Incredible amount of material for a 200 level. The tests have A LOT of info. She's really smart and kind.. just an overall difficult class.
Nice Lady, the material is VERY dry and she doesn't do a great job of making it exciting or relatively clear. She is helpful if you go to her. 2 tests extremely difficult the multiple choice is very confusing paired with moderately easier essays. She looses her mind if a phone goes off, which is WAY more disruptive than the phone, avoid if you can.
Honestly she's terrible.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO AVOID TAKING THIS INSTRUCTOR. CLASS IS NOT TOO DIFFICULT BUT THE TEST ARE INSANE. THE WAY SHE TEACHES AND GRADES ARE NOT EQUIVALENT. PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR IF POSSIBLE.
This is the hardest and worst class I've ever taken at WCSU. She does nothing to help a student but put the down and constantly says "I'm not spoon feeding you". I understand the material is "dry" but she could at least try and make it interesting. SHE puts forth no effort in helping you grasp the material or paper, avoid her at all costs!
Fair. Expects students to do well. Helps you but wont take pity and give easy grade! Make sure you read as she asks a lot of questions even in research class! Like her classes. Also took her crim course in fall.
You have to work. i always ask for help and she always helped me. there were couple of football students last sem in my 400 section and they were very rude to her. im happy they are not in my 405 section this sem. only one research paper to write an she give feedback on every section.
She spends so much time going over everything in class but few students just complaint as she didnt let us go early! Now I appreciate it as no way I could study everything on my own. Dont miss any class. Difficult to catch up missed work.
She's a mixed bag, you either like her or don't. Her tests are tough. M/C you have to think at least 4 times what she's asking. Short answer, is somewhat easier, but it's still a joke. Study, work, and ask questions. She'll help, but not enough. Makes simple concepts harder! The RP is annoying, espec lit review. In short, she's ok and ONLY that.
Liked the course. Wish earlier courses had been more challenging also. Would hv helped with this one. Very helpfull powerpoints.
Exams are mix of multiple choice, essays and short answers. Essays you either do well or struggle if you just memorize. Worked for me cuz I dont like memorizing even in high school. This is very different. Learn to write or you'll struggle even tho she drops lowest exam grade.
You have to buy book for this course. Took in spring and passed. Lecture notes were very helpful. Had a small and a couple of very rude students who only wasted time.
worst class I ever took
I was failing class as I was ill and missed 3 classes and wasnt sure what to do. she send a note for me to see her and helped me go over all the missed work. i am going to pass the course and probably with a B. btw,the only prof i know who would call out on any student cheating and take action. i appreciate that fairness.
Had many quizes and tests that helped even if on one quiz I did bad. Overall you get many chances and that's helpful. Strict about attendance
Very helpful. A lot of quizzes and assignments. Dropped lowest two quiz grades which helped as I don't do well at the start of semester. I loved jeopardy group quiz. It was fun and really made me know everything about the chapter. Should do more of those!!
Was nervous taking 405 as I took 400 with another professor while others in class had taken with her and knew what to do in 405. But she's very helpful & gave very clear instructions and detailed feedback. So detailed you might wonder if u did anything right :) but it helped alot. I actually learned abt how & why to do research & improve things.
Taking my first online course and wasnt excited. My friend took one and struggled, Dr. Sharma is very helpful. Replies very fast. Detailed guidelines for every assignments. Feedback is very helpful. I wish I had taken more online courses. It would made work easy as my schedule get changed at times.
Took Sharma for an online course. She gives you everything you need to know in the syllabus and posts powerpoints to go with the readings. Literature review was clear and she helps you along the way, if needed. A few minor assignments that were discussions. Do your work and stay on topic and you will do fine. Sharma responds quickly and detailed.
Best online class and I have taken many! Gave feedback on every question on exams. Never had anyone reply so quickly. It really helped as its a short semester. Only thing I would say is increase time for online discussions. Some times felt I ran out of time to participate more. I enjoyed her class and will definitely take her in full semester.
I got A in Mrs. Sharma's course and it is the most deserving A that I have. In 4 years, only three courses prepared me for the real world and it was one of them.
Many exams and short quizzes. Felt like there was something every week. It helped in the end because I did poor on two quizzes but didnt hurt my grade too much. Better than having just midterm and final exam. Also videos on research were really helpful in understanding research topics.
WORST PROFESSOR AT WCSU I EVER HAD. DO NOT TAKE HER AT ALL.
She's a horrible professor! does not help if you ask her for help and she goes around the question you ask her. I asked her for help because i knew i was doing bad in the course she quickly told me to withdraw did not even try to help me. I would AVOID taking her course !!!! her classes are very very hard !
Stay away if you can. Material is dull which isn't her fault but she doesn't do much to help you out. Only thing that helped was the videos she showed in class, which she explained and went over with the class. One pro: she gets back to your emails very quickly. Ask questions, and show up to class you should do fine. Take online if available.
Course material was dull but she made it interesting. Used a lot of examples and videos. Very helpful. I personally don't think she's very tough on grading as everyone makes it out to be, but its more difficult course than most others so need to work harder. Seriously no extra credit so don't miss any work.
Took 4 week winter course with Dr. Sharma. Its same amount of work as other regular semester but she had told us that right away. my advice, if possible take full regular sem if you work too. Excellent professor and really helped a lot. Gave lot of instructions on everything and replied to emails very fast. I'm thrilled to have done well!
JLA 400 is not a very exciting course, however Dr. Sharma did her best to make the material approachable and interesting. She has a lot of experience in conducting research, and often shares many firsthand stories. 10 page final paper - do what you're told, and you'll pass; the assignment is clear. Expect multiple choice and short answer tests.
All my professors are helpful but it was my first course with Mrs. Sharma. Also my first online course. I cannot even tell how helpful she was all through the course. My computer had many problems but she always helped me very fast. Also its not all stats course, much more than that.
Took 3 classes wid her & recommend. There was one much older man who kept asking for extra credit & was real annoying. Another one kept arguing after always using phone in class. Dr. Sharma needs to get tough with such rude students. Class is not bad at all. She makes dry material interesting. Quizzes every other week. Good videos. Dont miss class.
Her class primarily consists of vague and outlined powerpoints. You can tell she loves what she does but does poorly on explaining the material. If you have a problem memorizing insignificant numbers and details, do not take this course. She tests heavily on minor details within the reading that she does not go over in class but expects you to.
Took for elective. Textbook was tough and had too many examples but she made it easy by telling us what couple of case studies to read & tested on that. I replied more on her powerpoints as she highlights what to pay attention to. She usually gave us powerpoints in advance and that helped a lot.
Loved this course! Though you have to get text book if you follow her power points you'll pass the course. My favorite part was jeopardy quiz. May be should use more movies. Taking another course with sharma next semester.
I took it online for free elective to adjust with my work. Best online course & professor. Posted everything in syllabus & blackboard. I read book for case studies but mostly followed her notes. She gives feedback on every question and replies fast. Dont skip anything in her notes and dont expect make up or extra credit.
Best online course. Hope to take again for another course. It was my second course with Dr. Sharma. I wish she had used podcast and audio as she had in the previous course. Still loved it. One of the best professors! Her powerpoint is the key to passing her courses. I saw twice during her office hours and she is very helpful.
I took White Collar Crime with Dr. Sharma Spring 2017 and enjoyed it a lot. She is a great professor, but be prepared to do a lot of memorizing. For the tests, I had to basically know what each case study was from beginning to end, which was not easy but I was able to do it because this was not a boring class. Do not even think about cheating.
I am already looking forward to another online course with Dr. Sharma. Its not even my major. I've taken a few online courses and she's the only one who gives feedback on every essay on exam. No other professor does that. Its helped me focus more clearly and write better. Does not give extra credit but best professor.
Professor Sharma is one of the best in creating an online curriculum. I have taken her White Collar Crime 336 and Criminology 201 and both are great online courses. The power point slides are a great guide for studying for exams and she provides great feed back after each exam. Would highly recommend both online classes
JLA 336 (WCC): Very interesting class and she made the material very clear and understandable. I finished with B. JLA 400 (Research Methodology): Boring class but not her fault. I could care less about research which is why I only got C. Both classes: Tests were kind of tricky and the MCQ were harder then the essay questions. Don't skip class.
I took winter course with Dr. Sharma and was unsure how it would go as there was no textbook. She used articles. I am actually thrilled because the articles were excellent and current. Dr. Sharma even had a guest speaker and it was great to listen to podcasts. Do not miss the discussions because she doesn't give make up. BEST PROF!
Very nice person, VERY tough professor. Tests on minute, seemingly insignificant details not to test your knowledge but rather to see if you've read the book letter by letter. Powerpoints are vague and her tests, especially online, are overwhelming. Don't take her summer classes if you have a job/social life/any plans for break, you won't have time
Took Ethics course in summer with her. It was my 3rd online course and required most work. I dint mind the work as she gave feedback on every question and emailI sent her. I have never had a professor who would tell me how to do better & helped me improve. Second half of book was tough but her notes helped stay focus. Taking another course with her
Not my major but most interesting course. First time I'm reading every thing. She gives every exam over 3 days that make it easy to take them with my work. Her notes make it easy to follow whats important. Rare professor who doesnt give free grades. Follow her notes, learn and dont rely on cheating in online course.
Dr. Sharma is the best JLA prof. Most profs here only tell you what they know or think. She's highly educated but most interested in actual teaching. I've taken 4 courses with her. First exam is always toughest then gets easy. Higher standards than others but most helpful. Real online exams, can't cheat through. Drops 1 or 2 lowest quiz grades.
Dr. Sharma is one of the best professors I have ever had. She goes out of her way to help you understand the material if you are struggling. A very caring professor. I am grateful for her.
Her online tests do not match her power-points or text book. Not enough time to finish her online multiple choice tests. Doesn't give any extra credit work. She is not considerate no matter what the situation maybe.
I am senior and took her classes first time but took 2. LOVED visual crim class. Its a very different course but help explain what goes on in media and social media and the way people form views about police, courts and groups. I would agree with other comment that says you have know material to pass her course. She doesnt give free points.
My 2nd course with Dr. Sharma this sem. Missed jeopardy in this class but enjoyed Legos task. She does a lot of research herself and has first hand experience. Drop 2 lowest grades and gave 2 week extension on term paper. She guides and helps out but don't expect freebies. I respect that as I work for my A's and B's. Taking 405 with her next sem.
Took it for free elective. Liked it so much that took another free elective terrorism course with her in winter. Sets high standard and doesn't do favors but very reasonable for emergencies or other urgent things. Trying to pull a fast one won't work on her. To get A follow her notes. Rare prof who doesnt give any easy grades.
She posts audio and powerpoints and you do best by reading the definitions in the book of what she asks to read. She write them on powerpoints and talks about in audio but doesnt give definitions there so we dont cheat and have to really read and learn :) I'm actually learning something. Planning to take two more courses with her in fall.
After 1st exam I met her and it was great to get advice about audio lectures. Helped me with the rest of the exams. I'll agree with others you have to earn your grade. A lot of time on assignments made it easy. Exams were tough and timed but if you pay attention to her notes you'll do well. Very nice professor and always replied.
Dr. Sharma is probably one of the worst professors ive ever hard. shes a tough grader and her tests are unfair. She gives you 43 minutes to complete a test made up of 43 or more questions and the questions are not short. I had a technical issue while taking a test, emailed her about it, and her response was rude. Never taking this professor again.
Terrible professor. Never in her office/late during office hours and wouldn't even dignify my emails with a response in regards to critical assignments. An absolute dreadful grader and was the only professor I've had at WCSU that actually distributed pop quizes. Every week felt as if there was a test or quiz in her class. Avoid.
Rare professor with college level standards. Clear policy and sticks to it. A few in my class didnt want any work but I was happy because I'm proud of effort I put in. Two students were very rude and kept screaming for easy A. She's always available in her office hours and helped with extra work in WRD research contest. Reading and writing matter.
Those complaining about limited time for online exam are used to copying in online exams. Her syllabus tells you about the time allowed for exams. Only 2 JLA professors time exams and if you're used to cheating in online courses, don't take hers. I'm taking 3rd online course with her and love it. Very accessible in office hours and video conf.
Even though had taken 2 courses with Dr. Sharma I was nervous signing up for 405. She's a real researcher and expects good work. It couldn't have gone better and I presented my 405 work at Western Research Day. I had hands on experience about data collection and presenting findings. There's no textbook, but gave handouts. One paper and that's it.
I took four courses with Dr. Sharma. She always gives few extra minutes than what is on syllabus. Those complaining about time limit dont read syllabus and fail exam because they cannot cheat. Dont take her course if you plan to pass by cheating. In her notes always look for things she has in different colors those are really important.
Take 405 with Dr. Sharma. She really knows policy research and helped get ethics form approved and collect data. You don't have to collect data but I wanted to and she was great. I didnt present at research day but learned a lot. She gave us articles from library. No book. No exam. One big paper that we revised all through semester.
Dr. Sharma is a sweetheart! She has real passion for teaching and is the most intelligent but kindest professor that I've had. Very helpful and really wants us to do well. Her assignments are very easy. Exams are not so easy but if you follow her notes you'll be fine. I wish she was here next semester. I wanted to take 336 with her.
I took this class as an elective and i worked harder in this class than i have in my cores, at least it feels like it because it was a summer course. You will read 11 chapters in a matter of a month with exams every four chapters. The exams are considered essay and m/c questions. Make sure you read and follow guide lines as it does get confusing
I would not recommend her online course to anyone who has difficulty learning online. She is a very tough grader and does not give very much time when it comes to tests. Your grade is only based on 3 assignments and 3 tests, which are all worth a significant percentage so if you miss an assignment or test, your grade will be largely affected.
I missed online evaluation at semester end and want to say Dr. Sharma is awesome. I've taken 3 jla courses though it's not my major and criminology is amazing. Shes criminology expert but it's great how she make it connect to real examples. I'll look to take one more course with her. Don't miss discussions, very easy. Great podcasts. Very helpful
I took this class online, I got the book and never opened it I just studied her powerpoints. She expected us to read the chapters as well as her 70 slide powerpoints and take a test on a few chapters every few weeks. All she was basically looking for is if we memorized what we read. I don't think it was worth taking it online. She's approachable.
Took over summer and was easier than thought. Had to do regular reading and had 6 exams. After first exam I was really good with writing. Thank you for feedback. Was hoping to take 405 with her in my last semester her but she teaches that in spring only I'm told. Read and ask questions to do well as she's really university level prof.
Wish I could take her again but Im almost done. I took for free elective & it was my best course. None of my other courses included podcasts so I was expected ppt only but her lectures were great and helped me concentrate. Exams are easy if you follow ppt and read that portions in book. but her lectures always explain extra. Great Prof!
A lot of reading. Book was too big and had lot of examples but she'd tell us which examples to read. that was very helpful. i liked having video lectures in course. discussions are very easy & open for long time. essays were easy also if u make summary of case studies before exam. for multiple choice read mostly things she puts in different colors.
Dr. Sharma makes her class incredibly difficult for no reason. She never offers extra credit. She is not the slightest bit understanding if you have a technical difficulties. Her exams are very abstractly worded.
Loved jeopardy. that was such a cool groups project. my team members were great too. enjoyed class and taking crim with her next semester for another free elective. exams are easy. she marks all important notes in different colors and tells you! i'm not JLA major but liked the class and Dr. Sharma is rad.
Taken two 332 with Dr. Sharma. This was very interesting and different from all courses. No book. Easy exams. Very easy assignments. Her lectures are great. I only have 2 professors who record all lectures. 3 of us took exams on campus because of computer problem. She was very helpful but doesn't tolerate cheating.
Best course ever! We read original articles by criminologists and Dr. Sharma explained how they apply today. She is herself criminologist and helps connecting theory and policy. Definitely take this course with her. Paper presentations were great fun and ended semester on a high note. Clear grading scale and work. Always helpful.
Most assignments are worth around 10 points which gives no room for mistakes. The textbook required for the class is terrible, it is her book. Also, her questions in tests, powerpoints, and homework assignments are so poorly written, they make no sense. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Cannot cheat in her courses because she uses proctorio. First time I took online course that was controlled like that. Gives powerpoints with important topics in different colors. But I also enjoyed audio lectures. 6 exams and 3 assignments will keep busy. University level course. I hope to take advanced criminology with her.
Homework was very easy with lots of time to complete.. just simple discussion posts and having to reply to 3 others. She is an easy grader when it comes to the homework. Tests on the other hand? She nitpicks everything. Tests involve multiple choice and essays. She 100% WILL rip your essays apart in her reviews.. doesn't matter how much you study
I appreciate that Dr. Sharma leaves copies of textbook in library.I used it only. Met with her 5 times in library & office to go over my writing and notes. Very easy to talk to. Taking another course with her in fall. Can't cheat in her online courses. Making notes ahead of time is important. Follow her color coded system in notes.
I took her 400 in fall. I didnt tell my family situation & was struglling. Met my advisor she told me to drop and take again in spring and 405 in summer with her. But prof Sharma askd me to not drop and grad on time. She told what I needed on final and paper to pass. She gave lego extra credit. Im happy that I talked to prof Sharma. I'm graduating.
Super nice and welcoming. Her tests are kind of annoying with multiple choice and essay questions, but if you find a good study strategy you should be fine. Get the textbook, it's written by her but that's all she ever refers to. Not too many assignments. Kind of an easy grader.
I do not recommend her course.
Very different course than anything I've taken. Learned, read and wrote a lot. I think I grew up into a professional! Dr. Sharma has a reputation of a quality professor and it shows. Very informative. Great audio lectures. Exams tested my understanding and not just memory. Never had open office hours in any online course except this. Very helpful.
Love Dr. Sharma's criminology course. only professor who record lectures. made it easy to learn and listen. i usually played it driving from work and read chapter later. lectures follow chapter topics. exams are tough and she doesn't allow any cheating like other online courses. learned a lot.
I am not a CJ major and took this course for free elective at the last minute. Professor knew how many ouside majors were taking course and helped with things that only majors would know. I've never come across anyone who is a professor but helpful so appreciated her class a lot. Top standard and helpful. Jeopardy Quiz was out of this world.
Dr. Sharma's research course made 405 very easy for me. I decided that I want to go to graduate school next and she helped me picked school. Most professors here don't teach and don't care so her class felt different. She is tenured but still teaches. She gives extra credit though says she wont so keep asking. Our class got lego for free credit.
I would take another course with her but I am graduating in December! Took research in summer. It was online and she gave youtube lectures and made it easy and fun course. I rarely used book. I already have an A in 405 thanks to all I learned from her in 400. Thank you Mrs Sharma, you're the best professor I had.
I took her class for Research Methods, the class was definitely tough but she gives you all the tools to do well. Its very important that you pay attention to her lectures and read the book, otherwise you wont do well. She does her best to help if you need it, she is available outside of class. She can be a tough grader but is overall a good teacher
Took crim online with another prof and dropped because there was nothing to learn. Took campus course with Dr. Sharma and it was totally different course. She explains everything in simple way and knows so many examples. 6 exams but easy because of color coded powerpoints & check lists. Follow it always. 2 group projects were best fun. Great prof!
Met Dr. Sharma as I'm taking research with another prof over summer & asked if she could give methods overview. I have been working for few years now and was anxious about grad research. She set aside 2 hours and explained all the basics. She's brilliant, kind and very unassuming professor for her stature. Wish I could take more courses with her.
Love Dr. Sharma! Great lectures with color codes for important exam material. Textbook was fun for once and I read it cover to cover. She puts copies on reserve in library to use for free. Her online course is not like others. She has high quality content and its great learning. I'll add JLA Minor if I could take more courses with her.
VERY tough grader, made the exams way more difficult than they needed to be. She expected you to study EVERY SINGLE THING she went over and would NOT explain what would exactly be on the exams. Instead, her answer was to study everything and hope to memorize it all for the exams. Exams included multiple choice, short answer and essays.
Took this course because title was interesting and i recommend everyone take it. If you are graduating in May take it in spring. Best thing! Its about social media, movies news about crime cases Made me think about how we believe things based on movies or documentaries. Prof gives lists of main topics for each article. Prepare that and it's an A.
Great prof! Nice course! Shortest course. Only 9 chapters. Gives key words and essay topics. Study it and its an easy A. I caught up after first quiz. Snow canceled last class & she made exam online. Very easy videos and extra credit. 2 guys were very rude to her and Prof Sharma tolerates too much. Seen her tolerate rude girl last sem also.
Took over summer online. I was nervous but Dr. Sharma made it easy and interesting. Assignments only and very helpful sample work. I'm a visual learner and loved textbook with images. She's the only professor who met on zoom in summer. Helped me pass not just 400 but also 405.
Love Dr. Sharma! She teaches very differently from others. Not shy to talk about current topics. Other profs are outdated. Loved jeopardy quiz and groups work about sentencing goals. I missed 1 quiz but she gives make up in last week if excused with document. Very professional! Always helpful but does not tolerate rude behavior.
Taking this class wasn't actually hard, in my opinion, the professor made it harder by teaching things from the book but adding on in the lecture. Which is not an issue but she doesn't slow down so the class can keep up. She does follow the syllabus to the bone. It is hard to differentiate what is needed for the tests and what is not.
Loved this course and will take more with Dr. Sharma. Kind, fun and no nonsense professor. Two students whining for make up work were very rude in class and as someone paying out of pocket, I appreciated Dr. Sharma for not letting them disrupt and take other students time. 6 assignments, 3 exams. Everything spelled out. Group work is great.
Course turned out easier than I thought. A lot of exams and assignments. I overthought first one & met Dr. Sharma. She helped me with it which helped with other assignments. Exams were easy. Did my last exam today and cant believe I got A-! If you can take in person though because I heard she has many group activities.
She knows what she did.
