Uses powerpoint slides (which are online) Not a fun teacher.
I spoke with her a couple of times, and she's a really nice person, and honestly wants to help her students, but she just can't teach. Lectures are very dry, boring, and hard to digest. It's obvious she knows her stuff, but she can't simplify and clarify.
Lectures were dry, boring, and sometimes hard to follow. An intelligent person, but can't teach at all. Tests were difficult. Try to avoid this professor.

This lady knows her stuff. She is a nice person, very approchable. SHE IS VERY INNEFECTIVE AS A TEACHER FOR . I went above and beyond to study for this class-read the entire chapters, did all of her recommended questions. I still couldnt do better than the class average (~40%) on her test.
She is very intelligent but cannot teach at all. You do problem after problem and still dont get any clarity. Test average was like a 30 so that speaks for itself!!!!!
She is a terrible teacher. Never go over the material in textbook. Just read her powerpoint. Exams are horrible. Don't take her class, she broke my 4.0GPA. Student killer.
HORRIBLE! She is one of the worst professors at UH. Her lectures had nothing to do with the exams. She is a GPA dropper. You have been warned do not and I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. A friend said it best, I think I would have a better chance of learning Genetics if I learned it from a dog.
She just doesn't how to teach. Students have no idea what to be expected in exams. She read her PPT in class, students don't understand the material. Ask her will confuse us more. I don't understand why a university will keep such professor in position? Wasting our tuition and federal grant...
she would be good if she didn't speak while we were copying powerpoint. the times when she gave us select slides were the only times when i gained anything from her lectures. i still managed to get a fair amount above the class average on all tests, but my scores were still pretty sad (70 and 59)
That teacher knows her stuff well, but she is NOT a TEACHER.you can fall asleep in her class cuz she talks more than writes which is not helpful fr most student, you have to study hard for her class although the material is not bad. Her tests can be hard if you can read her mind. STUDY the homework problems well if you want to pass with a good grad
Worst teacher. Powerpoint lectures. Tests were mainly word problems, little similiar to lecture. Bad grading scale.
AVOID THIS INSTRUCTOR!!!! She knows what she is saying, but she has no idea how to teach. The tests are horrible. The only thing that may save you in this class is the grading scale that she uses. If everyone does bad in the class, then you have a good chance of making a pretty good letter grade.
An evolution intellect, she gets overwhelming really fast and she's not always nice b/c she's impatient with letter-conscious students. Unless you already know some theory on population biology, exams are gonna be really (I mean really) rough. GOOD LUCK!
Signed up for Dr.Well.First day of class some lady walked in, named Weirnazs.Nice at first sight. She's the sorriest teacher I've ever known.Don't understand from lecture.Test is...impossible.I read every chapter attempted every HW prob,DID NOT HELP ON TEST.THIS IS CRAP! the only reason she got a job is this class being advertised under Dr.Well. :=(
She is a rapid teacher. She only helps you one on one. She can get frustrated from you pretty easily and expects you to pick up real fast on the material she teaches. She teaches the analytical aspect of genetics and forgets a lot of times that this is INTRODUCTION to genetics.
Dr. Wiernasz, a population Geneticist, doesn't give you all the lecture slides, plus they're not always helpful either. At the end of lecture you will probably go home like most of us and learn it on your own. She can be nice and condescending at the same time. Tests were difficult, but the final was brutal. Prior genetics knowledge a must.
If the class wasn't listed under Dr. Wells she wouldnt have a single soul enrolled. I dropped her and followed both classes she tought till the end. 80% dropped her out of a couple hundred students. In largest class she had 3 A's, 10 B's, 35 C's and 15 F's. The curve which she dosn't state is calc against left cream of crop students. Shes evil!
This woman can't teach, she just comes in and shows off her skills in genetics. When you ask questions, she doesnt answer them, because she says it isnt fair if she answered it...because some people may be absent and not hear what she says... So then why do you even teach?!!! Some people could be absent...its not fair to them...just call off class.
Whantever you do, do NOT take this professor! She is a nice person, but she cannot teach. I, along half of my class, dropped her after test 1.
Horrible teacher. Genetics is interesting but she totally destroys any interest you had going into the class. I wish i would have dropped cuz now my GPA is shot and i have a, or had a, 3.5, anyways dont sign up for Dr. Wells cause she teaches half the semester. I highly recommend if you want to learn something TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!
Horrible teacher. Probably one of the worst I have ever had. Don't try talking to her in class- she is rude and will not answer questions. Outside of class she is actually a nice lady, but her teaching style is WAY over my head. Her tests are close to impossible. Average for each test was around a 40!! 40!- Can you believe that?! Run far far away!
worst teacher ever. she's rude. she doesnt like it when you ask questions in class. her material is so much harder than it should be. she incorporates high level stats and calculus into her lectures. EVEN HER GRADING SYSTEM REQUIRES YOU TO FIND A STATS BOOK TO UNDERSTAND!!!
Horrible teacher! Protocol for this class makes it so even if sign up for Wells, you end up with her teaching the first half of the course.Until the university changes this policy no matter who you sign up for you get fried no matter what.
She's not a bad teacher... until you have to take one of her tests. She makes it a point to put the most tricky, unrelated, unclear and esoteric questions on the tests that have nothing to do with the book or lecture content. Average test scores were in the low 40's.
i would recommend avoiding at all costs. she is very knowledgeable, but her tests are ridiculously hard. the MC are alright, but the short answer/work problems are stupid.
Over she is a cool profesor. She knows her information BUT her test are hard if you take her class you must buy the book, read her notes and give atleast four hours a day to study!!! HARD CLASS! Even though you desserve an A, the way she grades can mess you up in the end .... she grades using the Standard Z score. NOT FAIR!
Took Evo. Biology last semster and it was HARD. I suggest you read the book, NEVER miss class and NEVER fall behind. Also, your graded on a Z Score, which can be a plus but also negative. If everyone fails you pass, that's simply the rules for Z Score. If I would do the class all over again, I would take Zurfal. Simply as THAT!
She is not a very effective communicator. Although she is very intelligent, she thinks that all her students are at her Ph.D level and can understand her. I would recommend not taking her unless you want to learn everything yourself and take a lot of outside time to study.
this is my first ever post on this site throughout my entire undergraduate career. I must warn all of you from not taking this professor because you will definitely regret it. I had a sure B in this class as the teacher who taught the other half of the syllabus (Dauwalder) helped me alot.
She talks at a level only PhDs can understand. Not very helpful and hard to follow. Exams are off topic and not reflective of what was taught. Worst professor I ever had.
I will not talk about the instructor, but I recommand you to practice by solving the guestions behind each chapter. get the solution manual is very helpful.
This is one smart woman but terrible teacher. You'll be on your own, she cant explain in simple terms to save her life. She uses complicated language for simple material. My advice, get another teacher or a tutor ASAP.
She SUCKS!!!!! And she is NOT HOT LOL.....Like i really studied my ass off for her tests but still when i got to her tests i was like WTF?!?! DO NOT TAKE HER!!
DO NOT TAKE HER...I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER. BY LOOKING AT THE EXAM IN THE CASA WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU KNOW NOTHING EVEN THOUGH YOU CHEW THE BOOK.
The first part of the course is very analytical and requires hard work, and she is the BEST teacher. I took others, so I should know. She is v. dedicated and extremely helpful after the class. Don't miss lectures and be ready to work your A** off. Nothing comes easy.
Dr Diane is an asset to UH. As far as teaching goes, she is very hard to follow. She teaches and talks genetics. its her passion, so i understand where she might just go into alot of detail... but sometimes concepts and issues went above my head! Read your text book and study hard and ask questions! Dr Wells was a hugh relief!
If you enjoy failing, take her. This class was called intro to genetics but it felt like she was lecturing to PHD students. Avoid her at all cost.
Hard class, avoid at all cost,I studied the textbook and solution manual, printed out all her powerpoint slides, attended all lectures and took good notes thinking I was ready for the test.I went to CASA and saw question 1,I was like WHAT..,are you kidding me. Class average was in the low 40s.Only way to pass her class is to score above class average.
I got my A in this class but I have to say she is NOT a good professor. The tests are horrible and made to confuse and throw off students. She's only teaching so she can continue her research. What an A? Know everything on her notes and do each problem 3 times.
Took her for evolution and I really liked the class. In my opinion she is a very good lecturer and she is always willing to help. Exams and the homework were hard, but like any class you have to put effort to do good. She is definitely one of my favorite bio professors
I made an A in her class but it was only because I spent 30 hours a week studying the material. Her tests are not clear. They go off her notes not the book. Get ready for graduate level course as an undergrad.
I read the book and took notes, went to class and took notes on her slides, did the problems w/ the solution manual, and went to tutoring. She's not helpful at all. She pulls her tests out of thin air. I didn't recognize some of the topics on the test! Terrible. Got a B cause DAN WELLS taught the second half of the class. If not, I would've failed.
There's no better and more dedicated teacher than Dr. W. If you put in the effort, there's nobody like her to gets those questions answered -- she's Brilliant! And you need that, because these are some of the most complex topics and require a clear understanding. That's what her tests decipher.
I passed this course because of Dr. Wells. Her exams were super painful. On one exam we had a 24 pt curve or so. Ridiculous. She is smart, but that does not help a student who is new to the subject. If you have the unfortunate luck to have her team teaching with a good professor, just hang in there and make sure to do well on the good profs tests.
Very brilliant & down to earth. Took her evolution class & loved it. At times it can be hard to listen since she is soft spoken & kinda monotone. Her lectures are engaging & she really strives to make the material clear always willing to help outside & in class. Her exam was somewhat hard but not impossible. Dual taught with Azevedo & both are good
This professor was very hard to learn from. Her slides are mostly pictures, and not very helpful. She was rude a few times when students needed her to review a concept more than once. Her tests were extremely difficult even after doing the homework and having a study group. Dr. Wells half of the course saved me because he made the course interesting
Waited until 2 hours before an exam to post answers to some homework questions that happen to be on the test. Test questions worded funny, and do not reflect lecture material. Speaks clearly, but can be somewhat rude at times.
She tries really hard to explain but she's in another level when it comes to her vocabulary, she's brilliant so it's hard to understand her. As for Evolutionary Bio Class, It's the most difficult class I've ever encountered and taught with technical language makes it even harder. Avoid this class!
Excellent prof, brilliant & passionate. Lecture content & vocab ARE subj level appropriate. Text, intensive exam prep (not 2-3 days before exam), HW, complete underst'g of ALL concepts req'd (don't fool yourself) Exams are brutal. "Prepare to meet your maker." Avail after class & by appt. to help.
I say certainly one of the most brilliant of minds, but I concur with most people that she is not equipped to lecture the "average" undergraduate. Her high command of the English language combined with a propensity to lecture in technical words of population biology will not be easy to grasp.
She is a very nice professor, but her tests are extremely hard. Work ALL the book problems, don't miss class, ask question, use the office hours and DO NOT GET BEHIND!
Be prepared to work problems from the book, ask a ton of questions and notice the information she is giving that is not in the presentation material because it will be used on the exams. Overall she is easy to talk to but her exams are extremely hard.
VERY INTELLIGENT WOMAN HOWEVER SHE CAN NOT TEACH. EXTREMELY HARD TO UNDERSTAND, NOTES DO NOT CORRELATE WITH HOMEWORK. SHE HAS AN EXTRA HELP SESSION BUT DOES NOT LIKE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS. CAN BE VERY RUDE. I DO NOT RECOMMEND UNLESS YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE CLASS
You need a dictionary to understand this professor, because she teaches in jargon. She seems helpful, but when I would visit her during office hours she was rude and rather pretentious. You can tell she only teaches because she has to. She is much too interested and passionate about her research.
She's definitely one of the worst professors I've taken during my academic career at UH. Doesn't like to help you if it's a question about the test. Or if its a question one-on-one. Her excuse is always "it's not fair to others." Definitely stay away.
How to approach this class: -memorize the entire book including stuff not mentioned in lecture -get a tutor -be prepared for multiple "wtf" moments when taking her exams -pray you pass without having to retake the class.
It is a rather boring lecture to sit and listen to. Hard exams. I strongly recommend that you take another professor who teaches genetics. For this professor, be prepared to be tricked by her exam questions. Be ready to do poorly on her exams and pray that she curves your exams. Homeworks will sap away a lot of your time, energy, and patience.
She knows what she's talking about but her teaching methods are lackluster unless it deals specifically with what she studies. Her tests are unbelievably difficult, I suggest working out tons of problems and finding yourself a tutor if you hope for a decent grade.
This course is very difficult. Getting an A in both Bio 1 & 2 with Ana Medrano, I still have a very difficult time in her class. I find it hard to stay awake in her class because of her style of lecture and her tests are completely impossible. I did better on Test 2 not studying at all than I did studying like hell for test 1 =[
She really knows her stuff. She's just not a good teacher. Her tests are horrible. Some questions she writes aren't clear cut. Answers can vary because she doesn't think out the variables as well. Our class had big curves because her tests were so bad. I did not appreciate her inconsistent questions. FYI: a kid called her Ms. Wiernaz. It's Dr. W.
Her slides were mostly pictures and graphs that DID NOT clearly explain relevant points. She has a very rude and uncompromising tone about her, and she WILL NOT provide any assistanceclarification to exam or essay questions. She might be extremely knowledgeable in her field, but her expertise is definitely not in the classroom -- POOR TEACHER.
Her notes are just a bunch of graphs from scientific papers that correlate with concepts. You must take good notes during lecture or else the lecture notes will be very difficult to interpret. The essay question on the test is graded fairly rough. Test questions require you to understand concepts very thoroughly. Would not take this class with her.
Very difficult tests that are hard to predict or practice for. Class average was a 50!!! and instead of curving she gives really hard extra credit. Normally I'd be thankful but I noticed A LOT of errors in the questions making them impossible to answer. In the end I was supposed to "assume this" and "not assume that." No one got very many points.
She holds review sessions after class. You can ask any question you may have about the lecture and it is extremely helpful. Don't rely solely on the powerpoints; take notes and use them as a reference. Do the HMNS extra credit assignment (easy).
STAY AWAY! Her tests are extremely difficult and at most times, questions make no sense at all! she will not help to further clarify anything!! Most students failed her first exam, so she gave an equally difficult extra credit assignment which again, everyone failed too. Simply put, she cannot teach. Don't take her if you want to pass!
She is a very intelligent professor but she teaches us from her level which makes it very confusing for us beginners. She basically expects us to know genetics as soon as we start the class. Test averages were in 40's she curved it to the 50's. Her class average is ALWAYS C- as she stated, idk why on here it is A-. No way to study for her tests
Do yourself a favor and take someone, anyone else.
Do not take her, literally the exams have nothing to do with any material she teaches. I read all the chapters and still got a 30 on the test. I got tutoring and still no hope. She expects the whole class to automatically understand everything. Worst experience of my college years. If you get a B let alone an A you must be Jesus.
Her tests questions literally comes from thin air, she is a Princeton graduate and expects us to all be so as well. Does not give answers for test once taken, so you kinda guess what you did wrong. Her power points are pictures, do not expect anything in the lecture nor the book to be on the test, the TA didn't understand her either.
She honestly is a very hard grader. Our class average was really bad with her. Her notes are all pictures and graphs and and her test aren't relevant to the lectures at all. You've got to be super smart inorder to pass one of her tests!
By far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. It's almost like she wants you to fail the course. Tests & home works have NOTHING to do with the material. All her lectures are of pictures & graphs. And if you ask her a question she gives attitude. Do yourself a favor & take ANYONE else.
Assigns tedious hw, but it IS relevant. Going to class and hearing lectures helps, you definitely have to read her assigned reading. She has after class "help" sessions that are VERY helpful. If you are persistent and truly try, she see's that and will help you. Don't be frightened off by her mannerisms. One of the hardest prof's I have had.
Her belief is that class attendance is very importance so she does not test over material in the book but rather lectures That being said her lectures are very complex and hard to follow Ill say that she is very willing to help if you go to office hours but you still might be confused when you leave She posts an old exam but no key Very hard
If you are a person who learns in class, I'd suggest you look for another Professor. The lectures were confusing to me, and the presentation slides uploaded for the class were futile - you couldn't refer back to them for "information" after class since they're primarily pictures.
Run away! Her lecture is monotone and fast. Slides change rapidly with no time to absorb what is happening. Exams are ludacrisly difficult to even understand what the question is asking more the less solving. Recitation was helpful, however I wish they would do it after class instead of a random time schedule. Her TA ignores emails also.
By far the worst professor I have taken at UH, & I've had some awful professors. She's not a bad lecturer, don't get me wrong. But her exams are insanely difficult & quantitative. Average of both her tests were a 40/41, that speaks for itself tbh. I did everything I could do & couldn't make an A on either test. SAVE YOUR GPA & DO NOT TAKE HER.
Horrible!!! Worst teacher I have taken in my entire undergraduate studies. Her tests and homework are hard! She is hard overall not just for genetics. Her lectures are boring and she does not even teach half of the stuff that will be on the exam. Concept is understandable but she just makes it hard. Class average for one of the exams was a 20.
When she teaches, the textbook is useless. She is very smart but don't know how to dumb down the material or she likes giving us a hard time. Her Lectures are PPT with only pictures. Record her lectures if you take her. Exam 1 and 2 AVG was 40 ish. If it weren't for Lin in the second half I would not have made it thru the course. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Prof W doesn't always start from the basics, so it is always a good idea to read the textbook before class. Genetics is a difficult subject, and understanding concepts is more crucial than memorizing. Even if the lecture is confusing, it helps to record the lecture and listen to it several times. She is very helpful and kind in her QA sessions.
Honestly, there's no sugar coating it. This professor is awful. Her powerpoints have no words or explanations, her lecturing doesn't make sense for the level we were learning at. If you can, take this class with another professor. It's passable bc of the huge curves, but you wont learn anything. I made a 43 on a test and somehow passed w a B-
Professor Wiernasz is very intelligent within her field but her lectures are so fast paced and dense that its hard to keep up from the very beginning. Her tests were extremely difficult. I ended up dropping the course and taking the class with different professors (Dauwalder & Meisel) the next semester and am doing perfectly fine.
She is the WORST teacher at University of Houston! Avoid her at all costs! She doesn't care about student success, and makes all of her classes 10x more difficult than they need to be. Students try to ask her questions and she becomes extremely annoyed and impatient. Please save yourself and save your GPA and do not take this professor for anything
AWFUL!! She basically puts people to sleep and then expects the students to be attentive. Gave everybody a 2.5 on the essay portion as they were similar in her opinion, ofcourse they are as we all used the book to write our answers duh.. Save yourself from this trauma and wait for a semester to take it with another professor. Save your GPA
Do not take this professor! Her tests are awful, there is no information in the slides, she is not flexible at all, argues with students, and I could go on forever. I was taking significantly harder classes at the same time but did the worst in this one. You can get your answers directly from the textbook and she'll still count it wrong. BEWARE.
Worst and most inconsistent professor I have ever had. Power points have no words and you end up just reading the entire book anyways. Takes off points when your answers are too similar to other students (because we all have the same book...). Recommend waiting a semester for a better professor
She is a very odd person. Her lectures are so boring I had to be sure to drink a coffee right before each one. Her exams are worded extremely hard and im usually a very fast exam taker but I always used the whole time for her exams. If you don't pay attention to every word she says and understand it thoroughly, be ready to rely on textbook problems
I genuinely learned a lot from her classes. Just do your work and you will enjoy her classes.
Terrible professor, end of story.
Hardest and most unfair class I've taken, Practice exams are a joke and in no way a good indicator of the difficulty of the actual exams, no grades dropped. Unclear lectures, they accused MANY students of plagiarism for ONE HW QUESTION possibly ruining their chances of getting into grad school, absolutely brutal and cruel professor. RUN AWAY!!
she single handedly made me hate evolution. she knows her stuff and i learned a good amount but i never got to show that because the exams are extremely difficult, you can study her lectures and other things so much and still do bad. Class avgs were 50s and she does not curve. Shes a very tough grader and this class made me depressed. DO NOT TAKE
If you can, do not take this class with this professor. This class was unnecessarily hard and very unfair. She does not care about the success of her students. Lectures are unclear. Practice exams and homework that were given did not adequately prepare students for the exams. All of the exam averages were very low due to poor teaching.
Dr. Wiernasz appears to be very knowledgeable about evolutionary biology. While I didn't have much personal interaction with her (because of prerecorded lectures) she seemed available for contact and passionate about the subject. As for the course itself, it wasn't bad. Just read the textbook and do the many assignments and you'll be fine.
This prof does not care for her students. Speaks in a monotone voice that even she is not excited about her own material. Doesn't answer student questions in a clear manner. her exams do not make sense! and she won't go over them either. Homework doesn't make sense. Nothing from her lectures. Its impossible to do well in this course
This professor tests her students based off of random things that may have been mentioned once in class. There is no review given to focus on certain topics for the exam. It doesn't help that she has a very monotone and soft in class, so adjusting to her teaching style halfway through the semester will be a very tough task. Take another professor!
This professor has extremely unclear and BORING lectures. Her test questions are often times very hard to understand and obscure. Do NOT take this class if you care about your GPA, she will not fail in ruining it.
Professor Wiernasz really knows her stuff. Important to study from the old exams she provides as the format of the question remains similar. She writes tricky questions that require solid reading comprehension, info from prerequisite classes and the material she presents. Her test was very difficult.
