i had to take chemistry twice and she was the second professor i had. she made everything really simple or as simple as possible. she does guided notes which is VERY helpful in chem to have the notes exactly how the professor has it in slides. shes very helpful in office hours and will help with every ALEKS topics you need. one of my favorites !
Very clear guided notes and good examples during lecture. She takes time during office hours to really make sure you understand a topic and she cares about her students. It seems like her test averages are higher than other classes and if you go to class and her office hours to ask questions you can get a good grade.
She explains things very clearly and I've always been a fan of the guided notes style. Her tests aren't too bad if you review the ALEKS and the notes you take. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that she doesn't do make up tests, though she replaces your lowest test with your final, so you aren't screwed by missing one test.
As long as you go to the office hours for ALEKs help or clarification and attend class you should do fine. It is chemistry so it was hard but her guided notes make it easier to understand. Her tests arent too bad but she doesnt normally finish them until the day before the test so no questions can be answered about it since she doesnt know.
Dr. Forbes provided us with guided notes which were amazing. I have not heard great things about other chem 1 teachers at Auburn but she was not bad. The tests were pretty difficult and it is on you to learn a lot of it. Aleks is mandatory and your grade is only based on 3 tests, a final, and Aleks.
Dr. Forbes is the nicest professor and takes the time to explain things in a way that everyone will understand. She uses guided notes which are so helpful for the tests and basically she writes everything as you write it, so you won't miss any piece of information. Helps a lot with ALEKS and works problems in class that help prepare you for tests.
Uses guided notes while she lectures, which I really liked. Very funny and willing to help you after class & at office hours. She's chill and a lot "easier" than other Chem professors here, but I think the way she teaches makes the difference. You have to work for your grade in her class, like all other chems, but I would definitely recommend her.
Simple and nice, take her chem I, a little effort is enough to pass
Dr. Forbes is super nice and chill. I had an A all semester but ended with a B because I did bad on the final. She gives extra credit and is very willing to help you. Go to her office hours to ask questions.
Great person but doesnt provide many opportunities to cushion your grade. I was doing good until the final and bombed it which tanked my grade. Her tests are very in detail on specific things. I wasnt a fan of the guided notes personally bescuase it was easy to overlook some of the stuff because there was so much info on so many papers.
Best Chemistry teacher at Auburn. Gives you notes for the test that are super helpful. Explains things super clearly. Aleks was super easy because she goes over them in class. 1040 is not an easy subject so get ready to study, but she makes it better.
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Forbes!! I really liked the guided notes because I had the information right in front of me while she talked about it. Yes, it was a lot but it was worth it. Her test are not hard if you read and understand the material. Do the suggested problems in the book and you'll do great on her tests!
This class was supposed to be in person but due to the pandemic moved to online. She rarely answers emails and 3 tests are 60% of your grade. When the students attempted to voice concerns, she stated that she wants to "test our knowledge" with tests. Tip: never bring up extra credit. If you do get ready for passive aggressive announcements.
If you can get any other professor for CHEM1030, I recommend you do. The exams are 60% of your grade and are significantly harder than any other CHEM1030 prof. She offers 0 extra credit and is frankly really rude. Only made an A on one exam and it took me 16 hours of studying. My friends with different professors had none of these issues. AVOID!!
Dr. forest was a rather easy professor. The only thing I didnt enjoy was how she only went over 1 type of practice problem. But this is what all Chem 1030 professors do. She goes into detail on important topics that really help. Other professors did not do this very well. She is very nice and is a good choice. Study the study guide. Easy tests.
I had her completely asynchronous. She just posted her lectures and went, which I guess is to be expected. Not lenient about her tests at all. Homework is very time-consuming but doesn't contribute much to your grade at all. Take another Chem professor. Just do it.
I use to love chemistry and did very well in the past, however this class was awful and I ended up having to drop. I studied weeks in advance for tests and got tutors and still ended up having to drop the class. She forever to reply to emails and is very hard to meet with. The lectures are very long and don't prepare you for the homework questions.
This was an online class with zero interaction with the professor. There was no opportunities for extra credit. Hours of lecture videos every week that did not prepare me very well for the homework. I had to work extremely hard to get an A- when I considered myself good at chemistry. I studied a week in advance and never felt prepared for tests.
I may dislike chemistry, but she is hilarious, laid back, and personable. She made it so much more bearable.
Dr. Forbes is not a good teacher. Gives guided notes, but flies through the problems on them & the homework and test problems are completely different from each other. Takes forever to reply to emails & sometimes doesn't even reply to them at all. No scaling, no extra credit, & she does not round grades at the end of the semester, a 59.9 is an F.
Dr. Forbes made 1030 seem like a breeze. Keep up with your work, take advantage of the recitation sheets/study guides, and the tests are easy. She was helpful when I needed her help, and she was very understanding. Great prof. for chem, she cares about how you do in the class and she is very approachable so don't be afraid to ask her for help.
Dr. Forbes is good at what she does, but she is not super accessible outside of class. This is because teaching at Auburn is actually her third job. Just show up, do the practice exams, recitation sheets, LA office hours, and you should be fine.
Professor Forbes is so nice, and super sociable and funny. The class is hard, but that's because its college level chemistry, not because of her teaching skills. You will need to come to class though, because the notes are not put online and if you don't have them you will fall behind. Also she gives you a chance to get points back after every test
She is a lively teacher and also teaches a high school class. She uses guided notes as her teaching method and she is overall a fun teacher. The only downside is the ability to talk to her outside of class because she has a very busy schedule
Dr. Forbes is your average professor. She's very lecture heavy, her class is huge, and 80% of your grade is determined by 4 tests. Also, teaching at Auburn is her third job so she's not very accessible outside of class. That being said she's also very reasonable, and the guided notes are a blessing to say the least.
Im just not good at Chem but Dr. Forbes is a good person and teacher, but the class is really you get what you give. Show up and make sure you have a general understanding of the concepts or good luck.
Taking Dr. Forbes was the worst decision I made when selecting professors. She does nothing to help your grade; all she does is replace your final with 1 lowest test grade and thats it. 3 tests, final, and homework is all there are for grades. Her teaching style is through insanely long lecture notes that complicate everything & make zero sense.
She is a good person and very helpful if you reach out for help, but you have to reach out for it. The class is hard overall, so the notes can be confusing at times. She does guided notes for her lectures, which is really helpful but if you skip or miss class then it really hurts your ability to understand the concepts gone over during class.
Dr. Forbes is a kind person - but, do not be fooled by this. Throughout the semester, she only gives exams and homework so there is no way to really bring up your grade if you do not start out strong. If you are good at chemistry, you will be fine in her class. But for all people that it does not come easily to, DO NOT TAKE HER. She is difficult.
She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. It is through the department (not her) that only test and homework make up the final grade. She gives you all the resources to use -LA, SI sessions, practice tests, supplementary sheets- and if you put in the work you will have a good grade.
80% tests. She is a good professor but is not very accessible and class is at an awful time. Exams cover lots of material and are very difficult. She is a nice person and a good teacher. Sometimes class would fall behind schedule and it would make things more difficult to learn right before exams. Good teacher just a tough course in general.
Dr. Forbes is very hard to reach outside of her classroom. However, she is extremely friendly and is willing to answer any questions if you go up to her before class. She uses guided notes and just reads them and doesn't really explain many topics very well. She uses mastering chem, but your grade relies solely on exams. Exams are difficult.
I loved Dr. Forbes. I was super nervous for taking chemistry but I went to every class and did the homework and did super well. She also gives a lot of practice problems to study for class that are super helpful. The class itself is hard but she helped make it as simple as she could.
She is unorganized and did not prepare us well for our test. She does not care if you do well at all even if you approach her and ask questions.
She seems like a great person outside of school. But every class is slotted notes, and the day before test we start learning new stuff, unrelated to the next day test. No reviews, and your only hope is the SI meetings. This is a wake up call for new freshman.
Dr. Forbes does guided notes for her lectures so you're always engaged in what is being discussed. She gives plenty of practice with the concepts and problems both in and out of class. Very approachable and a good straight-to-the-point teaching style. The concepts in the class can be hard, but this professor is the best for CHEM 1030
She is a good teacher uses guided notes which is nice because its a ton of material. The class it self can be hard. But if you show up and fill in the notes and pay attention and do the homework you will be fine. You have mastering chemistry homework about once a week and test every 2-3 weeks.
Chemistry 1030 is awful in general. Dr. Forbes is a great professor, she does guided notes packets for each unit and posts an incredible amount of information and practice on her canvas page. Her lectures can get a little boring because she only teaches on the Tuesday and Thursday lecture slot.
She seems like a great person.. but she isn't the best professor. The class that she teaches is difficult in itself, and, while some may have found her packets useful, I found that there was too much information and she never told us what to focus on. The practice exams are very different from the tests and her class is boring. She is rude in email
Good prof, but class is mainly graded on the tests. She has good humor and makes the classroom seem more light and enjoyable but it can get dull at times. No extra credit only thing she does is replace one of your test with the final exam grade, but all in all not a bad prof.
3 exams and a final like any science class, it's a departmental thing. attendance isn't technically mandatory but she has guided notes and won't give you the answers so you should always go to class. replaces lowest grade with final exam grade. the homework is tedious, but it actually did help me better understand the material. will crack jokes
Forbes is a good professor, I just have heard she doesn't do as much as other professors when helping you prepare for an exam. This is the only downside to taking her class, and her guided notes are awesome in you're in class. However, there is so much possible material, and I just wished she would have narrowed it down a little before each one.
Professor Forbes does not teach well, and her tests seem to sabotage students but asking questions not focused on in class or on the study guide. Avoid at all costs!
Forbes is the best chemistry professor you could ask for to teach your first chemistry class. She makes jokes during class and uses guided notes. Also, she gives many different practice problems that is optional to complete to prepare you for the exams. The exams are not hard if you practice the problems in the book that she recommends.
Great professor, doing the homework and following along with guided notes was extremely helpful. Class is not hard if you practice the problems she recommends.
Dr. Forbes is a great professor. While her lectures are pretty boring and the class is hard, it is totally possible to do well. She provides a lot of materials to help you prepare for the exams. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, you need to show up or else you will probably fail.
Forbes is a funny and kind teacher. She teaches by creating fill in the blank notes which she reviews during the lectures. This worked really well for me, but it may not work for everyone. Overall, if you study super hard for the tests and go to class you will be fine.
Dr. Forbes is the best! She teaches everything very well with her guided notes, works plenty of practice problems in class, and also provides a ton of practice worksheets before each test. The tests aren't too bad if you study and work the math problems.
Uses guided notes for class. Quality teacher and communicates well. Only 3 tests and a final worth 20% each, so definitely prepare. Homework is time consuming.
She does guided notes, so if you pay attention in class you should have everything you need to do well. Homework is only at the end of each chapter(about 30 ?s)but almost every question has at least 2 parts. Tests can be hard(worth 20% each)but if you understand the material you should be fine. She also give a lot of extra worksheets for practice.
Provides easy to follow guided notes. The grade you receive will reflect the average of your tests. Also replaced lowest grade with final exam grade if the final grade is higher than the lowest grade. In my case this boosted me from a B to an A.
This class is difficult but it will be ok. I went to almost all her office hours (more helpful than LA or SI sessions). She was very helpful in catching me up on what I didn't learn in high school. I got high Bs on her 3 tests by studying the guided notes I took in class & the textbook. The final is a nationwide test that dropped my grade a little.
Dr. Forbes is a great professor. Her lectures are guided and easy to comprehend. She is a little intimidating at first because of her personality, but she couldn't be more caring. Work hard and study a lot for her test (they are pretty difficult) and you'll be fine.
Dr. Forbes is very enthusiastic in her lectures and had a good pace which is easy to follow but not boring. The tests are rather difficult but she provides a lot of studying materials with enough time to digest the information. The homework is also very forgiving scoring-wise and is an easy A.
Best teacher I have had yet. Hard class but she explains things very easily and simply and in terms that aren't chemistry. Love her style of notes which are guided, and she gives print outs where you just fill in the blanks based on her lectures. Curves each test a good 7-10pts.
Dr. Forbes made CHEM 1030 a very easy class for me. As long as you show up to lecture with the printed notes and do the homework, the tests will feel extremely easy. I am enrolled in her CHEM 1040 class as of now and I would recommend her to anyone taking CHEM 1030
This is not a flipped classroom, it is lecture only. She gives notes that you fill out together in class, but she doesn't have PowerPoints or videos like flipped classes. The tests are hard, but it is mainly because it is a hard topic. The homework isn't bad and she replaces one of your exam grades if you do better on the final!
I LOVE Dr. Forbes and really enjoyed her class. She gives guided notes that are not posted until the end of chapter, so attendance is not required but mandatory to succeed. She's very knowledgeable and can explain concepts in different ways to help make sense. Can come off as harsh, but wants students to do well and is funny and nice in person.
she has guided notes that go over most of the material. there are a few things that she doesn't go over in the lecture. she expects you to read the textbook. attendance isn't mandatory but the way she explains things makes it 10x easier
suuuuuper awesome. she knows that chemistry is hard so she tries to help. you dont need the textbook but its a good idea if you like to follow the lecture with something. shes super nice and shes so real. take her if you get the chance.
Although she will replace your lowest test score with the final exam if it is higher, her tests are completely multiple choice so no chance for partial credit. She just lectures off of guided notes and doesnt work out many problems In class since it is not flipped. Lots of self study outside of class, take Crisostomo or Prado instead if you can.
Overall Dr. Forbes is a good professor. She lectures off of guided notes that are posted online after she finishes the chapter. The tests are all multiple choice with around 20-ish questions, so they're not too bad. However, if you are struggling, she isn't much help. I emailed her and explained a situation and she basically just said to drop,
She sends out notes for you to be using, the same notes she uses when teaching. I found that to be very helpful and easy to follow along with. Doesn't grade tests fast. She teaches pretty well.
I highly recommend Dr. Forbes. She seems to be the best in the department. Chemistry is a difficult subject, and you will have to put in the work regardless of what teacher you have. I have been to her office hours and emailed her many times, and she is always very helpful.
Dr. Forbes is such a sweet professor, but I felt as if her teaching style for 1040 wasn't as effective as a flipped style could be. Her class is lecture heavy (not recorded if missed) and her tests are pretty difficult. They are all multiple choice (still insanely hard.) Focused a lot more on math and often skimped on conceptual material.
I had her for chem 1 and 2. I liked how we took notes in class instead of the flipped classroom because it did not waste time. She does not post the completed ones so go to class. Chem 1 was a little easier for me but I will finish both classes with A's. Get practice exams from someone in Prado's class. The final exams are not too bad either.
Chem 2 is a hard subject to learn but with Dr. Forbes it is a lot easier to learn the subject. The final exam replacement is very helpful in the end if you are looking to get your grade moved up. She is definitely the best pick among the other chem 2 professors at Auburn.
I had Dr. Forbes for Chem 1 and 2 and she was honestly great. More difficult than Chem 1 but a lot of math and formulas. 3 tests and the final are 80 percent of your grade, and the three tests she gives in class are pretty easy and she gives you about 5-10 points for the grade. The ACS final was super easy and almost all conceptual.
Dr. Forbes is great! She makes chem 1 really easy as the hw and exams are straightforward. Most hw can be completed in less than an hour or so with a focus on simple "plug in chug" algebraic manipulation (no calculus is presented). I could have easily made an A but I had much more important and harder courses I was taking this semester.
Dr. Forbes is very nice however for me personally the lectures can be very boring and hard to pay attention to. All of her notes are fill-in-the-blank and that did not really help me understand the material. Even though attendance is not mandatory, you will not do well if you do not go to class. If she posts practice problems DO THEM.
Her lectures are very well explained and she is always helpful with questions. Her tests are very similar to the practice tests and you will get what you put into this course. This is definitely not one you can blow off though. I got a B with light studying from the practice tests and I do not even know common acids/bases. Would recommend.
Dr. Forbes is awesome! Attendance was not mandatory but going to class was crucial to get the notes needed. Her practice exams and questions were very helpful and they prepared me well for every test. I cannot recommend Dr. Forbes enough, I really enjoyed this class!
I loved the way Forbes taught, it reminded me of how high school teachers taught. She curves the exams pretty heavy which was really nice. I started to struggle mid semester with the content, so I started going to her office hours, even if it was just to do the homework and ask a question here and there, she was so helpful. 100% recommend.
I struggled because of her teaching style. She uses fill in the blank notes but this doesn't help me much because she doesn't work very many examples of the problems. There is a lot of teaching yourself after class. There is quite a bit of homework but it is not that bad but to me it is not helpful. The test are multiple choice but STILL very HARD!
If you struggled with chem in hs, TAKE HER! I was worried abt taking chem but she explains things so well! Pay attention in class & w/ the hw to make sure you understand. She offers extra practice if needed and usually has an SI that helps or hosts study groups. Chem is a hard topic regardless so you'll have to put in the work but she is awesome!
Pretty good professor. Explains all the concepts well and prepares you for the tests. Attendance is not mandatory, but you have to go to succeed. 4 Tests + a final exam + homework assignments are the only grades. I would recommend.
Explains things well. Go to class and read your book if you don't understand. The practice exam always helps for the test. Tests seem easy but often have tricky questions, but she curves well. For the notes, you either need to print them or notate on a screen because they're fill-in-the-blank. There are a lot of pages.
Chemistry is hard in general, but she does a good job "dumbing it down." She explains things clearly, notes are always really clear, and she does a good job answering any questions I've had. Go to class, do homework, and ask questions and you'll be fine
you must go to lectures to understand the material. chem is structured the same with every professor, so the class being hard isn't her fault. gives practice exams and some questions from that will be on her exam. you have to do a lot outside of class to understand but that is for every chem class here. hard class but i would recommend her
It's Chem so it's very gonna be easy, but Dr. Forbes makes it as manageable as possible. She uses guided notes to keep you engaged and assigns lengthy homework. but you have until the exam to complete it. She provides many study resources and is always available to help. Take her!
Dr. Forbes is a great professor. Chemistry is hard but she actively tries to make it easier to understand. She provides guided notes that you can print off and fill in during class which makes studying for tests way simpler. However, I wish the homework was weighted higher, almost your entire grade is based on 3 tests and the cumulative ACS final.
She is a really good teacher with very easy to follow guided notes. Chemistry is not the easiest subject for me to understand, but I definitely understand the topics better now and am thankful I had her for my only chem class I will have to take. If I had to take another chem class I would try to get her again.
Dr. Forbes was an amazing professor with in class notes that helped me succeed in this class. The homework is challenging, but the tests were always easier than the homework. She lets you know in advance what is going to be on the test, and genuinely cares about her students success. highly recommend!
Very nice, but chem just sucks. I got a tutor, went to SI sessions, and thought I did well on tests. I never made above a 55. Most people who end with a good grade either took AP Chem or is majoing in chemistry. If that isnt your main focus then you SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE TO SAVE YOURSELF.
Whether you like Forbes or not depends mainly on the fact she uses guided notes to teach. While this is an excellent way to teach students, the information she presents in no way prepares you for the standardized ACS final exam. Forbes fails to cover half of the math formulas required and virtual none of the conceptual information on the exam.
She is not a very good teacher. She spends a long time on the super easy things. For example, she spent half the class teaching us how to use a number line. It is not hard if you are smart and can teach yourself; if this is not you, then do not take It. ACS final was clutch and light work to make an A. Good luck at 8:00, ladies, gentlemen
Dr. Forbes is awesome! Her class has fill in the blank notes and she always breaks concepts down to make them more understandable. A textbook is given but reading it isn't really necessary as long as you do the reviews she posts and the homework. Her tests are all multiple choice and pretty easy as long as you know the concepts well. Take her!
Your grade only depends on your test grades and barely incorporates your homework grade. I did everything in my power to pass this course and could not pass because the material was difficult to understand from her lectures.
Nice teacher, but very hard class. Homework is really hard and very many questions and worth barely any of your final grade. She does not believe in curving exams even if the average is a 45!! Tests are not as difficult as the homework, but they are still really hard. She does not prepare you for the final!! The final replaces your lowest exam!
Class is lecture heavy, and the homework makes up 20% of the grade, while the remaining 80% is from exams. Attendance isn't mandatory, but suggested because she explains concepts really well. The final exam grade is replaced with your lowest exam grade. Her tests are slightly difficult, but fair if you paid attention during class and did practice.
Dr. Forbes is super nice and her lectures are great and very easy to follow. Her exams are very hard and they make up the 80% of your grade so be sure to study extra hard and do the practice problems she gives you. Also attend the SI sessions for her class they definitely helped me a lot, I would not have passed this class without them.
Dr. Forbes is a great professor and teaches well. She really cares about her students and is accessible outside of class. Your grade is made up of homework, 3 exams, and the final. She teaches using guided notes that you fill in (I did not personally learn well from this).
Dr. Forbes is amazing. She is straightforward and tells you the material is hard but she makes it easier to understand. She has guided notes she goes over during class but does not post them filled in until after the unit is over. 3 tests and the ACS final + 12 homework assignments. The material is hard but if you study you should not fail.
Guided notes that are helpful. Graded on 3 tests mostly so make sure to study hard.
Any CHEM 1030 class you take is gonna be hard, but Dr. Forbes does a great job of keeping the information as clear as it can be and preparing you well for the exams. 20% homework, and 20% for each of the 4 exams, including the final. The final exam is a nationwide exam and is more difficult but is heavily curved and replaces your lowest exam grade.
Chem 1030 is just hard. She has ok lectures and seems to be the best pick for 1030 from what i've heard from my friends with different teachers. I am just not good at chemistry whatsoever and I still passed so I would recommend Forbes for that reason only.
I really liked the guided notes she did, and she really tried her best to make things clear for us. It is simply just a hard class, I'm not sure if I would take her again only because her tests are just HARD. They are always only 20 questions, so I would strongly encourage studying a week at MINIMUM before the test.
Dr. Forbes class was interesting but you definitely have to work for your grade no matter what. Some people find her material easier than others but there's a lot of memorization and time required to get a good grade in this class.
Chem is hard no matter what, but she does a good job making things as clear as possible. She will always help if you have questions. You get one freebie question on all tests, and your final can replace your lowest test grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but COME TO CLASS!! Taking notes and hearing the lectures are crucial!
HER TESTS ARE HARDER THAN THE PRACTICE SHE GIVES, DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE PRACTICE TESTS!!! Beyond that she seems nice and her lectures are pretty good, just know everything on the notes because there will be a question on every bit of it and her tests are pretty short.
Dr. Forbes has been a phenomenal teacher for chem. Her notes are easy to follow and fill in the blank. SI sessions really help for this class. If you do better than one of your exams on the final then she replaces your lowest exam with that grade. The test are easy if you prepare well. High recommend you take her!!
I personally loved taking Forbes. Her use of guided notes helped me so much and studying around them helped me get a 100 on one of her exams. Your grade is solely based off of the exams, though. Do the homework, as it helps, too. Her lectures aren't boring so that's good. Attendance isn't required, but it helps if you're there to take good notes.
Forbes makes chemistry doable. She uses guided notes which works for some and doesn't for others. She is really good at explaining the math, the conceptual can be hard to understand. If you put in the work it is doable. I recommend SI even if you think you understand. Her test are multiple choice and can be tricky. She has 1 built in bonus.
Forbes is a great teacher. She can come off as harsh, but she does care, and she does want you to do well in her class. Her teaching style is very lecture-heavy and definitely not for everyone, but her guided notes make it easy to find the information to review.
1040 takes work outside of class but she does a good job explaining material so go to class, pay attention, and apply yourself outside and you will be fine. She offers lots of good practice materials and is accessible outside of class. Tests are 20% of grade, HW is the other 20%. Study and use old tests for sure. Grade depends on how hard you work
Her class is very difficult if you are not dedicated to it. although attendance is not mandatory, not showing up will do nothing but hinder you. She teaches very thoroughly but her tests are hard and there is no extra credit except for the fact that she offers 21 questions on 20 point exams. 3 exams, a final, and homework are the only grades.
Her exams were only 21 questions, with one technically being a bonus. Mastering chemistry homework were assigned for each chapter, not too much work but nothing like the exam. She held office hours every week, VERY accessible professor. Overall, loved her and she is indeed the best chem prof on campus!
I took her for CHEM1030 and CHEM1040. If you're comfortable reading the textbook and putting in the work to study almost daily, your grade is almost confirmed to be an A or B. Exams are ALL multiple choice (awesome). Clear, and no fluff teaching style. One of the best chem professors at Auburn, super straight forward, and best for the ACS.
She is very clear and direct about what will be on the tests. If you go to class, pay attention, do guided notes, and practice test you should be fine. Its not an easy course but she does a good job preparing you for tests.
Nothing rally good or bad to say about her, she uses fill in the blank notes for her lectures. Most of the time this is fine though more examples occasionally would be helpful. Not a lot of homework or other assignments so tests are gonna make or break your grade. They're multiple choice and she does not look at your scratch work for partial credit
She straight up tells you for both Chem 1030 and Chem 1040 that her class is a self-guided chemistry course. The majority of the teaching that she does is fill in the blank; however, she herself admits that these notes are not enough to pass her class. You will need to teach yourself. If this is your first time taking chemistry, take someone else.
way easier than 1030. She makes it so easy with the guided notes and the tests are so straight forward. If you go to class and pay attention you will make an A. I had over a 100 before the final.
Dr Forbes successfully cultivates an environment where students feel welcome and comfortable to ask for assistance. She's also valid because she loves Kanye.
I love the way she teaches her class - she uses guided notes, so you do have to go to class to complete them, but it's not too hard to get them from a friend if you have to miss. She's firm and pretty no-nonsense but always helpful when asked questions. The material's tough but she does the best that she can with it.
She is an amazing professor, but her class is based on what you get on the exams. She has 3 exams + final, and that is 80% of the grade. The homework is due the day before the exams. I highly recommend her for chemistry.
Dr. Forbes is the best. Her guided notes are great and she is always willing to help you if needed. She is firm and sticks to the syllabus, but is a great teacher. If you are taking this class she is the BEST option. I wish I could also take her for the rest of my chem classes here. She explains everything so well and has ample examples. Love her!!
A good class! Dr. Forbes knows her stuff and I loved having guided notes for lectures. It's a hard class but she makes it seem very simple.
She is absolutely amazing. Her lectures are very good and she uses guided notes during class. You definitely do have to study but if you study you should come out with a fine grade. She is also very caring for her students and very helpful over email and in person.
She is amazing. You definitely will need to study but if you study hard the work will pay off in her class. Her tested are all multiple choice and 20 questions long. I absolutely loved her and she genuinely cares about her students.
Dr. Forbes is an EXCELLENT chemistry professor. I truly believe if I had had any other professor for CHEM1030 I would not have been as successful. I definitely struggled in this class but that was just because the material of the class itself is simply difficult. Dr. Forbes is very straight forward and can be blunt but she's a great teacher.
Dr. Forbes is such an amazing professor for many reasons. She may be bit blunt and straight to the point but honestly there is no one better at Auburn in the gen chem department in my opinion. Most of her students respect her highly for good reason. The class itself is simply just difficult but she explains the material excellently. LOVE HER!
great professor just hard course in general. exams are worth too much of your grade. first exam scores came out. she doesn't scale.
Overhyped. Too much material per one exam, would be better if there were more/weighed less, or had quizzes for some buffer. Her lecturing is just going over guided notes, but she does do a good job at making them accessible. Attendance not mandatory but you need to go for note taking. *NO extra credit opportunities.*
She was really good at explaining material and I understood how to do the hw using the notes taken d
Tough but fair. It's by no means an easy class, but she is a good teacher and her notes are fill in the blank style.
She's a good teacher but just goes pretty fast. Her lectures get boring because of her voice but pay attention. The TAs helped a lot with SI Sessions.
Prof Forbes makes this class so much simpler. She's very direct and straightforward and obviously cares about the class and her students. Do not fall behind on notes, but if you don't skip lectures, you should be good. Best professor I had first semester. Taking her again for CHEM1040.
There is not a professor on campus that I would recommend more than Dianna Forbes! Her lectures are the best, very informative and makes very hard concepts way easier with her own tips and tricks. Overall, a very sweet person and would recommend to anyone. tests are few and are heavily weighted. Provides fill in note taking sheets for every chapter
Loved this professor and will most likely take her Chem 1040 class. She is very thorough and makes difficult concepts very easy to understand. Guided notes were very helpful.
This professor is great. She assigns a bit of homework but they are all due before the test. The test aren't difficult if you study and attend the lectures and the guided notes are amazing.
She tells you what equations will be on the test. Pay attention in class! And go to class! Do the homework right after you learn the chapter or else you'll be really behind.
Why would anyone dislike her
Very good professor. Lectures are straightforward with guided notes. Tests are difficult but her homework and practice problems on Canvas help a lot.
Forbes is a great teacher. Her lectures are extremely helpful and she offers many practice work sheets that help you prepare for tge
Overall, not awful. This is a difficult class and she is probably one of the best options. However, the exams are just too much material for one exam and should not dictate your grade that much. Quizzes are needed. If you like guided notes then you will do great. Does not seem like she cares about her students passing too much but she is nice.
Dr Forbes is a great and funny teacher! Her lectures are very helpful and she gives a lot of helpful study resources. There is homework for every chapter so I recommend doing the homework within a few days of completing the chapter so it does not pile up. The tests are not too bad, especially if you took AP Chem in highschool and study.
This is a difficult course regardless of the professor. However, Forbes makes it mostly tolerable. Homeworks take a while so definitely do not wait until the last minute.
Dr. Forbes teaches very clearly. She uses fill-in-the-blank style packets and goes through them in class. The notes are not available online so if you miss class you have to get it from a friend. The homework isn't due until the day before the exam, so make sure you don't get behind and have it all due at once.
Dr. Forbes's lectures were great but didn't cover everything. But the provided review guide and worksheets do. Be prepared to read and spend a lot of time on hw. Extra credit is built into tests. You get out what you put in, I walked into the final with a 102. She is great, but it is not an easy class, but it's college, it shouldn't be.
I wanted to take Dr. Forbes due to everyone's amazing ratings of her. At first I was doing great in her class then I did terribly on my second exam. So I went to her office hours for help and she was VERY rude and offended that I didn't know why I missed what I did. Even though her helping me is apart of her JOB. Terrible attitude and rude.
i truly don't understand all the bad reviews here, Dr Forbes is an incredible teacher who covers and explains the material exceptionally well. the in class notes and homework prepare you for the exam, and so long as you put a little bit of time into it the class isn't bad. i failed chem last year w/ a different prof and passed this year bc of her
I personally enjoyed Dr. Forbes' class a lot. I had failed AP chemistry the year prior to taking chem 1030 at Auburn and she helped fill in the gaps I had. She makes sure to TEACH and not just read slides. Take advantage of SI sessions and her office hours. Her tests are always 21 multiple choice questions. I am taking her again for CHEM 1040.
The best chem teacher at this school. Explains everything so well, and does not take attendance. Although, if you skip class you have to get the notes from someone. Had to study a good bit and go to tutoring, but I wouldn't want to take the class with anyone else.
She was a good professor, but her class is lecture-heavy and only graded based on three exams plus the final... there's not much room for error. With that being said though, I liked the way she taught and was accessible outside of class time.
Chem in general is very hard but she offers guided notes to help your learning which i found amazing. I took chem1030 before with Barton, and she was HORRIBLE. Forbes teaches in a way that actually allows you to learn.
A great professor for freshmen to get acclimated to college lectures. She uses fill in the blank notes and explains very well. It definitely takes work and studying, but her tests are pretty straightforward. She does not do extra credit.
I love Dr. Forbes! She is an amazing teacher and she uses fill-in notes, which is very helpful to study for the exams. You don't have to read the textbook to do well in this class. Her exams consists of 20 MC questions and 1 bonus MC question (5 points). Go to class, take notes, do hw, and do the practice worksheets that she post to succeed.
Dr.Dianna Forbes is great teacher to have in relation to the other chemistry teachers. She is thorough in providing resources to study and notes to fill in. Showing up to the lectures is recommended because she doesn't record lectures and doesn't give filled in notes. The tests are very easy to mess up, but there is a final that drops one of them.
TAKE HER. she definitely makes a hard class a lot more simple. she is very funny in lectures and willing to help outside of class. homework can be long so do not let it stack up. all tests are 20 questions multiple choice and final is cumulative (with a curve). definitely reccomend going to SI sessions, especially before test days.
I decided to take Chem 1040 at 8am next semester because I wanted Dr. Forbes. She is extremely approachable and provides clear instructions on how to master concepts through her guided notes during lectures. Each test (3 overall + 1 final) is 100 points, but only 20 questions so you have to study all material well. Great professor overall.
Dr. Forbes teaches gen chem excellently. The class is tough, but her guided notes and clear explanations make it manageable. Study hard, and unstuck ai can be a great study tool alongside the textbook. She's firm but fair - definitely take her if you can.
Dr. Forbes was easily my favorite professor during my first semester. Your grade is composed of three tests I believe and homework through your online Pearson textbook. You are given the entire time you are in the unit to complete the homework, it's due test day. iPads are very helpful for this class, I just wrote over the notes she provided.
Uses guide notes so come to class if you want the material. Only grades homework and exams. Great person if you get to know her.
She takes every explanation incredibly slowly during the lectures, so getting lost in the information isn't something you'd need to worry about if you show up to class. Her teaching style is similar to that of a high school teacher. I'd recommend her to everyone.
Favorite professor at Auburn! It is in your favor to get to know her, because she is hilarious and really cares about past/present students. I would go to office hours multiple times a week for hours to just work on homework/practice sheets, and she was always available to help. A LOT of practice problems + ask her questions + SI = you'll be good!
Forbes really was a good teacher. The state final is what got me. There is a lot of homework but the tests weren't too bad. She does follow along notes for lectures so attendance is necessary.
She's an awesome professor especially when she's teaching such a hard class. She gives great guided notes, I would recommend summarizing them in your own words to help grasp the conceptual side of it. And do practice problems for the math related problems. Make sure to get the Standardized Chem book to prepare for the final.
Amazing straight forward lectures with no questions left unanswered. A lot of material that is sometimes hard to grasp (but that is all chem 1 classes) but she does a great job of breaking it down and making sure it is all there. Pay attention, attend class, and heavily review your notes after each class to stay on top of it and you should do fine
Literally the best teacher ever. Just go to class and do the homework before tests. She makes chemistry so much more understandable. I took her for 1030 and 1040 and I will forever recommend her. She is awesome
Dr. Forbes is amazing. I'm taking her after having a bad chem I professor and she is making chemistry actually ENJOYABLE. I am not good at chem and do not understand it easily at all, but her lectures and notes are verbatim her tests and she is both caring and amazing at her job. I would 100% recommend students take her for chem!
Very consistent in her assignments. If you don't do the homework on pace with the lectures, it can quickly catch up to you. She knows everything she is talking about. Much harder in my opinion than 1030 but same structure and almost all math. Solid professor and would take her for organic if she ever taught it.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to go if you want to do well. Great professor. Tests are all multiple choice and SI helps a ton. Homework can stack up before tests if you don't space it out. She clearly cares about her students and their success. Love her and would definitely take her again.
Really good lectures with guided notes, tests were super difficult and 20 questions long but really prepared us for final exam. Overall, highly recommend her over any of the other chem professors, just put in the work on homework and exam prep and you'll be fine
i love forbes!!! shes really good at explaining the concepts in her guided notes and gives a lot of resources for you to do your best. go to the SI sessions they helped me a lot!
Had her for 1030 and 1040, does a great job of explaining concepts but goes fast so be prepared. She has fill-in-the-blank notes which is honestly the best thing in the world. Tests are 80% of the grade (20% final+ 60% lecture exams) so STUDY. The homework doesn't prepare you for tests, do the practice tests posted. SI helps a bit too.
She posts guided notes on Canvas that show everything you need to know for the exam. The homework is due the night before the exam and it's online. The final is standardized(ACS) so prepare accordingly through the ACS practice books/reviews. She goes super slow during class which made it boring so I skipped lecture and studied homework instead.
Dr. Forbes is the best professor I've had at Auburn. Show up to class. She uses guided notes, and they are not posted online. Don't let the homework sneak up on you, it takes a while. If you know everything in the exam guide, you'll do fine. Also, if you took AP Chem, this class won't be too hard.
I love Dr. Forbes but this class in general is very difficult!!! She's a really good teacher and knows her stuff. Shes sooooooo friendly but don't expect to do well on her exams cause the topics are difficult, but she really tries to prepare you for ACS. She's the best chem prof compared to others, but chem dept show allow more than 3 exams.
1040 is easier than 1030 and I had Forbes for both. The difference for 1040 was that the ACS final was hardly like anything we studied all semester. Even the ACS practice book couldn't prepare me for that final and I got Bs on all 3 tests during the semester. She did not prepare us enough for that final and it made my grade suffer tremendously.
Dr. Forbes is an amazing professor and makes a difficult course very easy to manage with the proper amount of effort. To clarify, the class is NOT easy and requires hard work, but Dr. Forbes makes everything easy to understand as long as you are willing to pay attention and you actually do the homework.
Love her! Took her for the second semester on purpose. Lectures are not mandatory. Her tests are always 21 questions multiple choice and she only counts 20. Could do better in terms of prepping kids for the ACS, but, a great person. Super straightforward and very caring. Easy to access during her office hours, too! Great option for chem!
Take her if you can for CHEM over any of the others. She uploads fill-in notes that she basically reads off of for class, fine I guess. She also replaces your lowest test w final if it's higher which was useful. I went to ~70% of lectures and learned on the homework a lot. She seems sweet though and readily acknowledges if she made a mistake in cal
Great teacher. Guided notes. Test heavy but will be fine if study in advance
She teaches through fill in the blank during lecture which is not a good way to learn and never truly explains enough. The class is so content heavy each week. I never understood her lectures. Honestly, just take this class at a community college because you will get way more help and better teaching.
Took Forbes for gen chem 1 and her lectures were very easy to follow. There are a few exams and all have 20 MC questions, which is the only downside, because there is no partial credit.
Took for 1030 and 1040, got As in both. Great teacher, absolutely worth an 8am. Go to every class for notes (even though attendance isn't mandatory, you NEED to go) and try to fully understand the homework. Very manageable to pass with a high grade if you pay attention and use ALL of the practice materials she provides.
Professor Forbes was a great professor and would highly recommend taking her for Chem 1030. Her lectures were pretty much fill in the blank which is awesome for a harder class. Her tests are also all multiple choice and not to hard.
Dr. Forbes is the best Chemistry teacher. She is very knowledgeable and clearly explains everything in class with her notes. If you pay attention to the lectures and dedicate time outside of class, you should succeed.
I love Dr. Forbes' class. She's very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches, and she's always real with you. She also explains her expectations and what we need to study very well. I would absolutely take her again for future chem classes
Forbes is a professor that genuinely cares and is relatively available. During her lectures she does guided notes that are very helpful. She does a good job at simplifying more difficult concepts and tells you exactly what to memorize for the exam. Exams aren't easy
This is a college level chemistry class. She will provide you with everything you need for her exams. Any bad grades you truly are your own fault. She cares about her job and goes over everything that she expects of you. And they are reasonable.
A great teacher with clear notes and rigorous deadlines. If you do not attend the lecture, you will not know what to do.
You're only graded on HW and Tests but as long as you show up to class and try then you will do great. Guided notes are easy to follow but you need to show up to class. No recordings or slides are posted.
Super hard material (it's chemistry duh) but she cares about her students. Straightfoward lady who teaches well. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but she doesn't give out the notes if you miss, so try not to miss class!!
If you are not good at chemistry DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, YOU WILL FAIL (speaking from experience). If you decide to take it anyway, pick a god and pray that it works.
Dr. Forbes is a great option for chem 1030! She gives guided notes for all of the units, but you have to attend class in order to fill them in. The class is tough just because of the content, but she does a good job of teaching.
do not like her as a person, but a good professor. the homeworks are for correctness (but 10 tries each question), but a dumb thing to lower your grade by not trying. great bc she explains chem as if you've never taken it before, exams are straightforward and graded out of 20, 21 questions.
I LOVE Dr. Forbes. The class is not easy but I learned well from the way she lectures and she's easy to listen to. It is very exam heavy but she gives one point extra credit on every test, along with posting many extra worksheets (almost too many) to do at your own will. I will be taking her again next semester!
Dr. Forbes it great, chemistry is hard but she explains things well. Her tests are way easier than the homework and practice too. you just have to manage the homework.
I would not recommend taking this class. In total including tests there was no more then 10 assignments so it was hard to bring your grade back up if you messed something up. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend going to class if you want to pass. To teach she goes quickly through worksheets not really explaining how to do the problems.
I loveeeee her. The tests are usually easier than the practice exam and all the other practice problems we have to do. Besides the final, they were all manageable and easy to pass if you know what you're doing. Make sure to do notes and homework and show up to class. She'll answer any questions you have and shes an amazing and nice person
Dr. Forbes is the goat. Gen chem is hard, but it's a class that gives you what you put into it. Study hard and things should turn out well for you, and Dr. Forbes is kind and very willing to help. I would absolutely recommend taking her. Extra 5 points on every exam, too.
I went to all of her lectures and I barely made a B. She does not really care about students individually so don't expect her to even try to know your name. Tests are really hard, but the first test is pretty easy so don't let it fool you. Do all of the homework, those points are crucial and they could be the difference between a B and a C.
TAKE FORBES! I did take AP chem so I had some knowledge coming in, but overall I felt that she taught in a way that made everything easy to understand. I thought her tests were easier than AP tests. Just do all the homework and extra practice and you will succeed.
Dr. Forbes is an incredible professor who teaches a tough course. She is well educated on her topic and is not hesitant to help. She makes the lectures easy to understand and provides a lot of resources to succeed. You will have to work for your grade but she will help in every possible way as long as you reach out.
Dr. Forbes is a solid professor. She makes study notes for her lectures that are used in class. She is pretty funny and engaging, but I do wish she could have spent more time on certain subjects and less on others, though that is a personal opinion. Her exams during the year are pretty difficult, but the ACS at the end is honestly easier.
I think she was a great teacher, and her tests were very fair if you completed the homework throughout the semester, applied yourself diligently, and utilized the resources she provided.
Chemistry as a whole just sucks, but Forbes class is the best you'll get. Tests are on the easier side as far as chem 1030 tests go, practice with the sheets she posts on canvas well in advance and you'll be fine. Office hours are very helpful. Final is standardized, but her tests and class prepare you pretty good for it.
All test are MCQ, she is unhelpful in and outside of class. Notes are all fill in the blank. Chemistry is rough, she made it worse
Chemistry is incredibly difficult, but I would have failed without Dr. Forbes. To survive the final, buy the study book at the start of the semester and use it daily. Go to class and attend every SI and review session you can if you want anything above a C.
Forbes is AWESOME. She gives so much practice material for exams and her lectures are really easy to follow. Your grade will depend on how much effort you're willing to put in, because she provides so many materials. Would recommend getting ASC study guide for final - not every topic on it will be covered in class.
