The material is very boring but he is a nice guy and understands this. The first test was very hard but he listened to students suggestions of how to better prepare us for the test (as far as making the homework more similar to the test and changing his lectures) and changed the formatting of the second test to make it easier for the students.
What a joke of a class,I had to teach myself the entire class because Dieter is so incredibly boring, the class is not hard, it just requires memorization of some meaningless info. As I'm sure most students know the economics department is an absolute joke at KU and Dieter is no exception,Overall lectures are pointless and book is all that matters
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Avoid having him if at all possible. He doesn't teach you anything and just points at the slides with his little laser. If you need help the TA's were awesome though
This class wasn't the easiest, but it wasn't hard to get the hang of. The long answers on the test are easy to do with practice that he provides you. Dieter is very helpful and wants you to do well. The final wasn't cumulative. The class is usually curved but I ended up not even needing it and got an A anyway.
I could not stand this guy. I quit going after the first test because his class did not prepare me for the test at all. I found it easier to each myself the material than listen to him. If you have the opportunity take this class with another professor. All of the BE 301 classes have the same standard so other professors will not be any more diffic
The class itself is really boring. Dieter is also fairly boring (but if you're lucky you'll see him go off on a random tangent). Though the material was incredibly boring, Dieter gave good examples that were similar to test problems. Also, the class was heavily curved and he gave plenty of easy quizzes/hw to get points.
Very boring teacher. I did the crossword every day in his class and when I wasn't doing that my friends and I would tally and often make bets to how many times he says, "does that make sense?" I'm not good at econ and still managed to get an A. If you do the homework and study up for the tests, you should be fine.
dieter was super boring. i hate economics with a passion so i barely went to class. his quizzes are almost entirely all attendance quizzes so just give ur friends ur ku id and full name and ur set. his tests are moderately difficult. this class is a guaranteed B but if you put in more work, you could easily get an A.
If you go to class, listen, and fill in the blanks on the slides the homework and tests are pretty easy. Doing the above and no more would easily get you a B.
So obviously you're in the business school to be taking this class, Which means you know how econ is. Either, you get it, or you don't. Either way, Dieter is very helpful and amazing at explaining economic principles. His class is NOT hard. Don't let people who don't study ruin your chance of taking a class with an amazing, talented professor.
Dieter is great. His class is pretty straight forward. I did have to get coffee before class several times, but that was due to the boring nature of the subject matter, not Dieter. He has an accent which isn't too heavy, but takes a little getting used to. He's also pretty funny. Gives a lot of attendance quizzes to reward those who come to class.
Dieter is funny and intelligent (fairly young too). The course reviews some basic info so class can be boring until after the first test. The 3 tests are weighted so that your best one is worth the most (yay!). The homework is submitted online and I'd suggest doing it with a friend and getting help from the TAs as needed. All in all, a great class!
Deiter is a great teacher and very enthusiastic about the material. I'd take another class from him anyday. There are a lot of attendance quizzes so go to class. Tests are weighted in your favor and hw is online so there is no reason not to do well
Dieter is a cool guy but overall Managerial Economics was more difficult than I predicted. I got A's in Econ 142/144 and this class is a lot harder. His lectures are hard to follow and very boring.
I had a pretty good grasp on econ concepts going in and I think that carried me a long way, class is boring but he does a good job of trying to make it interesting, tests let you skip a few questions which helps a ton. Homework is online and if you attempt it once and take it to the TAs you'll get the answers. Nice guy and not a bad class overall.
AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!! Take it abroad in the CIMBA program. I hated this class so much I switched majors.
This class is uninteresting and hard to follow. I have an A in both Macro and Micro. Probably going to receive an F from this class. Not a hands-on teacher, just reads ppt's and gives miniscule examples. I'm going to try and take it at CIMBA as another person suggested.
Overall this was a very difficult class. I received an A in micro and macro and enjoyed those classes but not this one. Pay semi attention in class and read the book chapter for the homework and you should do well on it. The tests are harder to prepare for but review all the homeworks and reread the 3-4 chapters and you should be fine.
This is not a hard class. Dieter is a great speaker. Print out the slides and pay attention in class. Dieter gives all the HW answers as he lectures. Also the TA's will give you the HW answers after you attempt once. Redo the quant HW problems to study for exams.
Confusing unhelpful are terms I would use to describe this instructor. He basically reads straight from power points...AVOID IF POSSIBLE
Dieter tried to be funny but the truth is his lecture is boring. He just like a "robot" and his accent is terrible. Just get through him.
Cool guy, good lecturer, his tests seem easier than the notes, but aren't easy.
Get to know him. Don't let him chew gum while he is speaking and his accent isn't bad. I took this a couple years ago and have heard progressively better things as he gets more experience teaching the material. Overall it was fairly interesting but a lot of studying made my head spin sometimes. TAs are key to passing
Very cool guy, I enjoyed his lectures but it was key to sit in front. He engages a lot with students but it's difficult to get involved if in back. Class was tough, I feel like it was on the student to take on a bit of the learning, I didn't think I did well but got an A regardless. Make use of office hours. drop in and he'll walk u thru questions
If you want to have a good grade in this class is totally possible but you have to read the book after every class or you won't get it attendance quizzes so don't miss class
Dieter is a genius, no doubt. Also a good teacher. Only issue I have with his teaching is that he moves too fast. I wish he would spend more time to clarify info when he is teaching some of the tough-to-grasp concepts in this class, since FIN310 is known for being tough. This class broke my 4.0, and in my opinion is harder than DSCI202 with Mark.
Dieter is a smart guy, but he is not a very good teacher in my eyes. He moves way too fast and makes lots of assumptions about what you should already know about during this course. It was pointless to go to his lectures because I would end up needing to teach myself everything anyways, but he throws in quizzes that you won't want to miss.
Dieter is really smart but not a great teacher. It didn't help that I had his class at 8am and that he was a dull lecturer. But he would go too fast on the slides and there are not completed slides on Blackboard to catch up. You have to teach yourself by reading the book to pass. He also made some rude comments at students that irritated me.
310 requires a lot of academic maturity. If you're good at taking notes and studying effectively, take Schrader's class (he teaches in Spring). He's a great lecturer. He goes quickly because there's a lot of content, but if you listen carefully, there's a lot of useful stuff. If you're going to class to learn and not just pass, he's a great choice.
WOW this prof is so bad at teaching. If you take his class I would recommend reading the entire book before stepping into class on the first day. That way when he starts flying through the notes faster than a racecar you will have some idea of what is happening. He has NO skill in engaging with the class or how to explain his point in different way
Great professor with a lot of good information, real-world scenarios, and even the occasional reality check as needed. Just be sure to keep up with the readings, use the note guides he posts in blackboard and pay attention/follow along during class lectures. Study notes, book and review questions for the tests and passing shouldn' be a problem.
Dieter is a dull lecturer. He uses lots of big words and doesn't take time to explain things at a fundamental level. Don't fall behind. Take close notes and teach yourself the material. The exams are no joke! Understand every homework problem you are assigned. Opt to take another professor if someone else is available. Best of luck to you guys.
I Was warned that he was a hard prof but once I took his class I really enjoyed the way it was set up. It is a hard class and very test heavy but if you go to class and put in the effort outside of class then you'll succeed. Make sure to look at the chapter exam questions, most of the time those are test questions.
He is so terrible and mean! His class is so boring. Thanks to coronavirus! I can skip his lecture and study by myself. It's hard to get an A although I get one due to coronavirus. I got a C for the first exam. Exams are hard.
Professor Schrader is one of my favorite professors at KU. Students complain because he isn't an "easy A", but his class is extremely value-add. If you skip class, you will not do well. If you sit on your phone all hour, you will not do well. You get out what you put it. I will be enrolling in more Dieter Schrader classes in the near future!
Get ready to listen! Dieter knows how to lecture nonstop for 75 minutes. Don't interpret that poorly, he is an incredible teacher. Extremely knowledgeable and cares about his students. He is engaging and brought a lot of value to my education. I would recommend Dieter for future students!
I am so sad this semester went online due to COVID-19. His class was my absolute favorite. I looked forward to it every day. His financial knowledge is through the roof and he teaches in a way that is understood by everyone. Dieter tells the best stories and uses so many real world examples. I would 100% take this class with him, or any class!
I'll shoot you straight, this wasn't the easiest class in the world, but it is the most valuable. I have learned leaps and bounds of material from Professor Schrader. He was flexible and understanding during the Pandemic and moving online. He is one of those teachers that you are forever grateful for and never forget!
I was a frequent in Professor Schrader's office hours because Finance is just a whole different beast. I cannot wrap my brain around the concepts. But fear not, Dieter was so helpful and patient with me. He walked with me through the whole semester and I ended up getting an A-!!! He is funny, energetic, and very talkative! I definitely recommend
The class is lecture-heavy and he goes over everything SUPER quickly. There is hw every week & exams are pretty straightforward. It's important to go to the review sessions bc exam questions can be based on the sessions. Do not wait until the last minute to cram, it's very information-heavy! Super cool dude, he kind of rambles on to.
Mr. Schrader does not seem to care about his student's performance in this class. He speaks fast and lets you fill in information in his empty slides. On exams, he really tries to mess with you. You get the feeling that he is just trying to see how much he can screw you over. Stay away from this professor! Seriously take anybody else but him!
Don't take him. Take another professor. Class avg for the tests was 40 and 50
One of the hardest professors I have taken.
Please do not take this professor! He is the hardest and worst professor I've ever had.
class average was 40's/50's. Extremely difficult, tons of material.
PLEASE WHATEVER YOU DO DONT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS GUY. HE IS HORRIBLE AT TEACHING AND HIS NOTES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN READ BC OF HIS HANDWRITING. IF HES THE ONLY OPTION, TAKE A SUMMER CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE. TRUST ME
Class partially online, does not give sufficient material to take notes on and review outside of lecture. Review sheet is so vague, I bombed every test.
His teaching was okay, the overall concepts are pretty intuitive but he overexplains them. Lots of materials to study with: review sessions, homeworks, textbook, exam questions, office hours. There's a lot covered, but the concepts build off each other so it's not that much overall. Do the class work and some studying and you should be fine.
Professor was well-organized. Grades on a +/- scale, exams (3) worth 15% each, final 20% HW 10% project 10% quizzes (10) 15%. Offers 3% extra credit. Study slides/notes for basic understanding, other aids help solidify what was learned: review sheets for overview & calculations, HW and exam Qs for in depth and conceptual. Textbook helps if needed.
This class is extremely challenging for those who are not already knowledgable in finance. Dieter's lectures are very dry and he speaks like a robot. Make sure you take good notes because he doesn't save or record any of his lecture notes. The class averages on every test were in the 50% range so I know I'm not the only one who struggled.
IF YOU DON"T ENJOY FINANCE, FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR. THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE NO JOKE. BSAN IS EASY COMPARED TO THIS!
Alright. Here is the deal , this class is going to be hard if you dont know finance... which is a problem in a entry finance class. If you dont know the acronyms for something, you will be lost he will not explain. You will be lost. He wont help you know what is on the test. His test are nothing like the homework. I recommend a different prof.
This class was pretty tough and Prof. Schrader is unhelpful af. The average class grade for every single test was an F. This class literally gave me depression.
Take any other teacher. zero help and low-key mean if you email him. all the other teachers practically hand you an A. So if you dont know anything about exon take another teacher
For the most entry level finance class, this professor takes it too seriously and makes it 10 times more difficult than it should be. The actual material is not hard, but Schrader sucks at teaching and can't be bothered to try or change. Embarrassing KU won't do anything about it.
Dieter does little to help explain. this is supposed to be an intro class but if you dont have a heavy background of finance you will not pass. Exams are unlike any material he gives you. purposely makes exams almost impossible
does not appear to have any empathy for students.
Dieter is awful. He lectures for the entirety of class and you will just follow along in the slides. He includes a significant amount of blanks in his slides so if you're not in class, you will not know how to do it. Even if you are present, due to his elementary skilled handwriting, it's highly unlikely you will be able to read anything he writes
The class wasn't too hard, but the way Dieter teaches makes you understand even less, and makes the class harder for no reason. The tests are super hard for no reason, and most of them are full with content that wasn't reviewed in class. If you have to take Fin310, please find someone better.
BE301 with Dieter Schrader is a complicated subject. BE301 material on its own is pretty easy, but the way that Schrader teaches is a nightmare. He's the only professor out of the 3 professors that uses quizzes and exams. His lectures consist of him just reading off of slides for 75 minutes leaving no room for engagement, but he is very nice.
This Professor needs to learn to teach. His teaching of the material is useless because If I wanted to learn the information I would just read the slides which is exactly what he does during his lectures. In every class, there is always at least one person that falls asleep. DO NOT TAKE BE301 WITH DIETER.
Finance 310 with Dieter Schrader was the single-handed worst experience I had in business school. Not only was it extremely difficult to understand his lectures and read his handwriting, but whenever you try to talk to him he rushes through whatever you needed and doesn't bash an eye at you after that.
The class feels incredibly disorganized especially considering the number of TAs in this class. They can't even post the keys to the review sheets. It is also incredibly hard to understand/read dieters' writing. We had a TA do the lecture and I learned more from her in a rushed 50-minute class than I did any day with Dieter. No pedagogy skills.
Quite possibly the most charmless professor in the whole university. He talks fast, annotates his slides in cursive, and every PowerPoint he posts to canvas has parts deliberately taken out until he posts the complete version a couple days prior to the exam. Speaking of exams, there are three that make 65% of the grade. Best to avoid this one.
Dieter is a hard teacher but provides adequate material to study for the exam. If you put in effort in this class, then you will get the grade you want. He does have bad hand writing though so pay attention to what he says in class.
Dieter was not terrible at teaching, the content is just hard. My only issue is he gave no favors to make up for the fact. For our first exam half the class turned it in within the last minute and there was no curve given after and he simply made the test too long. There were in-class quizzes but they were randomly given.
Worst professor ever, the handwriting was bad that you couldnt even read what he's writing
He acts like we have base knowledge while this is an intro class. He also had really bad handwriting so when he writes lecture notes they are non legible. The tests are basically your entire grade, but you would never know because he hides your grade on canvas. The TAs will help you pass.
Is a tough professor but gives you all of the tools to succeed.
Dieter is a smart guy and knows what he's talking about, but having every class be an hour and 15 of going through powerpoint slides with his cursive was tiring. If you haven't taken an intro finance class b4 his, you might struggle with some of the content. Beware, a single exam will 360 no scope your grade for the semester if you don't do well.
This is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Dieter teaches like we're graduate students in finance when the course is supposed to be an intro to finance class. This is the first time I got a C in any class, I recommend any upcoming student to take this class in the summer or with a different professor.
Clear on what you need to do well in the class. If you do homework and study what he tells you to study you will do well in this class.
I give this class 5 big DOOMS!
He refuses to teach in any way other than annotating the slides. If you listen to the words he's saying you'll get by okay, but you definitely have to show up to class and lock in to try to retain anything. Exams are more difficult than those of other professors.
Dieter is the reason for my W on my transcript. The average score for the first exam was a 48%. His handwiritng is near illegible and even the TA's dont come back after one semester with him. Do yourself a favor, take the class with professor kelly
Just bombed the first exam. Teachers prays on students downfall. If u get him u are cooked
Insanely hard class. Dieter knows the material but teaches it as if you have 50 years of experience. There are no mock exams so it's really hard to prepare for exam. He makes all of his exams from scratch and are very very very difficult. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
This is the single absolute worst professor I have ever had in my life. He gives no guidance for exams and just tells you to review slides where his handwriting is worse than a preschoolers. Nobody finished the exam early and he made it as hard as possible. I genuinely think he loves to see his students fail he might have a kink for it. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Almost the entire class for the first exam didn't finish in time. His lectures are incredibly boring (75 minutes of powerpoint slides with awful handwriting), and the test was very difficult. He gives no study guide and seems like he just wants to see how many kids fail.
Absolutely terrible do not take this class with this professor. His handwriting is terrible and his slides are terribly written. He gives no study material and just tells you to read slides. His exam was made the absolute hardest he could make it and I think he enjoys seeing his students fail. SAVE YOURSELF
The single most difficult class I took at KU, not because of the content, but because of Dieter. This is an intro to finance course, but you will be instructed like you have worked in the field for 3 decades. No, he will not clarify concepts you have questions about. No, he will not prepare you for concepts that will be on the exam.
Don't take this class, he does not prepare you for the exams that make up 65% of your grade. No one finished the first exam early, and there were lines to turn in the test which tells you he sucks at teaching. He should absolutely not have a job.
Brutal tests and even more brutal lectures. Good luck trying to study. The slides give little to no explanations other than the hieroglyphics dieter scribbles on there. There are no study guides or helpful reviews to assist you in studying for the tests. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
He is the worst lecturer and terrible intro class professor. He gives no studying material besides telling you to review the slides (150 slides) with a bunch of notes literally wrong. If you want to do well you have to study more than any class you have had so far times 2. Unbelievable that he's the Professor of a mandatory class in business school
Gives impossible tests with barely any study materials to go with them. Tells us to review the slides to study for the tests. The slides are wrong half of the time and he writes like a child. I have no idea why they let this guy teach this class.
The lecture material is confusing as it is just annotating slides, it takes hours to understand what they're saying when studying. I just think this prof is way to advanced for an intro level class. We get some formulas for exams but then he won't tell us which ones will be tested that are not given which tends to be the bulk of the exams.
Worst class I have ever taken. His lectures suck and we go over material for one class that is confusing, and he expects you to be proficient in it for the test. Gives little study material (200 powerpoint slides). This is an intro class, and he expects you to understand everything immediately. Tests are very hard and almost nobody finishes in time
WISH I COULD GIVE A ZERO!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
hes kinda boring but chill asf
I guess he's not fired yet because he has all the internship connections for his TAs.. worst professor in business school
Horrible Professor. Makes the class feel like a upper level finance class and expects everyone to learn off of slides that dont help for exams, homeworks, and quizzes. Exams are 65% of overall grade and he makes the exams as hard as possible. Stay away from taking FIN310 with him if you can.
thumbs down
Take any other teacher available. Worst professor I have had at KU. Annotates all his slide decks-but no one can read his handwriting. Makes no sense and rambles on about nothing important to the class. HE expects you to already understand the whole class even though its intro. Run.
for those considering grad school or a career in finance I would highly recommend Schrader as the content in his fin 310 course is formatted in a way that would be very similar to higher level programs. if you want to learn fiance he's your guy, not to mention he runs Jeanette Finance Scholars. If that doesn't describe you beg for mercy.
Where do I begin, This man is awful and truly I tell you to NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He will lecture and just expect you to understand the concepts instead of teaching you how to do them. His exams are impossible and doesn't give you enough time. If you find yourself unfortunate enough to be in his class then make friends with a TA and pray.
Hard class, not a good teacher.
Bro isn't that bad. Just pay attention and lock in when doing homework.
Go to class and pay attention and you'll be perfectly fine
Dieter is tough but fare. I learned a ton. Dieter genuinely cares about his students. Be actively engaged and you'll do fine.
excellent teacher. I learned a ton!
I learned a lot!
Very bad handwriting. Get this man a personal handwriting tutor. He probably paid some people to give good ratings about his class today.
Dieter is obviously a very smart guy, but he is not a very good teacher. I think students would benefit in the class if it was formatted like accounting- having a book you have to buy and fill out as you go from unit to unit. Dieter only offers annotated slides, but his handwriting is not great so they are hard to reference.
Dieter is one of the best teachers I've had at KU. He is hard but fair and is willing to help students after class time.
Dieter is very energetic. He expects a lot from students. If you put in the time, the class is rewarding. If you are not willing to put in the honest time required, then you will hate this class. Dieter is very approachable.
Half of the class dropped out after the first exam. Dieter's explanations are poor and do not target the average student who is taking their first finance class ever. His teaching aids are awful. He annotates his slides every class but nobody can read his handwriting. Don't take this class.
Dieter's style of teaching is very hard to adapt to. It's not the normal lecturing style that you're used to with other professors. The class content contains very detailed and complex concepts in finance, and it doesn't help that his handwriting is not legible. There are no study guides for exams and 65% of your grade is exams. TA's are good help.
Avoid this professor if you can his handwriting is illegible and that of an elementary student. He gives us little to no study materials and tells us to just "read the slides" and dosen't even tell us how to study the slides properly. The TAs were much more easy to understand than Dieter.
Dieter is passionate about finance, but is also demanding of students. Keep on top of assignments and take the class seriously and you will do fine. I actually learned a lot.
Be prepared to spend twice the amount of time on this class.
This class is hard work; but it is helpful.
More work than most business classes.
do not take finance with this professor, his handwriting is horrible along with his lectures. i never understood his lectures, i would go to his TA's review sessions for help and it barely did. more than half the class would fail the exams and the only things that helped me was the past exams question not lectures. save yourself the stress.
Honestly not as bad as others say, but I'll agree on how bad his lectures and handwriting are; It was hard to understand him and I always felt stressed out during the lectures. If you put effort into studying/learning material for the exams outside of class you'll do well enough. :)
Dieter is demanding. But, if you are genuinely interested in Finance, Dieter is The Man. Dieter is passionate about Finance; and that is a perfect fit for students who maybe interested in Finance. The best thing I like about Dieter, he will give you a ton of personal time outside of class. If you're just a party-going B-School student, avoid him.
