and you will pass with an A!
Shes a nice person however, she asks test questions that dont directly represent what she lectured during class. There are a lot of questions for homework and she skips over PowerPoints but then tests us on that material.
The lectures have NOTHING to do with what is on the exams, just a ton of personal disclosure going on. Unprofessional language during lectures.. exams are close to impossible, however she let's you correct the first one or two..
She offers a lot of extra credit which helps with your overall grade. She is a very caring professor and is willing to talk to you outside of class.
She's great and very open to a lot of students. It would've been 5 stars but I gave 4 because it doesn't tell you in the course syllabus but you NEED to purchase this clicker app to participate in class. No study guides btw soyou'll need to take good notes. Homework is due every week. Literature Review+presentation at the end of semester fyi
Don't take her. Disorganized lectures, lots of busy work to do outside of class makes it impossible for you to study for her lectures exams. She goes off in her tangents during her lectures and explains some concepts too deep that you assume is in the lectures but does not actually put those questions into her exam. Learn from the book, not her.
horrible and IRRESPONSIBLE. Do not expect anything from her bc to be honest, she wouldnt care about you&your future. There are much better professors who truly care about and love the students. Seriously the worst PERSON not just prof I have ever met. I got an A though. (Put more time & learned less in her class)
Dr. D made a good first impression with her upbeat personality but lectures end up being torture because she often goes off topic. She skips slides during lecture but expects us to know details within the material. She encourages you to ask questions but makes you feel stupid when you do. Bottom line- decent person, difficult professor. You choose.
she is so flexible, very nice and kind, lots of extra credit, no pressure, make online exams open book, she just help you learn from your mistakes and give you opportunity to fix your mistakes and regrade your exams, super cool professor :)
Dr. D is awesome, she can be a bit disorganized but she gives anecdotes about what you ar learning to help you remember the information. She also gives plenty of opportunities to bring up your grade. DO THE LAB BOOK! easy points.
I took Dr. D for Anatomy and for Microbiology. She is super nice and very informative. A lot of the times she can be unorganized so be prepared to jump around. There is extra credit but if you put in the work ahead of time you won't have to really worry. Labs were super fun with her! I would focus on the learning objectives in the book for tests.
I took her microbio class online bc of covid. She's okay. Most of the other reviews are pretty accurate. Her tests: questions taken from the book, plenty of flashcards online to study from. allows you to correct one for full credit, uses proctorio for some hw: you have 1-3 lab hw for each session, usually due the next week.
Took this class during the pandemic. Got an A, but had to literally bust my butt with a whole bunch of busy work. Good thing is the Extra Credit, which made my life fairly easy. Hard to find the time to study and do all the busy work. Felt lost and didn't have a real strategy to study. I found doing the EC, reading book, and lectures help heavily!
Took the class online during the pandemic. Physio isn't the easiest subject, and her lectures are all over the place. There's a ton of assignments and labs are unreasonably complicated. Tests are extremely hard (you'll be teaching yourself for the most part) but the extra credit and number of assignments will get you an A.
Dr. D is hilarious and I enjoyed listening to her tangents. There is a TON of assignments. Which to me is a positive because you're not reliant on one or two things for your overall grade. Please do EVERY single extra credit assignment. You will need it. Although theyre very difficult, she has many open book tests. I didnt have time to read book.
Shes nice and I like her lectures but the tests are SO HARD. Good news theres extra credit opportunity + shell let you correct 1 test for 100%. I almost have an A due to bunch of assignments that will help your grade. But if you dont pass with a C in lecture and a C in lab (even if you have an A) you will not pass the class so be careful!
Most reviews right here are only because they did well. I'm gonna tell you right now none of the physiology professors here at IVC are good at all. They are very critical in what you do especially this professor. I've had both professors the other guy and her. She adds so much unnecessary info especially labs and EC's (20+ pages).
I received a B+ and I was afraid of her because sure she could be tough, but I guess it is what people call tough love. Her lectures and quizzes do come from the book, and I was so close to getting an A, but I was able to understand what is going on once the days would go by. Take her for microbiology and not for anything else!
This professor asks for too many useless assignments. Also, you have to use a clicker online in the zoom class I've never seen ivc use a clicker only uci kind of weird. Find another professor for phys, please....
Dr. D is intimidating however I loved her tangents---she's very intelligent and I found her hilarious. Attend every class, lab, and complete every assignment/EC packet. Despite practically failing every test, I managed to finish with an A. Be proactive with assignments, utilize good study habits that are optimal for you, and you will learn a ton.
Dr. D was great. Her tests are really hard but if you study well and understand the concepts, you can get a decent score. She's very funny. Lab with her was also great. A lot of extra credit! Make sure to do it in order to do well in her class!
Professor Hurlbut is, like any other physiology professor, very test and lecture heavy, but her lectures are very thorough and evenly paced to match all of the students energy. She is very forgiving come exam time and will give lots of extra credit. She also gives study guides to tell you what is on the exams as long as you have the will to fill it
Dr. D was a good professor overall. She is pretty fair with grading and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. There are four exams and some chapters are online and open notes/book. Lecture exams are definitely hard, but if you study hard you should do well. Show her that you are trying and she will help you. I recommend taking Dr. D for Micro!
Professor Hurlbut was an interesting professor. Personally, I found her tendency to go off on tangents during lecture to be quite irritating- however, if you are the type of person that likes to learn a lot of random facts, I think you'll enjoy her class. Tests were generally fair, and reflective of the classwork/homework.
Dr. D is a very fun teacher! Her lectures are very engaging, filled with many real-world examples, and jokes. Throughout the year, there are many extra credit opportunities. She is really great at providing help and working with you during office hours. This class is a lot of work and requires time and dedication ultimately.
Dr. D is a very interesting character and she loves to go on tangents. But, she is very smart and passionate about what she teaches. If you could find so else take them. The class is disorganized and there are is a lot of busy work. But, she does also give a lot of extra credit and she is very accessible outside of class and will help u if u ask.
If I'm honest do not take her worst teacher I have encountered. Completely self-thought class! This is a tough class not easy when the teacher is not pulling their weight its harder. If you want to learn interesting facts yes you will love it. She does allow the first two tests to have corrections! Do the extra credit only reason I passed. BEWARE!!
Honestly, I'm not sure what the bad reviews about her are for, I find her to be a really good professor. Her lectures are so interesting to listen to, and while she does go on tangents, they make sense to the concepts she is teaching! A lot of her tangents are also things that are useful to know. I personally am really enjoying her class so far! :)
IVC doesn't have pre-reqs for BIO 15, but Microbio will be SO MUCH EASIER if you have an understanding of biology (BIO 1) & chemistry (BIO 10/CHEM 4). Warning: Dr. D can be a little disorganized. You'll have almost 4 dozen wet & dry labs in this class. Do the extra credit, go to class & turn in all your labs.
Currently taking this professor and there is SO MUCH HW. This already is a hard class and with all the assignments you have theres NO time to study. She gives extra credit sometimes but it is not even worth it. You get 2.5 points for a 20/30+ pages worksheet packet! The lab reports are also insanely long and tedious. DONT DO IT.
Dr. D's Microbio class is a challenging but rewarding experience. While her lectures can be disorganized at times, they're engaging and packed with useful real-world info. Lean on Unstuck AI and the textbook to supplement her teaching - it really helps. Tough tests, but extra credit opportunities abound.
Dr. D's class was a slideshow each day and questions that would be graded during class time. She provides extra credit, though they require some money to complete such as a blood test. She also goes on LOTS of tangents leading to skipped units which you have to self study for the exams. Overall, lots of self-study, but tangents can be interesting.
writing for bio81 summer, Dr. D tends to go on a LOT of tangents and it can become a bit annoying but she gives so many opportunities for extra credit that you can't be mad. She was a bit disorganized but I think that was mainly due to health struggles she had during the semester but she was always open to answering questions in and out of class
Professor Hurlbut is pretty strict when it comes to test and quizzes. But overall her lectures are good. Kinda funny sometimes. Sometimes in her lectures she can be quite strict but she's not a terrible professor. I would take her again if I didn't have any other choices. But there are definitely better professors.
this is not an easy class, esp if you take it during the summer. i liked that she was accessible outside of class, but she is a tough grader, and I wouldn't say she picks on students, but she definitely does call them out. i am a little surprised to see so many good reviews, she gives a lot of work and is not a pleasant person
Very unprofessional and rude. Take a different professor if you value your time.
typical old prof who is incredibly rude in the way she interacts with students. personally, as someone on the premed track, i took sally ahad for bio1 and preferred her (she also teaches bio10). avoid this teacher if you can- complete waste of time.
I was hoping to get in a car crash on the way to school, just to hope I wouldn't get to see her.
Easy class to pass because she is very lenient on grading, but professor is unorganized and has an attitude sometimes.
If you have taken Chem 1A before you will find this class easier. If you haven't then you will find this class somewhat difficult. But Dr. D gives a lot of extra credit to boost your grade. Go to her lectures and take notes, participate, go to her office hours or simply ask her questions during lab, she is very willing to help :)
Lectures are interesting but she goes on a lot of tangents. I never performed that well on exams, I only got an A bc she allows test corrections for the 1st exam, rounds HW, and gives lots of EC. Don't skip a single extra credit, do them all and I swear you will get an A. Labs are annoying tho and she assigns a lot of busy work. Due dates flexible!
Labs are fairly easy but she stacks several in one class. Lectures are interesting and although EC doesn't help much for exams, do all of them, they're the reason I got an A. Several quizzes are online and open book including the lab exams. She's flexible with due dates and allows corrections for the first exam. Def recommend her for microbio!
I enjoyed Dr. D's class. She gives out lots of assignments, but also lots of extra credit, so it's not hard to get an A if you put in the effort. She was pretty lenient with deadlines. She can sometimes go on tangents, but she shares useful real-world info that I can apply to my daily life. The class was very test-heavy with a cumulative final.
To be honest, she is the worst professor I've met in college. We have to buy all the textbooks which is general one and lab one, we even have to pay for scantron every time we take a test, and had to buy lab material such as goggle. So I had to pay around $200 besides enrollment fee. Half of student dropped this class. + insanely lot of homeworks.
Writing for Bio 81 for summer. Dr. D is strict with deadlines, her tests are really hard, and she often goes on random tangents that don't have anything to do with the lecture. I will cut her slack because of personal stuff and health related issues over the summer. There is a lot of extra credit but they are time consuming for barely any points.
Only been a week of her class. Her schedule says 3 tests are open BOOK and I told her and she denied that and made me feel so stupid in front of the other students. I text her showing her proof that it does say open note and she texts me back w/ voice memo saying "cut to the chase, I don't like wordy texts." Definitely take another professor.
Don't know why they are any good ratings- horrible prof. Getting an A is doable, but the experience is horrible. Horrible professor and horrible person. Does not care about you at all.
Worst teacher I've ever had to take a class with. She rambles nonstop about unrelated anecdotes during lectures, and it's clear that she's extremely insecure that she's at a community college. she often would tell us that she herself was procrastinating getting her own work done and she would often cancel last minute. She does not care about you.
Absolutely the worst professor ive had to take yet. Extremely inflexible. Tests are super hard for a gened class. Insane amounts of homework. She will randomly ask questions in class that go in the gradebook. Lectures have nothing to do with homework/exams. In fact the last few exams are mostly material that is nowhere in the book or the lectures.
Not sure why there is no comments about this, but her tests are not only MC heavy but also FRQ heavy. It was not difficult to end the class with an A as long as you complete the EC and get Cs on the exams. That being said, the averages were usually very low and the workload was insane considering she graded nothing until finals week.
She skipped classes and poor teaching skills
I don't know why so many negative reviews. She is good person and get an A is doable. If you wanna go through hell-take Nguyen.
