Dr. Babik is a very nice man, but has extremely difficult tests and provides little to no help preparing you for them. He will answer questions for you about projects, but unless you memorize every page of every chapter, be ready to fail his tests.
He takes attendance but there is little correlation between his lectures and the reading. His tests are based on the reading but he will say things in class which contradicts it and you leave class more confused than ever. The access assignments are super easy. Unclear & must answer his questions exactly the way he wants or you're wrong. Don't take
Dr. Babik is an extremely nice and helpful professor. Really cares about the students and the course content, and wants the best for his students. Passionate about making sure his students master the course. Very knowledgeable, but class can be boring at times.
Awesome guy. Gives great lectures. Class is not difficult and you enjoy learning about the subject. Definitely would take him again.
Dr. Babik is clearly a very smart guy. He integrates his companies grading SaaS (Mobius Slip) into the class structure which is really helpful. Class can get pretty boring because he tries to get everyone to participate in a lecture based course. Overall hes a really cool guy. I'd recommend taking him for 304
great guy
Professor Babik is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. His lecture requires you to think critically and be engaged; if you are not willing to actively listen and learn, then don't waste your time. He is very intelligent and provokes thought. The only thing I disliked about the class was not his teaching, but the peer grading.
He clearly cares about the subject but his class is very confusing. He treats it almost like a philosophy class and calls on people to answer such specific, confusing questions. This class is very class participation oriented which can be frustrating when you haven't learned this section yet! Overall this class isnt terrible but be prepared to talk
Dr. Babik is a great teacher and he really makes learning fun and enjoyable. I think he tries to transform the way professors teach their students (which I appreciate a lot). He also shows how we can take the information that we learn and apply it to jobs outside of the classroom. Would definitely take again for another course and recommend him!
Homework for this class was confusing, useless, and almost never explained. Having to use mobius slip and review 5 other peer submissions as well as your own took way too much time and did absolutely nothing to help us learn. Most of the homework felt like pointless busy work that I would dread and take no pride in every week. Tests were fair.
Don't take his intro level CIS class. COB 204 with him is confusing, he teaches concepts in class and the tests are wicked hard and all textbook. He never answers your questions in class and you can't take his office hours expecting to get answers, he simply questions why you don't know things. He teaches at 300 level, not intro. Don't take!
Dr. Babik is too smart to be a professor. There is a lot of value in coming to class. However, in all honesty, a huge percentage of your grade is based off of the tests and homework assignments. Your class comes up with the test questions. Your homework grades are based off of peer reviews on mobiusslip.
He was a very nice guy, and pretty funny, but his lectures are almost entirely detached from the subject matter, and he's very condescending. From what I've heard, other professors for 204 are a lot better. However, he did give a lot of unnecessary extra credit near the end of the semester, so I ended up with an A without learning anything.
Grades are made by your peers. Students make the test questions & are graded off them as well. Book is boring & confusing, but he does a pretty good job explaining. Expects participation but is sometimes confusing on his questions. Good guy underneath but may have too much on his plate.
I enjoyed going to Professor Babik's class because he was really funny and made fun of some of the kids in class sometimes. He's not super clear on subject matter and you really have to read the textbook to do well on tests but he's very passionate about what he teaches. If you want help he is willing to help. Over all it wasn't too bad.
Nice and easy-going teacher who challenges the students with critical thinking. Should be able to do well if you do all the assignments and the tests are made from the students, so just study the questions that are posted from the discussion board and you should be fine.
His lectures in class are very broad and do not correlate with the reading or what will be on the tests. The Access projects are an easy grade but to do well on the tests you have to read to textbook front to back to pass. You're basically teaching yourself the course and if you ask a question expect to get another confusing question in response.
Dr. Babik made the class much harder than it had to be. He was never clear on what the tests would be on, and offered no guidance. He often makes fun of students if they do not know the answer to his confusing questions, and makes you feel poorly about yourself when you ask questions. If you are in Dr. Babik's class, get ready to work hard.
Mr. Babik is a very intelligant man. Good students will do well in his class if you apply yourself and go to lecture. You have to read the textbook to know whats going on. He is very nice and very helpful if you do your part in trying to receive the help.
He doesn't get the credit he deserves. My class was one of his first at JMU, so we were kind of his test subjects, but he did great. Nothing was ever set, if he began to dislike something he'd change it. Go to office hours. READ the textbook and study it, it will be your best friend. Enjoyed going to class, great man.
Professor Babik is very enthusiastic towards business and entrepreneurship. However, he lets this passion get in the way of the content for COB 204. We rarely had a lecture on the test material. This class is very conceptual and it was difficult to apply these concepts. He made the class harder than it had to be. Also, the textbook sucks.
Babik is very knowledgeable about the subject. His lectures do not entirely coordinate with the test, but if you ask any question about the textbook, you will get a fully explained answer. Quizzes were every few weeks and two questions. His tests were a bit difficult but he has reading guides with the wordy textbook. He's open to suggestions.
If you want to get a decent grade, pick him. If you want to actually learn, he's not the way to go. He lets student grade your assignments so you'll always get full points for homework if you do a decent job, but you'll never know what you did right and what you did wrong.
Babik knows a lot about CIS and although the class was very easy, his lectures had nothing to do with what was on the tests. Very easy to get a good grade. The pop quizzes are easy and nice participation points but do the reading guides or you won't do well on the tests.
Going to class does not help at all but he takes attendance. His lectures are completely pointless and he will go off topic a lot. He is not very clear on what tests will be on. Do not take him if you actually want to learn about 204.
He's helpful when you ask. Class is not mandatory, and you don't learn material for the test in class, but what he lectures on is helpful in life. Tests are mainly definitions from the book. He's kind of funny, and his humor is hard to understand at first, but he grows on you.
No matter what professor you have, you probably won't like this class. Babik did a good job of trying to keep us engaged and entertained, but sometimes his lectures got a little off topic. If you don't memorize the book, you will pretty much fail the final since it's made by the department. Overall, not a bad class. Would probably take him again.
Dmytro is a cool guy! Homework is long but infrequent, and is reviewed by peers. Test questions are mostly generated by the actual students and if you work together you can see them before the exams. Lectures are structured like a conversation, but there are a few times when what we talk about in class directly contradicts the textbook. Pop quizzes
Dmytro is an amazing professor who helps you learn what it takes to be successful inside and outside of the business world. He encourages critical thinking so if you don't like applying yourself he is not the teacher for you. You get out what you put in with his class, so for all who want to learn and learn well he is the guy for you
I took his 204 Summer class and I'm not sure how his teaching style changes for Fall and Spring classes but I genuinely enjoyed going to class. He has a very high sense of humor but also took teaching us seriously. The final was a little harder than I expected but I still got out of the class with an A and can't wait to take another class with him
Great professor! Daily quizzes but they aren't hard if you read the material. Always willing to take questions and explain material in depth. Lots of outside assignments but they aren't difficult. Definitely recommend!
He's a funny guy and good lecturer, but wastes time with random debating. Tests are easy if you listen to what he says in class. Activities were frustratingly ambiguous, but were eventually clarified. Overall, I learned a lot about the subject and how to critically think. Take him if want to understand technology and not just definitions like 204.
One of the rare professors who can actually teach. He's also pretty funny. Class is more fun if people speak up since his class is really discussion based. He teaches you how to think critically. There are kahoots almost every week. He makes this class pretty interesting and I felt like I learned a lot from his class. I recommend taking him.
One of my favorite professors! He explains things very well. Even though he can be a harsh grader, you'll learn to understand what he expects
I learned nothing in this class. All he does is lecture about things that will not be on the test and then when the test comes around you are screwed. All my friends had different professors and they learned way more than I did and got way better grades. Do not take him if you have a choice!!! I'm not sure why people on here are saying he's good
Dr. Babik is clearly interested and knowledgeable about what he is talking about. But, this does not correlate to his exams. The exams are extremely hard and included things we never talk about in class. If it's in the horrible and hard to read book, it's fair game on the test. Get read for a 4-6 question Kahoot at least once a week.
Babik is a solid professor. He has a particular approach to this class: it's almost like a computer philosophy class. He tries very hard to make sure you understand WHY the material makes sense. He doesn't want you just regurgitating information back to him. Honestly, this class is challenging but great preparation for COB 300. Take him
He is a very harsh grader and attendance is mandatory . Class is boring and pointless at times. I would go with another teacher for this course. I absolutely hate going to class
This class in my opinion was boring, I didn't had a lot of prior knowledge to the course material. The tests were hard, and the projects drag. If you go into his office hours to ask questions he likes it, but fails to answer questions. He gets frustrated when no one understands the material even though he gets sidetracked and doesnt explain it
One of the best professors I have had. Class is mandatory but he is a very funny guy and really cares about you learning the material only if you show the effort in wanting to learn it. Would highly recommend if you actually want to learn the material, if you are looking for a free pass I would not bother.
His lectures are very disorganized and all over the place. He asks if anyone has any questions and then that's all he will talk about for a ridiculous amount of time and go off topic a lot. Seems more like he is unprepared and will be lost giving a professional and meaningful lecture for at least half the class without people asking him stuff.
An amazing professor!
Unreasonably hard for this class. Such a tough grader for no reason at all. If you need to take 204 AVOID AT ALL COSTS my friends in other classes had way better grades and learned way more.
Depends on the textbook for you to learn the material for the class. Doesn't come to class with a class plan, depends on you to ask questions but because he doesn't teach, no one is sure where to start with asking questions. Makes you buy a subscription for an online platform for you to grade other people, so that he doesn't have to. AVOID
Intimidating seeming but actually pretty cool guy with a very sarcastic sense of humor. Class isn't mandatory but he gives a Kahoot pretty much every class on the assigned reading. Kahoots are super simple and short but they add up so make sure to attend most classes. Tests are pretty hard so make sure to do the readings and take notes in class.
He's really sarcastic so you may not know how to take him at first but he's amazing and really helpful at his office hours. If you participate and do good on projects, even if you do bad on tests, you'll do fine! Don't listen to all of the other people
He is a good professor. I like the way he allows students to make their own M/C test questions and he will select from them for the exams. He offers extra credits so do it, it will curve your grade at some point. Overall recommend to take him!
Great professor, be ready to keep a work schedule all course. It is an industrious course, SUPER useful.
Dr. Babik can be intimidating at first because he is very well-versed in the subject matter; however, he is very accessible outside class & very willing to help students & make sure they reach their full potential. You should read the textbook for this class but the chapters aren't long so its not a hassle. Dr. Babik is a great choice for COB204!
babik is a pretty funny dude. He gives kahoot quizzes every class so read the chapter before class and you should be fine. The textbook is your best friend, nothing he teaches you is really relevant. Lectures can be boring but if you participate and ask lots of questions he will remember your name and give you extra credit points
Overall, solid professor for entry level class. Expects a solid amount of effort from students in class; and rightfully so, given his expertise in the field he seeks to challenge student's intellect and way of thinking. Class can be very thought provoking depending on your attitude, participation, and expectations.
Babik is a great professor; if you think otherwise it's likely that you don't actually care to learn. This is a rude statement, but it's true. Babik is very knowledgeable, and overall cares about your learning. He strives for actual high-level thinking, unlike other professors who give you participation points.
I took CIS 330, 331, 320, 434 and two additional classes along with his 454 class (7 total). His class is not an unreasonable amount of work, trust me. He helps you learn to think critically and holds you to a high standard. Ive gained knowledge beyond the scope of the class, thanks to him. Its not easy to be an exceptional teacher, but he is.
I took 454 with Babik and I thought I was going to hate it. I heard taking it with 484 would be a nightmare but Babik made it bearable. He genuinely cares about you and how you do, and he knows what he's talking about. Sometimes some things are confusing, but he will always clarify if you ask. Highly recommend taking him, I loved his class.
Eh. He loves when people come to his office and asks questions and reflects that in class by playing favorites. In terms of the class, structure is a little odd. He does care for students, however he always has to go above and beyond to never give a straight "yes or no". Dreaded going to class every day and it didn't help it was my last one.
Professor Babik get a bad rep- that he's very harsh and not an easy professor. The way he teaches is to give you a baseline of how to do something (like a model) and to go through trial and error. There is no right answer!! He is truthfully one of my favorite professors and brings some good laughs to class. Ignore what you've heard- he's great :-)
First off, Babik is not for everyone. This is my second time taking him so I knew what to expect. Babik will challenge you and make you think. he will also put you on the spot and grade you very tough. If you want an easy class do not take this class. If you want to learn, grow, and be challenged everyday take this class.
Ignore what you've heard he's great! He really cares about the students. There are 6 modeling assignments and if you don't know how to do them just go to his office hours he is very helpful. There are 3 tests which are pretty straight forward just read the book and you will be fine.
I did not enjoy Professor Babik's class during the lectures. I found it difficult to pay attention sometimes. However, I feel like I've truly learned so much from his class from assignments. We practiced topics a lot in class which really helped me learn them. Also, he started off the class by providing us with super useful info about resumes.
Took his online maymester class. Living hell. He was completely hands-off. Didn't teach AT ALL. Assignment instruction were extremely confusing and left out key information. He said that was intentional. Regularly got points taken off for not modeling things that were not taught. He feedback is obnoxious. "What's this? Why? I don't understand.."
Fantastic professor! Provides great feedback and is very accessible. He doesn't regurgitate textbooks or readings. He provides lots of opportunities for learning outside of class. He uses class time to focus on talking with the students and answering questions
Babik is a great professor and you learn a lot from him if you show up to class and go to office hours. Anyone that doesn't like Babik is most likely just lazy and doesn't want to put in any work. Work load is normal nothing too difficult and Babik is very funny. Really enjoyed his class!
Dr. Babik is a great professor and is funny when lecturing. Some people think he's mean but they're not realizing that he's only trying to make you better. He is one of the few professors that I've come across who has made me care and put my best efforts into every assignment and exams. Take him with an open mind and you will not regret it!
Dr. Babik expects you to work hard and put a lot of thought into your assignments, but he returns the same level of consideration through his teaching. He clearly loves his job, has a great sense of humor, and truly wants to see us succeed and grow. Yes, he's tough, but he does it to make us better. Complainers should find a different career path.
Professor Babik is one of those teachers that, even if you do an outstanding job in your work, he will find things to criticize and make you question. The first time this happens can be offsetting, but eventually you realize he is not just being cruel for the sake of it, but rather to make a lasting impact. I learned very well as a result.
Prof. Babik is a good professor. His classes are mostly just discussion, so you had to do a good bit of studying on your own for the tests. He grades the homework assignments extremely strictly, but also clearly tells you what he wants upfront. 304 isn't the easiest class, but I certainly can say I learned thanks to Babik.
The projects and assignments done helped you grasped the concept with fair grading and suggestions made. Babik's humor was funny without him seemingly trying to be. Be prepared to be ripped apart in class for stupid questions, though, I enjoyed when he did because it was obvious he wanted you to learn from your mistakes.
Dr Babik is tough. Really tough. However, you will leave his class with a whole new perspective. I have never learned more in a class and I truly feel prepared for my job after graduation.
He will likely scare you on day one but as long as you stay ontop of assignments, ask a multitude of questions, and go to class you should be fine. He's a funny dude and makes his lectures pretty interesting as well.
Tough grader. He rarely gives out 100's on assignments because he does not view any work as "perfect." He is very condescending in office hours and gives little information to help better understand the material. Tests are hard. He takes his information off of wikipedia, then denounces wikipedia as a source of information. Would avoid immediately.
Dr. Babik is a demanding professor but as long as you stay on top of your assignments and come to class you'll be okay. There is no set textbook, instead wikipedia articles but overall convey same message. It's important to ask questions about the assignments before getting too deep into them. This class will make sure you understand the content.
Dmytro was amazing. If you don't understand anything, he is very helpful and will calmly give you the correct answer neatly and concisely. Amazing choice of wardrobe every day. The one thing is that he doesn't tolerate any profanity in his class. But, overall, very caring professor who teaches every topic thoroughly in class.
As much as I want to hate on Babik for being a PITA I just can't. He is always willing to help his students in class and in office hours, always comes into lectures passionate about teaching, and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. Great teacher.
If you want an easy class don't take him. But if you actually want to learn and become a more intelligent, curious, hardworking person, there's no one better than Babik. He can be mean and might hurt your feelings if you let him, but if you commit to the class he will literally make you smarter; he teaches you how to learn at a very high level.
Class is curved to roughly C+/B- range, textbook is not used, just online readings. However, there is no real alternative and you have a 50/50 chance of getting online exams, which is good.
If you don't like talking in class, don't take his class. He wants you to ask questions in class, but when you do, he'll make you feel dumb for asking it. He expects us to memorize everything he says and gets mad when you don't. He's a great person to talk to, but he can be mean.
He does the flipped classroom so it is all readings you do outside of class and use them for in class kahoots and the tests. Tests are done at home online. I honestly think he would rather catch kids cheating than teach the material. He accused me of cheating multiple times even though I never did. Entire grade is projects with vague instructions.
He has the knowledge but cannot convey it well because he doesn't understand how to treat a student respectfully. His snide remarks were not useful and often shut down discussion. He could be insightful but his personality made it almost impossible to learn. There's no final but you have to teach yourself all the content.
Easily the worst professor I've ever taken. He had a very weird obsession with the concept of starting salaries. He would tell students that they don't deserve a 85k starting salary if they couldn't answer his weird questions. Little does he know, I'll be making over 6 figures if I accept my job offer. Also gives the worst resume advice.
Mixing Babik & a flipped classroom is like trying to mix water & oil. The flipped classroom exists for discussions about the content, but a combination of his lack of respect for students & vague answers to questions makes having discussions very difficult. He alludes to reading these reviews but clearly hasn't taken them seriously.
Very tough grader and is quoted saying if you can get a perfect grade on a graph then I'm grading it wrong.
Very unclear about assignment instructions. Grades like we are professionals and should know everything about the subject. Impossible to learn when you will literally fail if you make any mistakes whatsoever.
He plays favorites, if he doesn't like you, god have mercy. I have never had a professor who was so egotistical, the actual content in the course isn't that hard, it's just the way he grades. It's like an art class with a professor who wants everything to be done exactly how he thinks & if you deviate from that, he will arbitrarily fail you.
Works against you not for you. Answers questions with more questions because he feels like "Aristotle." Will never give out an A. Does not lecture.
Babik is a really intelligent professor that can help students learn the material well if you try. Asking questions in class and in office hours is how you get an A in this class. People rating bad were either too lazy in his class or didn't listen to his advice. If you get out of your comfort zone and fail a couple times, YOU WILL SUCCEED.
He is making oral exams next semester, from what I have heard. But that will be the least of your worries.
