BEST teacher ever! Very organized and you feel very prepared for exams. Great guest lectures and her lectures are extremely interesting! Tests are very fair! She definitely knows her stuff
i agree with the previous comment 100%
Awesome prof with organized lectures, interesting guest speakers, and a great personality. Exams were very fair and we were well prepared for them. Thanks Diane!
very interesting lectures and guest speakers!! she really knows her stuff!
Great Prof! Very funny and interesting. Her stories are hilarious and she keeps the class awake! She is VERY clear on what will be on the exams!
Excellent prof, helpful, funny, very clear as to what to study, would love to take more of her classes.
Great instructor! Easy to look at too.
THE BEST TEACHER I"VE HAD SO FAR
Great class atmosphere. Really good class examples and notes. Tests were straight-forward, you didn't have to guess what she was asking.
Good class to take if you can do well with multiple guess exams. Great guest speakers and very interesting lectures.
Well organized , many examples, videos, life experiences, great intro teacher!
Great prof, very organized, great notes. The exams are applied learning, know how to apply the theories and ideas and you will do well. Great informarion and she has real life experience!
Amazing prof ... almost had me changing my life path. Great eteachign methods, relates everything to real life, she has amazing life experiences and brings in amazing guest lectures and videos to help clarify main topics. If you got her you are so very lucky, they dont make 'em liek this anymore
Diane Symbaluk was an intrigueing profesor with excellent real-life examples to compliment the course curriculum. She was friendly, easy to talk to and very knowledgeable. My favorite professor, not only at Grant MacEwan, but also at the UofA. I would take a class just because she was the teacher!
Dr. Symbaluk is smart, funny, entertaining, and presents course material in a way that highlights the relevance of sociology in the real world. It also doesn't hurt that she has conducted sociological experiments, so she has firsthand knowledge of key concepts. She's very approachable and attempts to clarify anything you ask about. And, she's hot
Diane was a great teacher. She is very passionate on what she teaches and knows what she is doing. You need to be in class though as alot of her tests are based on in-class lectures and discussions. I've never seen her on a off day, seems to maintain a good level of emotion.
the most amazing teacher! totally changed my life! she is charismatic helpful funny and so easy going...she tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for the exam...PLEASE DO IT FOR ME AND GO INTO HER CLASS...best choice you'll ever make
Diane is an awesome prof! Her exams are not difficult if you study, and material that has the potential to be very dry is presented in a very interesting manner. She is willing to answer questions in and out of the classroom. Take Criminology with her!
What a great lady!! I did find her explaining of concepts a tad boring sometimes, but she is nothing short of a treasure. Gives you lots of study questions and examples, and if you focus on those, you will succeed in her class. She's helpful, funny, and GREAT at getting discussions going! As a side note she's good to look at too!
Don't take an introductory sociology class with anyone else but Dr. S! 2 years later I'm still using what she taught me in that class (I've noticed university tends to be the same concepts over and over but in greater detail). If you start with a good foundation, you're all set! She can certainly provide this and much more.
I find she tries to be nice to the group, but not so much as to the individual. Or maybe it was just me? She also loves herself too much.. you will see what i mean if you have her as a prof.
Diane is the best teacher at Grant Mac. I have her my first sem at G mac and she is awesome. Her lectures are very interesting and uses other sources extremely well. It is easy to do well if you attend class, because she often uses attendance activities on her tests. GET THIS TEACHER if you want to do well, but you have to be motivated.
Very nice prof - uses a lot of her experience in research to capture your attention. Very helpful if you see her during office hour. Likes Battlestar Galactica!
great professor knows her stuff. dont get anyone else. but she will probably show you this site on your first day of class and act like shes never been here before
she almost comes off as cocky, because on the first day she asks about ratemyprofessors as if she knows nothing about it.She wants you to know that she's awesome, and that's not so bad i guess. She tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on the exam. Remember, the most violent movie ever produced was Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles.yes, you heard me right.
Awesome Prof. She has a way to keep you engaged to what she is teaching, even the material that is dry she somehow turns it interesting. She tells you exactly what is on the exam and her exams are very fair. You have to work in this class its not a free ride, but if you follow what she says you will ace this class. Take this class from her,the best!
Great class, really interesting. You definitely need to attend class in order to get a good grade, she does not post her notes.
Diane's teaching style is a breath of fresh air. She is very clear on her expectations. She prepares you well for her exams and all of her exams are straight forward and fair. She doesn't throw any surprises at you, but you do need to know your stuff and her question do make you think. Take crim with her, you will not regret it.
Good prof, enjoyed coming to her class usually ended up laughing in most classes. Prepares you well for exams and is a really nice teacher..take a class with her!
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Symbaluk is a fabulous prof with a zest for Sociology which makes her classes entertaining and enjoyable! She really excels at making the material applicable to her students and very understandable. I have taken a few classes with Dr. Symbaluk and would highly reccomend her to anybody!
Seminar classes tend to be dull and boring. NOT with Dr. Symbaluk!!! She makes the class entertaining and interactive while pushing her students to incorporate their sociological knowledge to new and untouched areas. She helped us explore and apply our skills in creative and fun ways! I highly reccommend you take a class with her if you have can!
Any1 would b lucky 2 have Diane she's the best of the best and really has a passion 4 teaching she's always willing 2 help her students succeed and prepares u well 4 her exams She makes class enjoyable and uses a variety of different methods to keep things interesting her teaching style is designed to have something for every type of learner
Great teacher. Helped me with a couple of my papers when I wasn;t entirely sure of what area I was going in. She provided me with some valuable resources that helped me focus my area of research. Extremely knowledgeable and patient. She gave the class enough time to discuss their papers and enables the students to provide feedback/grade each other.
She provides some variety with the lectures by showing some videos, her lectures are clear, tests are not hard. Interesting class.
she is AMAZING. The tests werent too hard and she uses a lot of different ways to teach, powerpoint, videos, in class experiments. During midterms we had in class study periods and she would give you a candy for just reading the question out loud. I am changing some of my courses so I can have her again.
Good teacher but she gives way too much busy work. Good class tho.
Diane is a fun prof. Her exams are not difficult if you study off her notes.
Personally sociology isn't my favourite class. However I am doing extremely well in Diane's class. The class notes and the text book are in sync, but you still have to read the textbook. Attend class regularly because she tests you on the videos and discussions in class. Easy gpa booster.
AWESOME prof. Coming from social stats (210) and doing terrible, thought I wouldn't do well in this class. But that wasn't the case. She's very helpful, makes an otherwise boring class very interesting with examples, handouts, movies, and stories. Labs were also well done. Made them pretty easy if you knew what to do.
Awesome prof!!! very helpful!! gives lots of examples and does her best to make the course interesting. She is also very understanding of life events and just wants her students to succeed!! I definitely would take a course with her again
She is one of the best profs I've had in uni so far, and this was one of my favourite classes. Her lectures are interesting and engaging, easy to follow, she puts lots on blackboard, lots of overhead notes, they're clear and logical, her tests follow from what we learned in class, and she's personable and smart. She uses guest lecturers and movies!
Love that she is the author of the text so the material in the text and discussed in class is almost identical. She's such an easy marker and will adjust the total after marking to raise the students grades. Tests are very easy to begin with tho. Course is interesting but easy because a lot of it is common sense.
Yes , Yes, and Yes! 1. The class is easy, attend lectures and read the book and u will reap the rewards 2. she is easy on the eyes 3. She gives free marks on exams !! YES its all true , it doesn't get easier than that in a uni class ! Saving grace for academic and non- academic students -Do I recommend ? YES !!
AMAZING. I had no interest in sociology prior to taking her class being a science student but she definitely sparked my interest. Her lectures are super interesting and she shows the best videos that really help to drive the material through your head. CLEAR learning objectives and great guest speakers. Wish I could have her for all my soc classes.
Best sociology prof. If you can get her for intro sociology you will not regret it. Very knowledgeable and expectations are clear. Helpful during office hours and best of all notes are all online! However you still need to attend lectures as they will be tested on exams. Easy GPA booster. Highly Recommended.
Love her. One of the best profs I've had, attend class and you'll do great, and if you don't go and look at the guide outline she lays it out for you.
One of the best profs i have ever had! You think that a research methods class would be boring but she makes it quite enjoyable. Basically the hardest part of the class is the final project, but she is awesome for help. Honestly one of my fav classes, and not to mention she is a total babe!
I love her! I took my first soci class with her and she convinced me to make it my major. I'm taking her again for research methods and she makes it straight forward and relatable. I'm taking her again next semester, she helped me get through my degree! Plus she's a babe and great person! She's totally helpful and wants her students to do well
She is awesome! Her notes are posted online and she gives you almost a month including class time to work on the big research report due at the end of the semester.
She is a great professor, makes the class really engaging. Tests are fair, you can tell that she wants her students to succeed
Diane is the best prof in macewan. Her lectures are very interesting, and exams are really easy as long as you read the textbook.
Diane's the best choice for Qualitative Methods. She's devoted to her students, wants the best for you to succeed, has clear expectations and her assignments give you valuable skills & experience. She's great to discuss your interests with. Couldn't ask for better guidance by any other prof. I wouldn't love methods this much if it weren't for her.
Diane is a great professor. She is smart, funny and invested in her students. She has a well-rounded approach to teaching methods, and her lectures were supplemented by guest appearances from several other sociology profs. If you pay attention to her notes and grading criteria, it's easy to get a good grade. I would take this class again!
Best prof at Macewan. Would easily take again.
An OK class considering the topics. She was OK but don't get on her bad side. She is much more laid back in her office if u have questions. Easy B or A if u go to class and talk.
Great teacher- just don't get on her bad side. Her lectures are amazing and had some cool guest speakers/documentaries every week! Her tests are definitely challenging and she tests on textbook stuff and what she says in class, so make sure to go to class! She gives really good learning objectives for tests too! Overall I would definitely recommend
She is great. I really enjoyed her class and learnt a lot from her. She invites really interesting guest speakers and her own lectures are amazing as well.
Diane is the bomb. She clearly explains her expectations and requirements. This was my favourite class in my entire degree. You do have to put in the effort, but you have all the creative freedom you want. You get to write and present on topics that interest YOU and build your skills. This was my third class with Diane, she's so helpful!!
LOVE this class. SO many useful and real life research skills. Diane makes research interesting, and her projects are awesome. Show up for class, she explains everything she expects for assignments in explicit detail and is ALWAYS available to help outside of class. If you can take this course or any course with Diane- do it. You won't regret it.
I found her a bit intimidating but she is one of the top social researchers in Canada and I loved her unfiltered lectures: I don't think I've come across a prof that 'keeps it real' as much as she does. The course aligns with the textbook nearly perfectly since she wrote it. The final project was dreadful but will mould you into a better student.
This class was by far the most educational and inspiring towards my future in the correctional field. This class is a self taught seminar with absolutely NO mandatory readings! You are able to explore the areas of sociology that are of the most interest to you. If you have any questions about the course I highly recommend you email Diane!
Diane structured this class in a very powerful way that had everyone in class engaged in deep introspection by the end of the course. I was unsure about how the course would go at first and how much I would really learn, but I thoroughly developed my presentation skills and confidence and I truly feel like a better person coming out of her course.
Diane is one of the best profs I have had in MacEwan, she was very helpful in answering questions outside and in class. She was to the point with her lectures and the textbook she wrote. She gives good feedback on the assignments and emails within a couple of hours back even if it was at 10PM.
The best prof I've ever had. Diane is amazing at keeping lecture interesting and is more than willing to help out for projects and even out of class stuff research. LOVELOVELOVE her, so kind and sweet, also her outfits inspire me to dress better every day. Diane genuinely cares about her students and i wish every prof was like her
Dr. Symbaluk is an amazing prof. She truly cares about each person, and if you come to class you are guaranteed a good grade on your final research paper because she is there to help you every step of the way. I was SO intimidated to take Methods, but she made it enjoyable, and I am actually quite good at something I never thought I would be!
Diane's main focus is on helping you. You can tell she's there for you and she's willing to use her high-standing reputation to help you get published, win scholarships, etc. I was worried about this class, and although it is a lot of work, Diane literally personally walks you through the whole process of methods and gives great feedback :)
I Highly recommend taking this class with Symbaluk. Do not take this class (or any University class...) if you are not willing to put the work in. Easy A if you study her learning objectives, powerpoint slides and read the textbook. Gives out a bonus mark per midterm, which is usually based on videos or lesser-known concepts covered in class.
Easily one of the most amazing profs I've had in my university career. She is really passionate and it rubs off on everyone else in class. I took the class as an option class but it really made me want to explore sociology and the topics we discussed in greater detail. Super awesome lady, I recommend her if you want an easy, fun, and fair class! :)
It's a show-up & pass kind of course. Can easily get a 3.0 or higher with minimal effort.
By far the fairest professor the world has ever seen. Takes no bs from students, but if someone is to point out an unfair question, she will most likely to remove it from the exam. 2 midterms, a final and an easy A paper if you just put a little effort into it AND stay in the 3-page length. Take notes on the videos you watch in class!
She is a solid choice for Soci 225. I highly recommend following her learning objective which is a study guide. At the end she provides a study guide for the final which is helpful.
Kind of awkward but knows her stuff. An easy marker. On midterms, she'll ask you to note any ambiguous questions, and if she agrees with you she'll regrade everyone's exams to give extra marks on that question. She tests on examples and videos shown in class, but if you know the other material, it won't impact your grade much if you miss any of it.
This was definitely one of the best profs I've had. She was very thorough with expectations and her marking. She took the time to answer any questions in detail. The large paper was a final for the course and if you go to class she will help you every step of the way. I didn't think I would like research and I loved this class. Highly recommend!
The best professor Ive ever had. Diane is AMAZING. If you get the chance to take her class, do it. Shes so unbiased and takes time marking and ensures the grading is fair on every assignment. If I could take all my classes with her I would. She also uses a variety of teaching methods which help you understand every concept.
10/10 recommend this class. I took it as an elective and loved it. Diane is great. Gives a direct study guide for both midterms and final. Follow that and its an easy A. The small paper is very great for a grade booster as well, follow the outline and easy marks there. Defs take this class if you get the chance.
She was so nice, she really goes above and beyond for her students. She will reply to your message even if it's at like 2 am. she does everything she can to help you understand the course material, provides personal examples in class, she's also hilarious. It makes the class 10x more interesting and makes you want to attend.
She's a very fair professor. Willing to go above and beyond for her students. She provides reliable study guides and powerpoints are posted to blackboard in advance. She doesn't usually use test bank questions on her exams and they are very much tied into what was covered in class. If you show up and are engaged, you'll leave learning a lot.
The class itself is literally the definition of pointless. If I reflect back to this class I can confidently say I did not take anything useful away from this class. Half the class is learning theory and the other half are watching videos and useless guest presentations (Dale was awesome though). Thanks for nothing.
Amazing & organized prof, hope I get to take more classes with her. Really teaches the topic of criminology well with guest presentations & videos. She provides study guides for everything you need to know for exams. If class doesn't do well on one or two questions, she'll remove it. There's a small paper as grade booster.
Wow if you can't pass her class, then you are doing something major wrong. This woman has won teaching awards!! Take her class!! I had her for 2 classes in one semester, both a couple hours apart and I never got sick of her. The textbook helped to fully understand topics as she posts slides but not very detailed, so just go to class! She's the best
Diane is one of the most straightforward profs in all of Macewan, and that is a great thing. You will be best prepared for the class to read the textbook and show up to all the classes for the midterms. The final project she will provide feedback that really helps as you aim to complete it. Show up and pay attention and you will thrive.
I entered the class expecting it to be an easy A because of the reviews here. This was my own fault. You have to put work into this class. I found myself getting frustrated with the assignments because I would get marks taken off for things that were not specified in the assignment outline. Same for the exams.
Dr. Symbaluk is one of my favourite profs at MacEwan. She is really clear about her expectations and if you attend lectures, read the book chapters, exams are quite easy (she's definitely not out to trick you). Assignments were also straightforward, and her grading fair (w/feedback!) and she gets everything graded and back to you quickly.
Diane is absolutely AMAZING! I've had her for 2 courses (SOCI 225 and 315) and would love to take another class with her. Instruction and expectations are very clear. Everything is graded quickly and fairly with lots of helpful feedback. You can tell she loves teaching and she goes above and beyond to help her students (related to class or not).
This course online was based solely on the online interactive textbook service Revel. Each module had little quizzes throughout and discussion postings at the end. Very easy concepts and the format of the textbook was super useful! Very easy A!!!
I was admittedly quite intimated to take this class; however, Diane made it such a breeze. Despite not having physical class (Covid), she went above and beyond to make this enjoyable. Its not an overly difficult class if youre willing to put the work in. The quality of feedback on assignments is the best I have ever received in university.
Diane is truly a wonderful prof! Very entertaining lectures, especially those that included her personal experiences with the concepts. The course consisted of a weekly assignment varying from discussion posts to quizzes to relatively small reflections/projects. Gives detailed feedback, cares a lot about her students, and tells you how to succeed!
Diane is awesome, truly I mean that! If you are looking for a easy A- to A+ take her sociology classes. She is really open to other peoples thoughts and opinions on discussion posts, and as long as you put effort in she will notice that and give you a really good grade on written assignments. HIGHLY RECOMMEND DIANE TO ANYONE!
Diane is a true gem! I took her fall 2021, and the entire course was online, so only quizzes and discussion posts were the graded materials for the class. Super easy, just read the textbook and take notes, and she grades straightforward too. She respects controversial opinions and recognizes when you work hard, and is super encouraging throughout.
She makes the online class really simple to follow. Just follow along with the material and you should get a good grade
Professor Symbaluk is so passionate about sociology. Her lectures are clear, funny, and engaging. She checks up with emails and gives amazing feedback even if it's on a discussion post. I absolutely loved her class.
Diane is such an excellent prof. the textbook (she wrote it) is so well done and easy to follow, along with her straightforward lectures it's honestly impossible to do bad in this class, as long as you put in effort. your effort does not go unnoticed with this prof!! she is the best, i would 100% take this class again
This prof is the best I have had at MacEwan. She is caring and wants us to do well. She gives clear instructions on assignments and genuinely wants students to succeed. Her lectures are engaging and interesting- which is not what I would expect for a methods class. Show up, read the textbook (that she wrote) and you will do great.
Honestly one of the best profs I have ever had. She is always there for help and gives grades/ feedback back super fast. She is super fair in her grading and gives hints to questions in her lectures so that's basically free marks. Also makes classes super engaging and fun by doing little experiments during lectures. Would def recommend
(accidentally put difficult in my last rating but she wasn't) Honestly 1 of the best profs I have had. Always there for help and gives grades/ feedback back super fast. Super fair grader and gives hints to questions in her lectures so that's basically free marks. Also makes classes super engaging and fun by doing little experiments during lectures
Her feedback is good and she is a fast marker. Easy to reach her after class and she replies to emails immediately. The lectures she gives are amazing, she is always smiling and passionate about teaching. It would be great if she taught a 400-level sociology course so I could take her again. A professor like her is a rare find at MacEwan.
Best prof Ive ever had 100% take her class. She genuinely wants all of her students to do well. She has very clear grading criteria. 3 exams and 1 paper. she gives you the option to explain yourself on MC questions and will mark them right if you understand the theory and can argue your choice. I cannot say enough good things about her!!
She was one of the kindest professors I ever had. I truly enjoyed her class and her teaching style. She really wanted everyone to do well, I would100% recommend everyone to take her class.
Great professor, many interesting guests to add to the content of this course, Diane lays out exactly what you need to do well in the class and the exams are quite easy. Would recommend this prof and class to anyone interested in Criminology.
I had Dr. Symbaluk for Sociology 315 and again for Capstone. I got an A and an A+ in her classes. She's an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. Her lectures are clear, her feedback is helpful, and she always supports us in reaching our goals. I'm graduating this year, but I'll really miss her- she was amazing. KT
