She made the course interesting and fun, despite it all being memorization in the end. She explains why certain mechanisms work that way and that there is pattern to each mechanisms. It was fun and interesting course, just need to know that you should memorize everything from the notes perfectly. Easy course if you do that. She is amazing! :)
One of the best and nicest profs at the UofM. Despite the difficulty of this course, she made it a bit easier and made sure everyone understands each topic. The midterm and lab exams were hard. However, the final was easy and straight from the notes. If you only take this course in the summer, make sure to study every day and DON'T slack off.
She was absolutely amazing at explaining this. She gave really good analogies that helped understanding concepts but also helped you remember it during the exam. She was very kind and often said hello to me in the halls, proving she cares and knows her students! Absolutely incredible class and amazing prof
She's a fantastic professor. Knows her teaching subjects and kept me engaged in class for the entire 2.5 hrs! Another professor had recommended her and I am forever thankful they did. Course material was heavy because of it being a summer class, but I am thrilled to have had the pleasure of having her as a prof. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Great lecturer with extremely good analogies to help understand content. She adds a reasonable amount of extra (non-testable) information into lecture, which I found interesting, but others may not. She's always available by email with extremely quick replies, and is more than accommodating to arrange meetings to explain tricky concepts - 10/10
Such an amazing professor. Her lectures were peppered with analogies that helped immensely, and she knew how to hold the attention of a lecture hall. Always helpful, willing to answer questions, and consistently giving good answers. I would take all my classes with her if I could!
She's one of the best profs I've had. Super kind and helpful, and her lectures are explained very well. She uses some great analogies to further help her students understand lecture material, and she's always happy to help you or answer any question you may have. 100% recommend her!
Diana is an incredible professor. If she taught every course I needed to take, I'd make sure I'd take it with her. Anatomy is a relatively easy A, but requires work (simple info, but lots of info). She is always accessible outside of class if you email, after class as well (not rushing to leave). Lectures are amazing, does analogies and drawings.
Diana's lectures are fairly clear for the most part. But when it comes to her exams.. it doesnt matter how much you study, you can never be prepared. Her questions incorporate so many concepts together and she will often just change one word to try and trick you. If you want to study and have no social life for a semester, take her course.
Diana explains things thoroughly but always goes too far and doesn't stop talking. She gives extra information that is beyond what is needed for the course or tested. She is also an extremely hard marker and makes her questions super tricky (such as 2 of the above, all of the above, none of the above, etc). 10/10 would not recommend
Diana is really nice. Her lectures and notes were clear. Office hours are good, she is patient and willing to teach. I would say she is an excellent prof were it not for her exams. They are unreasonably hard. It's misleading how tricky the questions are compared to the course material.
Diana is one of the best profs I have had thus far and also one of the most challenging profs I have had. She is extremely well prepared in her lectures which facilitate note taking. If you work hard, study the course material, and apply the content you will do well. The exams are tricky multiple choice questions. She is very approachable.
Diana is an amazing professor and explains all topics very clearly and gives excellent lecture notes. However, she gives exam questions that are very tricky and require extreme precision where a single word in one of the questions can completely change the answer. But if you put in the work and read every question very carefully, you can succeed!
Diana's lectures are very clear. Lecture wise she is one of the best profs I know. If you take the time to go see her, she will take her time and make sure you understand everything. Unfortunately her exams require a lot of in-depth knowledge because her multiple choice questions are extremely difficult. Take at least 2 weeks to study for her exams
Diana is one of my favourite profs! Although the class is lecture heavy, she keeps it fairly interesting. She really knows her stuff, gives great analogies and draws out many diagrams to give you a better understanding of the material. I would definitely recommend taking her class
She's an absolutely amazing teacher. Besides her fantastic analogies, her pacing of the lectures is perfect. She's not too fast and not too slow. She always leaves enough time for questions during the lecture. She never makes you feel like your questions are stupid which makes you want to ask more, therefore becoming more engaged in class. 10/10
She is very nice and approachable, but she speeds through lectures and it is very difficult to keep up. It is hard to decipher what is actually important and will be test on. Her exams are very difficult and did not reflect what she emphasized in class.
Diana is an amazing professor that made such a difficult and boring course somewhat tolerable. Course was switched from long answer to multiple choice so nobody knew what to really expect. Diana was very understanding and provided practice multiple choice questions for both the midterm and final. Very approachable and always willing to help!
Bchem 2 isn't as hard as what everyone makes it out to be. Going to class is essential. I would suggest recording the lectures because she packs in a lot of info into each lecture. We had multiple choice, I wasn't a huge fan. It's easier to make mistakes than long answer. Draw out the pathways regularly & there's no reason why you won't do well.
An awesome prof that likes to build actual friendships with her students and help them succeed. She is helpful to all students that approach her. Explains difficult information really well but it is important that you go to class because there is just so much to learn! I would definitely take a class with her again.
Took this course in 1 month during summer and as my first university science course ever! She makes complicated theories easy to understand. Microbio with her was super interesting! Exams are fair. You can get an easy A but you really need to study and know your stuff (no different than any other science course). Highly recommend Diana Mlinar!
Breaks down complex theories to pieces, midterms and final are fair (do your share of studying, you should do fine in this course). Lectures are very interesting (her stories are hilarious and are relevant to the material) and she knows her material well. Really cares about her student and is willing to answer questions from students.
Gives great explanation and welcomes student to ask question. Lectures are very interesting, provides real-life examples (ex: application of staining) and she stories are hilarious. Great prof, would like to take other courses with her if possible.
Ive taken many courses with this prof and she is by far the best and most encouraging prof I've had. She genuinely cares about all her students and the course material, you can tell she loves what she does. Get ready to know mass amounts of material for her exams! If you like putting in work she's the prof for you.
She's probably one of the best profs you could ever had. Lectures were well explained and questions were well answered. Her exams were bit tricky, lots of writings and application, but these can be overcome with consistent studying and understanding of the materials thoroughly. I would totally recommend taking this class during summer.
One of the best professors I've had. She cares about her students, and throughout the lecture she will stop and ask if anything needs to be explained further. The examples she uses are relatable and makes the content easier to understand. If you study and attend every class then the questions on the tests are not that difficult.
Seriously the best prof I have had. She does talk quickly, but usually she is just explaining the slides. Always uses extra examples to ensure that her students understand. Can tell she actually cares about her students, and wants to see them succeed. Makes her lectures interesting, even the dreaded microbial diversity wasn't horrible for me.
Easily one of the best profs at U of M by far!! She is super crazy smart, emails back instantly, gives solid lectures and explains things so well without even needing to look off of her own notes. If you can chose Diana for any of the courses she teaches, definitely do so!!.
She is very good at explaining the course content. She is also caring and remembers students.
Awesome professor, gives background information or side stories on certain concepts that can aid in understanding. Her exams are very wordy, knowing everything on the slides in key to a good mark!
Diana is an amazing prof! Her lectures are so interesting, clear, and well explained. She definitely sparked my interest in microbiology and made taking this class very enjoyable. Her tests are hard though, you really have to know your stuff, but they're not unfair.
DIANA IS A GENIUS. super engaging in her lectures and very passionate about teaching. definitely favourite prof at uofm! exams were hard but nothing unfair.
Amazing at explaining stuff and always on top of things. Appreciated how fast she marked the tests, which were fine. Some question maybe a bit tricky, but she wants you to really understand, not just memorize sentences from the slides. Great prof and the class has a compelling content.
Good teacher. Expands on her slides a lot, sometimes makes it difficult to know what she expects you to study. Gives a lot of examples and knows what she is talking about, rarely makes mistakes, gives clear and direct answers to student questions. The first midterm was very easy but the second midterm was 20x harder so don't let the first fool you
You can tell through Diana's teaching style and what she says that she REALLY cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Gives in-depth explanations on mechanisms and encourages questions. Only problem you'll run into is Peter Pelka's students coming into Diana's class to learn from a respected instructor.
Dr. Mlinar is an amazing prof! She gives very detailed lectures and gives clear explanations for everything. She makes really god analogies and draws good parallels, too. If you listen closely, she gives hints about exam questions close to exam times. Her tests are a bit picky and very specific, so be prepared to know every detail.
she is absolutely amazing! Had her for the first time for mbio in the summer and I literally think of her as the mother of science lol her lectures are easy to follow along, she always has an analogy for everything, so I suggest you don't skip her class. Definitely one of my fav profs :)
Professor Diana is by far my favorite, her lectures are amazing, very well explained. I have to agree I think she's like the mother of science. She teaches pretty much everything microbiology, biology, biochem you name it. Her analogies are sometimes brutal but it will stick to you.
Unlods a tremendous amount of volume on you. Right before finals too. Woman cant relax. Tries to force to much volume in
Lectures are way too material heavy. Notes for each section are over 40 pages long. Way too specific into detailed. Reads off powerpoint slides that are posted on UM learn making it almost impossible to stay focused in class. Exams are worded in a way to try and trick you -- one small word/detail is swapped out. Crams in way too much information.
One of the best professors Ive had. Well prepared. Slides contain straight forward, examinable material. Is thorough in explaining complex concepts. Always is willing and able to answer questions outside of lecture. Good public speaker and actually seems like she enjoys teaching. Exam questions make you think, but never too difficult
One of the best profs I have ever had. Lectures are well prepared and very clear. She gives practice exams to give you a good feeling of what to expect on finals. The exams are moderately difficult, but there is no textbook for the class so if you go to class and study you will do well. Would 100% recommend!
Absolutely amazing prof! She's super approachable, gives you clear instructions on not only what to study, but what to really focus on. Make sure you go to lectures though because what she says could be tested on, not that she makes it difficult to want to go to class. She knows her stuff, never makes you feel dumb for any questions you might have!
She tries to trick you on exams with question FORMULATIONS, which is not really fair because it doesn't test your knowledge but intended to confuse and fail you. There is no way to prepare for her exams, except trying to understand the logic behind her MCQ which are usually very wordy. Doesn't test the concepts, but sentence syntax. Disappointing.
Diana is truly a gem! Her lectures are engaging, she brings up current developments in the field, and also has great analogies for remembering concepts. She has an awesome personality and is really approachable and willing to answer all your questions. Exams aren't easy, but she prepares you for it. Great professor! Glad to have been in her class!
Very difficult exams - like a review said below, she tests more on structure of wording and syntax than anything. Definitely unfair.
Diana Mlinar is a professor that cares about her students and will work hard for you if you work hard in the class. Would take again!
One of the best profs at the U of M. Her funny analogies made the difficult topics easy to understand. Her exams are hard but she prepares you well for them. Definitely take Biochem 2 with her.
Her lectures were amazing! Go to classes and go over notes over and over again.
Diana is literally the best prof for this course. Biochem is tough course forsure, but she prepares you very well and has great lectures. Exams are long answer so you really need to know your stuff. Very accessible outside of class and is so knowledgeable and wants her student to succeed!! By far my favourite prof at U of M!!
Diana Mlinar is the best prof I had ever had at uni. She explains things clearly and knows way more than what you learn on the slides. She really cares about her students and remembers them. Plus, she comes up with the best analogies to help you remember things. Her exams are very fair. No trick questions. 10/10 recommend taking a class with her!
I took this class during summer and its was good. You have to put ur own TIME coz exam is every week and too tricky.
Attending lectures is imperative with her since loves the application of the science she teaches and will likely ask questions that require you to think beyond the facts that you memorize. Biochem 2 with her is quite straightforward and as long as you practice your pathways as often as possible you'll be fine.
One of the best professors I have ever encountered. She genuinely cares about her students. That being said, if you don't show up to her class you will be accepting a huge loss. She gives almost the entire midterm and final away during class with her hints. She helps connect the material to the real world which I found very helpful.
Diana is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is remarkably intelligent, she genuinely cares about her students, and she is always happy to help you outside of class with biochem or just general life advice. Biochem 2 requires a lot of studying/memorization, but Diana makes the classes interesting and works hard to engage students.
Diana is favourite prof at UofM. She is enthusiastic , cares for students and most importantly she very intelligent .She teaches almost every Bio course. I could not attend all lectures because of my job but it worked out fine. Try to to attend lecture as her explanation makes course way easier.
The hardest class I've ever taken. She's a kind lady but her exams are the toughest. Very unfair on exams. You basically have you memorize every little detail and everything little thing she says and then go in further. If she is writing your exam - good luck.
Wow! Diana Mlinar is a spectacular prof! Her lectures are fantastic, very engaging, and her analogies make difficult concepts much more comprehensible. She writes tough tests, really expects you to truly understand the material rather than memorizing it, but she teaches so well that I definitely reccommend taking any of her classes regardless!
Her explanations related to lecture material are really helpful when studying for exams. I really enjoyed taking her class, really interesting. I would say that attending each class is definitely benifical because she does say that anything she says or that is in the notes as examable criteria. Textbook was not required (BIOL 1010).
Incredible at explaining concepts, lively, entertaining. Best prof I have ever had.
Diana is the best at being a prof and also a really kind helpful person! If youve got a question in or out of class, she will help you and make sure she doesnt leave until you understand it well. Biol1020 isnt an easy A but with her it could be.
A professor so good that you willingly get out of bed for a class of absolute hell at 8:30 in the morning. Lively, hilarious, and generally just amazing, Diana is hands down the best Chemistry teacher or lecturer I have ever met. If you actually put constant effort in (unlike me) you could probably ace the exams.
Dianas lectures are interesting and informative, if you go to every lecture and actually listen to her explanations of concepts, youll save a great deal of time studying for the exams. Her exam questions are more focused on understanding, but not difficult if you actually listen in lectures.
I had Diana for biochem and mbio1010 this semester. Diana would mention biochem concepts in mbio & mbio in biochem? like why. She sometimes made concepts in mbio1010 more difficult by explaining things only higher up courses should know. Her lectures are witty & her examples stuck with me to understand difficult biochem concepts. Do not skip class
I found mbio 1010 very fair. I didn't end up buying the textbook and now having finished the course, you NEED to know the lecture notes in and out to do well. Very petty, little points on the powerpoint were tested on. Diana got our final grades out within 4 hours of writing the final exam. A true boss
Diana is incredible! Her lectures are engaging and she is super willing to meet with students to help. Exams are hard but super valid.
Diana was so helpful in or out of class. Sat with me for two hours before the exams to clarify and make sure I 100% understood the material. Exams vary in difficulty (second midterm was extremely difficult) and the quizzes you have to work for but loved her as a prof!
Diana is by far the best prof I have had at the university. Her lectures are clear and engaging and she often puts emphasis on subjects that you are quizzed on. Some of her multiple choice can be tricky but if you take detailed notes during her lectures you should do fine! Hope this helps!
best prof I've ever had
She is a motivated professor to ensure the students understand what she is teaching. Available outside class or via email with any questions, she tries to be as clear as possible for the lectures.
Dr. Mlinar is an exceptional professor who applies biological concepts to everyday life for optimal information retention. I am not one to approach a professor after class, however, Dr. Mlinar created a welcoming environment wherein I rarely left without inquiring about concepts. Time flies in her lectures, but the information is easily grasped.
I loved Diana as a prof. She is entertaining and easy to listen to. However I found her class difficult. If you only study the notes you wont do well. She teaches a lot to auditory learning so if you struggle to learn in that style you may struggle with this class.
Excellent at explaining tough subjects and uses helpful analogies constantly. I took second-year physiology with her which is a hard course, but the way she taught really helped me out. Only graded on 8 out 10 best quizzes, one midterm, and the final. Lectures are not mandatory, but the in-class notes are very helpful.
Great prof overall, if you studied the notes, there will be no unexpected questions on the midterms or exam. Would recommend.
Diana Mlinar is by far the best prof Ive had! The midterms and exams are not hard if you attend class and take additional notes. She makes sure everybody understands tough concepts before moving on and is accessible outside of class. Shes hilarious as well! If you have a chance to take a class with her I highly recommend you do!
Diana is an amazing prof! Shes funny and easy to listen to even in long lectures. The class however is definitely a lot of work. I only wish she used Mclesses notes since Mclesse is the one who writes the exams. She also goes beyond the content of the class which is good for you if you plan on taking microbio!
Diana is the best prof I have had at U of M. Her lectures are clear and concise, she uses different ways to explain concepts and gives tips and tricks for how to learn/memorize the material. She keeps you engaged by using humour and you can tell she cares about her students. Exams were tricky but fair. Also grades very fast. Get her if you can!!
Diana is amazing at explaining concepts! Biology was always a course I struggled to get a good grade in but she made it so easy to really understand the concepts rather than just memorization. She is very approachable and kind. Anytime I emailed her with questions she answered within minutes. I looked forward to her morning lectures.
Diana is a very good prof and she incorporates everyday life into her lecture examples which makes it better for understanding. despite the fact the course is really hard. you need to study a lot
Diana is a very kind and caring lady. She is always willing to help you if you have any problems with the content. She gives great lectures and will even draw out diagrams to make sure you understand. The only downside is that I found her exams very hard with very detailed and specific questions. Overall, she was a good prof.
Diana is an amazing prof. So intelligent and caring. She draws a lot of diagrams through the course so attend class as they arent posted. She is available when you need to walk you through things you dont understand. Make sure you understand concepts as just memorizing wont work in this class
easily one of the most enthusiastic and passionate professors at u of m. she goes above and beyond to make lectures interesting and have you learn the necessary materials. she grades extremely fast and her exams are tricky, but fair if you study which you'll need to do. i wasn't particularly interested in this course but she made all the difference
Love her Microbiology Class. Absolutely great. Keeps her class interesting, uses the best analogies, cares about her students- helps outside of class. Would love to take her class again.
Amazing prof! Uses many analogies to help better understand material as well as draws many diagrams in class. Super caring prof and is willing to help students. I really wish I had her for some other courses I have taken in the past that she also teaches as I feel I would have learned a lot more and received a better grade.
BEST PROF THAT I'VE HAD SO FAR! She doesn't just read her slides, but actually talks about it in more depth so that you can remember and understand it better so coming to class will really help you. She's super understanding and made microbio super fun for me to learn.
Shes a great lecturer, she will draw lots of examples for the class. She is very good at explaining hard concepts. However, her midterms/final was less about the facts and more about applying your learning into different situations. You cant just memorize you need to thoroughly understand everything forwards/backwards etc
Diana is a very good lecturer. Biochem is a tough course, but she makes it interesting by using all the knowledge to draw a big picture of how it relevant to our physiology. She does talk very fast, and the lectures are very info-heavy, so attending the lectures is necessary. Her exams are pretty tough though, and focused on application.
One of the best lecturers that I've ever had. Makes her lectures super interesting and dynamic despite the huge class size. Makes difficult tests and exams (make sure you attend the lectures) but is fantastic overall.
Ms Diana is a real gem. Gives good feedback and is accessible after class. You do have to work for your grade though. Although the textbook is not mandatory, it would be great if you had one to supplement your readings. She gives clear detailed slides but explanation that she gives in class totally would make a difference.
Best prof at the u of m, if youre taking this course take it with her!!! the material was very interesting to begin with I woke up everyday wanting to go to her lectures!!! very inspiring woman. You have to study for the exams , dont do it the night before, the exams are multiple choice and each answer is very similar to the next. 12/10
10/10 Best instructor in MBIO,BIOL,CHEM courses at U Of M This was her first time teaching 3010, and as hard as it was (mostly due to my course load not leaving enough time for this one), I would take the class again and again. So many great stories relating the course to real medical field issues, very captivating to listen to.
EXCEPTIONAL INSTRUCTOR. Been at the UofM 4 years now and she is one of the best! lovely, lovely, kind lady. I would recommend her to everyone and anyone. It doesn't even matter how hard the course is. Show up, listen and review. You'll do great pals!
Diana is a good prof with good lectures with the slides posted online. I found that this class is very content heavy and the exams go into very minuscule details. Not a class you can study the night before for and hope to pass.
Diana is by far my FAVOURITE prof at the UofM. She shows true passion for what she teaches and she always finds ways to make the lecture interesting! Dianas exams are always based on understanding the material rather than memorization. You should always attend class AND TAKE NOTES of what she talks about
Great professor and is willing to answer any questions. Tests are worth a lot, but if your paying attention and reviewing your notes, you should be able to do it.
I'm lucky that I had Diana teaching me, she was really thorough in her lectures and made a difficult course it a heck of a lot easier. She was enthusiastic and taught the material well, I'd really recommend you show up and pay attention. The exams are not an easy pass though.
Diana is a great prof and really made hard concepts easier to understand as she broke them down! Pay attention in class and studying will come easy. She is great with office hours and will meet you at basically anytime. The exams are medium in that you have to apply your knowledge to most questions but she does throw in a couple easy ones!
Intelligent and fun prof, TONS of material. Exams are wild! Make sure you reread questions and multiple choice options several times because she will try to trick you. Use the textbook lots bc it has best explanations. Worst part is how hard her exams are, compared my exam questions to a friend with a diff. prof and my questions were MUCH harder
The course itself is heavy and has a lot of material, but I really enjoyed her lectures. Her slide presentations are easy to follow and she uses a lot of analogies to help you to understand what she's talking about. She is also easily accessible, if you email her with a question you will have a response quickly. She is also always up for meetings
Professor Mlinar is the best teacher you can ever have. Her slides and lectures are well explained. She is easily accessible outside the class. If you pay attention during the lectures you wont have to cram the material. She is quick to reply to emails. Her exams are practical so you need to understand the material and not memorize.
amazing lectures and notes. super easy to follow along. makes the material easy to understand by using analogies. for sure recommend taking her class. the midterms were tough but fair, the final was also fair. for sure do the practice exams and tests - they are laid out similar to the real test!!!
Diana is an amazing prof! Her passion for micro keeps your attention during lectures and makes you want to study. Her exams can be challenging so make sure you read the questions very carefully, but they are manageable. Probably my favourite prof at the u of m so far and would hands down take another class with her :)
Diana is a wonderful prof. Shes very enthusiastic with her teaching and she replies to her emails quickly! She is willing to help her students. BIOL 1000 was super easy as long as you know the material! Her midterms/final is fair (most likely is to apply your knowledge), so if yall taking it with her make sure you really understand her material!
Lectures are content heavy but this professor is very friendly, passionate and uses many humorous analogies. She is very good at addresses topics she knows students struggle with and goes over in class questions and quizzes thoroughly.
Super prof, really good lecture but hard examiner. You realistically dont have to go to class if you read the textbook but she will give hints in class what is going to be tested. Mid term and exam was hard.
AMAZING PROF. Her existance in the institution has helped me realize uofm isn't so bad.
Favorite prof ever! her lectures and explanations are amazing. Exams are difficult but fair at least. She definitely does not give out free marks. Genuinely cares about her students and will put in a lot of effort to see them succeed. She is very helpful when you ask the right questions. I've had her for MBIO1010 as well!
Professor Mlinar is the best teacher you can ever have. Her slides and lectures are well explained. She is easily accessible outside the class. If you pay attention during the lectures you wont have to cram the material. Her exams are practical so you need to understand the material and not memorize.
biggest blessing in u of m.
Excellent educator. A real gem. One of the best instructors I ever had and ignited my love for mbio. Very good at elaborating with the notes and excellent at giving real world applications. She makes good connections and makes the content very easy to learn. Exams are meant to test your understanding but as long as you put in the work, you are good
best prof ive had. very easily accessible and will email back about any questions about science related topics. extremely smart and explains lecture material really well. BUT, exams are tough. there was always multiple questions on exams where you really have to think about and they're hard to prepare for.
Professor Milnar is absolutely brilliant! She finds the best analogies to simplify course concepts. She also provides practice exams that will reflect what to expect material you'll expect on the midterm and final. Overall, she probably is the best professor I ever had at UofM.
Diana is easily one of the best professors in the sciences. Her lectures are very interesting to listen to as she consistently ties in relevant real world information to the lecture topic. She also explains things in a way that is easy to understand, rather than simply telling us to memorize things. Exams are pretty fair and test alot on concepts.
Dr Milner is amazing and inspiring. If you put in the work you get results but she's very clear in her explanations and approachable. She treats you so respectfully and a type of person I aspire to be.
her exams are difficult but she is really good at explaining concepts
Her lectures are very fast paced and she is straight forward with the information you are required to know.
She explained difficult concepts in a clear and easy to follow manner, with lots of diagrams.
Diana is awesome, best professor I've had by far. Very clear explanations of concepts, helps you comprehend the material not just straight memorize it. Exams were challenging but if you paid attention in class and studied her slides, are very doable. Highly recommend her, would take any class with her again!
Professor Mlinar is a sweet and passionate lady. She loves what she teaches and is very knowledgeable with the content. Her diagrams are great and so are her explanations! The only down side are her midterms and exams. they are quite difficult with some very specific questions. I took BIOL1030 with a different professor my grade went to an A.
Quizzes/tests are not the same material covered in class, does not take questions from students who need help, does not review material when students express that they do not understand
Diana is very knowledgeable, you can't disagree with that. She always mentions the fact that she is nerdy and if you're a nerd like her, you're supposed to know the things beforehand, just like she does. Her lectures are good but her exams are horrible because she forgets that students have other courses. I really wonder why she only has Master's?
I am a great student who works hard but If you have home that makes lecture viewing hard, dont bother with doing this class with her. I explained multiple times to her my rough home situation and how it interferes with me accessing lecture videos on time. She does not care & shows none of the compassion or flexibility needed to do remote classes.
She is really passionate about teaching. However, her tests and exams are unbearable. She makes you understand each concept to a higher level and will test you as if your life depends on the information. I fully understand the concepts now but cannot understand how she asks questions. Only take her if you want a deep and thorough understanding.
Im normally an A+ student, but man professor Mlinar's exams are something else, barley passed them, course is fine, but i'm not sure her exams are always fair (hint; find a different prof if your looking for a good mark)
She is the best Prof!! Anatomy 1410 is a difficult course and very content heavy. Its important to stay on top of your notes and lectures. Diana Made the course easy to understand and always answered my questions.
Diana is very knowledgeable and knows a lot about the material. However her exams and quizzes are extremely difficult. The material covered in class was very different from the quizzes and exams. If you want to get a good grade do not take a class with her.
Professor Mlinar is such a lively and energetic professor who teaches really well and will re-explain and take questions throughout the lesson if needed. The quizzes aren't too bad but the midterms and final are pretty tough. Definitely required a lot of studying to make sure you can apply the concepts.
Diana is an excellent lecturer and is very willing to help with any questions you may have. However, I don't think she deserves the rating she has here. Her exams are truly awful and in my opinion, it's not worth taking a class with her, despite her well-received lectures.
Diana is definitely a great lecturer and can hold my attention during this class. That being said, she really has not been considerate of the fact that we're struggling through a pandemic. The way the online exams are set up is ridiculous (you get removed from the zoom call if your hands leave the screen)
Diana is a queen amazing at explaining things but her tests and exams are unbelievably hard, pulls questions from nowhere.
She's a great prof and gives really great lectures, she really does want her students to succeed. Tests are definitely tough though but if you pay attention to her lectures and work hard to understand the topics you'll be okay.
Diana is a very kind and intelligent person. she truly cares about the students, and is super accessible, even during the pandemic. get ready to study, you are actually expected to know the material, not just memorize it. Exams are tough but fair.
I liked her lectures and she is a good prof. She was the only class I had which delivered live lectures. Downside, the lectures where only available for a period of time so you couldn't go at your own pace. Especially during a pandemic... I wish she kept those lectures up because this course is so heavy and her exams are brutal.
Diana is good at explaining concepts. She has good notes, can be disorganized. Although her midterm and final are extremely hard, she asks super detailed questions. During this pandemic, she has been no help to stress and doesn't seem to understand any student's situation. Being understanding/accomodating is important but she doesn't seem to care.
I chose Diana based solely on her high ratings, after having her, I can tell you she does not deserve a 4.6/5. Her exams are insanely tough, she sometimes wouldn't answer emails, she provides no other resources besides her lectures (buy the textbook even though she says not to). I also found her rude and inconsiderate especially in difficult times.
Overall, Diana was a great prof. Always was accessible outside of class if you needed help. Make sure you really try to understand concepts and not just memorize because memorizing won't get you very far. Her exams may have been challenging but if you put in the work you shouldn't be surprised with the content.
By far my favourite prof that I had this term! I did not do my best on the mid-term, and Professor Mlinar shared her own student experience, which made me feel so much better. She does test difficult, but she was easy to contact up until the day of the exam! She is such a sweetheart and every professor should strive to be more like her.
Professor Mlinar is a very good lecturer; she explains things using analogies and makes them easier to understand, however her exams are extremely difficult. The questions she asks require a lot of application of knowledge and are very picky about small details. She also barely provides any practice questions for the exams.
her tests and quizzes are insane compared to the lectures, there so difficult and you need to use lots of other resources to study even though she tells you that you don't. she was very interactive though and uses nice comparisons when explaining things
Really good lecture wise however Mlinars exams are brutal as almost every question says either none of the above are correct or more than one of the above are correct making the exams unnecessarily hard. The lectures were entertaining but the exams made me dislike the class.
Her lectures are good and she uses a lot of analogies . That being said the exams were very hard multiple choice and we were unable to go back to completed questions. I found that you could understand the main ideas and still do poorly because they were so linked to small details and with so much materiel and no clear outline of what to expect.
Had her for BIOL1020 in-person last year and adored her. She was super easy to talk to and helpful. However, she was different in CHEM2360. Shes a good lecturer, very engaging and will explain things multiple ways, but not very accommodating about personal situations. The way she proctors her exams is strict and pretty unreasonable.
Dr. Mlinar is the perfect balance between strict and caring. She gave very detailed, interesting lectures, but constantly made reference to Biochem, which was not a prereq for this course! I wish she would have given us more assessments, as we were only graded on a midterm and a final. This course requires a lot of memorization, but is interesting!
Good prof, Her tests and quizzes are a little challenging they make you think. Be prepared to read every detail in her lecture notes flunked my first quiz cause of that. But overall she shows she knows what's she's doing in her lectures based on the good examples and analogies she gives
I took this class because she had good ratings. Her lectures are good, this class is extremely hard. Exams were all multiple choice, that you could not go back to. She gave us little study material or guidance about the exam content. She would get angry when people joined the class unmuted, but then would not bother figuring out how to auto mute.
Anatomy with Diana was great! She keeps classes fun and throws in extra interesting facts. Always up to answer questions during and after class. Quizzes/exams seemed difficult, but that could be because it was online. overall great prof
Lectures were very mandatory. If you missed a lecture of half a lecture you were behind. While her quizzes were easy and open book the midterm and final were very difficult. I had her for an 8:30 am class and she is definitely not a morning person. Was very short and wasnt very enthusiastic answering questions if it wasnt convenient for her.
Overall, Diana was a great professor. She was clear about her expectations for the class and her lectures were super interesting. Id recommend paying full attention during the lectures because every little thing she mentions could be brought up later on an exam. Her tests and exams were very difficult but in the end I really learnt the material.
She made the course unnecessarily difficult. She would only keep the lectures up for 24 hours when the entire course was lecture based which is ridiculous. The quizzes were open book which made them okay but the midterm and final exam were very difficult. The other professors that teach this course are so much better and accommodated the pandemic.
Really good prof. Her lecture slides are very good however you need to attend her lectures since she includes a lot of additional information that would help for the midterms and exam. She really tries to involve the students and asks a lot of questions. Diana is very concept heavy and does not like students memorizing in her class.
An absolute gem! Though she has a reputation for tough exams, she prepares you well during class by explaining concepts exceptionally. Nobody does analogies like Diana does! If you pay attention and study to truly understand the material instead of memorizing, youll be exam ready. Btw, its never too early to start memorizing structures.
Dr Mlinar was an excellent prof. She is very thorough and presented the material in a way that was very easy to understand. She wants to make sure you really know the material instead of memorizing it so her midterm and final are really difficult, but in the end I found I knew the material and didn't forget it all the second the final was over.
Diana is hands down the best prof I've ever had. Extremely good speaker, and very knowledgeable, her lectures are amazing. Very caring about her students and approachable to ask questions outside of class. While she can make challenging exams, if you study the material you will do well, I wish I had her for every class.
Course notes provide excellent outlines to follow, textbook isn't essential but I'd recommend it to supplement notes. Lectures are recorded for 24 hours, I recommend waiting for the recording then taking notes when you can pause, lots covered very fast. Open book weekly tests, closed-book exams. Questions are challenging, require critical thinking.
Dianas an excellent teacher but her exam questions are awful and unnecessarily complicated. You have to know your stuff forward and backward to do well in any of her classes. She tried to run this course as similarly to real life as possible, which wasnt helpful to many people struggling through the pandemic. Zoom exam setup was horribly executed
This class is tough. Diana is awesome and super approachable, she held zoom reviews for us before every exam/quiz. Its a little hard to keep up with her sometimes, you have to know whats going on at all times otherwise you just get lost. Thank goodness for zoom recordings. I watched every lecture twice.
Teaches well but tests and exams were VERY HARD! HONEST TO GOD! The midterms were still duable to get an A+ but the final being 50% was extremely to ace! Take it with carrie if you can! Grades matter! I was disappointed. You can study all you want but the way she tests can be tricky! Trust me! Maybe its bc cheating was issue an issue bc of covid
Diana Mlinar is one of my favourite professors! She is good at explaining the material as well as she always takes time to answer people's questions in class. She prioritizes student learning and not just rushing through material. Diana does have harder exams, but in the end, she helped me understand the material quite well.
She explained everything very well but her tests/exams were pretty tough & required a lot of thought. Her quizzes you had the whole day to do them & open book, but her exams were closed book and you couldn't go back on questions.
Her lectures are very interesting and enjoyable: she made me love microbio so much I considered changing career paths at one point. The workload itself isn't bad, but your grades depend only on 2 midterms and a final, so make sure to do well.
Her class was really hard. She does teach really well she knows what she's doing but her exams are the hardest I feel like she complicates things for no reason Students should be tested on their knowledge, not the ability to understand her complicated questions
Dr. Mlinar is amazing! Diana genuinely wants you to succeed and will set you up to do so. Like any course, you have to study and stay up to date on material. But she makes all the topics very easy to understand with different metaphors and ways to remember. If people tell you this class is hard, then they uphold on their own end. 110% recommend.
Diana is a solid prof, but is the most difficult mbio professor. You really have to work for your grade compared to with other professors. However, she is a fast responder, and genuinely cares about students. I just wouldn't take this class with her again, as I need it as a pre requisite.
I think id rather get hit by a train than attend one of her class again. Majority people failed the midterm. If you think this course will be a simple one you're in for one heck of a ride... Goes by things so fast, terrible drawings, and her tests are horrible. Unless your Einstein have fun with your 50-60% in this course. Heck you might even fail.
Dr. Mlinar is absolutely amazing. She always shows up to class with a huge smile on her face, and really explains all the concepts quite nicely. If you just listen to her, and make sure to write down ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING she says/ writes/ draws that's not already on the slides, you should be fine. Just listen. Good luck!
She makes exams and tests really hard. She flys through the lectures and doesn't always have the best attitude. She does answer emails quickly, but doesn't help that she isn't the best at helping others understand her knowledge.
Basically this is a first year class but she teaches it like an advanced seminar. Yes its difficult to most because this is a lot of first time uni students but honestly shes thorough and gives a lot so it can be overwhelming but shes trying to give it to you like its the real world, not soft high school
She is very thorough in her lectures but when it comes to quizzes a lot of the questions have to do with applying knowledge which makes things harder. She says that the textbook is not required but honestly it should be because a lot of her quiz questions had nothing to do with lecture notes and everything to do with the textbook.
Diana is not an awful teacher. She teaches thoroughly but fast!! Her midterms/exams on the other hand, awful!! I thought I knew the material, only to realize I didnt. You cant just know the material, you have to understand the material. Overall, I ended up vw from this course as the second midterm avg. was >60%.
Lectures are really good! She gives lots of examples to further understand the content. The biggest issue is she didn't see anything wrong with giving students one chance to answer a question on an exam worth 60%. The exam is already hard but not being able to go back and forth on questions adds on to the stress and makes it an unfair exam.
Diana is one of my favourite profs! Granted, her questions and tests can be difficult, and require more understanding than just memorization, but she answers emails to questions really quickly to try to make sure you understand the material and genuinely wants to see her students succeed!
Diana will respond quick and she knows what she's talking about, but her exams and quizzes are unnecessarily hard. You cannot just memorize the information you have to thoroughly understand it and apply it.
Great prof who is passionate about what they do. You can tell they would instead be teaching a different course tho. Lecture slides can be a little vague. Hard test writer, you have to understand the material to do well. The only thing marked was quizzes and finals/midterms. Interesting lectures that keep you engaged.
Teaches pretty well, but the tests are so unnecessarily hard for a first-year course. If you plan to take this course you reaaaally need to understand whats going on because memorization wont get you far in this course. Youve been warned.
Diana is great at explaining concepts but her exams are always challenging. It's hard to do well in her class, I would recommend taking another prof if you want to get a decent grade. No matter how much you study, there will always be a curveball on the exams
Diana makes you think hard and apply the knowledge you learn throughout the lectures to real world problems, you must understand the content, do not just memorize it. Overall good prof !
Yes, she does good analogies. But her exams are hard. Like the midterm was alright (worth 40%) but the final (worth 60%) was really hard. She made us do one of the units on the last day. Finished it by recording an extra two hours lecture after the class right before the exams started. Final was at 9 am over zoom. Her zoom crashed on midterm though
Diana's lectures are great, she provides good understanding. She's great with answering questions and giving analogies. Unfortunately, none of that matters when you sit down for one of her exams. They are unnecessarily difficult. You have to do some conceptual deep diving if you want a good grade, lecture notes aren't enough for studying.
I found the lectures to be very slow. I tuned out so frequently because she would stay on one topic for way too long. That's a problem because she tests on every word that comes out of her mouth. Fortunately though, the exams aren't as bad as everyone says, and in my experience have been challenging but fair.
Diana Mlinar is my favourite prof by far! She obviously cares so much for her students and explains concepts so well with her analogies. Her classes are difficult and take a lot of work but if you think Biochem itself is easy to start with, then you will be disappointed no matter who you take the course with. She is a joy to interact with as well!
40% and 60% exams makes chances of success near impossible. In addition, we're provided with NO answers to past practice exams to know how to write the tests which consist of our ENTIRE grade. Diana is incredibly unfair with her course. By far the worst course I've taken so far. Save yourself the trouble and try to obtain the credit elsewhere.
Overall, Diana is a great prof. She made lectures very interesting and explained difficult concepts in a way where it was easy to understand and was always accessible out of class. I would recommend memorizing things right when you learn them and not waiting till the last minute. Exams were challenging but fair and were similar to previous exams.
Mliners classes make sense and she does a great job giving analogies for complex concepts. HOWEVER, you have to purchase a $50 notes package and no answers are given for supplied practice material. Midterm was 40% and final 60%. I find this way of testing ridiculous and found that even if you understand the content, they focus on minute details.
She's very clear when it comes to teaching, and she makes it fairly easy to understand the concepts, but her tests are insanely difficult. 40% midterm, 60% final and it doesn't matter how much you study because there will be curveball questions. The studying itself is also difficult because she provides very little resources.
The Midterm was 40% and Final 60%. Final was 8 questions with overal of 64 marks. Which will not make any sence. If you lose 1 mark, it will count losing approximately 1% of your Final grade.
I don' usually write feedback here but she is different. she is just awesome. I learned and enjoyed every second of her class. she cares about her students but we all have to accept that biochem is not an easy class, so to get a good mark u should study hard and definitely attend de class. she explains everything that you need to know for the exam.
Diana is really good at explaining concepts but her exams are very challenging. I would recommend taking a different prof if you want to do well. She will give you past midterms and finals but there is now answer key so you dont know if you're doing things right or wrong. The structure for her class is also unfair: 40% midterm, 60% final.
Extremely difficult exams. 40% midterm and 60% final makes it very tough to do well.
She is a good teacher that is for sure. She know how to teach and makes to remember the stuff. Exams are tougher than expected. But I major issues is course planning. She has 0 assignments in the toughest course and has just 2 exams that will decide the whole course. You mess up one you never have the 2 chance. I believe she could make it organized
Diana is by far the best prof to teach biochem. If u didn't understand something u could just email and she was always happy to help. The course was content-heavy but if you studied a little bit every day instead of complaining, u would do just fine. I recommend memorizing right when u learn info and then doing the previous exams in the coursepack.
Her lectures made the content easy to understand. However, the rest is PURE MEMORIZATION. This course will take the majority of your time. Also, there is so much weight on just 2 exams, meaning there is no room for failure which is nerve-wracking considering her exams are very challenging. Memorize the content ASAP and do all the practice exams.
Diana Milnar is a good professor but I hated the way she taught her class. She had 10 weekly quizzes throughout her course and had a very heavy midterm and final. Her exams and quizzes were very hard because none of that stuff was in her notes and nor does she explain it in lecture. Personally I would not recommend her as an into course professor.
I took this course because it is mandatory for the degree I want to take, but it is not an easy class. Diana is a good professor but she does talk a bit quickly during lectures. She did teach throughout the strike which allowed the course to end on time. The textbook is not necessary, and can get away with using the older version.
Diana was very good at taking the time to explain new topics and gave good examples on how we can apply what we learn in our future careers. However this class was very difficult and there was a lot of material covered over a short amount of time.
I took microbioloogy and anatomy with her. Exams are hard, but she teaches the content well and wants to make sure you understand it. Also gives great examples and relates it to real life which makes it easier to remember what you've learnt. Replied to emails fast, content was available prior to class but the lecture recordings were not kept long
she is a great teacher but she makes all of her courses unreasonably hard with high-weighted and tough finals. I took 1410 with her too same deal
This class was my first bio class in university so it felt pretty heavy. Diana is a good teacher and makes good analogies for understanding but her quiz and exam questions are very tough. You can't just memorize terms you have to apply the info to a lot of scenarios. I suggest just watching the recordings to be able to pause. She teaches quite fast
Diana is one of the best profs at u of m, if you ever have the chance to take her please do. She is really good at explaining anything that is unclear and makes really good analogies to help you understand material. One thing I must say, DONT listen to anyone who says her tests are hard for BIOL1410 OR BIOL 1412, Diana does NOT make quizzes/exams.
Diana is an excellent professor. Her explanations really hit all of the topics home. You do have to study...which is part of university. Her tests will bring all of the concepts together and as long as you understand everything you'll be fine. Don't listen to people who complain, they just didn't study/understand the content.
This professor was hard to follow online. She never showed her face, and only drew on her slides while talking. Maybe she is better in person, but online it was a mess. There were no assignments or quizzes, so our entire mark came from exams and labs, which was annoying. The way she formats her exams was also extremely difficult and unfair.
So Diana is an amazing lecturer. She really gives you a holistic view of how things work in the human body, and really tries to explain things. However, I would say the lecture focuses on the big stuff, whereas the exams focus on the really, really little details that we don't spend a lot of time on- I 'got' the lecture stuff, but didn't do as well
Ms. Mlinar is a brilliant lecturer, no doubt! HOWEVER, her exams are indeed very hard. You really need to start preparing ahead of time and understand the concepts inside out. She tells you anecdotes and draws diagrams to drive home the point. Overall, a good teacher but a very tough examiner! Attendance is mandatory if u want to earn a good grade.
Diana is one of the best profs I've had but the TOUGHEST grader. I agree with other ratings that you need to know the material inside and out, and every minor detail. The exams require many hours of studying. That being said, her lectures are interesting and she is extremely knowledgable.
Lectures are organized. Uses easy analogies to connect to the topic at hand. you must pay attention and print the lecture notes beforehand if you want the classes to go smoothly. Although she does speak fast sometimes and goes off topic; she is by far one of the best professors I've had so far.
Diana is an amazing prof -- her lectures make you interested in biochem and help you develop a very deep understanding. IF YOU NEED TO TAKE BIOCHEM, TAKE IT WITH HER! Her quizzes and tests are definitely tough, but her lectures and support are worth it.
Very slow teaching process, meaning SO much is crammed in the last 2 weeks and you do not have adequate time to study. Also just reads straight from slides
I have taken BIOL 1020, 1410 and Biochem with Diana and through and through she has been an incredible prof. Extremely diligent and informative, very approachable, and is very good at explaining things. She uses so many analogies that are so helpful to remember for exams. One of my favorite professors at the UofM!
Diana gave engaging lectures, I really liked her analogies and clear explanations. She would respond to questions over email very quickly and with detail, and was happy to meet in person (by appointment) to explain things too. I will say that her quizzes and exams were very tough, you really need to understand the material and apply it to do well.
She is super engaging and her lectures are so great, lots of detail. But you have to know all the little details for exams and know the material well. Dont skip lectures unless needed or you'll miss the small details. If your going into microbio take her class because she relates a lot of the content to her microbio or biochem classes.
Diana is the best prof I have ever had. She is so engaging in lectures and has a great way of explaining the trickier concepts to you. Even if you don't understand in lecture, she will send you a super detailed email or give you a secondary explanation during her office hours. Tough exams but she provides you with everything you need to do well.
attendance wasn't mandatory but I would 100% recommend going if you want to understand anything in class. she uses many examples during lectures to help understanding. only bad thing was that she was rushed at the end and gave us with supplemental videos for the last two units. I started studying 2 weeks before my final, you def need to put in time
You do not want to miss her lectures + they are so fun. I loved her way of teaching. Her slides contain information but she adds onto it in lectures and explains them using analogies so you don't forget the concepts. Definitely want to take her for future courses!
Diana was amazing, I loved her lectures and her analogies really help to get ideas through your head. The midterms and final were hard (she also does not make them) but as long as you put in the work, you should have no problem passing the course. If you aren't willing to study outside of class, I would not suggest this course.
Diana was amazing, midterm is quite challenging, understand it the best you can. Analogies are amazing and will help understand complicated topics.Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend going, since it will make the topics way easier for you. Overall great prof. I recommend repetitions as the finals is accumulative.
If you are smart, she is the best prof at UofM. If you don't have study skills, she is a nightmare. Do what you want with this information.
She is the GOAT. If you wanna actually learn then there's no better place than her lectures. Try to jinx the course and get ready for an F. Her exams are super hard yet fair (isn't what its supposed to be like). Besides being an absolutely amazing teacher she is a fantastic person, probably has the solution to any of your problems.
Nobody does analogies like Diana! Her lectures are thorough but she speaks really fast so its best to scribble down everything she says. With biochem, there's no shortcuts - practice a little bit everyday, learn structures as they are taught and do all the practice exam sets. I found repeatedly drawing structures/mechanisms worked best
Diana used so many analogies that it left me more confused than to begin with. Exams are unreasonably hard, yet worth so much (40 and 60%) and the question wording is hard to understand. She tended to go on unnecessary tangents and talk about unrelated topics. She does not give partial marks for long answers nor answer keys for practice exams.AVOID
You can tell she really likes teaching which is nice. Interesting stories. Her analogies are repetitive and kinda unnecessary IMO. But I don't agree that her assessments are unfairly difficult - you have to know your stuff well, but she doesn't pull questions of out nowhere
Great, but the only problem students really have with her, are her exams. She frequently uses "More than one of the above are correct" or "Which is incorrect". This kind of questions aren't testing your knowledge but rather your exam psyche. Faculties, like Medicine have banned these questions for that reason. She should consider that moving forward
You easily understand whatever she explains. However, her quizzes, midterms(30ish MCQ), and final(80ish MCQ) are challenging. Her questions come from her mind sometimes making them confusing or difficult to answer. Take her if you will do biochem. Everything I did in Biochem 1 is what she mentioned in Biol1020 which is less to study in biochem1.
The way she teaches is really awesome. But the exams she makes out of those lectures are something super hard. Two midterms and a final, that's it and which are way too hard.
May/June term - Dr. Mlinar is super engaging and lectures are fantastic. Midterms and exam are extremely hard and questions can be wordy. Don't recommend taking this as an elective if you don't need it. Most of my classmates had already taken it at least once. Pacing struggled towards the end. Diana is always funny and kind, but it's a hard course.
shes a really good lecturer!
Diana is one of the best profs for intro courses, I had her for BIOL 1020 and MBIO 1010. She is a great lecturer and you can tell she really cares for her students and their success. Her tests are hard, but if you attend class, pay attention, study, and as questions, it shouldn't be an issue. I highly recommend taking a class with her.
Tough class. Good lecturer. She also brings a live polar bear into class which was cool! Never seen a prof do that :)
Stay away from this professor. Does not care for her students and marks very harshly. Taught a class 2 hours before the exam and expected us to know the content for the exam. Trust me you want to change classes to another professor or take it next semester. Trust me, it's not worth suffering through.
Very funny and engaging prof. Weekly quizzes were lecture heavy, a lot of applied knowledge and asks very specific questions. Midterms were not bad, all multiple choice. Final exam was terrible. Be prepared to study every aspect of the information she provides in slides AND lecture!!
if Biochem is your passion in life and you are itching to be challenged, sure take this class, but if its a pre-req or you are taking it to satisfy a science credit, do yourself a favor and save your sanity. She makes this course impossibly difficult, hard and convoluted tests and quizzes , no text to do practices , bare min slides. Don't walk, run
Diana was a very engaging professor. I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures, as she used many real-life scenarios that directly connected to the course content. Her quizzes/tests/exams, however, were quite difficult and many students suffered as a result of that. The average of one quiz was low 50s and she got upset with the class for it.
Diana leaves a lasting impact to students; after taking MBIO 1010 with her, guaranteed you'd remember most of the content like the back of your hand. She might talk too much during lectures, but know that she will always emphasize what she wants you to recall for exams (either spend lots of time on a slide, draw diagrams, or say 'On an exam ...').
Her midterm was easy and avg was very high like in high 80s. Finals were so hard tho. After midterm, we do phylums and immunology which is so hard and done so quickly because obviously she has to finish her lectures before exams. Otherwise, her lectures are great and all her analogies she uses aids me in all courses,
Her lectures are interesting but her exams are very hard. Includes stuff in her exam that she says in class that aren't in our notes. Id suggest taking mbio 1220 with a different prof.
Professor Mlinar's lectures are very engaging, and will help with remembering concepts off the top of your head. While participation is not mandatory, I would recommend attending her lectures, as she provides clear analogies. She tends to test on application rather than memorization, which can challenge first-year students.
What she taught in class is mostly for understanding. In the test, there are just few questions that she ask that are actually related to what she explained in class. Tests are based more on remembering. Explanation sometimes is not clear. She made testing for this course much harder than it should be based on what she teaches.
just no
Diana is a great teacher in many ways, she uses many good analogies to help you understand which I found very useful. she does kind of run away with some examples but with the amount of material in this course, its a nice break lol.. I dont recommend taking this course condensed, but she does offer a lot of help outside of the lecture!
Attending classes, reading the notes and extra reading does not guarantee you passing, she sets questions in a very confusing manner that would be easy to fail.
I do know where she gets her questions. Run while you can.
Dont ever study her course. She is terrible. Always said that she cares about students but she just made tests so hard to fail people. What she explained in class seems interesting but she will not test you much on those. She made summer course much harder than it should be
What she repeats in her classes is not really helpful for tests. Made more stress for students in tests and always pretends being "nice". The tests are much more complicated than it should be for summer course. If you have a lot of biology knowledge before studying this course, you can pass. Otherwise, avoid at all cost
Attending classes, reading slides, extra reading does not guarantee you passing, she explain materials well and her class is usually interesting but she makes exam unnecessary difficult and makes you question your knowledge.
Diana is an excellent lecturer/prof, however to those who do not NEED to take Biochem, I suggest avoiding her class if you prefer utilizing tons of practice problems. She does give 4-5 practice exams, which sounds great until you realize that she does not provide answer keys. This makes it tough to study for exams efficiently! Great lecturer tho.
SHE SEEMS DOPE,but she ain't.She rants about topics that involve what we are learning more than she talks about what we are learning. When the midterms were returned multiple students emailed her to ask for clarifications on where they lost points and she refused to answer the questions, so no one knew what they did wrong or how to improve.VERY BAD
People say Diana Mlinar is amazing, but her teaching style is terrible. Her exam questions are poorly written with grammatical errors, making them hard to understand, almost like riddles. What she teaches rarely matches the exams. She also refuses to answer students' questions, making the course even harder. Avoid her class if possible.
Her tests are very difficult and she is not good with questions. A friend of mine asked a question to her via email and her only response was "What do you think?". She also doesn't really follow her lecture slides and sometimes goes to stuff unrelated and not as important making it hard to follow along.
Diana is very smart, and I very much enjoyed her lectures. She talked about a lot of very interesting things. The problem and this is what is not highlighted all the time is that she talks about a lot of random stuff and doesn't always focus on the course material in front of you. Make sure that you study everyday :)
Diana makes the content so much harder. The majority of class was spent either criticizing society or random medical applications. She provides no answers to past exams, barely responds to emails and when she does she provides no answers and just tells you to reread the question and blames you for not knowing. Absolute hell Run. Don't walk.
She is a good teacher and explains the concepts very well but her exams are very hard and makes the course more difficult than it should be. Compared to the practice exams from other professors who have taught the course, her questions are much harder. If you have the option don't take her, but there is usually only one section per term.
Lectures were great. She didn't just read off the slides, lectures were helpful in giving a deeper understanding of the topics. If you're skipping lectures you won't do well in the tests. She gives extra information during lectures which can be on the tests. Tests won't be easy but if you study for it you'll be fine.
Diana is generally a very good teacher who has a very good understanding of the material she is teaching. She teaches based off of slides but will go into way more detail then the words on the slides and gives good examples to help your understanding. Make sure you do her practice exams if she provides them, they tend to be very similar to the exam
She has the most engaging lectures and all of her tests are very fair as long as you listen in class! She is my favourite professor I've ever had.
She explains things well and gives good notes. The practice questions are helpful for learning and she replies email fast in most cases. But she would constantly give new and hard content until the last class. Be prepared for the heavy content when final exam approaches.
Her tests were the most difficult I've taken, with mcq having five options and tricky, lengthy answers. She uploads the PowerPoints in advance, and her lectures mostly go over them with some analogies. If you study the material thoroughly, you can do well without attending lectures. Grading is based on two midterms and one final exam.
Great prof for biochemistry, although I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you have to, otherwise it's a lot of rote memorization for nothing. Lectures go into great detail on the slides with many real life applications, and she keeps the material relevant to real life. Grade was based on few assessments (4 quizzes, midterm, final).
Not very caring. Does not have enough questions for exams that are worth alot. Each question can cost up to 2.5-3 percent of your grade.
Diana Mlinar is an great professor! She teaches the material well and explains the concepts down to a tea. She relates it real life scenarios and is accessible outside of class! She is a tough grader but the exams are fair considering all material has been given to you. People say she is scary but I will forever remember everything she taught!
She is just amazing, excellent teacher, way she teaches with real life examples stick with you when you are preparing for exam. If you really want to make sense to the material, just take her class with eyes closed. For sure, you have to study like crazy and study everyday, if you want to succeed. She is very helpful and ask her a questions.
Makes good use of analogies during lecture but that's about the only positive I can give. INSANELY rough grader, nitpicky about your responses in exams. No practice apart from previous finals where even simple value answers are not provided to check your work. Sets weird time windows for quizzes, be ready for any watermelon questions as well.
Professor Mlinar is an amazing teacher, she made the content for biochem 1 very approachable and always answered questions. The course is not easy and requires a lot of work independently to memorize structures and stuff, but the instruction made it easier since the content made a lot of sense. Exams are challenging but very fair in my opinion.
Seriously an amazing professor. Very knowledgeable and will drill the ideas into your head when she looks at you and says “Listen…” during the lecture. Very easy to follow and I leave her lectures with so much information! Absolutely grabs your attention and can keep it. And as someone with ADHD, this is the right way to teach.
I love Dianna Milnar! She's an amazing prof but her exams are difficult, more application based than memorizing. Stock up on flash cards!
Diana is an amazing prof. She explains concepts very well and always has good analogies for complicated terms. She's very thorough with explanations. For BIOL 1410/1412 she doesn't make the exams so grading is good. MBIO 1220 she makes her own exams and they're pretty difficult. She can also be a bit rude to students. Overall would recommend.
i love her !! she makes really good analogies to help you understand concepts in class :) 10/10 recommend
She's really good at teaching, using analogies to make concepts a bit easier to understand. However, her exams are hard and challenging. It's understandable that exams should have a certain level of difficulty to test our knowledge, but it would be helpful if she could balance the challenge with the material we've learned.
Shes a good teacher when it comes to analogies but her exams are very challenging. There was this one time where I emailed her confirming if one chapter would be on the exam and she replied with “I don't give exams information in email.” I attended the lectures but I just wanted a confirmation just incase. I was really disappointed.
awesomee lectures
Please guys don't take any courses with her. She is the worst professor you can get. Her exams are going to kill you. Try to find a different professor for any course. DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH HER.
Diana is very knowledgeable and great at breaking things down with clear explanations and analogies that makes it so much easier to understand so going to class is definitely worth it. Course content has a lot of memorization and you'll need to know how to apply what you learn but it's manageable if you stay on top of the lectures each week.
If you have to choose between her and waiting to take the course next semester with someone else, I would take it with someone else.
Organized, punctual and engaging. Her level of knowledge is incredible, and lectures are interesting. Grades harshly but fairly. I did not do well in her classes due to personal reasons, however if you study ahead of time and stay focused during the term, your efforts will be rewarded. Memorize and understand the material to get a good grade.
I'd rather wait a semester than to take her class. Super difficult exams. Nothing from slides AT ALL.
I am not done with the courses yet but PLEASE if you look and the ratings and think oh okay they are just exaggerating. IF I could go BACK IN TIME and take this course WITH SOMEONE ELSE, I WOULD!! I am taking it in the summer and it's hell. God help me, final exam on Monday
MBIO 4300 is such an interesting course and Diana has many stories to tell. I would 100% take the course again and as long as you pay attention to details in the slides, you will get an A+. SHE TESTS ON THE SMALL DETAILS!!! so dont over look stuff.
She is the best lecturer I've had! Super engaging and connects topics to real life to help you understand better. Her tests are very fair but you need to attend class as she says/writes extra details in class that are examinable. She can be slightly rude/strict but overall a really good prof would def take another class with her!
What an amazing professor! She cares about her students. If you put in the work, she's happy to answer your questions and clarify things. I loved the lectures. Diana does a great job of making the material relatable. While there is a lot of material, she frequently asks questions to gauge the class' understanding of the material.
This prof is so hard to take exams with. For you to take it as an elective is hard. Do not choose mbio 1220 as an elective, she will make the tests so hard. She was good at teaching but understanding it is not enough. You need to do beyond thoroughly memorizing to be able to pass the course. It's like a 3rd year course.
Run while you can. Diana makes this class so difficult. I am taking this class next semester with a different instructor.
She's a good professor IF you attend your classes. I took it May to June alongside 2 other courses and got an A (I'm that guy). Unless you're me, it ain't happening lil bro she ain't testing your memorizing skills rather your understanding, so no spamming flashcards of some random ahh stuff. Try to understand what's going on. Happy studying! -R
Biochem 2, this clase is no joke, the amount of detail you need to know is excesive, every enzyme name, every structure.Go to class, she has awesome lectures, i really love her, she is caring and always answer any question you have. Make sure you review every day, her questions can be challenging, but if yoy know the matierial you will be fine.
HARDEST EXAMS EVER!! I'm writing this review 3 years late, but am still traumatized. I have a science degree now and this is still the hardest class I took. Her exam questions are very wordy and worded awfully. You must understand everything in extreme depth, even if it was mentioned once in 1 sentence on 1 slide. Seriously worst exams ever. AVOID
Worst prof ever. Yaps for 3/4 of the time about non-important things, and then flies through the hard stuff days before the exam. Also puts questions on the exam about content from her other classes that you're not in!
She gives no practice tests and actually encourages students to not do the practice questions in the back of the booklet??? How is a student meant to succeed if they are not aware of what will be expected from them? I do not recommend taking any class with her as she expects you to know about other classes such as microbiology that is NOT a prereq.
Great prof, has a lot of haters because people either fail or do pretty well. Do not miss her lectures or you will fail, what she repeats, including analogies, “to the point of redundancy” as she puts will often be on the exam. Apart from that just memorize your structures, found the course extremely intuitive. Exams are graded quite harsh though.
Avoid!! Only gives a few practice questions each chapter that barely cover anything. No textbook practice. And discourages doing practice questions on practice exams given that have no answer keys.
Diana is the greatest prof. She explains things so well and truly cares about her students. The misconception that most people have is that they can just memorize the content and do well on the exams. Diana tests for understanding, which is much more valuable. Listen in class, ask questions, study a little everyday, and you will do just fine.
Amazing prof. Very personable, kind and clearly cares about her students. Bad reviews are from people who blame her for their shortcomings, not because of her teaching abilities. She spends hours of time meeting with students to help them. Ever had a tutor w/ PHD for free? No. Midterm had absolutely 0 surpises. U must apply concepts to questions.
While she's nice and caring to students, I personally found the analogies were way too overused and made me more confused than if she just explained the concept. Tests and quizzes were extreamly difficult and the marking is way more strict than it needs to be for such a heavy class. You either love her teaching or you hate it. I don't recommend
for MBIO 1010 she was good but right after we have biochem 1 and she was a totally different person. inn micro she made sense and was clear but in biochem it felt like she was speaking a different language. She does not finish her sentences expecting student to finish the word, then says yeah so now I don't know what she was trying to say.
Diana is seriously the best prof I've had. Biochem is a heavy class, so don't expect it to be easy. I feel like any bad reviews for biochem are just overcompensating for how hard the course is. Diana herself is so sweet and I'd recommend her to anyone. Her lectures are SO engaging and she is so understanding. She loves to meet up to help too!
I had Diana for both MBIO 1010 and CHEM 2700 this semester and I can very easily say she is the best professor I have ever had. her reputation of being crazy is blown out of proportion, she is an incredibly intelligent woman who knows exactly what she is doing and WHY she's doing it. Listen to her and pay attention, ask questions, you'll be okay.
THE HARDEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!!! trust and believe everything you hear. if something is mentioned one time on one slide two months ago and you think its irrelevant or doesn't matter. IT DOES!! if you can avoid this do it. do anything else. she also gives insane metaphors that don't help and questions on tests that make you question your life.
I have had this prof in two classes now and I can honestly say she is one of the least helpful and hardest profs I have ever had. Slow responding to emails and when she does it doesn't answer your questions. She also manages to make the exams in this class harder than all of my other classes this semester. Do not recommend. Seriously avoid.
Diana is an amazing lecturer, however the course is super content heavy, and little details are worth lots of marks on the midterm and final. Lectures are engaging, I would definitely take this course with her, I loved it so much I will probably take it again
Made my tuition worth it.
Mlinar expects a much higher level of application and understanding from her students than most other instructors who make clear their teaching goals. She included exam questions based off class discussion applications making attendance secretly required. Her exams push at your understanding of content past simple recall. avoid as an elective.
Diana she is extraordinary prof! For those who says that she is slow to respond to emails and is not accessible after class, I want to ask you have to ever send her a email or asked her to give time to meet? She is super helpful and meeting with students all time to help. All you have to do is ask. Need to put heart and soul into learning everyday
Although the material is easy, the exams were tricky. Diana is an amazing prof! She was very easy to reach out to and gets back quickly. Graded off of 2 non-cumulative midterms and the cumulative final exam. Stay on top of work and ATTEND lectures!
Diana is truly one of the best professors at the UofM and genuinely cares about her students. The exams are based only off of the material in the slides. Diana wants you to succeed and provides extremely valuable explanations and stories. Fantastic.
I think that people who rate Diana low was not because of teaching but rather because of not taking the class seriously. She is a really, really great lecturer and sets expectations very clearly. Yes, biochemistry is a tough course, but with enough discipline, Diana tries to set you up for success, if and only if, you're willing to put in the work.
