Excellent, very real and makes the class interesting. Loves what she does!
Absolutely wonderful teacher. Respects students. Concerned about real life application of subjects and understanding the concepts, not just irrelevent facts.
Great teacher, loves what she does. Tests aren't bad at all, just study and you'll be fine.
She really does love what she does. The tests are fine if you study. Sometimes there is a lot of reading and information to learn.
Wow. She loves humanities and loves the students. Her lectures are very interesting and I LOVED the class. Take HUM from Cales.
Great teacher! Lots of reading, though...Just keep up with the reading and you'll be fine.
Amazing professor! I learned so much from Sister Cales. She really loves what she does and it shows. She makes a genuine effort to learn everyone's name and she makes you feel comfortable enough to contibute to class discussions. Tests aren't hard if you keep up with the reading and do the study guide. Great class!
Sister Cales is a great professor! She knew all of our names by the third class and she really makes you feel comfortable participating in class. Study EVERYTHING on the study guides and you'll do well on the tests.
Cales is an awesome teacher. Class is fun and laid back, just get your work done. Take this class for sure if you get the chance.
Test are a little hard but if you follow the study guide you will at least get a B+. She loves teaching this class and it really shows. I would take her for all of my HUM classes if I could.
Believe it or not...there's actually a teacher with a fun sense of humor who enjoys having fun, but still teaches and demands your best work. She made Humanities fun to study. She also treats you like an equal instead of a second-class citizen.
I went into humanities thinking I was going to hate it because of all the horror stories my friends told me about their teachers. Sister Cales is one of the best teachers I have ever had and has made humanities my favorite class this semester. If you have a choice, take this class from her.
She was a pretty good teacher. She is funny, and keeps your attention. However, the tests were not the easiest, and the papers weren't fun to do.
She demands a lot of attention to detail for the tests, but doesn't always cover everything on the tests in class. I felt challanged and I appreciated the hard grading because it made me want to give more. I wish that the class discussion was more specific to the test, but she gives a study guide. It's an average class, but hard.
AFTER FIRST TEST: a kid who got an a was asked how...he said he just knew the test review sheet really well. That's it-just know that sheet. Sister Cales is wonderful: She made me laugh, wanted me to succeed, and even shot the breeze after class a few times. She even gave me dating advice.
Interesting and fun teacher. Makes humanities make sense. The tests are a breeze if you know the review sheet. Anyone can succeed in this class to puts in a little effot. Highly recommend this professor.
Sister Cales looks like your typical LDS mom-next-door, but she's edgy. Comment on guy in Michelangelo's Last Judgment: "This guy forgot to pay his tithing, and now he's saying, 'Oh, crap!'" She's a nut. Class seriously wasn't bad but I got caught on the papers. Take them seriously, follow her sample model, and an A-/A is possible.
Very disappointing class. She is a nice lady and all, but i felt that i didn't learn very much in the class. She basically gave an overview and then asked for peoples opinion on how it applies in our day. Great to know, but I didn't learn much from it. Tests are way hard too. If you like to learn by reading and not in class, take this class. Also, Class Scores are weighted so if you don't do good on one test, you are screwed.
Prof. Caes is seriously hilarious. Class discussion was my favorite part of class, and her stories made me laugh out loud. Use the study sheet and you'll do well. I wasn't sure I'd like Humanities, but I'm taking it next semester now too!
Cales keeps your attention, and does it well. She has fun assignments.
She was pretty fun at the start but started to drag at the end. I'd ask her to review some things we'd turned in and she ended up marking me down more for things I'd gotten right. offended? no clue but I wouldn't recommend her
I took this class just for generals, but it was so good. Sister Cales is a great teacher and very understanding. The class is very easy, you just need to study the review. Quizes are easy (you only have to read the chapter once right before to get 100%). There are 3 tests, but they came from the review and neither was comprehensive.
Sister Cales is the bomb! You don't have to put up with any crap from her as far as grades go. The whole test is on the study guide. Know the study guide, get an A. She tells you how she wants your papers written. Do it and get an A. I LOVED this about her. Plus, she is a really FUN teacher and makes the time go by fast.
Diane Cales is an excellent professor. She may be my favorite professor I ever had. I just took her class as a GE but loved it! I'd recommend just taking the class for fun even.
Hands down best Hum. teacher ever. She makes it interesting, has great real-life stories to back up concepts we learn about in class, and makes us think for ourselves.
She makes lecture fun. She is so nice! A lot of reading of various works, that are not covered too much on the test. So your daily work for the class doesn't have to do with the test. There is a study guide, but you mostly have to learn it on your own.
This class requires a lot of small papers and projects, but Cales is a phenomenal teacher. She is halarious yet stays on topic and explains concepts well. Lots of work, but easy to pay attention and learn if you are willing.
Prof. Cales is one of my favorite teachers. This class was so enjoyable due to her wit and easy teaching style. If you do your reading you will get A's on the quizzes. The midterm and final are difficult only if you don't study the material. I got an A in this class, but more importantly I learned so much. This was my favorite class last semester.
Not at all like the previous posters describe. Stands at a podium all class and talks and asks really simple questions. Do you like 10 page, single-spaced study guides for the mid-term and final? Me either. Look somewhere else if your not a humanities major.
Best Teacher ever!! A lot of reading required and is a bit hard to impress with papers. But, if you ask for her help, she kindly helps. Tests are not that bad if you go over the study guide. If you do well on the essay portion, which is pretty easy, you'll do good!!
Hated this class. Don't take it unless you are a Humanities major or enjoy memorizing facts and art. She is very hard to please on the papers so you have to do well on the tests. Which require 10 page study guides that are really detailed. Final you have to identify music, titles in different languages, and songs are 5 minutes long each. :(
she knows her stuff, avid about her topic. her tests are ridiculous, almost impossible to learn all the material. her grading rubric is harder than my honors english teacher for papers. don't take this class
I learned a lot in her class. She likes to ask questions in class that spark discussion. She does in-class quizzes that are easy if you do the reading. The tests come mostly from lectures so pay attention. You do need to identify a lot of artwork too. The class requires a lot of reading so be ready. I didn't really do it but managed to get an A.
Love her. Love the Class. Love the subject. Study the study guides and you should do fine on the tests. Classes are interesting and though provoking. Would highly recommend this class for anyone. :)
THE BEST teacher I have had while in college- took 2 classes from her. She is organized, leads great class discussions, makes material interesting, lets you know exactly what to expect. She expects you to do your work- if that scares you then you shouldn't have gotten into BYU. Weekly quizes over reading, 3 or 4 response paper essays, 2-3 tests.
I loved Sister Cales. She has spunk. She really knows her stuff and I enjoyed her class lectures. There is alot of work but it is easy. Mostly chapter readings and quizzes on them.. two page papers.. a class presentation and tests.
Subject matter was interesting and I liked listening to Dr. Cales. There are pop quizzes every once in a while about the reading... I never did to hot on those. Tests are pretty hard. But I learned a lot!
Great class! I took this class at the suggestion of a department adviser. I am very glad I did. I love it. She is an excellent teacher bringing lots of discussion into the class. It is not an easy A but if you do the work and study the study guide you will get a good grade in the class. I have already signed up for one of her classes again!!!
Wow. What a great class. I retook this class this semester and had a completely different experience than the first time I took it. I am walking away from the class changed a little. If you have to take this class, take it from her.
Sister Cales made this one of my favorite classes. She is really interested in everything that we go over in class and you learn a lot. The homework load isn't bad at all and the tests are easy if you study her study guides. I highly recommend her!
She is a great teacher. Yes, the class is challenging but if you do the readings and take notes in class, you will do fine. There is a quiz once a week, three papers throughout the semester, and one midterm and a final. Memorize the study guide and you will be fine for the tests. Really enjoyed this class!! I would take from her again.
Sis. Cales teaches really well. The reading is not boring if you are interested in the subject, and there are quizzes every class for the reading. You need to write three papers and make sure you read her guidelines to do well!! There are two tests. Make sure you fill out the studyguide and memorize the pictures. She is really fair on the grading.
I am writing this review halfway through the semester rather than at the end because I want everyone to take this class from her in the Winter 2014 term!!! I love Dr. Cales so much. The class has already changed the way I think about the world. Dr. Cales is so interesting and has so much clarity in her view of the world.
This is the worst class i have ever taken. she is so monotone and all she does is talk and this is a GE class and she acts like everyone already knows everything. she is rude and her way is the only way. doesnt care at all about students and them doing well in class. so not worth it. Her grading is so hard on the students and tests are hard too.
Sister Cales is awesome! She prepares well for class and keeps her lectures very interesting with good class discussion. She grades papers quickly and fairly, and the tests are straight forward. If you put in the time and do the reading, you can receive the grade you want.
This was probably the worst teacher I took class from. She is not organized at all and expects a lot more work for a class that is a GE if you can take this class from someone else I would definitely encourage it. I may have received an A but it was not enjoyable at all and took a ton of pointless work! Papers were the worst!
If it wasn't for the subject matter and my TA, I'm pretty sure I would have hated this class. Professor Cales' PowerPoints are super confusing and cluttered with unimportant details. However, as long as you do the reading, you should be good. Because the class is pretty easy. I just didn't enjoy her lectures.
This class was very easy and not challenging for me. You'll soon find that lectures seem to be pointless since you have a very detailed study guide for exams. If you study with guides and go to TA reviews you will be golden on tests. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures but is for TA labs. Great way to get a general done!
She is very nice but she gets off topic a lot and expects you to know A LOT of things for the exam even though most of it won't be on it. Boring lectures. No real chance for extra credit.
Professor Cales is a really great teacher. Because of her class I decided to change my major to Humanities, and I've been so happy I did. Class sizes are large, so there's not a lot of one-on-one interaction, but Friday classes are divided into sections with your TA, so that's when you can get personal help and feedback. This was a super easy class
Cales is a funny, older woman. She has little quirks, but I think she's hilarious. Lectures are not super mandatory, the study guides are elaborate and a lot of it will not even show up on the test. She tells you exactly what to study, and provides the outline of each test.
Professor Cales's lectures are basically the same material covered in the textbook. Although she said attendance was mandatory, I found it sometimes unnecessary to go to class. She posts her lecture slides and only tests you on the things listed on the study guide. Know the study guide really well. Lots of memorization, but an easy A class.
Dr. Cales has changed my life! Took her for 101 and 202 and she is honestly such a great professor. Her classes are hard, especially 202, but if you read and know the study guide really well you will be golden! Take Humanities from Cales! Got an A in both
Sister Cales is a great professor! Honestly, as long as you show up and do the readings you will be fine. Easy to work with and posts all lecture slides on Learning Suite with study guides.
Professor Cales had very dry lectures She doesn't make things very interesting. Whenever I emailed for help she seemed unwilling to help. While I did very well in the class it was not due to her help, it was due to attending TA reviews & memorizing all of the information. There is so much reading and you need to do it for the pop quizzes.
Good teacher, easy class, she loves the subject she teaches so that makes it enjoyable
This class was graded heavy for only being a GE. The grading's done on the papers are harder than they should be, papers are treated more like being in writing 150 or English classes rather than humanities, and I'm an English major. Heavy lectures. Lots of reading up to 60 pages per night. Don't skip class, because you probably won't pass.
Different grading method for the response papers (there are a bunch of papers but they're only 1.5 pgs) but once I got used to that I did well in the class. Professor Cales is really nice and enjoys the subject a lot. Lots of reading, but SparkNotes was super helpful. Teaches life lessons, not just history. Overall, worth it and I'm glad I took it.
Pretty good professor, but her lectures tended to be somewhat dry. There's lots of reading, and weekly essays (if you're good at writing, that helps your grade a lot). Tests covered a lot of material, but she tells you everything you need to know. She knows the subject really well, and I learned a lot from her class. Glad I took it from her.
I took this class over spring online. It was GREAT! Definitely recommend it. You can use notes on the exams, which is a life savior. I thoroughly enjoyed the class as well.
This class was good for GE credit and easy to keep up with. At times lectures were a little boring but the subject matter was interesting. There were a few papers but they were not hard or very long.
I took this class online. It was a pretty chill class. Lots of assignments, but they don't take long to do. Lots of memorizing for tests. Easy to get a good grade if you just take the time. She loves the subject matter, so that helps too.
I took this class online in the spring and it was pretty easy. Two 3-page essays, but they are graded super easy. Four exams, each 50 questions and none of them are cumulative, so that was AWESOME! Lots of busy work. I took other online classes and they treated the class as a MWF class, but this class had a lesson or more each day.
Loved her class- learned a lot!
Great class. I took the online version, and many discussion boards existed that seemed to be a time consumer more than learning tool (but, this has nothing to do with her since she just proctors the class). Overall, Professor Cales is a very nice, understanding Professor. I do recommend taking classes from her.
Loved her!
Most of my interaction was with the TA and a writing fellow I was assigned. They were wonderful. I had little interaction with Dr. Cales, but was not impressed with her choice of textbook. I was pleased with her responsiveness the one time I emailed her with a concern, and I think she does care about her students but is just busy with other things.
Awesome teacher who truly cares about you getting an education rather than just getting a degree! She will get you passionate about the arts, or at least to appreciate them. I highly recommend her class!
Its a GE class, it shouldnt be so much work. I took it online because my friend said it was easier, but she apparently had a different teacher. Theres 5 essays and 5 cultural assignments where you have to traipse around the city and find buildings that are in a certain style.
Shes such a sweet teacher! She loves what she does so her lectures are usually pretty interactive. Homework assignments are fairly easy, shes pretty open to helping you get a better grade and curves your grade :)) just make sure you do the readings and come to class on time cause she does daily tests.
This online class was so easy to follow and I never had to worry about missing assignments. I exclusively worked with my TA but he was awesome and kept in frequent contact with us. Lots of reading/quizes but the work load really wasn't bad. She gave a study guide for the tests which made them super manageable. I would recommend taking online!
If you're looking for an easy online class, this class is NOT easy, probably 2x the workload of in-person humanities and I've taken both. 25 quizzes, 3 papers, 4 architecture sightings, 3 exams, and that's not all, folks! Consider waiting a semester to see if they reduce the course load.
I thought that this course was extremely organized and there was adequate help and interaction with TA's. Depending on your TA you will do just fine in the course.
Professor Cales teaches a good class. I had little to no interest in the subject material, but by the end of the semester I looked forward to class. Grades are based on tests and essays which are not bad if you put the time into them. And the text is necessary for both.
Prof. Cales is caring and helpful. She extended deadlines when I needed extra help. However, how the online course was designed with deadlines was ROUGH. In one weekend, we had a test, a 3-page paper, 3 quizzes, 100+ pages of reading and an assignment. Overall the class expectations are very clear, but you'll have to work for it.
Lots of reading, quizzes and short essays. However, the lowest 3 quizzes and 4 essays get dropped. Super interesting to learn about the arts and humanities; I always looked forward to class. If you can handle the big chunks of reading and the assignments, you'll be fine. Tests consist of questions from past quizzes. Great lady. Recommended.
Do not take this class online. It is possibly the worst class Ive ever taken at BYU. Hundreds of pages of reading, four sections per week with a quiz at the end of each section that includes essay questions and multiple choice. This is a self directed learning class so will have no contact with the professor. 2 midterms a final, three papers
Way too much work for a 3.0 credit GE. She micromanages you and treats you like you are a kid which felt super disrespectful and belittling. Was not willing to work with me at all when I was struggling with certain parts of the class due to the descriptive violence talked about. TA's took on her better-than-the-students attitude as well.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Especially if you a just trying to fill in your GE requirements. So. Much. Reading. More reading in this class that all of my other GE classes combined (11.0 credits worth). Feels like she babies you through the whole class, as if she doesn't think you are intelegent enough to understand the homework assignments and do them.
This class was horrible, so bad in fact that I have switched to a different halfway through the semester and it has made all the difference in the world! She does not work with students at all! For example, there was a scheduled TA meeting and I have work at all times listed, and she would not work with me to help me get the credit for it some way.
I'm sure Diane Cales is awesome, but I never met her. I only met my TA. This class is all dependant on who your TA is. Tbh I didn't think I'd get an A in this class, but when I figured out how the TA graded then I did a lot better. I enjoyed this class, but man it was so much HW, way more than any GE ever.
Worst. GE. Ever. Seriously do not take this class from her unless you are a history major or something. She seems to be personally offended by the fact that not everybody cares about humanities and she takes it out on her students by micromanaging every little assignment. There are better professors at BYU for this class.
It was an online class, but she did such a good job of organizing it. She really helped me understand hard art concepts. each week on cavnas, it told you how many hours you would spend on her course work and each assignment had a time expectation like a read and response would say "text and context 50 minutes" so you knew how much to prepare.
This was completely online so I've never met Prof Cales, but she was very easy to work with the few times I did have to reach out. I got really sick on a week there was a midterm, and she extended it for me with no fuss. There were a LOT of textbook and other readings for this course, but I used the read aloud feature on my browser and it was fine
Professor Cales is a great professor! She is super willing to work with the students, and genuinely cares about them doing well. She offered several forms of extra credit throughout the semester, and there were various ways of getting the credit. She has awesome TAs as well! I had Heather as a TA and she held great reviews before the exams!
If you have to take humanities, this isn't a bad choice. My online class was TA run & you have no contact with the professor. I messaged her once and never heard back. Pray that you get a good TA! I did! If you do the readings, memorize the paintings and music, you should be good to go. There's 3 big papers & 3 tests, but its honestly not too bad.
Ive never had a more detached and unreachable professor. She introduced herself with a video at the beginning of the term and sent 2 emails the entire time. I get that it was an online class, but she solely depended on past videos, TAs and other professors short videos to teach the content. Useless professor for a useless class. Good luck
A great online option for humanities that counts for two GE requirements. No contact with the professor, but you can meet with a TA virtually and they were great. 3 easy papers and 3 exams (the final is the third exam its not comprehensive) Just spend a couple hours before the test memorizing art and you will do well! Also 30 pt extra credit option
If you have no interest in humanities or art or anything do not take this class. It starts off easy and the first exam is very easy, but the second exam was 300x harder than the first which I failed. I have no interest in this stuff and was simply taking it for the art credit, watching hours of opera videos and musicals was the worst thing ever.
I've never hated a professor so much. This is a GE credit, but she treats it like it's the most important class you'd ever take. She's not understanding in the slightest, and never responded to my messages. Don't take from this professor.
Not a great class. She gives so many assignments her TA's can't keep up. It takes weeks to get any feedback. By the time your next paper is due, you don't have feedback on your previous one. This class is nothing but busy work and the content is boring and sometimes painful. I'd avoid this class if you can. I heard IHUM201 is way better.
This was one of the worst classes I have taken. If you want 15+ assignments a week, plus extremely hard tests then this is the class for you. I regret taking this class. The professor doesn't do anything and relies heavily on her TAs. I feel bad for the TAs. If you need any accommodations for assignments she will not help you out AT ALL. BEWARE!!!!
P. Cales was really awesome as a professor. Her online class is long with a lot of slides but it stays pretty interesting with all of the participation. She loves her students and can tell when you are absent. Tests are really hard if you don't put in the time and effort to study, memorize and pay attention in class. Such a sweet professor though!
I took this class as a GE credit and it was the hardest class of my course load that semester by far. It's an "online class", but you have multiple assignments due every Wednesday and Saturday. It's not hard it's just a lot of busy work that I guarantee she never looks at. The exams are horrible and too much for a GE class, so hard and technical.
I took this online course from the SLC and I have no complaints. Professor Cales made the lectures interesting and the topics relatable. The entire week's work can be done in two hours. Lenient grader, study guides that prep you for tests. Weekly open note quizzes, 1-page essays and 3 minute presentations. Take this class if you need an easy GE.
This class is ridiculous. The course work is easy but the tests are super information heavy and you are not prepared by the busy work that is assigned. I would rather take a 400-level major final than a midterm in this class. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy general.
This has to be one of the worst classes I've taken at BYU. Avoid it at all costs! Professor Cales is extremely unavailable and distant. Her tests ask for small details from the readings, which you might have overlooked within the hundreds of pages assigned. If you're seeking a manageable GE course, stay away!
So much reading that is honestly very boring. Learning is HEAVILY reading-based. Grade depends on TA, and mine was a harsh grader on essays. TA reviews slightly help, but on exams (2 midterms, 1 final) you have to memorize "who said what" or its title (and on these questions, there are 10 options just to make it even harder for you)
Took this class at the SLC center. SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Tests were almost impossible. I got the highest exam grades in my class, and I barely scraped by with an A. Class averages on tests ranged from a 48%-68%. VERY DIFFICULT EXAMS. Lots of memorization. 4 big exams. Weekly essays and quizzes weren't graded harshly and offered a small buffer for grade
Professor Cales is one of the most unreasonable and uneducated professors I have ever had. I would consider myself a very unbothered person but when I went to talk with her regarding a grade I received, she was so unbelievable rude. She completely ruined my last month of school and I feel sick thinking about this class.
IHUM202 is a mixed bag - the workload can be heavy, but using resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook can really help. The professor is distant, but a good TA can make all the difference. Not the most engaging class, but manageable if you stay on top of it.
