He teaches a great Modern World class. He is German, and when it comes to the European History, I doubt you will find a more knowledgable professor. He is very funny, but also very demanding. If you are serious about your education take his class.
he was not by any means an easy teacher. He was very passionate and enthusiastic. This course was a heavy work load!!
Dirk's class requires a lot of work.. but his teaching makes it worth it. If you're into history, this is the class for you
He is a hard professor and assigns alot of reading but he is very good at explaining history. I would take another course from him.
Since he is from Germany, he brings his European history classes to life. He makes his classes interesting. I would recommend him to those that like history.
fast pace, tons of work, but he takes what he does seriously. Take this class only if you really need it.
Dirk is AWESOME. Very tough, but knows a lot of work. Expect a 'B' if yhou work hard but wow is it ever worth it. A must take. Projects, daily tests and presentations included.
LOVE HIM HES FUNNY TOO
Dirk is so fun. There is a lot of reading and the possibility of a quiz every day on the reading. If you love history like I do, his Early Modern Europe and Modern World classes are a must.
This is the second time I have taken his class and as long as you do the reading, along with showing up to class and the other work, you are pretty much getting a B.
Dirky was cool. I was kind of skeptical at first having a teacher from Germany teaching a subject such as American History, but his sense of humor seemed to get me through.
Dirk is my boy. He is kind of a creeper, but still awesome in his own awkward foriegn kind of way. His class has some work, but its not to hard. the highest grade he will give you for good quality work is a 90 (so a 90 is like a 100) which sucks because once you get one grade below a 90 you will not be able to get an A.

Hilarious and smart. He makes history fascinating and tells you what the glossed-over history books from high school don't.
I'm in the process of taking this class right now but I've got to say, Dirks the man! He's probablly the funniest teacher I've had and he not only knows what he's talking about but he finds a way to make it really interesting. I'll be taking another class with him next year for sure.
Dirk is all lecture all class. He doesn't have a text book but you will read chapters out of novels instead. Theres no test, its all papers, debates, and in class essays. He's funny and tells you what you never knew about history like who was a homosexual and who cheated on their wife.
its refreshing to meet a teacher whos actually a real person. even if they are slightly creepy. youll get an a or b if you try. and i think you will. kill your television.
I have taken 2 of his classes already and even thought I am NOT A MORNING PERSON, I just signed up for one of his classes that starts at 7:00 (AM!) He makes all the people in history seem real, like you might have been their friend in another life or something, gives you the info you really want (peoples sex lives/if they were super ugly etc.)
Dirk is so hot and that is really the only reason i went to class, just not a history kind of girl.

his class was fun. very interesting.
Attractive. Very nice. willing to meet with students if they need extra help. makes class fun to attend.
He's pretty cool and funny. He made me learn more about america than I ever imagined. He's a very good teacher. Just remember to write papers instead of taking tests if he gives you the choice.
this guy seems alright, but his class is so unbelievably boring that i almost can't sit through it. he has not been helpful the few times i have gone to him for help, and he DEFINITELY has favorites in the class that will get the best grades NO MATTER WHAT. also requires group work, which is ridiculous.
Really nice guy, just an ok professor. He's disorganized so going by the syllabus isn't very helpful. He's easily distracted and tends to have a hard time focusing on the lecture. His tests are insanely hard but you have the option of writing a paper instead. He knows his stuff, he's just not focused or organized enough to teach it well.
if you're not into groupwork or writing papers i suggest you look elsewhere for a history teacher. his lectures are so freaking boring and his tests are pretty hard. i guess if you're really into history you'll get it, but you really need to read the books he assigns to get a good grade. not into reading about history? don't take his class.
Dirk is a great teacher, exciting and interesting. He may be German, but one heck of an American History Prof!
Dirky is the best! He is one of the most interesting professors I have EVER had, so he makes me want to come to class. His tests questions tend to be a little more complex than you might imagine, so studying is a must. Every class or so he arbitrarily picks somebody to take a quick oral quiz, so be prepared! Overall, a great prof and friend.
Dirk is very funny, extremely knowledgable and because he is from Germany he has a totally different perspective than you will find with most American teachers. The best thing about his class is the material he has you read, some classics and some recent books. He also holds debates between two different teams every week. You walk away with alot
Dirk is by far the best professor I've ever had! He really cares about history and he is hilarious!! There are alot of books assigned, but all you really need is the main idea of each chapter. Focus on WHY each historical event happened (and how to keep it from happening again)and you'll do great. (I've literally taken every course he offers!)

Good teacher.
BEST PROF EVER!!
Great Prof, made it fun and interesting, easy to learn. make sure you go to class, 95-100% of test material is from his lectures!
Easy class. The Christian overtone was a bit too heavy, but I think he was ultimately being tongue-in-cheek about it.
Best history teacher I've had my entire educational career. He knows history is boring, and he is the best at keeping your attention with funny stories and goofy anecdotes. Just be prepared to read a lot of books very quickly.
Dirk Voss was the most influential history professor I have ever had. Not only did he keep the ENTIRE class engaged throughout his lectures, but he gave us a desire to speak up and answer questions. His comedic timing was brilliant and his book choices were thoughtful, yet challenging. Make sure to listen to his anecdotes!
Best teacher I've ever. He makes it relevant and interesting. The tests were easy as long as you came to class and remembered to jot down the notes to whatever topic he was teaching. Also nice that he teaches from a more worldly perspective, not with an American bias. Sorry it had to end, I really enjoyed it.
Took his class MWF for american history 2 and thought he was one of the best teachers and made me want to be a history teacher. He gives 4 tests and one final to make up your lowest test grade. His books are interesting and you wont pass unless you try, listen to his lectures and take good notes. I wish I could take every class with him
Very smart. A true intellect. Teaches in Socratic way. Absolutely passionate, and every utterance is imbued with a depth of importance and a clear relevance. Take his class! Life changing!
He was an okay teacher but cool person. He was smart and knew what he talking about but didn't really teach it. He just lectured the whole time, assigned us to read the textbooks on our own time and expected us to explain the main idea of each chapter. Only take a class from him if you have to and be ready to work very hard if you do. He's tough.
He's super funny and nice. Sometimes lectures are interesting. A TON of reading. He knows what he is talking about for sure. For someone who knows nothing about history he is not clear at all. He grades pretty easily, so you can still do well. Lectures aren't clear. He would be a great teacher if you have an interest in history.
Wish I could take every class with him, has kept in contact with me to get me in scholarships, truly cares about his students. Published author and very smart and entertaining. Hard to stop and write notes because I dont want to miss a word he says, learned so much from him about our economy and us history.. you will never get bored in his class!
Dr. Voss is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He requires a lot of reading and its not always clear what he expects, but he is very approachable for clarification. Knows history like the back of his hand and is a masterful lecturer. He is funny and even if you generally hate history, you will definately like his style. Take his class!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Incredibly entertaining lectures. He can be offensive sometimes, he likes to push students out of their comfort zones, which is awesome. On the down side he is extremely disorganized and his tests don't make any sense, but it doesn't matter because he gives so much extra credit you can easily get an A.
Didn't like him at all. He didn't teach the material well, I basically taught myself. You don't have to go to class, it's pretty pointless because he doesn't teach. And his tests make literally no sense. One of my worst teachers so far.
Dr. Voss is probably the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are never dull, and if you keep up with the reading you'll do well. There is a ton of required reading, but it is interesting and goes well with the lectures. He is very helpful and approachable if you need assistance. This prof knows history!Take his class!
Interesting person, terrible teacher. Amount of reading material assigned was ridiculous! also taking notes on his lectures was impossible because he would go off on rants. This made it impossible to study for tests. Retaking this class with different teacher to get appropriate grade.
Very interesting teacher. I usually don't learn well from lectures but he always seemed to keep my attention within the class.-never studied once.
Great professor, highly recommend. Pay attention, take notes and you'll be fine. I put minimal effort in and did fine, he drops your lowest test grade and often gives you the choice on tests whether to do more multiple choice or write an essay. How could it be easier? Excellent professor, cool to get a insider's perspective on European History
Dr. Voss' lectures helped influence me to become a history major. If you like history, this is a professor who'll give you more than just the standard "A led to B led to C" stories. If you don't like history, he's still really entertaining--and you won't have to do as much work as you would for an average class. Awesome professor.
Great guy really helpful and not a traditional history class.
Dr. Voss, honestly, is the best professor I've had. I've moved on to a large, four year school and their best history professor isn't nearly as good a lecturer as Dr. Voss. If I had the time I might just show up and sit in on a couple lectures. Not the toughest grader, not the easiest, but he lets you know what he's looking for.
Great lectures never took notes got a A. book for my class was about 800 pages but thats for a whole semester if you cannot read that much spaced out I think that is your problem (he also tells you to skim if neededjust get main idea). Lots of in-class discussion with opportunities for extra credit if you pay attention and participate.
Awesome! !!
He goes off topic a lot!!
Dr. Voss made all of his lectures entertaining, yet covered all needed materials that were going to be on the test equally, and helped you remember all of it. If you attend each lecture and take good notes, you should be able to get A's on the tests over the lectures. The tests over the books are also not too hard if you read through them fully.
Do NOT take this professor! he is a cool guy, but he can get off topic quick!
One of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are very interesting if you like learning about history and they keep you engaged. Take notes and read the assigned readings and you'll pass the tests. There's a lot of reading but if you start on it early it's not too bad. I would highly recommend him to anyone thinking of taking his class.
Legitimately the best professor I've ever had. Funny and charismatic, and he made history incredibly interesting. I genuinely feel sorry for those that haven't taken him. Yes, he assigns long readings. But guess what? The book quizzes are OPEN book. not only that, they all have an INDEX in the back. if you take your time, you'll get an easy A.
Hardest class I have ever taken. The readings are too much to keep up with. If your schedule in life is real busy this is not the class for you as the readings take up a lot of time and the tests are hard. He doesn't speak great english and goes off topic alot
Get ready to be debating! It makes the class ten times better that he is German, it adds informational and hilarious insight to the class!
Dr. Voss, if you are reading this, I love you.
Professor Voss makes history SO interesting. All tests are over lecture so showing up is crucial, but you will be so glad you did because his lectures are so good! I was nervous about taking a history course but I am so glad I ended up in this class because the workload is manageable and his lectures are memorable. Highly recommend!
The lectures were great and I managed to pay attention even though I knew most of the content already. He liked it incorporate stories into the lectures
I didnt ever study for the tests and suffered from it. But when I did , I knew everything on the tests. You have to listen to the lecture than whats on the slide and I learned that the hard way. The extra credit research paper brought me from a 70-90. Good teacher overall
One day for 20 minutes he lectured over a subject he had already covered the previous class and nobody stopped him. In 20 minutes he had told an entirely different story than the day before and mentioned several other bits of information aside from the major points that ended up being on the test. This is how lectures should be. He loves to teach.
You read 3 books while in his class and you better read them thoroughly!!! I didnt and suffered. He hands out extra credit each class for this reading asking what is the main point. Also there are weekly group debates in HST101
Voss can move quickly through the slides, and there's not much on them. You need to be good at auditory learning to really take good notes because most of the information is not on the screen but in his lectures. His test questions can be worded abstractly, but if you KNOW the course material you'll do okay. He's a really funny guy and very nice.
I have him for history 102 and he is super easy to learn from since he is so passionate about history and really wants us to know too. He is easy to understand with his German accent and makes our class laugh a lot. We do have to read a lot and make sure you know what your reading and also TAKE NOTES WELL
Dr. Voss gets distracted easily, and gets stuck on one topic for too long. The slides he uses in his lectures can be slightly difficult to follow. Extra credit in his class is competitive. Be ready to answer questions about the books in class. He is German, and while he doesnt have a thick accent, it is there.
Dirk has passion for history, makes the class interesting, and he makes people interested in what he says, hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Great teacher. Weve butted heads a few times but he really pushed me to think outside of my own preconceived notions. I would highly recommend.
Very respectful human
Dr. Voss is a wonderful professor. His lectures are interesting and they really grab your attention. Very nice and funny man.
Dr. Voss was my first introduction to college professors. And to say the least, the man is a true gem. As a German citizen, he uses his heritage to his advantage in his teaching by providing humor and a global look into how American History came to be. Safe to say, if you take Dr. Voss' class, you'll be in for a great year. I guarantee it.
Dr. Voss is possibly the most unique professor I've ever had. He is somewhat goofy, yet still very respectable. His class is easy if you pay attention. He's taught in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the US. You really need to read the books, because he asks an extra credit question every day about the current book. There is also group work.
He is a great teacher, he's funny, goofy, and gives great lectures. His class is easy if you pay attention. Which is easy since he's good at keeping your attention. He's taught in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the US. You really need to read the books, because he asks an extra credit question every day about the current book.
This class doesn't require a textbook, however, there are a couple of novels there have to be read throughout the semester. He gives extra credit questions almost every class about the chapters we have to read from the novels. The novel tests are take home and he gave us time to work on it. He teaches his lectures like a story, take good notes.
Great lecturer, which is a good thing because almost all points come from lectures. 100% would take again
Voss is incredibly respectable. He is of German descent and will let you know of it frequently. His lectures are very content heavy so take organized notes. He is funny and cares about your success. Every week there is a quiz over that weeks lectures and content, and you will need to read your assigned book chapters to score well. Voss is great.
I literally made an account on this website JUST to write a review for Dr. Voss. He is the sweetest, funniest professor, I loved taking his class. We had quizzes every week, but they were 16 questions and super easy if you pay attention to lectures. Switching to online because of the pandemic has been rough, but he seriously made it fun to log in.
Attendance wont be an issue in Dr Vosss class because youll want to attend. He gives amazing lectures and is always able to connect whatever historical event we are on to current events or his life. The tests werent difficult but I think I learned more from this class than any other history class Ive taken.
Voss is the best history professor you will ever have. I have learned more from him and been more interested in his lectures than I ever have been. He tests every week based on lectures and reading for the week. Extremely flexible with deadlines on tests and the questions are not hard at all. Final is made of up of easy essay questions.
Dr. Voss was the most AMAZING history professor I've ever had! History isn't really my jam, but he made it the best class ever. He's SO understanding, funny, kind, and makes the online class more of a community than a class. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class. There's a lot of reading, but it's not bad. ALSO- the final can be replaced by a paper
Great teacher, would definitely recommend for any history class. Probably the best teacher I've had at Meramec. He will definitely tell you he is german.
One of the best professors at STLCC
This course was such a great experience to have. I never lost my interest in any lecture thanks to Dr. Voss being such an attention-holding lecturer. The class is note heavy, and you will have to read a lot, but it really is a joy to go each day.
Sometimes hard to understand, but he makes up for it by being a great professor.
Dr. Voss is a great professor. His lectures will have you constantly learning things you never knew. HST 115 is a great class of his to take. However, I would not recommend taking HST 128 unless you absolutely love history. That class should be renamed "The history of Germany"
This is the most amazing professor I have ever had. Professor Voss made me fall in love with history. I have taken all of his classes. His lectures are so interesting. He is a fair grader and wants to hear your opinions. Tests weekly over the lectures. Pay attention and pass. I say attendance is not mandatory but you need to come to pass.
Very good professor
Fantastic teacher. You can tell he is passionately curious about the subject, extremely knowledgeable and funny. Offers perspective from a non-American standpoint, which makes class even more engaging. The man is a class act, I must say.
Dr. Voss is a true gem that every student should take! He is very kind and is by far the most hilarious instructor you will ever meet! Be prepared for some giggles. The readings can be pretty difficult, but Dr. Voss is more than happy to help. Overall, if you are prepared to read a lot, and enjoy rather humorous lectures, doesn't get any better.
If you loved story time in grade school, you'll love his lectures. The 16-week class could be strung into a large book or a Netflix series! If you crave meaning, the historical connections entwine together to form a large tapestry that explains why today is the way it is. You'll have a ball. If you just need a credit, that's ok too, just take him-
If you think that history is boring, go to his lectures! He is a fantastic teacher passionate about the topic and spreads enthusiasm everywhere. He makes lectures very engaging and exciting and STRUCTURED. Everything on the tests is from lectures and the assigned chapter from the books. Want to take classes from him just for fun!
Energetic, and passionate. Enjoyed learning in his class, and actually wanted to come class more. "textbook" readings are heavy, but manageable.
He is so nice and hilarious. Also, very laid back. Plus his accent makes it all the better. I would however recommend sitting towards the front as it will help with note-taking for the weekly quizzes.
This dude is amazing! Has so much compassion and enthusiasm
It really is incredible how much enthusiasm is brought to each and every lecture. Has great humor and is an amazing lecturer. However the books he chooses for us to read and be quizzed over are boring and long.
Funny, accommodating, and helpful. Best teacher I've had.
Dr. Voss is one of the best professors I've had and his Ancient and Medieval History class was a pleasure. I highly suggest taking one of his classes if you get the chance!
XT credit saved me in this class, first few tests are on quizlet 😉. The first few books are hard to read. Definitely use an audio book and Professor Voss WILL rant and get sidetracked so watch out. You can 100% get by from just lecture that is just me though. He is really funny and supportive of his students. Take good notes throughout lecture!
Dr. Voss is such a great professor. He's amazing at telling stories; his lectures are so fascinating. The books for the class I wasn't a fan of, they bored me a bit. The tests were all online (though I think that might change soon) and were the only grades for the course. Really cool class, I learned a lot. Will absolutely take him again if I can.
Such a great prof
The best teacher I've ever had
Dr. Voss is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had: he's funny, forms personal connections with his students, and his german heritage gives him an absolutely fascinating perspective on history which he brings into class. I'm extremely honored that I've been able to remain friends with such an amazing person and professor.
Professor Voss was hilarious! His tests and final were straightforward. He made the lectures fun and easy to understand. It is a reading-heavy class, though.
READ THE BOOKS. There's a quiz at the end of each week that covers the book you've been assigned and the lectures of the week. There's also a 60ish question final that covers all of the content you've covered. remember the answers of the weekly tests, that's where he gets the final questions. Find the books online for free, don't waste your money
The way he teaches is kinda just like story time. You take one multiple-choice quiz every week over what he talks about in class and the reading.
Dr. Voss is someone you want to learn from! He really challenges your mind into "what is history" and he will not keep going until you answer his question so answer, even if you're wrong. He teaches adult things, some sensitive, but he will let you know when it's a heavy day. His passion for history really shows and that is what makes him great
Great class Dr. Voss was very dramatic and animated, it very much helped the lectures. Very fun!
