He is a great guy, and a great professor, and he is far from an easy A. You will have to work hard, or fail this class. If you're looking for easy, steer clear.
My 1st semester O-chem professor for the summer. I don't know if he's a hard professor or if the class is just hard. He teaches really well, and I understood what he taught. You know what exactly to expect on the tests. Take him as a professor if you are trying to learn chemistry well for a professional test, i.e. MCAT, DAT, PCAT, etc.
O-chem is very hard no matter which teacher. Beware he does not curve,Lloyd does!!! The material is very hard to understand; he has better notes than Lloyd. Your grade does not always match the time, and effort you put into it. Tests are very tricky and very hard, 90% fill in the answers.Llyod's are multiple choice and a few fill in the blanks.
Hard class, consumes tons of your time!! Don't overload you schedule!
O-CHEM I and II are inherently challenging. If you want to truly understand the material, take it from Dr. Davies. The tests are tough so be prepared to work hard. He uses class time efficiently, and gives very organized and clear lectures. He's also extremely helpful and his notes are perfect; he should write a book! Also, do NOT fall behind!
Amazing professor; extremely knowledgeable and approachable ? Too bad other professor are not like him. Very hard! OChem is a tough subject and he does not water down the content. Very fair on his tests, you know exactly what they are like. He even gives past quizzes and exams from previous years as study materials. Take him to really learn.
o chem is a hard class but he is a good teacher
Very hard class. Don't overload your schedule, like I did. Was very clear on what would be on the tests and that was nessicary due to how hard they were. The others are right, if you can put in the time you will do fine. If you can't you should drop the class while you can and retake it when you can put the time into the class.
Hardest class I have ever attempted to take. Rewarded with "C" type credit for putting in "A" type work. Lectures very fast paced and can be very confusing. Spent a ton of time reading book and trying to solve problems on my own. It may be better to take O chem from a different professor.
Extremely tough professor. I had him for both semesters of o-chem. Your grade will likely not match the time you put into the class. Very helpful though, nicest guy in the world and he teaches extremely well. I just wish he was a little nicer on the tests and that he lectured a little slower. Sometimes it can be really hard to keep up with him

I think that Dr. Davies is a decent professor, but his organic chemistry class was the hardest course I have ever had at Weber State. I think that he writes especially hard tests and quizzes. However, the good thing about Dr. Davies is that he posts a great deal of study materials on his website.
He is a great professor, but the class is difficult. He is very personable and will go the extra mile for students. His tests are very hard, but they are doable.
I took his 2320 lab and was sorely disappointed. If I had a question on the lab and went to see him about it, he would tell me that he couldn't just give me the answers. I told him I wasn't looking for the answers but just a bit of guidance. Davies just blew me off and said I needed to just figure it out. He also took points off for no real reason.
Really hard class, but he makes sure you know your material for the MCAT and other professional tests. If you are a serious student you can do well.
His lectures are pretty clear for the most part, but he lectures on minute details that he may have only briefly mentioned. I wish he wouldn't stand in front of his work while he lectures too. It is hard enough to understand what he is talking about. Not being able to see only makes it more difficult. Kind of awkward to talk to as well.
recommend if you do not have a job or are taking a light class load.I had to drop and retake due to overloading school and work.he teaches very well(way to fast though)-but his quizzes and tests are really tough.i don't think O Chem is that hard...its just the 'emphasis' grad schools place on it to get undergrad professors to make it ridiculous.
I had Ochem I and II from him, he's tough but if you work hard it is possible to get an A. If you're wanting a curve on your grade this is not the class for you. Do not get discouraged in this class, it will help refine your studying techniques. Do not underestimate the quizes, both semesters these hurt my grade! Best of luck!
Fantastic Professor. If you're looking for an easy professor for Organic chemistry then don't take the class the subject is just hard there is no getting around it. If you want to learn organic chemistry take it from Davis. Outstandingly clear and indepth teaching. Gather as many past tests as you can to practice for exams theyare though but doable
I took the condensed 7 week course which was difficult, but definitely doable if you have nothing else going on. I would suggest that if you take it during the summer, you either don't work or you only work part-time. Davies doesn't curve the tests, but the grading scale is lower (92% is an A). Do the problems he assigns from the book!
Very Poor professor. He keeps to a schedule, and if you ask a question he gets annoyed as if you have disrupted his schedule. No help outside of class. No empathy, no desire to help students learn or progress. Just there to weed out as many pre-med students as he can.
Davies is a freaking Legend. Be prepared to work your butt off for this class, but if I was able to get an A you can too. I dont know what these haters are saying that he never helps, he helped me hundreds of times. My advice: get as many old tests as you can! They will be a lifesaver for you!
Dr Davies is tough but will never give you a problem that you cannot solve. It is very challenging. Read what he tells you to read, do the problems he assigns, and reread your notes, go to SI and stretch your mind. Buy into his system and this class will prep you for the MCAT or DAT. DO NOT get behind. Stick to the schedule he placed before you!!
I posted below "tough but will never give you a problem that you cannot solve" ...apparently I can get A's in ochem but can read a rating scale correctly.
Very tough class, and a tough instructor as well. His lectures are all carefully planned out and he presents them pretty well, but he is useless if you need help outside of lecture. He doesn't enjoy helping students at all. Not sure I'd reccomend him.
If your going to be a chemist major then he's your guy, but if not, and you want to figure out chemistry is the right major you then I wouldn't recommend taking his class. His tests are really hard and you do a lot of chapter book work that is graded that will kill any man.
For an intro course, this class is very difficult. I learned much from his class, but he does give alot of textbook homework. He grades arbitrarily sometimes, giving 60% on homework if I missed 4 out of 60 questions. I wouldn't recommend.
Although this is probably one of the most difficult classes offered at Weber. You will know your OChem by the end of the semester forwards and backwards! Davies challenges you but your retention of the material will be higher than most classes.
Dr. Davies is truly one of the best teachers I have ever had, especially when considering the subject matter which is difficult and pretty boring. He is extremely clear and only holds you accountable for what he teaches you in class. Expectations are clear and tests are difficult but fair. I wish more courses were structures like his.
This course is not easy. His lectures are concise and his exams are fair. It is possible to get a B with hard work and persistence. To get an A you need friends with old tests.
Very Hard class. He is a very nice guy but needs his ego stroked. I don't like teachers that need that. Very good teacher but not helpful outside of class. Very organized. Agree with whoever posed to get an A you need to get old test. The book is also very helpful. The material isn't harder than g-chem, they just make this class super super hard.
the key to this class is time, the textbook and old tests. also he does weekly quizzes that can really help your grade so make sure you take them seriously. they are hard. the tests are very difficult but I thought very fair from what he lectured on. Material from O chem isn't super hard compared to gen chem I think but a much harder class.
He tries his best, but it is a hard subject. Sometimes he can be really unclear but if you ask he will do his best to clarify for you. You really have to study but the assignments help. Great guy.
This class is tough. If you are not willing to put forth a lot effort this is not the class for you. A lot of time outside of class is needed to pass. You need to be able to know how to use the book to be able to pass as well.
The tests are fairly difficult, but it is clear what is expected of you. I have never learned more from any class in my life.
This class made me hate chem with a passion. The professor is super confusing and gets on random tangents a lot. He isn't very helpful when you ask for help and there is a ton of tedious assignments. If you aren't a chem brainiac just do yourself a favor and don't take it. Its ridiculously difficult for an entry class.
Let's face it, ochem is the hardest premed class. This class is not the exception. Lots of studying, weekly quizzes and labs, and the tests were the hardest I ever took in undergrad. However, if you want a good grade on the mcat, this is the class to take.
He is a really weird guy, but he knows his stuff. Lectures were clear and well thought out but often rushed. The tests are hard, but his expectations are clear.
Very tough class, yes, you learn a ton, but mostly from teaching yourself. His tests are very tricky. He isn't great at answering or helping with questions. Expect homework and TONS of studying for weekly quizzes and his exams. I honestly would recommend taking this course from a different instructor who wants to help you succeed.
Overall, this class is a joke. Lectures are very dry and lack passion, but the exams are not difficult. If you are able to read a textbook and use his practice tests/quizzes, exams will be a cakewalk. I was able to get A's in both courses and very high scores on exams while studying the night before. One of the easiest pre-professional courses.
Davies is the best professor to take ochem from! I took Ochem 2 over the summer with him, and he teaches very well! The material is hard, but if you take notes in class, and use the many resources he has available on his website, there is no reason for you not to pass the class. He gives you the chance to earn 5 points of extra credit on every test
The first week when he said that most people in this class get C's I knew I would be in trouble. Don't take this class if this is your first time taking chemistry. He expects you to know a lot and unless youre a chemistry wizard, it is going to be rough for you.
Not helpful in lab, tricks u on tests. I studied extensively for tests and was surprised on nearly every question. Hes hard 2 follow along w/ in lecture: very monotoned and draws molecules very fast. It seemed like he wanted to fail the majority of the class and took pride in that. I thought he was the obvious prof to take ochem from, I was wrong.
Davies is awesome if you are willing to try and if you put a good amount of time into the class. He cares, and is willing to explain if you just go ask him. People rating him sound like they were not expecting OCHEM to be hard? Ochem is hard not Davies; he gives you study materials and he creates the most well rounded ochem ACS students. Take him.
Don't do it. Take Barry Lloyd! I took Ochem 1 & 2 from Lloyd and he is so much better! I didn't pass with davies but passed with flying colors with Lloyd. Lloyd doesn't have quizzes every week or only grades on tests. He does easy homework that helps with your grade. If you want to pass with a good grade take Lloyd. Davies is a mistake take Lloyd!!
Doesn't matter who you take, ORGO IS HARD! But ask yourself, are you premed? Do you want to actually LEARN Orgo? Then Take Davies. Davies mastered the quizzes and content enough to prepare you for MCAT. Make it in his course and you will do well in Ochem on the MCAT. I've seen it many times from ppl who are now in med school.
Davies is the better Ochem teacher and will prep you greatly if you are premed. He is very resourceful and responds promptly. He tests hard, but all the material is there in his lecture schedule. This class has nothing to do with how smart you are, though that does help. It has almost entirely to do with how much grit you have. Get ready to work.
A real gem. Make sure that you know Wilkinson's catalyst (hint: it's homogeneous). Lot's of work, make sure that you do all the practice quizzes and exams possible. He cares about his students, is available to answer questions outside of class, does activities in the mornings, and is very personable.
One of the toughest graders I've ever had. You're likely to get 50% credit on problems when you only make tiny errors. Averages on exams and quizzes have been between 59-70 percent with no curve. I'm have a chemistry minor and would advise against taking Dr. Davies.
Very difficult too pass. He makes you want to pull your hair out. Our test averages have been between 60-70%.
He believes in a reversed classroom, and provides recorded lectures that are two years old. He claimed class time would be spent on homework and extra help, but focused on obsolete discussions. Mandatory quizzes every class, and attendance is required to get 5/5. Test averages were mostly in the 60's with some exceptions. Textbook was a waste of $.
Dr. Davies is a great professor! Everyone talks bad about him because its hard, but no matter what Ochem is going to be hard. He prepares you very well for the mcat. He cares so much about the students and really trying to help you learn. He is a very tough grader but if you put in the work and study his practice quizzes/tests you'll be fine!
Dr. Davies teaches and tests as if you are some chemistry genius right off the bat. He is not helpful in any way to help you succeed in the course. He is prideful in his ability to fail students. Talked to the other chem professors and they aren't a fan of his either. I've loved every professor at Weber State but Davies is no bueno. Take Lloyd
Taking CHEM 2320 and more than half of the class is taking for a second time and they are still struggling with the material because he makes it so difficult. I've hired a tutor, and do chemistry 24/7 and still don't do well on his tests. I understand the material and do great on problems but his tests are madness.
Dr. Davies is one of the best professors I've ever taken from. I was in his 2320 class over the summer (block class) and his lectures are amazing. He's a tough grader and my whole life was put on hold to study, but if you are willing to put in the time (expect 3-6 hours each day during a full semester), you can do really well.
I had a great experience with Dr. Davies. I heard a lot of students complain over the semester but honestly, if you put in your own work and own time it is more than possible to get an A. He is really accessible outside of class and helped me with a lot. You will be prepared for your MCAT or DAT if you take it from him just be prepared to work.
Hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Dr. Davies is exceptional, but due to the nature of the class, you move very quickly. Every chapter builds on the last chapter, so you need to make sure you understand everything before moving on. GET A TUTOR. I am going to take this again in the summer when I do not have to focus on any other classes.
I really liked this class. His lectures are good; I didn't have to read the textbook at all outside of doing homework problems. He has lots of practice quizzes and tests on his website, and they will help immensely. He gives lots of partial credit and a potential 5 points extra credit on each test. He is great at responding to emails quickly.
I had to take him over zoom. All his lectures were pre recorded and done very poorly. I was lost about 70% of the time. Im sure hes a nice guy but wow he teaches you like you already know everything about O chem. The quizzes are so often its hard to stay caught up. Very frustrated.
If you don't pick up chemistry easily, do NOT take this class from Davies. You have to pass the first 7 weekly quizzes with 80%, but for each attempt you take after the first, you lose a point on your final quiz grade. This is the second time I've taken this class and he is very condescending to me because I failed it the first time around.
Write down about everything he says (if it comes out of his mouth it's fair game on the exam). Do every practice exam and practice quiz. Im studying for the DAT right now and so far everything I have learned has prepared me so well. If you dont want to learn a thing take it from Lloyd. If you want to prepare for admission exams take it from Davies.
I would give a 0 if I could. Davies teaches this class as if its some big review, rather than the first time many of his students are learning ochem. He is not understanding in any way, and his grading of quizzes and tests reflects that. Your final grade probably will not reflect the amount of work you put in to the class. Avoid this teacher.
Davies is the worst professor in the worst department. We do all the work (prerecorded lectures, readings, homework) on our own time on top of going to class 4 times a week. He never actually teaches anything and just relies on videos that he made 3 years ago, which have a lot wrong or doesnt explain. Take chem at a different school to learn
When a student asked Dr. Davies for help on a practice question, Dr. Davies said he couldn't help him because that would be "like giving him the answer." His attitude towards this class is you should already know o-chem and this is a review. Literally go to anywhere else to take O-chem.
Your succes in this class will have nothing to do with Dr. Davies. His recorded lectures are so unorganized and all he does is gloss over topics. You will get 1 point for showing up to class; if it weren't for this 1 point, I know nobody would show up to his in person lectures. Average exam grade was 60-70%. At least half the class was retaking it.
I love professor Davies and I would recommend him to anyone taking ochem. His classes were fun and he always took an extra few minutes to explain concepts to those who needed it. He is very smart and wants you to succeed, ochem was the hardest class i've ever taken but I still managed to pass!!! (Barely)
Dr. Davies teaches an amazing course in organic chemistry. I took his class and was able to get a top tier score on the DAT shortly after. If you read a bad review on this page it is solely because the student was not willing to put the hard work into the class. All of my friends that put hard work in got a great grade and learned a ton.
Make no mistake, this class is not easy!! DO NOT take organic chemistry unless you are willing to work hard and study extensively outside of class. Dr. Davies teaches a very difficult subject and requires a lot of you, but being able to master the coursework is very rewarding. Don't expect to get a good grade unless you study every single day!
Do not take any Organic Chemistry class if you are not willing to set aside necessary time, and work hard. Professor Davies wants you to succeed and will help you do so! He is a remarkable, patient, and approachable professor, he provides plenty of resources for success, so sincerely prepare to do your part and ask for help! You've got this!
O-Chem is an extremely difficult class and requires students to put in effort. Dr Davies does a great job of guiding you and instructing on the most difficult things. Do not expect this class to be easy, fail, and then blame the professor like many review here. You must be willing to work hard and Dr. Davies will help you to succeed.
I thought he did a great job teaching. I'm a pretty average student in chemistry, I'm not awful but I'm not the top of the class either. I ended up doing well in the class, and I also had my highest score on the DAT in organic chemistry. Make sure to go when you do the reaction chains on the board as they are very helpful studying for the tests.
Dr. Davies is one of the most genuine professors I know at Weber State. He really knows his stuff and you can tell he enjoys chemistry. Ochem is a hard course in general, so you will need to put in the work. He is easy to meet with and cares about student's success. I liked his videos, and his tests were fair. I wish I had Dr. Davies for Ochem II.
It is very possible to succeed and get a good grade if you put the time and effort in. Dr. Davies did a fantastic job teaching where I walked away actually learning O chem. He really cares about his students, learns their names, and wants everyone to be successful. This was one of the most challenging courses I have taken yet the most rewarding.
Davies cares about his students as much as any proffessor I know. He takes time to get to know his students. Ochem is a difficult subject, and this class is no different, but Davies gives you all the resources you'll need. His tests are based off his lecutre material so there are no surprises. Requires some studying, but great profressional prep.
Learning O-chem is a lot of work. Dr. Davies makes it as easy as possible (still not easy) and his curriculum is relevant and will thoroughly prepare you for the ACS. He readily spends one on one time to help you understand, and he learns everyone's name. He obviously cares. He is a great professor. Highly recommend!
Organic chemistry is always a challenge. He has a clear schedule of the course material which makes it easy to learn. It is a reverse class room, lecture videos at home, and lecture is discussing and reviewing the material. Very helpful and gives you plenty of time to absorb the material on your own. If you put in the time you will get a good grade
Dr. Davies 100% cares about his students and their success. However, O-Chem is a very demanding and difficult class in general. Davies provides lectures, practice quizzes (his faculty website), and practice tests to make sure that you have adequate practice. SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS REQUIRES A LOT OF TIME!!!! Davies will always answer questions!
I started the class and thought that it would be like all my other classes. After the first test I saw that I would need to step it up. Dr. Davies really cares about his students and really helps them learn the material. Most classes are taken to get a good grade, but this class really helps you understand o chem. Be prepared to work for it though.
Dr. Davis cares about his students and wants them to understand o chem rather than just get a good grade. He provides lectures, homework, and quizzes to help you learn the material. He also does reaction webs that really help solidify the mechanisms. Get out of your comfort zone and make sure to participate to get the most out of this class!
Dr. Davies is an amazing professor. In this level of a class, participation and putting in the work will help you to succeed. Dr. Davies cares about his students and he always made me feel like I mattered and that he cared about my success. He was one of my favorite professors at WSU! Dr. Davies is very knowledgeable and wants everyone to succeed.
O Chem is very hard & requires lots of effort. You must move fast & efficiently. Dr. D prepared me well for success not only in his class but also for later classes & my MCAT (scoring 95th percentile on the chemistry section). He's a very caring person! Just get to know him, you'll realize he wants the best for everyone & will help however he can.
Dr. Davies goes out of his way to ensure the success of his students. He outlines his lectures in an organized fashion with high quality videos that I used to help me really understand the demanding concepts of chemistry. In class, he challenges us to apply the skills we learned from the videos and his tests go along well with what's being taught.
The way Dr. Davies organizes his 2320 class is outstanding! I felt very comfortable taking this course. Work is required to achieve an A in his class, but with his help I was able to really engage with the material. His exams were fair and class average was high. His layout is similar to his 2310 class. Stay on top of the videos and you'll do well!
Dr. Davies does a great job teaching a difficult subject. Ochem requires more effort than most classes, but if you put in the work, he will help you succeed. I actully did poorly on my first test, but Dr. Davies helped me create a study plan and I ended up learning a ton! In fact, I just took the DAT and scored very well the ochem portion.
Dr. Davies really cares about his students! O Chem is a tuff class, but Dr. Davies treats his students with respect and really helps you to learn the material. I personally would recommend Dr. Davies for O Chem 1 and 2.
This class is very tough but very doable with Dr. Davies. He is a great professor and cares about his students!
This is the only time I've rated a professor and it's because I thought, while apologizing to another prof for a late lab, "This entire method is so unsustainable." He has a flipped classroom, mandatory class attendance, and SO much homework. Lab instructions are frequently unclear and don't match what we're doing. You have to print the lab, too.
I don't know that I would trust the sudden influx of 5.0 reviews, it seems like bot activity being that not so long ago the rating was far lower. He is a tough grader and his teaching method can be very muddy compared to other ways that I have seen. I learned far more in depth by searching the reaction titles on Youtube and watching them there.
I took Chem 2310 with Davies and ended up having to retake with another professor during a half block class in the summer. I then took 2320 with Davies during the second half of that summer (accelerated class) and got an A, and now tutor for the class. If you use his old practice exams and quizzes and dedicate the time you'll succeed.
Dr. Davies really knows his stuff, but he also expects you to know your stuff. He does a flipped classroom format, so you watch lecture videos before coming into his class then he answers questions in the classroom. Not my favorite form of learning, but he's very good at what he does. His exams are tough, so know your stuff.
Does a flipped classroom with lectures before class and practice problems in class. Textbook was only sort of used. Show up to class because those little participation points really add up. Practice problems are your best friend.
Dr Davies is a tough teacher teaching a tough subject however he truly wants his students to succeed not only in O chem but in their future professions. He is always there to support his students.
I took the accelerated Orgo 2 this past summer, so it was a whole semesters worth squished into 6 weeks. Be prepared to put in a lot of hours studying if you want an A. All exams are handwritten, typically little to no multiple choice. One of the toughest courses I have completed, but going to SI and studying with others will help you get an A.
Love him as a person but he does make the class incredibly difficult. If you can do well you will come out with a strong understanding of organic chemistry, but you have to have a lot of time and the drive to do so. He makes the practice problems not worth anything and all the grade is from exams/quizzes, so it'll be extra hard if you have ADHD
Worst class ever. Multiple students feel like we were set up for failure. This was Davie's first semester teaching 1210 and it shows. 50% of the class is Aleks. He has an exam on Aleks the day before the paper exam, but both of the tests are different. He acts like we're all pro chemists. I regret taking my lecture with Davies.
His class very interesting and he is good.
He constantly infantilized me (and other female students) during lab times, read to us in-class from self-help books by Jordan Peterson, and taught like we already knew organic chemistry (meaning that asking for help was an offense). I only got a C, as opposed to a D+, because I did 60-70 hours of homework a week. Do what my friends did & drop him.
He was a hard grader, and he doesnt offer any insight on how to get better other than there are more opportunity with future assignments to do better on those. He doesnt teach and labs were so long because we weren't able to be in groups. TAKE ANOTHER LAB your better off.
Literally made a racist comment about another chemistry professor in lab. Bro... You should not be teaching college anyway, but more especially after that. Very dry personality.
Do the work and it's great!
I never ware my seatbelt driving to school because I never wanted to make it to his class
Wow. I knew chemistry was hard, but his teaching style made learning difficult. Class was never engaging nor beneficial. I was only doing well in class as I went to SI sessions or watched videos from other external sources.
This review is for Lab only. Dr. Davies a tough grader. He will dock you for things like low yield and not calculating things the way he wants it calculated, even if you get the right answer. He refuses to give you guidance on your report & results, as he expects you to be able to do it all on your own. Theres a WRITTEN, not practical, lab final.
Dr. Davies is one of my favorite professors here at Weber State. He does not give handout grades for sure, but he teaches everything you need you know and expects you to know everything he teaches. This class is very easily doable with diligence and discipline. If you're looking for an easy class, this isn't it, but its definitely worth it!
Honestly, I will never take a class with Davies again. I mean this not in a rude way, but the way Davies taught lab was so difficult. Maybe, if I had him for lecture too it would've been different but unfortunately... that wasn't the case for me. This class was the worst part of my week and somehow it is a 1 credit lab. 0/10.
I took him for 1210 chemistry. He expects you to already know how to do most of the material and doesn't explain much in class. I had to teach myself through Aleks and go to SI, or else I would have failed. The Alek pre-exams and actual exams are very different from each other.
The lectures were very well organized and clear, but there wasn't much support outside of class time.
I just finished orgo 1 with Dr. Davies and he's been a great professor! Please don't let the negative reviews scare you. He does have a faster paced learning style and his exams are tough but he is always willing to help out and explain whatever I didn't understand during office hours. As long as you put in the effort, you'll be fine!
