She's very clear and writes excellent tests. Very approachable and friendly. The course material is kind of boring, but not too much work so it's no big deal. The biggest part of the course is a research paper, but it's so spread out it's no sweat.
She is an excellent professor. She will help you whenever you have a question. You need to read the textbook and take good lecture notes to get a good grade in the class. The research project is pretty time consuming but not too bad. Everyone tried to scare me about "Mullin's tests" but if you study and apply yourself you will do fine!
Mullin is great. Even though the material can be a bit dull at times she knows how to spice it up with anecdotes, movie clips, jokes and student participation. I learned a lot in this class and i recommend it to anyone somewhat interested in the field.
Non of these lower division classes were easy! She is an awesome person and is very helpful. She will go out of her way for you, but don't be fooled by her- SHE IS A HARD PROF and anyone who says she is easy is wrong! Not only do you have to read all the material you have to take excellent notes. I worked my ass off and the best I did was an A-!!!
She's a good lecturer. Her slides are well outlined and easy to understand. Also, she uses a lot of examples and anecdotes to make the lecture more interesting and the materials to be more understandable. But you need to put a lot of effort to actually do well. Detailed notes and office hours would be helpful.
Great teacher and super nice; really connects with her students and is eager to help one-on-one. No, her classes are not easy, but they shouldn't be (this is university level, remember?). Mullin requires more than simple memorization to succeed in her classes, which ultimately leads to a more rewarding learning experience. I really enjoyed her!
Her tests are HORRIBLE...get ready for tricky questions designed to test your memorization skills!
Her test are way difficult... I dont understand why teachers try to trick you when in the real word people dont trick you then tell you straight forward what kind of experiment/research they are doing!!!

I thought her lectures were interesting - esp. given the content - and she was funny. I went to class, paid attention, and participated and did well. She does try to trick you on tests, though.
Great lecturer because her power points are very clear and organized. However, on the tests she will try her hardest to trick you. You think all multiple choice is easy until you get to her class. But as a teacher she is very clear and helpful
Her powerpoint and lectures are great, BUT her multiple choice test are a KILLER. Be ready to know your stuff left and right, front and back in order to do well.

She is very nice and has well outlined powerpoints. Easy to follow and very informative. She uses lots of examples and WRITE THEM DOWN...they are not the same on the exam, but similar structure. She IS hard, but she's supposed to be...it is a pre-comm class so you have to weed out the pretenders.
She is the reason I switched majors, and for that, I am grateful. Her tests are ridiculous. Multiple choice, all choices correct, but "one is more correct"...****. It does not matter whether or not you know the material. Just pick whateve
she is a very nice professor and is willing to give extra help outside the classroom if needed. she is difficult but you end up learning a ton.
Her test are beyond ridiculous. Every question seems to have multiple answers. I hated every second of her classes. I imagine her & her husband sit around the kitchen table & think up ways to punish their students through ridiculously difficult exams.
really easy to follow pwr point slides. i wrote down all her little stories which helped me remeber things for the test. the test are extremely difficult though. you have to know your****. its not the easy class it seems like. some of the TA's are harsh on the papers and projects too.
dolly is a great person who is willing to help. her tests are hard as hell and so are her papers. multiple choice means multiple answers also, so you have to know every detail and that makes studying hard. lectures were boring, and damn those tests are hard
I had her a few years ago but I remember half of the lectures being about her personal life which I could give a rat's ass about. The other half was just boring. I HATED this class. The tests are riduculous. The material is very easy but she tries to fool you with tricky multiple choice questions. Her class involves little critical thinking skills. Mostly it is just regurgiation of boring jargon. However, if you hang on, some of the upper division classes are very interesting and valuable.
Run while you can ... the reason I left the major and yet I work in PR and marketing even without a comm degree
mullin is one of the best professors i've had at UCSB! Her lectures are all easy to follow (great powerpoint) and interesting. She shows movie and tv show clips to illustrate her points. If you take detailed noted in class you will do just fine on the midterm/final. :)
her lectures are kind of boring, but so is the material so it's not really her fault. she does try to spice them up, but it really is a hopeless cause. the tests aren't bad as long as you are willing to study and understand concepts.
I came here as a Communication major in the Fall of '04. Boy was I happy to be accepted at UCSB. Then I took Comm classes w/Dolly. I left the major and am now a Sociology major, I'll never go back. Mullin has a monopoly on the Comm classes and the lectures/tests are all the same. Live freely! Don't major in Comm!
I decided to major in Comm because of this class. Lecture was very interesting and tests were fair. Mullin is great and helpful! Go to class and take good notes!
shes my role model!! great professor!!!
This class was OK. Mullin is very striaght forward in her lectures but the tests are kinda tricky and you have to be pretty prepared. Lecture sucked and was pretty boring but if you like everything outlined on power point this class is for you.
Great teacher, really outgoing and optimistic. Understanding to students personal needs, and overall just one of the better teachers here.
This is one of the worst classes at UCSB. The material is worthless. She makes her lectures clear and simple but manipulates and complicates everything from lecture so the midterm and final kill you. People who have considered being Comm majors drop change their minds becuase of this class. The material is easy--the tests are hard.
I don't quite get what everyone is saying about her tests being difficult. If your do the reading and go to lecture it's all there. Straightforward multiple choice tests with two straight forward papers. She is lively at 8am which keeps you awake.
She is an amazing professor and you can get really into her lectures...her tests are hard but do the reading and study the lecture notes and you will do fine...i definently reccommend her as a professor!
MULLIN is a GREAT PROFESSOR no matter how much people hate on her. yes, her tests are KILLER but if you really want to get in the major then you should study your butt off and you'll be fine. dont hate her cause you didnt study or blame her tests by saying shes tricky. she really isnt. she just wants to make sure you know your stuff.
awesome prof, her lectures always kept me awake and were entertaining. if you take good notes and keep up with the reading, you will be fine. you should really only take the class if u are interested in being a comm major b/c it can be challenging if ur not interested in the subject
looks can be deceiving. that is certainly what i had hoped for. however that is not the case with the haggard mullin, a mangled beast at first sight and a true demon at heart. if taught by another, lectures COULD be over in 20 minutes, but mullin loves to lacerate people's souls with inapropos material and maul their ears with her enfeebled squeals
Prof Mullin's class was THE most boring class that I've had. She tries to be as tricky as possible on her tests. All questions are multiple choice & for EVERY question there's a curve ball that could possibly be right. Lectures could have been completed in half an hour if she didnt BS so much. Hard to get a good grade even if you know the material
If you had a hard time with her in pre-comm, be careful. She tests the same and the q's are just as confusing. But, if you know the material front and back and read, then I guess you would do ok. Lectures are easy to follow, and kinda interesting and 2 papers, that are ok. Beware of the q's that ask a... b... c... a or c.... c or b. They can kill!
I will admitt Mullin is nice, a good teacher, and tries to make the class fun. However, her tests are very hard and tricky. Dont listen to the students who say they aren't, it's bull. It is a multiple chose test but she gives options like A&B, A&C, none of the above, all of the above: all in the same question!!! ahhhhhhhhh!
Professor Dolly Mullin basically tests you based on her lectures. Basically, if you go to her lecture everyday and do the work, you pretty much get the course material of the class. She also a great communicator. Her examples in class are funny and very memorable, making it easier to remember during midterms or finals.
class was wayyyyyy more difficult than i expected. class is graded on a bell curve meaning only a certain percentage of students can get a. screws a lot of people over. overall, really good lecturer and classes aren't completely boring but tests were hard. made me change my major out of comm.
Mullin could not be more clear in her lectures. She is the most straightforward prof I have had in my 3 years here. Tests are a breeze of you go to lecture and read. People keep saying that her tests are tricky with answer choices like "a&c" but if you went to lecture and read they weren't tricky at all cause you knew it. Very fair and easy tests.
ive had her for 3 classes, and after all that decided to drop the major because i just cant stand one more class with her. must attend all lectures, which is an ok way to teach, but is completely unhelpful and unsympathetic if you are unable to attend one (for ANY reason, including having to be in the hospital). if you miss class youre out of luc
Lectures are clear, professor explains everything well. The necessary part is going to lectures, if you do, Midterm and Final will seem easy.
Her lectures were clear and helpful... but i had a bad expierences because of a t.a. but Prof. Mullin was really nice and easy to get help from....
Material seems to be really easy and I thought I did well after the midterm but wow, I was wrong. No matter how much you know the material, those 'all of the above' and 'a & c' questions are KILLER. I went to every lecture and did the readings, but when those tests came around it felt like I hadn't learned anything at all. Really nice lady though.

Dolly has been around for a long time, therefore she knows her stuff. She is funny and interesting, but you have to go to lecture. Her tests are not hard if you study right. She gives you sample questions, study as if you were answering things like that. You cannot study like you would for any other class. Study right, and this class is a breeze.
She is one of the best professors at ucsb!! Her lectures are often fun and interesting, and exams are based on them, so do go. It is a hard class n you really have to know your stuff to do well on exams. The paper grading system (the curve) makes it increadibly hard to get something above B. But its a cool class tho ;)
Mullin is amazing, and more amazing when you go to her office hours. However, beware of the test, it doable, just tricky: test example: a) right answer b) right answer but not really) c) kind of wrong answer d) a and b e) all of the above.
Great speaker, mostly interesting lectures. Kind of funny but her humor fades. Everyone says its a hard class but if you study and do well on the papers its not.
Class sections are not mandatory however if you do not attend you fail. Her class was not"fun"as someone said prior. Her lectures are clear and well organized. The exams were VERY difficult. I studied hard and did awful on the Midterm and Final as did all of my friends. Her exams are long and drawn out. ?'s were way/too long. I did NOT enjoy thic cl
I have taken two classes with her so far (comm 1 and comm 89). did great and both and i enjoyed them as well. Her lectures are easy to takes notes from, and my notes are always organized. She uses a lot of video and tv snippets which are always a nice break from class. Overall, I really enjoyed both her and the class
I love her! she is funny, easy to listen to, entertaining, and makes everything clear. All you have to do is go to class, skim the book, and study your notes. Her clips of south park and advertisements are great breaks from class!! She is so sweet!
mullins a quirky energetic prof. lectures are organized so notes are easily taken. DO take detailed notes because u must learn to apply the concepts during exams. sections & ta arent helpful / neccessary for the most part, but u get docked for not going =( do NOT get stuck with ta k. pearce ..... not much assistance when needed.
Really nice person and knowledgeable, however if you miss class or don't study well you won't do well. I didn't go to lecture very often but studied hard and read that book front to cover . and managed an A so its possible but very difficult.
tests are very hard. you may think you know it but you probably dont. shes humorous anda good lecturer. take DETAILED NOTESSS!!!! and GO TO CLASS! i had it at 8am and skipped once in a while. i definitely shouldnt have. i loved my TA (Becca Speer). very approachable and a good grader (not too harsh). sections seem pointless though. but are mandator
This class had some interesting material in it, but the reading was long and boring. I often didn't do the reading. Mullin is a fun lecturer and very clearly covers the bulk of the material that is on the mid-term and final. Her tests are tricky, but if you go to lecture and study a bit, you should be ok.
Mullin is a great orator, yet her class is VERY difficult. Her tests are multiple choice, but they are very detail oriented, so don't think they will be easy. Also, the essay topics are challenging. In order to get a good grade, you must memorize the lecture notes along with key ideas from the book and do well on the essays.
She doesn't test your knowledge, she tests your test taking skills. If you are a good test taker then take the class, if not then DO NOT! It is boring and the midterm and final are impossible!
Professor Mullin is a GREAT lecturer. COMM 1 was at 8 in the morning, but i rarely fell asleep.. she made it easy to understand and fun. However, it is not an easy class. Her tests and papers are really hard.
Easy class if you go to LECTURE and take detailed notes. Write down the examples she uses to apply the concepts. Know your notes front and back and know key terms from the book and exams wont be as people say. Its hard to get a good grade on the papers. I got a C- and a B- on them but pulled an A- in the class. GO TO LECTURE!!
Lectures were extremely interesting and her passion for her subject shows. The class is very helpful in everyday life, but the tests tend to be difficult.Beware for the midterm & final!
Great professor. I love the way she lectures. Never fell asleep in class eventhough its a morning class. Don't take TA Speer (hint: Assigned paper).
She is very committed to this class and what is taught in this class. Great and intelligent professor. I recommend if our gunna take this class do not fool around and take things seriously. Be there daily, do the readings, and seek help. I did all this and i got a B in the class. And I truly did learn things in this class and enjoyed it :)
Class is difficult. Tests and papers are very hard like people have said. However, the material is interesting. Mullin is funny and memorable. Overall I recommend the class with this prof, just study your ASS off.
Very important to go to lectures, even tho they're super early. Most of her tests are based on lectures and are on applying concepts, not just knowing them. It's not a hard class just take the time to understand the concepts and examples.
As a result of the fact that they are trying to get people to drop the major, Dolly keeps some of the most ridiculous teaching standards. Her T.A's don't know how to grade and prepare students. Review sessions were a joke. My main issue with her is that her teaching style isn't enacted by her T.A.'s. I really didn't enjoy Comm 1 and Comm 88.
She seems to be a caring/motivated professor. Course material isn't hard to grasp. Her M/C tests are what shes known for, pretty tricky. Two papers, 1 MT and 1 Final. You don't really use the book all that often. My TA was pretty good, Bernadette G, I'd recommend her.
Pretty hard class. A lot of homework due in section, almost weekly. Unless you want homework and papers to be a weekly routine in your life, Don't take Comm 1 & Comm 88 together! Two papers and 1 MT and 1 Final. My TA was ok...find a good one, maybe ask Mullin before the semester starts? This class defintely requires alot of studying.
The papers are graded harshly, and the midterms/final are so difficult! The curve will either save or murder you!
Prof. Mullin is very entertaining and straightforward. Tests are fairly easy if you go to lecture. Paper grades depend on your TA, good luck with getting an easy one!
I really didn't like the multiple choice test system. It's one of those things where you either "get it" or you don't. I'm an honors student and this class was pretty challenging. Every lecture you miss is 3-4 questions off the midterm. Basically, you have to go to every lecture and really understand the concepts.
Love Mullin. Do the reading, understand all concepts, and the m/c tests are not that bad. AVOID ta Becca Speer...she's terrible
Okay, where to begin? Alright so Mullin is a very passionate Professor in her field. The class was hard. Tests are pretty much based on what she says during lecture. Papers are hard, but reading can be interesting at times. It's kind of ridiculous to think that most of the stuff taught is pretty much common sense. Avoid TA LIPP!
People give her grief, but her classes are really easy if you know what to do. Take notes on what she says in class and that's it. Don't even bother buying the books, I didn't read a single page and got an A in all 4 courses I had with her. Just study what she said about the theories and you'll ace the tests. Papers are up to your TAs.
Don't know why everybody keeps saying she's difficult. I've had harder high school teachers. She's actually pretty easy if you go to class and take good notes (NOT just the stuff on the slides). NEVER skip lecture; most of the material on the midterm/final come from there (not the reading). Great professor. Super clear, entertaining, and helpful.
She is very informative, and quite funny. Be prepared for her exams though...very difficult. They ake you second guess yourself constantly, even if you know the material well. Still, she is nice so overall I recommend the class, just stay on top of your game!
She was okay. Until Her Comm 89 paper for Spring '09 was the most ridiculous, stupid, impossible to complete thing ever. Dolly went from hot to not after this paper.
love her and her lectures are interesting- BUT shes mean when it comes to tests and it just seems like she's trying to trick you into getting some questions wrong.
The tests are super hard and I always felt like she was trying to trick us. If you are not 100% certain about your answer choice, YOU WILL FAIL! BUT, she's super helpful during office hours and she's nice. The rest of the grades are up to the TA. Skim the readings but don't bother trying to go in depth.
She was so difficult and terrible I changed my major. The test are specifically made to trick the student instead of to test the student. The average grade for the midterm was a C+/B-. Sadly, in order to get into the Communication Major you HAVE to take her because she is the only teacher that teaches the class
must go to lecture otherwise it is nearly impossible to pass. great lecturer, loves what she does and knows what she's talking about but her mc exams are KILLER. just take notes on everything(!!) she says and you should be ok. busted my ass for a B+ in comm1 and got a B- in comm89 since i had a very difficult TA (paper grades are up to them)
I loved Comm 1! Mullin is fun to listen to and the material is so applicable to life. For those of you thinking about majoring in Comm, this is pretty much what the UD is like. Heavy emphasis on lectures. Multiple choice tests and two papers. Go to class and you'll be fine.
bring your laptop and type all the slides, and the examples she gives. Read book and before midterm/final go back and add the stuff not covered (she tells u what they are) and you should be fine. The class isnt hard, its just that you need to know EVERYTHING
the class isn't hard, but it's not necessarily easy. there's a lot to know, but it's all fairly simple stuff. get a good TA and you should be fine, take Gomez as a your TA; she's cute and cool!
I'll start by saying that this class is designed to discourage students from the major. Mullins exams test your test taking skills, not your knowledge of the material every ? is a trick. Difficult to know what is wanted, Comments like "more depth" are not helpful. You're kind of left feeling around in the dark. Disappointing and discouraging class.
tests given do not test knowledge of subject but are rather set up to help the student fail. test questions are designed to trick the student and worded in a purposeful and confusing way. prof blatantly tells class that it is a weeder class.
Fairly easy class- I put a moderate effort into studying for the midterm and final, wrote the papers the day before they were due (which i don't recommend), and ended up getting a B+. The tests are hard, but not impossible to do well on. Lecture was clear and usually interesting.
Dolly's lectures are interesting and relate back to the real world. Her tests are extremely tricky, and like said previous, this class is used to weed out people from the major. She is nice, engaging and relatable, but you HAVE to study in order to get a good grade. Grade entirely depends on TA, so get a good one.
Comm 1 is the most unfair class I have even taken. It is absolutely ridiculous how she writes the test to trick people and discourage them to drop the major. The material is not difficult but she makes is difficult. It is a shame that the comm department allows this for they are weeding good students out of the major. Why risk your GPA for a COM
Had high hopes for this class due to her clear lectures and happy attitude, but then I took the test. She purposely makes them tricky and complicated to discourage people from the major which is completley UNFAIR and ridiculous.
Bad professor. Deliberately focuses the class on preventing students from doing well rather than encouraging learning.
Unfair midterms and final. She isn't a bad lecturer at all and actually seemed pretty nice. But the major is so impacted that they deliberately make the tests about your test taking abilities vs. your knowledge of the material. Put in good work and got a D+. Hurt my GPa but am not really mad anymore, I'll take a biochem major over comm any day!
The class is tough and is going to take a lot of work. I put in a lot of hours to get an A-. STUDY for the tests! Read the book! Go to EVERY lecture! If you ever have trouble Professor Mullin is extremely helpful. Interesting course just takes effort!
This course actually required attendance and reading to do well in. Also, the tests WERE tricky, but as long as you know the material, you don't fall for her tricks! Lectures were interesting, and Dolly is entertaining for sure! Stoked for Comm 89
Dolly is great with her faults. She talks very fast, goes off topic allows students who don't have a clue & R not listening 2 interrupt & mess up the entire flow. Tests R TRICKY. Know stuff without doubt. Study in groups. Go to every class & every section. Stay on top of reading. Start paper early, get lots of help and if your TA sucks complain!
prof. mullin's lectures are entertaining and can keep u focused. attendance is mandatory since lectures are different compare to the readings. tests are very very tricky, extremely hard to score high. writing assignments are interesting, however, its hard to get good grades too.
her difficulty is really exaggerated...do the reading, go to [most] lectures, and as long as you get the concepts you'll be fine. i got an A without too much effort. use your TA for sure if you need help on papers and really getting the concepts. becca speer is the best TA everrr.
She is an engaging professor and trys her best to make the lectures interesting. She provides powerpoints, but attending lecture is mandatory. Write down the examples she verbally gives about the topics. Yes the test is tricky but if you read the book, take good notes, and know them inside out for the midterm and final you'll do fine.
I cannot praise Mullin enough! My only regret is that she no longer teaches upper division. Her lectures are straightforward and she tells anecdotes that make them interesting. She is very approachable and always willing to help. She is the only professor I've had who greets me with a hug when I see her on campus. She's fantastic.
Mullin's test try to prevent you from doing well. Even if you go into it completely confident, you will come out second guessing every answer. She purposely tries to trick you. Very unfair.
I love Dolly, but I hate Cia. DO NOT EVER GET HER FOR A TA. switch out immediately if you do, she is the most unfair grader when it comes to papers and doesn't help out much during sections either.
Professor Mullin is ridiculous when it comes to testing. There is no other University that works hard at trying to get rid of students who are interested in Communication. The department is impacted so they want to scare you away and they are doing a good job. I have a high GPA 3.8 and got a C+ in her class.
Prof.Mullin is ridiculous. I came to UCSB as a pre-Comm major, no matter how hard I tried, go to TA's office hour,Mullin's office hour, it wasnt helpful. I studied super hard but still get horrible grades for her super tricky midterm and final. I actually have to switch to other majors because her class hurts my GPA. She thinks she is funny but NOO
GREAT LECTURES!!!
Prof. Mullin is really nice goes out of her way to help if you come to office hours lectures are interesting. The tests do suck really badly so if youre like me and have never had to study for anything before this class is a reality check. Record her lectures if you can lecture notes are key and even the most miniscule detail can be VERY important
She was funny and really nice. Her lectures were clear.MUST GO TO LECTURE!Tests are all lecture material and very little book or reader.
This class requires a lot of work. Two papers with seemingly broad prompts but they are graded very strictly. Tests are super tricky! Just memorizing is not enough. Not recommended for a basic GE course.
Dolly was a very nice professor and very clear with her lectures. However her tests require ridiculous amounts of studying and they're very tricky. You definitely have to work your tail off for a high grade in this class because the grades are ranked.
Dolly Mullin is a genuinely sweet lady and a fantastic lecturer. Which is lucky because attending lecture is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. The majority of her very tricky tests are from the lecture material but it's still necessary to read the book. The 2 papers are easy and interesting to write. It's a fantastic class, but does require dedication and work.
Honestly I didn't learn anything from this class. Her lectures seemed to be so straight foward but when you take the exam, it is nothing like that. The tests are nearly impossible to do even ok on. If you are not a comm major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Definitey the professor to make someone want to switch out of the COMM major
This class is VERY hard, but you have to pass it to get into comm major. My advice go to office hours every week, she doesn't care, I did this and she was very nice and helpful no matter how much help I needed. And just check in with your TA about your paper every step of the way. I did this and got a b+ in the class. Good Luck!
A difficult course! Not recommended for incoming Freshmen. Attend lectures if you want to do well on the exams. Her tests are tricky and requires lots and lots of studying. She is a very nice lady. She sometimes tells stories during lecture and it makes it less boring. Didn't really learn anything from the course. not interested in communications.
She is very clear and organized in lecttures, but her test are difficult. they're multiple choice but w/ confusing options b/c many of the answers could be correct...or not. You have to knoe your stuff forward and backward.
She is very clear and organized in lecttures, but her test are difficult. they're multiple choice but w/ confusing options b/c many of the answers could be correct...or not. You have to knoe your stuff forward and backward. The grades are pretty evenly distributed complete with As Bs Cs Ds and Fs, it's competitive.
Two essays required, both required an average amount of research but were very doable. The exams are not as hard as people make them out to be. She is very detailed in her questions which can be tricky at times but you just have to actually read the textbook and attend lecture to do fine. Class requires a lot of studying but its not overwhelming.
This class really isn't as hard as it sounds. The concepts are extremely easy to know for the test, you just have to be able to apply them to real life. She is very interesting and is the only professor that made an 8am bearable and actually keep my interest the whole time. Love her
Professor Mullin is a very good professor and you can tell she loves what she does. She is very personable and willing to help her students. Lecture was entertaining even though it was at 8 AM. Her tests are very hard, but the material is interesting. Only bad thing about this class was her TA Michael Mangus. If you get him you're screwed!!!
A fun, easygoing professor. Tests are difficult but if you read each question thoroughly it shouldn't be a problem. HOWEVER her TA Michael Mangus is atrocious, and in a class where a TA's grade on papers can make or break you, he spells disaster. He is revoltingly full of himself, with a tangible air of superiority, and very unwilling help.
Great professor, she is really nice and fun. Class is detail-oriented but you know exactly what to expect on the tests. Some say exams are tricky but
Great professor, she is really nice and fun. Class is detail-oriented but you know exactly what to expect on the tests. Some say exams are tricky but they aren't- just read the ? carefully. Weekly section hw is easy& just for credit. Research paper is straight forward and very structured. Annie is the best TA, hope for her. Good class overall
Shes such a great lecturer/prof this class was at 8am and i never once fell asleep because she is so enthusiastic and interesting! Tests were hard ,detailed and tricky. Go to lecture and take good notes and read the book. Grade based on 2 papers, midterm, final, section, and experiment participation. I actually did better on my tests than papers.
Took her for Comm1 and Comm88 and I love her lectures. She makes examples that you remember and for an 8am class she kept me awake. Her test are "tricky" but she really wants you to be able to apply the material which I like. She is helpful during office hrs also
Took Comm 1 and 88 with Mullin and I pulled B-'s. The other two premajor classes I took taught by other professors, I got A's. SAME EFFORT PUT INTO ALL FOUR CLASSES, TOO. I think that says a lot. Her tests are ridiculous and they don't help students learn. Most ppl end up second guessing what they've learned and thus do poorly. Not cool.
She's freaken awesome, had her for all my pre-comm classes! Most inspiring professor I ever had! Book is required but most questions are from lecture, and they are tested IN-DEPTH because she expects you to know it inside/out given the fact that she lectures about it. Going to miss her enthusiasm and lectures! Too bad she doesn't teach upper div :(
I have now had Dolly for 2 of my pre-comm classes and loved her both times. She is one of the most helpful professors out there who really makes time for her students. Her lectures are beautifully organized. Her midterms/finals are definitely tricky, but she expects her students to have thorough knowledge of the material. 1 more class with her! :)
Definitely a great class especially if youre thinking about this major. Notes are organized and she clearly explains everything. 2 papers, 1 midterm, and final. People say her tests are tricky but the things is, you just have to apply the concepts to examples and that's it. Not that hard, just study. Overall, I would take her again if I can! :)
This was my last pre-requisite class with Dolly, and I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed her as a professor and will miss her lectures dearly. However, I will not miss her tests. Despite her effective lectures, her tests were unfair. Rather than being about actually knowing the material, it was about knowing how to take Dolly's tests.
Professor Mullin was a great professor. She clearly is passionate about communication and her lectures are very structured. Don't miss her class, or else you will miss a lot of information. Everyone thinks that her tests are hard, but they are not any harder than any other class. Just know all the key terms and know how to apply them. Easy A
Shes a cool lady, but she is hard. her tests are out of control and she admits to it and i think like the fact. papers are graded comparitivly which is not fair.
She was a fantastic lecturer who is clearly very passionate about the subject she teaches. In order to pass the class you must go to lecture and the discussion classes. It is also of your best interest to take your time on her tests and think critically about what she is asking for. Also, I would recommend not thinking the material is easy.
awesome lectures. buck the tests. SO HARD. papers were very easy but seriously.. worst midterm and final I've ever taken. she wants you to know the material inside and out, very specific. her Q's are VERY tricky. lecture is a must!
SUCH A GOOD LECTURER! Tests are hard but as long as you know the material well, you'll be fine. (I got an A in the class)Requires quite a bit of work, but if you wanna do well you shouldnt be putting in minimal work anyway. Probably one of the best professors I've had at UCSB, and she's very nice and approachable. :)
The workload is the same as any other class. Her tests aren't even as bad as everyone says. It's only because they assume the material is common sense so they blow off the readings and don't attend lectures so they don't understand the material. READ THE PAPER PROMPTS carefully! Attend lecture, take good notes & you'll do fine. Ps. reader = bible.
She makes the class very interesting with her enthusiasm and knowledge of the course. However, contrary to what she says, her midterm and final are very tricky. When one question has the answer "all the above" and then "Both A and B", you can't help but second guess yourself sometimes. Overall, study and read on a regular basis.
Her lectures are scattered. I can hardly understand the tangents she is going in half the time. Most of my notes have to clarify what she is saying. Uses too many personal examples to the point of distraction. Material is definitely not difficult. Do the reading, pay attention in lecture, prep in advance for papers, and you'll get an A.
I also took her for Comm89 and my comments for both are pretty much the same....LOVE! she is the best teacher I've had here so far. The only catch is that you really have to know the material because her tests are a bit tricky. Otherwise, she is very enthusiastic and interested in helping students.
She is the BEST lecturer ever. She makes learning fun because she relates everything to class. GO TO LECTURE. Dont have to buy book only reader. test mostly from notes. Hard test but if u go to lecture and pay attention you should be fine. Don't memorize rather learn material by reteaching it to self. Got an A in her class following these rules.
Mullins totally loves her subject, and it shows. She's always bubby and excited during class, which makes in interesting. Students love her! The class isn't too hard at all, so I would recommend it if you're interested in the subject.
I absolutely love professor Mullin! I really don't understand everyone's reviews. The class is not difficult and she is an excellent lecturer. Don't let these reviews put you off!
After 3 quarters in a row with Dolly I have enjoyed every moment spent in her lectures! She is great at making things clear and also making them relevant to your own life. That being said, her tests are undoubtedly some of the hardest tests I've taken at UCSB. Once you get familiar with her test type though you should get better.
I really enjoyed Comm1 with Mullin. Make sure to take DETAILED notes on the lectures and write down the examples and thoroughly go over the book. Attend class. If you do all of that you should get an A just make sure you know you're stuff!
Professor Mullin is awesome! Comm1 is my favorite class I've taken at UCSB so far! Professor Mullin is enthusiastic and makes class exciting. Her tests can be difficult but if you prepare for them correctly they make sure that you actually LEARN the subject instead of just memorize it. Take good notes at lecture and study by creating applications
I knew all the material but her exams were way too tricky. I felt like she was trying to confuse us with answers that were A and C, all of the above, none of the above, etc. Other classmates said the same thing, they studied their butts off but it didn't matter. TA's grade papers without telling why they take pts off. Just be careful on exams!
Hardest exams that I have taken. Lec. is a must. Sec. is a must. Even still class average on exam 58!
I HATED THIS CLASS!! Her tests are awfully confusing. Literally the dumbest most useless class I've have ever taken or will ever take. But okay professor.
She is an amazing lecterer. I loved attending her class since she made her powerpoint presentations so enjoyable. The midterm and final are a bit tricky; you have to study the material quite well to do well. Be warned: the TAs grade the papers pretty hard.
Love this professor! She's friendly, approachable, and really puts in the effort to answer your questions thoroughly. Good sense of humor = good lectures. Tests are a little confusing, but if you attend lecture + read often, then you should be good!
professor is incredibly clear, organized and INTERESTING. she uses a ton of video clip examples. she's super goofy and wacky and is very comfortable lecturing. her personality makes lecture not only fun but easy to keep up with and remember. She's very relatable and fair- she wants you to do well in the class.
wow. just wow. this class is complete bull, DO NOT TAKE. there is a high chance you will get Ds or Cs on papers, and the tests are stupid hard. Take this class if you like not passing.
I dont understand the negative feedback/rumors about her. This class was not that bad and she was not only enthusiastic/interesting, but very FAIR. Tests werent that tricky, besides the fact that she uses a lot of "all the above/b and c/none of the above" style multiple choice questions. If you go to class and read then you'll do well.
Dolly is great and all, but this class is designed to weed out all the people who want to be comm majors. her tests and ridiculously hard when they really should't be. guess she did her job cause i'm no longer going to be a Comm major.
Yes her tests are hard and ask you to really apply the concepts she talks about, but I think this class was great! I learned so much and felt so accomplished when I did well on her tests and the research paper. You just have to put a little extra effort into studying for the tests, but don't let that scare you away! She is a great professor!
Tests are very tricky so you really have to know the material. Must attend every lecture to do well in the class. I got a B- which I needed to get into the comm major so she makes you work for it! Midterm, final, and a research paper plus a section attendance/homework grade so always go to do well!
Very tricky test. Research paper involves a lot of work. Curves final grade but in general her test are VERY VERY VERY HARD...
She is really helpful but her test are not easy. I had her for 89 and 88 one used the book more than the other. Overall I had a great time in her class but you do have to study your butt off to get into the major.
I've had Dolly 3 times already. Definietly read the book and know the lecture back and forth for sure! Tests were always pretty hard for me but my friend gets B's and A's on them. But Dolly is a great teacher and very enthusiastic.
The content of the course is easy, but her tests are ridiculously tricky and hard for NO REASON. It's insanely ridiculous because her multiple choice questions have 5 choices in which every answer seems right. Avoid her if possible.
This was the only C grade I got while at UCSB! Lectures are good, but tests are tricky & confusing. TA's grade harshly. I think this class is interesting, but the grading and tests are really disappointing. Wished I didn't take this class, but Prof Mullin is a great speaker regardless!
I signed up for this class not even knowing what comm was. Prof Mullin is incredible beyond words. She was so captivating. I found myself excited for lecture and laughing at her tangents and stories. TAKE THIS CLASS! It is a lot of work and not easy but it is well worth the effort. Prof Mullin is honestly the most incredible teacher I have ever had
This was a great class. It was definitely difficult. Tests have material from lecture and book. Attendance is mandatory, as she does not post slides online. Lectures/material is straight forward, but tests require that you truly understand course concepts. I recommend this class.
Lecture mandatory! Write down every example she proses in class and go home and make your own. Read the book but use her notes more. Tricky class you REALLY must know the material. She gives a great lecture. Two papers and research study participation. Utilize your TAs and always attend section. This was part of the premajor.
Man oh man, this class had me worried sick since I'm a Comm major. I didn't do that well on the midterm, but once dedicated a serious amount of time I did well. 89% on the Final, 80% on the paper. TA grades hard on the paper, tests are insanely tricky. Good teacher, but you have to KNOW your stuff forwards and backwards. Study like crazy.
She is very into what she teaches, which makes the lectures interesting. However the tests are hard, and the research papers are graded harshly...
This was a great GE class, I thought. There's a good amount of reading, but the material itself is easy. Everyone was saying the tests were tricky, but they really weren't, as long as you pay attention to the lectures and read. My paper grades weren't even that good, but if you rock at multiple choice, then you have nothing to worry about.
As a new transfer student I took this in my first quarter and it was a really interesting class. I loved lectures! However, I thought I knew the material well enough but the midterm came around and it was so difficult. She loves to confuse you on her exams. The TAs grade pretty hard on the papers as well. Definitely read!
I did enjoy the course but beware, the quizzes can be very tricky and the papers are graded harshly.
Great professor. Her lectures are easy to follow with helpful examples. You have to keep up with the readings and go to section. Tests are really hard and depending on the TA the paper can be difficult too...
do not take. Her tests are meant to trick you and her goal is to discourage you out of the major. She makes the subject harder than what it is.
I am a Pre-Comm major and fell in love with the subject. Mullin will sometimes go on tangents when using examples, but does a good job explaining concepts. 2 papers, midterm, and final - the second paper is graded a lot harder and the tests can be tricky. Will refer to both lecture and textbook during exams. Super enthusiastic for an 8 AM. TAKE IT.
Mullin is super enthusiastic and funny. I was never too upset about getting up to go to lecture at 8am. It is definitely worth taking, and I am NOT a comm major. Go to lecture and read and you will pass the midterm/final easily. The two papers are graded much harder.
take her if you like to get C's on papers that you've worked hard for and if you like insane multiple choice questions with 5 right answers.
Because she teaches comm intro classes, there is going to be a lot of material that you are going to have to learn, though not much of it is actually "difficult." Many people say her tests are unfairly hard, but I never got that. She's funny, knows her stuff, and overall I think a good professor.
Took 1 and 88 during summer. A lot to fit into a 6 week course instead of 10 weeks Comm 1 2 papers, midterm and final.... Comm 2 Research group project, paper, midterm, final but overall very doable. Really enthusiastic teacher and very nice. Prof and TA's very willing to help. Don't twist test questions, what's there is there. You'll do fine
Professor Mullin is spunky and fun! Although, her tests are hard and you do have to work for your grade. Take good and clear notes, personal I never bought a big for any of her classes and I have taken both Comm 1 and Comm 88. As long as you are a good note taker you are fine!
Took Comm 1 last spring quarter as a GE. Honesty I attended every lecture and yet the midterm and final were extremely difficult for no reason. I got a C on the first paper but an A on the last (not sure how). I ended up getting a C+ which hurt my GPA. Avoid this course if possible.
Professor Mullin was great. Subject matter was really interesting especially the stuff about social media communication. Would definitely take again, but the tests are definitely tough but fair.
I love her lectures! She is so engaging and entertaining that makes me feel like 8am was not so bad. However, the papers are exams are hard. I got a C+ on the first paper and an A+ on the second, not sure why. Papers are graded by TA so make sure you know what they want, also, it is graded compared to other students. Finals was harder than midterm
TESTS ARE SO HARD. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR AN ELECTIVE
Great lecturer. She goes over exactly what's going to be on the exams. You HAVE TO TAKE GOOD NOTES to pass this class. There's some overlap material with the textbook but not much. I suggest you still read every chapter though. I went to all classes, took notes, read the book, and the tests weren't that hard. She does try to trick you however
Mullin is awesome and lecture is absolutely essential to passing. would not recommend to people who do not read or taking as a GE. if you read and pay attention to class and really study, an A is totally possible. the curve bumped my B to an A-! TA grades your 2 essays. final was easier than the midterm and the questions are tricky.
Comm 88 was the toughest out of the four pre-comm courses but it was manageable. The paper is not difficult but the material is dull. Since she is a fantastic speaker and a wonderful person she does her best to keep lecture entertaining. BUT the tests are extremely tricky sometime so do yourself a favor and don't cram the night before!
Material presented in lecture and book SEEM straightforward. 2 papers both 5-6 pages. TAs will tear it apart even though you might think you got down to every detail of the topic. Midterm and final are tough because a lot of the answers are relatively similar making you second guess everything. You might think you did well but you could be wrong.
Supposedly hardest out of the 4 pre-comm classes but so far, it's my best (1, 87, 88).. Must attend the lectures. Didn't touch the book but there are questions on the test pertaining to the book but only a couple. Midterm was alright, final was incredibly hard. Similar to 1, you just have to know how to apply the concepts!!
Professor Mullin is great, but this class does require work. Her tests are about 80% lecture based. If you review the key terms in the book and take good lecture notes, you should do fine. the term project was pretty annoying group work but she gives plenty of time to complete. Beware of the comparative grading on it though. It's tough.
Prior to taking the class, I'd heard her exams were extremely tough and that the paper grading criteria was harsh but that wasn't the case for me. Attend lecture, do your readings and you'll pass every exam and paper. Know the concepts and how to apply them to scenarios (that's what her tests are like).
Professor Mullin's my favorite professor at UCSB. Great lecturer, hilarious, and adorable. Her lectures are enjoyable to attend even though COMM 1 is an 8 am. Be sure to get Avi McClelland-Cohen as your TA! By far my favorite TA who's down to earth, entertaining, understanding, kindhearted, helpful, and accomodating to your personal needs.
This class is really cool & Mullin is hilarious and makes it pretty interesting. The tests and papers are tough. If you work hard, you can probably pull a B.
not an easy A, but concepts are VERY easy so just study,2 analytical papers (5-6 pages). If you're terrible @ analytical papers, go to OHs. TAs VERY helpful w papers! I got an A in the class by going to my TA for my help w my paper, started papers 2-3 weeks before due, read every chapter assigned & took notes while reading&went to every lecture.
Being that it was 8am lectures, Mullin definitely pulled through. Her enthusiasm makes you forget how much sleep you're missing out on. Tests are considered "tricky" because she tests on the concepts, not definitions. Two 5-6 page papers, multiple choice midterm and final. Book is a must and don't even think about skipping out on lectures.
Her tests are tough if you don't prepare for them but you should be fine as long as you go to class and really try to understand all the concepts she's teaching. REALLY study for them though, do not underestimate the easiness of the material she teaches. Mullin makes sure you really do know your stuff. She is a super cool lady and a great lecturer
She was a lot of fun in Comm 1, kept things relevant, and made things interesting. Comm 88 is so boring though, but maybe I'm just not as interested in research methods (attendance in that class is significantly less). Her tests are not at all easy, and though she doesn't trick you, if you aren't paying close attention you can slip.
Lecture doesn't matter or help at all for the tests. The paper is what makes this class hard... you are left in the dark and expected to kill it.
One of UCSB's best professors. She's very experienced, communicates the content through PowerPts very well (DUH!). She is accommodating to students-I had to take the midterm late and she had no problem with that. She is cheerful, makes lectures interesting with many examples. Tests are hard but definitely doable. Would HIGHLY recommend.
Hardest Comm class so far. She even said the tests are the most physically draining, but it's doable. The course info is not very interesting, but her lecturing makes it a bit more exciting. Study intensely and really know the information inside and out for her tests. The group project wasn't so bad, the process is just hassle.
Tests on the overall concepts, not direct terms. I received an A by reading, studying a LOT, outlining and giving myself plenty of time for the 2 papers. You really work for your grade, and yes-she does use tricky lingo. As for Professor Mullin herself, she's awesome! Great lecturer, very animated and friendly. Stay on top of it and you'll pass!
Not an easy class. Be prepared to know the notes from inside out. Don't skip her lectures, info she gives there is vital. Tests are draining. Attend her Q&A sessions and ask her questions, she's very helpful.
Professor Mullin makes her 8am lectures interesting and her personality is bubbly and entertaining! However, you HAVE to attend every lecture to have a chance at passing. I got an A- by going to every lecture and because she curves her class. Her tests are difficult because of the wording but definitely not impossible. Overall, great intro class!
She is an awesome prof! She's such a great communicator and she makes the lectures really interesting. If you want to succeed in this class do the reading and most importantly pay attention in lecture! Her tests can be a bit challenging. Don't just memorize definitions, understand the concepts and be able to apply it. Comm majors will love her!
Great lecturer! The class requires a lot of work, 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. No homework, research participation necessary, and section participation necessary. Mullin is a great lecturer and going to class at 8AM was worth it. I went to her office hours for help and she was clear and eager to help! Wouldn't recommend for a GE, lots of work
Do not take this class unless you are comm major. Too much reading and lectures are boring. The paper grading is extremely tough.
don't bother trying to cram info, it only takes you so far. studying often would have helped me so much since tests are only tricky to those that don't know the material by heart. essays are graded in comparison to everyone in the TA's section. I got Pines and she was sweet but super tough grader. have no regrets and do office hours!
a lot of people warned me that this class was going to be hard, but the tests and papers were fairly doable. This is actually my favorite course I've taken so far. Her lectures are enjoyable, relatable, and detailed. As long as you take good notes from lecture and the book, memorize them, and think of good examples, you should be fine.
I had three classes with her: comm 1, 88, and 89. I got A's in all her classes. I really loved her lecture. She is amazing and caring. Her tests may be tricky, but if you study her ppts (focus more on her lecture/ go over it at least 3 times before the test), you will be fine. OR just pay attention in class (then, less studying for you to do). :)
Mullin is a great Prof - her tests get a reputation for being tricky but if you understand all the concepts its actually pretty straightforward. Textbook isn't really necessary but GO TO CLASS!! She doesn't post lecture anywhere so you need to be there to get notes. And she's really nice!! Old school humor and lectures at a very reasonable pace
Prof Mullin was a great teacher. Missed 2 lectures before the midterm and still got a 96. Not as impossible as everyone makes it seem. You won't feel prepared for the tests no matter how hard you study, but the tests are not bad even with minimal studying.
In my opinion, Mullin is a terrific professor. The class definitely requires work but if you go to lecture/take good notes/read you are good. Only really difficult part of Comm 89 was the research paper.
Professor Mullin is a cheerful and engaging lecturer. She's fairly clear, and the examples she gives to illustrate different concepts are very relevant, and can help on the tests. The papers she assigns are a bit tough keep in mind, this is a 5 unit class. Would take a class with her again.
Professor Mullin made my 8am bearable. Everyone says the Comm1 is hard, but I feel the difficulty is exaggerated. She is a great professor, super engaged, clear, and concise. She tells funny stories too. She's overall great!!
LOVE DR. MULLIN, she is kind, helpful, clear, organized and demanding of her students. a true challenge. i visit her in office hours and she clarifies wonderfully. would recommend!
LOVED Dr. Mullin! She made the 8 AM lecture interesting & engaging. Very knowledgeable about Comm & has lots of insight. You really need to put in work if you want an A but most students WANT to work hard because she really inspires that type of work ethic.
Dolly is overall a great professor. Her classes are not an easy A, you just have to work for them. Go to ALL lectures, she doesn't post them online and they will be on her tests, and do ALL the reading - a good majority of the test questions are from the reading. You learn a lot, and she's fair!
I thought I did pretty well on all of my tests walking out of them, but I never ended up with the grades I had hoped for. She was a really interesting teacher, and was a great communicator. For tests make sure you have the definitions down, this is one of the most vital things to this class
I loved Mullin for Comm1 and I loved her for Comm88. This class doesn't have as interesting material as Comm1 but she still has fantastic lectures. The research paper is really long but actually not that difficult to do. The midterm/final were really straightforward if you knew the study guide front to back. Go to class! Don't read, just study hard
such a great professor. really engaging and energetic with great knowledge in the topic.
Don't take this class unless you are ready to write because her tests are tricky and her papers are really hard. You have to try hard in this class, it isn't a show up and pass, you have to read and study for the tests or else you're super screwed. Don't take this as a GE class, it will mess up your grade.
Professor Mullin is a skilled lecturer and understands her students. She emphasizes information from lectures over reading, but both are required to get an A. Papers are tough depending on the TA, but very manageable. Tests are multiple choice and straightforward. There is little to no homework besides papers, reading and studying.
Really awesome professor, lectures are very interesting and engaging. The class is honestly not that bad if you put in a decent amount of work. Make sure you discuss your paper ideas with your TA and ask them 2 read your thesis. Don't begin studying last minute for the midterm/final. Read the textbook and follow her study-guide and you'll do fine
Dolly Mullin is an amazing professor. Her lectures are entertaining and relatable. But as fun as she is her class is really hard. You have to be there in lecture every day to get specific notes that apply to the midterm and final. Be prepared to read a lot. Big tip: Take down notes of what she's saying and her in class examples.
Mullin included personal stories and examples that livened up the class immensely. She is a great public speaker and is very clear. Make sure to take really good notes though on both the slides and especially her comments and examples. The textbook contains some of the info but not everything on exams. There are two 5pg papers, final is challenging.
Lively professor; I enjoyed her lectures. She doesn't post lecture slides or notes online though so skipping lectures would put you at a serious disadvantage. Midterm & final exams were toughI came out of the exam feeling great but my grades said otherwise. I like that Mullin grades on a curve that will only help your grade though.
GO TO LECTURE and take really clear, organized notes!! You have to know the material insanely well because her multiple choice style tests are tricky as hell. Reading is supplemental to lecture (80% lecture) but helpful, as it is repetitive. She wants you to do well so use her as a tool!
Her midterm and final are tough but she is really funny in the lectures. I failed my midterm and did an average on my paper so that I had to change my major. But overall she has good lectures and is a great professor.
Fun, interactive lectures. Attendance is mandatory since most exam questions are based off the lectures. No iClicker, 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. Reading is supplemental and helpful for the little details on exams. Curve is pretty generous and will only help you succeed. Material is engaging and easy to pick up on with Dolly's lectures.
Mullin is amazing!I had her for two quarters both of which were 8ams and I never missed a lecture. She makes early classes manageable and entertaining! She is very clear and gives great examples. Her tests are very difficult but if you put in the work, you can do well. Readings are very important. You have to put in the work but I loved her classes
No iClickers in lecture, but attending lecture highly recommended. Attendance is mandatory in section. She is a writer of the textbook, so you should buy it to read. Has extra credit opportunities. Test are fine as long as you know your terms. Two essays (5 pages). Overall loved this class and made me want to become a Comm major!
The tests for this class were very similar to COMM 1. She gives you three options, then all of the above, and then A&C (For example). The group research project was very doable. The only downside was group members rarely participated so I did most of the project. For the project, make sure your discussion is very thoughtful and the end of the paper
Great professor. Clearly loves what she teaches and her lectures are pretty helpful, although they don't always cover everything that the reading does. Don't skip lecture and use discussion section to clarify concepts.
She's a great teacher and speaks very enthusiastically while clearly delivering the topics. I changed my major to Communication after taking this course. I definitely recommend going to office hours as well because she was very helpful.
Dolly Mullin is an incredible teacher, but beware: she scales her tests accordingly. Even if you feel confident in everything you learned all quarter, the mid-term and final are brutal. If you're taking her class letter grade, make sure you attend class and you'll be fine. Sections are usually fun (for Comm 1 at least).
Prof. Mullin is amazing! She is so energetic even during 8 AM lectures and is super helpful, motivational, and easy to understand. However, her tests are brutal and the papers are graded harshly by the TAs. If you are looking for an easy GE, this is not it.
Professor Mullin is a great professor for this class. Dont skip lectures. I got a C+ and I wrote my papers last minute and barely studied. I could have gotten an A if I tried harder, it was all on me. Dont be discouraged that lecture is at 8 AM, Professor Mullin is one of my favorite professors. READ FROM THE TEXTBOOK.
This course is not friendly to non english native speakers. Because it is hard for them to get to know implications of certain conversations. TAs are told to grade the papers at the average of 38/50. Therefore, it is difficult for international students to get a high score although they study hard. Mullin herself is hilarious and she explains well.
I like Mullin, but this class is graded so unethically. Half the students get a C- or lower on the papers. I got 2 D's. She is good at explaining the material and is helpful, but the tests are diabolical and I failed both the midterm and the final despite studying my tail off. It may seem interesting, but this class will destroy your GPA.
Her lectures are so boring and a waste of time, always goes off on a tangent and starts talking about random stuff. However, attending lecture is essential to passing the exams because her exams are lecture based. I only studied for a day before the exam and got A-'s both exams. Just be sure to know everything on the SG and read q's carefully
I love Mullin! She is such a great lecturer who gives really well-organized lectures! Make sure you do not skip classes because she won't put the slides online. It's not as difficult as described. Take notes of her slides and go over it before exams, and you will be fine.
Dr. Mullin always came prepared, energetic, and ready to teach for afternoon lectures. The content in her lectures are tested on heavily, so pay attention to those and you will be fine. She's willing to elaborate on any questions, and I had a great time with Dr. M.
Dr. Mullin is super friendly and energetic about her teaching. She is always willing to answer your questions. I recommend going to the group office hours for help on exams/papers. Exams are mostly based on lecture, so you must attend class as she will not post lecture slides online. Readings are helpful, but you don't need to know every detail.
she gives great lectures if you like her teaching style, tests are okay if you read and understood.
I had Dolly for both COMM 1 & 88 and gotten A's in both her classes. It's possible! Go to lecture, pay attention, supplement with the textbook. Use her study guide & her practice exams! She expects a very thorough understanding of concepts (she wants you to know what examples belong to a concept and which don't). Be explicit in essays! Good luck!
Great teaching style. However 8AM makes going to class hard for me. If you ask any questions by email she replies really really fast. She's super kind too. Exam questions are phrased in a challenging way and the questions test detailed understanding, so going to class and reading are important. A lot of reading.
greatest professor I have had in college! had her class at 8am but actually enjoyed going bc her lectures are engaging and she's hilarious. super sweet lady and very helpful. very clear on grading criteria for papers. take good notes and read the book and you'll do well on the exams
Professor Mullin is a very nice and caring lecturer. She explains everything clearly and makes the class interesting and keeps me attentive even though it is an 8 am class. Would definitely take another class with her. But be prepared to take notes during lectures and dedicate efforts to papers and tests. Love this class.
Her lectures are soo interesting and engaging. A lot of the times things in the readings are just stuff she covered in class, so I'd recommend taking lecture notes and then flipping through readings to catch whatever she didn't go over. Papers are straight forward and her paper office hours are super helpful.
Class attendance not mandatory, but Mullin makes an 8 AM class bearable and I feel that it is more worth it to attend lecture than learn the material from the book on your own. She is funny too. Easy class. Section attendance mandatory, however. Grade consists of two papers, midterm and final. Comm 1 satisfies a writing GE as well. I recommend it!
Had her for both 1 and 89. She's one of my favorite professors. She's very funny and she uses a lot of relatable, easy-to-understand examples in her lectures. I genuinely enjoyed showing up to her class. Some say her tests are hard but I found them to be really easy as long as you show up to lecture and skim through reading.
Comm 88 is the hardest comm pre-requisite, but Mullin made it bearable. Attendance isnt mandatory, but you need the info from lecture, and her lectures are clear and entertaining. The tests arent that bad if you review your notes thoroughly (study groups help). Dont get scared away by the rumors about her tests Mullin is a great professor!
Dolly is a great lecturer and makes the 8am worth it. Material isn't difficult but go to lecture to make it easier on yourself. Grade is mainly based on 2 papers, midterm and final. Start early on your papers and studying for her exams. Her exams are said to be tricky, but if you know your concepts then they aren't too bad. Go to office hours!
Professor Mullin is a really clear and friendly lecturer! She genuinely cares about her students and was very kind when I made an appointment to talk to her. The class does require a decent amount of effort with its 1 research paper, 1 midterm, and 1 final. Don't slack off and keep up with lectures/reading!
Amazing lecture and really nice person, but the tests are hard
Dolly is seriously the best lecturer/professor I have ever had. She made 8ams bearable and all of the information was so interesting. Her tests are pretty difficult, I studied a lot and got an A on the midterm and a B+ on the final so they are doable. However, the papers are graded SO harshly and thats why I couldn't pull an A in the class :(
COMM 1 is a hard class no matter its letter graded or pnp. Most of the questions are from lecture and no ppt slides will be uploaded. YOU HAVE TO GO TO LECTURES. The papers are graded competitively. Class average is about C. Only a certain amount of people will get As.
People hate on Dolly for having tricky tests but if you actually study and know your stuff the tests are pretty easy. Go through all the lecture notes (go to lecture!!) and all the readings and make sure you understand and can apply everything. Papers for both classes were a hit or miss with me.
Mullin is very knowledgeable in her field and is readily available outside of class when needed. She hosts a lot of helpful workshops during essay or exam time (Midterm, Final, 2 Essays). Her tests are application based so reading really matters, and even though lecture isnt mandatory you need to go because she doesnt post her slides online!
Clearly knows what she's doing and gives great, interesting lectures. Don't be fooled though, the tests and papers are pretty hard even though the material seems easy. Your grade depends a lot on your TA because they grade your papers and they're super important. Super interesting class and Mullin really cares about her students.
2 papers, a midterm and final. Papers were ok depending on your TA. Midterm and final are based on the book so get ready to read. She doesn't test that much off the slides but does add some questions specifically from the lecture in her tests. My biggest advice is just be caught up with the readings.
Dolly is awesome. She is super personable and it's difficult to get bored during her lectures. The class is mostly common sense stuff but you do need to read the book to fill in the lines. Her tests are said to be "tricky" but if you study and use reasoning you'll be able to get to the right answer. Essays are graded competitively.
The lectures are amazing, but the exams and papers are challeging.
Not recommend at all. Both midterm and final are super hard
Professor Dolly is a gem. She's so engaging and her lectures never got boring. There is a lot of reading for the class, and if you don't go to lecture and read, you won't do well. There are two papers and a midterm and final. The TA' s grade the papers relatively harsh, but are accessible for help. Midterm and final consist of multiple choice.
Professor Mullin is the best. Despite this quarter being online and all lectures prerecorded, she is very enthusiastic and enjoyable when teaching. Most of your grade is composed of 3 open book quizzes and 2 essays. She is a bit tricky on the quizzes, but just read carefully. Also, go into her office hours! She's really nice to talk to!
Like everyone has mentioned, Professor Mullin's quizzes were a little tricky but her class is very doable! It might depend on your TA but papers were graded pretty harshly. Lecture/section were "optional", but make sure to watch her lectures to do well in the class. The textbook is also very helpful if you want to get an A in her class for sure.
The quizzes are hard, but the professor is ok
Professor Mullin is a really really TOUGH grader, she does not give curves nor accepting any request for boosting. The quiz is super hard and tricky where I think it's pointless to be that tricky. The Paper was graded really harshly because she said she care more about what we learn in the class instead of our grade. Do not recommend at all.
Dr. Mullin was an amazing lecturer this quarter, and she did great with online learning. Grades included Quiz 1 (30pts), Quiz 2 (35pts), Quiz 3 (45pts), Paper 1 (50 pts), Paper 2 (50pts), and other participation things to add up to 234pts. Grades were calculated by the number of points you earn. Papers were difficult and depends on what TA you have
Really good professor and good class overall. Would recommend as a GE. Take notes during lecture and read the textbook to do well. Quizzes and essays not too difficult if you study and prepare. Professor and TAs have office hours. Go to them as they will help you on papers/quizzes.
She's such a doll, really sweet and enthusiastic AND is good at explaining. Tests are open book/notes with more than enough time, so they weren't that hard despite some question being worded a bit tricky. Def take notes during lectures. Essays are long. Overall, class was easy but honestly didn't really learn much.
Prof Mullin is great. She is full of energy, always so curious, encouraging and enthusiastic. She is really funny and caring, however the class is so much work. 1-2 chapters reading every week, 2 papers, 3 exam. Very hard to keep up, if she taught more classes with less work I'd take them :)
Professor Mullin is so sweet! Its no doubt shes really passionate about what she teaches. The lectures are easy to follow and the material is engaging. Depending on your TA, there can be some tough graders but she gives the opportunity for extra credit. Shes so sweet and the midterm/final not hard as long as you take notes on lectures!
Professor Mullin was a great professor for Comm1! Her lectures were super engaging and fun to watch. The material is pretty straightforward and the midterm/final is based on the textbook readings and lectures. Make sure to take good notes and you should be fine.
Very difficult professor. I took her for COMM88 this past winter quarter, and I've never struggled so hard in a class before. My TA was also a difficult grader as well which didn't make the class enjoyable. All I have to say is expect the unexpected with this class.
Professor Mullin is fantastic! She's super funny and sweet and cares a lot about her students. Go to office hours just to chat and you'll know what I mean. The class was pretty easy too, as long as you don't procrastinate on the papers.
Prof Mullin is enthusiastic, knowledgable, and approachable. Lectures are less in depth than exam so read textbook. Papers are graded in a way that doesn't seem to value writing abilities, style, or structure; I guess understanding of concepts is more important? Going to office hours to nail down what ur TA is looking for in papers is beneficial
TA Lindsay Miller grades overly harshly. Mullin is a good lecturer. The papers are weighted far too heavily. Overall, least favorite class in the comm department.
TAs grade the papers very hard. It's almost impossible to try and figure out what the criteria for a "good" paper is. The exams are kind of difficult in comparison to the lectures that only skim over the majority of the concepts tested. Mullin is a nice woman that's very enthusiastic and knowledgable, but the papers carry too much weight of grade.
Professor Mullin made lectures really engaging even over zoom and I found her easy to follow! I wish there weren't so many required assignments so we could concentrate on writing our paper more but overall it wasn't a hard class it just took up a lot of time
She was a very engaging lecturer. Two paper assignments, roughly six pages each, a 50 question midterm and final. TA's graded papers very harshly and you need to read the textbook to know info for the tests. Not necessarily an easy A and requires effort but can be a fun class if you put in the effort.
This class was exhausting. Your grade consists of the midterm (84 pts), final (140 pts), research paper (80 pts), and filler work for your section class. You should start the study & paper as early as possible bc it's quite long. I didn't attend lectures after week 3 but went to every section. It's doable if you have the motivation & a good group.
Horrible!!! She had 2 research papers that were graded harshly (6 pgs). You couldn't go to your ta for editing cuz it would "impact your understanding of the material". Final and midterm (50 mc qs) were really tricky for no reason. You must basically memorize the textbook that she wanted you to buy (probably cuz she wrote it). Honestly horrible.
Dolly is the sweetest professor I have had at UCSB so far. Please go to her office hours and talk to her, she genuinely cares about her student's learning and understanding the material. COMM1 is not too difficult for being 5 units, just utilize the textbook and the lecture for your papers.
Not great, but not horrible. Overall a very mediocre professor, but was nice.
My problem with this class had little to to with the professor and more to do with the TAs. There are two six page papers to be written and the TAs grade insanely harsh. They are super nit picky and basically expect you to be an expert without really giving much guidance in terms of expectations. I would not recommend this class for an easy A GE.
She was probably one of my favorite professors so far. Shes so funny and knows the material and communicates it well. We had weekly reading and it was very manageable and easy to get through. I totally recommend !
She explains everything clearly with examples, but since COMM can be pretty self-explanatory it can get boring. Tests are fairly easy if you study, but papers are graded harshly by TA's with vague feedback. You don't need to read the whole textbook, just the end of chapter summaries - save your time! A solid GE overall.
Mullin was great, had fun lectures, and attendance wasn't mandatory. I can't say that her TAs are easy graders at all... they really make you work for it. Tbh it felt like your success in her class was based on the TA rather than the prof. The final and midterm are take-home exams, and require a decent amount of studying. The papers are hard.
I love Dolly Mullin, as she is very engaging. Everyone says her tests are really hard, but if you read the textbook and use it during the online test, they are very easy to get A's if you have watched lectures and skimmed reading. The essay's are scary and overwhelming, this is probably the most difficult part of the class. Donnie is best TA.
I LOVE PROF DOLLY! so entertaining and lectures were easy to follow along. however TA's graded extremely hard, papers are graded against each other as opposed to a rubric. Definitely keep up on readings and have textbook handy because tests were hard, but prof dolly made everything super clear and easy to understand, shes the cutest.
I took Mullin’s Comm 88 class and it was absolutely terrible. I dropped her class before even submitting the paper. She over complicated concepts. Retaking this class with Matni was the best decision I’ve ever made. If you have her as a proff, I wish you luck.
Mullin is the absolute sweetest and I'm so lucky I got the chance to take Comm 1 with her! She made me certain that I'll fall in love with the Communication major. For those considering taking this class, be prepared to read! A lot of people claim you can get by without the textbook but in my case, it was instrumental in securing a high grade!
Dolly is amazing. She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. The class is comprised of two 6 page papers with a mid term and final. The class is not easy but if you stay on top of your work you should be ok. I did not read the textbook once and did just fine. She is an amazing teacher and is very supportive and flexible.
Tests are impossible and make up most of your grade. They are very ambiguous and revolve around scenarios rather than textbook material. There are usually two right answers but one of the answers are more correct.
Professor Mullin was amazing but you better pray you don't get Hollie as your TA.
If you don't need this class for your major there are much easier GEs. Dolly is a great professor and is very passionate/engaging. However, there are two 6 page papers that are graded harshly by the TAs, and a midterm & final. The tests were very specific and if they weren't online I would not have done very well. The sections were a waste of time.
I LOVE DOLLY. She is one of my fav profs. Lectures were super engaging even though they were long. I def recommend reading for this class, helps a LOT with the exams. Jacova was a great TA! Paper prompts were interesting. Overall loved this class but if you are looking for an easy GE I would say take something else. Exams were a bit hard/trick q's
Very passionate and caring professor but midterm/final are super hard and make up more than half of your grade. They were online but had multiple right answers but one was slightly more correct. I felt defeated after the tests because I had a really good understanding of coursework but they were so tricky. Lots of group work to work towards paper!
Professor Mullin is very knowledgable, kind, and accommodating. She posts prerecorded lectures on GauchoSpace as backup material; they are very informative and efficient at keeping students up to speed with lecture. Brittany Wheeler was a great TA and graded fairly. In my experience, reading the textbook was not essential to securing a good grade.
COMM1 with Professor Dullin has been my favorite class at UCSB so far! She cares about her students and really wants them to excel! There are two papers for the class which aren't graded as harshly as everyone says. The midterm and finals are multiple choice and should be fairly easy as long as you do the reading! Really interesting and fun class!
Perfect comm prof
She was very interesting and engaging. Organized the entire class on gauchospace and it was easy to see each assignment for the week. midterm and final were hard, it was multiple choice but lots of trick questions and all about applying the concepts. Paper 1 was graded light, but paper 2 was harder and graded even harder. requires lots of effort.
She is my favorite professor in the university.
