Does not speak clear english. Nice guy, tries hard but really cannot seem to make the class understand. More than 60% of the class were failing half way through. Be sure to study on your own.
He this is the worst teacher I have had at G-state. I passed this class but can't even tell you how cause I learned nothing. Do not take his class if you don't have to.
This guy tries really hard, but his English is very hard to understand. The way he posed questions in class was always confusing and by the time you figured out what he was trying to ask...it was on to the next subject. I figured out more from the book than the class. He also gives 8 pop quizzes throughout the semester so you have to pay attention.
If Prof. Shishkin develops better English skills, then perhaps he could become a really good professor. He needs to learn more ways to describe and explain the material. I think he has potential, but meanwhile he didn't teach the material so well. Be he's friendly and wants his students to succeed.
His classes were fairly boring, but if you can make it through the lectures and complete the study guide questions, you should be okay. It's a difficult subject to teach, so he does his best so help his students understand and is willing to give extra credit at the end to help out. Attendance isn't mandatory, but beware of the quizzes!
This was a difficult and fun class. The professor is really good, sometimes its hard to understand his examples but when you asked for help or asked for him to explain it another way he always tried his best to help you in every way possible. He does a great job with covering the material that will be on the test through his powerpoints & lectures
He is okay. Just read the book, you should do fine. His reviews are very helpful. I wish he gave us more homework. Then it'll be more helful for the students.
The class can be stressful if you do not study and read the chapters prior to tests. The test questions come straight from the material covered and the study guides are very helpful. Beware of the quizzes they can drop you a leter grade. Overall he is still learning to teach but he does a great job explaining hard concepts.
READ THE BOOK. highlight the bold words and you will be fine.
I am having a very difficult time in his class. He is very hard to understand however, he is a nice guy. He teaches directly from the book so that's a plus. Just read the book as you go through the semester
He is an extremely smart guy, and is passionate for what he does; however, he doesn't understand teaching as a whole. Many students have asked him for help and the usual reply is "Oh, well you need to read your textbook" or "Oh, well you should have paid attention in class.
He is a nice guy and knows the subject but he can't teach it because of his language barrier. gives a lot of homeworks without explaining similar examples. i recomend everyone to not take his class if they want to pass Economics.
Most of the students had no idea how to handle a college-level course. Dr Shishkin did a terrific job trying to keep students on pace. However, most of the students didn't have any desire to learn the material. I found the course to be easy, without outside help or use of the textbook. We went over material many times yet still not enough for some.
The class was fairly easy to follow. Some students gave his accent as a reason for failing the class. Yes, he has a Russian accent. However, if you actually listen to him, there is no reason why you should have trouble understanding him. Be prepared for more courses/professors like this if you plan to succeed in college. Overall a very good prof.
He's not that bad at all.....don't believe all the ratings. Just hang in there, go to class, and do your work. Always work in pairs, that 1 point for extra credit is extremely useful. But he's a good teacher.
Do the homework! It will make the test much easier.
Macro - The first day of class was a bit rough, but he warmed up to us after a while. Make sure you know about Supply and Demand, you will use that method throughout the WHOLE class. Do the homework. Sometimes he will go over it the next class period, but you just have to ask. Don't be afraid to ask him questions, he will do his best to help.
worst teacher i've ever had and i've been in college for 3 years. he does not even know the course he is teaching and cannot get through a single problem without looking at his notes.
Hands down the worst teacher EVER. Do not take his class if you actually want to learn something. He needs to find a new profession.
Well hes a really nice guy, but as a teacher...not so good. Micro was a really hard class. He makes the final 50% of your grade as well...so yeah. His teaching is not clear at all, an its pretty much a self taught class.
Do NOT take this class with this professor. He only gives 2 tests throughout the semester: the Midterm (30% of your grade) and the Final (50% of your grade. He is a nice guy, but he should not be a college professor. Is hard to understand him and is hard for him to explain things. Many times he said: just trust me, this is right but I can't expl
He prefers to use his own definitions and interpretations as well as vocabulary which made the book useless when studying. He also had a lack of clarity during lectures which made taking notes difficult as well.
I took him for half a semester and was failing his class. Then realized I'd taken the course at a previous school and dropped his class. Ironically, I made an A in the other stat class at another school with a lady who spoke even less English than him. I do not know how this man has a job! I did all homework, studied daily and had an F..not normal
Good teacher. Has an accent but def understandable. Sometimes doesn't explain things well because he assumes you understand, but does a good job of covering everything you need to know. Tests + final were 80% of the grade, which I really like. If you're not good at tests, you might not. Myeconlab helps you understand the material you don't get.
He's a good teacher but sometimes hard to understand. He goes over most of the homework in class before you have to turn it in. 2 tests 20% of your grade each and final is 40%. Class is boring, but I haven't met a teacher yet who can make statistics interesting. I like his Russian accent.
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He will work with you too help you learn the material. It's a tough class, but if put the effort in then you'll do fine. Know how to do the problems he goes over in class and you should be good for the test.
He knows what he is talking about, at least in his own mind. Uses alot of homecooked formulas. Be prepared to teach yourself if you wnat a decent grade.
A little hard to understand and with a tuff subject, it is not the best combination. But he is a good teacher. If you want to really learn the subject, take him.
Horrible professor. He makes this material much harder than it is. At the end of the lecture everyone seemed confused. His examples were never completed, he only worked 1/2 of the problem. On the second exam the professor had 2 problems that did not have a correct answer. He is very unprofessional and unorganized. The class ave was 73
Ok, so I have had this professor for two different economics classes and got A's in both of them. His teaching style has improved dramatically since the first class i had with him. Just remember to stop listening to him when he trys to explain a second way of doing something because it is usually harder. Definitely recommended
Horrible teacher, doesn't even try to teach the course, he gives a lot of useless homework and his tests are impossible. If you don't mind teaching an entire course to yourself take him, if not stay away.
AWFUL professor. Will not try to help you if you don't understand. He thinks that since he knows economics that you should know it too. The tests are impossible, and he gets excited when the average is a low C - "72". If you want any chance of an A or even a low B - TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. If you want to learn anything, you have to do it on your own. His lectures he records you have to watch before class are USELESS. This guy SUCKS.
He is helpful, but overall it's a hard class. He will drop lowest test grade, which helped me quiet a bit.
He is a hard teacher. you can't be late at all or he'll will call you out and then email you. don't ask him to explain anything or you will be even more confused. his class is not even worth your time. I wouldn't even want my worst enemy to have him as a teacher, yes he is that bad.
Dr.Shishkin is a overall good professor. He can move a little fast at times but if you ask questions he is more than willing to slow down and answer them. Only take him if you are an active learner meaning ask questions, study, and are willing to learn economics.
DO NOT TAKE! Horrible teacher. Makes up own formulas that he cannot explain (or any of the ones in the book). Can't understand him and if you ask him to explain anything you will end up even more confused. Worst teacher I have taken so far and I am an A student so don't think I am lazy. Class average just on HW is low because no one understands it.
He is not that bad. I dont expect an A because of my efforts. The HW is online, he gives handouts, answer keys and email video lectures of all the material to all his students. I understood him 97% of the time.
this teacher is very hard to understand , moves fast and is really hard to understand , trys to explain things in a very confusing . DONT TAkE
I like Dr. Shishkin. I think he loves econ so much so he is very passionate about what he is teaching. Everyone starts off with 3 extra credit points, and everytime that your'e late you lose a point, but when he's late you get a point. I have 5 EC points! His tests are just like his practice problems. Only negative is he gets off topic at at times.
Dr. Shiskin is honestly a pretty cool teacher. He is very laid back and means well. He has a very thick Russian accient and talks about Russia a lot. You have easy homework grades and only have three test. He drops certain grades. I like him, he is easy.
He does not teach the material very well, and I can hardly understand him because of his accent. However all of the 3 tests you take are easy, (he curves them & drops the lowest) and the homework is online and an unlimited amount of tries. If you want an easy grader take him, but if you actually want to learn the material, then dont!
He is not a good teacher, but he gives out worksheets that help a lot! if you do the worksheets and online homework you will do fine. He also gives 6 points extra credit for not being tardy & filling out a survey. Would definitely take him again!
He is a good and kind professor, as long as you show up on time, do the online homework, and study for the tests. The homework has unlimited tries and there are only three tests, which make up the entire grade.
Great Professor wants you to pass and tells a lot of good stories pertaining to Econ! Take Him
Dr. Shishkin is a great professor, he likes to tell a lot about his russian stories. Overall if you attend his class he gives extra credit for that. 3 exams and basic econ lab every week , nothing too bad. He curves grades like he's in the MLB! I made an A in his class with just paying attention. No book was needed.
AVOID!!!! this guy is pigheaded and disorganized. I had to email him several times to adjust my grades. And getting him to do that was like an act of congress. Avoid like the plauge.
You will not learn a ton about econ but the class is pretty easy. All you have to do is either read the text or come to class. You start with 5 extra credit points added to your grade but each day you do not attend he subtracts a point. You will learn a bit about russia and camping from his tangents
He does not help you understand the work. Taking Dr. Shishkin was a big mistake no help at all.
I highly suggest not to take him. You have an in-class assignment for each time you come to class which you work with a group. A MyEconLab you have to do and lecture video to watch before each class session. The majority of my class learned absolutely nothing from him and we all struggled. This was a self-taught class.
Dr. Shishkin tries to be helpful but ends up confusing you more. He has an accent which can be confusing at times. He kind of sounds like Gru from Despicable me which I thought was cool :) He gives alot of extra credit for coming to class and being on time. The tests are also curved to a degree.
This guy is of no help at all. Very Condescending attitude towards students who need extra help. You will think your irritating him when asking him questions. AVOID!
Self taught class as said before. You literally have to teach yourself. In the beginning of class he will go over the slideshow..very boring .This a group based class. +5 extra points for not missing class. one point deducted for each time you do miss.Regretted taking this class not withdrawing. I wouldn't recommended taking this course.
He is impossible. No help at all. I hope you know how to teach yourself, because that is the only way you will pass this class.
Terrible absolutely terrible professor. Gets mad and personal if you don't understand his lectures. Apparently if you have a question its because you are not prepared so he doesn't answer because "it's all in the book" & the hour long videos you must watch & take notes on before every class.
Nice guy but not very clear and he is very confusing. Ask a question and he will answer but then 5 minutes later someone else asks that same question and he gives a different answer. Also he doesn't lecture very much it is all online videos and he is super monotone. He thinks you should already know this info. Don't take him. most of class failed
I wouldn't normally rate a professor with all 1's but Wow.. This professor is honestly just not a good teacher. He assumes he can teach the class, but when he asks a question no one can respond with an answer.. Plainly because no one knows. He seems to be like Leonardo Dicaprio in "Shutter Island" - Very confused. Poor class. Do not take. No prob.
This was a MW class. It felt like a hybrid class. Even with an hybrid class you still get a lot of help. I got zero help in this class. Homework was due at the end of class but it was never taught to us. Same goes for quizzes, quizzes were taken at the beginning of class. Each day was a new lesson. There is more to econ than just demand & cost.
His class felt like a hybrid class. We barely learn anything in class. We have to watch online tutorials every night and expect quizzes next class without any lessons. We literally had to show up to class just to show him our homework. I was expecting a standard class but this class is honestly like a hybrid class. Expect to teach yourself!
Being on time is important, you will get points taken off if he calls your name and your not there, he gives you half credit even if your 2 mins late after role call. He is good at explaining the material, but he doesn't plug in the numbers, he uses the formula and expects you to make the connection.
Prof Shishkin is not a bad Professor, if you ask him for individual help he does explain the material. Just study the in class assignments for your test because he uses the same exact problems on the test or very similar problems. Make study group because it will help. Overall i would take him again. You just have to put effort.
His lectures are all over the place, and he is terrible at teaching.
It's imperative to study the in class assignments because the questions on tests are very similar. The material itself is fairly easy, but you just have to put in the effort to ask questions if you don't understand something.
He moves very fast, and is sometimes hard to understand. Tests basically follow along with the in class assignments for the most part. Sometimes it seems as though he does not know what he is talking about.
Dr. Shiskin had online classes basically and you would only go to class to receive credit on the work. His lectures would be all over the class. The worksheets were easy if you understood the lectures but it was just a confusing class in general. His test were a copy of the worksheets and his final was too. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Every day, we work on an in class worksheet, which counts as an attendance grade. Exams are a replica of the worksheets, and the final is a replica of the exams, so if you understand how to do the problems, you'll be okay. He also posts videos and worksheet answers on D2L. Not a difficult class, just a difficult professor to understand.
Very confusing lectures, & confusing/ degrading teacher. From the beginning of the semester I knew that I wasn't going to be pleased. Dmitry takes off points for every little thing. If you are looking for a concerning professor or a great learning environment, DO NOT PICK THIS CLASS!!!
A quiz at the beginning of every class that's based on wat u learned n the previous class and an assignment u must print out and bring 2 every class or he'll take points off. He averages the score of ur quiz and assignment for ur grade that day. So if u get a 0 on the quiz and 100 on the assignment u hav a 50 for the day and no formula sheets ever
Long lectures that are difficult to understand/follow and doesnt give you any feedback on assignments or exams. Attendance is absolutely mandatory. Not the worst, but if you have the option, take this course with someone else.
This was the worst and hardest class. He's an awful professor. Prepare to teach yourself everything and be given graded assignments on things you haven't learned yet. Have a question about the content? might as well google it or ask someone else, because he is NO help AT ALL. If I didn't have to take this class, I would've dropped it ASAP.
Honestly, wish I had dropped the class. His lectures are so confusing and had to basically teach myself the material. Dr. S also thought it was normal to have the class test average to be in the 60's. Find another professor if you have to take Microeconomics.
If you dont work hard in this class, you will definitely not pass. His grading and lectures are ok, but the class material itself is what is hard. You pretty much have to teach yourself if you dont understand it. If there is a better teacher who actually helps you, take them.
I struggled a lot in this class and so did many of my other classmates. I didn't pass a single test. While I would not recommend his style of teaching, he gave extra credit when possible and curved the final(even though he said he wouldn't curve) so I ended up passing with a C. Tests are similar to online quizzes, but the final is over lectures.
He is not the best at teaching. Very old school. Just know that you'll need to teach your self, if you can do that then your good tbh. The material can be confusing to teach you self tho.... Don't take this class if you actually want to learn!!
He doesnt teach he expect u to read the book before class and during class we practice problems. That he thibk we should already know he foes at a fast pace so be prepared for that i dropped his class ill just take it with some one else next semester STAY AWAY you been warned
Dr. S, is a horrible professor. His lectures and explanations make no sense, and he seems to confuse even himself. The text book does not help explain anything, and the quizzes are worded horrible and contain information that was not covered in class. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Dr. Shishkin was not as bad as most people say. Econ is a difficult topic in general. He does give a lot of homework, but it will prepare you for exams. If you study his homework assignments and in-class assignments, you will be fine for exams. Lectures could be confusing, but he tried his hardest to help everyone understand the content.
I would say save the headache and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. His in class and video lectures were hard to grasp. His first exam was easy but the rest were difficult including the final. If I had to take the class all over again I wouldn't choose him.
He's got a great accent. He came in wearing a beret todayabsolute LEGEND!! Should be a really easy class if you come to classes.
To be successful in this class you have to do the reading, hw quizzes, and YouTube videos if you are confused. Definitely not an easy A and most people have an easier time with the other professor. Very straightforward and a nice guy overall.
I had Prof Shishkin for the fall semester. He never did a good job at explaining why you answer a question that way or the formulas you use for particular problems. He also came off as very rude and not caring.
Do not take him. Very unreasonable. If you work any sort of job or have any personal problems going on avoid him. He does not care about what goes on outside of class he expects no matter what you to get a 90 or above on every assignment. He is very rude if you ask any sort of question.
You can find the textbook online and download it and use it instead of buying one. Class participation matters. You need to read the textbook and look at his youtube videos for sure. He seems very difficult at first but he is very willing to help you understand if you ask him for help. Nice guy.
Very nice guy. Sadly, he is very out of touch with students and is extremely strict, inflexible with policies. His lectures are not lectures. He asks questions and expects you to know everything beforehand. If you don't answer his questions correctly, you get no participation credit. Awful method and turned class into a competition for this. Avoid!
Great professor as a person but as a teacher is difficult. He has many assignments for each chapter. Make sure you read the entire chapter because he expects you to talk about what you learned otherwise you will not get participation credit. We cover a lot of ground and the final is cumulative. Basically, as long as you do the work you will learn.
I found that the lectures were basically the videos he would require you to watch before class with a few exceptions. Sometimes if you'd get a question wrong he would look at you like you're crazy which doesn't help anyone. His class is structured and he seems to explain things quite well. The HW quizzes are worded weird sometimes but are doable
Dropped this class immediately. Guys standards are nuts. Even provided the class with a letter on how he didnt help round up a lower income student half a point to get a scholarship. Believes students should teach themselves. Requires too much from students, do not take. Mandatory camera on for zoom calls.
His handwriting makes me think I have dyslexia, a tough grader!!!
He is very strict and you do have to rest yourself a lot of material. Must participate and answer questions to get class participation class credit. Quizzes due at 8pm the following day . Extremely reliant on the readings in the book, read them!! Post videos so just copy notes. I passed but it was still extremely tough
Classic example of a bad professor, the material itself isnt hard, but he makes it hard, he refuses to round grades, lots of stuff on the exam isnt covered in the text book or in the lectures, you basically have to teach your self. Only reason I took him was because I had to register late. Dont take his class if you can avoid it, 0/5.
Not lenient with expectations, be ready to be on your p's & q's when taking his courses. When answering questions be very specific.
Let's just start with this, if you do not answer questions in class correctly, he will try to make you feel bad. Does not teach. Makes you read book and videos to teach yourself. DOES NOT TEACH IN CLASS. You have to contribute in class for points. He will ask questions based on small technicalities that no one will understand. DO NOT TAKE.
Wouldn't take ever again. You have to answer at least one CORRECT answer each class to get class points which totals at 10% on final grade. Camera must be on/ good lighting. Never had a professor take off points for not saying "here" fast enough for attendance. He makes you buy a textbook. Lockdown browser for test and gives less than 1 min per q.
Don't take if you're lazy. Come to class having read the assigned chapter and video. He asks everyone a question which counts towards participation. I got 150% in participation from answering multiple questions each class. Tests are like his practice tests/D2L quizzes. Easy if you put in some effort. Very hard if you expect to do nothing.
Rude, didn't teach, no email response. Online, camera on req but you lose points if you don't say here quickly enough. Didn't care about internet issues on campus. You must raise your hand first to answer Q's or you get 0 class points but only ask a few Q's. I had a 69.8% & he would not round up to 70. 1 min per ques on test. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I would rather get beat up by batman than take this class ever again.
He is so trash, he makes you participate in class but if its not the exact answer he is looking for you don't get credit. I can't stand his class please beware.
Just had to drop this professor due to my first and second test grade. I have never withdrawn a course. This professor makes class contribution apart of your grade. I did that and got a 100 overall for participation. Quiz's after every class I had a 93 average. My first test was a 45 and the next one was a 60. Both times I was well prepared &failed
He makes you feel bad if you don't get an answer correctly he would funnily look at you as you're speaking. On the 3rd & 4th quizzes, I got a 48 & 56 and I studied and I was fully prepared. The questions were worded weirdly. He wants you to deliver the answer in his way, his definition, and only his... The world doesn't revolve around you buddy.
If you need a teacher to lecture you, instead of throwing you in the middle of the ocean to find your way… don't take him. Thinks that college students should be able to teach themselves, but don't understand everybody can't learn like that. Wouldn't recommend taking his class at all!
I took this professor's microeconomics class this semester. It started at ~26..ended in like 15. I think many dropped because the class is very workload-heavy (notes & ICA), his teaching style & explaining material was a bit confusing—like using finger raises to count extra credit questions. (Didn't mind) He's chill, old school with paper (T,Q,HW)
Prof Shishkin was great! You can tell he cares about how he teaches and wants his students to do well. He's a bit strict, but if you put in the work and don't fall behind, he's willing to work with you. I don't get why people don't like him. If you're a good student, you should do well. You're also allowed a cheat sheet on the exams, which is nice.
This professor doesnt want you to succeed, he is very bare minimum at his job. He is not understanding. He will post the classwork you have to do in class the day before class and you have to come with your own printout or it's an automatic zero no exception, don't bother asking him questions about your work. He will just respond with condescension
sometimes I think I rather drink bleach then have registered for his class... first day of class first thing he shows us is an email from his past student and how he denied to round her grade up by 0.3 points, and leads to her losing her funding and drops out of college because she couldn't afford it
Smart guy but not a good teacher at all. A lot of the time he just talks as if we know what he is saying and why he is saying it. He does not teach the class but expects us to know.
I personally didnt have any personal issue with him, but he wasnt really helpful. He doesnt rlly answer the question being asked, if anything he kind of giggles which is a little embarrassing. I dont know if those are his intensions or what, but it doesnt rlly make the environment a good place to ask questions. IMO not the best learning environment
I'm wildly surprised by the reviews for this professor. I had him for Microeconomics and he wanted nothing more than to see his class succeed. Numerous opportunities for extra credit, and he'd always answer emails within the day. If you reached out, he was always willing to work with you. Watch the pre-class videos and you'll succeed.
