Professional Ethics
Tries to be very deep but instead comes across very unclear. Karma points will save you after you bomb the tests!!
This guy is so nasty. He's rude to students and takes everything out on us. He thinks he's Socrates or something. He hates Texas.
He pushes his students and makes them think. He doesn't hate his students, he just tries to have fun. Great class, but watch out for random work and Karma points. GOD CURSE THOSE ONLINE POSTS!!
Not recommended for freshmen, most sophomores, or Christians. Most students don't understand that the majority of the confusion and agnostic/ atheist beliefs mentioned are because of ethical theories and philosophy.
this professor is confusing and unclear. if you get him drop him
He's only hard if you slack off. Everyone ****es about him but really he's an excellent professor...people just have a hard time realizing that you can't slack in that class and pass...even the bare minimum to pass requires a LOT of work. He's awesome.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
I took this class in the summer, so it was intense. Yet, I don't understand why people complain so much about this class. I learned a lot, did the reading, kept up with my posting and, thus, made an A. Honestly, people, this is college.
Great teacher of philosophical ways.
He really is a great professor. Im in his Honors Ethics class and I just changed my minor to Philosophy. It's so interesting. And I think he's great. Im sure he's not patient with idiots, though.
Dr. B. is one of the best teachers I've ever had in college. You must read, you must participate in class.... But these are upper-division college classes so this should be no surprise. He is brilliant and loves his work.
His dedication to teaching shows, and as a student I really appreciate that, and as a person I really respect that. I wish more college profs demanded as much as he does. It's fantastic to get a chance to use your mind. --also, his cheezy jokes--gotta love those...
Berkich is very approachable. He's sensitive to student difficulties in the class. When you talk to him, he gives you his full attention. It's nice to have a professor that doesn't condescend because you are a lowly undergraduate.
I love this class and the professor....not only does he make sure that you understand what's going on, he also adjusts assignments if he knows that students are having difficulty...i have heard some people say they did not like him but i must say that i don't understand why.
You can't expect a Berkich course to be easy, but he's never boring. You will *want* to come to class.
I had him for two classes, and he made both of them so fun! A great choice if you want an interesting elective
Fall 2006 - He was a very energetic prof who required no work. The only thing he required was 80 Karma points, or online posting points. I wrote an average of 400 words per posting and only got 2 and 3's so its kinda diff to get you pts. He's fun, just make sure you don't wait till the last minute!!
This class was the hardest and best class I have ever taken. YOu will do some work but he makes his classes so interesting, you'll actually want to be there! You'll learn alot too!
Philosophy of Love and Sex
Get ready to read A LOT!
PHIL Love&Sex. Very bright and funny man. You have to read for every class because you will have a reading quiz beginning of class. He adds a lot of fun quizzes though. VERY INTERESTING CLASS! I would definitely say take this class even if you don't need it!!
really taught me alot this semester
Don't take his class unless you are super interested in philosophy & in debating. He's an awesome teacher and he teaches really well. But its super hard & based on opinions. Beware!
Good teacher. He's nice, funny, understanding and very down to earth. He seems to be fairly intolerant of ignorance, but he never directly speaks out directly against ideas that don't sit well with him. Be ready to read like it's going out of business and take quizes every class. Oh and his midterm is deadly. His final is lethal. Be prepared.
This is the best professor at TAMUCC. He's difficult, but he'll challenge you to be a better student. I suspect those who wrote bad reviews were students who couldn't care less for academia and just came to get a diploma.
PHIL OF LOVE & SEX: Awesome teacher. Requires a lot of thought. He assigns a lot of reading and there are quizzes. The midterm and final can be pretty tough. It is definitely a worthwhile class to take though. I learned A LOT. & it really challenges to think outside your box.
This man is very judgmental. He makes people feel like idiots, when he doesn't approve of what is being said. This class made me soooooo miserable. He chooses who he likes and unfortunately I wasn't one of the lucky ones. =( I originally wanted to pursue a degree in philosophy, but this mean teacher ruined it. Good luck to anyone that takes him.
This teacher is cool. He has interesting things to say, he's sooo funny. He grades fair too. Give this class a try even if its not a required class. You won't regret it.
If you want a Philosophy professor who KNOWS what he's talking about, TAKE DR.BERKICH! He is extremely intelligent, and THE best professor I ever had!! I wasn't looking forward to Ethics, but I actually received an A and LOVED HIS CLASS!! Pay attention, listen, talk, discuss, and LEARN!! You WILL learn Ethics with Berkich!! He is AMAZING!!
Took PHIL of love and sex! it was a great class would HIGHLY recommend! learned a LOT! if you put in the effort you will succeed! he's a great professor!
I took him for Professional Ethics. He really opened my mind to forming ideas and opinions about all sorts of topics. He stimulated my thinking and helped me to appreciate learning a little bit more. His style of rejecting ignorance motivated me to learn more to prove him wrong. I loved his style of teaching, and I had a great time in his class.
His expectations for a mandatory core class are impossible. If you take him for any class (including philosophy recitation) prepare to always be wrong about everything. He changed our essay final, and added another 4 essays. You will NOT make an A if you have him. He will not let it happen.
His classes are ALWAYS hard. He wants his students to actually learn something. I highly disagree with students that say he picks favorites. If you have trouble in his class, ASK QUESTIONS. Go to his office and clarify the issues you have. Things will go MUCH BETTER for you. He always takes an interest in students that WANT TO SUCCEED. JUST TRY.
Although the classes are not very difficult, he picks favorites and does not always help those who are in that favorites category. Not to mention that even though he teaches an ethics class, he doesn't have an ethical bone in his body, and has even admitted to wondering why he is even allowed to teach the class due to his disrespectful "jokes."
I don't have to spend my lonely Friday nights browsing reddit anymore! I just attend Berkich's lectures. Same content.
Berkich can be a difficult professor to deal with; however, he is extremely helpful even for those who are not his 'favorites.' He is an awesome professor and strives for his students to succeed.
Berkich is a genius. But be warned, this class is difficult and requires lots of studying. I was certain I was going to get an A all year and ended up with a B due to my final term paper. But I would take him again just because he's a great professor. I've never learned as much in class before as I do in his. Brilliant, brilliant dude.
I really enjoyed the class. Assignments were all writing and the subject matter's complex, but it's definitely worth taking. Some say Berkich is a hard grader, but he is totally fair and will work with you. He's wise, super funny and flexible, which helps make it a good and interesting class. A dictionary and coffee are highly recommended.
Loved this
His class is great! Took it for an elective credit and it was a breeze!
Berkich is an awesome professor. Witty, funny, and nice; he is truly a professor you should consider taking.
Easily in my top three favorite professors I have ever had if not my number one. Bluntly honest, funny, very knowledgeable in multiple disciplines of philosophy, and has a good taste in music which you get to listen to at the beginning of every class while you take your quiz over the readings. I strongly recommend this professor in any class.
Go. To. Office hours. Seriously, it will save your life
Tons of Fun! One of the best professors I have ever had.
Do your work, and ask questions and you will get a good grade. Dr Berkich is an amazing teacher, tough but you will learn from him. His topics and discussions push the students to actually learn and not memorize. Most fulfilling class I have taken.
This man takes a habit to his student's character. It's not just about teaching, unless you're just there to learn. For some, who seek more from philosophy, on a personal lever, Don's a tutor. Four years ago I was a great, in every way but character. Now, six years later, I can say the teachings have finally made their impact. Thanks for the life.
Taking Berkitch's class is an absolute privilege. He has a dry and crude sense of humor which makes the class so much more interesting. He is straight to the point and genuinely wants his students to succeed as long as you show an interest in your success.
Not many assignments were given. The tests were difficult and confusing. I've never had such a hard time with a class. I studied with the notes that I took and the lecture guides and still couldn't pass. I wouldn't recommend taking this. I ended up dropping the course and losing a lot of money just to save my GPA from getting ruined by this class.
He is a good professor. I have taken him for Minds and Machines and Love and Sex. I will be taking him a third time for another class. Dr. B is compassionate and understanding. Other than bringing politics to the class room I have nothing to say negative. There is a quiz every class (in all his classes) so show up if you want to pass.
He is very funny and a pretty good teacher. You have to really study and memorize the online notes because he does not go very much into detail in class. The tests were kind of hard with minimal studying. However, It is very hard to fail this class because he bases the letter grades off of your class' averages (if that makes sense)
Hes a really good professor, funny, and helpful. The course was kind of difficult but he ended up coming in clutch
Dr. Berkich's lectures are very humorous and engaging, but there is also a lot of material to learn in this class. Attendance is not graded, but it is pretty much required to get a good grade in this class. For an intro class, it's a challenge. The entire class is graded based on papers and exams, both of which are very time-consuming assignments.
So, Berkich is an amazing professor but I wouldn't recommend taking his intro class unless you're really into philosophy. He expects a lot in his tests and essays, so just make sure you study well and you'll do fine. A B is usually really good for one of his classes.
The WORST Professor EVER. I attended EVERY Class. Asked for help. I was so confused and he NEVER returned papers and never even put in MID Term grades or I would have dropped the course. DON'T Take this Professor.
I loved this class last semester! Fun topics and interesting material. I would say that anyone who is closed minded shouldn't take this class, there's a lot of talk on religion and touchy topics. Try to be open minded and open for discussion, he doesn't attack your beliefs he just wants you to understand the logic (or lack of) behind them.
Definitely recommend Dr. Berkich for upper-level philosophy courses! Class discussions are directly related to the essay topics. Lots of reading and writing, but the essays were all only 2 pages long. His classes are challenging, but not impossibly difficult.
Dr. Berkich was an amazing professor to listen to! He was very personable, funny, and interesting. He is very easy to connect to an learn from. Most of his assignments were essays, which I enjoyed. If you attend class, you should have no problem writing good essays.
He really cares about your education, but the case studies are your only grades, so do well on EVERY SINGLE ONE.
Pretty cool professor, makes lecture fun to go to! He's very sarcastic, so to each their own. He's slow at responding to emails and grading, but he grades fairly easily. He always gives feedback on your assignments. He's pretty lenient about late work, he says he takes off points but doesn't. Overall I would recommend him for the ethics class.
I do think Don seems to care a lot about what hes teaching, but Id like to point to a note he made at the beginning of the semester. If one cant explain their knowledge to a layman in simple terms, how can they themselves possible understand it? Don doesnt take his own advice to heart about accessibility, and it shows in his students. Do better
Donald Berkich is the most difficult professor I have ever had. For an introductory course in Philosophy, this was one of the hardest class I took so far. Surprise pop quizzes for extra points so attending class is a must if you want those bonus points. For the exams/finals, it was all essays. He would give us a week to have it done.
Berkich is a good man, he cares a lot about his students and what he does. With all that being said for a intro class the semester was intense and time consuming. Obviously its common knowledge to go to your classes but in this class you must go or you will fail. Think of taking the class like this, its like eating the vegetables at dinner.
Absolutely loved him! I've taken three of his courses in the past two semesters and loved each one. He was one of the few professors I took an intro class with that didn't treat it like a BS class, he expected college level work from college kids. Seeing how much he loved his profession made me switch my major and explore outside typical majors!
Professor Berkich has been my favorite professor I have had a college yet- however, not because his class was just super easy. He is a passionate and informed lecturer. I find that even if you don't read all the material given, you can catch up as long as you attend lecture and TAKE NOTES! Everyone complaining is a wimp that expects no work lol
Dr. Berkich is unprofessional. He is intrusive in his quizzes and jokes about "picking at his students' brains" to write about their "bedroom" lives. One of our quizzes was graded on famous quotes about love being "objectively true or false." Take what he insists is truth with a grain of salt, even when said with sincerity or lightheartedness.
His class has been one of my favorites as a first year. He engages the class and allows for respectful debates. He encourages us to think about the topic, and give our opinion. His class does require attendance though, as he sometimes gives us pop quizzes for extra credit. He pokes fun at us, but in the end it ties back to the lecture and is fun.
Please only take Dr. Berkich if you are interested in philosophy. If you are looking to simply get a core credit then GET OUT NOW. Otherwise his lectures are an absolute privilege to be a part of. He not scared to poke fun at anyone or anything. The essays assigned are short, but not by any means easy. Great class, but not to be taken lightly.
Very humorous man. If you participate in class and attend his open hours, he will remember you and work with you on your grade. The TA held exam review sessions that walked you through the whole exam. That made it easy to get a good grade.
Professor Berkich is a good professor. There are no assignments, so your grade is based on your tests. You have pop quizzes once in a while that contribute as extra credit points at the end of the semester. His lectures aren't the most organized, but he summarizes everything in the website which is great. His office hours are very helpful.
By far my favorite professor at TAMUCC! Attendance is not mandatory, but crucial for his class. Berkich's lectures are very entertaining, and he is such a fun professor! Grade-wise: tests are the only assignments for his class, but does occasional pop quizzes for extra credit! Put in the effort for the class to receive the grade you want.
If you are a Phil major take a class with him. If not, don't, he's too intense. He can also be really unprofessional in his language and attitude. Be prepared to be cussed at and poked fun of in his classes. He talks about sensitive topics every class. That said, he deeply cares about his subject. Only grades are tests and pop quizzes.
I took Introduction to Ethics (PHIL2306) as a first year and the class itself is difficult but I HIGHLY recommend Professor Berkich, he is an amazing professor. The only grades are the exams, which are all on paper and mostly essay questions. Attendance is not mandatory but I HIGHLY recommend going to class, he does extra credit pop quizzes.
Dr. Berkich is extremely funny, passionate and caring for all his students. Like most philosophy professors, get ready for a different learning experience and a guy who doesn't take things terribly seriously. However, Minds and Machines although super interesting, is very difficult to understand without going the extra mile.
You cant read his writhing at all you need to ask every thing. Not good at explaining stuff.
He was horrible, I am a chemistry major and taking philosophy as a basic with him turned out to be my hardest class. He doesn't use canvas so I have to go check a different website and why are we learning discrete math in philosophy! He just wanted to use this class to boost his ego and make us feel dumb instead about caring if we understood.
Berkich is the most egotistical professor I've had. His handwriting is awful and hard to make out. I have bad vision I forget my glasess at home occasionally and I will take pictures of the board. Got called out in front of the whole class for being on my phone he tried to argue with me about it mid lecture which is super professional of him.
Professor Berkich is amazing. I won't say his class is easy, but his lectures are so compelling and exciting it's worth it. He is hilarious and thought provoking, I look forward to his classes every week. He loves engagement, I recommend talking and answering questions. If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Berk, I encourage you to do so.
Very interesting lectures , extra credit pop quizes for attendance, every test there was an outline posted for before hand, provides phone number if you have questions, no homework, lots of extra credit opportunities, very fair grader, 4x6 notecard on every test, very doable class if you put in the work.
Professor Berkich in my opinion is one of the worst professors I have ever had, especially if you do not give a lick about Philosophy. His class set up is based off of 4 exams as well as random quizzes throughout the semester that are at random. There is no makeup for any exam regarding on if you are sick or not. capped at 350 characters STAY AWAY
Would not recommend. He doesn't use Canvas for grading, or at all, so there's really no way of telling what grade you're sitting at. He's also very anti-technology, so you have to take notes on a notebook rather than your device.
A very funny passionate professor. For me his class is compelling and the time flies by. Every exam comes with an outline provided far in advance, including essay questions. If you attend class pretty regularly and take notes this class should be a breeze. Pop quizzes are only for extra credit !!!
theres literally no way to tell what grade youre at. he doesnt use canvas for anything 💀. he makes you use a separate website and his handwriting in class is bordering on illegible. would recommend any other professor for this class.
his classes are just social hour with his megafans, barely teaches, be prepared to learn everything on your own
do NOT get this guy started on elon musk…
i tried to leave after my class was done to get to the other side of campus for another class and he wouldn't let me leave. even though i paid for that class and i stayed for the entire class.
This guy is terrible. He got in trouble for having his own website he had his assignments on, so in return he refused to use Canvas to prove a point or something? On the first day of his class he handed out a stack of 30 papers we had to read before next class and did not allow any technology. There is no way to tell what grade you have.
Do not take if you're not interested in philosophy. He talks super fast. his hand writing is horrible so you can't even read what he's writing. Your grade is determined by 4 exams only and random extra credit pop quizzes. exams are hard and have 2 essay questions. DO NOT TAKE.
He is the coolest guy I've ever met, and he is so knowledgeable and honestly teaches very well... but the way he writes is test-insane. No one can pass his tests honestly. It's so hard to pass above a C
