This class is HARD! The information was very unclear and the tests were insanely difficult. You would study all the information only to be hit with NEW information on the test. Avoid this instructor at all costs.
WOW this lady is so very difficult, her lectures are so unclear and smashed together. She verbaly assults students who ask questions that she seems easy. Her tests are awful. You get reading, pre-lab, lab, post-lab, quizes, and more in just a week
this teacher should just quit. my first class at this school and 70% of the people in my class failed her first. they failed with less than a D. she gave us more work to do and did nothing to go back and see what we all didn't know. i dropped.
This teacher is as poor as one can get. Her classes are loaded with work, notes, and labs. She gives no constructive or positive feedback. Her class is hard!!! Avoid at all costs. More than 50% of my class dropped out. Her tests are crazy hard. Stay out
Stay out of her class. She told me I had a learning disabilty because I could not pass her tests. She is horrible, no one passed, she should really consider a new profession. If you accidently get her, drop the class AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!

Tough but fair, a little hard work does go a long way with this teacher.
This appears to be the only way to respond to last comment. I showed up for class on time, I participated in lab, I performed homework on time, I studied for tests. Guess I am a teachers pet. I did what was expected and succeeded.
Smashes a lot into a class period. As long as you go to class and do the assignments you can pass the class. Test are very picky though, i knew about the subject but she asked some pretty rediculus questions.
The worst teacher ever at Cod, if you have a brain use it and do not take this teacher take an eaiser class like Bio 100 with Lynn Fancher it is an easy A this teacher is rude, hates when you ask questions and puts people down for her own amusement
WORST TEACHER EVER!! DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS AND THINKS SHE IS THE GODESS OF EARTH SCIENCE TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANOTHER ES TEACHER IF YOU WANT TO PASS I HAD 25 KIDS IN MY CLASS AND ONLY 11 PASSED
This teacher sucks, she thinks shes gods gift to science. She looks for ways to fail kids and make it as hard as possible. Even when you try hard, do all the work, and go to every single class she still looks for ways to kick you down in the dirt. Do not take this teacher!!!
STOP!!!!!!!!! do not take her even if she is the only option you have! wait for the next quarter and get a different teacher. a lot of work, test are superheavy.
Strode is one of the worst teachers that i have ever had!!! It just goes to show the difference a teaching deree makes. Even though Mrs. Strode is incredibally educated in terms of science,SHE DOESN'T HAVE THE SLIGHEST CLUE how to teach.
she isnt a very good teacher. i would not recommend choosing her for a class. There isnt much homework aside from the occasional prelab and reading, but her grading is very strict and her tests can be difficult. On one lab i had, i made a minor, honest mistake, and she gave me an F on it. DONOTTAKE
I must be the odd student out. I really enjoyed Diana's teaching methods and style. She made the subject interesting. Maybe becuase I'm an adult learner I appreciated the "tough" attitude more. I've seen her on campus lately and she was as kind and interested in my academics as she was in class.
She's a great teacher! Challenging but fair and always willing to help out if you ask. I'd definitely take other classes that she teaches.
Maybe some can be a teacher's pet. Those who don't have a job and other classes. She is a highly critical teacher and looking to fail many. She is unclear on how to teach. She looks to fail people rather than try to get as many students to pass the class. Her work load is unreal. Take someone els
Look for another option!!!! This teacher was the worst in my school history. She assigned chapters before she actually taught it, which is a backward way of teaching. I though you are suppose to be taught and then have an assignment on what you learned. Not with her! Even though she knew the subject well, she taught as if we were at the same level
For your own sake, do not take this teacher. She may be a very nice person out of class, but in class she is very critical and comes across as being rude. I am almost done here at COD and that was by far the worst teacher I have had. She is very unclear with what she expects, and will mark things wrong without telling you why. take another class.
I agree with everything everyone says about this teacher. She is pure evil. It wouldn't be too extreme to drop the class/wait to take it next semester, because you are guaranteed a miserable four months.
Learning objectives very clear and if followed will ease through tests.
great teacher!
She isn't just a terrible teacher, she is a terrible human being. She should not be paid for what she does to students.
This class is rediculously hard. It is interesting subject matter made to be 1000x harder than it actually is. Do not take this class if your GPA matters for you. Asking around my class, I believe she has given out less than 10 A's on assignments total for the entire semester. Avoid it at all costs.
Professor Strode is fair. She is passionate about her teaching.
Very hard teacher but I learned so much about the World Ocean in that class I don't regret it. She really did a good job fitting so much information into one semester! If you are interested at all in the environment- take this class. If you aren't- take this class!
Finally, a real college professor. Definitely not an easy A, but those don't make you smarter anyway. A very good teacher that seems to think that college students have paid 500$ for a class so that they can actually learn something. At the very least, you will learn how to think... on your own!
In the first couple weeks you will not enjoy Mrs. Strode because you're probably not use to a teacher that likes to challange you. She IS very strict. However, I haven't tried so hard in this class as I tried in her class, people who are slackers like me will even try in this class. If you want a challenge take this class! You'll learn alot! She i
She sux and i hate her with a passion! she might come off as nice to begin with but i would never take this teacher for any class again!
Inhuman....I find myself asking god, "WHY?!" She is rude, insulting, uncaring, and gives a work load as if I had nothing else to do with the rest of my days on this earth!
An absolutely horrible teacher! Never Ever take her! She asks if you have questions but when you do ask her, her response is usually "Well you should know that information." And she would never give you the answer. She will not care about you as a human being! Labs and tests are insanely difficult. She is rude and insulting to every student. AVOID
Plain and simple.....Never EVER take a class with her as the teacher!
She was the worst prof i've ever had. I am a good student and it was literally impossible to get better than a C in her class
I am just finishing up my first semester back in school in many years. I had Prof. Strode and I would have to disagree with the comments. She outlines and tells you what will be on every test. In my experience, the only people doing bad in her class are the people who aren't studying.
I don't understand why she has recieved such a poor rating. She's a very nice teacher, passionate about what she teaches & helpful. 2 Succeed pay attention in class, focus, do ur homework (which u get about 3 assign.) & ask for help when u need it! Just do your work! C'mon you're in college it's what's expected. Great class, great Prof! I recc! :)
Mrs. Strode is a GREAT professor! She loves water and has a passion for what she does. She understands (has prior field experience) the field and loves teaching it and is also a great teacher. Very good at explaining things. Takes deadlines and lockouts seriously. Expects studying, and expects on-time attendance. Does in-class quiz for ex-cr.
Lots of work especially for the labs. Labs can be tough since teacher is a very picky grader. Tests are tough as well since all you can do to study is look at the confusing notes she gives you and read the textbook. Better of with another teacher. I'm an A/B student. I struggled but passed this class with a C.
The first week of class she let us know that we should be happy to finish with a C, and I only know one person who achieved a B. She has ridiculous expectations and went on about how this is now 'adult learning' which was her excuse to be a poor teacher. If you want to keep you GPA high avoid her at all costs.
Very smart individual with previous field experience, but HARD teacher. Struggled to finish lab in class to the point where our group makes mistakes because were working so fast. Dont bother asking her a question, you will get a snarky remark instead of an answer.Interesting material in class but be prepared to teach yourself. Take w/dif professor
took her for earth science when i went to cod. she was HORRIBLE. she made assumptions about you and treated you like you were two. me and my group were afraid to ask her any questions bc she would just say "look in the book". dont take her.
Very confusing, difficult to speak to, very unhelpful, intimidating, and always very disappointed with everyone in the class. She herself said she disliked teaching this course.
She is the worst professor I've had. If we asked her a question, she'd tell us to either look in the book or we should know the answer already. Over half the class had D's going into the final, but she wouldn't offer any extra credit. She was also the hardest grader. She failed someone in a lab but then gave someone else in the same group an A.
I was an a/b student until I got to her class did poor job explaining what and how to study for tests and looked for every possible excuse to take points away! She even takes off for spelling and failed one of my labs because I show up 5 mins late to class if u need a professor to deflate your confidence and ruin your day this person is right 4 u
If you like bad grades, if you like discouragement, if you like getting F's, Strode is for you. Plain and simple.
Mrs. Strode should be in a career that she likes. It is not teaching.
Aweful teaching. I was constantly studying and trying to improve my grade when majority of everything you do is outside of the classroom. Their is no study guides and tests are extremely hard avoid her at all costs.
She is very helpful but also makes her class extremely hard. She's kind of intimidating but I think that's just her demeanor she is nice when you talk to her on a personal level. She is very knowledgable about all areas of science because she used to work in the field. You will learn a lot in her class, but it won't be easy!
This woman is complete garbage I went thru great pain petitioning a withdrawal from her class after I failed it cuz my brother was deathly ill during that semester and she denied it. Worst teacher and worst person I've ever come in contact with
Extremely knowledgeable and passionate in her career field. That said, she treats her class like a college class ought to be taught. Do the assignments/readings and ask questions. Excellent at working with any conflicts in schedule, just need to let her know before hand. Visit during office hours and you'll see she is a genuinely friendly person.
Horrible teacher. Doesn't provide any help when asked. Disrespectful and treats students like dirt. Do not take her class.
Her teaching style is strict and professional, but if you are not a baby and do the work she asks you to (which truly isn't much), you will do fine. It's a challenging course but she's very passionate and helpful. I learned a lot.
She is very strict and can be very mean. She is NOT lenient AT ALL and hardly understanding. She is very passionate about her subject, but should not be a teacher. I would have had a B in her class but she denied my late lab exercise even though i talked to her about it and she said it was fine. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS> TRUST ME.
Very passionate about her subject and you can definitely tell by the way she teaches. Very smart individual but very strict. I'm normally an A/B student and I struggled to get a C in the course. If you are a good test taker then definitely take the course, if not... Well I suggest a different professor.
Professor Strode is a great teacher, but the course is definitely challenging. I worked my butt off to get a B and am extremely happy with that. I struggled with some of the material and she helped me out a lot. I recommend her, but this class isn't for the feint of heart!
Very challenging class! I'm a science major, worked my butt off and I got a B. I'm happy with it. She is very passionate about the subject so if you show some interest she will be very pleased! this class is not for the faint of heart, she has high expectations. you really have to stay on top of the work, or you should just drop the class. worth it
Professor Strode is fair. If you do the reading and homework, you should do fine. She was very helpful in answering any questions that I had. This is a college course and she treats it like one. If you want to learn something take her. She is passionate about the subject and will help you to better understand it. Not an easy A but, I still got one.
I am one semester away from my associates degree and this is by far the worst teacher I have encountered. She demands that you cite all of your answers even though they are just direct answers from the textbook. It must be a rough job to not actually teach anything in the class and give bad grades because of it.
Without a doubt the worst teacher I have had at COD and I have had some lousy teachers. Don't take her online class because she her grading standards are ridiculous. I'm an A student and this was the hardest class that I have had to take and I barely got a C. No online science class should be done the way she does things. DONT TAKE HER TAKE MY WORD
oh my god horrible teacher, so hard, is sooooo mean, and everything has to be literally perfect for you to get even a B assignments are long tests are so hard and quizzes online are easy but not on the test. so much reading o do, i went to every class and payed attention and still got a D. whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Her assignments are not that hard, but it is very hard to get an A on them. I tried my hardest on most of the assignments and the highest grade I got was a B. I struggled to get a C in this class it is NOT for people who struggle in the science department.
She is a tough teacher, but you learned a lot. As everyone has said, her assignments are hard. I assume most thought it was going to be an easy A since the course is online. If you want a class where minimal effort is required, avoid this prof. If you want to be challenged and learned something, give Dr. Strode at try. She give back what you put in
I did take a online class because it worked with my schedule. I have taken three other online science classes and did very well. I had interest going into this class but she is a awful teacher. She knows her stuff but expects you to know it too! I spent HOURS of time doing homework and felt great turning it in to then get 50/100 and no feedback.
I took her online class and I've never struggled so much in my life. You MUST turn in the homework in order to continue in the course. Her homework is really hard, you will spend hours doing it. She takes forever to grade them so by the time you have a test you still don't know if what you did was right or wrong.
If you aren't a science major or someone who struggles with science, do not take this processor! She grades as if you shold be a master at this class before even taking this class.
Class is pretty tough. But the professor is a joke... She is so disrespectful... Will embarrass you in front of the whole class if you ask a question or ask to get something clarified. She is also an extremely tough grader on labs. She will always find something to take points off for and make sure you don't receive an A.
Take her Job way to serious she will grade you as if your a Geologist at Harvard and never give you a straight forward answer to your question. Long story short look for a different teacher.
Do not take this class. Especially if you are not good in science. Whenever you go to ask for help she makes you feel stupid for not understanding what to do, loud enough for everyone to hear. She's an extremely hard grader, and takes points off for anything she can.
Worst class I have taken in my life (not kidding). The way she grades labs is unfair. She is mean to talk to a lot, only sometimes you are able to get a good conversation out of her or good answer. She expects way too much from her students. If you want your GPA to lower by all means take the class. If not, I suggest another class like Astronomy.
I'm an international student in a exchange program still learning english and she graded me as a veteran student from harvard. For extra credit you need to take another entire exam and when you have doubts she humiliates you in from of the class, making you feel as a stupid, which was even worst for me as a foreign student affecting in my grades.
Prof. Strode is really passionate about this subject which makes the class interesting. Quiz grades are E.C., labs are impossible, hardest grader ever, she takes points off for everything, and tests are okay. There is a study guide online, but it is 15 pages long. Only take if you are VERY interested and willing to put in a LOT of time and effort.
Professor Strode will act like she cares about the well-being of her students, but then turns around to make them feel stupid. In her class I felt afraid to ask questions at the risk of getting shut down immediately. Her lectures are long and she hardly gives you time to write down the material before moving on. She is very quick paced.
If you take notes on the power points and double check your work during the labs you should do fine as long as you read.
Toughest instructor I have ever had. I took Into to Earth Science and you would have thought this class was a 300 level course. Very tough grader. Must complete unit assignments in order to get the password for the unit quiz. She does give feedback on homework but it is just as confusing as the homework. Not a class you can be lazy in.
Overall one of the most toughest instructors I've ever had and you may put your full effort in and leave with a C, but all of that aside she treats you like a real college student and wants you to be engaged. It was incredibly difficult to get through her class but I have never learned more and been more inspired.
How someone could say something positive about this liberal woman is beyond me. She is SO petty, she will take off .25 for not using a period or your points on your graph could have been a 1mm higher. Her grading is extremely irrational. I wouldn't recommend her to my worst enemy. She does make you feel extremely stupid. If you take her, GOOD LUCK
By far the worst teacher I've ever had at COD. Many of us are taking earth science as a gen ed and aren't very good at science to begin with. She acts like we are taking this class because we are majoring in science. She's rude, mean, miserable, and a terrible teacher. She never answers your questions and makes you feel stupid.
Didn't like her in the slightest. When lecturing, she'll often utter the phrase "Are you with me?" Over the course of a 12-week semester, she has said it 964 times. Perhaps more, but that's what we counted. I would not recommend her, unless you really like hearing "are you with me?" literally a thousand times.
Extremely hard grader. Although I had her for a science class, it might as well been english too because she marks off points for grammar and punctuation. The study guides are harder than the actual test which helps to prepare you, but the tests are still difficult. She is also rude and looks down on people for "dumb questions" or wrong answers.
Very mean, one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Homework takes 5+ hours to complete, If you arnt an english major you WILL NOT pass this class. You get more points taken off for grammer rather your actual response. Has no problem failing half the class. Very disrespectful instructor, will talk down to you.
She thinks it's normal for an INTRO class to not do better than a C. She wants the answers SHE wants, regardless of what the text says. It was so disappointing to genuinely want to learn something only to be told it's not expected of you to do well. She is more concerned with you being wrong than actually helping you learn. Worst professor ever.
Legit taking this online and it's hard for no actual reason. I am not a Earth science major, so why should I be putting this much time and energy into a intro level prereq? Her assignments are such a waste of time and her tests are beyond illogical. Do yourself a favor and not take her unless you want to be sad all the time.
tests are tough. basically have to teach yourself everything. grades only depend on tests & homework assignments. the book doesn't help with the assignments. rewords things to make it confusing. takes a while to give graded assignments back. really have to work for your grade and understand the material. 8 assignments. 4 tests. need new access code
She is an amazing teacher. Shes really sweet and caring and actually helps you. She is a tough grader obviously but she sees the potential in you, and honestly everyone should take her classes. Especially her oceanography class. Theres hands on learning and its something she really cares about and enjoys teaching which makes it more fun to learn
For your own sake DONT take her class. You will have to teach yourself. Her assignments are 10 pages long or more and you have up to about 12 in a semester. And if you ask for any help or clarification she either calls you out in front of the class or makes you feel horrible and dumb. Also beware to hear "are you with me? yes? no?" 40 times a day.
Not only is Strode's expectations too high for Earth Sci 1140/1141, but the material covered on the test does not accurately reflect the lectures, labs, and books. Avoid this teacher. I switched to Sutherland. Much better experience although still a bit hard. She is also very rude.
I have never had a teacher that grades this awful and scrutinizes almost every answer by taking off points and then belittling you in front of the class when you ask a question. If you can avoid this class do it. Horrible teacher. She has you do homework in groups but its pointless, you will find out why quickly. No need to even do groups at all.
read the reviews, pretty much sums it up for me
She is one of the toughest graders I've ever had in my life. With that said, I luckily enjoyed the material we were learning. If you want to pass Oceanography with her, you really have to be there every day and work for it .
Diane is a sweet woman but for an intro class we all failed basically. The grading is tough. You have to put it in her words or you wont get credit. Also you need to spell everything right. The tests are hard and when you ask questions she really doesnt answer. We worked together on a lot of stuff with the smart kid and still all made Ds on labs
Shes the toughest grader. She doesnt not care about her students and she is lazy. She doesnt teach you anything. NOT caring and if you are having trouble she basically tells you to get over it. Do not take her at all. Her assignments are confusing and long! Not for the teaching profession.
People say she is tough and unforgiving but I beg to differ. I had a situation with my family and did not take the final test. I went from a 94% to a 77% overnight. She not only reopened the test but granted an extension when I couldn't even do the briefly reopened test. She for sure makes you work for it but she is more than willing to help.
Professor Strode is one of the most accommodating professors I've ever had. She clearly cares for her students and is a very nice person. Although the class itself is a little difficult, its doable. I would definitely take her classes again.
I took a class with Diane and right after i started i regretted it- she doesn't teach and is a VERY hard grader. She has many homework assignments (21 throughout the semester) and 4 tests. The tests are extremely difficult, and she makes you learn on your own, instead of teaching. and she repeats the same phrases like "are you with me" like uh no
I would never recommend anybody ever take this woman as a teacher. She is uncaring and does not respect any of her students. Even throughout the entire Covid-19 thing, she wouldn't cut any students slack and she was just seen as a mean and annoying professor the students really couldn't handle.
I love this subject, so was motivated. Regularly pulled all-nighters w another studious peer, we'd bring questions in "I see the answer is in this sentence/paragraph, but I'm not understanding how it relates/why exactly it works that way, can you please explain it?" Glare, shrug, "It's in the book" is the only answer we ever got. She doesn't teach.
