not bad not bad
Diane teaches well. She is very good with understanding and interpreting the meaning of an essay. She is lovely
She is very unclear and unhelpful on essays. I find her not helpful at all and honestly, am not learning anything from her class. she misled me so many times on my essays and she basically wants you to do what she wants...who care about you perspective.
DIANE IS VERY MOTIVATIONAL AND A BIG HELP. WHOEVER RATED HER AS NOT HELPFUL DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. DIANE OFFERS ALL HER PH. #'S SO SHE CAN BE REACHED AT ANYTIME TO HELP HER STUDENTS,SHE WANTS THEM TO DO WELL IN HER CLASS.
She really takes time to make sure you understand everything and have ideas for your essay. Great teacher.
she interprets the piece well, and tries to makeyou see her take. i find her very unclear at times and not helpful...

She has to be the best english teacher at DC. She might mark tough but what do you expect from a univeristy transferable course. very helpful and always upbeat and appoarchable.
I have taken Diane for Eng 130 as well and if you are getting a bad mark it is strictly due to poor grammar and basic english skills!!!! Diane is very fair and lenient and what all english teachers should be like. She will be sadly missed at DC.
she is very unclear at times. i dont find her helpful at all. do not take her.
I found stiles class a funky fun factory. She was very relaxed and interacted with the students in a friendly one on one atomsphere. Plus if you pretend to grab onto your imaginary **** during class it really cracks her up :)
Her class was interesting. I improved my writing style a lot. A kind and approachable instructor.
This course has been one of most rewarding for me at Douglas college. I have enjoyed other profs. instruction, however as a learning experience Diane Stiles clearly communicated the reason why I was back in school. I was not there to prove my intellegence, I was there to learn.
really nice instructor and helpfull too. As far as her marking goes it seems on the good side of fair meaning that if you put in your best effort an A is possible.
Very patient and easygoing instructor.Makes course better than it sounds.Learn lots about poetry and writing. Her marking is hard. But it's possible to get good marks if you put in lots of effort and go to her for help. She's very approachable, excellent Engl instructor.
She is an awsome prof! i'm glad I got her.
Definetly my favorite educator at a post - secondary institution! Diane is so brilliant! I love her classes that I can't miss a single one! Her thinking and her way of explaning things are just so clear, and simply wonderful. You won't regret this class if you take it with her!
she's a great teacher. really nice and you can tell she actually likes what shes teaching.
diane is the best engl prof. in douglas college....very helpful and approachable
she rocks!!!!
She's a pretty easy marker and is really really helpful about essays. You can spend quite a bit of time in her office and basically write the dang thing there! She's loves what she does but in our class she was a bit scattered brained. Sweet woman though :)
Professor Stiles changed my life! I changed my major from Business to English Lit.She is easily the most engaging, brilliant, interesting, dynamic and sweetest (big heart) English Professor I have ever come across. She makes English Literature exciting and encourages students to think critically. She respects all students (eg. treats students as adults with no superiority complex or snobby attitude). She is always available for her students - during and outside office hours. - too cool! HER upbeat positive attitude makes students (even the non-keeners) want to strive to do their best . Prof. Stiles deserves the Douglas College Teaching Excellence Award.
Stiles is a good teacher but the person below is in for a rude awakening if now an english major--Diane is a softy compared to 99% of other profs and therefore not a good basis of comparison.
The best teacher i have ever had. she is the best. I actually like english now! if you are unsure to take a course with her, im telling you now TAKE IT, she goes out of her way to help anyone out.
Not the most engaging speaker in the world, but she's a super nice person, and if you can pay attention in class, you'll find that what she says is very insightful and helpful. She is also very good about helping you if needed. She is also one of the easiest markers I've ever had. Reccomended, but not the best lectures ever.
Great Prof!
she's nice, almost too nice...she's a grade inflator, which for me did not help me improve or prep for more challenging college and uni courses.
A nice person but does not help get you ready for University--her marking is WAY TOO easy. It is great if you need a GPA boost but it does not reflect what you should really get and you will have a rude awakiening in the future
Best teacher i've ever had in DC, she is nice, yes, and makes me like English now. encourage students to learn, not like other English teachers, make a student just wants to give up, highly recommended
what a great teacher! she was a breath of fresh air in the english department. really easy marker and no final! this class was really fun!
nice teacher!!!!!easy marker!!!!!even cannot find one word to describe!!!!!! N-I-C-E!!!!!!!
Brilliant woman! We are fortunate to have her at Douglas. Her classes are interesting and she provides in-depth feedback on work completed. Very approachable and responsive to what students have to say. I would highly reccommend her classes.
This prof is nice but dull and is the easiest marker around. You wojn't learn a lot but you'll get a good mark.
super person. great teacher. positive person with charisma that invigorates class discussions.
she was an AWESOME prof. she saved my GPA. really nice, totally approachable, really respectful of your opinion (even if they differ from hers - that's hard to find esp @ DC), totally take her! just do ur work and talk to her if u have probs n she'll try her hardest to help u do well.
Diane is very helpful, but this course requires for you to be excellent in analytic interruption...I got my first C+ ever at Douglas college and it was in this class and it had to be in my last semester...Diane is great though course is tuff if you suck at english
Diane is approachable, informative and easy going. Everything is open book. Some in class assignments (2-3, similar to quizzes), one 15 min presentation, open book midterm, final, and one essay. Very slack and flexible with presentation dates. Take lots of notes if you don't want to read the readings. Make second year english not intimidating.
Diane is nice but very boring. The class is a wast of time and you don't really learn much. I was very disappointed not sure why students rate her highly.
i didn't find i learnt anything from this course. i had high expectations of it, but was let down as each class passed. her marking is harder than expected. the average was a B with one student getting an A. After taking this class with her, i've switched my major to business. English literature was simply a let down.
terrible instructor--flighty not focused and not informative.
I am doing 2317 with her now and it is incredibly boring. She goes on and on about obvious things and does not challenge us. She is a nice person but maybe should teach first year stuff because she is kind of superficial with what she teaches. Okay class and instructor if you have to take it for a prereq, otherwise avoid the class.
not interesting and pretty scattered, does she know what she is supposed to be teaching? I did not learn much and it won't help me with my other courses and writing
Have to be excellent in analytic interruption. Sometimes very scattered and often went "what? how did you arrive at that?" Often asks "so, what do you think that means?" and then you try to tell her and she goes "well.. no..it doesnt". Nice person.. but class had a tendency to doze off.
Not a good second year class to take--too boring, quizzes such and she is not clear. Take the earlier literature one instead (2316?)you do a great drama and very cool reading I was not interested a first but a tottally hooked.
In comparison with the other 2nd-year English courses I've taken, this was the least enjoyable. Diane is a very nice, approachable person, but you're always left wanting something more in class. Often, she'll tell you her take on a poem, and doesn't allow much room for creative interpretation.
An overall very good professor. You will have to consistently analyze the works you read to do well in class, and this is truly the difficult aspect of the course. Diana herself though, is very helpful, possibly the most caring of any english teacher I've met. Relatively tough course, but good prof, I recommend her
thsi prof is a nightmare. Her english 1130 was super hard and she was super boring. She is like a high school teacher--treats you as if you are baby, very strict and not a good teacher--she only has one aproach. My friend wasdoing eng 1130 with another prof who was way more clear and helpful. AVOID at all costs
Good teaching style. I actually rather liked her class. One problem was that it was really presentation based (usually she had two presentations per class) and most of the class was ESL. So far, she's the only English teacher at Douglas that I would take a class with again.
She's the best prof ever! very helpful! she's got her way of teaching obviously..and as long as u follow what she's asked for, u'll get at lesat B-. (tip:don't hesitate to go ask her! she'd help u A! L!O!T! Stay after class or go to her office) I love her!
If you believe english is not your strength, you better take ENG 1130 with other professors. She is NEVER an easy marker; she marks you based on university english standard. I got a B in English 12, but ended up C+ in her class.
Boring insturctor and her class is very high school. She is the only person who knows the meaning of any of the poetry. Do NOT think for yourself you MUST follow her interpretation--night mare for 2nd year
I love her!She is so helpful! If you ask her about the essay, she will give you a lot of useful idea and tell you what she want. She is so nice and talent! By the way she is the God of internation student.Take her 1130 and get a high mark as long as you study hard, read each article and ask her suggestion .
Completely biased. Do one thing wrong in her class and she won't let you forget it, through her marking and class discussions.
Nice lady, but classes can be a bit boring, despite some of the great works we studied; the bulk of the class was always answering discussion questions with a partner. Some found her in-class essay to be difficult (most of the class got P's or failed), but if you take notes in class, listen and know how to write an essay, it shouldn't be too bad...
Extremely helpful and passionate. Shes very flexible and does not want to see any of her students do poorly. She will help in as many ways as she can such as staying late or working with you whenever she has a moment. She's incredibly knowledgeable and most of us lost track of what she was saying. I learned a lot and did well, highly recommended.
She's awesome! I was quite worrying before taking this course cus I wasn't interested in Engl at all. Her lectures could sound a bit boring but she's the most helpful instructor in DC! She's 24/7 ready to give you tons of information whenever you need her help. She's very dedicated to her class and students. She made me like English lit :D luv her!
Horrible class. Most of the students in her classes are ESL students so the level of discussion and her lectures are low. She is nice but writes out her students outlines for them so they do not learn --she does it and you better follow her exact interpretation (her way or the high way). If you want to learn do not take her 2nd or 3rd yr class
She is nice but very dull. I took her third year course last year about sickness because I am going into nursingand it was the worst--I love to read and nothing we read was interesting and she was so disorganized. I could never see her because her ESL students monopolize all her time--just not good--avoid.
Really nice teacher, and means well. The only problem I had was with her disorganization. She was all over the place and it conflicts with my style. It was hard to keep up with all her readings and articles she threw at us. Not a bad course, you'll get out what you put in. One of the better english teachers.
She is nice and can be helpful. It's difficult to keep up with readings and there is too much emphasis on analyzing writing. We rarely use our textbook. She should create a system or systems that is best suited for students so they can improve their learning. Following her course outline alone is not enough to do well in her class.
I thought she is an awesome instructor. She doesn't want to see anyone fail and is more than helpful if you seek her out. I've taken two courses with her now so I'm not getting the negative comments at all. Diane is a teacher that cares and I respect her for that.
She's a very kind person, but i feel like her assignments are unclear. she has this tendency to not tell you what she was looking for until everyone gets a poor grade and then tells you what she expected. she definitely does not make it easy for students to get a good grade, i can't imagine anyone passing a 1st year english class from her with A
She is an incredibly hard marker. If you take notes and attend classes regularly you should be okay - but in order to do well you must put in A LOT of time.
If you love analysis, please take her course. I learned so much in Eng 1102. She talks about many interesting philosophical themes through a series of great novels. I highly recommend her. If you put effort into her class, you will be credited as such. Not for the simple-minded!
I like this professor, even she tests you with pop quiz every class. She is thoughtful and gives a lot of valuable instructions, you can't be laze with her if you want a nice grade.
great teacher, but tough with grade
Very good teacher
She's very friendly as well as gives good information. Very informative and knows what she's talking about.
Diane was a tough grader, but wants you to improve and she gives you plenty of opportunity to do that. She was also very understanding and supportive while I was going through a difficult time and was accommodating to my needs. Would take a class with her again!
English is usually one of my best subjects but I struggled so much in Diane's class. There were three novels plus a ton of poems and short stories in her course pack. She's super nice, approachable and will always help you. It's a challenge but you'll learn. Whenever I think back to her class all I remember is "write analytically not summarily"
Very intelligent teacher, like definitely top 5% in terms of analytical and writing abilities. She marks tough but is very helpful and accessible outside class. If you take her class, you will learn to analyze literature even if it kills you!
She is not a bad professor, but she will repeat the same things in her courses if you want to take her class again. When people ask questions sometimes she gets really confused and changes the subject right away.
I took ENGL 1102 with her and I was very confused the whole time. I had to drop out along with half of the class. Essay 1 is 15% in class, open book. Essay 2 is take home but you have to finish it in class, 25%. Final essay 25%, in class, open book. Midterm 10% closed book. Presentation 5%
Really tough marker but gives good feedback and suggestion for you to improve on. Nice and willing to help. No online lecture notes posted, writes out everything and gives handouts- her writing can be difficult to decipher. Write down important key stuff she says about poems/short stories, it will help on the tests.
Diane Stiles is one of the hardest professors I have ever had in English. She expects merely one answer for every assignment and paper, her way or the highway. On the other hand, she does give feedback on everything if you ask, although her feedback is sometimes confusing. English has always been subjective to each reader, but not in her class.
Unclear grading criteria Confusing lectures You will not learn anything in her classes, you can only study and teach yourself how to do things. Do not choose her as your prof unless you want to be depressed for an entire semester GIVES EXTREMELY CONFUSING AND UNRELATED FEEDBACK
She was very organized, smart and always willing to help even after the evening classes last Fall! Shes approachable & flexible. Her course was tough at first. However, it got better when I carefully read before the class, participated & took good notes. She changed the way I read. If you want to learn to analyze literature, take her course!
Worst prof ever. F's on 1 mark things after meeting during office hrs and redoing assignments. To much reading. good poems and content but if you do not say what she wants to hear ur wrong. Contradictory told me to write one thing but then when graded said its wrong. DO NOT TAKE if you are not a strong writer. tells you to take class u already did
The most boring class I have taken. I almost fall asleep and whenever she tries to explain anything she is so off. She trails off into different things so you are left confused. Really confusing term essays
Prof Diane is very kind and caring; she is accessible outside of class, responds to emails right away, and is easy to communicate with. However, her marking criteria isnt very clear, making it hard to determine your grade. Also you have to really follow her notes and interpretation, theres not much room for personal interpretation or creativity.
Diane is a very caring prof, I made a bad judgment on her after she gave me an F on the first in-class essay. She's a hard marker and expects writing to match what she goes over in class but also gives you chances to do better. She will edit your paper, give you an outline to write on and gives extensions. If u analyze & work hard you will do well.
Diane is such an understanding and helpful professor. Took this class for my first year and I find it surprisingly good. Just listen to her advices and do all the work and you should be on the right track. Diane is very organized and easy to follow/ask hep from. Weekly readings and discussions are easy to pass. I definately recommend this class
Ill not consider her if you are taking 1101, her exams are so tough even if was an open book and she doesnt help in any thing. I got feedbacks but overall all the time my scoring was less than a c- Essays are hard to do and even without guidelines
English, to me, has always been subjective. Professors who are open to new arguments in English have worked well with me. Diane did not. It's unfortunate, but I had to stick with her interpretations of the work rather than my own, especially for the last two assignments. This was two years ago though, so perhaps she has changed.
tests every class, very old school. DO NOT take this as your first english class, my mistake I have no idea what's going on half the time. She expects university level writings from you but doesn't even teach us how.
Definitely in my top five for teachers, you can tell she's actually passionate about English, really emphasizes getting feedback and tries to lead you to answers, her videos are just as in-depth as her lectures so its a great resource
1 in class essay open book, closed book mid term., 1 term paper, 1 three hour final. And small quiz ever class of the short story its fairly easy. As for the course it was easy but diane is a very hard marker do not take if your a weak writer. She expects university level work.
Study off her video lectures and take good in class notes. She is a tough grader and only wants to hear what she thinks. Take if your a strong writer.
She was a decent prof. She can be a bit of a tough grader but if you listen to her feedback you will do well.
Take notes during lecture, she likes work done her way, difficult grader.
Professor Stiles has a specific teaching style - take detailed notes in class and follow her instructions closely. While she can be a tough grader, attending lectures and using resources like Unstuck study for study prep can really help.
