Very good at explaining the concepts sometimes even better than my lecture teacher. But she grades very harshly on labs, tests, and papers.
Not very friendly, but SUCH an easy class. take this instead of ecology or cell bio lab FOR SURE.
she was really easy and really understanding...
She is a tough teacher, but very good and very fair. She knows what she is talking about and always willing to give explanations. I would strongly suggest taking her for lab if you want to learn something.
easy class, she'll be nicer to you if you sweet talk her a little bit. when i took it i wrote down the answers by the 'stations' when we had to go around and id things, but i dont think anyone needed them. labs are really easy.
she is always ready to answer questions and help you out, she is a great teacher and labs are easy, final was REALLY hard

She's probably the easiest of all lab teachers. Take her if she's available. She's helpful and easy to understand.
TAKE THIS TEACHER! Mrs. Jokinen is probably the greatest and most easiest lab teacher at loyola. She is super cool and a very sweet lady. take her no matter what!
SHE KNOWS HER STUFF.NOT THE WARMEST OF PROFS.BUT HELPFUL.MIDTERM & FINAL WERE TOUGH,& THAT'S MOST OF YOUR GRADE-DON'T SCREW IT UP!KNOW THE LABS WELL.OVERALL,FAR MORE INTERESTING THAN CELL BIO LAB! TAKE HER IF U WANT TO LEARN. DO YOU? IF NOT WHY R U HE
Very good teacher.Very clear.Helpful.Tests are straight forward but study for them bc they take up a lot of your grade!Read labs before class and get there on time bc there are quizes! You learn a lot from her that helps in lecture
She doesn't have the most outgoing personality but she does know her stuff. Good teacher overall. The exams can be tricky if you don't study for them. She explains things well. Took her in the summer and did just fine.
Seems nice and easy at first, but a total freak. She is not very familiar with her topics, says what is only in the lab report and if you ask quisiotns repeats the same thing . She'll form an opinion of you and you'll get a grade based on that, not the work you do. Avoid her at all costs
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR ANYTHING!!! WHOEVER GAVE HER A GOOD RATING IS BECAUSE THEY PROBABLY HAD A SMILEON THEIR FACE THE WHOLE TIME OR KISSED HER BUTT! IF U WALK IN THE CLASS TIRED OR NOT SMILING,SHE'LL THINK UR A BAD PERSON,MAKE AN OPINION,AND GIVE U A BAD GRADE!
SHE SHOULD BE FIRED FOR GRADING BASED ON WHO SHE LIKES AND DISLIKES.THAT IS NOT THE WAY TO GRADE STUDENTS.TRUST ME-DONT LISTEN TO ANY OF THESE OTHER PEOPLE.IF SHE FORMS AN OPINION ON U,THAT IS HOW U'LL BE GRADED.SO IF U KISS BUTT,THEN TAKE HER.IF U R NOT SO PERKY&SMILEY DO NOT TAKE HER!
the person with the first comment saying she's horrible is an idiot. Take this lab for your required lab credit. You do have to study for the 2 exams, but they're not too hard and right from the labs data and explanation notes. She's also a really nice lady. Recommend!!
She knows what little she knows and that's it. Someone played kick the dog too many times with this one. Ugh!
Bad teacher, worse personality. Thats why if you give her a wink shefeels better about herself and will increase your grade. Its not worth it!
She seems ok but the year just started. Still i think she seems like someone who is definatly willing to help out.
She knows the material and presents it in a clear form. Study for tests- they make up most of your grade. She will tell you what to expect on tests. If you do not understand something in the lab, ask the teacher. She always tries to explain things.
Ohh my god this teacher is nothig but a total frump. She has the worst personality that I have ever seen. If your GPA matters to you do not take her lab. Avoid her at all costs. And she smells bad.
I really can't comment on her odor because i stay as far away as possible. Weird, boring, and knows only about as much as you can get from your friends on the corner.

She is a nice lady. Kind of reminds me of Mrs. Crubapple (sp?) from the Simpsons. She is helpful so if you have questions don't be afraid to ask her. She seems like she does not get laid that much but is very nice - as for the odor I can't comment.
gr8 teacher, simple lays things out and if you listen... tests are a breeze..highly reecommended
very business-like for a lab prof... excellent at explaining things in a simple way. will basically walk you thru the lab. reading labs and putting in a reasonable amnt of studying will get you an A. she's cool....(you ppl gotta grow up--she doesnt smell)
This is a great class. Her powerpoints are almost what is verbateme on the test. Great for your GPA
Ok I didn't have her for a normal bio class but for a nursing class but she's awesome. only problem is it's at 8:15am so no one is awake enough to appreciate how great of a teacher she is
She is very organized, and tries to make everything as clear as possible. Her lectures are always online along with objective questions to help study for the exams. She's an awesome professor, and I definitely recommend her class!!
I highly recommend this class. She makes everything very easy to understand, and is always available for help when it is needed. She also puts all of her lectures and study guides on the internet for extra studying and exams. Take this class, you wont regret it.
in her bio lab, you are almost guaranteed an a. i'm not saying that you dont have to study, but she makes you understand the material. i recommend this professor.
I loved this professor. Her blackboard/ lecture powerpoints go slide by slide with the objectives. do them 2 days before exam and read over them and you have a promised A on the exam. everything on exam comes from study guide.
very easy if you know how she works, ask her questions about a specific a specific question and she'll just give you the answer, or give you hints that lead to teh answer very helpful highly recommended
she is an easy grader for the labs, but has no people skills. she is very rude and acts as if everyone knows as much as her. her labs are easy, but the tests are difficult. be prepared to do a lot of studying.
She is a great teacher. It's easy to see that she enjoys teaching biology; she knows a lot and she explains everything thouroughly. She goes over every lab step by step and helps you find things under the microscope if you're having troubles. The tests aren't hard if you study the labs and go over her power points. I definietely recommend her!
Outstanding professor. She will not only keep your interest, but the labs really do work! They are all very visual and hands-on, and easy to complete and understand. Tests/quizzes are fairly simple if you review properly. Very liberal with office hours. Excellent member of the Loyola faculty!
Professor Jokinen rocks... she is very good, class is easy, tests are a little bit harder, she hands homework and has little quizes in class, so you need to attend. I liked her teaching style.
Very helpful in lab, tests are a little tricky. I would recommend taking her lab, you will not regret it.
If you are reading this, Dr. Jokinen, I could use you to teach all sciences! I highly recommend her... clear notes and lectures, very helpful, read the textbook and there's no way you can't ace this class. My favorite professor at Loyola.
Genetics Lab is sooo much fun! Definitely beats Gen Bio Lab and class almost always finishes early. Dr. Jokinen is nice and she will help you with any questions you have. Her way of explaining things is very clear and understandable. No quizzes, unless people start showing up to lab late, and 2 exams. Pay attention to detail for the exams. 94+ = A
I really messed up on the midterm and still managed a decent grade. Pay attention in class and you should do fine
prof J is awesome!! lectures are very clear and she makes biology very easy to understand. go to the lecture and do the objectives she gives before the exam, and youll get an A.
She is so awesome. The homework can get a little tedious, but she doesn't hand out a lot of it and it's easy to get full credit on it. The tests are pretty much outlined by the objectives, but if you decide to take her (I don't see why you shouldn't), ask her if you have any questions. She is super nice and approachable.
Tied for favorite teacher for sure! I loved her class! I don't want to jinx myself for the final but I got A's on all her tests so far and I had her for 101 and 102. She's so clear and her powerpoints are very helpful- I used them and Mastering Biology to study, never used the book unless it was to look a a chart. Best science teacher here!
Jokinen is one of my absolute favorite teachers at Loyola. Her lectures are very clear and the tests are based on the powerpoints. She gives review questions on blackboard which help a lot when studying. Attendance is a must, a lot of points are clicker points.
Lab is easy and you will get 5/5 on every lab. There are two exams. The problem questions are easy if you practice, but its the multiple choice that's hard. So make sure you study the prelab and the powerpoint slides and you will get an A.
Prof J rocks. her powerpoints and lectures are really clear and very helpful when studying. she answers any questions during her office hrs very clearly. I have had her for 101 and 102 and have gotten A's both semesters. HIGHLY recommended!
Jokinen was not easy peasy, her class required studying the objectives and memorizing her powerpoints. Your grade is based completely on two exams and a cumalitive final. There are other professors out there, but if you do your part on the work and studying you will get an A.
Great Professor!! Very clear and entertaining...I remember in one of our classes we spent about 45 min getting organized in a line around the room so she could show us how transcription and translation worked. I learned a lot in that class. Attendance was mandatory but you could get away with it by giving your clicker to a friend in class.
very helpful, all lectures posted online. uses clickers in class for points. lowest test score dropped and replaced with masteringbiology online homework grade. tests are rather straight forward and if a question is confusing and a lot of people get it wrong/talk to her about it she'll make it extra credit. highly recommend taking her.
I liked her a lot. She was very helpful and explained everything clearly. For a lab, it really wasn't so bad and we usually got out early. A 94 is an A and there are not a lot of points, so that's a bit tough, but I don't see how anyone could get lower than a B. I definitely recommend Genetics lab with her over taking Cell Bio or Ecology labs.
Super easy! Talks the labs through and tells you the asnwers to everything. Gives full points for everything. Need to study for the 2 exams though.
She is a good prof, but isn't that easy. to pass her class, you HAVE TO read. her in class powerpoints are very laid back and easy, but your grade is completely based on attendance, exams, and masteringbio. i thought i could get away without much studying and ended up with a C+. i cannot emphasize the importance of reading enough for her class.READ
I really don't understand what people like about her, she was a horrible professor. The exams were always filled with things we never covered in class. She was completely unapproachable and extremely rude when I asked for help. You basically have to teach yourself ALL of the material, and it's more work than it's worth.
Loved bio before this class (had Castignetti for 101, so worth it). Unapproachable, wouldn't put up any study materials like old exams/practice problems. Gave unit objectives for exam studying that were not even close to what were on exams. Discussions were completely useless and lecture was boring and dry and mandatory. Would never take again.
I like her a lot, straight forward tests. Highly recommend.
I had Jokinen for both lecture and lab this semester and I really liked her. Bio is a tough subject but if you do the work, it is very easy to do well in her courses. Take her!
I had her for 101 and 102, and I loved her. Her notes and exams are very straightforward. She likes to make little jokes her and there. Lectures can be long sometimes, but you can get through them and understand the material. I did not need to reference the book that much for 101. I used it a bit more for 102.
Explains everything very well. She's straightforward and always puts lectures up online. Her tests aren't super difficult as long as you commit the lectures to memory! Would definitely recommend her, especially if you've never had Bio before or didn't understand. Her lectures will get you through 101!
I highly recommend her--she lectures very clearly and her exams are relatively straight forward and directly from the lecture. An "A" is very possible if you go to class and review the powerpoints from lecture. Also, she provides extra credit that can help you out if you don't do as well as hoped on one of the exams. Definitely take!
Super easy but informative course. Diane is solid professor. Take her for a no nonsense class, save your energy for Bio Lab - which for some reason is vastly more difficult than the main lecture course and only worth 1/4 the credit.
Like everyone else said, Jokinen is very straightforward. If you had any confusion about the basics in biology before, they will be cleared after her class. Jokinen knows what she's talking about and makes it possible to get a good grade. Sometimes long lectures, but it's a huge subject. Very good teacher.
if you took AP bio then this is an easy class for you, if not then you are going to have to read the book and TRULY do masteringbio. 3 test and a final(not cummlative)&weekly hw is your grade. if you go to class she will give you EC. a lot of it to if you arent passing the test and go to class she will give you th e "needed" point to pass the class
Dr. Jokinen is extremely thorough and her lectures crystalline in clarity. I have come across some fellow students who gave her some harsh crique simply because they received a low grade. Her lectures follow exactly as MateringBiology assignments and tests are demanding but certainly straightforward. If you study, a high grade will ensue.
Awesome teacher. She covers everything in her power points. Not a total pushover, you need to go to class to get participation points and need to study to get an A+ on tests. She puts up an objectives list as a study guid which is pretty much the test. Lecture is interesting if you choose to pay attention. You won't regret taking her class.
She teaches straight from a powerpoint that she puts no interest or color to. She simply reads her powerpoint off. Dont use your computer in class or you will get distracted because her lectures are that boring. Her tests are based off the powerpoint so just memorize those. Final is noncumulative. Clicker points in class give a nice boost as well.
Decent lecturer, but nothing spectacular and did wander at times. Very approachable. With EC opportunities and 1/5 of your grade based on HW and participation, it would be very difficult not to do well in this class. Exams are non-cumulative, multiple choice. Attend lectures, study ppts, reinforce with textbook, and you're good for an A.
not that great. lectures r a drag. her tests r difficult and I cannot find the right way to study. I wish she provided us with study guides and not useless objectives. her test questions r so tricky i hate it! the only good thing about her is that the final is not cumulative.
If you go to class, read the book, and do the MasteringBiology assignments, you will get an A in this class. Jokinen is a very straight-forward professor and her lectures are at least somewhat interesting. My only complaint would be that she isn't very approachable. Overall, a very easy class if you put a little bit of work in.
Her class is pretty easy because we get a lot of extra credit with discussion. I didn't do that great on the tests but I have an A- just cause of the extra credit. Tests are alright, lectures are extremely boring...I just sit on my computer the whole time.
Take this class! Prof. Jokinen is very clear and easy in her lecturing. Does use redundant powerpoint but they're straight and to the point. There are 4 exams, final included, that are multiple choice and non-cumulative for the final. If you attend class, study her powerpoints, your notes and do mastering, you get an A for sure.
PowerPoints may be vague at times. Lectures are boring for the most part, slips in a few jokes here and there. Had to study from the book for better understanding. Overall not a bad teacher to take, her finals aren't cumulative.
PowerPoints are sometimes vague and lectures are boring for the most part, slips in a few jokes here and there. Had to study from the book for better understanding. Overall not a bad teacher to take, her finals aren't cumulative.
Lectures are very straightforward. Don't need the book at all, study for exams from powerpoints. Exams are very straightforward. Discussions are extra credit. Very easy to understand material and get an A in the course. Third time I took her, like her a lot.
I love Diane! I had her both semesters and got two A's. She explains everything perfectly in class, and her lectures are based on the book. She always lets you know what will be on the test so you know what to expect. She's a great professor and a nice lady.
I really enjoyed having professor Jokinen. Her pre-lab lectures were very helpful and she came around to answer any questions people had. Her exams were challenging, but she always let us know what would be on it. I would recommend taking her.
Great Teacher! She really cares about her students and is really nice. Lectures can be dry at times but overall it's a smooth ride. The class difficulty is fairly easy. I strongly recommend her!
Jokinen was really easy and straight forward. Three tests (2 exams + 1 noncumulative final).. really easy. Even if you do bad on one of them, the extra credit from the discussions help alot so go to discussions and go to class to get all the clicker points..hard to pay attention in class but still hardly ever used the book! really easy take her!!
Probably da worst bio teacher ever. I have her for lab and makes kings impossible. Class average was a 48%
She sucks. she doesn't teach well, reads off the powerpoints and makes u solve some crazy clicker point questions which are harder than the real test. overall, not that great.
Terrible at explaining things. Don't believe all the previous ratings. She is way different this year. I took her because I heard she was easy but this year she is wayyyy too hard. I even took AP Bio and love biology but I barely have a D in the class. AVOID this teacher. She is a GPA killer
Stay away
I dunno what people mean when they say Jokinen isn't clear, I personally think that she's really clear as long as you pay attention in class. I liked everything about this class except the fact that that everyone failed the second test. But usually tests are pretty straight forward, look at the powerpoints, objectives, and mastering homework.
do not take hard
I don't get what people are saying about her. She is a very nice lady. Sure her lectures can be boring at times, but she is VERY clear on what you need to know on the tests. Personally, I don't how she is one on one but she couldn't be that bad. Her tests are all application, if you know the material a little more in depth you should do fine.
She is a nice professor who really tries to break down the heavily detailed concepts of Genetics. Although the grading scale is pretty generous, the tests seem to become more in depth and tricky as the semester progresses. Our class received no "curve", most likely due to the heavy amount of cheating from some students.
I think Professor Jokinen is great. She is helpful in every way possible and will answer any questions. The tests aren't too bad as long as you study. It was nice having her again, and I recommend her for future students. Lectures are kind of dry, so it's best reading the book for info.
Ms. Jokinen was a great professor for Bio 102. She makes very easy to follow power-points which her exams are based off of. She's a very entertaining lecturer and made the subject material interesting. She gives out a good amount of extra credit, so an A is not hard.
Not helpful at all and ridicules you in front of the entire class if you don't have basic knowledge of microscopes etc.
Her lecture slides are only useful if you attend the lecture. That being said, she is pretty boring to listen too and it's easy to lose focus. Her tests are relatively difficult and I feel like she does not prepare you well for them. She's not a terrible professor, but there are better bio teachers than her.
Professor Joking really cares about her students. She assigns meaningful homework and her tests cover the material presented in lecture. Her lectures are clear and she posts all the powerpoints online as a resource for students. I would definitely recommend her for BIO 101
She's a bit boring, but she's very helpful and I think one of the easier general bio lab instructors. She definitely knows whats she's doing more than the grad students who teach the class.
Read and study. It'll help a lot! Her power points are also pretty helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory but she gives a lot clicker questions which are worth a good amount of points. Also, stay on top of Mastering! If you do the hints (and get them right!!) you can get A LOT of extra credit! Don't waste your opportunities!
You can pass just by going off her slides, but if you really want a good grade read the text, there are some things there that she doesn't go into depth. Lecture and discussion aren't mandatory but they do help boost your grade do to participation points. Extra credit is available in mastering homework.
This class is very boring. She is very easy to zone out. Participation matters so you can get clicker points and there is extra credit on mastering hw. Takes notes on what she says verbally rather than just copy the slides, you will get more out of the lecture and it'll keep you focused understand what's going on. You have to put the work in
What is this!!????
Biol 102.... don't just don't . Seriously drop as soon as possible. SOOOOO HARD!!!!
Jok is a very nice teacher. She is very straight forward in her powerpoints and basically whats on the powerpoint is on the test. Great Teacher and very doable Tests. Literally go over powerpoint before test and do bio problems in book and you're good. Easy A if you study
Jokinen is a great option for 101. Lectures are boring, but all the info you need is on the PowerPoints. She gives clicker points during class so it's important to attend every lecture. Extra credit available on MasteringBio homework. 3 tests + a non-cumulative final. Look over the PowerPoints to study and you'll do just fine. Would take again!!
After the horror stories I've heard about bio lab, I was so thankful I took jokinen. unlike the grad students, she knows what shes talking about, and knows how to explain it to her students. Even though the exams are difficult, if you review the lab assignments, her power point lectures, and look at the pictures on the bio lab website, easy A
Very clear lecturer, and goes over things if you don't understand in discussion. She gives 5 exams, but they're pretty easy and give you a lot of opportunities for points.
Professor Jokinen is a great lecturer. She knows what she is talking about. She does TopHat questions that count for participation. Her tests can be tough but if you read the book and take notes and go over them a couple of times before the test, along with her powerpoint lecture notes, you will be more than prepared for the tests.
I took Joking for Bio 101 and 102, and it was a night and day difference. In Bio 102, there is a lot more information to be covered, and she skips a lot of the details during lecture so reading the textbook is a must. 5 tests, mastering homework, and top hat questions are the only opportunities for points. Not bad but not outstanding for Bio 102.
She's a wonderful lecture professor, average lab professor. Gives homework on mastering. Uses Tophat, so go to class or do it from home. Not difficult to do well (90 is an A, 87 is an A-, and so on), but read the book in addition to going over her slides for exams.
I took all of her basic lecture and lab courses, and this is the only one I struggled in. Her grading on practicals is ridiculous, and she gives 6 quizzes (drops one). To put her weighting in perspective, labs are 6 points, quizzes are 12 points, and practicals (3) are 60 points. Would recommend for everything else.
Dr. Jokinen is one of those professors that gives very few points through out the course (and therefore few opportunities to raise your grade significantly). That being said, if you're aiming for an A, make sure do well on all of her exams. The class has 5 exams, worth 40 points each (the course has 240 points total). She is a great lecturer though
She is a very nice person but saying that her lectures are quite dry and hard to pay attention to. She is very monotone most of the time. Her tests are alright. Half are from Easy Note Cards and the other half I have no idea where she gets the questions from. Read the book and do not rely on only the power points. She's the best of the worst profs.
It was a really hard class for me. I studied so much and wasn't able to pass her tests.
The only grades you get are tests and mastering bio homework. she's straightforward of what will be tested. Her lectures can be dry but very helpful. Not an easy A, but you will walk out with the knowledge you need, and if you put in the work of reading the book, listening during lecture, and studying before exam
Nice person, good professor. Make sure to visit office hours if you can, and study the material closely. Not an easy A, but if you put in the work, you can most definitely get one.
Professor Jokinen is very nice and is very knowledgable. I took APBIO and found her tests to be very straightforward and easy. Based on what I've heard about other professors, they're on the easier/ less complex side. She puts out a list of objectives before every test and hw is straightforward on necessary concepts.
I loved Jokinen, her lectures were always clear and she put the powerpoints online so that was nice. Her tests weren't particularly hard, as long as you studied the powerpoints.
Her tests consist of straightforward multiple choice questions based off what is only on the powerpoints. If you listen in class, read the sections in the textbook listed on her powerpoints, and do the homework, then you can easily receive an A in this class. Diane is accessible outside of class and is willing to answer any questions.
I took her for BIOL 101&102 and can say she gets most of her test questions from the textbook. Without reading the chapters and paying attention to lecture slides, you won't pass or won't be able to get a high grade. She's a nice lady and will help you 1:1 but be ready to work hard for the grade you want.
Dr. Jokinen is a very nice and sweet lady who definitely knows what she is talking about. She is very smart but sometimes here instructions can be unclear but she does a good job clarifying the material when need be. Tests/Quizzes can be tough, but make sure to thoroughly go over labs and lecture notes to do well.
Teacher is nice, but her tests were beyond hard and does not seem to want her students to succeed.
Jokinen is a good person. She is the best of the worst. Lectures can get very monotone and boring but if you pay attention, Read the textbook you can get a B (or higher). She is also very strict on rounding and grades 89.5B not an A. Her test can get confusing and hard at times but it's somewhat do-able.
She's a good teacher in my opinion. Lectures can be very boring though, but if you semi-pay attention, do the homework and study the objectives she posts on Sakai it's definitely possible to get an A. She requires Top Hat for participation so even if you don't go to class I recommend still logging in and doing the questions.
Professor jokinen is absolutely my favorite professor Ive had so far! Shes really funny and easy going doesnt give a lot of homework, doesnt give very difficult tests, and doesnt give any quizzes. She is, overall, a great teacher and a great person
Jokinen is an absolute god! It's like having your mom teach you--she laughs at her own jokes and she doesn't EVER give out stupid busy work. She wants you to know the basics and doesn't require you to go into great detail when it comes to many processes. I would absolutely take her again! Loved her class!!
really teaches the material well, even though the content is hard.
Lab is a hard class in general but Jokinen is insanely intelligent that she will explain anything perfectly to you so you can understand it. Took her for both labs.
I loved her! She explains everything very thoroughly and makes class interesting. Participation is important so show up to class and pay attention. Her tests are very hard though so you really need to study hard and make sure you understand everything on her powerpoints.
Great professor. Take her for both 101 and 102 if you can. Tests can be tricky, but if you read the textbook and show up, youll pass for sure.
First of all, her quizzes are very, very straightforward if you studied the material well, and you can be guarenteed 6/6 if you complete your worksheets thoroughly and checked your answers with her and others. The real behemoth is the practicals. KNOW. YOUR. ANATOMY. Make sure to study your dissections well and know your wkst/textbook well.
I love her!! Best bio professor at Loyola I think. She goes over everything in lecture and makes it pretty clear what is on the test. She really knows her stuff and lectures aren't boring. She uses top-hat as attendance so don't skip, and goes over so much in class I wouldn't. She also posts her pps. She wants us to learn and Id take her again 100%
She just knows her stuff. She has a powerpoint presentation, but she adds to it. But just read the book, do the Mastering, answer the top hat questions as best as you can. Don't cheat on the tests and you're ok. Don't be afraid to ask a question. She will not make you feel like an idiot. Discussion really helps too
She is such a great teacher for lab that I am taking her lab course next semester for BIOL 112. She really explains everything explicitly and gives you ways to remember certain slides by giving them funny names (super cute.) You will learn a lot from this class as long as you don't talk during her explanations because she will call you out. LOVE!!!
tests are very straightforward. 5 exams, noncumulative final weighted the same as a test. lectures are very boring, but she explains the concepts very well. basically uses top hat as attendance, but if you're good at taking her tests you can miss a few classes and still end with a very high A.
She is a super nice professor, but her lectures tend to drag on. She knows what she is talking about and tries to keep us involved during class by using Top Hat. She obviously cares very much about biology and her students.
The exams are difficult, even if you study. The lectures are super dry and boring, all she relies on are power points. She also uses Top Hat as participation which can ruin your grade. Overall, would not recommend.
Jokinen explains all of the topics extremely well and is good at informing students what topics will and will not be on the exams. The exams are fairly difficult, but if you study from the lecture slides and mastering biology, you will do well. You should definitely go to class or you will miss Tophat points and not understand the material well!
lectures are very dry, but straight forward. It is an easy A if you just read the textbook, take notes and occasionally go to class. Though, if you do not want to jeopardize participation points i would go.
I loved Dianes class!! I took her for 101 and 102 hardly did any work and received a high A!! She is very nice and her tests are easy! Lectures are a bit boring but its college.
I am currently in Jokinen's class and honestly just read the Bio lab manual and it basically explains everything that we need to know for the quizzes we take every day in her class. And make quizlets!!! They will be so helpful, especially since Bio lab is only once a week. Her class is actually kinda fun once you get used to it. Just stay on task
Jokinen is like any typical bio professor ... Lecture: Heavy, boring but participation does matter Hw: Use quizlet if anything Personality: Can't speak for others but she wasn't the very best when I asked for help regarding my grade. She wasn't as caring as people said she was but for sure find other peers to help out!!!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I hope that a spot opens up in her next class because I really want to take her again. Her powerpoint slides are amazing and really help you understand all of the information and she always answers my questions during class. I definitely recommend for everyone to take her!
It was fine. That's it. The tests weren't that hard, but she was boring. You have to go to class for participation points (you don't really have to, but you should). I got a really high A in the class because she has some extra credit opportunities. I also just don't really like biology. She's definitely not the worst.
There is little room for error, and I really wish her slides were in more detail. Since they didn't leave much detail, it just led me to read a lot more. But overall, she's nice and helpful and if you put the work into it, you'll be fine.
Very middling teacher. Gives good lectures, pretty standard homework, and is all-around very decent. Uses top hot pretty much every lecture
Only take if you will put in the work to read and study. Clear with what she expects you to know for the exam, and there is not a lot of homework each unit. She wants her class to do well and it reflects in her teaching. If you go in for extra help, she is very kind and will clarify any questions you have, even outside of the normal class criteria.
Professor Jokinen is very sweet and intelligent despite appearing unemotional/boring. Read the textbook and attend lectures (for participation points) and the class will be an easy A. Exams were all MC and definitions, no curveballs. If you aren't able to read A LOT, take Duffie. I also took Jokinen for Biol 102 and it was the exact same as 101.
Professor is straight forward in labs and is always ready to answer questions and assist students. Practical exams are very specific in content information and professor does not give out any sort of test prep (other professors do). There are quizzes every week (6 quizzes) and drops the lowest score. She always gives easy full credit on worksheets.
Overall, BIOL 101 with Diane Jokinen was pretty good. She's a really good professor and is super helpful at explaining when you are confused and ask questions. Her tests were decently difficult, but if you put in a few hours of studying then you'll be alright. She's a super sweet person too and is always there if you need to talk to her.
The class was asynchronous but I actually liked that. I was able to work at my own pace, but Professor Jokinen was always available for questions. Her lectures were great for highlighting the most important topics and 'dumbing down' difficult concepts. Tests can be hard but if you study you're fine. Will be taking more of her classes.
Professor Jokinen is very nice and her class isn't extremely difficult. All tests, quizzes, and homework are done on a separate website and there is extra credit included in the homework. The tests however, are veryy different from the homework and quizzes, they are much more difficult and make up 85% of your grade. Not bad, but not the best online
Prof Jokinen is very organized and also an amazing prof. She's accessible outside of class and her zoom meeting were always efficient. She outlines really well in her course what parts of the textbook to read and also what question to go over in the text to review for the exam. She really cares about her students understanding the material!
Seems like a strict prof but is actually really nice and understanding. You get a worksheet every week and she goes over it like helps out with worksheet during class. Have a weekly quiz and a test for every 3 worksheets. Pretty duable class and can get a B or A if you try for sure.
First semester I hated her because I thought she was too tough on us freshman. Second semester was easier. She wasn't my favorite because she doesn't come across approachable. If you don't care to have any relationship with a professor and just need to take this class for a credit take her.
Do not trust the 5 star reviews that people gave her. I took this class trusting the reviews on rate my professors and Ive never regretted something so much. Not only are her tests extremely hard to understand, but her lectures don't make sense. If you even ask her questions during her lectures she easily gets annoyed.
Listen, shes really smart like crazy smart. HOWEVER, if you are not ready to go fast paced then do not go for her. She cranks out slides like no other so if you arent on top of it then youre kinda screwed. She says that her tests arent memorization/vocab based but you need to have it memorized since the test is revolved around that.
she goes so fast for no reason. tries to fit 2 chapters in a day if she can.
The hardest Bio 101 teacher and we only had 5 quizzes the whole semester. You must come to class or you won't pass! And wouldn't recommend unless you truly understand Bio. She moves at the fastest pace out of all the teachers and you will struggle. Literally cried about 5 times while being in this class so difficult.
I absolutely love Dr. Jokinen! First off, she is crazy smart and very passionate about what she teaches, which makes her lectures go by fast. She is super helpful in class and out, and overall a very understanding prof. Besides that, her weekly quizzes are not bad at all, being comprised of almost all multiple-choice questions!
She teaches students like they already know the material. Which for some people, like me, will cause them to struggle a lot. The material went way to fast without the proper guidance of what to expect on the test. There were no quizzes. Shes distant and does not provide much feedback. Not a bad professor but I wouldn't take her for a lecture course
Super specific exams. Be prepared to know every little detail. She seems like she has no emotion either or cares for her students. She is helpful outside of class and gives good explanations. If she was more caring and gave less specific exams she would be 5/5.
Be prepared to never get an A on an exam unless you are extremely well-versed in biology/have background knowledge. She has 5 exams through the course & at first I thought that would be better because each would be short but they all suck. My biggest pet peeve with profs is them trying to trick their students, so I def shouldn't have taken Jokinen
Dont take Professor Jokinen if you dont already have a good understanding of entry level biology. The test questions were extremely complicated and confusing. Compared to other BIOL 101 teachers she barely curved the exams. Jokinen also is very cold and acts like its a burden if you need help.
Would study for at least 12 hours for each exam and would get a 60 percent each time. Tests are nothing like what the power points are like. Chooses to make the questions extremely hard and almost impossible to do well. She teaches the course like we are already graduated with a biology degree and a masters, wayyyyyy to hard for a 101 class!
This was one of the most difficult classes ive taken as a freshman. I spent majority of my time understanding the modules from the presentation and was able to have a clear understanding until the test portion. The test is worded horribly and often times the questions can trick you. Unless you have a good knowledge of bio, dont take this class.
Prof. Jokinen has fast paced lectures and high expectations for her students. However, her lectures and slideshows are very comprehensive and are great to study from. The homework isn't terrible and it has opportunities for extra credit. This is not a lazy class, but you can succeed!!! She gives a great foundation for higher bio classes
Not sure how she is for lab but definitely wouldn't recommend for lecture, especially if you don't have prior solid knowledge of biology. Be prepared to cover up to 50 slides in one class and move extremely fast with little organization & explanatio, just pictures from the textbook on the slides. I can't believe she has so many good reviews on here
Prof Jokinen is a really good professor. Although her lectures are reading off the power point they are very clear. As long as you understand the slides you can do well in this class. Easy A if you memorize the slides. Her tests are MC and she has bonus questions. She uses Mastering Bio. Overall easy A for her class!
Professor Jokinen was pretty good. Grade depends on mastering homework, tophat questions, and exams. She reads off the slides for the most part, but lectures are pretty easy to follow. HIGHLY recommend reading/skimming the textbook to study- she sometimes throws stuff on exams that aren't in the lectures but are highlighted in the book.
You can tell Diane is knowledgeable, but she does not make a good professor. Test are hard, you are sure to not pass. Would not touch her biology class with a 10 foot pole.
Nice professor and always helps when asked questions, but the exams are absolutely BRUTAL. Super specific questions and HEAVY memorization of names. Not even sure how its possible to get above a B even with hours of studying. It's not difficult if you spend probably 20+ hours and memorizing every single detail possible but very pointless.
Not understanding at all. If you get sick, she makes no accommodations, despite the severity. Tests are impossibly hard and grades even harder. All multiple choice and gives no extra credit whatsoever.
Professor Jokinen should not be able to teach a 101 class. She made the material extremely hard and I spent every day trying to study the material just to fail the exams. Her questions are unbelievably hard for no reason and her lectures are not helpful. Take another professor and don't risk your grade.
Her quizzes were fairly easy and overall she knew what she was teaching us. She seems knowledgeable.
I actually really like this class. Way better than Bio lecture bc it's more engaging. The only thing is that you have to take quizzes every week and the quiz is abt the lab the previous week & the lab week that you're taking it, so you have to study for a lab that you haven't even gone over yet. But if you just study you'll do great in the class.
She is a good lab professor, clear about grading, and will go over lab questions during the lab, so if you miss it that's probably on you. The labs are relatively easy, and from what I have heard from others in diff. bio labs she has much easier quizzes. Of course, you need to study for them but if you study you will do good. Great powerpoints too.
You will definitely need to pre read the sections for the almost weekly quizzes, but they are super easy and mostly multiple choice. The exams were a challenge sometimes but overall easy and the labs were easy to fly through if you and your group didn't mess around. She pretty chill most of the time.
