Very drab and stern personality, does not give you enough time to take notes...unclear teaching at times but not a bad teacher
If Mis Berman is drab and stern,I believe I must be half dead! She is a very nice and adorable teacher, always ready to help her students. She is extremely open minded and never throws any commonplace or stupid fact as some polisci teachers do in front of the dull students with no culture. Very knowledgeable and her class is never boring! Take her!
She's a really cool professor, however just a little disorganized, but once you get over that the class kicks ass
She is very cool and nice. It seems that she cares a lot about her students. She is very smart as well. I really enjoyed her class, definitely a teacher you should take. She gives you the questions for the test, an easy A for me...
I just had my last cass with her today and I have really enjoyed my time in her class. It was a very relaxing and interesting class. She is so intelligent and a lovely teacher. Oh and she is also the professor with the coolest sneakers on campus!
shes a nice teacher and can be a little mean sometimes. she doesnt like when people talk over her. dont have to go to class, she doesnt take role. its hard to understand her when she teaches. talks fast. doesnt give study guides. gives quizes. the quizes are pretty hard, HAVE TO STUDY and PAY very close attention to her lecture.
nice teacher, but i dont recommend her. and wouldnt want to take her again. quizzes and tests were hard and confusing. not all questions came from the text, some came from her lectures.
She is so sweet. Someone said she can be mean sometimes. I don't know how this can be possible? She makes the subject very interesting, I think it's because she knows a lot about world politics. Good sense of humor too. Not hard to get a good grade in her class, she gives you the questions before the test so there is no surprise.
She is the sweetest profesor I've ever met! So easy to pass her class. All you have to do is read the chapter the night before. So hard to get lower then a B in her class. Take her for Political Science 1!!!!
She was so messy !! Very insecure, and not organized at all. The students in that class didn't help either. I felt that I was wasting my time every time I went to class. If you just DON'T CARE about learning, take this class ;)
She mightbe a nice person, but she really sucks at teaching. She is very unorganized and you have to play games with her to figure stuff out. DONT waste your time with her!
Diane is super nice, laid back, and very smart. She gives easy quizzes based directly from the book. The mid-term and final are all essay/short answer questions, where it is your turn to show what she lectured on. Very fair. One of my favorite profs at smc which isn't saying much. those who say she isn't clear and unorganized are idioit liers.
She was not great at introducing new material so I had trouble figuring out what she was talking about. I got an A in the class, I have no idea how I did. I must have aced the final but never knew what the final was really on. She was sweet but did not learn as much as I was looking forward to. The book was more helpful than lectures.
Absolute delight of a woman. Couldn't ask for a more caring and light hearted professor. She is very aware of worldly and local events, political and social. Exams were fair, take good lecture notes and you'll succeed.
Berman is a nice teacher. Her midterms are pretty easy & as long as u read & understand the assigned chapters you should be able to do well in her class.
Very disorganized professor. Once gave a student the answer to a confusing test question and then marked it off as wrong when grading the exam. Once confused Lumumba and Mobutu and didn't correct it (this, from a S. African citizen). Numerous facts were wrong in lecture, confusing most students. Lecture is far less important that the readings.
She is a wonderful woman, and a decent teacher. She is always trying to help her students and makes sure everyone is on pace. She hardly gets off topic and makes you want to go to her class. She is fair and can be somewhat of a pushover. Her finals are easy because she tells you what's on them and there is no homework. WHat more do you want?!
pol sci 1: excellent teacher. 2 exams, and final. the testing is essay/short answers/with multiple choice. The final was the easiest of the 3. Easy A if you pay attn and study! She's very clear on what to read and study. Attendance not mandatory, but helps to go to every class. I made an A, w effort tho.
completely unorganized and repetitive. dropped class after two weeks and took w, just to get away from her. rude to her students and not very knowledgable about topics.gave wrong information, years & dates on more than one occasion. maybe summer was too much for her, but unless you can read minds avoid her...
Dr. Berman is a tremondous professor, who is ORGANIZED her power point presentations puts the content in context, her exams are based on the readings. She is an organized professor whose lectures are clear, although her section on Russia, was awful, obviously it wasn't her expertise but overall she is a gem. I highly recommend her!!
SHE IS VERY NICE. BUT DO NOT TAKE HER IN THE SHORT SEMESTERS..EVERYDAY SHE HAS HER STUDENTS COPY FROM HER POWERPOINT. HER POWERPOINTS ARE USUALLY VERY FULL MAKING IT HARD TO LISTEN AND WRITE AT THE SAME TIME. SHE BASE HER GRADING ON 4 TEST..WITH ONLY 20 QUESTIONS ON EACH TEST..FOR THESE REASONS IT IS HARD TO DO GOOD IN HER CLASS
she may be better in longer full semesters, but for the short(winter/summer) you might want to stay away. i talked to her during summer and she even admitted to me she was having a hard time. hopelessly unorganized and repetitive..there are better teachers out there...
Absolutely horrid teacher, worst that I've ever taken at SMC and I wish that I had the common sense to drop her early on in the semester when I had the chance. Incredibly boring teacher, her tests are incredibly hard. Highest grade anyone got in any of her classes this semester was a C, no A's or B's. Absolutely ****, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!
For me, I consider her a lazy prof. She reads off her slides, and doesn't really add her own input. Its like a living textbook teaching the class. I understand how she says that UCs are going to be difficult, but theres no way that not one student was able to get better than a C. hmm maybe its not the students here, its the TEACHING!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO GET ANYTHING HIGHER THAN A C!! that's all i'm gonna say.
I learned to love this class. I have read other students' comments and wonder if they attended the same class. How could anyone say this professor is lazy? I think powerpoint presentations make note taking much easier, and you do need to take notes.
This page is total proof why rate my professor is so unreliable. So she's not the most animated professor in the world, so what? She is quite brilliant and she knows what she's talking about. She basically tells you what she expects out of you. The really challening part is the multiple choice on the tests. Listen to her. Shell teach you things.
All of these negative haters have no effing idea what they're talking about. Professor Berman is AMAZING! She is so helpful and really listens to the needs of the students. The only reason I may have been reluctant to put this review up is because I don't want to have alot of competition when trying to enroll in her classes ;)
Great teacher, lots of reading on your own, however the exams are fair. And she kinda tells you during class what she will be testing you on. One you receive the test there will be no surprises, that's for sure. All exams consist on multiple choice and essay questions.
Knowledgeable, great teacher, helpful, doesn't try to trick you on tests.Bottom line: do the reading and you should end up with at least a B.
enunciates very clearly
LOVE HER!!!!!SHE'S REALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT WHAT SHE'S TEACHING; WANTS YOU TO PARTICIPATE. JUST DO THE READINGS AND PASS 3 TESTS!!!!HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.
She's very knowledgeable and a great prof. I studied only 1-2 days b4 each exam and got an A. U need to memorize details and put them into your answer to essay qs. W/O details, u don't get an A; u get a B or C.
Amazing! Loved her, she's very fair when it comes to grading. I took two of her classes, and she got me so fascinated in Political Science. Her view on politics and the world is so level minded and sane; its very refreshing. There are very few people like her in los angeles, and its inspiring. Take her class, youll become a lot brighter!
She is the best professor! She is very clear about what's going to be on the test. All you have to do is come to class, take notes, and listen to her. She is a very knowledgeable and interesting. She knows a lot about politics and definitely can answer any question. She is great. I took her in the fall for comparative and got an A. Take her!
She's the most biased teacher I've ever had in my life. She's pro-American and if you utter any comments that doesn't go with her agenda she tries to put u down all semester long. Her multiple tests are pretty hard. She offers example quizzes online but they don't help at all. I got a B and that was with A LOT of work. I would recommend her to peop
i love her!! she is the sweetest prof at smc. SO helpful and pretty funny. her mult choice questions are from the book and she practically tells you what the essay questions are. Highly recommend her!
Berman uses PowerPoint so class is mainly lecture + discussion. She tends to go off topic a lot, hence the syllabus is "ambitious" meaning you won't get through it. Not necessarily an easy 'A' but if you read the textbook carefully and write strong detailed essays, you'll do fine.
I f---- STUDIED MY ASS OFF EVERYTIME AND STILL GOT A D. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THIS LADY. YEA SHE KNOWS HER STUFF BUT SHE ALWAYS WANTS TO BE RIGHT AND DONT ACCEPT OTHER'S PERSPECTIVES.
It?s online class. Yet, she rarely replies to your questions. If you complained about it and she is going to threaten you to DROP from the class. She doesn?t know how to manage the online class technically. So it makes you confusing. Never ask her. She ignores you on the email. You will feel very humiliated by her. Her inside is TRASH! Never take h
So I thought poli sci online will be easy. not really. She expects your threads to be perfect. Make sure they are long and give good concrete examples. I did really bad on the first 2 but well on the other 2. If I knew how to do them in the beginning I wouldve gotten an A instead of B.Her online exams and quizzes are also tough. Study before.
Dr. Berman is an incredibly kind & helpful professor who really does care about her students & their success. That being said, she is a bit disorganized and often repeats herself. If you need clarity on the issue, go to her after class. All of her lectures are powerpoint and available on her website. Reading while not required is hugely important!
I took her Political science1 class in the short semester.I loved it!it wasnt that hard, and it was one of my 1st classes at SMC,but she helped me a lot!she is very helpful,if you actually go to her and ask her(politely)to help. She is adorable, and I'd say EASY.She lectures a lot,u have to take notes from powerpoint too at the same time.she's amazin
Very good professor. Visit her in her office if you have any questions. I used to visit her and chat about history and politics, and she got to know me pretty well which certainly helps. She is an expert in her field, and sometimes asks difficult essay questions, but is a fairly easy grader so it's not a problem. Take good notes off her slides.
Dr. Berman is a woman of the world, by saying it I mean she has gained the knowleadge as well as the experience around the globe, due to her intense travelling and experience in the field. She is always up-to-date with the news and throws questions mixing the content of the lecture with the news content. It`s much more appealing if you enjoy politi
She is very helpful and she does care about her students...if u have any concerns go to her office hours and talk to her u see that she is very reasonable. She is a little bit disorganized and her mc questions are kinda hard but overall excellent professor!
Her test are hard. And I think she is overrated in how helpful she is. I went to her office to ask for help and she acted like if she didnt have time when I was the only one there and didnt help at all. She is also unorganized.
If you couldn't get an A in her class you are not an A student. Very brilliant woman who only wants to see an interest and effort on your part.
She's a REALLY good teacher. very knowledgeable. I had a lot of stuff going on that semester and I regret not being able to give her more of my time but she is awesome. Her tests are a bit hard but if you read you will pass.
She is VERY boring and often goes off topic. Her teaching method is scattered, and she is very unclear of what she wants from you. Powerpoints online is the only pro. Attendance not manditory. I reccomend being VERY interested in International Relations, not reccomended for people who are taking this class for anything other than a prereq.
just... read the textbook and commit to it because her lecture and the powerpoints won't help. but she is just so funny and super nice, witty and very smart! i really like her as a person but a mediocre prof, really unorganized and changes things in syllabus
Great teacher, took her in fall 2011 and taking her again in spring 2012, wonderful lady, nice and very knowledgeable, can be a bit disorganized but quizzes n exams r not difficult at all, highly recommend
The worst teacher/professor I have ever had in my life.Shes pompous and all she does is crack jokes.Doesnt give a damn about her students and she is so unorganized. Her quizzes are on stuff that she never even talks about.I dont recommend her she is absolutely horrible. You have to suck up to her to get a decent grade.
Great teacher. Thoroughly interesting. Maybe not the great at explaining but if you get to know here a shes a fascinating woman, and really willing to help if your willing to put the hard work in. She changed my goals in life, and inspired me to do well. Great teacher!
Lovely English lady. She's very funny and you will find yourself laughing at the stuff she says. Overall, the class is pretty easy and doesn't demand much from you. Don't fall behind on the reading schedule though. Your entire grade is based on THREE tests ONLY. Do bad on one and you really can't get an A anymore so don't forget to read the book!!
Very disorganized but very knowledgeable. Make sure you read and attend class as she will help you out at the end. The essay topics are straight forward as she will hint about them in class. Multiple choice straight from the book.
Bermann is so brilliant that it's almost intimidating! Truth be told, though, most of the grade depends on the book-reading. Also, make sure you look at the online source of the book and their quizzes, too. The essays come from her lectures,so don't depend too much on the slides! You will be guaranteed an A if you heed my advice :)
There are only three grades in her international politics class, so try not to screw up even once. With that being said, the class is interesting and somewhat difficult. Read the book very often, as her tests rely heavily on textbook material. Not much else to say since, as I said before, there's only 3 grades in the class.
(scholars) Dr. Berman is amazing. She is very knowledgeable and is passionate about what she teaches. 2 map quizzes, midterm paper, midterm essay test, final research paper. GO TO CLASS and DONT be late. Loved everything about the class and her. Never a dull moment.
Exams are based on her lectures and textbook readings. She sometimes circles around the topic and goes off into tangents. However shes a generous grader. An amazing teacher that you will learn A LOT from. She's def worth taking and will give you a good grade as long as you meet her half way.
I liked this teacher since she was very realistic but a little too biased for my taste. Unfortunately, she is very disorganized which makes it difficult to keep up. The test aren't easy at all but are easy if you know what she wants. Overall, out of 10 I'd give her a 7, so she is alright.
Read the textbook, attend class, think and talk in class. Grade is based on 3 tests (mc and essay). Holds office hours and can talk to her after class.
I had no previous interest in Pol Sci until I took her I.R class! Show up to every lecture & you will get an A on the essay portion of the tests. Read your textbook for the MC portion of your test! PAY ATTENTION! That is seriously ALL I did to obtain an A. Don't be lazy!
I wish I could write an entire essay about how incredibly stimulating Berman is. No joke, this woman is a wealth of knowledge and we as students should only be so lucky as to have her share it with us. Follow her instructions and you'll do fine. Oh--and remember to enjoy the ride!
I took her 2012 Fall.....and this professor is full of knowledge...I personally think her lectures are very interesting and opens up your mind.....I don't think she is the easiest teacher but she isn't impossible...I actually really liked her class...I did an extra credit at the end of the semester and I think my grade boosted to an A
This professor is awful. Unorganized, goes off topic all the time (one lesson was spent talking about TV-shows for 30 minutes) and the tests require that you read the book extensively since she covers about half a page per class. If you love the subject more than life itself go for it but otherwise stay away.
You don't get many chances to boost your grade. It's based on tests and that's it. Screw up on one, and youre screwed for the class.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! shes very unorganized and unclear! she jumps from topic to topic, never gives a clear idea of what is expected from assignments and tests, and is just confusing overall! she gave us 4 quizzes and one essay final. she also gets grouchy and mean really randomly!
Prof. Berman is a very sharp woman, with whom I would love to discuss politics over beer. As a teacher, I found her class a bit all over the place, with endless tangents and not much advice ahead of tests, etc. She is quite the neo-liberal, which made most subjects feel tainted by bias. Requested D/W to retake the class with someone else, got a C.
This professor is amazing. I just graduated college and would go back retake a class with because her lectures are so educational and entertaining. She's made political science so interesting and fun. In addition, she speaks from her own experience by living in South Africa. She's a fascinating woman and it's rare to come across people like her.
PROS: Very nice teacher, easy to talk with, very funny and knowledgeable when it comes to politcal science. CONS: Three quizzes, two exmas, one paper, no extra credit. If you bomb an exam, kiss that A goodbye. OVERALL: I recommend Berman as she very understanding and if you study her slides, you will be fine.
Great professor for Comparative Politics. She has a wealth of knowledge and is entertaining to listen to. Focus in class, study your notes, and you will do fine. I got an A and really did not try at all. Her style is narrative with a historical perspective of state development. Take her.
She is very friendly and intelligent. She just seems to play the semester by ear. It shows. Deciding the day of what slides, out of her stockpile, to show you. Slides are repetitive, sometimes contradict. She blames it on drinking, I don't doubt her. Tough grader, very picky. Sucks because I feel the knowledge is there, but just poor delivery.
easy class, just very disorganized and very few points in the system. her class consisted of 4 mc quizzzes and one final essay. a tough grader!!!! she jumped around on topics and slides everyday and was easily distracted and went off topic, so not much was done in class. you can just read and study notes yourself. the class was just a mess!
She is great teacher and its a fun class. Never really reviewed your grades and I'm not the best student but I thought I did enough to pass the class. I guess i was wrong. Lesson learn, attend office hours.
This class involves one to READ THE BOOK! Her lectures and summaries alone will not help you pass her class. She will help you out in regards to your grade. If you fail a quiz or test, it won't mean you will land with a F or D. She may be off topic at times due to class interaction, but if you read the book you WILL get an A. Plus go to class!
She's a good professor. She really is. But your grade is determined from very few points (3 tests-that's it). So if you do badly on one, even if you an A+ on the other two you won't get an A in the class. Also, no extra credit. Tests are based on both her lectures AND the book. You HAVE to read the book and study HER LECTURES from class. Kinda tough
I loved Berman, her test are hard but you just have to keep up with the reading. Shes not a stickler for numbers, she grades more on your improvement and understanding of the material.
You have to read the book and understand the course material to do well on the exams. There is no homework, just two exams and a few quizzes.
If you're a poli sci major and you don't take a class with Professor Berman you attended SMC for nothing. She is by far the best professor. She always keeps her classes interesting and funny, her humour is contagious and i can't emphasise how helpful she is if YOU ASK HER for help. I took all her classes, and do not regret a single day of attendanc
She's not liked by those caught up with the point system & strictly following the syllabus. I found her fluid style refreshing & stimulating; lectures are conversation-based & very Socratic. I disagree with her politics, but she's logical, presenting material honestly & without bias. Not an easy A, I'm a PS major & I really had to earn it.
It is not a tough class, but you have to do a lot of reading. There is no homework, only a few tests that are multiple choice and essay. She grades easy on the essay, but the multiple choice is from the textbook and some of the questions can be tough.
She is easy going, gives you all the notes she uses in class, and discussing the lesson in the book. She fair in her grading, this is the second class I have taken with her and I would take another class with take should would teaches.
This online class with Prof. Berman is USELESS. You can tell that the professor put no time at all into this class. Dates were wrong. She never responds to emails or students questions in the online office - NEVER. You do not get any feedback on anything you write and she does not engage in the class at all with her students.
Dr. Berman is such an amazing professor. She is very helpful and makes the class interesting. She's nice, but don't think you can take advantage of that. Multiple choice on tests are based on the book and essays are based off of lectures. She covers the material very well. If she sees you've improved, she'll give you a better grade.
AMAZING!!! I loved her class, she is so much fun. All what she use during her lecture is posted on eCompanion, she totally prepare you for midterms and finals, there is no surprise. I am totally taking her again !!
Tough essay grader, but accumulative grade. Lectures off powerpoints. No homework. Final group paper and in class essay. Few written response assignments. Great professor. Very knowledgable.
First of all, you have to attend this class every lecture because she gives attendance randomly, Do not be a slacker who thinks grades should be fed to you like a hand feeding a baby. Read and write down an outline on what you think she might ask for the essays. When she gave back exams back she called me a Star, all due to hard work.
This was an eight-week online class, a lot of reading! Her tests are pretty hard (one quiz for each chapter; up to two chapters a week), one midterm and one final. Weekly 500 words threads. Do the reading and you'll be fine. She will not answer any of your questions though, so be ready to learn this by yourself.
She is really nice. Tests are really hard though. Even if you learned all the stuff there still will be questions that you don't know.
5 tests/ quizzes. Optional final. Also had her for pol sc 2. Hilarious professor but knows her stuff.
Professor Berman has a clear-cut syllabus that tells you everything that needs to be done and by what date. Assignments are very clear and you know what you need to do to receive a grade. The only issue is that she hardly responds to e-mails so for an online class, it was a little bit more difficult but it turned out being fine. I'd take her again.
350 characters is not enough to describe how wonderful Professor Berman is. I took her class just for the fun, and boy am I glad! She is very knowledgable, and also very hilarious. She has an extraordinary personality to match her simple and easy teaching method. Read the chapter and it's a guaranteed A on the exam! Take her, you won't regret it!
Really looked forward to this class, having heard she's an amazing instructor But her online class was honestly buying the book and reading it. Doesn't interact with the class, practically ignores emails not to mention lectures are simply outlines from the textbook teacher resources. Felt more like weekly book club meeting than a college course.
it was a good online class, It was an easy A all the stuff is in the book so it's not bad at all if you just read you will be fine. She's nice she did respond to my questions and emails. Anyways it was a good class i recommend.
BEST lectures given by a highly intelligent professor! Wish she teaches more classes. Purely for the interesting lectures did I drag myself up at 6, brace the morning 405, then the battle scene at SMC parking to make it to her class at 8am. No HW, no paper, no roll call. 3 exams of multiple choices and essays. Material covered in powerpoint, notes.
Dr. Berman is clearly a knowledgeable and informed prof, although her scattered and unconventional grading system may prove to be a hurdle for some students. SHOW UP TO CLASS ND PARTICIPATE. Make sure she knows your name. Read the assigned chaps and take note on the topics she's gonna test u on (she mentions them). Ask q's, and show that u care.
I also took her for Political Science 1 because I needed more credits and loved her poli sci 2 course. I love politics and enjoyed learning about other countries. The grades are based off her exams which are based off of the readings. Do the readings! Her lectures are to reinforce the readings. The more you show that you read the better.
Awesome Professor! took her and inspired me to major in political science. great with students and really genuinely cares about all in class, which she notices and takes into account when you go and ask questions or clarify questions. 4 10 point quizzes, drops one, a paper, and a final. Best prof ever
Take her online poli sci 7 class at your own risk. If you are willing to read an entire textbook, then take her. If you are someone who hates reading and writing and expects the study material to be just powerpoint slides and notes, then this is not the class for you. But ultimately I learnt a great deal so I have no regrets taking this class:)
It does not feel like she cares about this class. You read, take a bunch of quizzes (2 per chapter) and write a weekly essay. She never responds to my questions for clarification. Dates are wrong on the syllabus. Had an essay due on THANKSGIVING! Who does that?! If we had more than 4 days to do all the reading and writing it would have been fine.
You're going to have to rely solely on your own reading and abilities for her class. She literally puts in minimal effort. Learned nothing from her and regret taking this class. TRUST ME IT WILL BE A HUGE WASTE OF YOUR TIME.
She is indeed unorganized as the others said; Took the quiz off online at the very last minute and tends to forget stuff. Her lecture are great but what she thought barely showed during quiz you have to read the book in order to be able to do the quiz.
Yes, she is brilliant, entertaining, fun, etc, however, her lectures are ultimately irrelevant as all of the quizzes (the ONLY grades in the class) are pulled solely from the book. She constantly moved quizzes, cancelling two (one at the very last minute) so you never know how many points you can count on toward your grade. Very frustrating class.
Only reason I didn't do well was because I didn't take it seriously enough. If you pay attention, stay up to date on and frequently check canvas, and do the reading then you can easily get an A. The readings not even 100% necessary (but extremely helpful for the quizzes, answers are literally cited from the book). Online quizzes/assignments.
Prof Berman will teach you things you didn't sign up to learn, but nevertheless they are valuable and priceless. She's extremely intelligent so just listening to her thoughts on anything is an eye opener. Participate, ask questions, go to office hours, show youre a critical thinker. She'll love you and odds are you'll get an A!
Not an easy class. Muss Read the book thoroughly if you want to get an A. Go to office hours.
Best Professor at SMC laissez-faire! Poli Sci won't make sense unless she tells you how it is. Definitely recommend
The tip top of the SMC poli sci department - hands down. She's got great stories with fun turns that lead to deep insights. She doesn't play around, so if you're looking to get your boo-boos to get kissed go take Tahvidrian or whatever his name is. Would take again, if only to hear her meander on about whatever she deems fit to speak about.
I'm at USC now but I still miss the class I took with Prof. Berman. Her lecture style was inspiring, full of insightful perspectives. She encouraged interactions and questions. Very funny too. Class had 2 exams, attending class and reading PP was enough. If you think her class had too much to read, you haven't aimed high enough for yourself.
Professor Berman is one the most practical professors at SMC. I always suggest other classmates to take her PolySCI. Show up to class, make sure to write the power points down. What she goes over in class is whats on the test. Read. This class is not difficult, its up to you to come to class. She educates truth about the world. Amazing Class!!!!!!!
Trust me guys, don't take this class. I took her class online and it consisted of a few online quizzes (that her power points did not have anything to do with) and threads that she graded very strictly. I had a 4.0 GPA and this is my first B. I'm a hard working student, but in an 8 week course I still didn't know what she was looking for by the end
Dr. Berman is a great knowledgeable professor who understands and is passionate about the material she teaches. Quizzes on Canvas can be tough so read the text and lectures given. She uses her own lectures and Text on the quizzes and exams so study both. She likes class discussions so ask questions or else she will threaten to end class early.
Professor Berman made waking up for an 8AM class something that I actually looked forward to. Her lectures were very interesting, and her sense of humor was very engaging. You definitely have to work for your A in her class, but as long as you show up everyday, take notes, and refresh yourself by reading the textbook, it should be very manageable!
If you put effort in her class, she will put effort into you! If you take notes during the lectures, then you can notice that she highlights pretty much everything that'll be on the tests. Though it could be hard because she goes on tangents quite often. Sometimes you gotta look up what she says b/c not always 100% accurate. Overall great professor
I took both her polsci 7 and 2. Words can not explain how amazing she is. If you take good notes and read the textbook you will definitely do well in this class. If you slack and don't come to class you may be in trouble. Lectures are super interesting and she is one of the most amazing professors on campus. YOU NEED THIS CLASS.
Basically, this class comes down to an essay. If you have a different world view she'll pass you but you won't receive an A. It's like that.
I took her online Pol7 class during a winter semester. I am a straight A student... and I got a B. Her instructions are not clear-- her method of assigning quizzes (and there are a lot of them) is confusing. She is a tough grader on discussions and doesn't give clear feedback to help you improve. And she is inflexible with make ups.
I took her online class , honestly one of the worst classes i have ever taken. She gives no feedback whatsoever , so you don't know what you're being graded on , takes days to reply to e-mails(sometimes doesn't even bother to do that). Terrible experience , would not recommend.
This professor will ask for a book that is an old edition and you will not find it in the bookstore. She makes so many mistakes while giving out the information in her classes and students have to correct her about dates etc. She smells like cigarettes badly. She talks without letting students participate. The worst Bad and boring class ever!.
Good teacher.
The syllabus does not mention any online office hours, which is mandated by state law btw. Hard to get ahold of.
It is clear that this professor does not care about the success of her students. She does not respond to emails. She does not give any feedback and her syllabus/rubric does not line up with her grading. Be ready to be left in the dark if you take this teacher. Never again....
Dianne Berman does not do a good job communicating outside of class. I took this class online and she grades the discussions very harshly and her quizzes are difficult. Also, remember to not leave the testing site when completing an exam online because she will see it and uses web cam to "prevent" cheating. Just see who else is teaching the class
Never answers emails , never . If you have a questions , good luck . Have to either guess or guess again . Quizzes are recorded with video and microphone . Harsh grader . Basically says its impossible to receive an A on weekly discussions . Cant believe SMC hires these types of professors . Should be fired , immediately . Does not care at all
. Im a high school student completing my final courseload to graduate. i had already taken Advanced Placement European History,4, and advanced placement United States history, 5. Assuming this, I thought the class would be easy. however, she gave all the quizzes on proctorio and when it glitched she wouldnt allow retakes. 3 failed quizzes...
Considering that there are only zoom lectures every Friday, you have no choice but to read the entire textbook back to front. The PowerPoints were a complete joke; it had no real information and rather looked like a template. The textbook and 'chapter outline' were so long and convoluted that it was near impossible to comprehend, let alone retain.
Do not take her! She is the worst at responding emails. The resources she leaves online are a joke. If your grade drops, it is very hard to raise it. The professor has very little sympathy for other students. I have taken other rigorous classes before but this class was terrible. If you have to take this class, read the book!
She doesn't reply to emails with a proper answer she is very lazy. She assigns so much reading with test questions that are so specific it is impossible. The average test scores were C's. The reading is about 70 pages a chapter of pure information and no structure. Her tests also have questions with multiple right answers. Overall she was terrible
Dr. Berman leads a great Global Studies class! Would take her again any day. This course is not for the student who is looking to phone it in nor one ready to apply themselves in their studies. That being said, this course's studies are socially important and Dr. B does an amazing job at providing all the tools and lectures her students need!
No one gets A in her discussion. Really replies to her emails and isnt clear of instructions for discussion posts.
She emailed us once the entire semester (intro +syllabus), and didnt hear from her after that including when I asked for feedback. Quizzes and test scores averaged Cs and Ds every time. Very specific questions and you get 1 min each. She doesnt follow her own syllabus. Upset I wasted a semester on what should have been an interesting class
I was a straight A student until this class. She is not accessible, many emails were sent by me and other students and she almost never responds. The weekly discussion posts are terrible because she grades based on how much she agrees with your analysis. As for the quizzes, the questions are obscure and the only teaching you get is the reading.
Dr. Berman is reckless in her tactics, and has outright lied even against evidence or screenshots. Proctoring software didnt work on the issued Chromebook, it was not until after the drop date I could test. She lied to admissions saying I never turned in anything, screenshots show otherwise.
do not take her, she does not care about her class or students. wish i could give 0
Would not recommend taking this class. She hates zoom and she grades her students extremely difficult. She never responds to emails or canvas messages. Everyone in the class reported her and she had to have an emergency meeting with the dean. If you want to pass or do well in school do not take this teacher!! Good luck:)
Super class, learnt a lot but you have to work for it.
It's a decently interesting class, lots of reading. Very tough grader but doesn't give much feedback to learn from. Also rarely answers urgent e-mails or messages. Make sure to read the entire syllabus before the first day.
You have to learn from reading the textbook, but the quizzes barely cover the topic you read about. I'm taking this class so I can transfer to USC next year and I'm worried my grade will hinder me from doing so. I'm a 3.8 GPA type student as well :/
I have taken 7 IR classes at SMC, all with As, except this one. Dr. Berman is cold, uncaring, rude, and a bad professor. She included material not covered on the final, she does not have office hours, she doesn't check emails, and she is a terrible professor. I do not recommend taking her, and I would encourage SMC students to report her to admin.
Tough Grader but gave no feedback on why points were taken off. Quizzes are a huge part of the class yet she gives absolutely no time to take them. On a 15 question quiz,, there is 15 min to compete, meaning you have a min to read, think, and answer the question. Did not enjoy and do not recommend to take.
Copies all her assignments off Quizlet (not necessarily a bad thing), on free-response, long, meandering answers that say little will get better grades than shorter ones that say more and communicates very snarkily.
In all my time in community college, Berman might be the worst professor I've ever had. A lot of the reviews mention that she was great in person, so perhaps she just doesn't understand how to adjust to online, but her grading on assignments is absolutely ridiculous (and she gives next to no feedback). Do yourself a favor--don't take this class.
I would not take this class again. The quizzes are unnecessarily hard, and you're given no time to finish them. The average for the first online discussion thread was like a 60. If you're a poli sci major I would really suggest reading the textbook we have to read since it's actually a really interesting and informative book.
Dont take the class
reviews are dramatic. ya she doesn't give enough time to take the quizzes but they're easy questions anyways and she knows there are answers online so that's why. its fair. only issue I have is that she grades hard on the threaded discussions that are worth most of your grade. I got Bs on them even tho I answered straight to the point.
Be ready to send emails and never receieve a reply. Be ready to get a B on a discussion post, have a literal copy and pasted response left as "feedback" that won't address what exactly you did wrong and how you can fix it. Oh, and sometimes she'll forget to grade your online quizzes and good luck trying to reach her because she never replies, ever.
Quizzes have multiple right answers but only one is correct, sometimes the blatantly incorrect answer is the correct one. Says this quiz is 50 minutes long with 50 mc questions, but will make sure to surprise you by getting rid of 2 mc questions for 2 essay questions with no time increase. Good luck reaching out to her as well. No feedback either.
Professor Berman is tough! As a USC spring admit, this class was excellent for credit but very difficult overall! The content was interesting, but the discussion threads were graded harshly without personal feedback. One tip is that the more you write, the higher the grade!
If you want to keep your GPA up? Don't take this class. doesn't reply to emails and has no clear criteria and just a c&p feedback. But in case you insist on taking this her, (although I REALLY recommend a diff professor): the more you write, the better, but that unfortunately still doesn't get you great marks. 4.0 student btw (well not after this).
As a student from LSE, but takes classes at SMC for enrichment, Dr. Berman was awful. It wasn't the grade that bothered me, but that they gave no real feedback on discussions: copy-paste generic responses. Furthermore, she is rude through email and makes it clear that she does not read your work while claiming that you have not done the readings.
Material was interesting, it's just the professor wasn't quite helpful. Does not respond to emails and doesn't give any useful feedback. Everything is based off of the textbook so don't bother formulating your own ideas or you'll get a low grade. No extra credits so make sure to copy and past everything from the book to get an A on this class.
She is so hard to please!!! We only have a few assignment so if we do poorly on two assignment, then their is no way to get your Grade up. Considering requesting this class as a p/np to keep my GPA up :(
This class is based 100% of the textbook, if you don't read the textbook you will not pass this class with the threads or quizzes. Most of the quiz answers can be found online but are not worth a lot of points. Your grade will be mainly based on threads which are responses to something about the chapter and they must be direct and not fluff.
Atrocious feedback. Its literally copy and pasted responses from something in the book that has no relation to what you wrote and feedback for improvement. Quizes are timed with not nearly enough time to take the test especially as shell add essay questions which you have 1 minute to write. Her grading criteria is unclear and very hard to please.
horrible professor. I don't recommend taking her class at all but, especially during the summer. Assigns over 100 pages of reading from the textbook each week cramped into one or two 20 question quizzes with a 20 minute time limit. rarely responds to emails and when she does, she will give the snarkiest most unhelpful response ever. save yourself!
Grades weirdly without a good explanation as to why she graded you 56/70 for example. SMC should hire a new, caring, and young professor who will make students learn something new and not force them to completely copy information from the book and the professor's head. Wishing her all the "best". Don't take her so you will save your mental state.
She is the worst professor at SMC.
Professor Berman runs a tough class - it's heavily textbook-focused with little room for creativity. Make sure to do the readings and discussion posts thoroughly, as grades are based primarily on those. Unstuck ai can be a lifesaver for efficient study prep. Overall a challenging but worthwhile course.
She gave me a zero on a 100 point assignment I did which was sketchy but then changed it to a proper grade. Her class isnt hard, I even forgot to buy the book and still ended up with an A. Shes nothing special, can come off a bit rude, but an A is definitely not hard.
I have taken lots of online classes at SMC and this is by far the worst one. She does not hold office hours, and does not respond to emails. If she does respond, it will take at least a week. She grades very harshly, but then doesn't not provide feedback so you don't understand what you did wrong. Avoid taking her at all costs.
I never write reviews, but I had to for this professor. Don't take this class. She links an online ebook that every single assignment is based on, and that version isn't available for purchase and hasn't been since 2023. Hours of reading to answer 20-question quizzes in 20 minutes and threads she grades harshly with little to no feedback.
The professor uses unclear metrics in determining grades for written assignments. All instruction consists of simply reading assigned chapters. The tests are difficult as they are timed with 1 minute allotted for each question and you do not have the ability to change an answer to a previous question or review what you got wrong after submission.
I'm convinced this professor doesn't even read the discussion posts and grades on vibes while copying and pasting the textbook as "feedback". I have been told I did not give examples in my writing when I gave several clear ones. If you're as unfortunate as I am to have her as a professor, better hope you can gain back points on 1 min per Q quizzes.
She grades the discussion posts so harshly that sometimes you feel like how? However, do good on the test, and you'll get an A as those can balance your bad grades you might get on the discussion post. I barely got an A, but I did it. Furthermore, she does not give enough time to do these quizzes which sucks because you are rushing on the quizzes.
The way she grades is so harsh you will start to question everything. I would never take her class again. Horrible professor !!! 20 Question Quizzes with a time limit of 20 minutes. Also grades the discussion post so harshly and copy and paste into comment section.
I took Professor Berman's online class and it does not follow her syllabus and point requirements. Your grade is essentially just tests on the readings you have each week (no assignments at all). She does not give you feedback or provide a rubric for the discussion prompts (a large portion of your grade) and takes weeks to respond to emails.
The worst ever!!!! Don't take her. Seems like she don't care. Gives horrible feedback not to mention every quiz is timed . 20 questions in 20 minutes and 50 questions in 50 minutes for midterms like wow you really give us no time to even think.
Terrible!! I feel like the college should do something about it. She provided little to no guidance and the whole class is based off the textbook. The material was very interesting and it was nice to have a study plan, but mostly felt like I was working on my own. The tests were also really copy and paste from the book, not motivating me at all.
If you read the passages the class is not hard. The course was relatively easy for me since I already took a similar class in HS but still. Make your own notes it'll help and Message her if you have any problems, TRUST. AP students take her, the course will feel familiar.
Don't take her, seriously. Homework consists of weekly quizzes, you get one minute per question and can't go back to the last question after going to the next one if you change your mind. You literally cannot get into contact with her either. Her threads are also graded insanely strictly, and she doesn't give a clear rubric on ANYTHING.
