What is with the free writing. Too much work for a gen-ed. She treats you like you are in high school. She actually checked to make sure we had notebooks. Get over yourself Diane.
She's awesome. very down-to-earth, surprisingly lewd at times, and loves to crack jokes about her students. You can tell she used to be a party girl. Journals are about the only part of the class I didn't like, but even they're easier than normal journals. Highly recommended.
Tomko is very enthusiastic about her subject matter. She has a passion that can be as funny as it is annoying. She's a good teacher, you will learn a lot. Take her class, she makes it easier than most, and she can be fun. She reminds me a lot of a high school english teacher, but the class is worth taking, especially since you have to.
Free writing is a huge pain if you save it until the last day, try and do some once in a while. Besides that, if you read and pay attention lightly in class you should do well. Very nice teacher.
the best teacher i have ever had at Ramapo. She is very intelligent and a so much fun in class. The only comment that i have is that she might have been 2 easy on the kids that didnt care. She assigned some of the hardest readings but was bale 2 tie everthing together really well. TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Even if you don't read the assigned books, she goes over everything you need to know for the midterm/final/papers. Most of the assigned writings are basically your opinions on different issues that come up within the themes of the books. During exams, she lets you use your novels. She is reasonable with make-up exams/papers. She's cool.
These ratings are a complete lie. She's a tough grader. Her class is boring. Never get out early. Makes you do 4 journals a week, which is impossible to catch up on if you don't keep up. They have to be HANDWRITTEN, not typed, and 1 page each. I fall asleep every time I go. Her tests are hard even if you're prepared. Don't take EVER!
Uh, what papers?
People aren't lying. She is a tough grader and teacher. But, she's very nice and helpful. She also explains everything in class. 4 journal entries a week that have to be 250 words each is definitely rough but it makes you do the readings and helps in the long run. She's also make you a better writer. Take her, she's a cool lady.
She's nice and will make you a better writer, but it's not worth it! You have to write four 250 word journal entries a week...and it IS hard to keep up with. She grades really tough, and she has ridiculous expectations. Her papers suck. Don't take her class unless you REALLY love writing and you wanna work your ass off.
she has a great sense of humor and makes class fun. shes a tough grader but her class is worth it. 4 journals a week and 2-3 papers. midterm and final. i enjoyed her class a lot.
This class was a joke. Nobody wanted to do any work, and every time she assigned homework, only a handful of people had actually read. The work is just so boring. She rambles on and on and never lets you out on time. I got caught sleeping in her class, and she held a grudge when grading my papers! I barely passed because of it. DO NOT TAKE!!!
She is not very difficult, 2 Essays, Midterm/Final are similar to the review sheets, however there is a Journal and she expects 4 entries a week and it is a huge pain. Her book choices are good, except she is ridiculously dull sometimes. She on many occasions has read to the class for 30/40 minutes. BORING.
I don't get all these people who say her quizes are hard. They're really not. 10 short answers, and she practically gives you the answers to them if you've read and taken notes. The journals do suck, but over all shes great. She makes an 8-11 class bareable. Take her class.
This was the best professor I've had so far. She made class so interesting and I actually learned a lot from her. The only thing bad I would say is that it's almost impossible to get an A on a paper. Other than that, her grading is fair and the quizzes are easy. Great professor.. I recommend anyone to take her.
She is a nice professor, and this class is not too difficult although there is a lot of reading required. She lets you fix your papers after she grades them, and her quizzes aren't too hard as long as you study, so it is easy to get a good grade overall. Sometimes this class can be pretty boring though.
She is the best! She is so fun and makes class interesting. She makes sure you can really understand the work before moving on. There is a lot of reading and a lot of writing, but all of the papers and tests she hands back and lets you revise and try for a better grade. She really wants all of her students to pass and does everything she can to hel
she is the best!!! not many people know her since she only teaches one class, but she is truly a hidden gem. she's crude, down to earth, makes class interesting, and REALLY helped my writing. she's a bit difficult, but lets you revise. i love her!!
She just AMAZING! I only took the class because it completed a GenEd, but she truly made it interesting and fun. A bit of reading a writing, but nothing hard at all! She has a quick wit, and is seriously an interesting professor! I would totally take her again!
She is a really nice and teaches you a lot but you have to do the work to do good in the class. assigns 4 journals a week (handwritten 250 words, she actually counts) lots of reading but only a few essays hard grader but lets you revise only take her if you don't mind doing all the readings and the work or you probably wont do well.
Awesome teacher! Absolutely take her for english; she is fun, witty and has sarcastic humor. She also lets you revise your papers for a better grade. Easy teacher, just do the 4 journals (250 words) a week and your homework and you'll be fine. The final is easy and there aren't any tests or quizzes. Best teacher I've had! =]
She is a must AVOID!! She is really nice. Don't get me wrong. But she has no designated office hours so you must schedule an appointment. BUT she doesn't e-mail you back for at least 3 days. And the amount of work she assigns is over the top. All my other grades are suffering because of her work load. Kiss your life goodbye for the semester.
Awesome :D There are a lot of journals: 52 pages worth. a few essays at about 5 pages each, so not too bad, but a lot of reading. your writing Will improve. She's funny, but if you have an 8am class you won't be awake enough to laugh! I definitely recommend taking her, I got a lot out of the class and she made the material all the more enjoyable :)
It is a lot of work, but you're in college, aren't you? Just because you pay the tuition doesn't mean that you will just be handed a diploma. She is an amazing teacher who reviews every topic with you thoroughly enough that you don't necessarily have to read the books. If you choose not to, paying attention and participating will do the trick too.
Great professor, very relatable, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Although, it's not an easy class and takes a lot of work and self discipline. If you fall behind on reading and on the four journals per week it's very hard to catch up at the end of the semester.
Great professor. You will learn alot. do the work! ! the journals count.
It was a 3hr, 8am class but she made it go by faster than you think it would. The readings are really interesting and she constantly makes jokes, innuendos, comments etc... that are actually pretty funny. Make sure to do the journals though. She really enjoys what she's doing and her attitude is quite infectious!
This class is not easy. There are easier professors for this course. However, if you do the work and participate in class, you will learn something. My writing improved greatly, although it was my hardest course so far.
She is okay. I hated the class itself and thought it was really boring. The fact that the class isn't mandatory made it really difficult to go to. She is one TOUGH grader. Forget everything you learned in CRWT 2 because what she wants is so different. She is nice and all but i would never recommend this class. Ever.
Great class. Requires effort. Tomko is a difficult grader but very helpful with any questions you may have. A lot of reading but if you go to class, she goes through the almost chapter by chapter so you really don't have to read. class is not mandatory. Amazing person and teacher and cares about her students if you show effort.
Very good professor. Three papers, a midterm and a final, a semester-long journaling project, and CEC. Read five playsnovels. With effort, you can get a good grade and learn a considerable amount.
Tomko was beyond wonderful , the lady took her time to make sure every student understood the lesson
She does not realize that students take classes OTHER than hers! She gives way too much work and she's a tough grader! I ended up dropping her class and will retake with a better professor who was recommended by friends.
Tomko is a great person, but an ok professor. I would definitely take her again, but I would have definitely worked harder. You have three exams all year, five essays, a semester long journal project and one short presentation. If you work, you'll get a good grade. If you slack, she will fail you. Get on her good side and she is extremely lenient..
She's terrible. Ridiculous grader. Makes you redo a whole paper just for some grammatical errors. So many other professors that are better and easier. She's ridiculous and doesn't realize that students take other classes. Choose another professor.
You need to work for your grade in this class. If you actually want to learn, however, definitely take her. Her lectures (which typically go for about three of the three and a half hours) are quite enlightening and captivating. You will have a great grasp of the books she assigns. You need to do your work though. Take her!
Funniest professor I've ever had. She is a very tough grader, but you learn a lot in her class. She is very nice and will help you if you ask for it. Overall, I enjoyed her class even though I had to work for my grade.
3 difficult papers, 3 exams and 52 250 word journal entries. Gives you the chance to redo your papers as well as the first exam. Does not take attendance. You don't have to read the works because you can get by listening in class and reading spark notes. She is annoying (will interrupt you while you're taking a test to stretch). Avoid at any cost.
Great professor! Easy to talk to, understanding and hilarious. Interesting lecutres as well as material that she teaches. The workload is hard, especially if you have a lot of other responsibilities (aka classes/work/personal life) however it's good that she doesn't take attendance. Would take her again!
Great person and teacher. She has been teaching for a LONG time so don't expect to pull any slick student tricks on her without getting caught. Will definitely go out of her way to help you out though.
ya u a good one
Remember this is an english class so you will be doing lots of reading and writing. At first you may not like her but after two classes you will love her! She is super chill and understanding. Submit all papers even if they're late. You will need to read in order to do well on the tests!!! Super caring and super funny. Makes this sucky class fun!
I had Tomko for Readings in the Humanities and as much as I respected and liked her as a person- do not take this class. Compared to other professors who teach this class, she gives A LOT of work. 3 tests, a research project, 3 papers and 4 250 journal entries per week.
If you actually want to become a better writer, then she is a must. She is very critical when grading, and her feedback on your papers will make you a better writer. That being said, if you don't want to become a better writer, don't take her class. Besides these points, she is very nice and is hilarious at times during her lectures.
I took this professor last semester for Readings in Poetry. The only issue I had with the class was how much we had to write for the journals she wanted us to keep; though the journals are a fun dynamic of the class, they could get in the way of other course work so be prepared to set aside time to get everything done. Besides that, she was awesome
Work load compared to others that I've heard for Readings in Humanities is more with Tomko HOWEVER she is such a good professor. So witty and smart and I am so happy I had the opportunity to take her. If you do everything she asks you'll get an A.
I'm not going to lie, she assigns a lot of work and can be a bit of a tough grader, but I think it's all really worth it. She's incredibly funny and makes the class interesting and she really loves what she teaches! She may seem intimidating at first but if you pay attention and work hard, you can really improve in her class.
She gives you a ton of work, both reading and writing, but also I would die for her without hesitation.
Tomko is a very analytical grader but she will 100% improve your writing and overall understanding of the class. She gives chances to redo papers, accepts late work, and doesn't take attendance. BUT get ready for a lot of work. Reading (a lot) and especially journals. If you pay attention and do NOT procrastinate, you'll do fine.
Great person, but I wouldn't take her class again because of my poor time management skills. She has one huge assignment that you're supposed to work on throughout the semester, but she doesn't check until the end. And because it's handwritten, it's VERY hard to do last minute. So she wasn't a good fit for me, but nice lady and great teacher.
Prof Tomko is great! She's super funny and genuinely wants you to do well in the class. There's a lot of reading and papers, but you will 100% improve as a writer if you take this class. Lectures can get boring though and she doesn't take attendance, but she definitely knows who's participating and who isn't.
Tomko is absolutely ridiculous about grading papers. And when you don't do well on her assignments, she is very condescending like she knows better than anyone else. Do not take this professor if you can help it. If you have to take this professor, get a writing tutor because I promise you're going to need it. Good luck!
For a 200 level gen ed, Professor Tomko assigns an insane amount of work for her Arts & Humanities class (Aiid201). 6 books to read, 4 essays, 3 exams, 52 journals (250 words each) and 1 research project. She frequently skips office hours and doesn't respond to emails. The stress was unbearable; Avoid at all costs!
Nice lady but can be nasty and is the toughest grader ever. Picks apart everything you submit and very rarely gives out good grades. The quizzes and essays seem easy until you get them back and see your grade. She expects so much of her students its ridiculous because its just a gen ed. Do not take her.
she is so passionate and makes the class so interesting but we do have to read a few books but as long as you read the summaries and her lectures you can definitely pass. also take notes on what she says about the characters and her power points and easy A
I love love love her. This class requires a decent amoun of reading but the professor spaces them out and creates a clear timeline to help you get it done. There is also a decent amount of writing but once again it is spaced out and has helped me become a better writer. She grades and add comments on your papers so you understand how to get better.
She's a great person and definitely cares about you passing, but the workload is not worth it. She's lecture heavy and talks endlessly about each class's readings, posts WEEKLY journals (4 entries, 250 words/ea.), tons of homework, and lots of papers. She expects way too much from this general ed class.. this is the most work I've ever had.
She was a very kind person, but she was a tough grader. If you are not good at writing you will need to go to the writing center or hire a writing tutor. However, I think your writing will improve throughout the semester. She gave out a lot of assignments and she took too long to grade them. Everything was graded towards the end of the semester.
Tomko is one of my favorite profs. She reads the readings in class so even if you don't do it on your own, you know what you need to. Her material is interesting and her persona is very fun, so even if the class goes late, at least it's not boring. Her syllabus is very clear and no pop quizzes. If I could take her class again, I would
Professor Tomko is one of the few professors I had that adapted her course and material to the online structure well as a result of the pandemic. She is a very interesting, engaging professor that makes learning about even the most boring of stories fun. The reading and writing looks like a lot on paper, but it actually is not that bad.
Tomko is very understandable with late work. The reading and work seems like a lot, but it actually is not that bad. She gives great feedback, explains things thoroughly, and I think she has improved my writing a lot.
Professor Tomko was amazing, she always seemed like she cared about every student and didn't just mindlessly lecture like most professors. She tries to make writing as fun as possible, while yes there is a lot of reading and writing assignments throughout the semester most of it isn't that difficult. She was also very understanding to missed work.
Professor Tomko was the best!!! She is so nice and sweet, absolutely loved her. Class is very heavy on the readings and moves extremely fast but do the readings and you will be fine. No exams but 5 essay papers over the span of 6 novels. Overall take, professor she's perfect!!!!
Professor Tomko's class might be pretty reading heavy but at least she is there to help whenever you need it. Her feedback is super clear and if you correct your essays and actually pay attention to her notes, you'll be fine.
There is a lotttt of reading and a lot of papers in this class. Funny & caring professor just a lot of work.
I thought the course load was fine and professor tomko is hilarious and raunchy in the best way. The only thing I would change is her grammar worksheet things because they were annoying but just keep up with the reading or don't because sparknotes.
She is a nice lady. Good sense of humor. But on top of the work she gives us, to then going to class which is very boring, is not worth it. The journals she gives us every week (4 journals, 250 words each) feels like enough homework as it is, yet she'll give other homework on top of that. It was like we didn't have any other classes.
Tomko is a nice lady but she gives an overwhelming amount of homework and reading. She grades very tough on essays and grammar exercises. Every week journal entries are due. She also takes forever to grade.
Funny and nice professor, and lectures aren't too boring. A lot of books to read and a lot of writing assignments, such as four journal entries due weekly and these writing assignments to help work on grammar. Several essays to complete, and final exam is somewhat generous as you are given many options on what essay to write. A bit challenging
Professor Tomko is absolutely amazing. Her assignments consist of a Journal with 4 entries in it (each being 250 words) due each week, and one Writing Craft assignment due that week as well. There are 4 essays due within the semester, but no quizzes or any other exams except a final exam. She is very entertaining and is lenient with submitting work
Professor Tomko is a nice lady, but her class is too much work. The journals, the books we had to read, plus essays and writing crafts, a research project, plus going to a play and writing an additional essay were just over the top. I was doing more work for this class, than any of my other classes combined. I don't recommend her class at all.
Professor Tomko is an amazing profssor!! There are essays and readings, but this is a humanities course... Journals are easy grades, as long as you complete them it's an A. Excellent feedback on essays and great lectures. First drafts of essays typically aren't even graded; she reviews them and grades the final draft. My writing has improved tons!
Be prepared for a ton of writing. Weekly journal entries, each one is 250 words, so it comes out to at least 1,000 words plus homework. She comes across as condescending and expects too much for a gen ed class. If you are a student at Ramapo College, don't just avoid the professor, avoid taking Studies in Arts and Humanities for as long as you can.
She is a sweet woman, understanding and provides great feedback. However, she does expect alot out of her students. Journal entries every week, 4 entries and each one has to be 250 words. Expects us to buy all 7 books we are reading this semester as well as writing crafts and essays and sometimes the deadlines end up being on all the same day.
Each week there would be 2-3 assignments, consisting of journals, writing crafts and essays. It becomes overwhelming when there are assignments pilling up from one class. The journals taught me nothing about the books we read, which we had to read 7 books in 4 months. The professor tended to talk about inappropriate or unimportant topics in class.
She is condescending and insults you in her "feedback" she will not accommodate to her students, nor does she care about them personally, doesn't answer emails, WILDLY inappropriate for no reason. expectations are ridiculous and has the idea that we only take her class and thats it. DO NOT take her for AIID201. I dreaded that class.
For a gen-ed, the workload was a little heavy. However, the journals are all free write, and is purely graded on completion. Writing crafts are tough, but she's a lenient grader when it comes to essays. Class really isn't very difficult. She's very nice and a generous professor as well.
She is a good professor and this is a good class to do homework for your other classes in. She makes some inappropriate jokes that never seem to land. You have 4 skips which is nice. 6 books you have to read, and LOTS of homework to do, sometimes up to 3 a week.
I found Prof. Tomko to be a very lovely lady. She does make some sexual jokes but imo they're not as bad as other reviewers are saying. Lots of books to read and writing assignments. Towards the end of the semester I was very overwhelmed. I spent more time on work for her class than my other three classes combined. Find another prof if ur able.
She is spunky in the best way. You have to read A LOT over the semester. There are discussion posts once a week which are easy to fall behind on. A couple of papers. You have to go to a play and write a paper about it. It was not a super hard class, but the workload was kind of overwhelming. I fell behind, but she was very understanding.
She is very intelligent when it comes to literature and writing, understanding and caring. A LOT of reading, we read 5-6 books throughout the semester. Keep up or YOU WILL FALL BEHIND! 4 journal entries due each week, a midterm, final, and a few papers. She will rip you apart on papers but gives good feedback to improve. Raunchy but in a good way.
She is not helpful at all. Gives you 2 days to do a essay video. Does not help when ask for it on assignments and instead lectures you on paying attention more. I cant due to my adhd so I stim and take a 2 min walk to stop and she desdies to out me to the entire class about struggling. terrible teach and a terrible person. she needs to be fired.
