Very helpful and will set aside time for her students.... Very cool teacher!!
Very helpful English teacher. I learned how to cretique my own writing very well. Thanks to Diane, i have become a very good writer. If you want a great experience in this class, take Diane Carelson.
Diane is a wonderful instructor. She is really culm and you enjoy her class. She is challenging but not hard. She makes the semester raelly fun and I really enjoyed having her as my English Instuctor
I don't even think that she knows what she's talking about when she speaks, how can she expect us to know?!? She has been titled the "Comma Queen."
By far the worst teacher I have ever had! She doesn't help you, and just refers you to the writing center. Which I was unable to go to with work and my other classes. If you want to have your self confidence and self esteem lowered than by all means she is the teacher for you.
The comment below was enetered for the wrong professor
attendance is some what necessary, but it u dont go she accepts pretty much any good excuse, and totally understands. Easy grading, our mid term and final was super easy. You get the packets at the beginning the the semester, and we practice it every day. You can just memorize it.
Love this teacher! So helpful, assignments are easy but you learn a lot, and if you fail your essay, you can revise it. good extra cred. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! im going to miss this class!
This class was pretty much a joke! All I did was just do the assignments without really trying, and got an A. I put very little effort into this class. I hated showing up because this teacher is so biased. She says she is open for discussion but you give your opinion and she cuts you down. Don't take her, the only reason to take her is the A.
Made sociology enjoyable. Very interesting and I highly recommend her
nice old lady. very helpful. easy class. if you miss pretty much will except anything for an excuse. wants to help you not fail you
She is a good teacher, and she makes class fun with random games. There is very little homework and the midterm is short and simple.
Carlson is very easy. Basically write something semi educated and you will get credit. She shows people a lot of facts that make them uncomfortable and defensive. It takes an open mind to take her class. I have also taken her intro to sociology. She lets you speak but she also will let you know if you are saying something inaccurate.GOOD TEACHERS DO
Her class was great. She's not biased in anyway.. whoever said that OBVIOUSLY missed the point of the class. It was very thought provoking and I wished she taught another class on campus. I'd take it again if I could.
Very biased; no balance. Encourages a victim mentality for minority groups rather than inspiring a sense of empowerment. She may see this as thought provoking; I see it as enabling an entitlement mind set.
She is an interesting teacher & lets everyone speak their opinion w/ criticism. You must come to class, but again cool info. Take this class w/ another difficult class & you will get an A. Do your journals, takehome midterm, final is a paper.. no other tests & no real homework.
I went into this class very excited, but as the semester went on it became nerve racking. In class she is pretty good, funny, and keeps us active, but when going to her office for one on one, it's just confusing, and she does not make clear what it is she wants. I do have an open mind but I also feel she is biased and not open to others opinions.
She's easy, but I'm still not sure if I like her. She doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed, but it's masked well because she knows her sociology. There's also a big disconnect between the readings on D2L and her class because she did not mention the readings once during the entire semester. And she's not very clear.
She is an amazing teacher. Super helpful& kind. My favorite teacher of all time. Her classes are amazing, eye-opening and wonderful to be at because you learn so much that you never knew before. I would definitely recommend taking her, she is a phenomenal teacher and the class is really interesting and fun to learn about
I thought that her class was an eye opener. She is bias but still does listen to others views. I do agree that everything over5 D2L got confusing and I know that I'm not the only one who got confused. You have to carefully read your syllabus to get everything in on time and do your best to understand. Overall though I think the class was great
very nice and helpful. always open to anything anyone has to say. warning:your workload WILL catch up with you. do not put off a single thing in this class. you will regret it. seems easy but its not. (if you slack off)
Class itself was interesting. Not much work assigned over the course of the semester, I managed to finish all that was assigned during the last week. The reading that are assigned don't clearly tie into her lectures, they're kind of just there for the sake of assigning something. Her lectures are quite intuitive, she knows her sociology well!
If you want to be bombarded to be pro gay marriage & criticized if you don't agree with it then this is the class for you. It doesn't cover too much actual Soc,it should be called a debate class. You also have no idea what kind of grade you're receiving until the end of the semester.Wouldn't recommend to a friend.
She is very knowledgable but her lectures are very boring. Her exams are take home which are nice, but make sure you give a lot of examples and write a lot for your answers. Class could have been better if she spiced up her lectures.
Diane is an awesome Professor. She is very open minded and knows her Soc really well. Her lectures are very interesting. And well, everything about sociology is interesting. I think people who don't like her or her class are people who don't like to open their minds or confront subjects about society that make them feel bad about themselves.
Nice teacher but lectures are so left slanted. Being open minded is one thing but there isn't much balance in the material.Prepare to feel brainwashed. However if youre anti white, anti rich, anti industry, pro poverty, pro victim, pro gay, you will love this class.
She's a good teacher. Informative lectures, although the subject matter is sometimes tough to be open minded to. Good class overall. Would've been nice if she had graded assignments sooner so I could've received feedback on them throughout the semester to know exactly what she's looking for & adjust my writing accordingly.
Great Professor! Makes lecture interesting and gives great examples, answers e-mails quickly, and minimal reading is required. I took the hybrid class where you listen to lectures online and do responses online. Simple layout if you do your homework there are 2 tests and a final. All essay questions but not difficult.
this teacher is the SLOWEST at getting your grades back to you. makes you read selections and post online but then they are never brought up again in class. Both midterms and final were take home. You don't have any idea what your grade is in the class because she doesn't get your work graded and returned to you until the semester is over.
Carlson is really nice and the class is SUPER easy, but she's basically a socialist. If your a conservative, you probably won't care for what she has to say. It's an easy A though.
Mrs. Carlson cares very much for her class, but her teaching methods are.....a little odd. She said she'd take attendance every day, but very rarely ever did. The homework was VERY easy, there were no real tests, midterms were given at home, and the final was take-home as well. If you don't do the homework or midterms, you will fail.
VERY left - sided teacher. I felt like I was being fed an agenda. If you're conservative, prepare yourself because you will feel brainwashed. She is nice, but she is very set in her ways. I had no idea what my grade was the entire semester and she literally waits until the deadline day to post your final grade.
Diane is a poor excuse for a teacher. She will tell you that you are flat out wrong when you answer with facts that are not what she believes in. She comes across as some kind of liberal nazi. If you take this class be prepared to feel brainwashed. This class would have been more enjoyable with someone who had a little more smarts.
I took a hybrid class with her. She's very fun and the classes were awesome: we played games, had discussions...but if you're not self-disciplined don't take this class. She doesn't grade until the last day and all the work is online so it's just hard to stay up to date on your grade. Also, she likes a lot of detail on the essays...
Super easy teacher. I never had any tests, just a few papers. She's a really chill grader. Most of the class is just about your opinion and what you think. As long as you do the work she assigns, which isn't much, you should get an A
This class was easy, and she is a nice teacher. I did not like how much she forced her opinion and beliefs onto our class. The class was interesting, but her overbearing opinions thrown into lecture killed it for me. If you're extremely liberal, this is the class for you.
She is extremely liberal and if a student states an opinion that is different than hers she will actually say "NO. THAT IS WRONG." She's terrible with grading, doesn't communicate with students, doesn't give enough time for group projects, and is not a good teacher at all. I would never recommend this professor to anybody.
Great teacher, very charismatic and helpful if you ever have a question. Keep up with the assignments and you'll be fine.
Very easy teacher, very approachable. Do the assignments and show up and you will pass. However, the material she uses to teach is very outdated, I started not wanting to go to class because I felt like everything we were learning was too obvious and boring. Read the syllabus, very important. In short, I like her but not the class.
I think she's a great teacher. Very interactive class with great thought-provoking assignments. She is quite liberal in her thinking but I think she handles conservative students quite well. She encourages you to go outside your comfort zone and she is very helpful.
I thought at first the course might be interesting to me, but after the first couple weeks I found myself just going through the motions just to pass. I’d get a little frustrated with some of the topics we went over. She almost made it seem like she wanted you see it the way she sees it. Professor Carlson is very kind but I think the course sucked
No tests, which allows students to actually focus on the interesting material and not just taking notes. I wish she would have graded things more so I would have known what my grade was... but other than that she is very sweet, a great teacher, and is all for student success!
Great lady. I loved her lectures and the class was really interactive. There are no tests, just a couple small projects and two papers in addition to the homework. She cares more about her students actually thinking about things than stressing them out with busy work. Would for sure recommend this course!
I took the online marriage and family class (SOC310) and it was a difficult class. You have a lot of reading and responding to others on d2L. There were two group projects that were a nightmare because we had to meet people we did not even know. I liked the class but there was a ton of work, more work than classes where you show up.
This is the professor you've always dreamed of having. She really knows and cares about what she teaches. She's extremely approachable, which really helps with discussion in class and office hours. Her classes will be the highlight of your week, and have meaningful material you'll actually remember 3 semesters later.
Great class! Very interesting stuff. The online course was a breeze! There are no tests at all, just two easy group activities and a paper on a book at the end of the course. Super easy AND fun. A textbook was assigned but I literally never read a page of it and I passed.
I took the hybrid class. There is a lot of homework assignments each week including long readings and journals. Class time was not used for lecture, just activities, which was frustrating because you had to watch it at home. Carlson is helpful but did not make the class interesting. Be detailed in your papers. Do your homework and you'll do fine.
Lots of time for class discussion. Attendance and participation are significant parts of the grade. Don't buy the book. Major points from group projects and term paper. Her expectations aren't very clear, but she wants details, connections and sources. Most grades are given after semester ends so you won't know how you're doing til it's over.
This professor opened my eyes to the problems in this society, if you want an easy class I don't recommend her even though she doesn't have tests. Assignments must be taken seriously and group projects SUCK. However if you want to understand racism listen and participate this class will change your life.
Her class is very interesting, but her information is very outdated. For class we either watched movies, videos, or played games. It was a fun and interesting class, but I don't feel like I really learned much at all.
Okay, so the class is probably the most liberal class I've ever taken. The topics are pretty interesting, dealing with racism, distribution of wealth, etc. However, be prepared to ONLY hear the Liberal side of things. Regurgitate the liberal information and you will get a good grade. Was hard to listen to sometimes, but focus on the overall aspect.
No test. Two papers - midterm and final. Weekly PowerPoints lectures and board discussions as HW - definitely not hard as long as you do the work. Barely used textbooks for HWs. 7 week course, very flexible in summer. Great class to learn about current world views and social problems. Everything online obvi, fast response through gmail & d2l, easyA
Not only is her online class flexible, but she is a great professor. Topics taught in class were interesting. It was my first time taking an online class and I actually kept up with the material. Its definitely not a difficult class, so I recommend taking this course.
One of my first online classes and she was super helpful with me getting started late off the wait list. There are two essays: the midterm and final which amount to ALOT of points so follow the grading rubric. Be prepared to write ALOT in the discussions and answer the question asked clearly. No tests, kind of worldly views on issues, USE PINTEREST
I really liked this class. I took the hybrid online 8 week course. It's pretty fast-paced but I like it because it forces me to pay attention. We have 2 group projects and those are meh because you have to rely on people but overall, I liked the professor and the class was super interesting!
I strongly advise against NOT taking her online class. You don't have any tests, but you will have group projects. Her grading is all over the place if you think you deserve an A expect a low low B. If you email her for assistance with group projects or feedback on your grade she can be rude in her replies and not helpful!
When I first took her Sociology 310 class, she was an easy grader. Now she's a tough grader. I really liked her a lot in sociology 310. Now I'm taking soc. 301 class, it's kind of a hard class. I really try and put a lot of effort into the discussions and she doesn't give you an A.
I took her Sociology 300 class, it was an really easy class. Now I'm in the last week of her Soc. 301 and it's so hard for me. The final is really hard. She's a tough grader and not very clear in her emails. I'm really frustrated with the final paper. I wouldn't recommend taking this class. Very hard!
I have had the worst experience in my entire time at FLC with this professor. She is incredibly unclear about what she wants, she grades extremely hard, she is insanely liberal and refuses to present or hear another argument. If you disagree with her opinion she will punish your grade. She is incredibly rude and unhelpful if you ask for help.
I couldn't agree more with the comment on 5/25/2016! The worst experience of any teacher at Folsom! I tried to present facts from a piece of American History & she shunned me ad walked off! And she is very rude and "Extremely Liberal to the point that I wanted to walk out, but stuck with it to the bitter end!"
Diane is an amazing professor who knows her field inside and out! She is willing to help students broaden their horizons while maintaining a calm classroom in touchy topics. She gives and earns respect with everyone. I was very interested all semester. She's very understandable and encouraging, let me turn in late work, helped me improve on work.
Let me clear up a few issues: There is very little work in this class, which leads some people to wrongly believe the tests will be easy. If you want a decent grade, you need to be detailed. Next, if you present evidence to disprove her ideas, do not use anecdotes; you need real scientific evidence. Finally, do not get offended by the class materia
Very poor communication in the online classes. Easy to see that the recorded lectures have not been updated in a while, very hard to figure out exactly what is expected on group projects. This class leans extremely heavily to the left, if you disagree or offer a conflicting view you will receive a lesser grade. No idea of your grade until last day.
I'm a good student but didn't enjoy her class. What she wanted was unclear even with a rubric. Outdated lectures and "extra credit" was providing evidence of what was out of date and providing new data. Came across as laziness to me. Nonetheless, do the work, do the reading, just do things how she wants and you can do it. Interesting subject. Meh.
Poor communication. When asking her a question 9/10 times she just tells you to look at the syllabus and when you cant find it she tells you to look harder. Never answered my question clearly about other things that were not on the syllabus. Unclear on her assignments and it is also very vague on what you needs to be written.
LOTS of homework. And a very tough grader. She expects way to much for an intro to sociology class. Expects you to already be an expert on the class. Lectures were also a waste of time, we would just play games that didn't relate much to the homework assignments. Wouldn't recommend this prof.
Probably one of the worst professors I've had at the college. Extremely unclear on her grading rubric, and she expects you to be an expert in the class even though it's intro soc! And don't even get me started on if you don't agree with her views, she will actually mark you down and give you a worse grade. Lectures from 2008 for online class!
Diane is a GREAT professor. Took her SOC300 hybrid class, meeting times are necessary for attendance points. Weekly discussions can become tedious, but if you put in the work and ask questions, you will pass.
Diane is a fantastic Sociology professor. My only problem with this class is lack of new material (compared to SOC 300 class - almost the same textbook is used) an the reliance on group projects (1 main project broken down into 4 presentations) for 25% of your grade.
Diane is a very empathetic professor. Very easy to work with if you need more understanding, she appreciates student effort. This was an interesting class. Weekly discussion posts.
Solid class. Weekly discussions, 3 drop (which helps) - two group projects which take a lot of work to get a decent grade. I enjoyed the material presented in this class.
Weekly, there is not a huge hw load, but she is a very tough grader, and it is not easy to get a perfect score. Also, there is two online group projects that are rather stressful. It can be hard to get in touch with people you have never met before. The last group project is not explained well enough. Its doable, but it is not an easy a.
She is a really nice and caring professor but I find her to be a bit unorganized and confusing with her syllabus. There were two group projects and Im sure you can imagine how hard it is to do group projects online with people you don't know/who don't respond. She grades really hard and her discussion board posts required a lot of effort.
TAKE THIS CLASS if you want something new and exciting! A lot of political/social/ethical problems are covered, and Diane was welcoming and respectful of different perspectives. She went above and beyond for our class, putting in her extra time and materials. She listens to your concerns and is very helpful. Group projects are SO important.
I learned a lot and felt the required assignments were good. However, she takes a while to grade and there is no feedback on why you receive the grade you did. Also, at the end (for online class) she has you give her the amount of comments you did on online voicethread. This was in the syllabus, but not clear. I was honest and got half the points.
This class is easy if you do well in the discussions. She's hard to get a good grade from, even is you do a great job. She wrote nasty comments to me when disagreed with the material in a discussion that asked my opinion specifically. Her lectures/material are just pure lies about society that push a disturbing agenda on students.
If you're thinking of taking her for SOC300 or SOC301 please take my advice and just DONT worst teacher at FLC and doesn't make anything clear. Only thing she cares about is her made up discussion responses she requires WEEKLY and thats the only thing in the grade book. Whatever we do in class is not applied ANYWHERE else. Group project fora month
I enjoyed Professor Carlson. Discussion responses due every Friday and one essay for the final. I found the topics interesting, but some stats seemed outdated. She is kind of tough on grading, but if you study the grade rubrics, you'll do well in the class! Overall, good class if you put the effort
Don't take her-"Rude". She tells you to pick a topic, like the Wizard of OZ. I was about to write about the authors reason-being economics of hard times of the 1890's. But she would not allow the real reason to be written. I had to write what she wanted. She said don't believe in history books, which I showed her proof of & then shunned me. Rude!
She is an amazing teacher! She inspired me to change my major to sociology and she is someone that I keep in contact with, to ask all of my sociology related questions. She is incredibly understanding and will accept late work if you have a valid reason. It is easy to get an A in her class if you do the readings! (and no tests!!)
I LOVED Professor Carlson. I took the hybrid in 2106 and in-class was actually enjoyable! We'd play very creative games to help us understand society, watched fascinating videos. There's a bit of reading and writing but the subject matter is fascinating so I didn't mind. She cares about students who put the effort. Don't be an entitled slacker!
If you're good with Sociology and writing, you'll do great in this class! She is a tough grader sometimes. I did not like having a group project in an online class, but it was pretty easy. As long as you do the weekly discussion boards and comment on voicethreads, I'm sure you can get an A.
The Who semester she was pushing to get everyone to take her race bating 310 course. She grades based on opinions and not factual evidence. Lastly her slides and information is from before 2008, the topics discussed in this class change constantly so having ten year old information about sociology is counter intuitive. For a class about inequality
Reading comprehension and time management a plus to get through this class! Well structured, and clear rubric for discussions! Easy A if you actually read and cite the material to show you have read and understood what is going on. She was quick at responding to questions, great at providing feedback and a more than fair grader! I would recommend!
Diane really cares about her subject, and she'll often challenge your beliefs. It's clear that some of her students don't enjoy that feeling, but her class was so interesting. Don't take her class if you don't really want to learn about the subject, because if you don't go in with a receptive mind, you're not gonna get anything out of it anyway.
Great lectures, but because the only "homework" you're graded on are discussion posts/responses, which are graded harshly, you have to make sure they're perfect. Light note-taking is recommended because it will help you write your final synthesis. There are two group projects (worth a lot of points), so make sure your group has good communication.
Professor Carlson is one of the best Sociology teachers I've ever had. She inspired me of how great I was as a person and see's every one's true potential. Her discussion boards are great and grades very easy and not harsh. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to take Sociology and even that for their major. Homework is very easy as well.
Taken during Fall 2020, so online and asynchronous due to Covid. This class wasn't for my major and was taken due to general interest, but I really enjoyed it. She's very responsive and understanding and gives great feedback. If you try you'll do fine - there's a weekly discussion response and that's it. It's about having meaningful discussions.
I took her for social racial inequality and she did a great job tying in current events and the historical basis of it. As long as you are thoughtful in your discussion responses, this class is an easy A. The hardest part of it online is doing the final group project, just take initiative to communicate with group members and you should be fine.
Wow, what an amazing person! This class had tons of discussion posts and I spent a lot of time on each, but Diane was such a great professor! She gave feedback on essays (not always tho) and was very personable. If you need help, she will help. Had few but good conversations with her, and I learned so much from this class. Great intro to sociology!
I love professor Carlson, she is one of the best professors I've ever had. I took her twice for Sociology 300 and Sociology 321. She is amazing. She is caring and gives great feedback on homework assignments. She is so great that I plan to major in Sociology because of her. Her classes are very easy and office hours are the best!
Professor Carlson is quite the hoot! She is very kind and understanding! All assignments are pretty manageable and the finals are very easy!
The assignments for this class are mostly weekly discussion posts, a midterm project, and a final project. The weekly discussion posts don't take very long once you figure out what the Prof is looking for in them. You are required to watch and comment on weekly lectures (about an hour) and look at module info for discussion posts. Solid class
You can do well in this class as long as you keep up with the workload. There is quite a lot to get done in each module so start it earlier than later. It was a bit hard to understand the prompts that Carlson gave a lot of the time so be prepared to spend some time on the projects. They offered in person office hours outside which was nice.
If you can find another professor highly recommend doing that. They are very politically charged in terms of each lecture video. Lack of clear instructions very vague. Little to no instruction just pushes out prompts. Also you grade yourself each assignment... unprofessional. Lack of well rounded material. Overall easy A but lack of actual teaching
By far, the best professor I have ever had! Diane is super understanding and casual so I feel comfortable in the class. The class was filled with fun activities and projects. Diane is not only a great teacher, but a good friend and is super fun to talk to and engage with. Definitely recommend taking classes from her!
Love Diane- super easy and chill.
Carlson is so nice and chill. She made sure to always offer help and resources to support the students. The class was interesting and I would recommend!
LOVED this class/professor. Easy class, doesn't use a point system so as long as she sees effort, you'll pass. No homework, quizzes, tests except for one weekly reading and notes. Class is discussion based and she is super lenient with grading/work. One of the only teachers that I feel like actually cares about the success of her students.
Kind soul.
Overall good professor. Graded on discussions and participation, there were no quizzes or tests. If you put in the effort to meet all the requirements, you will do well, but doing the discussions is kind of tedious.
I didn't enjoy this class and contemplated dropping nearly every week. That said, I completed the course, better than expected. I believe Prof. Carlson cares about the future of her students. She gives a lot of readings and discussions are major and in depth. There are 2 complicated presentations. It is a lot. However, if you try, you will pass.
So far, had good experience with them. Their class has many discussion board posts weekly and different readings. There were also weekly lectures they gave where students have to comment somewhere in it.
prof carlson is a great teacher. she's kind to her students when they ask questions. one thing i didn't like was the amount of reading and self-assessments. those were heavy, but nothing too hard. though i wouldn't take it again bc of the self-assessments, she's a good teacher genuinely. if you're honest with her, she's honest with you
Ever since I read the syllabus, I have been nothing but confused. This Professor is truly incapable of creating simple and straightforward assignment descriptions. SO unbelievably long and wordy. Massive weekly discussions. Only worth 10pts. WAY too much work for one 10pt assignment and extremely repetitive. The discussions were the truly worst.
I took Professor Diane back in Spring of 2024 and thought I already did a review for her. I really appreciated her including her humor in her lectures, she was hilarious! There are a few major projects but Professor Diane makes herself available to answer questions. I would totally take one of her classes again!
It is not an easy class, but if u keep up with the workload, then it will be fine. I never did that and ended up struggling on the projects and discussions.
This is quite literally the easiest class you can take. Is it a lot of reading and writing? sure but she is very easy going and smart. she gives good feedback and will work with you if you're missing work. You will learn at such a breeze of a pace its the most easy A i've ever gotten.
Professor Carlson is a kind and understanding instructor. While the workload can be heavy at times, the assignments are manageable if you stay on top of them. I found unstuckstudy really helpful for study prep alongside the course materials. Overall, it's a solid class worth taking.
Professor Carlson gives great lectures, very thorough and in depth. Lots of reading/ watching videos throughout the week. If you participate in the class and make sure you set aside time for her class, you will have no problem passing. Grading is fair. She is also VERY caring. I would definitely take her class again.
She is a very kind and caring professor. There is a lot of repetition in the assignments which makes the class seem very boring. It is the same thing every week- read the material, post on the discussion, and then rate your performance. It is easy to manage, but not very engaging. She is politically charged, which can be uncomfortable at times.
Really repetitive coursework with some nitpicky requirements but not too bad. It's obvious they care and are passionate about the subject. You're going to have to manage your own time well (especially if you're taking other classes) as it's a lot of reading/writing but it's doable.
