She lectures for the entire class, and it can be a bit boring. Only two tests were the midterm and final. She is a very quick grader, and very straight forward.
Would highly suggest NEVER taking her class. She lectures the death out of you. She's always expecting one correct thought (her opinion) when grading things such as essays. One plus is that she does give you the two essay questions that come on her midterm and final.
First off, just do your homework. And on time! It's up to you to study, she gives you an overview on what will be on her tests, so look that subject up and do a study guide. She gives you feedback on your essays, just learn from it and improve. I'm taking her now and will again for the next history class. History is History. It's work! Study!!!
She is a wonderful lady, we need more people like her in this world for sure. Her class is strictly lecture. Only two tests and four quizzes. You must read for the class to be easy. For the essays, literally rewrite the corresponding chapters from the book and you'll get a perfect score.
Tough grader, lectures you to death, be ready to fail some tests.
This woman teaches directly from the textbook, it's essential that you have it. The tests are impossible, and will destroy your GPA. I was one point from a B and she let me take the C, because when I asked her for help I was refused. Her lectures are long and uninteresting. Her class is hell on earth. Practice self love, don't take her class.
You'll need the textbook. She's a hard grader with the essays and DO NOT use anything else other than your textbook (she will know if you use other resources). Lectures are boring sometimes. Study, study, study !
Terrible teacher. Grades unfairly and only wants her opinion- nothing else. If you don't want to wreck your gpa: DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Don't take her class. Lengthy and fast lectures. Tons of homework and quizzes every weak. Wont let you pass with good grades easily. Not recommended for students.
Very well informed and respectable women, but an insanely hard class. BEWARE!!
This class was rough. Worked hard all semester and barely managed a C.
Incredibly boring, reads off a power-point (which is exactly what is in the book). Material on tests/quizzes are from specific sentences in the book, just read the book and take notes.
Many people claim her class is difficult, but I think they are missing a big point.. All her quizzes, her midterm, and her final use questions that are all found on quizlet. She provides a study guide before the quizzes and exams, so if you find those questions on quizlet and study it, then you'll do fine. She is only a tough grader on documents.
The only real complaint I have is that she has a tendency to talk down to her students. But other than that, all the class is is powerpoints and lectures. She reads from the powerpoints and sends you a study guide for quizzes/exams. As long as you follow the study guide, you'll be fine. The quizzes/exams literally follow the study guide verbatim.
Would not recommend.. Tough grader and does not help students.
If you read the textbook and study for the tests you'll be fine. She's a tough grader on the essays but her tests are exactly like her study guides, including the final. As long as you pay attention in class and do the study guides you'll be fine.
Ms. McEwan is a wonderful person, and extremely friendly, but she's an extremely harsh grader. I loved her as a person, but not so much as a teacher. Still, she's very eager to help and give feedback if you ask her, and she's very flexible and willing to work with her students. STUDY THE TEXTBOOK! You'll have to work for your grade
She is an extremely tough grader. She has more interest in picking out the bad in every submission rather than the good. I do NOT recommend taking her for World History 1.
McEwan is a lovely woman & who loves her job. Her lectures are amazing and she basically gives you the questions she's going to ask you on her quizzes on the study guides she gives (&all the answers can easily be found in the book). The people that say her quizzes are hard, are the ones that don't touch the book. 10/10 would take again!
regardless of how active you are in class or if you turn all your assignments in or not, she will not bump you up even though she says she will at the beginning of the year. I failed this class with a 69.25 and came in person to ask her what I could do and she said she couldnt bump me up. Dont take her class and thank me later.
Although this course is challenging, McEwan is very direct about how she expects assignments to be done. The essays come with specific guidelines. She generously provided study guides for all of her tests, including the midterm and final. Throughout the semester, she emphasized the importance of the book. McEwan is always willing to help.
Shes a good person, she truly cares about you the student. But the moment you slack even to the slightest degree she will put you in your place via grading. She knit picks everything and you have to cater to her. On top of that shes overtly political in her lectures. Which is a good thing, if she wasnt cramming her views down your throat.
Prof McEwan only goes over her powerpoints that she makes in class and gets lost in stories that will never be used on the test. When test time comes, you will find that most of the test material is from the textbook and not her powerpoints. Most of my class is failing. I have been a straight A history student until this Prof.
This was a very hard class. You basically had to copy everything in the book on the essays to do good on them. Every time I asked her for help she would tell me yes and then the next day she would change her mind and tell me that she couldn't. I do not recommend this teacher. It is the worst I have ever done in a history class.
I did well in her US history 2 class only because we had a student instructor who had already taken the class and knew what Mcewan wanted in essays and homework. The tests and quizzes arent bad if you take the list of words she gives you beforehand and find them in the textbook and read the page or paragraphs associated. Good luck!
Study guides are nothing like the test, you basically have to memorize the entire textbook if you wanna pass a test. Extremely picky about your answers for essays or homework. Lecturing is not fun.
I did not enjoy this class and Ms. McEwan made it 10x worse. I have always done well in history courses, except or this one. If you want to pass her exams and quizzes, be ready to read every sentence in your textbook. She is also a very harsh grader on your essays. The class lectures are almost no use for any of the exams. DONT TAKE HER CLASS
If you participate, she'll love you. If you read the textbook, you'll pass easy. She doesn't seem approachable, but go to her office hours and it'll be hard not to like her. Seriously though, read the frickin textbook
She was a tough grader. All of the prompts she uses for the essays are from AP US history exams, but they won't help you because you can only use events that she has discussed in class. Attendance is mandatory, I missed one class because my grandma passed away and when I told her that she told me that wasn't an excuse, she doesn't care at all.
This was a tough course! However, she is always open to help you with anything that you need! Make sure you DO YOUR STUDY GUIDES! Theyre a life saver. If you do good on your essays, youll be fine.
The quizzes and tests are filled with trick questions. I have only ever received one B in all of my high school and college years, except for this class. I received a C in Mrs. McEwan's class because it felt like she wanted us to do poorly. She is a super harsh grader. I failed the midterm and the final.
You most likely won't get higher than a C. I read the text, studied the powerpoints, went to tutoring sessions at least once a week, sometimes twice, did the extra credit opportunities, and still got a C in 2111 and 2112. The content is easy to study and understand but when it comes to quizzes and tests, the questions are ridiculously difficult.
Professor Mcewan is incredibly textbook heavy, which makes her class so difficult. If you do not know the textbook front to back, you will fail. She has a very liberal way of teaching, making it hard to write about any other perspective other than her own or the textbook. Regurgitate the information or don't take this class.
Lecturers straight from her own power points, even though tests are based on textbooks. Don't waste time reading power points. Might as well memorize the textbook for good grades. I didn't do well on quizzes but only got a good grade because of essays and homework.
Attendance is not a grade, but she will mark you absent and keeps that in mind at the end of a semester. She is a tough grader, especially on paper, but once you know what she wants in a paper they become easy! She is a strict teach who at time cannot be helpful, but i did learn a lot.
Although the class itself is understandably difficult as there is a lot of content, Ms. McEwan does a good job of spreading it out and explaining everything. She is knowledgeable and clearly loves the subject. If you pay attention and do your reading, outside work and study guides, youll do well in the class.
The best advice that I could provide is to find another professor to take this course with. She does give you almost all the resources to succeed, but if you do not basically memorize the book you will fail. Also, for the written assignments, if you do not use a certain word or phrase in it your grade on the assignment will decline real fast.
Definitely one of my least favorite classes. Professor McEwan is nice as a person - I can tell. But as a professor, she's very strict and overwhelming. She will definitely lay it to you with the papers (and pick it all apart for an F). The class lectures are REALLY boring. The tests aren't too bad, though. Definitely recommend doing extra credit.
follow study guides, she is a hard grader, way too much course content.
Genuinely miserable class. Doing my absolute hardest to retain the poor grade I have now. Dreadful. Tests are ridiculously hard, no matter how much you study. No sympathy on students because of the pandemic either. Please don't be like me and wreck your gpa by taking this course.
I do not recommend her at ALL. She gives no sympathy to any students whatsoever. She grades extremely hard no matter how hard you worked it doesnt matter. Good luck getting an A on any of the essays. What is nice though is she sends study guides in exact order or test/ quizzes. Class is spent her reading off PowerPoints the whole time.
Do not take this class unless you like hearing all about history and things that are not related to the test. Yes she provides study guides but they are not helpful since she doesnt mention things that are on the study guide. I tried reading the textbook and even that did not help. Her essays are horrible. First failed class ever!
Grades extremely hard on papers. Midterm and final combine to be 50% of grade, so you better do good. On papers, you must write exactly what she wants you to from the textbook, so if your not a mind reader, good luck.
Contender for one of the worst teachers I've ever had. When she grades your essays, it's almost like she takes it personal. Regardless of how hard I try, I will get a stinging three paragraph rant about why my essay was terrible, and it proceeds to crush my grade. Not sure why this woman is still allowed to teach a class.
Very lecture heavy. I feel asleep in her class a handful of times. Hardest essay grade I've ever come across. I did more than the requirements and still received a 65. To do good on any quiz or test, you must memorize the textbook or you will do horrible. I got 40-60's on every quiz and even my midterm because I didn't memorize the textbook.
I took both HIST1112 and HIST2111 from her simultaneously. They are challenging courses for sure. Both classes are in depth and require that you pay attention as well as study. I never thought that I was being graded unfair, but the exams will crush you if don't know the material well. The extra credit paper can make up a lot of your grade.
Her class is very lecture heavy, but it is vital to pay attention to what she is saying. You can make appointments with her for extra help on essays, tests, quizzes, etc. and they are very beneficial. If you show that you are making an effort to do better in her class, she tends to be a little more lenient on your grading. Very kind person overall.
I'm sorry I don't even know she even has a 2.0 rating it should be a 0.6 LECTURES LIKE CRAZY Get ready for red bulls bc you'll need one...
Ms. McEwan is a nice woman outside of class, but when she's teaching she tends to overshare her opinions and often gets behind on class material. She also was very specific with grading, sometimes she would grade a specific way that may not have been on the rubric. I have had all A's in the past and this class was truly challenging to get an A.
This class was frustrating to take. The actual content was not hard, however it was very hard to do well on the quizzes and tests without practically memorizing the textbook. This class was the first C I have ever gotten in a class. If you are taking this class, you need to go over the textbook, not just the lecture. I could not recommend.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had, throughout all of my years of school. All she does are lectures. For her essays, homework, and tests, you have to type her opinion or she will fail you for no reason. She calls people out in class for their bad work in front of everybody and shames the class for bad grades. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Professor McEwan is the strictest grader I have ever known. She gives essays that you have to write from memory on the test and takes as many points off as she can. If you have her drop out now. You won't pass unless you memorize the textbook. So, if you have her good luck... I didn't take these reviews seriously, but they are so true.
You have to read the entire text book and know every single detail and the quizzes are so vague
Assessments are based on the book, and she spends every class reading her own PowerPoint. This history teacher also has no problem teaching her opinion as fact (affects grading) and openly making personal attacks on groups & students with differing viewpoints. Save your time/money/GPA and take the class with a history teacher that teaches history.
Definitely do not recommend taking her. Shes an incredibly harsh grader and does not bump at all. Her tests and quizzes are very difficult and she gives lots of homework.
I want to start off by saying I have never failed a class up until this class. This professor does nothing but read off a PowerPoint she made years prior, and the study guides are so broad you have to know every single detail about a topic to pass the quizzes and tests. She also never responds to emails. Would not recommend.
Terrible terrible professor. Sticks to the text book religiously while occasionally providing information in the power points that are NOT in the book. She provides no rubric for any of the writing assignments or essays and only gives brief comments of their guidelines ONCE in class. Study guides are vague and borderline useless at times. DROP HER.
Professor McEwan would give out "study guides" for all quizes and tests but the information given on the study guides would be extremely vague and when asked to elaborate she'll just tell you to read the book and the tests would focus on tiny details that aren't made clear in the book, PowerPoints or lecturers. Shes also a very inconstant grader.
I saw someone else on here say that they had never failed a class up until this one. The same can be said for myself. None of the material she provides is useful or relevant for the tests or essays. She will ask someone what they think about a topic in class and will tell the student they're wrong if their opinions simply do not align with her own.
This professor is religious to the textbook. If you stray off at all then you will fail your assignment. The study guides were very broad, only providing vocabulary terms. If you study a lot you will do well but it is a challenge. One good thing I can say about the professor is you can go to her office and she will help you with assignments.
Ms. McEwan is one of the best history professors I have ever had throughout my entire school career. She is definitely lecture heavy, but as long as you pay attention and take good notes, you will absolutely do fine in this class. She provides extremely helpful feedback, as she clearly cares a lot about her students success. I will take her again!!
I actually liked her. She was definitely tough. Everyday was a lecture. Quizzes came STRAIGHT from the textbook (word4word). 3 papers (one extra credit) but you MUST write them exactly how she wants. TIP: go see her before each one! Show her you want to put in effort! We really made a connection towards the end. I know she wanted the best for me.
Not fun at all, bro. I watched rocket league highlights the entire time because I was trying to get to diamond rank. unfair grader never consistent. you have to go to the outside of class sessions to get the A to know what she wants.
I took her for 1111 and did one day of 1112 and realized I could not do it again. She tried clicking something on a slide but didn't know how, on accident, she deleted the link. I was so frustrated and I already knew that the work load was gonna be as bad as 1111 so I dropped after day 1. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Long powerpoint lectures that dont connect with tests or quizzes in the slightest. She expects you to read almost the entirity of the textbook just to get through the quizzes and understand classwork. Lots of essays with very niche topics that she grades very harshly. No phones in class and hard to contact outside of school. DONT TAKE HER CLASS
She just reads from the PowerPoints
She reads from a PowerPoint EVERY SINGLE DAY. Her grading is the toughest. After tests, you have to stay to begin the next chapter. Study guides are vague and are not very helpful. She is a little passive-aggressive in her comments about your grades and why you received them.
This is genuinely the hardest class I have ever taken. I have never seen someone grade so harsh. It is absolutely necessary to read the textbook or you most definitely will not pass. It is a power point every single day and she does not put much information on assignments online so attendance is mandatory.
Lecture heavy
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. Finished with a 69.9 and she REFUSED to bump it. She said, "maybe you should've done better on the extra credit." This class was torture. I never write reviews, so please do not take this class.
Just finished History 2111 with her. I feel like I did truly learn in her class, but she is a tough grader. The quizzes and tests are extremely difficult and hard to study for. I am a straight A student and thought I could handle her class. DON'T DO IT!! Dual Enrollment students please just take the class at your school it's not worth it.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She makes you study the textbook like theres no tomorrow. Study guides are vague, she looks for very specific stuff from the textbook on your tests and quizzes. Take her if you like spending hours each night reading the textbook and studying just to get a 75 because your answer wasn't the one she wanted
As a dual student history had always been one of my strongest subjects, but this class is hands down the hardest class i've ever taken. Her class is very lecture based but nothing talked about in lectures is on quizzes, test, or important for your essays. You must read the textbook in order to pass this class!!!
I could not handle her class for my life. She is the harshest grader I have ever come across. The majority of my class were students who have to retake her class, because she failed them. If you do not write or submit details or certain things, in her opinion, that are right she will fail the activity.
Vague study guides. Harsh grading. Difficult to access outside of class if you have a busy schedule. She carries a generally indifferent attitude. Beware of the standalone essays and final exam essays.
Ms.McEwan is extremely vague in the study guides she provides. I politely asked if she would mind putting the study guide in order she became annoyed and said "I don't have to give you a study guide I already put them in order", after showing her the email to show her it wasn't she scoffed in my face saying "idk idk" and walked away.
I do not like the way she grades assignments nor the way she grades essays. I'm also not a fan of how she teaches her lectures and her class can be boring at times. I do not recommend taking her class because she will give you low grades because she is so picky about the way you answer or write assignments.
She can be a sweet lady but a horrible professor. I knew I could not pass her class, so I withdrew. She's a rough grader, and nothing is good enough for her. Truly watch out when you decide to take this course. I would recommend another teacher.
I have a love/hate relationship because she was really kind, but super conservative about teaching. I took thorough notes, attended class frequently and studied, but found it difficult to get over a C on her quizzes/papers.
I took this class after looking at the rate my professor's rating. Throughout high school & halfway through my semester, I had a 4.0 GPA. At the end of my semester, I had all A's besides her class. She claims that the tests & assignments are based on the textbook... Lies! Overall she does not care about her students, HORRIBLE teacher. DON'T RISK IT
I took her my first semester of college, before then I was an all A student and graduated with honors. After taking her class I received the first C I have ever gotten in my life. She claims that everything is in the textbook but it's not true! If your interpretation of the text does not match to hers she will fail you. DO NOT RISK IT!
She only reads from her slides. Has us read 50+ page chapters almost every week just so we can still somewhat understand what's going on. Every document and essay of h
Although she sends out study guides for the quizzes/exams with all the points, the points on them are too broad to study effectively. She can be nice but she's mostly condescending. I have worked more for her class than any of my other classes and her class is still my lowest grade. My class's average for the midterm was 63. Save time, don't take.
She allows and encourages discussions in class and is really nice. She sends out study guides that make studying very easy since the topics listed are easy to find in the textbook and she doesn't give much homework.
I am a history lover but she as a professor has made me hate this class and her as a professor. Her tests are really hard and can tank your grade. Her essays are crazy. I would completely avoid her at all costs if I were you
Everything comes right out of the textbooks (not her lectures), she does release study guides before every quiz which makes it easier. Worst part is that the Midterm and Final (combined) are 50% of the class. Overall she's really nice and understanding and if you have good attendance she will round your final grade up. (From a Dual Enroll student)
Do not take this class with this professor. She grades extremely difficult and is rude. She says everything comes from the textbook but it does not. Every test is very difficult to get higher than a C because she grades so harsh. Would not recommend this teacher.
I took this class and every quiz and exam were scantrons she also gives you everything that will be on the test beforehand and in the two instances of essay questions she includes the exact questions in the study guide. willing to help you make sure you have everything that you need as long as you ask her for help and are respectful.
if i could rate lower i would
She will call on you. Lectures all class start to end from a powerpoint. She is a good teacher but quizzes and tests don't align with the notes taken in class. Though Quizlet has good study guides for tests and quizzes. Need a normal amount of effort to pass the class. Maybe a little more than average though this is my worst subject.
I have never failed a class before taking this one. All she does is read from her slides and when tests come up the study guide is so vague that you have no clue what you're supposed to be studying. Also, there are 3 essays along with 6 documents to read and respond to, which are very hard since she doesn't grade fairly. Avoid her at all costs!!
Not respectful to students especially if they deviate from her precious textbook wildly fluctuating grading standards
GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS she will give you a study guide before every quiz and if you fill it out and go to office hours she will tell you if it is right or wrong. Same goes with before an essay is due she will read it and tell you what to change. Do not be discouraged by the bad ratings take her class and participate and you will do well.
Grades extremely strictly on the essays, and the study guides provided are so vague you're basically left with no clue what to study. The questions on the tests and quizzes related to the study guide are extremely specific. Reads off a PowerPoint the entire class too
At first she seemed a little intimidating but when I needed help in the class and came during her office hours she was really sweet and kind. If you are struggling in her class stop by her office and go over the study guide with her your grade will improve drastically. Make sure you do the extra credit and essays as those are easy grade boosters.
She is a very harsh grader; if you ask a question she goes in circles and never really answers the question; quizzes and tests are difficult and the questions on them do not relate to what we learn; talks a lot about her own political opinion in class. Generally a nice lady, but save yourself some trouble and take the class with someone else.
Professor seems fed up with her job. She places importance on little details and has answer choices that both seem right, but one is wrong due to a minor technicality. Her quizzes have few questions so it doesn't take many wrong answers to fail.
Do not take her class, it's best to take another history class with another teacher. Best way to describe her is that She acts like it's a hassle to teach, way too strict on her essays, quizzes, and exams. Although, in her office hours she gives feedback and is nice at times, her feedback does not make sense. Also, she took away the study guides!!!
Awful, i prayed i would get in a car crash every day before school so i wouldn't have to go to class. If your not religious you better find one and start praying because you are going to need it.
She is good if your nerdy for history. She hates late students and constantly gave the class lectures about students who were late. She can get very just irritated. Besides that just read for class and you should be fine. She also reads slides
