Class is tight...asians are cool...fujino seems to love to rally with the women...but overall a good prof...good to argue with
She is awesome! Grades hard, but it doesn't matter cause you learn so much and the assignments aren't that hard. I was the only white person in the class and I loved it
Fujino is kick ass!...all her topics are interesting i reccomend all you other students looking this up to take any fujino class cuz they all rock!...one of the reasons why going to UCSB rocks
Fujino is the bomb! Not only does she encourage reading and such, but she always tries to pull some real life experience into the mix. She's definitely an inspiration to the As Am department and one I recommend!
she is not a bad teacher..she is very enthusiastic on the topics she is teaching..the grades however depend on your ta..and if you get alan segui..he grades harshly
her lectures are broad and don't always touch on the reading-she writes her lectures on the overhead instead of typing them and it is so hard to get the notes. my ta alan segui sucks too-he ta's for lots of asam classes-watch out!! he is a big pompous ass
Her lectures are very interesting. She's very specific on what she wants for the midterm, final, and papers. I'd highly recommend taking this class with her.
A lot of reading but I learned a lot. Takes a fair amount of effort if you want anything near an A.
awesome, just awesome!
Fujino is pretty easy if you just read all the readings assigned (there's a lot), but her testes are mainly on the readings. If you have Allan S. as a T.A just pay attention to what he wants and expects for the testes and papers. Overall, a great class!
Lots of reading! The tests are hard, but your grade depends mostly on your TA (Believe Alan Segui when he warns you that he is a tough grader!) Her lectures are interesting, but she is too biased for me to appreciate her.
She's biased. It's hard to read her notes. Your grade really depends on which TA you get.
too much reading, most ppl. don't read anyways, but it's not bad, some things are interesting, lecture is not too great. Make sure you get a nice TA, your entire grade depends on them ONLY. don't need to get the new reader, get it from old students.
she is an awesome professor and this class was wonderful.
Seems like deep down, she's a feminist, and sometimes, she lets it out...
Fujino is a great lecturer - very informative and clear although she needs to discover the joy of Powerpoint! She teaches some interesting concepts. Take the class P/F if it's not your major-you'll learn a lot more if you're not obsessing about how everything is graded (b/c it's extremely specific
Possibly one of the most boring classes I have taken. All she does is repeat herself every lecture. I swear she says the same thing everytime. Way too much reading and the grading is BS.
I can't stay awake! unless you are an asian american major or something like that... you shouldn't take this class.
Her lectures are fun, but don't assume the few notes she jots down on the overhead is enough. You could ace the class if you do ALL her readings (there's TONS!!!) and attend lecture to see what her focus is. Overall, an interesting class. Take it PassNoPass if its just for GE req.
the only good thing about her class is that it's easy. i didn't learn a thing in this class, and, in retrospect, i wish i had just skipped every lecture, becuase i would've done well without it. she's lame, repetetive, and a ****. my TA was cool, though.
the lectures provide interesting new views on things. she really made me think about things but she assigns an incredibly unreasonably amount of reading.. the reader is 600 pages! not to mention she makes you GUESS whats going to be on the midterm. paul kang is a cool TA though
I like her! She is a fun teacher. I also like her lectures a lot. The only thing bad about the class is that there is a ton of reading! In order to ace the midterm, you would have to read almost all of the reader (600 pages) But overall, i am learning a lot in her class
She is a great professor, explains things so well and the lectures are so much fun.
I liked the class a lot, but I worked my butt off to get an A. I basically ended up reading ALL the material in the reader, but that only took me like 2 nights to read through it all. Anyways, keep up with the class reading and you can get an A.
Her lectures are okay.. it's kind of hard to follow b/c she uses an overhead so it's hard to follow her notes, but if you read than u should be ok.. there's a massive amount of reading though which is not so hot. Interesting class though and great lecturer.
The topic was not my favorite, but her lectures are very clear and to the point. Her lively personality and the films help to make it more interesting as well.
she reads way too much into her idea of society based gender relations and race. she also seems like she's making things up to fit her schema of thinking. the class has a lot of repetative reading, and the sections seemed useless too. paul's really good, michelle's decent, and yandong isn't helpful.
She is a good teacher with lectures that are clear and understandable that are semi boring. She expects a lot of reading(huge reader) but most of the reading is very repetitive. Getting a good TA will make the class easier, go with Paul Kang.
fujino is one of the stupidest teahcers i've had. she has the mental capacity of a fiftenn year-old girl, with opinions on life and gender to match. but, the class was easy. skip the lectures and the reading, and go to section, especially if you have this ta named michelle. she's a total babe.
a lot of readings and the tests are ridiculuously cumbersome. the TAs are also hard graders.
FUJINO WAS A GOOD TEACHER AND SHE WASN'T BAD TOO LOOK AT EITHER. =)
you need to pay close attention to understand the points/concepts she is trying to stress. HAHA all these people saying you need to read all the readings (600 pages), that's not true. Read a few articles and grasp the concepts that coincide with lecture. I did half the readings and got A's, and trust me if i can do it, you can cuz i'm not smart!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! she engages you in conversation, grabs your interests and encourages class participation to grasp concepts. you struggle a little with the concepts but she is more than willing to help you out to clarify. such an empowering class and very very educational. i could not have asked for better asian am classes!
Fujino is one of the best professors at UCSB. She is so smart and I learn so much from her. If you don't like to think then don't take her classes and don't waste her time.
her lectures are intersting, but it can sometimes be boring. she's a funny person, and some of the conversations we have in class are really interesting. she's extremely helpful if you go to office hours.
Organized lectures, though she really hasn't said anything but common knowlege. Slides not posted but going to class almost worthless. I had an AWESOME TA who really engaged me. Fujino succeeds in getting participation from large lecture. Small but has authority.
This class is pretty interesting, more than I thought it would be. Midterms/Finals are written response, but if you do the reading and pay attention it's not that hard. TA really helped out because she gave us "cliff notes" for the readings. Professor engages in class discussion so you probably won't fall asleep.
this teacher reads way too much into her material. some baseball bat representing a **** and balls? some guy hitting on her because she was a woman? i don't buy it and sometimes, it gets ridiculous listening to the other people kiss her ass.
wayyy too much reading assigned every week. midterm questions were so broad that it was hard to address even though i did study for it. lectures were pretty interesting but unorganized at times. get charlene as a TA if you plan to enroll in this class. she is the nicest and easiest.
Very interesting class, though it seemed more focused on gender relations rather than the asian aspect of gender relations. and many of the stories she read into did seem a little far fetched, i didn't buy most of them either. over all an interesting class, get a good TA and be prepared to read a lot
this was an interesting class. alot of reading to do. but you only have to write one paper (7-8) pages. its pretty easy to pass the class.
lots of reading, but if you do it and go to lecture the tests are easy.
This class is such bull****!!!!Apparently there is a huge conspiracy in the US government to opress all other countries in order for them to immigrate and provide cheap labor...yeah. And there are some really interesting topics on hardcore feminism as well....fun stuff.
I recommend this to soph., lotz of reading, but very intersting topics. and if u do it and attend lecture, grade is not tough. When doing paper, she's very helpful. sessions can be boring, but must attend it if ur TA is anal. It is a great intr course to ASAm study, and she's great to talk to. Take this course kuz it fulfills SO many GEs!!! haha

Diane Fujino is an AMAZING person all around. In regards to her teaching, she is so passionate...you learn to LOVE the subject. She is so sweet and cute, you'll never want to miss class. I took her AS AM 171GG class over summer and it was my fave! Not hard and very interesting. I plan to take more classes with her through out my college years.
Overall, the class is very interesting. Dr. Fujino is very knowledgeable in her area. Although at time she tends to read too much into her own material and over-analyze certain situations, I'd highly recommend this class to anyone. Besides, it fills so many GE's...
Taking this class means regurgitating feminist theory and race theory, over and over and over again. The veracity of the reading is suspect. Best part of the course was actually talking about *shock* ASAM gender relations, as opposed to how males and whites suck. Fujino is personally nice, but this class was a severe dissapointment.
fujino is a cute little woman who enjoys what she teaches and is extremely passionate topics. concepts are very interesting but become a little dull because she gets repetitive. must have time to read because you have about 400pgs to read. i have to admit that i fell asleep on her a couple of times.

This woman seriously does not need to be a teacher. Even at the best of times, her research is suspect at best, and she has no issue using methods of indoctrination that she preaches against in class. A lot of her class was spent explaining why white males were the source of all the problems in the world. Crazy reading, midterms, and lectures. If your opionion differs from hers, you are not going to do well in the class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very passionate, interesting and fun. She is a great professor who can keep you captivated throughout lecture, I highly recommend it. However, she assigns enough reading to surpass all the other classes you're taking... combined. MAJOR feminist, but what else do you expect from a class by this name. Emphasis on reader rather than textbook.
Don't buy the textbook, just the reader, you'll need it. Interesting lectures, major feminist, but very clear on topics. TA's grade, M. Kwon is great. One 8 page essay really not hard, but DON'T procrastinate. TONS of reading but just be selective, choose only the readings that cover the broader topic. Recommended. :)
Nice, fun-loving teacher who enjoys her job.You have one 8-pg. paper, easy to do but a lot of work, def. interview parents.NEED reader (u have to read the WHOLE thing, theres one small book). Go to section. Grading is a joke, dnt believe its extremely fair, felt like i worked hard but didnt get the grade i deserved. Talk to TA and teacher it helps!
Fujino is also so perky and enthusiastic when it comes to lecturing from her powerpoints. She's really down to earth and easy going. No textbooks are required but the reader is a MUST. To do well, you would need the Reader. I found majority of the topics interesting and the TAs/sections are very helpful. I highly recommend this class!
She's very enthusiastic and perky in her lectures. You can tell she's very passionate about the topic. The tests are pretty easy you really just regurgitate or elaborate what she says in class which you probably will do in discussion (depending on your TA). However it's a crap-load of reading from the reader. I suggest not buying the book.
If you read the reader you'll pass the class. She looks for lots of analysis and critical thinking in the tests but overall they're pretty easy. It's an easy class and really interesting. Sections help a lot. Fujino is very into the topic and lectures well. Recommend taking the class.
I found lectures pretty interesting. If you're able to regurgitate her ideas onto the tests, you'll do fine. Sections are very helpful to clarify ideas brought up in lecture. Don't bother with the textbook, but the readings are mandatory. Lectures simply go over readings.
Interesting, fun teacher. She believes in what she's doing, and is open to discuss how the class can be changed (for our class, we reduced the reading load). Readings mostly come from the reader, and she requires an internship as a part of the grade.
ASAM 8 - Sexuality and Gender, will definitely be one of my favorite classes when I look back at my years at UCSB. The classes topics dealt from construction of gender, to the hardships men and women in the face of racism, sexism, and gender ideologies. The class had a lot of reading, but since I found it to be extremely interesting I read them all.
Fujino is an interesting character. The first part of the class is excruciating because of its broadness (doesn't really touch base on Asian-American aspect until weeks into course). The last few weeks were finally focused on Asian-American aspect. Go to lectures to fully understand the concepts you need to know for midterm and final.
What a horrible professor. She was unclear about what the expectations were for the papers and for the essays on the test. She expected us to know exactly what she wanted. Her TA's did the best that they could but she gave horrible instructions to them. The TA's didn't even know what she wanted. Her class was really confusing. Don't take it
What a horrible professor. The information she presented was boring and was inaccurate or could have been easily argued inaccurate. I CAN"T BELIEVE THEY MADE HER DEPARTMENT CHAIR. They has to be someone else who can adequately run the Asian American Department
Absolutely loved this class. If you're at all interested in gender/sexuality/racism in history and the world today, TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof Fujino is very engaging and the readings were fairly interesting. Took it for the ethnicity requirement and walked away with a different outlook on the world. Loved it and loved her. Would take again.
If you're at all interested in gender and sexuality then take this class! I took it for the ethnicity requirement and I am so glad I did. Prof. Fujino is very clear from what she expects of you and is very nice and approachable. The readings are posted on gauchospace and you should at least skim them for the midterm and final. Recommended!!
Ok teacher. Decent class, except had high expectations for the midterm and final. There is also a big paper, even though the class doesn't give you writing credit. Lots of reading. Make sure you get a good TA. Explained most things well. If you go to class, and actually try you'll be fine. Only hard things were midterm and paper.
Pretty interesting class but there was sooo much reading. And she doesn't go over all of the readings in class, so you pretty much do have to read them all. She doesn't clearly lay out what is going to be on the exams and I really didn't know what to expect going into them.
If you don't like reading, don't take this class as there is tons of reading each week. Fujino was an overall good lecturer but her voice is pretty droning. Have knocked out in lecture a couple of times. Get a good TA and you'll do great. Also, don't take this as an "easy GE" because their grading criteria on midterm and final were pretty specific.
Her lectures are the most important! She assigns a ton of readings which are definitely interesting, but I didn't read most of them and still passed the class with an A-. Just need to skim them for section & rely on lecture material for the midterm and final.
Race & Resistance is by far the most important class I've EVER taken @ ucsb. This class opened my eyes & changed my life. Professor Fujino is really passionate about the material & is the sweetest person on earth. Everyone I know who took this class said it was one of the best classes they've ever taken. PLEASE take this class, you won't regret it!
Only good things to say! Fujino is an amazing professor with extensive background on the topics she discusses- Race & Resistance (asam9) was the best class I've taken & changed my perspective on the world. 2 short essays & midterm & final, studying is relatively easy if you go to lecture & engage in section. Katherine Lee is a great TA as well!
Fujino is an amazing lecturer and you can tell that she genuinely cares about the material. This class was eye-opening and the material she assigned was interesting (although long to read). Really makes you work for an A, though. Heavy reading and requires a lot of critical thinking/analysis. Somehow, the class didn't feel like alot of work though.
Fujino is amazing and go to her office hours she is super helpful if you are looking for help in class or outside projects you want to work on with her. Lectures are very informative, learned a lot from this class. Tests were easy, but grading criteria was not clear between TAs. Attend lecture because she does not post slides!
Unreal professor, she is highly well respected in the academic community and gives amazing lectures. Super sweet lady, very approachable and understanding. Gave great insight and actually recommended a book for my final paper I really enjoyed. definitely reccomend.
Professor Fujino has to be one of my favorite professors. She is very passionate. Her lectures are full of information and she keeps it interesting. The class covers important material, but for the final and midterm she looks for specific details in the essays, so make sure you learn specifics.
This professor and her materials are just OK and the grading easily makes AS AM 9 a class you DON'T wanna take. Everybody got a C to B-. Efforts were ridiculously ignored. Tons of reading every week. You have to discuss and present in section to actually get POINTs. Short essays for midterm and final compose 80% of the grade. Just DON'T.
Professor Fujino gave very engaging and well-rounded lectures, always incorporated the overall themes into material. The exams were a bit complex and very detail-oriented, more than I had anticipated for a GE class. Readings are highly emphasized.
prof fujino is passionate and an expert in her field, i totally enjoyed the class but the midterm/final grading was unnecessarily tough and expects more than what the question asks (like you can read the TAs minds). generous reading amount and lectures are important. colin sibley was a great TA though! wish i took it pass/fail for GE
Professor Fujino is very passionate about what she teaches and is amazing at teaching. I think the only thing I disliked was how exam heavy this class was, 80% of your grade is just exams and I just felt like that's poorly structured. Needless to say my TA Colin Sibley was amazing too and thanks to him I actually passed this class.
I learned a lot from this class but I need to emphasize that it is not easy to get an A in, look at the DailyNexus grade search. I really recommend taking this class Pass/No Pass because the two exams where you write 3 short essays make up 80% of your grade and it is very difficult to get an A in especially since the TA's 20% is difficulttopredict.
She has great intentions but she is not the most clear professor. Lectures the entire class, will not provide her slides to students, and assignsunrealistic amounts of reading. Grade is based on Final (40%) and Midterm (40%). 3 essays, closed notes, based on reading/lectures, in person. Good class, but not an easy class for a GE or to get a A in.
I loved this class!! It's honestly fairly easy to do well in if you just go to lecture. I didn't do half of the readings, but only missed like two lectures and have an A. There aren't any assignments except reading and midterm/final, and one other event write up. Worst part is she doesn't post slides but she's a very engaging professor
Content was interesting. Lots of assigned reading. Sections were VERY helpful. 80% of your grade is two in class essays (midterm and final) and they're pretty tough graders, but an A is achievable as long as you stay engaged with the readings and lectures. Slides aren't posted so you can't really skip, but it was worth going to!
Lectures are dense and missing a lecture could lead to missing important information. She does not post lecture slides. Reading is mandatory but she assigns around 40 pages per week which sometimes comprise entire test questions. Contextual understanding and specific examples from readings/notes are required to score well. TA's 20% is uncertain.
She is extremely passionate about her work, kind hearted, caring, enthusiastic, I LOVED her as a person but I intended to take this class as an easy GE and it was NOT!!! So much reading and she does not post lecture slides, and grading is very exam heavy. Only take this class if you are truly passionate about the subject, but not for an easy GE :)
Best professor I've had, but be aware attendance is crucial, she doesn't post the lecture slides and those r literally everything you need besides the readings. The exams are the same, just remember specific examples for the mini essays. Other than that, I loved how passionate and genuine she was. She's an amazing professor, 1000% recommend :)
Professor Fujino is very passionate about this subject and her lectures are very informative and are the basis for the exams. Exams rely on reading the material and mostly on lecture notes. All readings are provided as pdfs. Section has weekly write ups and is helpful with midterm and final review. Finals are written long essay answers.
The tests are heavy based off lectures
