Excellent instructor: organized, great lecturer, well versed in his field, encouraging to students, has a variety of visual aids, makes the class interesting and enjoyable,
I don't know what crack this person is smoking, but he is ? His class was sooooooooooo hard. There is so much to know. The testa are unbelivable. 75% of the class got a D or below on the first tests. Expects to study all the time, especially on weeken
I can't say the class was easy but I learned a lot. If you go to class and pay attention you will get a good grade. Made easy to understand diagrams, fun feild trip(although it was on a weekend) and reviews for the tests. Take him.
This guy was unbelivably hard. He expects you to know everytjing and the tests are sooooooooo hard. Expect to study at least 10 hours a week if you want a good grade and go to EVERY lecture. Don't take him. He sucks and hes really hard!
excellent professor, very clear, if you go to class and listen you'll get a good grade, if you dont go, dont take him, you'll fail with passing colors
Mr. Barrie is the best teacher that I have had in Mesa College. The complaints about him making his students study too hard..isnt that why we are in school? Anyways, take him-he rocks!Hee.Hee.
his test are super hard, not worth taking his class if your jsut meeting a requirement. field trips on weekends suck, but are mandatory. His tests cover alot of areas even though he explains everything there is too much going on to retain everything.
Yes, this course was hard. People have a difficult time accepting change and learning geography is a change. If you can be flexible now, you will have no problem in the changes and challenges in life and Corporate America. HE IS NOT SMOKING CRACK!!!!!!
He was a great teacher. The tests were a little hard though.
he is a great teacher. he takes time out to help students and understand geology. i think he has a great professional backround. he makes you really involved and interested in the course ..sumtimes he can be crazy though. you'll enjoy his class. have fun!
Very helpful and nice cheery diagrams. I don't know what people are saying about hard tests. Just take notes, pay attention and you will do fine. Gets a little off track sometimes, but otherwise very good
Funny in a dorky kind of way and teaches very good.
This guy is everything you could want in a professor. Smart, clear, patient, helpful and enthusiastic. There is A LOT to learn but he covers everything in class. Expect to study hard, but know that you won't be blindsided by obscure facts from the text that were never discussed. He's fantastic!
If you go to class and take notes, he tells you everything that you need to know for the test. He is very helpful with any questions that you may have. Highly recomend. No homework too. +++
very very easy, just go to class and take down notes and gauranteed to pass. very clean, nice, but a little dorky. makes for a good easy class.
Really good teacher, field trips are a bummer but there are alternative assignments. Take this class, very interesting and not to much work, if you want an A study for the tests and do the two homework assignments
Hes a cool teacher, really intrested in what he does. He's helpful and not too boring. I would recommend him.
I think that he is a great teacher. You can tell that he loves his field and is very enthusiastic about it. PS - he is not on drugs!!!!
Barrie is a pretty cool guy. His lectures are very clear and informative. If you take good notes in class, you'll do great on the tests, they're pretty easy.
Great instructor, highly recommended!
Awesome teacher .. very helpful .. always willing to give u a change to make up work. I missed the field trip and i was able to complete the field trip on my own.. or complete aleternate assignments .. tests are tricky .. but not too hard... highly recommened
He is a good professor. He give good lectures and he know his stuff. He is a little stiff, and his tests are pretty hard. I can't really say I would recomend him.
I would recommend this class if you have time to study. Its mostly based on concepts and terms. You must attend the class because the exams are based from his lecutres. I did not read any of the text materials, and I still passed. Also, turn in your assignmets on the due dates. He's very funny.
What a great professor -who knew Geology could be so fascinating? To put it straight to the point: Wonderful class and a wonderful guy.
he's a good teacher, and gives you a study sheet but even if u know all that info you still wont pass with B or A on the test, guy is very gay and has hard tests, but if u do all the stuff your guranteed atleast a C

He makes the class so fun. He gets you really enthused in the class and makes it easy to understand the material. We had a sub the other day and the class just seemd to drag. When Barrie teaches it, the class seems to just fly by.
he is a great teacher. i got a B and i am a slacker. very clear notes and study guides. only 3 homework assisgnments and 3 tests. take the 8 week class. dont need the book so dont waste your money. TRUST ME. take good notes. thats all you need for the test, dont over study. tests are easy if you learn whats on the study guide.
I hated this class, he teaches like we're in 5th grade, and is anal about everything, i think he might be OCD. The way that he writes everything on the board would make you think that tests would be easy, but they are not, either you study or fail. He tries to be funny but he says the same joke again and again. If you take it don't buy the book!
This teacher is awesome. As long as you study you will do well. His tests are only difficult if you don't learn the material on the study guides. Pay attention in class and take good notes and you will do fine. He gives you opportunities for extra credit and the field trips are fun. As long as you go to class there is no need to buy the book.
This guy would make a great 7th grade teacher! he is so enthusiastic but its hard to get excited about rocks at 9pm monday night, wile missing monday night football! hes a really nice guy, deffinitly better than taking chem!
Very caring man. Study efficiently, the book alone is a time wasting trap. No doubt, take the STUDY PACKET material seriously, & everything he writes & says. Really understand Earths processes & be able to draw, explain, discuss, & even answer multiplechoice q's. Turn in writing assingments on time. Won't be tested on material not covered.
He draws very well on the board. Explains everything very well. he's a geology nerd, but he's a hot old man. I got an "A" because he brought my two midterm grades up to the same grade that I got on my final. which was an 'A' because it was easy. if i would have done worse on my final he wouldn't have changed my midterm grades.
Great teacher highly recommended! He tells you everything you need to know and lays it out in perfect order. Just pay attention, study and you will succeed!
barrie is a trecky. that is okay however, because his ability to teach is amazing. everything he says is understandable. just show up to class and take solid notes. read, study a week before test because study guides are jam-packed with stuff. hes the man though.
Great teacher. He makes learning about rocks interesting and instead of getting way too technical, he makes it seem much simpler. The study packets are more useful than the text. Take notes!!! He tests on what he lectures about. Funny guy in a nerdy way, but cool and laid back. Taking him again for the lab part of this class.
Great teacher. Take notes, and draw the diagrams he makes. Lecture, and presentations are approx. 95% of information needed for class. Try not to miss class, do all homework, and the study guides. Go to study group he has before tests, and he will help you with portions you are having problems with. Always a big help to see him in office hrs.
Very awesome teacher. Hes so into it that it almost makes you feel bad if you don't do well. He's a great help and is very easy going. Take him if you want to learn and are willing to study the material which he makes easier than it should be. He never gets mad and will do all he can to help you.
Awesome Professor! He can be a little dorky/cheesy, but he really makes learning about dirt and rocks a bit exciting. You can really tell how passionate he is about his area of expertise. I highly recommend taking advantages of all the extra credit Field Labs. They're a great experience to get out of the classroom. Study rock samples in the library
expect to learn!
This class is a bit hard but if you choose to take it Barrie is a good teacher. Just memorize all your notes making sure they cover everything in your study guide and you'll pass your test. It is also important not to be absent. I feel I learned a lot and I really enjoyed this class.
Very nice guy, and very helpful. He will explain everything to you. Tests are kind of hard, but if you attend class and take notes, youll be fine (even if you are hung over). Lots of rocks to memorize. I took him for both Lecture and Lab. His teaching style is great, but he just has challenging tests, so STUDY!
He's nice..... but no matter what you do rocks are still borring....... he's nice though... and ya the book doesnt help, he uses his lectures for test. If you don't get what he says durring lecture you either dont understand english well or you have bad hearing.
What more can I say - this Prof loves his subject and loves to teach. I'm not even a science person but I genuinely loved the class. The fieldtrips are fun too. If you are a serious student and want to learn, then take this class. If you're not, take it anyway - you might be surprised to discover you like science!
I will agree - he does love his Geology! Very clear, and you WILL learn the material if you pay attention. Tests aren't super hard, but homework is somewhat loaded. Very helpful if you get in a bind - I had a family issue and he worked with me (which was greatly appreciated). Will take him again if I can!
It’s undeniable that Don Barrie is an excellent and passionate professor, but if you are not planning major in Geology this will a hard class on you, due to the home work and the lecture style which includes a lot memorization of rocks and studying. So, if you don’t have that much time to spend with a subject that won’t serve you in the future take
Great professor - willing to help outside of class and loves what he teaches! Difficult course if you're not an Earth Sci major, but if you study, an A isn't out of reach. This class gave me a whole new appreciation for San Diego's diverse terrain, and many thanks to Professor Barrie for encouraging us to get out and explore our local areas!
He's got a grim sense of humor which is chill, one of the best teachers i had at mesa before transferring. Seriously, memorize his lectures, and write EVERYTHING thats on that board, ez grader on hws, it was an EASY A, lazy kids around me just couldn't tough it out with the "boring" rocks, try learning calc with a loopy Russian lady
Prof. Barrie is genuinely interested in teaching. His exams are challenging but he does provide a study guide so that you will be prepared for his exams.
This guy rules! Keeps lectures pretty fun and interesting and his notes are very detailed. I noticed he writes at a students pace on the board, unlike these lightning handed teachers in my other classes. Geniunely cares about his students and the subject. Homework is easy and tests are a little hard, just study and you'll be fine. Great guy.
He rocks! Pun intended. Great class, great professor. If you even kinda like geology please take his classes.
He's honestly one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. His tests are pretty hard, but he gives you plenty of other ways to make up it up in points, including fun extra credit. He's really interested in the subject, and cute in a nerdy prof kinda way ;) I actually liked going to class, which is not something I Say often. HES THE BEST!!!
Hard class. I took it and got a D, but retook it w/another professor and got an A. He dosen't let anyone slip by and doubt that he curves his grades one bit. He is very helpful, but can get moody at times. For example, better not let him catch you even holding your cell phone, even during a break!! Not a great class, but not so bad.
Excellent, if not a bit goofy. His explanation are very succinct and displays a true passion for the subject. I didn't find his test to be very difficult. Highly recommend
A great professor who's clearly passionate about the material. Competent and clear. More than willing to work with students' needs, but don't expect to slide by.
Prof. Barrie was wonderful. I had him both online and in class and he's willing to do whatever it takes for you to get a good grade. His in-class exams are more difficult than online but that might just be me. I would definitely recommend this teacher to anyone even thinking about taking Geology. He Rocks =)
He is perhaps one of the best instructors at Mesa. He's very passionate about his subject, Geology, and is always willing to go the extra mile in assisting you. He takes his students on field trips throught the semester to places such as Tourmaline Beach and the Anza Borrego Desert. Take him for Geology and Geology Lab!
He was a great teacher and very fair teacher. Everything was straightfoward. He was very helpfull and always available
Great class, I will tell all my friends to take his class. I took the OL class so much fun. He is very passionate about geology. He is extremely helpful. I have learned so much! Very easy!
Prof. Barrie is an awesome instructor. Lots of work required but if you keep up on it and attend all the lectures you'll do fine. He is very passionate about Geology and does an excellent job teaching it.
This guy is pretty solid if you need a science class.Happy to answer extra questions, stay late, offer extra credit....LOTS of extra credit. If you want to sleep in class, take someone else.Text is for homework.Tests are tricky in that they get you to think about processes, not just definitions.Understand why things happen, not just that they happen.
Solid.Look at his ratings. You use the lab manual every week.He offers lots of extra credit and grades labs pretty easily. You need to understand the material and memorization is part of the class but he also makes you work out things on the tests.12 labs, 2 field labs,3 tests and more extra credit than you can handle.
After invoking my right for a DSPS accommodation of extended time of double and doing well on the first of three exams the professor/teacher thought that it was essentially an open-book exam for me and so/because he wanted to test my knowledge of the ciriculum decided to give me more discussion questions, so in the end, I got a B+/exams and A/class
I took lecture and lab with Don, He is an excellent professor and makes the course work fun and interesting. Great guy, great field trips, highly suggest taking lab and lecture both in one semester both with him, it cuts study time in half! Very Fun and over all one of the best teachers at MESA
Excellent teacher, very passionate about his work. Must attend class because test is 100% from lecture. Test are pretty hard but he gives extra credit and has review sessions. You will do well if you IF ATTEND CLASS
Prof Barrie is pretty good. Seems like all the retards took the same class i did though. If you want to get science over-and-done-with, he is your man. If you take science seriously, I'd take someone else. He teaches at a highschool level to people with a high school mantality. Easy Honors class!
Professor Barrie makes the class interesting. It is pretty difficult though. I got an 81% in the class and that is my lowest grade I have had at Mesa. If you go to class everyday and take proper notes, a good grade is within reach. Not for slackers
Excellent Class and an excellent teacher. 3 Homework assignments for the whole semester (13 or so hrs. of work). His tests are hard, but if you study for them you will be fine. This is NOT a class for slackers. If you want a teacher that you learn something from who has retarded but funny jokes this is your guy.
Great Teacher!!!! Seems to enjoy teaching the final was none cumulative so that took a lot of stress off of everyone. If you study and attend the pre test study groups you will be fine.
Took lecture short term online, and lab on campus. Both were great. I really enjoyed the class, he made lectures and labs interesting.Be prepared to stay in lab for close to the entire time. From talking to students in regular lecture, the online one sounded easier, you just have to watch the deadlines.Chapter questions are A LOT so don't put it off!
Quite difficult really. Choose an easier physical science class if you need it to transfer.
Although attendance is mandatory and the exams are extremely difficult. If you do all the homework and the varios extra credit opportunites he offers you will pass the class. Go to the Lake Morena overnight,he sings around the campfire and theres really good food. He's a really good guy,u may not like the subject but he loves it and it shows=)
Took online class. LOVE THIS TEACHER! He has a passion that comes through and really makes the course interesting. Gives amazing study guides for everything and holds online study session night before exam via chat and covers everything. Has 2 optional fieldtrips and offers extra credit. You really learn alot and it is interesting stuff. Love him!!
Must attend class for points... tons of HW!!!! TONS!!! 1 mandatory F-trip... lots of ex-credit if you have time to do it when he has it scheduled.. Professor makes you stay the entire class, 99% of the time. Class is interesting, but the tests are annoying. Has you study for stuff that isnt on the test!!! Too much busy work... got a B with work!
Although I took his online class, I find Prof. Barrie a passionate teacher, he answered my emails promptly and gave great feedback and advice from homework to tests. He also did not make the online class dull and he incorporated materials outside of the text, i.e. field trips and other interactive activities. Not easy at all but recommended.
Excellent teacher. labs were difficult and we often needed help from him- but he was always more than willing to help. study the way he tells you to- don't BS labs just so you can leave eary. he will always help you- don't be a slacker. office hours are helpful! Field trips are worth your time. Plus he has a cute butt and friendly demeanor.
good outlining of lecture notes on board, so that if you copy them all, you will get most/all of the lecture. Good field trips to show real time geological evidence for more understanding. Understandable and has a passion for geology. Great instructor!
must attend class--2 absences and your dropped, 4 hmk assignments from textbook, tests arent too hard as long as you study the handouts and pay attention in class
I'm not a science person by any means, but I really enjoyed going to this class, week after week. You can tell that geology is Barrie's life, not just something he teaches. He gives you lots of opportunities to succeed with extra credit lectures and field trips, all of which make geology more accessible. Definitely take this class for your GE req.
Online course. Really nice and helpful, lots of communication with professor. I didn't read the textbook but he makes study guides that are better than the real thing, but you need the book to know what questions to answer for the homework. If you're good at science classes then this class is easy.
such a nice teacher.i dont think i have ever had a teacher nicer than him.his jokes are really geology corny but it makes it fun. i took the online class and his lectures were extremely helpful and very clear. he wrote it out as if he would be talking to you in class so it was really easy to understand. go to the overnight field trip! so much fun!
Makes complicated concepts clear & easy to understand. Picky with deadlines, so must turn stuff in on time. Problem - his Earthworks Scenarios. Yes, he took time to prepare them, but I don't see why he needs to make non-working-barely-scraping-by students pay $30 for them when they can easily be made available online or distributed in class.
Passive aggressive. Super lame too, was always a smart a$$ to me, didn't like him. Just my 2c.
Shame on you Barrie. He makes you buy a workbook he could have put online(you dont even use half of it)His test are unmanageable. The class avg and median on all 3 test were 62%..no lie. He teaches his class like high school. Alot of pure memorization. He hates phones and disrupts class rudely to embarrass and power trip.Dont take him you have to!!!!
Took his online course. You do not need the book so don't buy it. He makes study guides that are a summarization of the book. He tells you to study "everything" so you never know what to study for on the exam. The final is cummulative? Really? All day field trip required. He loves geology, but expects his students to love geology too.
He is very enthusiastic about teaching physical geography, but he covers way too much stuff; the tests don?t have nearly enough questions as what is covered. So, you have to over-learn and hope for the best. But, he does offer a lot of extra credit and the A/B/C/D scale is modified a bit.
one of the best professors I've had. he truly loves what he does. extremely helpful. test are not very hard, one mandatory field trip but they're all fun. hardly ever used my textbook so dont bother buying it, you're only going to need the work book. i recommend you take him... easy A!
He is very passionate about Geology, which makes the class more interesting. He also goes the extra mile by explaining difficult topics in a simpler way and adjusting his schedule to help you outside of class. Overall, he made learning about rocks fun, which is hard to do.
Loved this professor. He is very helpful and his lessons are easy to understand. Just show up to class and take his notes and you're golden. We never used the text book. His website is extremely helpful and he gives a ton of extra credit. He's also pretty good looking!
Best professor i've had by far! Do not need book just go to class. Awesome field trips as well.
Incredible teacher. Very passionate, very interesting and very nice. The tests are pretty challenging, but there are other assignments, field trips and extra credit options too. You will have to put in some hard work to get a good grade, but it`s all very interesting. Definitely one of the best teachers I`ve ever had.
I had no interest in this class but prof. Barrie made it interesting and worth while. He's great! He really wants you to succeed. Just GO TO CLASS! Take good notes and study for his tests. Do the extra credit he offers you as well. He just wants to see that you are putting in the effort. I think he was kind and genuine. I would definitely recommend
Overall I didn't enjoy this class. The professor is nice enough. What really bothered me about the class was that he doesn't review in class, you have to show up an hour before class for it. Which I couldn't do due to work. He also keeps you after the test. Also he changed the 3rd homework assignments without notifying the class.
To be honest, I was very excited to take Mr. Barrie's class prior to attending. BUT I was sadly let down when I realized how fake and cheezy his class really is. A typical response to a student coming in late would be, "Oh no! Sure we can give you the handout! It's no problem that we sacrifice our time on your behalf!" Barrie <333 Rocks!
He is one of the best teachers i have ever had! he makes his lectures so fun and interesting. He is always smiling and has a great attitude. He is also very helpful and really rewards your for your effort! he is hands down the best!
this class is a lot of work. he expects us all to be geologists. test are mostly essay questions. mr barrie is a nice guy though.
Took the 8-week online class; really tough, but that I think is just due to the shorter course time. ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. He was incredibly helpful, funny, very calm, caring, and genuinely wants you to do well. Never makes you feel bad for not understanding. Assignments are pretty fun and quick. Nice guy, take him.
So interesting! Awesome class! The most interesting class I've taken at Mesa. Mr. Barrie is so passionate about geology, and explains everything so well. Take notes, study those notes well, and you'll do fine on the tests. Do the work and field trip and you'll get a good grade.
Professor Barrie is professional, but funny. He can be testy at times, but it's a respect thing. Turn your phone off during lecture and speak up when called upon and you won't have a problem. He explains the material thoroughly and uses different methods to get his students to understand. Mandatory class trips are fun and well worth the points
This is honestly the best teacher I have ever had at Mesa. He is very helpful! He is so interested in rocks, that his enthusiasim helps me learn. If he was a boring teacher, not exciting and not nice, I would have dropped the class a long time ago. I definitely recommend everyone to take him for Geology if they need a science class. BEST TEACHER!!!
His exams are HARD. Especially the one that is specifically on rocks. The exams are split into multiple choice and then essay questions. You will be drawing a lot for the exam. He loves the subject you can tell, but the class was a bit like giving birth and i wouldn't do it again
Mesa's Best Teacher! Loves the subject and will go out of his way to help you. Class is hard, super hard. Lots of studying and memorizing scientific names. Test are hard too, but he'll give you plenty of opportunities to keep your grade an A. He is there to teach and cares for his students like no other prof. at Mesa. No worries, he got your back!
I learned more from his class online than I have in traditional in-person science courses. Loved his helpfulness, availability, and punctuality as far as returning emails and answering questions. This is a tough subject, so MAKE SURE you read his textbook. It's written by him and he puts everything into a perspective you can understand. A+
Excellent professor. He gives detailed feedback, makes himself available for 1on1 Q&A, and he obviously cares about his students' progress. Take whatever this guy teaches. Make sure you read his book.
he very enthusiast about the subject matter. he's willing to work with you on problems and missed exams. field trips are extra credit, but 1 is required.
If you get the chance he is an awsome professor and really teaches in a way that is fun. Before tests he does review sessions and his field trips are awesome. Pick this guy. You'll learn to love rocks.
The course was incredibly difficult, however, I believe it was because of my complete lack of skill for science that made it so. The professor is really helpful and you can tell he really wants you to learn.
tests are short answer, fill in the blank, draw diagrams, and short essay. He makes himself available after class and during office hours. Extremely clear and helpful. Awesome professor
Love this guy! Great stories, very clear concepts. He loves his subject and his students. Fun field trips! Go to class, take notes, read the chapters and you'll do great. I wish he taught more subjects I'd take every one! Wish more of my teachers were just like him. I love how much respect he shows his students. lots of laughs & corny jokes!
Don was great. His enthusiasm was what inspired me to take on a science major instead of engineering. The passion in this mans eyes when he saw a student interested in his course was intriguing. Very insightful, outgoing, and willing to answer any question. If there was a higher grade than A, Don Barrie would receive it from me. Will be taking agai
Don's enthusiasm is top notch! He inspired me to take on a geological sciences degree, possibly from his passion for the science. He is always open for any question at all, and is very funny as well as outgoing. Will def be taking again and highly recommend. You can tell he appricaites interest and enthusiasm from his students, just wants effort
I'm currently in professor barrie's class, and it is by far my favorite class! I've been to two different community colleges in the past 4 years and have had my fair share of experiences with different professors, not once have I encountered anyone as passionate about teaching as Prof. Barrie. I always struggled in science, I dont anymore. love it
don't take his class worst grader if you want to protect your GPA better not to take him
He is enthusastic and has a corny sence of humor which make the lectures entertaining in the beginning but it gets old half way though the semester. He has a required online book that I only used for the quizzes that were required to complete, other than that just taking notes in the lecture works fine. 1 field trip not in class time required.
Don Barrie is awesome! I am currently in his Geology class and he is a great teacher, he is passionate about Geology and it creates a fun learning environment. His lectures are easy to follow along with and his notes and diagrams really let you absorb the lessons! Highly recommend this Professor! 100%
He's the best ! His enthusiasm in both the material & success of his students is inspiring. Not once did he come off as condescending. Class focuses on understanding concepts, not brain dumping. Lectures are fun & fascinating, field trips even better. Also, he was my advisor for a research project & was excellently helpful. Geology is awesome !
lectures are long but interesting. I'm not usually a science person but this class was pretty cool. He is enthusiastic and has lots of corny jokes. Online quizzes for each chapter in the ebook but not much homework besides that. we draw diagrams over and over again in class which helped me understand things
I took this professor for the 8-week course and It was incredibly challenging. There are hardly any opportunities for points besides the exams which he grades meticulously. He does offer a lot of office hours which does help . However, If you are taking geology at Mesa, this chair of the department will bring down your GPA.
Tells the most corny jokes, but is a all around great teacher. Really cares about his students! Make sure you try and go on the extra credit trips; they are a lot of fun and can bring your grade up.
Took him for GEO100. He is the best teacher for this course. Show up to his lectures and pay attention and you will pass easily, and can even get an A easily. You must pay $60 for online text to take the quizzes before the exams. I did not need to read the textbook because I showed up to class and took notes. Funny and nice guy, great lectures!
3 test multiple choice and short answer, 3, 50 question homework assignments due before each test, 16 short exercises, 15 online quizzes multiple choice, 1 field trip assignment and give out extra credit. Highly recommend doing all the extra credit. overall grade is curved. Need to really know the vocabulary or else it can be hard to understand..
Online. Lots of reading, homework, quizzes, discussions, 2 mids + final- show up in person. required field trip. I had to put in the work and KEEP UP weekly. Worth it because I learned a lot. Very structured and well organized. NOT THE USUAL BLOW OFF ONLINE CLASS. Worth taking. He's very approachable and you can tell he loves teaching. Best prof!
Professor Barrie is awesome! Very knowledgeable and excited about the material. Interesting class/ never a boring lecture so its not hard to pay attention. show up, do your homework, one field trip required. exams aren't bad if you paid attention
Prof. Barrie is passionate about teaching and very nice person. He truly cares to see that students are grasping the concepts. Also, he draws great diagrams and breaks down the material so eloquently. I hope to be as great of a professor as him one day.
Prof. Barrie was one of my favorites while attending Mesa College, both for GEOL 100 and 111. Good lecturer, does not test on subjects he does not cover explicitly, gives you room to maneuver considering grades, and inspired passion in the subject. Fieldtrips are a good time and great learning experiences. Good dude and a good teacher.
He is awesome, a geologist version of Bill Nye. His lectures and extra credit opportunities are engaging, fun, interesting and effectively taught. He makes sure everyone understands the material. Laugh at his jokes, he is the best! I know and understand far more about my surroundings/environment than I did before.
Professor Barrie is a great professor! He conveys the information clearly and theres no surprises on tests. Pay attention to the lectures and you'll be fine. There's a lot of short assignment but they are graded for completion. I would recommend to go on the first field trip he offers bc they get more complicated as the semester goes on.
Prof. Barrie is an okay instructor. He does a lot of cold calling on random people despite those raising their hands. Often times he does make students feel dumb when answering a question but he does try his best to reassure them. One field trip is required there are 3/4 given. offers minimal points in extra credit. His jokes aren't funny.
One of my favorite professors! Super caring and will help you whenever you need it! Very passionate about his work, so it's always super interesting. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Would take again!
Don Barrie is one of the most respected Geologist professors. He is very creative and funny at times during lectures that will not bore you. He is available for office hours and he often gives great feedback. I recommend Barrie to any potential student who is degree seeking and or a Science major.
Tries his hardest to make class interesting. A lot of in class work handed in which is helpful if you arent a good test taker. Has office hours to help with homework. Gives out straightforward study guides before tests. Is one of the most fair and flexible professors Ive ever dealt with. Plus he tells funny dad jokes. :)
Professor Barrie is one of the best instructors I have ever had! He is funny and takes genuine interest in his students questions and concerns. His lectures are always really interesting and they are easy to stay engaged in. He provides his own E-book so there is no real textbook required. If you do the homework and read the ebook, you'll be fine.
I had not taken a science class in a while I felt it was hard also summer sessions are always fast paste, but very enjoyable. Online synchronous. Great class content, he is a real rock nerd, very organized, funny and passionate about his field. Do the labs and take good notes. You will love learning and looking at rocks. I developed a new hobby.
This is the hardest class I've taken in my college career. It sort of seems like Prof believes everyone is a geologist and expects you to learn this wild vocab super fast. I took the 8 week course and it was soo much work id try 16 if you can
Having Professor Barrie for my GEOL100 class was a real joy. He is extremely caring about his students and their success and makes sure that his lectures are understandable and interesting. Lectures can sometimes be boring, but his sense of humor makes up for it. Pay attention and put in the effort, you will be more than rewarded. Highly recommend.
I really enjoyed Barrie's geology course. Although my final grade wasn't amazing don't let that scare you I was just going through a lot! Overall his class is incredibly easy to understand and his assignments were very helpful and interesting. His lectures were never boring and I loved all the jokes he would make :)
Professor Barrie is great, but, this class was very difficult. I love geology, so I was very excited for this class. But, I soon found that the expectations were far more advanced than I thought a level 100 class to be. Tests were timed and closed book; memorization of tons of terms is a must. Great professor, but incredibly difficult.
Don Barrie is a well-known known face in education which he is the chair of physical science geology and instructor who delivers an inspirational strategy to science and is very knowledgeable of his subject. He teaches online in synchronization which he even records lectures for you to review even after class that every student can relate to.
Barrie is one of my favorite profs at Mesa. Took him for both Geol 100 & lab. Would've gotten an A if we hadn't transitioned online in Sp2020. People say he's not funny and not to encourage him, but he makes the class fun and engaging, even if he is cheesy. I appreciate that his jokes are always appropriate, which some profs have trouble with.
Great class. Lectures are given conceptually rather than focusing on memorization. Explains everything in relation to the real world. Books and powerpoint presentations are easily available. Definitely recommend showing up and simply participating in classes. He will stop and answer any questions clearly until student grasps concept.
Great Professor with a lot of enthusiasm towards geology. The course overall was pretty difficult and you have to memorize many things. I took both the lab and online course. The online courses consisted of daily quizzes and discussions, so theres quite a handful of work but it helps you fully understand the topic.
Professor Barrie is so nice. I took his online 10 week course and it's a lot of work but if you manage your time you'll do fine. His tests were pretty hard and only gave 30mins but I'm not a STEM major so could just be me. He gives extra credit so it balanced. Overall he's a great teacher and I'd recommend him/ take him again.
Really nice professor who absolutely loves his students and wants them to succeed. Quizzes are tough, but i met with him before all of them and that was wayyy more helpful than reading the textbook. He will work with you if you are struggling, but you definitely have to put in the work!
Best science professor at Mesa! He cares so much and makes the material manageable for his students through good lectures and examples. Grades on around 15 assignments, a final paper, a field trip and 4 quizzes. There is a lot of content but if you go to lecture and participate it is easy and fun. He also does helpful review sessions before tests.
I loved professor Barrie. He's an extremely smart man and is very passionate about what he does. Our field trips were amazing! His tests definitely require study time, but he does an amazing job preparing you and making himself available to help. This class isn't an easy A but his lectures were the highlight of my week.
