tries to scare you ff on the first day, but doesn't give as much work as he says he's going too. lets you use notes on in class essays and lets you rewrite your essays after he grades them. won't fail you if you show that you really want the grade! :)
He is a very nice teacher and lets you use notes on test but gives you large writing assingments. He is very very very boring. My advice is not to take him, take someone else if you can.
He's a pretty easy grader, but the class discussions were very boring!
I really enjoyed Dr. Barua-I found the class discussions very interesting and enlightening. He really makes you think. He gives a lot of writing assignments, so if you don't like writing, then this is probably not the best teacher for you, but he's very intelligent and stimulates students thinking.
Boring!! But he does let you use the book and notes for the final.
let out early all the time looks liek a yoga instructor. GRADES VERY HARD.. if credit only take because u will pass but u want an A with BARUA is not going to happen.. but really cares for students and loves the topics being teahc he hates grammer a PLUS!!!
I had Barua for summer course. He is a good teacher, but you will not get an A. He knows if you are trying, and self-proclaims to NOT be a "tight-ass"
hey, the teacher is very hard but he is a good teacher after all. If u serious about what you are taking then he is the one for you.
He gave me the first D I had EVER received for a paper for an English class. It ticked me off just enough to inspire me to work my butt off for the next 12 weeks to earn an A. Getting an A from Barua is acheivable, but it's really hard. It's also well worth it. I learned more from him in one semester than from most of my GWC professors put together.
Dr. Barua is a very good professor. He really know's his stuff.
Guy doesn't know what he's talking about 1/2 the time. His interpretations of works are the only ones acceptable. I quoted something directly from the text and he told me he was wrong. You'll hate this class if you take it with him.

You have to write about 6 papers throughout the semester. Two are in class essays and one is the research paper. None of the essays had to be very long. Usually 3 pages, excpet for the research paper which had to be five or six. He does grade papers fairly hard though. I usually got B minus's on most of my papers but he lets you re-do them usually.
He teaches you about english and he teaches you about life. He is very patient, a fair grader, and covers all topics from all walks of life. He is a doctor, and the head of the english department. He knows his stuff, but is humble, and flexible with the class. I would take him every chance that I could get.
I took him for and 8 week session and it was pretty intense for me, we had a total of 5 essays to write and a research paper. I tried my hardest and got a B. I really did like the class and Mr. Barua, his class discussions were interesting, he really tires to help you out, but he is a hard grader.
BOORRRRIINNNGGG.....I would have to drink one cup of coffee, one energy drink, and chew caffeine gum throughout the class to keep myself awake. I'm sure Dr. Barua knows his stuff, but certainly doesn't show it. He would stop in the middle of his sentences to think about what to say next. Do yourself a favor and don't take him.
The best Professor at GWC, knows his stuff and teaches it well. Gave almost everyone A's!! Highly recommend!!
Very humble for a professor, but still somewhat boring. He is a somewhat rough grader, but has an open mind about interpretations, as long as you have adequate support. Overall, he is a decent professor. But, if you want an easy A, don't take Barua.
He's a nice guy, but I didn't learn much about writing stories. Another inst. took over his class 1/2 way. I've learned so much from her in a few weeks. He gets off topic and seems to know more about teaching literature than how to write fiction.
Very quiet and almost timid of an adult. Worldly in knowledge, however hesitant and unconfident in opinion in fear of conflict or possible misjudgment. Not critical enough during in person critiques, but e-mail critiques are quite deep and thorough. If fiction is your world and reading and writing are your deepest passion Barua is your best friend.
When he reads stories or poems out loud, he is very enticing. He is open-minded to everyone's discussion. His tests are essays, and he also lets you revise them for a better grade. Homework is usually just to read, and then discussion the next day. Not the easiest grader. Overall you get to read some great stuff, but I didn't elevate my writing
Dr. Barua is one of the finest professors out there. If you want to learn, this is the teacher for you. No easy A, you have to work for it. Get to know him. He may surprise you!
Deep knowledge of writing; tremendously helpful information and practices. He has an easy way of engaging you and taking you through various levels of creative writing illumination.
i was a little bored with him at first and wanted to drop, but he's actually a pretty interesting teacher. i loved listening to him read poems. his personality is pretty calm but sometimes he'll come out and say something totally unexpected and hilarious. overall mr. barua is a good teacher and i'd take his class again.
Dr. Barua is soft-spoken and passionate about Eng Lit; he's a published poet. He is not a difficult instructor, he wants to see everyone absorb the literature and write well about it. If you do not make an effort, the class will be hard for you. He thrives on interaction with students; complains when participants are reluctant to interact.
Really sweet guy, has a good sense of humor. He grades essays kind of hard but he is really helpful and really smart. I would definetly take another one of his classes.
Great! Asked thought-provoking questions. I didn't always agree with his interpretation of symbolism but he would listen to my oppinion and respected it. Awesome lit teacher!
There are 3 essays that are a min. of 4 pages. Fair grader. About 60% of the class is on prose and 40% on poetry. He takes attendance, you can gain or lose points based off it. Ocassional quizzes on the readings, just a question or two. You can do presentations for extra credit. Late work is accepted, but penalized. Bluebook final, 3 1-2pg essays.
Barua is a knowledgable and thought provoking professor. His lecture can get a little dry at times, but most of the time he's interesting. There was a decent amount of reading (anthology), but if you've taken eng110 you shouldn't have a problem with it. If you're an English major, you should find this class interesting and of moderate difficulty.
Great teacher! He's fair when grading. He encourages meaningful papers and trust me its not just busy work. no test and quiz's. All we had to do is show up and participate. We had a fair amount of reading, take home essays and four in-class essays. He did let us out early (thank god) Highly poetic and overall a great guy!
Dr.Barua is the bees knees, for lack of a better expression. Theirs no gimmicks to his teaching strategy hes just a genuinely great teacher. Hes thought provoking and helps you cultivate your own writing style. I liked writing before I took his class, but now I cant live without it.I'm looking forward to taking a class of his next semester
My favorite teacher by far! English use to be my worst and most hated subject, and he kept me interested and learning. Amazing teacher! Must take!
Very helpful and nice. Keeps the class interested. No quizzes or tests just a lot of essays and 4? in-class essays. You can turn in late work .. I wish I tried harder for the class.
One word. Boring. Its easy if you show up and do all the paragraphs, papers, and in class essays. The more you write the better. He grades hard and speaks with an accent and very monotone. It was hard for me to stay focused in class but everyone is different. 3 mandatory books from the bookstore for $55 plus tax.
Yes Barua is soft spoken, but if the students bring ideas to the discussion (which is what literature is about) then the classes can be more interesting. He knows what he is talking about, he is nice, and his expectations are reasonable.
Boring class, monotone voice, many essays for a English 10 class. The books are only in GWC bookstore or I found it on craigslist
He gives 5 take home essays and 4 in-class essays. One from each are dropped. Really down to Earth says things like "Does anyone else want to leave early? Maybe we won't have class Wednesday" You need to read the material, listen, and participate in the discussions in order to write a good paper. The easiest of all Eng 110 teachers
I took Professor Barua for both English 81 and English 110 and enjoyed his teachings in both classes. Yes, he has a somewhat quiet voice. However, he is still audible. When the class participates, the lectures are quite fun and enjoyable. Grades fair. He always has helpful input for any of your essays or short stories.
Really liked this class! He is a bit monotone, but in a funny way. I recall times where he made fun of poor essays jokingly. I had an easy time in the class, but a few other classmates that were inconsistent with attendance seemed to have trouble
OMG ... he is so funny once you get to know him. If you go to class and do the work he is pretty easy. In lecture he will say things like, "I don't know why I am talking about this." He grades essay's hard so double check everything. Other then that he is super chill.
Use of textbooks is key to passing, so be sure to complete readings as scheduled on the syllabus, don't wait until the last minute. It's frustrating not being able to express your own opinion, you pretty much get his interpretations only. Overall a good class, I enjoyed it with lots of laughs.
Took his summer freshmen comp class, I gotta say it was pretty intense for a 6 weeks class. We had an essay every week and have some readings for homework. Overall is it not that bad if you keep up with the work. Dr. Barua is an intelligent professor and you can learn a lot from him. PS. he always let us out early!
Had him for Critical Thinking in the fall of 2011. He's brilliant! His lectures are highly comprehensive and he makes sense of what he's teaching you. Go to class, it's the key to passing the class. Don't skip any readings; you discuss them during the next lecture. Take him, he's the only knowledgeable one in the ENGLISH department on campus.
He's great, has compassion truly cares about the students,he love to teach and you'll in turn love the subject because of that. He creates a very friendly, safe, encouraging environment to learn. He's very helpful and knowledgeable I have two classes with him and regret that I couldn't take more because I'm transferring soon.
Very dreamy and hot! Great lectures!
I'm currently taking him for summer, and there is a lot of work within 6 weeks. There is an essay due every week, and assigned reading every day. Overall, I found the class was pretty interesting and enjoyable. Highly recommended!(:
Had him over summer. 6 week course was very intense. You have an essay due every week, and you also have a reading due every class. 4 out of class essays 1000 words each, one research paper 1500 words, and 2 in class essays. Overall material was easy to understand, he is kinda confusing.
Humble, soft-spoken, nice, and provides clear, great lectures! There are 4 essays (3 pages each), 8 reading quizzes, midterm, and final. The class is slow-paced and chill, definitely interesting and enjoyable! He grades quite easy!
Grades based on his imagination, loses his train of thought constantly, and is quite grouchy most days. Class is "easy" but you do a lot of useless bs readings and pointless busy work. wouldnt recommend
He's nice and answers questions. Get to know him and show him you care about the class and he'll help you. Agrees to read and edit your papers if you ask. Simple monotonous class. Not hard to get A, just don't BS your essays
The class is structured in a simple way, grade is based on take home essays, a couple in class essays, a research paper, peer editing groups, and a couple quizzes. He also counts participation as a large part of your grade. If you miss more than three classes he will drop you. As an instructor he is decent. I would recommend.
Nice guy. Lectures and discussions are fun and entertaining. He really is lax on the work, you can turn it in super late and he's ok with it long as you ask nicely. Also is willing to offer loads of extra credit if you're failing.
He is a fair professor; I have had him twice and I have learned that he feeds off the energy of the class. He knows his stuff and is very helpful if you seek his help with something. Great class.
This is my second semester taking an English class with Dr. Barua as the instructor. I find the lectures stimulating, topics interesting, and I receive helpful feedback on my essays. I don't know if you would could consider the class "easy" but I would recommend it to any student serious about writing.
Dr Barua speaks very slowly and at times it felt like the class drags on. But he's brilliant so it was a worthwhile class. We wrote 5 essays at home, there were 2 in class and 1 research paper. A couple of quizzes. Nothing too challenging.
Wonderful teacher. Very knowlegeable. Fair grader. attendance and participation are very important. Essays mostly 1000 words length, except the final research paper, usually about any Shakespeare's play in 1500 words length. Higly recommended!!
Great class!Accent was scary at first, but Dr.Barua made it interesting and was a motivating teacher.Already a capable writer,he pushed me to excel passed my comfort area. The topics were enlightened and he kept it social, fun, and light. If you put effort into your essays and participate in class(even if you answer wrong)he will appreciate it.
Class lectures are pretty boring. He is a tough grader but if you speak to him outside of class he will really help. I went to his office hours and let me redo a few essays and gave me some extra credit. As long as you speak with him he will help you. He's a bit intimidating at first but participate in class and he will be your best friend
I took him last semester and honestly if you just participate and show up to class you are good to go! He is a nice guy and good teacher. I recommend you take him!
This is my second semester taking a creating writing course with Dr. Barua. He always leaves helpful feedback on anything I turn in. He is a very soft-spoken person and delivers criticism gently. He will encourage you to write and turn in more than the minimum if you would like feedback on your writing.
I loved creative writing with Dr. Barua. He has the special knack for knowing a good story and what makes a good story. The class environment was so casual and comfortable I loved everyone in my class. He is not criticizing at all, but he does critique because he wants you to become a better writer. Take him for creative writing, won't regret it.
Dr. Barua is a very casual, laid-back kinda guy. He is not always clear at times, but will answer any questions you have to make sure you understand what you are supposed to be doing for his class. He also critiques your writing assignments in a way that isn't overly harsh but encourages you to be more creative and move out of your comfort zone.
Dr. Barua is a great English teacher. His lectures are somewhat boring, but they do help you out a lot on his essays. There are 5 essays, but he lets you skip one if you want. His essay prompts are straightforward, and he isn't a hard grader. Take this class, you wont be disappointed.
Prof. Barua is not a particularly high-energy professor, but his wealth of knowledge certainly makes up for it. As long as you can write well and keep up with the readings, you'll fare well in the class. I definitely recommend this class if you're really invested in learning the historical context of early American literature.
I am currently taking him for english 110 winter intersession. He is very nice, clear and informative. Buy the book and all you do in class is analyze short stories from the book. He is kind of old but is funny sometimes. This is only four weeks so he will assign you an essay and you have one day to do it. But is pretty simple. Take him!
I had Barua the semester before I transferred and it was an amazing way to leave Golden West. The syllabus is a wide range and every single selection is a good read! Barua himself is mostly pretty laid-back but he has his moments that are just hilarious. Enjoyable and totally doable. I'm at ucla now and I still apply what I learned from him here.
Loved this class! Challenging at times but really teaches you how to critically think and go beyond the surface. I highly recommend this class.
Very manageable class. He's very insightful and helps you develop your writing. Interesting stories and he gives a good analysis/promotes discussion amongst students. I suggest taking this class!
On the first week of class, sat eyes wide, mouth (most likely) open just in awe of what he was saying. My amazed facial expressions lasted throughout the whole semester as he explained every piece of material beautifully! You HAVE to read the material, and if you do, and participate, you will do great. He's an amazing teacher! Take him!
Great instructor, definitely recommended . awesome teacher.
An easy instructor. Does not make things complicated. Clear enough on the subject. definitely recommended.
This class has inspired me to pursue literature as a major. Professor's Barua's lectures were incredibly informative and eye opening. An object lesson in how to appreciate, enjoy, and teach literary works.
Barua is super chill. I would definitely take him again. Fairly easy grader, nothing too hard. 3 take-home essays and 1 in-class final. Show up to class everyday and you'll receive extra credit for outstanding attendance (which could boost your grade up to the next letter).
He's very chill, a fairly easy grader, very boring, attendance matters and will be used as extra credit to bump up your grade at the end. I got an A- without reading a single story (only online summaries), but I wouldn't recommend doing what I did. You learn leftwing concepts: feminism/patriarchy, gender, and critiquing European colonialism.
I took his course during the winter session. He's very nice. English is my weakness but he makes it convenient for me. I often come to his office to ask him to help me with my essay. He is always ready for that and gives good feedback. He also allows to revise essays and give extra credit opportunity, which are great offers to boost your grade.
Very passionate about his subjects. Difficult to hear, sit close if you have hearing problems or focus issues. Lectures are good, but often times very boring. No rubrics or grading guides -- just do your best and you will get a passing grade. Funny and nice, but lacks any structure to the class. Passes off discussions to students.
Great teacher as long you talk with him
Prof. Barua is an easy, chill professor. There are 6 take home essays & 2 in class essay tests. Although it seems like lots of papers, the prompts are really EASY as long as you take notes in class. He can also revises your paper within a few minutes and helps you succeed. No homework besides reading (optional) & essays. Final was easy. TAKE HIM
He is overall very laid back and unstructured. Prof Barua's expectations with essays are very unclear, however, he is very understanding and easy to talk to. Make sure to always come to class and to complete all your journal assignments.
he is an amazing prof and has a wealth of knowledge in regards to literature. A very understanding and kind professor as well. Take him and you won't regret it
Dibakar is by far the most in depth professor in English that I've ever had. Warning, there's a lot of essays you have to turn in, one almost every week around 900-1100 words each. There are also quizzes every other class on the readings but they're very short and easy. By far the best English110 professor on campus.
Very knowledgeable , understanding, willing to help, gives very good feed back, his lectures are very interesting, if you actually read, overall amazing professor!
He gives boring, long lectures that made me almost fall asleep a few times. He doesn't tell students in person about important assignments, like a 100 point essay. Not even a casual mention of it for a whole month. If you want your students to pass, ACTUALLY TELL THEM WHAT'S GOING ON! He is extremely vague and hardly engages with students. BEWARE.
Prof Barua is intelligent and humorous. I took 2 American literature classes with him and they were overall laid back and discussion heavy. Make sure to always attend class and do the three essays and you'll do great!
Took him for British Lit. off the bat the textbook was $$$ and it was required to have it physically in class, just finding the text free online wasn't going to cut it. He is monotone and gives dry lectures but he is clearly passionate about the subject, just requires extra focus. 3 essays (4-8pg), 2 journals (8pg), and attendance counts for a lot!
only had four grades in the class. Gave me a B - on EVERY essay without answering my questions on how to improve. For one of my essays, the reason I got knocked points was because apparently the prompt that was asking if you thought this poet's content showed spirituality of spiritual rejection had a "right" answer :/ He gave me my only B. Thanks.
So I took Professor Barua for Eng 100 then critical thinking. I had grown a lot spiritually in the time in between. This guy is so wise , like hes so woke . Literally I learned a lot about life from him
He is amazing, I took the 8 week summer course. But he provide lecture on the reading and if you take note, the quiz will be easy, I never read but had an A. He is always caring by reminding students about due date. If you asked for him to proof read your essay, he would provide amazing feedback. The only cons is his textbook is expensive.
Had Professor Dibakar online for 8 weeks and honestly was one of the most stressful periods of my life. He had no self-awareness of how busy his students were and this was shown by the number of essays we had to write every week with ridiculous requirements. The lectures were also very lengthy/boring and attendance is graded.
Took Professor Dibakar's 8 week course. Consisted of an absurd amount of essays all having to meet ludicrous requirements to get a decent grade, seemed as if he put no effort into grading, his comments on improvement were useless, his lectures were long and boring, and attendance is graded. Overall learnt nothing, get any other professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIS 8 WEEK COURSE! I have never been so depressed taking a class in my life. This guy put me through severe depression not even kidding. In the span of 8 weeks you'll do 3 essays with rigorous requirements. The last week of his class there is an essay due as long with a final. I've never felt this way in my life. I'm crashing out.
This professor made english unfavorable and it was one of my favorite subjects. His 8 week course is one of the worst classes I have ever done in my life. I do not think he has any awareness to the amount of work that he assigns and if he understands other students have other classes as well. It felt like a full time job.
I took his 8-week course, and some parts were challenging. He assigned three essays within that time, each with strict requirements. As long as you give yourself enough time to work on them, you should be fine. Aside from the essays, the class was easy in my opinion.
