will NOT help you with papers! Interesting in class but assignments aren't fair!
Jeske is definitely available for help outside of class, but you have to make the effort yourself. Her lectures are very clear, and are most effective if you read AFTER attending the lecture.
Dr jeske is mean. she will rip u apart and make you forget about the love of wisdom that is the true pursuit of philosophy
I had her for a summer class so maybe this is different during the year but her class was so easy, I got an A+! Pay attention in class, take notes, and the reading is semi-optional in my opinion.
ironic, that a person like this should teach ethics!
Jeske is very sarcastic and dry, but she obviously knows the material well and comes up with slews of relevant examples to solidify your understanding of the material. I have been satisfied with this class, and as long as you pay attention and come in for help if you need it, you should have no problem
she constantly talks about how beautiful she is, a stupid fake man named rudolfo, and what would happen if she mowed the class down with a machine gun. i don't reccomend this class.
terrible. whiny voice. couldnt be less helpful or interesting if she tried.
class was awful overall. both diane and the TA's didnt care wether we knew the material and didn't care what our opinons were, as far as they were concerned we were wrong no matter what. bad lectures with no point and tests graded poorly. i would not reccomend this class or professor.
I learned how to think, which can be both good and bad (but not at the same time!).
Lectures are the most boring experience of your life. She takes questions from everyone and usually gets through 2-3 ppt slides per lecture. Ethics is ridiculously easy compared to other philo classes like intro or even P&JS.
She talks about her cat more than philosophy. She strays from topics often and isn't straight forward about what we need to know. Lecture is basically useless for this class the only way to do good is by having a good TA.
She's err.. kinda boring. This class is painfully easy. I sat in lectures doing symbolic logic homework half the time and still did well. I also had a couple of clarity issues with tests and grading. The TA was actually a better teacher, too bad they don't let him run the class.
She is an amazing teacher if you put the work in, and you have to put the work in.
Diane is a fun individual, but her teaching style isn't. Half of my class was made up of grad. students and I don't think she realized some of us undergrads. didn't know what she was talking about half the time. I asked her for help on a paper & she was good with that. Problem was my paper was marked up with same issues we discussed. Frustrating.
Matters of Life and Death- she does talk about her cat but not more than the actual topics. shes really funny and very helpful. you dont have to read bc she explains everything in class and she isnt a hard grader. you just have to come to class and listen and take notes. very easy and i recommend it!
Most annoying professor ever. Constantly talks about cats and uses THE most condescending voice I've ever heard. Wastes time by repeating lectures. She thinks everything she says is hysterical and acts like we're kindergartners. It seems like she thinks that everything she says are the most important words you'll ever hear in your life. Just...no.
The absolute most painful class I have ever experienced. She wastes time by repeating lectures and talking about her cat lady lifestyle. Completely unfair grading on every exam and paper. When approached about my grades, she avoided me in lecture and didn't e-mail me back at all. Just.. AWFUL.
She tells a lot of tired jokes. It gets pretty irritating after a while. Not to be recommended.
There was a lot of dense reading (it is philosophy), but she went over all the testable portions in class so it wasn't too bad as long as you showed up. She did talk about her cat, but it was mostly relavent and not too distracting. She is a sharp, articulate professor who really knows her stuff and is easy to learn from if you pay attention.
Never has anything interesting to say. Extremely boring.
Diane is sarcastic and fun. She covers everything relevant for exams, using interesting and enjoyable examples. She believes students capable of high-quality work and respects their opinions and arguments.
Diane is very annoying and painfully unfunny. If she would stop trying to be funny, the class wouldn't be as bad.
Attendance is not mandatory, but don't expect to do well if you don't come to class. Prof. Jeske's exams are written directly from her lectures. She also is willing to bump your grade up to half a letter grade if you attend class regularly, go to office hours, and participate in class. She's pretty straight-forward and to the point - a smart lady!
She's a great professor who really knows her stuff. Really receptive to questions that lead to good discussion. Focuses on what you need to know for the exams. Work hard and it will pay off, and make sure you come to class.
She is a good teacher. It's important to be actively engaged in her classes; you will be rewarded and if you aren't it can be boring. I personally think she is funny and keeps it interesting. The only problem is it takes a while to get to the point of the material. However, she's just trying to make sure it is thoroughly explained.
Hilarious, class is actually fun to go to. Take-home essays are pretty difficult, make sure you go in to her office hours and ask questions about anything you don't understand. Overall, a great professor!
She is funny! I have to hold back my snickers. She is not very clear about what she expects from us. It's like we're supposed to know and then she knocks points off because we couldn't read her mind. She wants us to explain every little thing. It's best to make simple arguments, not complicated and well-thought. She likes precision and concision.
Somewhat of a tough grader because her expectations are vague, but she literally lays out the arguments exactly how she wants them discussed in the exams, so take just pay attention. And if you enjoy sarcasm (who doesn't?) then you'll think she's hilarious. Her sense of humor makes going to class enjoyable.
Had Professor Jeske for Intro to Ethics over the summer and thought it was a blast. She's funny, engaging, and is always extremely clear on what you need to know for exams, but make sure that your language is precise when writing papers.
Here's the thing, if you go to class and pay attention, you'll do just fine. Dr. Jeske outlines and covers the material very effectively and clearly, but you have to be there to get it. Some of the material can be pretty tricky to understand if you don't have a philosophy background, so go to class. Dr. Jeske is pretty cool though.
Lots of reading, but you can get by for the most part not doing it. Lectures can either be long and tedious or quick and engaging depending on the topic. Dr. Jeske herself is funny, and her presentations make taking notes easy. However, if you don't go to class, you'll miss out on info you can't find anywhere else.
Dr. Jeske is definitely the worst instructor I've had a class with so far.
She is funny, but sometime that makes it hard to get her point on a certain topic. Exams contain only essay questions. It requires you to remember a lot of stuff exactly. You should really pay attention to the details of the material based on the outline she gives.
While some of Diane's lectures seemed a little repetitive, she taught her students how to think critically about philosophy and the material we studied. Easy do to well if you take good notes and actively listen in class.
Professor Jeske is a great teacher. If you go to lecture and pay attention you should do well. Sometimes things can be confusing but if you ask her for help she will clear things up. She is also funny and makes lectures fun
While Diane's personality is a lot like most other profs from here or Kirkwood, she isn't a good speaker. She also frequently seemed bitter or angry about something.
Jeske is an awesome professor to talk to one-on-one; she's hilarious and knows the material pretty well. But there was a lot of reading, way more than I was expecting. It was easy to pass (3 tests, 3 papers) and attendance isn't required for discussions but it can help your grade. Lectures got boring and she doesn't always clarify clearly in them.
She makes philosophy easy to understand, and even funny sometimes. I came into "Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" a first semester freshman. I thought the content would go over my head, but she made it comprehendible. It really wasn't necessary to do the readings because she explains everything in class.
Only a few assignments throughout the whole semester, and mostly based off understanding and knowledge. You definitely have to do the readings for this class, and it would be best to attend, as the exams are taken directly from reading material and lecture, and Diane does a great job explaining the readings during lecture. NO TEXTBOOK!!!
jeske is an easy grader but really awkward and i thought humanities courses were supposed to be enriching but she's dull.
Diane is the best professor I have had at the University of Iowa thus far. She is very funny and each class usually starts with 20-30 minutes of review from the previous class (so if you can't make one lecture its no biggy). She ALWAYS answers questions thoroughly. Write down her examples from class and use them on the test to get an A.
Professor Jeske always keeps things interesting in lecture. She can say some controversial things, but she gives you a forewarning at the beginning of the course. The class is graded on a few short papers and exams, so it is important to put a lot of work into them. In this class, if you put in the effort, you should receive a good grade.
TERRIBLE in being accessible outside of class however she is a very relatable. She's clear about what her tests will be over but the tests are EXTENSIVE. Try buying a hand massage for the pain your hands will feel after an exam. She's not very kind about sick days. I genuinely was sick to the point where I couldn't stand and she still docked points
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED PROF JESKE. And yes I would actually scream that. She was the reason why I decided to minor in Philosophy. Extremely relatable, funny, I didn't find her awkward at all. Considering it was the first philosophy course I've ever taken, I was full on obsessed as she explains the material with multiple examples. Lots of papers though!
I dreaded every class. Without my boyfriend's support and encouragement I could not have put up with this instructor. She's like Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.
Easily by far the worst teacher not only at Iowa but in my life. She is not acceptable today meet outside of class. She wont respond to any emails from anyone. Goes over same stuff over and over (its a drag). They way she walks is shes surperior to the students. Isnt helpful or reasoning on any assignments she really wants to screw you over
Is by far the worst teacher Ive ever had. She doesnt show up to her posted office hours and when she does she meets with you for 5 minutes offering minimum help possible. She is also not reasonable with grades nor will she tell you what she wants from you. When you ask a question in lecture its always deemed wrong. Dont expect replies either
Self-righteous & so boring. Take a class with Davidovic instead.
Professor Jeske was very witty and made learning about philosophy more relatable in my opinion. I did well in her Meaning of Life class without doing most of the assigned readings because she went over them in detail during her lectures. Overall I thought she was a solid professor and I thought the course was very straightforward.
I loved Professor Jeske. Her witty sense of humor made me laugh every day. As for her class, the content was somewhat boring. You don't need to read though, because she goes over reading extensively in class. The tests are long, but the two paper assignments are easy. Go to discussion because you get points for just showing up.
Jeske is super funny and I was excited to go to lecture every week. She explains the material really well and even allows lecture time for questions. This class was great and something I didn't have to force myself to study for.
One of my favorite professors. She's hilarious and uses a ton of examples so you really understand the material. The tests are really straight forward and almost exactly the same as the reading questions. Make sure you do the brief weekly assignments though because missing just one or two can really bring your grade down.
Professor Jeske has amazing lectures. This is by far my favorite class and is easy to follow with lectures, readings, and discussions. The content is clearly relayed and with the amount of support given between worksheets that coincide with readings and practice exams, it is straightforward what you need to know. Participation is easy and fun.
Professor Jeske is a brilliant professor. She explains concepts extremely well with examples that clarify. She is also very funny, and not in a cringey way. She responds to student's questions very well. It is obvious she knows her stuff. As long as you show up and take good notes, it shouldn't be too hard to get a good grade on the exams.
Professor Jeske is amazing. I had her freshman year for Liberty but didn't get to really know her until I took Phil of Law & Nature of Evil. She's hilarious, I was always laughing in her class & learned so much! A very smart lady who also pushed me to really dive into the material & my thoughts in our assignments. Great class discussion, too!
I can't say I enjoyed Jeske's class. I love philosophy as a subject but I found her extremely dull. Whenever a question was asked in class it felt like she only made things more confusing. Impossible to get a straight 'yes' or 'no' answer.
Jeske is one of my favorite professors at UI. Her lectures are great because she breaks everything down well and gives entertaining examples. I think she's really funny but her humor might be kind of dry/dark for some people. I've also always found her to be more than happy to meet outside of class to help with questions.
As a first year, Professor Jeske may have been the worst professor I've had. Why would you tell your students that you don't expect anyone to get above a C in your class on the first day, yeah create impression Jeske.
Professor Jeske's lectures are mandatory, but she goes over the same slide for 2 or 3 lectures. Professor Jeske also gives out a study guide for exams but only uses 2 or 3 off of the study guide. She told our class that her exams weren't cumulative but proceeded to put questions regarding our last module on the exam. I don't recommend.
Professor Jeske is nice and philosphy is alright but the exams are all long answer which makes them difficult. Lecture attendance is mandatory and she goes over the same slides for multiple days. She is very easy to tune out. There are 3 exams and 3 midterms.
Gives back papers with no comments, and offers little explanation to the grade she gave.
She gives good lectures, but it can be easy to zone out which makes the class confusing. Essentially, if you pay attention to lecture and ask questions in discussion, then you'll be fine. Study guides are pretty good and there are lots of opportunities to get help. Papers/tests are graded kind of harshly.
Often unfocused, seemed uninterested in teaching the class, both the lecture and smaller seminars (it was a gen ed class so I do kinda get it). In the smaller seminar classes (20-30 people), she would sometimes interrupt students and dissuaded proper philosophical debate, instead just trying to get through the material and keep all the class moving
I think that Diane is genuinely a really nice person, she is definitely a philosophy professor if you know what I mean. She does come across as pretentious, but I feel that it is hard not to sound pretentious when your work deals with complex and abstract theories about the goodness of humans, etc. I am a Diane Jeske apologist, and I am not sorry.
I have taken two classes with Diane now and I have enjoyed every lecture she has given. I know a lot of people on here have said that she is too "pretentious" or "plays devils advocate" too much but obviously you haven't been in enough philosophy classes then. The point of these classes is to constantly challenge thought no matter the topic.
I will never take another class of hers. I just hate her teaching style and the way she shoves information at you. I think we had 1 exam, and it was a written final that had over half of the questions from the first half, and maybe 3 from the second half of the semester. If you take this, study your butt off and review the first half of the semeste
easy to understand
I've taken two of her classes and had great experiences with both. She explains things super well and the exam questions come directly from the lectures and readings. There were weekly quizzes that were pretty easy, two exams, and two writing assignment. All of the exam questions are directly from the study guides so if you do those you're fine
Prof. Jeske often talked about the same slides in multiple days' worth of lectures. Lectures got very boring and not very many people came. The material is relatively easy, as are the tests, but it is easy to get confused. Make sure to attend discussions to understand/review content without all of the sidetracked info Jeske gives.
Meaning of Life is a super easy gen-ed course. I liked Diane, she had slides that highlighted the main points, but she went in depth during lectures. If you missed class, you wouldn't fall behind. Her class is pretty hard to do bad in because of how many point opportunities you have, and how easy the assignments were.
She makes lectures considerably entertaining and enjoyable. The only bone to pick with this class is that there is no grace period for absences for discussion sections. The final being on friday kinda sucked too.
I notice that negative reviews get removed.
Diane's lectures can be boring or great, and it really depends on class participation. Difficulty is really up to the TA you have. Attendance matters!
Very easy A. I think I skipped every class for an entire month and when I came back we where still talking about the same subject. The lectures are repetitive and she presents about two slides per class. There where few assignments and they were all pretty easy. Midterms were easy as long as you did the study guides.
So awful.
Likes to hear herself talk. I almost felt the
She was an amazing professor and made me think about switching my major to philosophy. Her class discussions were engaging and fun and I learned a lot from the content that she taught. Overall, I would take a class with her in a heartbeat. One downside is she graded hard but if you used the feedback on the next paper, you'll do great!
I felt sorry for her.
Professor Jeske was great. Her classes were fun. Her tests were challenging. She gave very clear feedback on her papers and exams. All materials for the class were provided through ICON. She was very accessible through email and office hours.
gets freaky with students mainly jonathan
Lectures are points. Slow pace. Grading slow. High score because she can lecture quite well. Highly knowledgeable + answers questions in lectures clearly. My biggest complaint about the course is that essays + tests are regurgitation. Would have liked more opinion based as I think that is the heart of philosophy.
Totally unprofessional. So bad in so many different ways. Only someone in temperament conservative/submissive could think this is an intelligent person.
I really think she just enjoys hearing herself talk, most of the lectures are off topic and it takes forever to get through a slide, but attendance is graded so good luck. Impossible to reach outside of class, but shes relatively nice so.
Her class wasn't bad, but lectures always seemed to take forever due to the fact she likes the sound of her own voice. Seemed like we always talked about the same topics over multiple classes. The exams were the worst part if you hate writing essays free hand in which there was two and the final.

No self-awareness, no social awareness. 210lb 75% body fat. Typical American bumpkin.
snobby, boring lectures. exams are curved down if the average does too well(not that good at all).
I can't post a comment negating the statement, "ugly people are really very humane."
I don't know what is up with all these bad ratings, but I had her and she was amazing. She's retiring after this semester, so I guess people won't be needing to see these anymore. Anyways, I really enjoyed her lectures, she was funny, and made me question everything about relationships. Happy Retirement!
Obnoxious, lowest common denominator
My post got deleted. I wish America had freedom of speech. Why would anyone defend this country when you can't even make basic criticisms as I have made?
Diane is a high school receptionist posing as a philosophy teacher..
I couldn't tell her the part that would break her heart,
Rigid and dysgenic
This is the sort of person who likes TV commercials.
