Strong Accent, But very good Instructor. If you like History, she is one to tak
Very hard to follow, i am a history major with a 3.8 and i am lost
Im very good at history and FAILING this class!!!!!!
She is very degrating to her students and very hard to follow.

Tests are NOT hard, just a lot of content to learn
Seems more interested in teaching than testing...talks to the end every time
The most in depth professor I've ever had, simply amazing passion for the French
i can not understand her, she likes to ramble about pointless info.
Had a hard time getting the stuff, but boy is she cute for an East European!
If I could understand her I would probably be doing a little better. Oh well, the communist plot has finally come.
she talks about useless info and is very hard to understand
She speaks very broken english. Hard to understand. I love the french revolution, but she made it the dullest and boringest period of all time. Its like learning the romantic period.

Not only do I wish I would have dropped for a full refund, but also for the approximately 2400 minutes of my life she wasted. Do yourself a favor, do not take this class. (I personally counted each minute that went by in the class)
Her English is very hard to understand. Sometimes it seems as if she is speaking in a foreign language!
Avoid this prof. Not the worst i've had, but not very nice and very boring.

she is a **** and dosent help you out even if you ask. the class is such a ****ing drag. dont take this class

I hated this class and is it just me, or does she semi remind you of Hitler??? definitely a waste of time and money, and I regret taking it. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS AND THIS PROF.
Doesn't explain setup of quizes beforehand, be prepared. I read the text, went to class and did all assignments, but she has a very heavy accent. I got a D- overall even though I worked very hard. Try to avoid her at all costs. Good class, bad teacher.
Hard to understand at times because of Romanian accent. If you go to class you will do well in the class. She tells you exactally what to expect on writings and quizzes are over what is talked about in class and in the book.
Awful Teacher, Doesnt understand the students, stay away from at all costs
class was easy if you went, easy grading on papers.
DR. Harsanyi when given the chance, is an amazing educator. Although many people have problems in her class if they would just take the time to learn from her the class is very enjoyable!
She has a very heavy accent. Doesn't understand english, carries on too much. Can be very ***chy, don't get caught sleeping or doodling. Don't miss classes. Could be fun class, but the prof is bad.
She doesnt believe that 50% of us should be in college when she is the one we can't understand. the class was really cool when Ebel taught it but at the middle of semester when she took over it was all down hill and so went the grades. AVOIDE HER!!!!!
Took over last 2/3 of class after Dr. Ebel. You can't understand her, she rambles and is impossible to take notes from. If it weren't for the fact that she started taking role, I would have walked out. She treats us like we're stupid and is beyond rude.
Dr. Harsayni is a wonderful professor. Granted she is hard to understand, but she is passionate about her subject. She only wants her students to walk out of class with an understanding of European History. We are in college and she treats us like we are.
class was easy, but final was not. i have never felt so unprepared by a teacher in my life. hard to understand. only teacher who held an afternoon class the day before thanksgiving and made sure to teach us lots of test material that day. AVOID HER!!!!!!
She is a bad teacher. Instead of puting the notes up in the lecture she puts up art and you dont know what it is because you cant understand anything she says. She also stops class to complain and yell at you if you walk in one minute late.
So hard to understand this B@$ch...she doesn't help you and this class was a waste of my time..ebel was cool but i might have to retake the class because of her...and i LOVE history
She is very knowledgable in her subject area. She has an accent, but if you're open-minded and patient, it shouldn't be a problem. She expects students to act like adults; some might have difficulty in that area.
Dr. Harsanyi is an intelligent, experienced teacher. Yes, she has an accent. However, my main complaint with her class was the environment she presented--a large lecture classroom with dim lighting. Take this course as a HST major--it's tough
Her accent is not that bad, talks about art a lot. The tests are ridiculously hard. I recall writing 4 pages for an exam essay and she said I did not write enough.
the devil incarnate
dr. harsanyi is a great teacher, she is one of my favorite at cmu. i have taken certain history courses just because she is teaching them. she is a fair grader, and her accent is not bad, maybe people should learn to listen a little better
Her accent is so hard to understand. she jumps around in the material. Very boring.

Is an evil, evil woman. Has a horrible accent and will yell at you if you take notes. "They're on reserve at the library! Pay attention!" The class is impossible, I'd avoid her at all costs.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I could only understand 1 out of 5 words out of her mouth.
She is impossible to understand. Impossible. Impossible.... Did I say impossible.
whoa, remind me why i pay money for this kind of instruction. CMU is a sad establishment
Whats the deal with you idiots? She grew up in Romania, studied in France. Her accent, I think, is actually very nice and I can comprehend it without a problem. She is very friendly. I bet she wasn't too bad looking in her younger days. **** you, purp
She is better than Ebel
2nd half of Ebel. HARD TO UNDERSTAND. Please do not take this class! My discussion leader saved my rear because she was sympathetic. Oh my I will never take a class of western civ, let alone with these two again!
She is an absolutely horrible teacher. jumps around in her material. doesnt convey information well at all!!!
She is very nice and always willing to help out should you need it. Plus she loves what she teaches and that makes things a lot more interesting.
Cant speak english.
Not a nice lady. Will not let you take notes. Has a monopoly on HST 101. Failed her class once, want to take it again but definitely wont as long as she's the only teacher. Stay away from her unless you love getting E's. First teacher to ever fail me.
She has a beautiful accent. She knows her material. However, she will push students to perform at a university level. Not a course to take if you cannot function at the college level, or if you are looking for for an easy A. If you can do the work, you will find this to be a very rewarding course.
My God how horrible! Honestly the worst teacher I've EVER had. It took me till the end of October to even understand her version of english. She jumps around on the notes and always refers to students as "high schoolers" because someone might talk a little. Terrible Class, Students Beware!
What?!!! I see nothing wrong with her. If you are too lazy to read or pay attention, too bad for you because she knows her stuff and will help if you ask it. expand your ignorant horizons by trying to understand someone different from you.
The only problem I have with this class is that I have trouble understanding her sometimes.
I would not reccomend her. Be aware you have to basically teach yourself, unless you have an interpretor with you. Worst teacher i have ever had in four years here. Avoid if possible!!
Very insightful
I have no problem with her accent, I think it's lovely. She's very helpful, and if you're struggling in the class, she's always willing to give you extra credit. The TA's are entertaining as well. She loves and has a passion for history. If you go to class and do the reading, easy A.
It's impossible to understand anything she says; I stopped going to lectures because I wasn't getting anything out of them. She also has a thing where she won't take having a court date (like for an MIP or DUI) as a legitimate excuse to miss class (not that she takes attendance).
I admit this class totally sucked. I'm a history major and it's definitely the hardest one I've ever had! She has a very old-fashioned way of teaching and is very hard to understand. However, she will help you with extra credit if you're struggling and your discussion section could help your grade.
Doesnt speak-a-english well and makes you want to take a nap, dont take her
Dr. Harsanyi speaks English wonderfully, and with an attractive accent. I do, however, wonder how many languages her detractors below have mastered. She has great passion for her subject and is among the best lecturers I have had at CMU. Take her class, unless you are closed-minded and lazy.
Dr. Harsanyi, has alot of passion in this class. She is very knowledgeable, and she shows it. Interesting lectures, but you have to make sure that you are very interested in what she has to say, if not, than she has a very beautiful voice to sleep to. :)
i went to class everyday didn't learn a thing, kissed my good GPA goodbye
No Comments
Couldnt understand a damn word she said
Harsanyi knows her stuff and as long as you sit in the front and pay close attention. Most of these reviews were probably written by nonhistory majors and the class was only taken for UP credit, making their reviews irrelevant. If you're a history major and didnt like this class, try something else.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. I AM NOT KIDDING. SHE KNOWS HER STUFF, BUT D*** IT... YOU WILL NOT RECOGNIZE A SINGLE WORD SHE SAYS. She has about twenty different accents melted into one. She's nice. BUT FOR YOUR GPA's SAKE... DON'T TAKE HER. Whoever hired her is a moron and should be fired.
Poor English - bring a translator
Gets mad when you don't attend lecture. Starts giving exam answers to reward you for going. Going to interact with your TA way more than her.
I don't see what everyone's problem is with Dr. Harsanyi. I think she is an excellent teacher. If you aren't ignorant and are actually trying to listen to her, you can understand her fairly easily. She's very passionate about her subject, and the readings for the class were easy, and interesting.
SHE WAS THE WORST TEACHER I have ever had! He class is huge and if you get stuck in the back you have NO idea what she is talking about!! DO NOT TAKE HER
This teacher should no longer teach history. She knows her stuff, and is very into what she teaches, but its very hard to understand her, and there isn't any type of study guide or help guide to let you know what the crap you're supposed to be getting out of this. Please, don't take this class!
This teacher is very enthusiastic about the subject, but sometimes when she starts talking really fast you have to listen very closely to understand her. You will spend a lot of time with your TA. The tests are half essay and half multiple choise. The multiple choise questions are very hard!
She's impossible to understand, you gotta sit real close to the front and her notes don't really make any sense. The outlines don't really clarify things. PEACE ****S!!!!
She jumps around a bit in lectures which makes it hard to follow sometimes, but she's super helpful. Her accent is easy to understand if you bother to try to listen, and so far the tests are really easy. Plus she offers extra credit which helps
She has an accent that put me to sleep the first couple classes but after a little while i got an ear for what she was saying. she is very passionate and repeats things that are important. i really like the readings she assigned, the discissions were great. her tests aren't the greatest but i didnt study and i got a B+ ont he last one.
The material was very interesting, but her accent makes it really hard to learn. She was very unhelpful when you try to talk to her and unapproachable. I found her kind of rude and she didn't seem to care if you were learning the material.
She is hard to understand at times but you can understand her if you listen. Discussion helps a lot especially if you read it. She'll help you if you need it. Go to lecture and take notes and go to discussion. She's not that bad and very passionate. Not easy but study you'll be fine.
she's insane!! definitley knows what she's talking about, if you listen closely, you can understand the class pretty easily. tests are not too hard, just take good notes! i must say i love her outfits and the HUGE glasses she always comes into the room with!!
terribly hard to understand, you read a ton of books, but exams aren't hard if you can make sense of the material
Difficult to understand. Make sure you have a good discussion instructor.
Worst Teacher I have Ever Had!!!
She has a strong accent and is very difficult to understand. i almost feel asleep in her class most days. She offers several oppertunities for extra credit and there is homework due every week.
Just don't take her!!!
Very easy. Clear lectures, easy tests, very helpful in office hours, and offers plenty of extra credit. You'd have to try to do badly in this course.
This lady does not speak english very well at all. She also talks about things at times that are no where close to what she has up as far as notes go. Your T.A is really the one who runs your stuff. If you go to your discussion all the time and go to your TA's exam review there really is no reason to go to class.
She's a bit different as far as professors go but she has a huge interest in her subject and conveys that really well. If you pay attention and take good notes you will do more than fine in this class. If you have no interest in history whatsoever, then you may not enjoy it, but the material is interesting either way if you give it a chance.
She's nice, knowledgable but her problem is that her accent is very thick and that can make her hard to understand at times. If you are into Enlightenment era or the French Revolution I would recommend her.
She has an accent, but i find that sitting in the front can mean the difference between being completely interested and falling asleep. she is so passionate, and thats great. the additional materials were awesome, and i hate reading.
Dr. Harsanyi is a wonderful teacher, but you shouldn't take one of her classes if you are lazy. She expects you to perform at a University level. Her accent is not at all hard to understand, and she has a vast amount of knowledge on all subjects. If you want to learn, you will love her.
Shes hard to understand and the class was boring. A lot of reading too
very unclear material, couldnt understand accent, extremely hard exams
IN all... yes she has an accent which can be hard to understand sometimes, sit near the front, pay attention, and take lots of notes and you'll do fine. Shes really not that bad, not the best, but def not the worst either
She really is an amazing professor. Yes, she does have an accent but it is not that bad and very easy to get used to. Besides that she probably speaks better english than I do. She makes the subject very intersting and easy to understand. You do have to go to class. She is extremely intelligent and really knows what she is talking about.
She's so smart! I learned a ton from her. She's very helpful, friendly, and passionate about the material. She really challenges you!
I cannot stress how terrible this teacher is. I am a 5th-year history major and nearly had to retake this class. She should be out of a job.
Dr. Harsanyi is very difficult to understand. She is intelligent and can be fun, but her accent and course material made me not want to go to class. Overall, I got a C+ and put in minimal effort-not bad in that dept.
Easy class, easy A.
She would not shut up!! She kept us in class from 8:30 to 4:30 with two 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. She did not give any instruction on the papers we had to write. We had to buy books that we never had to use. She loves her topic but she would talk the entire time if you let her. I'm in class now and I want to die!!
Wow! After just 2 days I've had enough! She literally talked nonstop for almost 6 hours, would not answer questions if they broke the chronology of the time period and shushed people like children if they were answering questions for one another. Too bad for the visual learner!
She is sometimes hard to understand but is very enthusiastic. She is always willing to help. Very easy grader.
She is a very nice lady, but her class can be boring and her accent often hard to understand. But I found it to be an easy class. Wrote a couple papers, attendance points, and the final exam was a take home paper. Easy A if you are a good paper writer. Just used textbooks to write my papers.
I have to give it up to a hst prof. that can stand up and teach a class without poping in a movie. She knows her stuff. Shes a really nice person. Shes not that hard of a grader, I got an A-. She didn?t make us take any tests, unless we wanted to, however no tests made coming to class kind of pointless as i could just look info up to write papers.
Doina is awesome. she cares about this stuff and teaches it well. She is so helpful about everything. Take a class with her if you get a chance!
Lectures were sometimes hard to follow, but the material was interesting. She is a very nice person and can be funny at times. Our only grades are papers. I got B's on all of the papers but she curved our grades at the end. Participation is worth 15% and she does take attendance, so make sure you go to class!
I took this as a UP course. I didn't read any of the reading from the 5 books throughout the semester, and didn't say one word in class and ended up with a B. Just do well on the papers and you'll be set. The class is a lecture for the entire period, so even if you try to pay attention you find yourself daydreaming. Boring class unless you love HST
I do not recommend Harsanyi as a professor at all. She can be difficult to understand, she is disorganized, and the topic of the class was painful and misleading from its written description. I'll never take a class with her again.
Dr. Harsanyi is very passionate about her field, and that makes her a joy to listen to during lecture. She holds a very strong opinion that final exams do not properly display a student's ability, and has term papers instead. Just come to class, participate from time to time, take notes, and you'll thrive.
By far the best professor I have had at CMU, she is truly passionate about what she teaches, and friendly. If you aren't into history you will probably struggle at times, but if you enjoy it then this is the class for you. Highly recommended.
Excellent Teacher, and yes, she expects a lot out of her students....but isn't that what college is for?
Harsanyi was an excellent teacher. I felt the lectures were highly informative. There were only 4 assignments all year and the tests were fairly easy. I highly recommend in order to learn without it being a burden.
One of the easiest classes I've taken at CMU. Also one of the most boring classes I've taken at CMU. Attendance is mandatory, do not show up late. She does not stop talking for the entire class period. Very easy assignments, very easy grader. She is extremely intelligent, but her accent can be difficult to understand.
Hasanyi is one of the most passionate professors I've had at CMU. She knows her field very well and loves discussing it with her students. The class has no final exam and your grade is mostly essay based. If you have interest in history, she is a good professor to take. She also has a very thick French accent that takes some getting used to.
This is one of the best classes I have had a CMU, although I can understand why some people don't like her style. I don't have a problem understanding her accent, so that was not a problem for me. She is very passionate about the subject, and made lectures usually very interesting. If you don't like discussions this is probably not a class for you.
Excellent lecturer and passionate about what she's teaching. She is very helpful, just communicate with her and she can be flexible. Grades are based almost entirely on written essays. 15% of the grade is going to class and participating in discussion! This class is more for history majors and those who want to learn French history.
Awful, disorganized, and at times disrespectful. Dr Harsanyiis knowledgable in her feild but she is difficult to understand, very unclear about expecations and comes off as an elitist.
HST 102WI - Western Civ 1700- Present. It was a pretty easy class and Dr. Harsanyi will sometimes bring in guest lecturers. It's a pretty good class to take if you're trying to get into the swing of taking notes, but you should know that she has an accent that might be difficult for some people to get used too. I loved the class.
She expects you to read over 100 pages, and then discuss specific details about the readings. She is unclear when she assigns homework. She is a nice lady, but expects a lot while people have other classes.
Dr. Harsanyi is a really nice lady and professor. Almost all of her lecture outlines can be found online, but I highly recommend going to class as she definitely expands on the basic ideas. Her accent is really, really strong, but you get used to it pretty quickly. She's really friendly and willing to help if you take the time to visit her office.
Professor Harsanyi's lectures get quite off track and don't follow the outline. Attendance for the lectures is not required but it is in your once a week discussion group taught by one of the GA's (2 hr lecture, 1 hour discussion). The GA taught me everything I learned. One page papers maybe once every other week and I never used my book.
Very laid back and informative lecture. If her accent is difficult to understand, give it a few lectures and sit closer to the front. I emailed her about a question and she got back to me quickly and set up an appointment. She is very enthusiastic! The grad assistants were very helpful and explained the more complex ideas of the class pretty well.
The class was really strange and abstract, but ultimately was pretty easy and interesting. The professor does have an accent that can make it difficult to understand, especially in the big lecture hall. However, if you do the reading you don't really even need to go to class.
I despised this class and it was all Dr. Harsanyi's fault. I understand the transition to online is hard but she did not make it any easier. She stands in front of the class and rambles without a powerpoint for 2 hours and it makes no sense. We were graded on several group assignments and basically nothing else. Take anyone else that you can.
I have taken a plethora of other history courses, some of which were purely online. I have never experienced such a lack of organization, unclear grading instructions, and outright incompetence as I have dealt with under the tutelage of Dr. Harsanyi. Her class is not conventionally hard but she makes it an absolute chore. Avoid at all costs!
This class was useless. I learned not a thing and the entire class was graded on a 100 point scale, so if you miss an assignment or if your group presentation members are not as committed to the project as you are, you're screwed. I got to a point where I just didn't go anymore because the class was just her using vague powerpoints and rambling.
All she does is talk
Dr. Harsanyi is a very nice lady. Her accent is a little tough at first but you get used to it after a bit. I'm gonna be honest, I didn't like her class at first and ended up skipping for a couple weeks but then everything changed about her. Very easy class, she doesn't ask for much of you overall, just a few analysis papers a couple pages long.
Dr Harsanyi is a very kind woman and will give you extensions if you have a valid reason. However, her lectures are quite drawn out and hard to follow, often I had no clue what was going on in the class. She does not remind you when assignments are due to keep up with the syllabus. I wouldn't avoid her class, but on my own accord wouldnt take again
Dr. Harsanyi has been nothing but a delight to work with. She certainly assigns lots to read, and on paper she may be a bit unclear about what she wants for your assignments, but just come up and ask her. She's also super nice and is willing to work with you and give you extensions provided you have a good reason. Show up and be prepared to listen!
Dr. Harsanyi is the sweetest and so funny. Her classes are mostly lectures and she does assign a decent amount of reading but it's typically reading you skim through or find summaries to online. She is also flexible with due dates usually and is very good at working with you. I would recommend taking one of her classes for sure :)
Professor Harsanyi's class can take some getting used to, but it's a relatively easy A if you engage with the material. The lectures are informative, and resources like Unstuckstudy can really help with study prep. Overall, a solid class option.
Dr. Harsanyi is kind, passionate, and dedicated. While she has an accent, you'll quickly get adapted. The class is graded on 1 term paper, 3 reading notes, and a final paper. It's manageable if you attend, participate, and take notes. Her grading is fair, and she gives great feedback. The only downside is that the PowerPoints only have pictures.
Dr. Harsanyi is a very nice lady. She is very passionate about French History, but lectures can be a bit boring and disorganized at times. She is extremely flexible with deadlines. Little work outside of class, however since there are so few assignments, there isn't much room for error. She is a fair grader and a pretty good professor overall.
very nice lady! lectures are extremely boring & long (powerpoints not much help at all). attendance plays little role in final grade.
