Somehow Prof. Naughton makes even the hardest problems look easy. Also: he somehow makes students not feel like they're dumb if they get a question wrong while answering for the class.
Coolest Irish Accent Ever. Perfect board handwriting at incredible speeds. Draws diagrams of complex concepts that couldn't be duplicated in a CAD program. _BEST_ math instructor I've ever had.

Best math professor I've had here. Doesn't assign busywork either. Overall, awesome. (and good-looking!)
GREAT professor with good balance between seriousness and humor.
Professor Naughton is a cool guy.
His drawing skill are unbelievable, he makes sure you understand, always helpful in office hours, however, he failed at being sponsored by caffeine
Great Teacher
Excellent!
BEST CALC TEACHER EVER
Any professor who trades singles for answers deserves my respect. He was a great professor who occasionally did a striptease for the class...but if I ever have him again I'm buying the guy something with caffeine in it.
Great guy. Very disciplined and is always striving to make sure you know the material. Awesome prof.
Tries hard to ensure that everyone understands. Always asks if we get it, even though it's in a huge lecture. Tries to answer everyones questions. Tests are difficult, however.
VERY GOOD prof. always acted like questions were good, even if they weren't. he'll go "hmm....no i think i did this right". he also frequently wore simpsons shirts. would gladly take his class again. my best purdue mathematics teacher so far.
This guy is a frickin badass. Not only is he a good professor, but he is mildly british/irish/welsh/I don't ****ing know.
Quite possibly the greatest math professor I've had in my career here. He's wonderfully clear and provides lots of examples. Very clever man, too. I'm praying I end up with him again for a higher level course, because without his tutelage, I'd likely end up with a low D on every exam.
Great teacher, total badass
He made calculus interesting and was able to explain even the most difficult concept with clarity. He was totally willing to answer questons in lecture and would not put up with people goofing off in lecture.
really chill guy
I had the pleasure of being in Prof. Naughton's intro to real analysis class. He did a good job of engaging the class in developing the proofs that we covered.
HE IS SO FREAKIN HAWT!!!...
Excellent professor. He explains the material spot on and is hilarious while doing so. However, his 161/165 exams are a bit difficult, so be sure to study.
He is Irish and he is awesome. He explains everything very clearly to where everyone can understand him.
Best MA162 prof, other than Peter Cook possibly. Very clear. Moves fast in lecture, so write fast! Seemed like a cool and nice guy. Always listened to students' opinions/ideas on how to attack problems differently. Very knowledgeable. A+
GREAT Math Teacher. Best I have had at Purdue.
Very good professor, he does move fast but is easy to follow. Has a cool accent.
He is great. Teaching is clear and concise, does review before exams, is very helpful and approachable. Very cool guy. I loved his class
Naughton always goes the extra mile to explain things clearly. It is very simple to follow exactly what he is doing. And if you get lost, even if its a big lecture, he will be happy to answer a question.
Very good lecturer. Moves at a great pace and will stop to answer any question a student has. Also has very neat and organized notes which makes it even easier to follow along.
He's a great lecturer. He helps his students and cares about our grades. He's a great choice for MA161.
He is a really great professor that teaches Calculus so that everyone in his class will understand it. He's very clear and organized and always willing to help! He's also Irish, so his voice is great to listen to.
Very solid teacher! Lectures are a little boring, but thats more about the material than anything! Notes go along good with homework but not so much for the quizzes or exams.
Excellent explanations with problems. It was for once, really enjoyable to be in a maths class.
He made the material very easily understood in lecture and was really specific with what he was doing in his examples
Great lectures. Clearly explains things, and allows for things to be reexplained if needed. Highly recommend.
awesome professor. Wish he taught other levels but considering calc 2 is the hardest of the calc classes,i think hes where he needs to be.
Amazing teacher. Calc 2 is one of the hardest classes and he made it so much easier. If you have a choice take calc 2 with him. He is so clear and helpful.
Naughton is the best at explaining tough concepts. He moves at a good pace (and often polls the class to make sure of this). He knows the material is tough and he does his best to make it easy. His explanations make stuff "click" 90% of the time. Would take the class again, if it weren't calc 2.
Really helped explaining Calc 2 topics
Dr. Naughton is absolutely a great professor. He is very good at clarifying things. He take student's questions very seriously. His lecture video is being used widely.
Prof Naughton is saving my semester right now. He explains hard concepts clearly and makes calc 2 (one of the worst you'll ever take) relatively less insufferable. Try to get his lecture time, if not, just watch his lectures online.
Very good lecturer. Explains the content clearly and will answer questions to the best of his ability. I would highly recommend him if he is available for MA166. Easiness is low because of the math department in general makes it difficult to get an A.
He's really clear at explaining; probably, one of the clearest lecturer that I've ever had in Purdue so far...
Naughton is an amazing professor, he explains everything very clearly. He often checks the pace of the lecture by polling the students and he adjusts accordingly. He is very thorough and really wants you to understand what you are being asked to do. The tests are really tough though, so be prepared!
Best professor I have had the honor to have been taught by so far.
Professor Naughton is maybe the best lecturer I've ever had. He engages the students during his lectures and is a pretty funny guy too. All of his explanations are in depth and really help you understand the material. Be prepared to take a lot of notes during lectures because he goes through lots of examples.
As many of the other reviews state, Professor Naughton is an incredible lecturer. Perhaps one of the best at Purdue. He works through lots of examples - some from the homework - and always makes sure every student is on the same page. I took roughly 3-4 pages of notes for every lecture and frequently referred back to them when studying for exams.
He's funny and makes class a lot more bearable than most professors. Very good at explaining topics. If you have the choice take his class!!
A great lecturer and really takes the time to slow down during lecture if people are confused unlike some professors who just fly through everything.
This professor is awesome.
A very very thorough lecturer. Records his lectures, goes at the pace and slows down to go through all examples thoroughly when people are confused. Strict at grades though wont curve or take you over the next grade rightfully so. A lot is accomplished in his class, homework is discussed thoroughly, and past exams are worked out painstakingly too.
He explains things clearly, will take questions frequently, and works to ensure that everyone understands the material. He is the best math proff I have had so far
The lectures are clear and easy to follow and he does a great job explaining concepts in terms of everyday things that everyone can understand. He cracks a few pretty good jokes every lecture and his drawing skills are crazy good.
He's cool and likes J-pop.
Amazing professor. Clearly explains all concepts and always checks to make sure people know what's going on before he moves onto the next topic. Favorite prof at Purdue so far.
Naughton is a really good prof for MA 261 (and I have heard good things from people who have taken other classes from him). He makes jokes, and has a nice accent. If you need help just got to office hours or email him. Slader is a good resource for HW.
Daniel Phillips was my assigned MA261 professor. I went to one lecture before a friend told me about Professor Naughton. My favorite mathematics course ever. Explains clearly.
His lectures gave plenty of examples that helped with the homework, and he put the videos of them online afterwords so you could go back and re-watch it. He was conversational and sincere, with a few out-of-the-blue hilarious jokes. He made it clear he was available to help with specific questions. He can also draw in 3D super well.
Really good professor... I would recommend. Also, lectures are optional, but go.
He is English/Scottish so he is really easy to understand and he explains things in a way that newcomers to Calculus will understand. Do not expect him to assume you know something or gloss over necessary material
His lectures are on Boilercast, so you only need to go to your recitation. He is really good at explaining the material and will work on multiple exercises during lecture, which helps understand the material. If you watch the lectures and do the homework before your recitation, there is no reason not to do well on this class.
Amazing professor, explains everything clearly and makes sure everyone understand the concepts presented before moving on. Also very accessible outside of class. Examples prepare you for the nights homework and for exams. Tells good jokes and draws super well
Naughton really has a talent for explaining things in a way that anyone could understand. He speaks slow enough that I found I could just watch the lecture online at double speed, which was a pretty nice way to save time. Tests are straightforward and not intentionally meant to trick you. Do as many past exams as possible and you should be fine.
Naughton is AMAZING! Helped me get an A in MA161 with ease. He speaks very clearly and was excellent at teaching all the material.
Prof Naughton was an extremely helpful teacher.
i would die for this man
Is very clear, goes through every example at a very reasonable and constantly ensures that students understand the material. One of the best in the math department.
Really funny guy who had great lectures. He was easy to understand and always asked if anyone had any questions.
Funny professor, explains things well in lecture.
I've never had a professor who engaged so thoroughly with his students. Naughton truly is a great professor, he cracks jokes during lectures, has a great accent, and can draw very well. He explains concepts clearly and made this class the easiest math class I've taken at purdue so far.
He is honestly the best math professor I have had at Purdue University, he has a true passion for math. He has a way of explaining topics that make it easy for anyone to understand and he uses boilercast. As long as you stay on top of things, especially after the second exam the class is not bad at all.
If you tried to design the perfect math professor, you would wind up with someone like Dr. Naughton. Super clear lectures, steady pace, boilercast, easy to approach, and on top of that he's hilarious too. You'll never walk out of lecture confused (something very rare in Purdue math!)
Naughton is a math God. He's definitely up there among the best professors at Purdue. His lectures are as clear as they can be, and his approach towards teaching is just sublime. This is the guy I wouldn't mind doing every math class I ever have to with.
He is one of the best. One day he brought a banana and a knife to explain a concept. Very approachable during office hours.
Just a funky little Irishman. Super chaotic and makes the class extremely enjoyable which is a hard thing to do for calculus. He's really good at engaging students and making the class easy to pay attention in. Also he shows up to class in a tshirt and cargo pants which is an entire mood.
I originally had a different professor but came to Naughton's lectures because he was so much better at helping me understand the material. I would probably die for him.
Throughout all of my education, Professor Naughton would be the second best teacher I have EVER had. His lectures are always enjoyable and hilarious at times. I have not missed a single one, and always look forward to the next. His notes and voice are very clear in terms of material, and volume. Don't switch out; you'll be kicking yourself later.
Best lecturer I've had. Very clear lecture notes. Works out a lot of examples and takes questions during lecture. Amazing person, I wish he could teach all my calc classes.
He's a hidden gem of the Purdue math department
Dr. Naughton is by far the best math professor I have had. His lectures are very clear and he would give detailed process on how to solve problems. Would go over homework problems so you could have an idea how to do them. Definitely would take another Purdue math class with him. 10/10
Math at Purdue is so hard but Naughton was a real breath of fresh air. I actually learned from his lectures and found myself excited for the next one. 261 is a very hard course but he made it worth it. The tests are hard but fair.
Professor Naughton's lectures are clear and to the point. He does not go too quickly and he fully explains each example. He's always willing to answer questions too. (Bonus points for his amazing 3D graph drawing abilities)
Such an amazing lecturer. Definitely a hidden gem of Purdue. From his amazing explanations, hilarious comments in class, and his incredible Irish accent, hes the best professor Ive had at Purdue.
I had him for Multivariable Calculus, and he doesn't teach it often. However, he was still a great lecturer. Very concise, and a good artist (drawing 3D graphs, especially), which is important in this class. The notes were well-organized and easy to follow. He has a great personality and is overall super approachable.
I cannot find a single negative thing to say. Amazing, funny, engaging lectures that can explain calculus in simple ways even to people who hate math. He answers questions beautifully, and even though attendance wasn't required, he had unbelievable turnout.
Professor Naughton is amazing. Love him. He's so bad at jokes that he is funny. Engages the class so you can show your knowledge. He is inspirational and you are free to ask a question, he'll do his best to explain the topic.
Extremely knowledgeable professor who is able to explain hard concepts simply. If you watch his lectures in-depth and take good notes, you will succeed in MA162. Could not have asked for a better professor tbh
Very interactive and willing to work one-on-one with students
Naughton gives exceptional lectures, so make sure to attend. His notes are useful and delivery engaging, my favorite moment was when he diced a banana in class to demonstrate calculating volume by the washer method. If you miss the lectures, recordings are posted on Brightspace.
Amazing lecturer. Really knows what he's talking about. Genuinely made MA162 understandable. CHOOSE HIM IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE MA162.
He is a great professor and explains everything well. He made the Calc 2 content understandable and posted his lecture notes and recorded lectures. Take practice exams before every exam to prepare, many questions were very similar and almost repeats, final was much harder than other exams in my semester. He'll set you up to do well in the class.
Best math professor at Purdue in my opinion and is probably the only reason why I could pass 162. Man deserves all the good things in life.
I have Naughton for Calc III, and he is definitely my favorite professor at Purdue. He makes sure that everyone is in understanding with the lecture topics, and is always open to questions, no matter how small. He's known to crack jokes and puns about course material, and he really tries to keep lectures interesting.
Professor Naughton explains concepts in Calc III easily. He is great at drawing 3d pictures which make it easier to understand many of the concepts in this class. He often asks for input from each side of the classroom, which helps keep attention. His jokes are dry, yet funny. The class is very test heavy, but Naughton makes the class awesome!
DJ Naughton is a very good professor. It is actually worthwhile attending his lectures and he teaches clearly. You better hope he is your professor so that the class is not awful difficulty wise !!
Best professor I've had here. Took Calc 2 with him and he made the concepts easy to understand, and did a great job keeping the class engaged during lecture. His jokes shouldn't be funny but for some reason they're hilarious, he always managed to keep the mood light in the lecture. Would 100% take another one of his classes.
Great and fair professor. He explains the material very clearly and has a great sense of humor. 10/10
He was chill and approachable for the most part.
The goat. Could not have asked for a better teacher for Calc 2.
Funny guy. He came to class in the same sweats and random t-shirt. He is smart and answers students' questions in class. Lectures were straightforward. Homework is fine as long as you went to the lecture.
Takes time to answer questions, teaches material clearly.
DJ Naughton is an engaging professor who makes Calc 2 concepts easy to grasp. Attending lectures is a must, and using resources like unstuck AI alongside the class materials can really help with study prep.
Dr. Naughton is my GOAT, and he took my hearth away with his math lectures. Super captivating! Funny guy. You're in good hand if you have my king. He looks at the HW before he lectures so you know youll be prepared to do the HWs ;). His profile pic on the purdue math website looks nothing like him now tho (catfished?)
Great lectures, definitely one of the best math professors I've had. Always makes sure everyone understands in a big lecture room and will always respond to questions until your doubt is solved. Always on time and uses all the time to explain everything as best as possible.
Really chill guy, does multiple example problems per class, takes time to answer students' questions, handwriting is a little sloppy, but overall great professor! Class itself is challenging and test heavy, but manageable if you take time outside of class to study.
Tough course but learned a lot from the professor. He knew how to manage the class well and most of all he seemed to care about our understanding by asking questions and explaining things over and over if any student needed it. Would definitely take again.
Dr. Naughton is amazing at explaining difficult topics and he gives very good lecture notes. I was super nervous going into this class but it was pretty easy because of the lectures.
Really tangible and smart. A lot of math profs are so smart they don't know how to dumb it down for students, but he explains stuff really well. He also always answers students' questions, even in WTHR 200 (500 student lecture hall).
He is the GOAT. I would totally take again MA162 with him. He teaches in a clear way that is hard to get lost during lectures. He gave homework examples during lectures, which I feel is really helpful. He asks students if they are following up, always answers students questions. LOVED THIS CLASS BECAUSE OF HIM.
Overall it is just a difficult course but he did a very good job at explaining difficult concepts in his lectures. Sometimes he would get to deep into proving why a formula was true.
