GREAT TEACHER! Interesting class, cares about students. Good grading systems. Makes class interesting. Take her for your TBIS!
Alright, you'd think 'Appeal of Fantasy' would be a great class, but Crotty makes me want to stab myself in the eyes. She's uninteresting and has that fake-enthusiasm feeling about EVERYTHING. I'll probably get an A, but only if I make it the next month and a half without killing myself from boredom
Fun class, but I got sick half way through. Not too much work, just be prepared to write papers. Nice woman, picked interesting class topic. Over all great.
Very easy to get along with. Requires a lot of work but it's useful.
Gets a little bit boring at times and has a few too many busy work assignments but other than that is a great prof. who is energetic and enthusistic about teaching. I would definitely suggest her to anybody!

Great Professor, interesting class subject, reading content great. You have to write quite a few papers, but the subject matter is very interesting. Thought provoking conversation on texts, overall a great class and professor, highly recommended!
Awesome class. She knew when we were getting sick of class and let us go a few times. Assignments are useful and she allows you to make you grade on papers higher through corrections.

I love this professor. She is amazing! She really cares about her students and her ideas are so interesting and fun. She still helps me now with papers I'm writing even though I do not have her for class. Everyone should take a class with her.
Great Prof! Moderate work - but easy enough to accomplish :) She makes class interesting and has quirky stories and new stuff to share. I would recommened for anyone - even if you dislike English, you will like her!
Diane is a sweetheart of a teacher. She is a tough grader though. Be forewarned: you'll have a different perspective of yourself as a writer after her class.
She is a very cool teacher. Very clear when she teaches. Also you can relate well to her if you are a Lord of the Rings fan or a Harry Potter.

Diane Crotty is a great professor! She really does care about her students and wants you to succeed. Go to class and pay attention and you should get no less than an A. Easy credit class.
She's a very nice lady and I definitely recommend her for WBIS if you like fantasy. She's a huge Harry Potter fan and you will learn that in her class. She will very much take time for you if you want help and to succeed in her class. At times she can get off topic but she's pretty funny.

She made me HATE writing. If you aren't good at it going into the class... you will learn nothing from her and won't be able to make any improvements.
Let me start by saying I took this class over interim. There were so many books crammed into the class that I literally was doing nothing but reading after work until bed. Diane was extremely nice and fun to be around but don't take this class over interim if you have a job. If taken during the semester it would have been more doable. Otherwise, A+
Professor Crotty is so much fun as a teacher! She's super open to any interpretations anyone has about whatever we're reading. She's got a great personality and doesn't grade hard at all. Take her if you get the chance!
She is by far a favorite! I dread writing in general but her assignments were manageable and she is a very easy person to contact with any question. She is open to all opinions. If you like fantasy, I would definitely recommend her. Such an interesting class!
This teacher is for sure my favorite thus far. I am taking her for another class as well. As long as you participate you have a for sure A.

I was not interested in any fantasy books prior to this class but Diane really makes it interesting and fun for everyone! I enjoyed her assignments even though at times they were challenging and made you think differently. On the first drat of class she brought a wand from HP and I thought that was funny, she is really enthusiastic about teaching!
Fun professor and really enjoyed her. The teaching style is fun. There are minimal essays but the ones we do write are longer and require lots of work and editing.
I hated going to this class! She gives out what seems like a million small write ups worth very little points, but that take FOREVER! She is a tough grader and also makes you feel inadequate in your paper writing. I would recommend taking ANY other professor!
Diane Crotty is the best teacher ever! She is so lively and actually teaches too. She is extremely passionate and will talk to you about whatever! She definitly knows what she is talking bout. However, she grades slightly on the harder side, but really tries to help you!! TAKE HER!
One of the best professors ever. This was one of the few classes I couldn't wait for each week and it was even a 3 hour class! She is a fun teacher who really is there to teach and good at it to boot! Young Adult literature was the best class I ever took at UWO.
Diane is a great teacher she takes a lot of time time to help you specifically if you go to her for help. She is passionate about her teaching and really encourages you to try your best! Will take her again if I have the chance.

Very nice and open to ideas. Very willing to help you if you ask for it. Extremely enthusiastic about fantasy!! She comes off and is religious, but not overbearing with it at all. Take the class with her if you can!
I loved Diane's class. She is such a lovely woman to talk to and was always interested in what books I brought to class as I am an avid reader. I am excited to take her YA Lit class in the fall. Take her if you get the chance! It's definitely worth it!
She was seriously such a sweet professor. She's extremely genuine and you can tell she enjoys to help and teach students, and that she WANTS to be there. She will definitely help you with anything you need! I would definitely take another class with her again!
She's such a sweet professor, I loved her class. It wasn't even something I was really interested in before hand, but she definitely made things more fun and interesting. She's a very genuine person and always willing to help her students however she can. I would definitely recommend her class to other people.
If you aren't an expert on the Bible, Harry Potter, And The Lord of The Rings you won't understand what she is talking about. She pushes assignments as much as she pushes religion into the classroom. Also hands out about a novel a week with papers and small assignments per book. Overall very unhappy with the class.
Diane is one of the nicest ladies I have ever known. She holds conferences the first couple weeks of her WBIS class to meet students and see how they are adjusting. She is so sweet and genuine. Her class isn't easy but if you are a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings nerd like I am, you will love her classes. I would take this class again if I could.
She is an extremely nice and energetic woman who has a clear passion for what she does. Though she assigns a number of papers most of them are only 1-5 pages. She can be a little tough on grading, but only to push you. If you receive a D or F on any paper and go to her office hours she will raise your grade to a C. Overall, excellent professor.
No test at all just pop quizzes on the readings. You wont have to buy all the books because most of them are online. She's a nice lady but she is unorganized and doesn't post grades on d2l. You'll have to write about 6 papers and you'll have a midterm. Not a hard grader just make sure you know what you're talking about.
She is very nice but, she is an extremely hard grader on papers. I don't think I have ever gotten so many bad grades on papers. She had some projects which were not bad and the quizzes on the readings were usually not hard either. The mid term was difficult. Sometimes, she expects you to read too much in a week. I think attendance is required.
Diane is a nice lady, but she is such a hard grader. Thinks that her class is your only class. Does not follow the syllabus and will assign a paper that isn't on the syllabus two days before its due. Extremely unorganized. Boring lectures if she even lectures. Pointless. Waste of time, you're better off taking something else.
Definitely not a bad professor and, at least in this class, an extremely laid back and easy grader. The only exception were her reading quizzes, which were either 0 or 100, which ended up hurting my grade. Criteria for assignments could be unclear at times, but she made up for it with easy grading. Safe to take for sure!
Very nice professor but, really hard grader. She definitely makes you work for it. She will let you revise papers but to get a better grade they have to be to her exact standard.
She's a great person, but not the best teacher. Very hard grader for your papers and she doesn't give you instructions for them. I received a C for each of my papers and she said they were written well. Mid-term was the hardest thing I've taken and it did not pertain to the lecture at all, or what she said would be on there and final is the same.
Professor Crotty is a sweet lady,but a tough grader and if it's not done her way it's wrong. I would avoid taking this professor at all costs!
Professor Crotty is such a sweet and awesome person! She's easy to get along with. However, as a teacher she is very close minded about her grading. If a paper doesn't go her way, you'll receive a bad grade. There is a midterm and final, which were pointless in my opinion. If you are not a strong writer, do not take her class.
She is a tough grader however, there is a lot less papers than the other WBIS classes, and she gives good feedback to help improve your essays throughout the semester.
At some times I felt like she was unfair with grading, but she truly just wants you to become a better writer. She involves the class in all of her lectures which really makes them better! I would recommend her for your first writing class!
idk why she has such a good rating. if you skip class you get points take off your papers which she grades extremely hard to begin with. she barely gives you guidance with assignments and a lot of busy work assignments also which take up a lot of time. if you are not in love with harry potter you will have a hard time. nice lady but difficult prof
She seems nice at first, but is a crazy tough grader, and leaves rude comments on your paper. I would not recommend her. If you have a chance to take someone else, do it.
She's a good professor, and a hard grader. You'll read 5 books and multiple short stories/poems. The papers are a hit or miss; you'll either do great or poorly. She's a little all over the place in lecture, but you can tell she loves literature and wants her students to learn and be better writers and readers.
She is very passionate with her studies and courses, but ALWAYS gets sidetracked and off topic. Horrible with time management and getting grades back to you in a timely manner. Her grading system is very unclear and difficult to understand.
Always failed my on my paper and even when given the option to redo them and reviewed final paper with her she still never gave a grade over a C- after all this extra work
Diane can seem a little kooky at first, but once you get used to her she is a good teacher. She is a very sweet lady with lots of personal stories and a strong love for words/ grammar. Sometimes these stories and love can get in the way of class though. If you don't enjoy Harry Potter or lack in paper writing skills I don't recommend this course.
Very passionate about English and has lots of personal stories - these are fun but waste time in the class and get the whole class off topic. She is a tough grader, all of my papers were C's, even though I went to other resources for help. Attendance in mandatory - you get three skips before points are dropped. Sucks at responding to emails.
Very unclear grading. Never on topic in class. Always talks about how amazing she is and how we don't deserve As like her. I have always gotten As in english throughout high school and with Crotty received all Cs. Honestly worst english teacher Ive ever had. Do not recommend.
She is a very good professor. Get ready to feel like you are being taught by your mom or grandma- she loves to tell personal stories!! She is a very fair grader and if you pay attention in class and to the syllabus, you will get an A. She offers re-writes for papers so that you can improve your grade. Loves Harry Potter, Hunger Games, LOTR.

Diane is a GREAT person. Although she does grade tough, she only does it because she wants you to become a better student. I was very skeptical of her at first, especially with my first paper being graded a C. You have to work hard for a good grade and she makes that very clear. Overall, good person, but tough professor.
Diane is such a sweet lady but is the toughest grader I have ever had. Would not take her for a class again but would visit her in her office hours to talk because she is very caring and nice.

Overall she's a great teacher, however, she knows that she is a good writer and will continually tell you so. As long as you kiss her ass you'll do fine. She loves Women's, Native American, and African American rights... so write your papers about that.
Diane is a great person. That doesn't necessarily mean that she is a great professor. She normally does 3 papers for her class but she decided to rush them and cram in a fourth paper. She doesn't teach you how to actually write the papers, but she grades them like we're graduate school English majors. Proceed with caution.
Diane is a very caring person, but not a good professor. She overlaps assignments and papers and it's very confusing to know what is due and when. You write 4 big papers, but there are several other smaller writing assignments. Oh and if she says you have "work time", you can count on her talking for more than half of it.
Diane is a very, very awesome teacher! She made the interim class super fun and engaging. Yeah, it's an English class you have to read and write papers for, but they are super easy literary analysis papers! She helped with any questions people had and even brought in treats the last few days of class. She has interesting stories she tells too!
Since the class went online, I have never wanted to drop a class more than I do now. Professor Crotty was very vague on everything and the class mainly had no idea what to do most of the time. When we emailed her questions she straight up told us to stop asking "obvious questions" when it was on topics that everyone was confused on.
Highly recommend not taking Crottys class. She overlaps assignments and her schedule is hard to follow. She sends unnecessary emails bashing us even when were already stressed out about being online. She is a tough grader and gets mad if you dont follow all of her suggestions for your papers :) u also dont know ur grade til end of semester��
Professor Crotty is a sweet woman, and keeps things honest with you. However, when explaining assignments and requirements for papers, Crotty is incredibly vague and expects you to know based off the syllabus. It's worth noting that I took this class in the Covid-19 online session, but even when we were in person, it was just a confusing class...
Professor Diane is not good at making things clear. It is hard to keep up with what is due and when. She goes on tangents and often gets off of topic easily. She sent out multiple rude, aggressive emails to my class. One mentioned that she would not mind failing people.
Please save yourself and do not take Professor Crotty!! She has sent out so many rude and embarrassing emails to our class. She will also say that she enjoyed your paper and still give you a D- . Worst class I had this year.
I loved Diane as a person, she was nice and caring and IMO went out of her way to actually connect to her students on a personal level. But, as a professor, I would never take her class again. She's a very hard grader and and makes you work for your grade. It was a fun class, but the papers were extremely extensive and graded hard.
Professor Crotty in my opinion was not as bad as some people are making her sound. She is overall a nice person! If you do not understand something in her class, ask her or you won't get it. She's a tough grader, but once you understand how she grades and what she is looking for you will be okay! Stay on her good side and get your work done.
Prof Crotty is a really nice professor but she is a very hard teacher for a freshman writing class. I feel like this class was more about analyzing and thinking deeper about a book rather than teaching about writing. When asked writing questions or for help, she gives you very vague answers that don't really answer anything.
Professor Crotty was a nice lady. Sometimes she could be very confusing on what her criteria was for an assignment, but overall she seemed to care about her students. Prepare for lots of reading, as we had 7-10 books to read throughout the semester. A lot of group projects, but she is an easy grader if you do all the work.
Professor Crotty is nice, but she is EXTREMELY VAGUE. Yes, this is a writing course but there are essays every 2 days. In addition, you wont see your final grade until the end of the semester. She expects freshman students to have senior level essays. If your taking this class, I feel sorry for you and i send my condolences to you.
I have a literal learning disorder in writing. I would tell her this and it seemed like it went one ear out the other. I took time to meet with her out side of class and have conversations with her and it was still very hard. I cried a lot over this class.
She was a nice professor and there was nothing wrong with her specifically, but she was very confusing. The information she posted on Canvas wouldn't always be the same as she told us personally. The papers she assigned us were also very hard to get done properly as she would never really tell us what needed to be done.
Professor Crotty seems like a nice person. However, she proceeded to gaslight me about my essay topic, which I was very clear about, and then decided to reject my paper because it didn't fall into line of what she wanted it to be. Her instructions have been very unclear and asking for clarity has not helped. I pray for anyone who has her.
She seems nice at first. However, shes an incredibly difficult grader and it makes her class impossible bc she is too vague with directions. She'll have something posted on canvas with instructions and then dock u points because she expects u to do the opposite of what she has posted and then refuse to let u redo it because it's “too much work”
I get that she's old. I'm sure 30 years ago she was a good professor but this is not the case anymore. Outside of my personal dislike for her character and personality, she is unable to keep up in today's classroom settings. Her directions are unclear and often unreasonable, like posting multiple assignments at once but only notifying you of one.
