Class is pretty boring, but you don't really do anything. The test are somewhat hard, but you do get a cheat sheet, so it isnt that bad.
Nice professor, but class is very boring and you have in class assignments almost everyday, but if you go to class everyday you will do okay. Test are pretty hard, but you get a cheat sheet and can do extra credit questions.

boring class but she is fun
Class was incredibly boring. The lecture is pretty much just read right off the slides which are also available on her website. Tests are not easy but you get to use a cheat sheet and also turn in up to 6 extra credit questions with each test
she is funny in a weird way. not a hard class, especially compared to the other teachers for BIO. I highly recommend her. Go to class, make a cheat sheet for the tests, and do the extra credit!
Good teacher. Always will make time for you should you have problems. Hard tests but lots of ways to make an A or B in class (extra credit, group work, cheat sheets etc.) Take her, you'll be glad you did!
This is usually the most important thing with Freshman Bio: Yes, the lecture actually pertains to the tests, for the most part.
boring class. talks to me like i'm stupid. lots of extra credit, but has turn-in assignments during every class so you HAVE to go to every class which is a pain in the ass.
Most boring professor ive had. shes a little quirky too
Best science professor I've had. But you have to meet with her in person after or before class to get on her same wavelength. Otherwise she is very cool, very intelligent, and I learned alot from her, she also gives good career advice.
I wanted to shoot myself in this class, not because of her, but because it was SO boring. She is definitely the best professor to take for this class though. GO TO CLASS, make the cheat sheet for the tests, study, and do the extra credit!Take her for Bio!
You have to go to class everyday b/c she has you turn in work for a grade. She is a cool lady and a fair teacher. Lectures were a little boring but overall the class was fine.
good professor... the class sometimes gets boring but I've heard she is the best professor of the ones who teaches Bio105. She gives extra credit a lot and puts her gradebook online. Make sure you keep up with the gradebook though because she forgot to grade me on a few assignments.
Melroy knows her stuff, and I have heard she is the best BIO 105 professor. Go to class, because there is classwork every class. That is a big part of your grade. Do the extra credit cuz the tests are sometimes difficult. All in all, this class aint that bad...and I hate science.
Gives you study guides...but you gotta go to class, classwork counts the most in the grading scale. It's pretty easy tho. She also gives extra credit and a cheat sheet for all her tests.
Professor Melroy is awesome! She gives cheat sheets and extra credit questions for all her tests. Make sure you go to class though- she gives groupwork everyday.
VERY BORING class. she is very hard to stay awake to but very nice. will help you however she can (stays late, etc.) gives extra credit and allows many opporunities to boost your grade.
This was a very boring class, but she is a nice lady though. She is willing to help you with the group work she gives every class.
I hate bio, but I got a B+. Take her! she gives awesome fill-in the blank notes, cheatsheets for tests, extra credit and a book report that everyone I knew that did it got full credit! She's a character-you must attend class she gives class activities that will fail you if you are not there to do them! Cool lady
I had to take this course as a requirement for both basic studies AND my major (Psych), and beforehand, I wasn't looking forward to it. However, Dr. Melroy really did a great job, and everyone has an opportunity to get a good grade. Very straight forward and everything you need to know is on the site. Plenty of extra credit opportunities as well

All Melroy does is sit in her office and eat honey and soy sauce... and probably some cheese, who knows. She looks like Filbert from Rocko's Modern Life. But hey, at least she's full of "interesting factoids"
This lady gives the hardest tests in the world....first test I studied for 11 hours and made a 58...2nd test I studied for like 2 hours and made a 70....no way to study, too much material on every test....
not a fun class, hardtests.but she posts lect outlines that have "fil inthe blank" so its easy to take notes.for every test u can get up to 5XC pts by answering easy essay questions.prepare for studyin all night bc her study guides are 10-13 pgs.but final is optional and can only help your grade.ima psych major but stil made a 90 and 95 onthe2 tests
Not a bad teacher, just a bad subject. There are a lot of notes but she posts them online for you to read and study and puts sample tests online with a bunch of the acctual tests questions on it. Just study and it isn't too hard!
The tests are pretty tough but there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Group work can really help your grade, if you go to class.
Dr. Melroy was an awesome teacher.
Make sure you go to class because if you don't, group work will really mess up your grade (I learned the hard way)! I took AP Bio in high school and here test are just as freakin hard. I studied more for the 2nd test and did worse than the first. She's not that bad of a teacher but you're in a very big class. Also, go to lab.
She's not a bad teacher...sure it's a lot of information you're responsible for learning but she trys to make it as interesting as possible. I suggest taking this class w/ a friend so whenever you're not there your friend can write your name on the group work. You have a lot of extra credit opportunities and group work so it's really not that bad.
Make sure you go to class because of group work, which is a breeze, and tons of extra credit (do it it really pulls up your grade!) Not very helpful, but good lecture with power points and you just fill in the blanks on your printed out notes! :o)
Worst teaching methods in the world. She gives you a number of print outs with tons of info you have to know for the test. she lets you make a cheat sheet for the test which is good, but just really ineffective when it comes to teaching. you can just study the handouts and not go to class, but she has mandatory attendance. take her if you must
Pretty boring and you must be there every day because there is group work to turn in daily. She posts handouts for you to bring to class and fill in the blanks. Lets you use a cheat sheet for the test. She's alright.
She is a very boring teacher, basically reads your notes outloud in class. Tests are fairly straightforward but you have to do the study guide, usually about 130 questions. If you have to take bio, she's decent, but bring something to class to keep you occupied.
you may sleep through class, all she does is read her notes which are online but you do groupwork in class for a grade 5 pts each day. just study the practice test for midterms and you will do fine..its basically the same thing but test are only 25 questions not 120, don't worrie
Really bad class not worth the B that you will get it really is the worst experience of my life, academically
she's not as bad as people make her out to be. it's just the class is so hard how interesting can she be. her tests are really hard and definitely do the practice exams before you take the tests. you have to go to class because she gives class work everyday and that's how she keeps attendence, but it boosts you grade so do it. take notes!
She's not all that bad. I took the clas over the summer, so the format was a bit different. The truth is it's not a class for slackers, unfortunately for then it's most likely a require course. During the summer there is a quiz at the beginning of every class on the reading and group word during lecture. All the points are worth coming to class for
Science is definitely not my thing but I managed an A- in the class. There's group work everyday, so attendance is mandatory. The class is kind of boring, she uses power point slides that you can print off the internet. The tests aren't too bad as long as you study for them and do the practice questions. She also offers extra credit.
BORING! I made an A on every single test but missed three labs and ended up with a B in the class. Moral: don't miss labs! She does group work everyday so attendance is a must. She understands that everyone is in there b/c it's a requirement. Allows cheat sheet on exams. Don't buy the text book, you don't need it! I sold mine back b4 the 2nd week.
This class sucks. Its super hard. You have to study a ton for the tests. DOn't buy the book, all the test questions are from the notes. Also, you have to go to class everyday because there's groupwork everyday. And this class is exceedingly boring.
She doesn't take attendance, but you do group work everyday so you have to go. Allows cheat sheets on tests and extra credit. The lectures can be really boring though.
Don't buy the book for the lecture. Midterms are hard but if you study the example midterms she gives you then you are bound to make a C or higher. You have to attend each class because there is group work for every class. Lab attendance is mandatory because you have a quiz at the beginning of every class plus in class work. Not an easy A.
Don't waste your money on a book. You need one for the lab but not for the lecture.
If you have to take Biology, try to aviod taking it with her. Her teaching is not the best, and she doesn't explain anything you ask her. She will just answer as yes or no. I did actually use my book, but everyone is different. This class is not an easy A. You must attend both the lab and the lecture, because there is a quiz EVERYDAY. You cannot ma
Dont buy a book for 105. All you really need to do to get an A is study the online study guides before the tests. Don't waste all night making that cheat sheet that she allows you, you will barley use it. Just do the online tests! and if you have time while cramming, go over the notes you fill in the blank on (also can be found online)
Allows cheat sheets on test however you'll not really look at it. The tests are tricky but if you read both the online notes and test you're nearly guaranteed atleast a C. Also, she has group works everyday but if you have a friend sign your name you can get by without going.
I am NOT a science person, but I still have a B+ in this class. As long as you go to class for the group work and study the practice exams you will have no lower than a C. But she also gives tons of extra credit which is what boosted my grade up. I definatly recommend her, shes really helpful!
If you just go to class, you will definitely pass with at least a C. She gives group work every day which counts as a quiz but is very very easy stuff and she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I would definitely recommend taking her. If you are like me and just needed to take BIO for basic studies requirements, this is the teacher to take.
I mean it is an easy class especially if you just have to take it for basic studies. But she is not helpful and really wierd.
Her class is not that hard. She gives group work every day for attendance and that sucks but other than that it's pretty easy if you take notes in class.
Insensitive and sarcastic. Her lectures are dreadfully boring, but daily class work grades and extra credit will boost up your grade. I hated this class, but I'm pretty sure she is the only teacher for 105.
booring. longest hour and 15 minutes ever. BUT she doesnt take attendance you just have group work so if you get someone to go for you every other class and you write eachothers names on your groupwork then she'll never know. tests are multiple choice but youll probably do worse on them than you think. and don't buy a text book but get the lab book
Class is boring but then again, I'm not a science person. She can be difficult to get in touch with ("Stop sending me all these questions by email, I have a life!") but she does offer A LOT of extra credit opportunities. If you need a life science for basic studies, Melroy is probably the way to go. She's pretty decent.
This class is taught in an auditorium, so attendance is not mandatory. Her teaching is very dry, but she is very smart and knows her stuff. She is not the greatest help outside of class, but she is very clear when teaching. Small, easy class assignments are easy grade boosters. Cheat sheets on tests are allowed, but STUDY! You'll do ok if you try!
I learned alot in this class. She gives you all the notes n teaches off of a powerpoint. All u have 2 do is fill in the blanks on the notes as u go. Kept is interesting by giving side stories/examples apart from whats on the powerpoint. Easy class overall. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Group work and tests were the only grades + any extracred
Goes to fast on the slides. Hate her voice. Just reads from the slides, which arent online, just fill in the blanks. She makes you wanna not come to class.
Very boring class. the only reason to come is for group work, other than that its pointless. gives extra credit every week and for tests. dont buy a textbook, theres an online one!
Okay, so here's the deal. Easy class, not a great teacher. Boring. Tests are somewhat difficult, but she gives you a study guide for it. You can pretty much make a low C/high D on your exams but if you do your extra credit, opt articles, and come to class you can come out with a B. Not bad.
quit whining! this class was EEEEASY! i didn't do any of the oprional articles or extra credit, just attend, fill in the blanks, spend about an hour making a cheat sheet before the tests and you're good to go. Freshmen have no idea how easy they have it in this class...
Well if u go to class u can count how many terrible jokes she makes. 5 points everyday ur in attendance. so u cant miss much. Honestly chances of self afflicted injury increase when u take this class.
One of the most boring classes ever. Half the people are on facebook. Goes over slides to fast. Hard to actually take notes. Notes she puts online are pointless.
Awful all around.
Dr. Melroy's bio class is the easiest bio class offered. she designed it for non majors who are just taking it for a basic study. There are 3 tests that you need to study for but you can get 5 points extra credit on each test. It's bio so it isn't super exciting, but from what i've heard of the other professors, she's definitely the easiest.
quite possibly the easiest biology class you could take. you dont need a book and she puts all the notes online. attendance is graded but just get over it and go. she offers a ton of extra credit, this class should be an easy A if you just do your work and go to class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. She has no idea what she is doing; she is rude and condescending, and could care less about the students. Massive amount of work and no outside help or extra credit at all (except for curves on tests that everybody fails disguised as extra credit). Avoid at all costs.
Awful!!!! I've never seen such a pointless professor before!!! Don't take her class as a basic study!!!!
Oh dear Lord. This is my lab instructor this year for Biology. She is terrible! She is completely unclear about what she wants accomplished by the end of the lab, she babbles on the entire time and uses vocabulary we don't know, like we do know it. DO NOT TAKE HER LAB SECTION.
Oh my god. I aws psyched for this class becuase all my other professors are awsome, they are really good at what they do and they are enthusiastic about the subject. THIS lady wouldn't answer my questions with a straight answer, had no useful or helpful information and expected us to do and know things we weren't informed about. Get someone else. K
She's an easy teacher. Yes sometimes she is hard to understand, but the work is EASY. She GIVES you the notes (fill in the blank)to print online and gives you extra credit work that's not mandatory. Attend class because she gives random in-class assignments sometimes. I find myself not having to worry outside of this class- so quit fussin'!
Although Biology is the worst, she makes it bare-able. She gives tons of extra credit opportunities and basically free 100's just for showing up to class. She understands that everyone in her class is just fulfilling a basic requirement.
Stay away. Melroy will not help you if you have a question and everyday there is group work in class that is graded and hurts your grade. The tests are extremely hard too.
Stay away. Melroy will not help you if you have a question and everyday there is group work in class that is graded and hurts your grade. The tests are extremely hard too.
Tests are killer. They seem easy and you even get to make a cheat sheet yet you always somehow landing your grade in the 60's-80's. DO THE OPTIONAL ARTICLES! It's the only way you will survive the class. As for the lectures, super boring. Notes are provided online yet you still have to attend (class work). I wish I was more interested...
STAY AWAY! This is one of the worst Bio classes that I have ever taken. She always jokes about her microphone not working yet she still does nothing to fix it. This makes it very hard to focus. This doesn't even begin to describe the class though. She does nothing to make the material easy to understand. Although she gives you the notes, stay away.
So so so boring. Attendance is mandatory. Didn't open my book or listen in class... WRITE DOWN EVERY QUESTION FROM THE SAMPLE QUESTIONS ONTO YOUR CHEAT SHEET. That's the only way I made an A in the class.
HORRIBLE!!!!! never once used the book. attended every class and took notes for the first text. bombed that. copy all the sample questions and you should make it out of there with at least a C
worst. teacher. ever. but i had to take the class. do optional articles, thats the only way i passed. study the sample questions and put them on your cheat sheet, thats were the test questions come from. the powerpoints will be put online and she puts the notes online also.
Worst Bio Class Ever. She talks down to you, runs thru useless notes too fast, then slams you with ridiculous tests. If you have to take Biology, avoid at all costs.
Melroy is really not that bad. As long as you go to every class, do exam extra credit and the optional articles you can get an A even if you're not a science major. There's no excuse for not doing well in her class, she gives you plenty of opportunities to do well and improve your grade. Exams are taken off sample questions she GIVES you.
I hate biology and somehow I have a B or B+ in her class. She gives extra credit each week and for each test. She gives practice questions before each test and at least half of them are on the test making it much easier. If you need to take bio, i would take her.
she posts all notes online so you can sleep in class, gives you study guides that are a good 50% of the test word for word, weird teacher,as long as you pay attention and do the study guides you are golden, lots of extra credit (for the last exam she offered 20 points)
Anyone who thinks this class is hard isn't trying at all. You barely have to write anything for notes bc she puts them online for you. All you have to do to study for tests is read the notes and do the practice tests bc some questions are the same on the exams. She gives extra credit too. I'll admit the class was super boring but easy if you try.
eh wasn't a big fan. attendance was mandatory because you do classwork assignments that are worth 5 points participation. gives fill-in notes. 3 tests. allowed to make a cheat sheet, but never know what to put on it. gives extra credit and extra assignments that help. gives a practice test before test, but those questions never seem to be on test..
Professor Melroy wasn't all that bad. Her tests are a little challening, but she does allow you to create a cheat sheet. All notes and powerpoints are only, but class is mandatory because you do in-class assignments. She seems a bit air-headed at times, but she's really a nice lady. Class is boring, but as long as you study, it's not difficult.
Anyone who says this class is hard is being ridiculous! Tests are tough but she let's you make a cheat sheet and do extra credit. She gives you group work each day (super easy) which adds on points, never deducts. Would definitely recommend if you need a basic bio! Passing with at least a B is a peice of cake.
Hard class, but relatively easy to get a good grade with fill in the blank notes, classwork, extra credit, and cheat sheets for tests. Lecture is boring bc she talks like a cute little monotone mouse. The class was mandatory for my basic studies, but I probably wouldn't take her again. However, do your work, and you'll do fine..A/B for sure.
This class is sooooo easy. Go to class and fill in the notes she gives you. Do the assignments in class. Study for tests. How could someone fail this class? If I had a dollar for every time she complained about her microphone not working I'd be a millionaire!
I dont know why she's not rated higher. Yes, she's a little boring but she is sweet & loves to teach! Lots of group work. Tests are easy as long as you look over slides & use the practice tests she puts online! I'd reccommend this this for basic studies, she's the easiest bio professor at the school.
She taught my Biology 202 lab section and she is TERRIBLE. She is so picky about the most insignificant things. During lab, she answers any questions in the most incomprehensible sentences she can manage. The entire lab is usually lost as to what is going on and what we are supposed to be looking for. I never hope I have to have her for lecture.
Had here for intro to bio and it was a cake walk. Fill in the blank notes, cheat sheet on tests, class work, extra credit every week, optional final to help your grade, puts the notes up every week. One thing is you get a lot of points from showing up through the class work; it cushions your grade. I never studied for tests but my friends had to.
She is such a sweet lady and tries really hard to make it interesting for the students, I loved her and she made Biology my favorite class of the semester after hating it prior. Definitely take her, she gives lots of extra credit assignments and the only assignments are tests. :)
Easiest Bio class I have ever taken. She is a boring lecturer, but take her! Easy A with a little effort. 3 exams, final is optional (will replace lower exam grade). Weekly optional article assignments for credit. Up to 5 extra credit points for every test. One page cheat sheet for each test. Don't buy textbook. She gives detailed notes to fill in.
extremely boring lecturer but must go to class to get group work credit for attendance. posts study guides online before test, and half the questions are on there. posts slides but some are ridiculously long its hard to go over them. pretty easy to memorize things before test but also not that difficult to actually learn.
A little boring but not a bad class. Go to class because there are small assignments every day. Her notes are fill in the blank. She posts sample tests with answers and you can use a cheat sheet on the test. There are also opportunities for extra credit. My only issue with her was her strong belief against creationism. God is our Maker!
Attendance is mandatory towards your grade. Tests are DIFFICULT! She allows you a cheat sheet but the amount of information that she needs you to retain for the test is so vast. Do all of the extra credit work to bring your grade up. Don't even bother taking the optional final...
She tries to make the lectures at least somewhat interesting. Allows 1 page cheat sheet for tests. Sometimes in class work so make sure you go! Optional extra credit weekly that is pretty simple. Definitely glad I'm taking her course.
Let's just say that I learned more about biology in Dr. Temple's physical anthropology class than her biology class. Overall, she's not a terrible teacher, just very dry. She's sweet though.
She offers a lot of ec but her tests are hard... 5 pts for showing up everyday is nice... definitely take the practice tests
She is very sweet but I hate science. If you have to take BIO I recommend her. She gives three test and an optional final. My advise: do all the connect extra credit work she will add 5 pts. to your test, do all the optional articles my grade went from a C to a B because I did these articles, take the final it will replace your worst test grade.
Nice teacher. Takes attendance through daily class work. I would recommend going to class just because the classwork will help your grade. Easy class. Do the study guides. All slideshows go on blackboard. Do not need book, at all.
Very nice lady. Tests are extremely hard! Definitely do the practice tests as soon as they are posted. Teaches off of Powerpoint slides but does not post them until she has lectured. Gives out handout notes, however. STUDY THEM EVERYDAY.
This class really isn't impossible!! I'm horrible at science, but because of Melroy's classwork and extra credit opportunities I did really well. She's not the most positive teacher, but she gives you chances to raise your grade all the time, and the tests are super manageable if you study the practice tests and make a good cheat sheet!
I did not show up for a single class this semester and she grades attendance at 20% so I'll probably pay for that. Do well in the lab, we had a good TA for ours. She uses the same lectures (same notesstudy guides from year to year) and the tests can be tough, some have questions you have never covered. Apparently not even in lectures
Melroy is unhelpful, borderline rude, and just outright boring. The class itself is easy enough if you go to class and do all assigned work. Class work in every lecture, online hw, 3 tests and an optional cumulative final. She goes through her ppts too fast at times and is not likely to go back if you ask. Go, study, and you should get through.
This was a tough online intro class. Each week, read powerpoints (200 screens long), read chapter, take quiz, do a lab, extra credit is hardly worth doing as it takes too long for 1 extra point. Would not recommend this professor to anyone, at least not for an intro class. She acted like it was a level 300 or 400 class with the amount of work.
She is a good teacher, kinda boring though. She talks the entire class period and pretty much just reads the PowerPoint (which she posts online afterwards). Within PowerPoint are questions that you answer and turn in daily for grading (how she takes attendance). Can bring cheat sheet for every test, including final (3 tests and optional final).
Make sure you come to class because each day is worth 5 points. The homework due before the test is long, but you have at least a week to complete it. Try to just buy the access code without the book if you can. Lectures are kind of boring, but most of the material is cool to learn about. She gives extra credit.
Professor Melroy's class is not hard, but it can be extremely boring. Her lectures are read straight off the power point which are uploaded online too. She uploads fill-in-the-blank notes on blackboard for lectures. The exams are not too hard and you can bring a cheat sheet for all of them, even for the final. Don't buy the book; you won't need it.
This class was organized SOOOO POORLYYYY . The answers in the homework is impossible to find because the book and the ebook are of NO HELP AT ALL. Its not even like the questions themselves were complicated questions, the resources provided to search for the answers to not provide the answers.
Very easy class. Tons of extra credit. Minimal homework. You get a cheat sheet for every test and the practice tests she provides are very similar to the real tests. BUT there is class work every class so if you're not there it is 5 points off your grade.
Super boring lectures, but they're all online. Exams are a little harder than you would expect, but overall really easy bio class if you're not majoring in it.
She's not bad, but she's boring and thinks people who don't understand her questions are basically dumb. She lets you have a cheat sheet for tests which is a life savor and there is extra credit opportunities. Every night before class you're required to read over slides and take a quiz - not hard, but annoying.
She basically reads off the slides for the entire class without giving any kind of individual attention. Then expects you to do well on the tests. My advice: start studying a few days in advance to really get the materials down. The sample exams barely help if any
Pretty easy to get an A for a non-bio major. She reads off the powerpoint the entire time so lectures are pointless. You can bring a whole page cheat sheet for every test (3 tests). There are online quizzes due before each class which are also easy. She offers extra credit for each test too.
The material is difficult, but she does try to make it more simple. It's a lot of work; homework every week, lab quizzes, and the tests are miserable, but she's willing to work with you if you need it. She also offers extra credit opportunities, and saw students were doing poorly on quizzes, and switched the layout. Good professor given the course.
I didn't really like the way this class was structured. Before every class we were required to read a powerpoint (often 100+ slides) and take a quiz. Attendance was mandatory. Tests were pretty difficult some of the questions were never covered. In addition, we never got the correct answers to quizzes and tests which kind of defeats the purpose.
Her lectures are super long because she reads off 100+ slides word for word. The quizzes (which are considered homework to do before class) are confusing and not helpful. The tests are tough but do the practice tests and extra credit and you should be fine.
Lectures are extreeeeeeemely long feeling. She basically just reads off of a power point and you have to answer questions during it. Quizzed every day before classes and tests are super hard. 2/10 stars, would not recommend.
She gives powerpoint notes and then lectures from the powerpoint.
Shes a horrible lecture professor
Pretty easy class. She gives you the slides she will speak from before class. You have a quick quiz on those due before class starts. During lecture she has classwork questions you must answer. Turn those in at the end of lecture. Three midterms (last one during finals). Use her sample exams!! Pretty bland lecturer, but she's helpful. You'll be ok.
The only reason going to class is beneficial is to do the for-grade classwork. She just reads the powerpoint she posted before class and doesn't give any new information. Her tests will kill you, even with the cheat sheet she lets you have. Look at the practice exams or be great at bio if you want to excel in this class.
Melroy is easily the most boring professor at UNCW. Every lecture is a 70-110 slide powerpoint that you have to memorize entirely if you want to pass the tests. She barely does anything, be prepared to teach yourself the entire class. Before every class you take a quiz online that you don't get the answers to afterwards. So be ready to learn nothin
Maybe not the most thrilling professor ever but if you bother to listen she knows what shes talking about. Required quizzes before every class but I actually found them to be very helpful .
PROFESSOR MELROY KNOWS HER STUFF, BUT SHE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW IT AFTER SHE'S ONLY EXPLAINED IT ONCE. SHE LECTURES DIRECTLY FROM THE POWERPOINTS AND THERE ARE QUIZZES AND CLASSWORK DUE EACH CLASS.
Stay away. She just reads from a PowerPoint for the entire lecture, but you have to go to get a class work grade. Big waste of time going. You will have to teach yourself the class if you want to pass. There is extra credit and a cheat sheet for each test, but the tests are brutal. She makes you feel very dumb if you don't know her questions too.
She was one of my worst professors. She knows very little about bio and her tests are extremely hard. Theres only 2 test so if you do bad say goodbye to your GPA. She reads directly from the power point that you already had to read for homework and barely teaches anything. I would not recommend her to anyone. I gave her a 1 because I cant give a 0.
She is one of the worst professors at UNCW. She just gives you slides to look at for every class and basically expects you to have gone through all sometimes 100+ slides and know everything for that chapter. She gives you plenty of grades, but her tests are next to impossible!! Her sample exams are easy, but are nothing compared to the actual exam!
We had to analyze 2 articles in her class using a series of questions she's written out. Took me over an hour to do one (horribly boring too) and since the last 2 questions were just opposites of each other I was able to answer them in one, so I combined them. She didn't like that and gave me a 0% on the entire thing.
We have to review the slides and take a quiz before every class meeting, just to go to class and look at the same powerpoint. Super pointless. Just reads off the slides every class meeting. Also claims that practices like acupuncture are fake?? Goes off on tangents in her slides sometimes.
This is a pretty easy class, but the lectures are very boring. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunity. The only homework is two online quizzes a week (usually 3-7 questions). All the lectures are is going over a ppt that you already had to look at for hw anyways, so its super boring. She does take attendance and counts classwork as a grade.
The class is set up to where students are given the a lecture slides that they must read on their own and then given a quiz on the material. The next day in class, the professor will go over the SAME slides that you read beforehand making lectures pointless. She never offers feedback. I highly recommend staying away from this professor.
Recommended that you stay away from this professor
Please do not take this class
Stay away from this professor, she makes you do the same stuff each and everyday. She makes you read over 100 slides each class
She makes you read the slides the night before then you go over all 120ish in class
If you are wanting to take this class to satisfy your science credit, do another science. She believes her students will understand the material the first time around and will move on. She doesn't help students understand the material.
You have to take quizzes on the notes before class, which was honestly helpful for me. She also requires us to do classwork, which is her way of taking attendance. There are 2 mid-terms and the final is optional.
Dear lord stay away from this professor. She lectures from 100 slide pps and you have to read them and take a quiz on them prior to each class. So you're either in class or preparing for the next one. No attendance but she collects classwork as a grade so it's in your best interest to go. Never raise your hand in class. She makes you feel stupid.
I think Dr. Melroy gets a really bad wrap. She as a professor is great; she really knows her material and is willing to help you with classwork if you don't understand it! However, this is a huge lecture class and it's hard to teach it in a fun way, hence the long PowerPoints. It is an easy A though, especially if you put in the work!
Her quizzes are worded completely different from her quizzes/tests. I scored higher on the quizzes guessing than I did when I actually tried. The lecture power points are ridiculously long and she'll criticize anything you do wrong. Have fun.
Lectures are heavily powerpoint based - and they are long. Online quizzes are nearly impossible to score 100%, but the tests are much easier. Very boring professor, but the class was fairly easy to pass. Extra credit offered for each test & mandatory attendance (counted by in-class work).
Didnt offer a textbook or homework. Only information available was her lecture. When you ask for help, she would say something like, Hmm, thats not right. Keep trying. And then would walk away. 2/10.
Melroy is a great professor. It is clear that she knows whats shes doing and enjoys it. Even in a lecture hall she walks around and provides individual help. Get ready to take quizzes before each class.
If you could take another bio professor, definitely do it. You have to read 60+ PowerPoint everyday before class and take a quiz on it. She then goes over that same PowerPoint in class. It wasnt the absolute worst class but I dreaded going everyday.
She made biology interesting.
You will fail every single quiz you take before class. You read 50-80 slides and guess on the homework because the answers are not on the slides. When you go to class you then go over the PowerPoint from the quiz you just took. You have to attend class because you get a score out of 3 based on class work. She is a horrible professor!
one of the worst professors on this campus. drop her class or change professors. she is unhelpful and just overall terrible. absolutely should not be here
Melroy was the hardest teacher I've had at UNCW. The fact that this was a huge lecture hall 100 level bio class made it even more infuriating that she reads off the powerpoints word for word and doesn't explain anything. Not to mention you have a ton of homework and tests are impossible. take another professor if that's an option.
Melroy is a good professor. You do have to take quizzes before each class but if you read/take notes on slides you'll be fine. Study for exams! Classwork helps your grade so don't skip. Extra credit is given and boosted my grade a ton.
Dr. Melroy did not do anything to help me in this class. If I had question on material Id email her and, if she responded, was never clear on answers. She doesnt make her lectures very clear, either. She is a tough professor and doesnt listen to anything you have to say.
you have a quiz before every class, they are not her words and very confusing. When in her class its easy you do classwork and you're done. But when taking the quiz and test its a whole different ballgame. They are hard. Also, she reads off the powerpoints word for word so anyone could do her job. You also pretty much teach yourself. She's nice tho
She isn't the nicest person but as long as you read the powerpoints before a test very thoroughly you will be fine. The quizzes before every test really suck and you probably will not do well on them. You have in class work every day to turn in.
not a great professor. very boring and careless, everyone gets B's
She was great in that she was willing to work with her students. With that being said, it is not hard to fail this class! If you're taking it online, it is very important to read ALL of the modules and all parts of it on the PPT. Quizzes have ambiguous answer choices which makes it way more difficult . She assigns readings but no need to read them
this class is required for all students so there isnt really a way around it but the class is difficult, bottom line. every class is a lecture and there is quizzes before every class. she is one of those teachers that makes you feel really stupid for asking questions/getting a question wrong. really snarky and rude.
A quiz and long slide show that is required to do before every single class. Repetitive style of lectures and the quizzes have horrible format.
Both I and others agree she is one of the hardest profs @ UNCW. Can be snarky and rude, doesn't really help or assist. Dry lectures, reading slides. Quiz before every class, super ambiguous and difficult. The tests were the same, even with a cheat sheet people still failed. Why she is still here despite all the negative word of mouth is beyond me.
Absolutely terrible professor. Class itself is hard enough, on top of quizzes that you are required to turn it for a grade before EVERY class, which are set up in the most confusing and aggravating way possible. Lectures consist of you straining your ears to hear anything she says. All in all, worst professor I've had at UNCW, DO NOT TAKE.
Utterly garbage professor. Hard quizzes with trick questions before every class, boring lectures that you cant even hear past the 2nd row. Test full of poor grammar & trick questions. Extra credit not worth amount of work required. Is snarky and unhelpful, clearly doesn't care at all. Have to read 20+ articles and write papers on them. DO NOT TAKE!
Can't hear what she says she mumbles. Powerpoints are posted and you have to take a quiz before every class based on the content your going to learn (before she has taught it to you) this brings average down. Does classwork every class for point so if you don't go you don't get the points.
Avoid this class for those who are either Biology majors/minors, or those who are taking it for credit.
She's sweet-ish but is not clear at all in her in-class presentations. She has quizzes worth 3 points due every class. The wording of her quizzes and tests are confusing. She does offer a lot of extra credit but sometimes the extra credit is difficult and super time-consuming.
Melroy has good intentions, however her delivery is not great. Her class could be so simple. The concepts are those taught in high school bio. Somehow, she finds a way to make topics way more confusing than they need to be. You teach the class to yourself by reading 60-130 slide powerpoints each night before class. One quiz and classwork a day.
STAY AWAY. Made the material way too hard and gives way too much work. Going to office hours Is a waste of time because she has no interest in helping you.
Taking this class was a huge mistake; I should've gone with my instinct and dropped the class when I still had the time, and I took her online. Dr. Melroy gives extra credit opportunities but it's already too much on top of the course load she gives. It seemed as though no matter how much time I spent studying for this class, I always did horrible.
Melroy is the only person who teaches BIO 105 and that's possibly the worst thing about this university. She is absolutely horrible as a professor. Her lectures are mundane, and the 60-100 page slideshows have to be read/quizzed BEFORE class, and she gives in class assignments as attendance grades. I would do anything to never see her again.
really wish uncw would get another option for this class
This class does take effort but its easy because its straightforward. She gives slides that you take on your own then you take an easy 3 question test, she goes over it in class to make sure theres no confusion and gives class work. Theres several easy 100s to cushion your grade. She has sample midterms that are almost exactly like the midterms
Class is only 2 Xs a week, yet we have to teach OURSELVES the material before each class via 54-80 slide PowerPoints. After each PPT you have to take a 5-6 question quiz that has positive and negative points so you pretty much fail unless you get a 3/3- and you cant see the correct answers after- so you learn nothing. You cant understand her@all
The worst. So bad at explaining basic things. Her wording is impossible.
Everyone I've talked to HATES her class. The only good thing I have to say about it is the amount of easy grades to cushion exam grades. The exam scores average at a 75 or below for the class. We took two exams online to makeup a few classes and I don't understand how everyone did so poorly on an exam where we had all the materials at hand.
LOTS OF READING. You have to read presentations for every single class and take a quiz on it. The lectures are really boring but the material itself is not hard. If you actually read and pay attention in class its an easy A but get ready for homework.
Quizzes due before every class period, before you learn the material
I have never taken the time to actually write one of these before. Prior to every single class you are required to learn the entire chapter and take a quiz on it, before we discuss the material what-so-ever. Quiz questions that are supposed to reflect the material you just studied for an hour and a half before are absurdly hard intentionally.
Ummmm, Melroy is a droner. Definitely a class you have to attend due to classwork, but for the most part, easy. You will get bored out of your mind.
One good thing about the professor is the amount of extra credit. Other than that she is rude and condensending. She belittles you and refuses to help you out, she makes the course much harder than it needs to be and wants every single detail even though this is an entry level course. The test and curriculum are just to much. Stay away from her!
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. Not tech savvy and makes things very difficult online with quizzes that do not make sense because they are worded TERRIBLY. Didn't learn anything. Do yourself a favor and NEVER take BIO 105 with her. All in all this class was miserable for me. Seriously, avoid the headache and find another professor.
So much homework!!! 70+ slides to read and a quiz is due before class every class day. Dont make the mistake and take her. You can tell she loves her job but she would rather have you teach yourself
The worst class experience I have ever had and the worse part is she's one of the only professors for BIO 105 at UNCW. The tests make no sense what so ever, even when I used the samples. The lectures are extremely boring and you barely learn anything during them.
The actual class overall is not too difficult, it is the tests that were a problem. Melroy lectures dryly for the entire class with some simple classwork thrown in throughout the lecture. You will be given plenty of resources to study for tests but the tests just don't line up with the study material. Overall, pretty easy class just boring.
Do not take her online. I never got higher than a C on a test, and I used every piece of information provided and still couldn't get a decent grade. She is very rude and unprofessional. I would stay aware from her. She does not care if you learn the material or not. She would rather you fail the class than succeed. Avoid at all cost please!
She uses the class to try to weed out those she sees as unfit to study biology instead of just teaching the material. Gives too many chapters to actually read in one day if you have even one other class. Take it with any other professor.
I WOULD NOT CHOOSE DIANE MELROY. Not only did she not post video lectures, we never had zooms for this class. All she did was post lengthy powerpoints and give quizzes. I thought I understood the material, but I failed all 3 midterms she gave us. She did give lots of extra credit, but it was insanely lengthy material.
Dr. Melroy's class is very monotonous, large amounts of slides every week to go through with very little engaging assignments. She is willing to work with you, but the canvas grading for the weekly quizzes is unfair. If you get 9 questions correct on a 10 question quiz, you get an 80% on the quiz, making it very difficult to get a fair grade.
She never posted lectures and never explained the material. There is so much material to learn and it's impossible to pass the midterms. I have no clue how I got an A in this class, it was honestly a miracle.
I had the opportunity to take this class last semester while it was a part of the online portion. Her quizzes were challenging and required you to pay close attention to the lectures given. However, she allowed us to do retakes and answered any questions we had. Overall, if you work hard and are dedicated, you will pass.
The absolute worst professor Ive ever had. Reached out many times to ask clarifying questions and get study tips only to have her send rude and snarky emails telling me that I should study more. Not only this, but I was informed that she reached out to specific students and made study guides for them. Absolutely ridiculous. She destroyed my GPA
Honestly one of the worst classes and professors I have ever had. I never have problems with professors but she made this class living hell. It was unnecessarily painful. This class could have been exciting and fun but she made it horrible. She was rude if you asked her questions and did not post lectures, just powerpoints. Horrible.
This is one of the worst professors Ive ever had to deal with. Her quizzes and tests questions are basically written like riddles. They make little to no sense and she intentionally makes some of them trick questions. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
the worst professor ever Lecture:dry exam:hard and not like what she teach in class you could still get a C even u do all the things she ask u to do. I even watch other youtube videos to try to understand the material better before class quizzeshard I teach myself everything ngl this is the first class that make me cry during the exam
Doesnt teach the material. You have to learn the information then take the quiz on it before class. Then in class she just reads the PowerPoint and talks about stuff thats not up there and doesnt explain any of it and doesnt help when someone has a question.
Prof. Melroy was one of the worst teachers I have every had. She gives quizzes that are riddles and nearly impossible to do well on. She taught with the flipped lecture portion and would have us take quizzes that are due before class, then during class she just goes over the quizzes that you just bombed. Do not take her for your own sake.
Each module has 3+ ppoint presentations with 29-45 slides. Have to read every one and take notes. Melroy doesn't clarify anything on e-mails when you ask. All quizzes have so many trick questions and riddles. For articles if you're off by one sentence for para criteria, will deduct half point for every one missed. Grades hard! On your own. Run far!
Prof. Melroy is not my favorite professor. Before classes, she makes you read long powerpoints and take confusing quizzes. During class, she goes through the powerpoints you already read and teaches you nothing. Her quizzes are very hard and don't make much sense. Her grading style on these quizzes is also very confusing. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!
She assigns 100+ slide power points and a quiz due before each class, and the quizzes are both graded and worded so strangely that it makes it nearly impossible to get full credit. Says this is done on purpose to "avoid guessing". She is also difficult to talk to, and doesn't explain concepts in lectures well. Definitely avoid if possible.
Doesnt help us out
Is it possible to get a good grade in this class? Yes, yes it is. Is it possible to do so without passive aggressive emails from the Professor who for some reason is incapable of properly wording said emails? No, no it isnt. Are the quizzes worded in a way that felt Like they were meant to trick you? They sure were.
I usually don't write these, but since she is the only professor for BIO105, I figured I would give feedback. She kind of has an attitude whenever you ask questions, so try to limit asking questions. Quiz before every class and you have to read 100 PPT slides. She does give a lot of extra credit, however. Tests are kind of hard even online.
doesnt really teach the material, just reads straight from powerpoints.
Class was unnecessarily difficult. The lectures feel like a complete waste of time because it goes over the same slideshows that you've taken the quiz on the night before so you more or less have to teach yourself the content to pass. The quizzes are literal riddles and test your reading comprehension more than bio content itself. Very bad class...
she purposely words the quizzes to be harder than they need to be. very confusing class. she is rude in her response emails and acts like her students are a burden to her. she also grades very harshly on the articles. but the exam is online and open for three days so you can take the exam when you have time.
Honestly she is a pretty bad teacher, but the way the class is designed its easy to do well in. Quizzes are twice a week and open note, attendance is not required. 3 exams throughout the year that you get to use a "cheat sheet" on, and most of the questions on the exams come from practice exams she gives you. All assessments are online.
I am a first year student here and she is the worst Bio teacher I have had. Aggressive towards students. Doesn't liked to be asked questions over email. Teaches from PowerPoints. Two quizzes weekly. Can't tell you a thing that I learned. Terrible. Doesn't even know why she is a teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN. That's all.
Was not very helpful to students and test questions involved materials not discussed in class or during the Lab
Prof. Melroy has an interesting way of "teaching" her students. If you enjoy a flip class where you teach yourself the criteria before class and she barely answers any questions you may have during her lectures, then take this course. Melroy assigns 2 quizzes a week that are due at 9 am and has classwork every class. Her quizzes and test are :/
She does not teach; she just reads slides and expects you to basically teach yourself. She gives two quizzes a week that are much more difficult than they need to. The tests are hard and almost nothing we "learn" from the slides is on there. In lecture she also goes fast and gets rude if you ask her to repeat something or explain anything further.
The setup of this class is awful. You have to do a mandatory quiz before each class which requires you to read the entire powerpoint beforehand. Tests are difficult. She does not explain concepts well during lectures (which are not mandatory). Only took her course because she was the only Bio105 professor available.
Dr. Melroy's idea of teaching is simply reading over the PowerPoints that she has already given us. The two open note quizzes a week are very difficult and the questions are worded in the most confusing way possible. I had some of my friends who are STEM majors help me on the quizzes, and even they struggled. A BIO 105 class shouldn't be this hard
This professor was extremely difficult to follow. Though she had a clear schedule of homework, quizzes, and lectures the material was never taught in good form for students to understand. I had a hard time knowing what was expected of me in this class. Her help also was never worth seeking.
I do not know where to begin this class has been awful from the start she treats the class as if it is a level 3 to 400 level course. She does not explain things well but oh she expects you to know it. I have had several email battles with this lady. Just steer clear of her class I got almost an A in Org and will end up with a C+ in her course
Makes you read long slide presentations before every class and take an online quiz. There is HW during class that's not mandatory but it helps grade to submit answers. Lots of work and he sucks as a teacher. doesn't like to teach and gets annoyed when ppl ask quetions
DO NOT TAKE MELROY. She was the bane of my existence this semester. I'd never recommend her. There are 2 quizzes every single week, & they take forever to complete. The information you are quizzed on isn't in the powerpoint. Her lectures make me want to sleep. She is very biased and non-understanding. Take someone else or take a different class.
Don't do it. I am warning you right now. Terrible grading system, does not explain, when a student asks a question she does not answer it clearly if she answers it at all. Her quizzes are impossible and does not say the right answers after we are done. Biology is hard enough as is, but this class was terrible.
Do not take her class. The online quizzes are graded horribly and her exams are hard. Would not recommend.
She is the bane of my existence
Do not take this class. I had to withdraw even though I had a 98% on my labs and quizzes just because of her ridiculous exams that made absolutely no sense what so ever, even though i understood the material. Very accessible but her feedback makes no sense either.
DONT DO IT. The absolute most boring class I have ever taken. 2 quizzes a week on the class material, but you have to submit the quizzes BEFORE you go to class. She wants you to teach yourself. Lectures will put you to sleep, especially if they're on zoom. Exams are ridiculous. You can study for weeks and still not make above a 70.
She seems like a nice person, this being said, her teaching style is horrible. A PowerPoint consisting of anywhere from 50-100 slides is required to be read the day BEFORE class with a mandatory quiz that follows. These quizzes are 4-6 questions with multiple questions in each question. Will not allow you to see which questions you missed.
Work heavy but you will survive. Every week you get 100-200 lecture slides, use those slides to take a 10-15 question quiz, then complete a 4-8 page lab. Take notes while you do the slides and you will be fine. You do not get to see what you missed and she will be of no help. You get a page worth of a self made study guide for tests.
Really not as bad as everyone says. Her lectures can be boring, but she is always willing to answer questions and knows what she is talking about. You have to read the slides and take a quiz before lectures, but they are simple to look up. Class is optional and brings up your grade if you go. Lots of extra credit opportunities too.
The lectures weren't helpful. She never answers questions fully and leaving students to teach themselves. The quizzes didn't make since at all and were graded heavily. She was also highly unsure of herself. I feel very unprepared for the upcoming final. I recommend taking this class with another professor.
You have to take a quiz before every single class, and the catch is that you don't even learn about the lecture you took a quiz about until after the quiz is due. She Is tricky with words and doesn't tell you what's wrong if you get a wrong answer.
This class isn't as bad as a lot of people say. Some of her wording can be tricky but just read carefully. . Show up to the lectures, sometimes they can be boring but you will learn a lot; she truly knows what she is talking about and is always able to answer questions when you ask her. She gives a ton of extra credit opportunities.
don't take this class unless you HAVE TO. if you do take it make sure to make friends in the class who can help you (the only way i was able to do well). way harder than a 105-level course should be. the professor would get mad at students for asking questions... and the exams were awful.
If you ask her a question that takes around a minute to explain, she will brush you off and tell you to email her instead. She doesn't answer emails. Before classes, there is a quiz. The answers are elusive, open the outline when looking over the Powerpoint for answers and you'll get 3/5. Exams are extremely difficult, write down names and such.
It is straight up not hard. People are being dramatic
Horrendous quiz style and no proper material for exams. Avoid at all costs.
She has quizzes to do before every lecture which are hard. However, attendance was not mandatory and if you did go to class you did classwork for extra points. Her tests are hard, but online. Overall, if you do well on the quizzes and attend lectures you do well in the class. Also provided a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Melroy is very okay. Her class isn't too bad and she does give her students a lot of information to cover for the exams. She offers extra credit for every exam which is super nice. There are quizzes that need to be taken before every class but it's not the worst thing ever.
Her class overall isn't that hard. During the lectures, you have to complete classwork which is usually around 6 questions, and she goes over each one. There are quizzes you have to take before each class that are almost impossible to get a 100 on, but you get two attempts. Exams are online and she gives you the chance to get extra credit.
Out to pretty much get you if you show little to no effort in the class
Professor Melroy was a nice lady. Her lectures were boring but manageable. She made us do "classworks" during class but went over the answers right after. Quizzes were given twice a week, at home, with 2 attempts. All 3 tests were taken at home and very similar to her study guides. The final was optional. Many opportunities for extra credit.
She has quizzes to due before every lecture which are hard. Overall bad teaching style and tough.
Worst professor I have ever had, 10 page labs every week as well with quizzes based on PowerPoints (4-5 PowerPoints a week, each powerpoint over 30 slides). An ungodly amount of work for a class like this.
This class boils down to looking at a powerpoint for a quiz before class, then looking at the same powerpoint in class to do classwork. It's pretty easy, but I would definitely study up for the tests. Diane is nice and explains things fairly thoroughly, but if you read the powerpoint (which you'll need to before every class anyways) you're good
Homework was terrible but I heard it was the same for other bio 105 classes. The exams weren't too hard, they were online. Overall nothing crazy, I would take her over any of the other bio 105 teachers.
I did not like this class. Melroy was not helpful at all. She'd have us take quizzes for homework to prepare for lecture the next day (she claimed it was so we understood the basics). They were so specific and unhelpful because in lecture, she would just read off the slides she made you read. She's a good person but would never recommend her.
there is only one piece of advice i can give you if you have to take this course with her: run
She's really not that bad. There are quizzes before every class but they are off of slideshows that you can look at so the answers are right there. She does go a little fast when she is lecturing so I recommend that you type or write notes before each lecture. The material isn't that bad and she explains it pretty well.
This class requires a lot of prep work, but Melroy's explanations are helpful. Definitely use resources like unstuckstudy ai, ChatGPT, and the textbook to stay on top of the material. Not the easiest bio course, but manageable with dedication.
