I'm not an economics major so I was not expecting much but Dirk surprised me with passion for teaching and love of economics.
One of the best teachers I've had hands down. Dirk is very passionate about economics and makes the concepts easy to understand with relatable examples. Tests are easy just go to class (he also does participation points through small group activities throughout the class). Homeworks are easy because you basically have unlimited tries.
Dirk is G.O.A.T!!! I took econ in high school and barely passed. Took Dirk's econ class and I'm passing with a high B. The night before tests I sit down and read every chapter that was covered and I do well on the exams the next day. He relates econ with current issues and his lectures are interesting. Get him as your teacher
Very interesting guy. Class isn't that hard and there is about 2.5 percent worth of extra credit to raise your grade. Attendance is necessary for participation points.
Great professor, very clear and does fun demonstrations. Also lots of media examples which are nice. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give participation points and that helps your grade a lot. I just went to class, paid attention, and passed all my tests.
I am a science major and needed to take this as a prereq for grad school. Dirk was amazing and actually made this class quite fun (economics fun??). He's very clear and compassionate. His tests are very fair (sometimes easy) and writes the textbook used. If you need an economics course, Dirk is the way to go.
I had to take Econ as a required credit and I got lucky enrolling into Dirk's class. Dirk is energetic and clearly passionate about this subject. During lectures he incorporates movie clips, pop culture and current events which keeps subject matters relevant to students. The exams are fairly easy provided you read the text.
Dirk made me actually enjoy and want to learn about Econ.
Dirk is great, makes econ so interesting and his lectures are extremely fun.
i took Dirk's class for my Minor course. He has interesting lectures and stays upbeat throughout them. Tests can be tough, but he provides good study materials. Dirk has got to be the best public speaker I have ever heard, which makes his class a little more interesting. There is group work every class which counts towards your attendance.
Passed easily with a B. Didn't go to class often but going wasn't bad because he never fails to make his lectures entertaining and relatable. If you need to take econ for sure take him! Go to class and study before the tests and there is no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Dirk is literally the best educator I have ever come across after 15 years in the education system. He works to make each student feel important, which is impressive in a class of over 700 students. He keeps things entertaining while you learn a lot. Show up to class, study a little, and your good to go! I hated econ before, but now I love it.
The classes are interesting. Mateer really like ECON. Participant points include homework and class attendance so it is easy to get full points. Exams are really important. I am poor at exam so I got 79.5% overall. He finally gave me a C.
Obviously passionate about econ and teaches because he wants to. If you pay attention in class, you will do fine. And if you miss anything, his book is SUPER helpful and makes everything clear-cut. He generally uses the same examples in his book in class too, so it's easy to follow.
Amazing teacher! really passionate about economics and the lectures are always fun! only three exams and an optional final! Attendance isnt mandatory but go to class for participation points and read the chapters, they are helpful since he wrote the book! As long as you take notes, participate and go class you should get a good grade!
Dirk is such an incredible professor. I couldn't decide if I wanted to take him or Reff and am so glad I chose him. He makes his lectures interactive and somewhat entertaining. His tests are also fair and easy to get a decent grade on if you pay attention, look at the previous semesters test and go to his study sessions. He's awesome!
This class has got to be one of my favorite classes thus far. He's a motivational teacher, especially considering the large class size. He teaches out of the book, but going to class is fun and he hands out money for participation. Dirk is highly interactive and I highly recommend this class to ANYONE, regardless of major.
Take him!
Dirk is not only a great professor, but a great person. His lectures gets you excited about economics and I learned so much from him. I have never wanted to go to a class more than Dirks. If you have the chance to take a class with him as your professor I would highly recommend it. Thanks for a great semester Dirk.
He is a very good teacher with fun and interactive lectures. The class is not hard at all if you actually pay attention. Class isnt mandatory but he gives participation points every class which get added into your grade and can only help you. One of the easiest courses I have ever taken, def recommend
Dirk's lectures are clear, he posts helpful office hour videos, and he relates economics to relatable situations. His exams are straight forward and easy. Coming from someone who is not fond of business courses, Dirk's class was by far my favorite class I've taken at the university. He's passionate about the subject and it really shows.
Dirk is a great professor! I've had both Reff and Dirk and Dirk was so much better. Lectures were always fun. He's super passionate about the subject and makes sure his students have ample opportunity to get plenty of points to do well in the class.
I thought Dirk was a pretty good teacher for Econ. The thing that really helps is he gives you a practice exam before every test you take. This helps you understand how and what questions will be like. There are not a lot of points so you have to be on your game for everything. There are 3 exams and participation.
LOVE Dirk! Hes hands down the best professor I've had at the U of A and he clearly loves his job. He's there for his students, makes class interesting and actually makes Econ fun. I got a D in Econ 200 and an A in 200. Dirk made all the difference!
Awesome teacher! He really seems to care and makes learning econ so much fun. There are so many hands on activities that make the class great. Make sure to go to class though, participation is key! Tests aren't too bad if you spend time studying.
Dirk is the best teacher I have ever had. Period. Every class is made to be fun, and he is hilarious. Dirk explains concepts in simple ways and is an excellent communicator. I am really going to miss his class!
Dr. Mateer was by far the best professor I've had at the UA! He is extremely helpful and just wants everybody to succeed. He has fun activities in class that are relevant to the topics covered. He posts practice exams that are similar to the actual exam and you get 3 free questions. The class required a bit of work, but totally worth it.
GO TO THE EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS! Even if you never pay attention, if you go to the exam review session and study everything he tells you, you can get great grades on the tests. Very straightforward and easy to follow. Dirk keeps lectures interesting and fresh, relating economic terms to college student life. He is an exceptional TEACHER.
He is such a great teacher. He makes learning econ fun and entertaining. He does a lot of activities and interactive games in class. He only takes attendance occassionally. I didn't pay much attention in class but I read the book before each test and I did great! He wrote the book so it is extremely helpful! Take this class!
Taking class at 8a. Excited to be there because the professor is passionate.
He is the reason I changed my major to Economics. He is an incredible instructor who makes sure everyone understands the course well.
He is a great guy, easy class, and keeps the class reasonably entertaining.
Dirk (aka George) is an amazing professor, he makes a relatively difficult class easy to understand. His lectures are exciting and very informative, so don't miss them. His tests aren't unreasonably difficult but you will need to study. Three tests determine 90% of the grade (30% each) and the rest is easy class participation. Take his class!
Honestly, it was a fun, interactive class. I just don't get economics at all, but he helped with a bunch of examples and lectures were fun. He plays music at the beginning of each lecture. Online quizzes help a lot and are super easy to get 100%s. Tests are just like the exams he goes over from the previous semesters.
Econ 200 not always the most interesting subject but Matter makes the class interactive so it is not a chore to show up. Participation is part of the grade so I would recommend going but it is not a big deal to miss a few classes. Do the study guides and the homework and you should get an A in the class. Great professor!
Dirk is one of the best professors I have ever had. His Econ 200 course is straight forward and he is great at relating the material to everyday topics. Tests are based off lectures and HW. There are reviews for the exams and they are very helpful in preparing you for the tests. Class consists of 3 Exams , Online HW and Participation. Awesome Prof.
Amazing econ teacher, renewed my interest in the subject. In his econ 200 class, there's minimal homework, and when there is, it's short, easy, and even fun sometimes. He makes the subject interesting and knows how to grab your attention. Tests can be difficult, but you'll be fine as long as you study.
Definitely take Dirk if you can!! He is funny, very clear in his lectures, and comes up with all sorts of hands-on activities to help you learn the material. Tests are easy if you go to the review sessions, GET THERE EARLY BECAUSE THEY ARE PACKED! One of my favorite professors of all time.
Dirk is definitely one of the best public speakers I have ever seen. He teaches economics material very clearly and makes the class pretty easy. Just show up to every class and make sure you pay attention. Dirk is a very down to earth guy and make sure you go to the last class of the semester as it is the most inspirational lecture you'll ever see.
Dirk is an amazing teacher and very passionate about Economics! Definitely take this class.
Take this over Reff for sure if you're looking to get a better grade, but pick Reff if you want to learn more. this class is easier though. Class is out of 1000 points and tests are 90% and the rest is participation so you have to pretty much have to average like an 85-88 on the test. great teacher overall. hard to get an A but not impossible
Dirk is an amazing professor and always tries to make the lectures fun and clear, even though the class is long. Always do the online assignments and the think pair shares. The class is pretty big so if you need help, go to office hours. Also always try to go to the test reviews the night before exams, he's really helpful and goes over past exams.
your grade is made up of 3 tests and participation. Do the minimal work and you can get a "B" but work a little harder and you can get a "A". He loves what he teaches and makes and effort to make it fun and enjoyable for everyone. You do in class activities that will go towards participation.
Dirk was awesome and really made me think about how people make decisions when it comes to money. Go to his study sessions (not his TA's) and study hard for the tests cause they are 90% of the grade. Do the Inquizitives and make sure you seek help early in the semester if you do bad on first test. he rocks and enjoy the most entertaining class.
Super engaging and knowledgable. Easily my fav this semester!
Super engaging teacher, very interesting and makes the class and material easy to succeed at. The class has a lot of business majors in it, so people complain about it a lot. Participation is taken but easy to reach full points. Homework are so easy and he gives you a practice test before that is almost exactly the test. Definitely recommend.
Dirk is funny as hell and great at getting the information across in an understandable way (he did write the book after all). It's very obvious that he is a career professor who enjoys his job and I honestly wish he taught some higher-level classes to get him in a smaller environment. Definitely a must-take for anyone. Also, class is an easy A.
Dirk is great! TAKE THIS CLASS! If you show up you will pass! Getting an A in this class would not be that difficult. He gives participation, extra credit and his tests are not difficult if you study your notes and the old exam which he provides. His lectures are interesting and uses the students in his examples. Fun class!!
Wonderful! Entertaining! You will easily pass if you show up to class! Take this class!
Best professor I've ever had. Does everything he can to make everyone do well in the class.
You have to show up to get participation especially if you want a 100% in that portion, you can earn up to 110% in participation points. his test are super easy as long as you do the homework(which also counts towards participation) and study his pat exams he gives you access too. hands down would take again
Dirk has been my favorite professor at the U of A so far. He makes the course super interesting and there's always an incentive to go to class. If you go to class and do the homework which takes like fifteen minutes max you will do well. The book is also super helpful so I would recommend reading it. I hope to preceptor for him in the fall!
Dirk is always energetic and gives engaging lectures with fun activities. I enjoyed going to class.
This class is very easy. You do have to go to class for the first half of the semester to get participation but he makes the lectures fun. If you go to the review session for the tests you will do just fine. dirk is great!
I struggled with ECON 200 but I can't fault Dirk, he is great. ECON is not my major so be careful about the other reviews that say the course is easy. It was hard for me because of the pace.
Dirk was one of my favorite professors at the UofA. I'm not a business major, I'm taking business administration as a minor. Dirk managed to make economics very interesting to me and I got an A in the class. Used real world examples that really helped me to learn. If youre choosing between him and someone else, choose DIrk!
Dirk has been one of my favourite professors at U of A. I sincerely hope I will be able to take another one of his classes while I am here.
Mateer is such a light on this campus. He has so much joy while he teaches and truly cares about his students. He explains things in a way that make difficult concepts relate to real life, thus making them understandable. If you have a choice, I would 100% recommend Mateer.
His class can be hard. However, he does everything he can to get hundreds of students engaged to understand the material. The review sessions are great practice for exams.
I think 4.5 is a perfect rating. His class is full of great demonstrations, he's active and engaged, he sets up the class for you to get an A and understand the material, and he's good at conveying ideas. THAT SAID, you'll find that he's a bit political in unexpected ways. And if you get into the material, you may find out how oversimplified it is.
One of the best professors at UA hands down. I thought I HATED economics until I took this class. It's his easy to read textbook - Attend class! - Very entertaining! I am simply amazed at how much I know by simply doing what is suggested and going to class. Weekly, easy homework assignments. Dirk's Exam preps are top! Really cares!
Favorite class I took this semester. Dirk makes class fun and uses great examples so you understand concepts. He offers a lot of extra credit and is more than happy to help. Going to class while help your grade he doesn't care if you skip. Homework is once a week and real easy too. If I could take a class with him again I would.
This was by far my favorite class this semester! I had an 8am class and looked forward to going (this says a lot). The professor made it really fun!! He would give out candy and even money just for people who would participate! We watched short videos from tv shows like family guy or south park. It was a very inactive class with made it fun!
Dirk is one of my favorite professors at the U of A! He makes an 8am very enjoyable and he really makes Econ interesting! He is a super cool, energetic guy and is really smart. His tests are difficult but as long as you follow the study guides and study for at least half an hour, you'll get a good grade!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I'm studying vet science and I was required to take this course to complete my major. I unexpectedly gained a love for ECON and have learned so much in just 5 months. His lectures are fun and engaging. You will find yourself excited to go to class.
This was one of the easiest A's I have ever gotten. His way of teaching is amazing and he manages to make economics fun. Dirk is probably the best professor I've ever had.
Dirk is my favorite teacher I've had at the U of A!! He makes Econ so much more interesting than other Econ classes I've taken here before. This class is an easy A if you study for the exams and take notes in class. There is homework only once a week and it's super easy. Highly recommend this class and Dirk as a professor!!
Dirk is phenomenal at giving lectures. He will keep you engaged. He's also a great guy. Expect to read the textbook because his homework questions and exam questions are practically straight from the textbook. He wrote it. The class was simple and an easy A.
LOVE Dirk!! Easily one of my most favorite professors at the U of A! He makes every lecture so engaging and motivational! TAKE THIS CLASS!!! DO read the textbook, you're guaranteed an A if you do! (Plus he wrote it himself, its pretty interesting and easy to read!) Good Luck!
Great guy! Clearly knows his stuff! Study for the exams definitely! You don't have to go to class, he has other ways of receiving participation. You don't necessarily need to buy the book but it's helpful. He sets up two review sessions before each exam so you should be fine.
Dirk is an excellent public speaker. He keeps the class engaged and motivated, and I was surprised to find that it was actually fun. He uses a lot of activities and examples to showcase concepts, and there are so many opportunities in the class that it's really not hard to get an A.
One of the BEST teachers you will have at the U of A. He does lots of fun, interactive demonstrations that make you understand econ in clear, visual ways. He is passionate about his job, and has a great personality. If there was a 'grammys' for teachers, Dirk would win Teacher of The Year. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Professor Mateer's class is pretty simple and it's easy to achieve 100 percent participation. You either can come to class and participate, online homework, or extra credit he gives out randomly in lecture! The best way to study for his exams is to study old exam questions which he gives out.
Dirk is probably one of the best teacher's I've ever had. He's engaging and inspires a ton of interest into economics. If you get the chance to talk to him he's a wonderful person to talk to. He's got an interesting life and he's always happy to talk.
Dirk is a fantastic professor. He makes economics extremely relatable, and made an 8 am class not horrible to come to. If you need a gen ed, I strongly recommend you taking a class by this professor.
Dirk is one of the best lecturers i've ever had and without a doubt made ECON200 worth-while and fun. His lectures are funny and he often shows hilarious videos, making this 8am not bad. His tests aren't too difficult and he gives you 3 skips, so this class is not the hardest to pass either. Take Dirk!!
ECON200 is super easy, Dirk made it so much fun. Lots of participation points available, and he gives out money during some lectures, SO GO. There are many ways to earn participation points so don't worry if you miss class, just make sure you get the notes. Overall such a great class!
Dirk is by far one of the best professors at UA. Class is easy but BEWARE do go to class because of participation points and to get an A, you'll need the material, especially towards the end of the semester. But most classes are quite a show with this examples of every day economics.
This class was not easy. I've heard better things about the other Econ teacher than him. He will not give you a real study guide for the tests and just expects you to know every part of his book. If you do not take thorough notes during class and read his whole book then you will not get an A. He's nice but hard. I had to work too hard for an A.
There's no reason why you shouldn't get anything less than a B in this class. It is an easy A if you go to class regularly, take notes & try on some of the homeworks. He is really passionate about Econ & makes it easy to get the grade that you want. He tries his best to make lectures fun (especially at 8 am). One of the best professors here at UA!!
Dirk is amazing! He's funny, inspirational, and he does an amazing job with connecting economics with your everyday life.
Would have been an econ major if I took the class in an earlier year.
Dirk is AMAZING! and super funny. The class is huge so prepare yourself buuut there 3 exams. There is homework which is worth $150,000 (he makes his class out of $1,000,000). Participations which is attendance is worth $100,000-$110,000. You can miss so many classes and still get the full points. (I suggest not missing class though). Very easy!
This class is super easy, just show up to class and study off old exam and you will be fine.
Probably one of the easiest classes i have taken at the UA. He also offers ton of extra credit opportunities! I have an A right now and take the final on Monday!
he offers a lot of extra credit (do it), but the class is based off three tests so if you're not good at test taking try a different class if you can. First two tests weren't bad but the final screwed people and wasn't like the practice exam at all! goes super fast. You don't have to show up to class but I suggest you do or you will miss a lot.
This class is a hard class, however, the teacher does an amazing job at teaching and laying out the information. Even in a class filled with hundreds of students, he still manages to be captivating beyond belief!
Dirk is a great teacher and his class has inspired me to take an even greater interest in Economics.
Dirk's Econ200 is so much fun. He makes the information applicable and accessible. The test reviews are exactly like the tests, so take advantage. You are graded on very few things with exams being the bulk of the grade.
One of my fav professors at the UofA! I didn't think that I would enjoy ECON but Dirk is entertaining and makes the material easy to understand. The course is test heavy but there are many opportunities for extra credit and participation points. Take this class!!
Love the professor and the course. He gives anyone who volunteers at his lectures money or food. I have over a 100% right now. Easy A.
Loved taking Econ 200 with Dirk Mateer! He is such a fun, passionate teacher and he makes class so interesting. Econ could be very boring but Mr. Mateer makes it so easy to enjoy class. Not much work at all, the only homework we have is online it's pretty much an Econ game and you can keep trying until you get 100%, easy class!
Mateer has been one of the best professors I have had. He is so passionate about the subject and he sparks that in his students. He engages the class through fun activities and makes sure you understand the material. Quite a bit of reading, but the textbook and assignments are interesting.
The best econ professor ever!! he's amazing, his lectures are clear and straight forward. I was absent like 8+ times and I still received an A.
Dirk is the best prof I have ever had. He would take volunteers and use them in really fun demonstrations that would actually explain the lecture material very well and made the lectures fun and engaging. Volunteers would get money, candy, snacks from the demonstration. He is a great professor that makes economics super fun. Definitely take him!
Dirk is a real gemhe is clearly passionate about Econ and makes his lectures super engaging and fun. I missed class pretty often towards the end of the semester and actually felt bad about it because he's such a great guy. If you attend lecture/read the textbook/do the test reviews you'll get an A.
I was nervous to take this class because I went in knowing nothing about Econ but Dirk made everything easy. I would recommend going to class at first to get the participation points but he grades on a money scale so don't get scared of the percentages on D2L. His tests are easy if you read the book, do the hw, and study past tests.
BEST TEACHER EVER
Dirk Mateer is an amazing Econ teacher. Funny, easy to understand and grasp concepts he uses. His study guide is quite similar to the tests, so make sure and utilize those study guides and you should have an A by the end of the semester. Also you should show up to class he gives a lot of easy extra credit for essentially just showing up!
I cannot say enough good things about Mr. Mateer. He really loves his job and it shows by his spectacular lectures. I knew I wanted to write this perfect rating since the very first time I sat in his class. Tbh, he is the best professor I ever had at UA. I absolutely despise math but he made it easy to understand in real world examples!
Even though I pretty much had no ECON experience prior to this course, Dirk made this class really fun to go to with all the participation activities and video clips. Homework was pretty easy since you can work until getting 100 %, and exams should not be difficult to get a decent grade on if your background is in ECON or business related things.
Dirk is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes his lectures super interactive and engaging. He also hands out money ALL the time! Win a Kahoot and get $15. Does reviews for exams, posts example questions (about 100), does everything for you to succeed. Just a lot of information because the class is micro and macroecon combined.
Dirk is an amazing teacher. Best ECON class at UArizona.
Dirk is one of the best professors I have ever had. You will want to show up to class theres always prizes, hes extremely helpful, and truly wants everyone to succeed. He truly makes the class AMAZING whether you like ECON or not.
He really cares about his students' success and tries his hardest to make his lectures as entertaining as possible despite the somewhat bland subject matter. Definitely worth taking his class as you will always be entertained and it will never get too hard. Lots of extra credit opportunities too.
Took Econ200 with no knowledge on economics and succeeded in this course. Mateer is by far the best professor I have had at U of A. He provides very clear what to study for exams and gives sample questions from previous exams that are almost identical to the test.
love this man, great professor who really cares about his students! 100% would take course again with him !! My friends in other courses would come to his reviews becuase he is a fabulous teacher!
Mateer tries to keep up with today's media and makes the class very entertaining and fun. There is a lot of participation every day and Kahoots too. The study guides for the exams are almost exactly like the exam which is very nice. He's a fun and easy teacher!
Dirk is honestly such an amazing professor. His lectures are always very fun and intriguing. The class is pretty hard but just pay attention and study a bit for exams and you should be fine. Attendance is not mandatory but there are participation points pretty much every class. 11/10 would recommend.
Great class, but you have to really pay attention in class to learn anything. He's super interactive in his lectures and you'll be playing games and watching tv clips. He likes to teach with real life examples.
Undoubtedly, one of the best professors at the University of Arizona! If you are an Eller student who is required to take ECON 200, take it with Dirk without any doubt. Even if you are not an Eller student and looking for a great GenEd that is helpful, easy, and satisfies Tier 2: Individuals & Societies, ECON 200 is the right fit for you.
Dirk is the man! Attendance is optional but he makes his lectures very entertaining and participation is a part of the grade. Best econ teacher!
Big class. Pretty straight-forward material. Overall well-organized
This was by far my greatest class experience and would 1000% recommend. The lectures are hilarious and the material is enlightening and doesn't feel like it's a tedious task.
awesome teacher would take class again.
One of the best professors Ive had!!! It was a giant lecture hall but he allowed it to feel small as he tried to connect with as many students as he could. All lectures were very fun and there were usually games involved that made class go by really fast. Participation is a big part of the grade so make sure you show up and go through the material
I loved professor Mateer! His lectures were captivating and fun to take part in. Econ 200 is not super hard, but it's not an easy A. The grading method he uses is very clear so it's easy to know what you need on tests to get a certain letter grade in the class. He was one of my favorite professors for freshman year.
I took this course last semester with a different professor and obviously it didn't go too great. Retook it with Prof. Mateer and now i genuinely understand every concept. Econ has gone from my worst class to among my best thanks to him!
Dirk Mateer is an AMAZING professor. His class consists of 3 exams, inquisitives (weekly online quizzes), and participation (in-class kahoot). He has tons of energy during his lectures, which makes it easy to stay engaged. Also, he does activities with volunteers a lot! I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a fun economics class.
Professor Mateer is just great. His lectures are very interesting and relevant, and he does a great job at keeping your attention through videos and current pop culture examples. Fun class. Not that hard as long as you attend lecture and take good notes
Mateer is the best professor I've ever had. I showed up at the lecture on the first day and didn't know what to expect. He is extremely engaged with his students, gives the most creative and fun lectures, and is an amazing human. I wish I could take every course with him! The class is fun, homework is easy, and exams are exactly what he teaches.
He is the best ECON 200 professor you can get.
Favorite teacher at U of A. Truly passionate about teaching econ and truly cares about his students. Teaches in a fun way and gets the class excited. Homework is easy. Tests are exactly like the study guides. Great all around course and give this teacher a raise!
Really good ECON teacher. He goes out of his way to make the subject easier to understand and fun. Go to all of his lectures, what he lectures about is on the test. I loved going to his class each week. The content is about subjects that are important to everyone. Online work but not hard. I would take it again if I could.
Professor Mateer made ECON200 incredibly easy to understand. I highly recommend you take his class since it will definitely help you further down the road. The only downside is that because so many people choose to take his class you better get to lecture 15 min early if you want a seat instead of sitting on the floor.
He is by far one of the best professors at UofA. He is extremely passionate about teaching and it shows. There was not a single lecture I didn't enjoy. I wish I could take more classes with him. His teaching methods are impressive, even thought his lectures consist of hundreds of people he manages to teach, keep everyone's attention and have fun.
Great professor! Makes the class super interesting!
Dr. Mateer lines out the entire semester in the syllabus. There aren't any surprised in terms of assignments. His lectures are very interactive, and you are expected to actively learn in class. However, the content in lecture doesn't always align with content in lecture, so you have to be on top of the reading. It's easy, just requires discipline
there are a lot more participation points available than you need, so you don't really need to go to class all the time. he has a lot of good information in lecture that can be helpful for exams. exams are very similar to the study guide that he gives out and you get to skip questions. if you put in the slightest effort, it isn't hard to get an a
This class was one of my favorite this Spring. It was the only one I wanted to go to and he made lectures interesting. Although you do have to show up to class to get participation credit, he offers many hints about the exam and even extra credit. I would take him again in person if given the chance.
professor matter make econ fun! he provided countless resources to his students and constantly sought to explain economics in a way that students could resonate with
Dirk is a great professor. he can get everyone in +300 class involved and has really fun ways for the students to understand the material. Inquizitive is great for homework. He does grade participation as kahoot so go to class often. if you do the homework and attend, test will be really easy. I didn't even study for my first exam and i got a 79%.
Came into the class thinking it would be a dry intro class, turned out to be one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. Great professor with some of the most entertaining and engaging lectures. Assignments aren't tough and he provides more than enough information for you to be successful. Assignments and tests are extremely fair. Take this class
Dirk Mateer was a great professor. The lectures always engaged the students with ways to participate and gain points. Exam material was clear on what to study. There is one weekly assignment to complete and this helps your understanding of the material. Class was always interesting and exciting. I recommend taking this class.
Professor Mateer makes lecture fun and interactive. He does a demonstration almost every single class and often gives away candy & prizes. I once won $10. If you keep up with lecture and do the easy weekly homework, you will be successful! Take Econ 200 with Dirk Mateer!
Professor Mateer will no doubt end up being one of the best professors I've ever had. He explains things so well, his lectures are the best part of the course. Exams are extremely straightforward, and he provides extremely helpful study guides. Getting a good grade is possible for every student. He's a great professor and great person!
I'm a STEM major so I hated having to take ECON for my major. A lot of people love Dirk for making the class fun but I think he tries a little too hard and strays away from the material. His exams are sometimes detail orientated but aren't that difficult. If you're not in business the class setting and other students will probably annoy you.
This class may have been a good class in-person, but he made himself and TAs completely inaccessible to students online. He offers no office hours other than messaging the TAs via Zoom during class. We are expected to teach ourselves all material and come to lecture with questions. Expect to spend a min of 7 hours per week to pass.
While Professor Mateers in-person class is undoubtedly praised, his online teaching strategies are substandard and have resulted in the majority of the class struggling immensely. He offers no office hours, and only attends class for one session a week. He expects students to complete all work outside of class, and come to class with questions.
The previous reviews about Mateer's online teaching methods are not wrong. He claims to teach a flipped classroom, but grossly underestimated the help and resources that students would need when learning economics entirely on their own. Be prepared to read the entire textbook and receive minimal support from the professor. Exams are difficult.
This professor CANNOT teach using a virtual platform. Who thought it was a good idea to have a flipped classroom for a class that regularly has 400 students? This teacher continuously urges students to drop when asking for help.
Might have been a good in-person professor, but does not understand how to structure a flipped classroom or online course. No office hours, barely any interaction with professor, and difficult exams. Be prepared to put in 10 hours a week.
I can't speak on his in-person class, but I agree with my peers in stating that his virtual teaching methods are horrible. He's not accessible outside of class, other than replying to emails and advising students to drop his class. The majority of the class did very poorly on the first exam.
It's not possible to give teachers a rating of 0, but if I could I would. His virtual flipped classroom is a disaster. The class's performance shows this. All work is expected to be completed outside of class. Very minimal interaction with the professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIS VIRTUAL CLASS! Professor Mateer does not know how to manage a flipped classroom! With over 400 students regularly taking the class, this is simply unmanageable. He only comes to one class session a week and provides kids with no extra help.
Wow, never encountered such an uncaring and insensitive professor. Literally sent a message to our class telling us to drop because our opportunity cost of staying in his ill-structured flipped classroom is too high. Be ready to read the entire ebook on your own, teach the powerpoint lectures to yourself, and have an uninvolved instructor.
His virtual class is horribly structured. So many students did poorly on the first exam that he applied a bell curve that brought the average into the 70s. Anyone who received above an 80 retained their initial grades, as this teacher only wants students to pass and not to succeed. Get ready to teach yourself all material on your own.
I took Dirk's class based off of the reviews from his in person teaching, I had very high expectations. However, with classes being solely online he is no help what so ever. I have been teaching myself economics all semester, and I am not a business major. Crazy amount of readings and the tests are so hard. I wish I could give a 0.
Don't let older ratings fool you. Just look at the recent ones; I will add to them. I am a 4.0 student, this class will likely break that, and yeah it's Econ 200, supposed to be easy I know. He curves on a bell, that means he gives the bad students an added 5-15 percent bump and leaves those who scored over 80. TAs useless, test Qs misleading.
Like my of my peers I took this course based on the many positive reviews on his in-person course. However, his online format is the worse I've encountered. He does not hold lectures, not even pre-recorded lectures. You basically have to teach yourself the material based on his textbook. This class is exam heavy, be prepared to invest a lot of time
Like many of my peers I took this class based off the reviews of his in person lectures which have great reviews. Sadly his online course is a complete 180 and he provides 0 help to the class. His exams are the hardest I have taken since arriving to Arizona and he offers 0 help sections to review for them. Please don't take this class.
Does not teach class at all and then blames students for not knowing the material. zoom recitations are done by a TA who doesn't seem to know econ. Both TA and Dirk put in 0 effort at all. If you have him, switch.
Very inconsiderate during the pandemic. Do not take this course online; everything is self taught with little guidance. I am a 4.0 student and this class has ruined my GPA.
This class is extremely difficult and the way it is run doesn't work. You are basically left to learn content on your own. Tests (worth 75% of grade) will be very difficult no matter how much you study. He said he is using harder questions, and there is not enough time to take the tests. If this class is not a requirement for you, do not take it.
I was super excited to take ECON200 with Dirk after reading all the amazing reviews he had pre-covid, but his flipped online course is the worst. He doesn't teach anything and expects you to learn it on your own. Exams were open note and open book but still made it difficult for everyone. Don't take this course if it isn't required.
Dirk is doing exactly what we signed up for. He and his TA help on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've attended those sessions and Dirk is very knowledgeable and personal. Others who have posted are mad because they thought the course would be easy.
I am not one to complain usually, but I have tried so hard to give this prof the benefit of the doubt during times of COVID. However, he has had a very disrespectful attitude towards students, and even told us to drop his course if we did bad on a test. All the teaching is done by yourself and by reading the book.
Never use rate my professor but felt I should for Dirk. Absolute gem of a teacher, uses great examples from TV shows and real life scenarios to dive in depth regarding economic principles. Really great at making Econ less daunting, and explanations are clear and to the point.
The online class he teaches is not easy but Im learning a lot and feel prepared to take the next ECON class.
I'm super disappointed with this class. I heard so many good things about Dirk but his online class was a disaster. He wasn't even there to teach it. PowerPoint slides and homework every week with no sort of recorded lectures made understanding the material impossible. He had to curve both tests so far over 15% because everyone was failing.
Get ready to teach yourself economics! even if you attend the online zooom, you are still going to teach yourself economics! I took his class because of other great reviews, but personally, a terrible professor (online)! If you can take him in-person, please do! The mental breaks downs and anxiety is so NOT worth it & he gives terrible feedback too
Everyone told me to take dirks class but this semester was the worst. He is easily the worst professor I have ever had. I took AP macro in high school and that is the only reason I did well. He did nothing to help us, only held optional review sessions where he played animal crossing the whole time, and never responded to his own emails.
Made it more than clear he does not care because he's retiring. Expected you to read his PowerPoint with barely any words. No actual lecture just optional Q&A on Tuesday and Thursday when actual class was supposed to happen. Got mad at his students for low exam averages but still didn't do anything to help.
I was told by my peers to take Mateer's course; I regret this decision. The lecture format, which basically was power points with little instruction, were sub-par. As mentioned in other reviews from this past semester, Dirk Mateer did email all of us, saying that he highly suggests that we drop the class as "the opportunity cost is too high."
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Yes this is Econ and should be hard, but he didnt teach at all. You have to teach yourself the entire class, he will not curve at all, and is extremely rude for no reason. Have some decency please especially during covid. He assumes we all understand Econ already and Doesnt have personal office hours.
His teaching skills are average. Not the best at explaining concepts. My serious problem though is his use of propaganda in his class. It is not at all difficult to tell what he believes and that he thinks that he should teach his students that when in reality a lot of it is just what I said it is: propaganda. Just don't believe everything he says.
If you listen to his classes its an easy w. but if dont listen to lectures and like to learn on you own the tests might be difficult
Dirk was born to be a lecturer. He instills his passion for economics in his lectures and makes a boring subject fun. The best professor I have had in my life.
