He is very straight forewardand helpful. He will challenge you, but just wants you to get the most out of his class.
Does not test on what was taught. Studied all the time on my own and with groups and got a B and C on the first 2 tests. Frustrated with amount of studying required and focused on other classes for the third test and still got a B. Nothing but trick questions trying to fool you. Avoid if possible.
This is a great teacher, teaching a difficult subject. He was very good at explaining well, and making us laugh! Anatomy was hard because there is just so much to remember, so no matter who you have, the class will be tough. You need someone who know's what their talking about, like this teacher.
He was rude, arrogant, and really the class wouldn't be that hard if you didn't have to do hours of busy work...hated the class and I love the subject.
Rude and arogant.
Question aren't very clear on the test. Seemed like he tried to fail you and make it so you didn't get a good grade. It was the only class I had that semester and I got a C-. I studied alot too!!
Tries to act tough but is really an awesome & laid-back. Very straight-forward, no surprises! Loves a good joke & laughing at his students. I always cracked up in the testing centre when I came across the "find the lie" taxonomy question that listed "FAMILY: Homan". hahaha (it should be "hominidae" for those of you who haven't taken anatomy yet!).
Great guy, very funny and clever. He knows what he's talking about, and knows that you don't.He does very tricky tests and quizes, and he goes over alot of material very fast.2 five page papers. The tests and quizes are really difficult.Very hard 1090 level class. He makes you know the material.
I think Homan is a jerk. Take the class from Shively. He won't be easier because you learn the same material but at least he is nice and a good teacher
He's a great teacher, but a hard class though. One problem though, he didn't give us enough specific info on how to write our papers and as a result it cost much of the class their grades. He said he wanted five pages, etc...when we got our papers back, anybody who wrote over five pages, he took points off...that is ridiculous.
Lets face it, anatomy is one of the hardest classes for students at UVSC no matter which teacher you take it from. Unlike the other lab instructors, Don will tell it as it is and prepare you for your rough semester. Don't let his tough-a attitude get to you, he will tear you to shreds but will prepare you more than any other instructor could.
Don is an awesome teacher! His class is hard, but so worth it. Don't let his rough exterior fool you, underneath he's just a big teddy bear. He is one of the few teachers I know who honestly cares about students and would do whatever it takes to help them suceed. I definitely recommend him!!
Homan is VERY intimidating at first, but he warms up after a while. This class is extremely hard, but if you work really hard every single day, you will definitely succeed. Homan really knows his stuff and when it comes to anatomy he is the best!
Gets along better with the cadavers than the students.
I had Mr. Homan for anatomy lab. His class is difficult and requires alot of study time (as any good anatomy class will). But he is fair with what he expects of the students and in his grading. He can be rather blunt at times, which can be a bit offensive. But he really is a nice guy deep down - like a big, cuddly teddy bear buried on the inside!
blunt and to the point. he is alittle grumpy.
Prepares the class for a difficult course by pushing them. Knows his stuff. Bottom line I would take him again.
ALL good human anatomy classes are hard. There is no easy teacher at UVU. This teacher teaches hard material but he is VERY clear about his grading and what to expect. He gives VERY USEFUL study tips. If you do well on Midterm and Final, he drops any bad quiz grades that would count against you. Scares the crap out of students, though.
This class is rough and VERY time consuming. If you work your butt off, go to open lab as much as possible, study out of class and be in a study group, you will do well in the class. He doesn't put up with crap, so don't give him crap to deal with!
His classes do the best on the mid term so take him! Can be intimidating but its worth it!
UVU has the toughest anatomy around so don't try to find an easy teacher. They all work together. Homan may be scary at first but he has a sense of humor. He is so clear in what he teaches and what he expects. Don't be afraid of him. He is a good teacher. Get ready to live in the lab!
Don walks around looking like he has been sucking on lemons all day. Smile once and a while and you will find that the world and people are not all that bad.
This was a hard class, but I learned a lot!
Homan is very intelligent, but he can come off as a bit of a jerk at times. He has a tendency to make students feel like idiots. He is very condescending and intimidating at first, but he gets better. I learned a ton from this class!
Homan's labs always do the best on the midterm and final. It's because he pushes his students, and yes, stresses them out a little bit so that they'll work harder. He always throws little anecdotes into his lectures and his tangents can become quite lengthy. This can be frustrating when you just want to hear the terms. Much nicer than his reputation.
Everyone who says he is mean never took the time to talk to him. Mr. Homan cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you want to do well take it from him. He has very interesting stories and is always willing to help.
Avoid him if possible.fool of himself and biased. No matter how hard you work in the class he will make you feel like you are stupid. If you ask him a question he will turn you in ridicule. I never had to experience anything like that in my 3 years at UVU. There are better anatomy teachers at UVU. Do yourself a favor take it from somebody else.
Just so I am clear I didn't want to put a smiley face for that guy. He does know his stuff, but if you are not a genius you basically screwed in his class. He expects everybody to be on top of everything like anatomy was the only class you are taking. I am still in the class. I am doing okay compare to a lot of people, but I still feel underated.
I really love anatomy, and think the subject is really great. This class is very difficult and time consuming. Don knows his stuff, but truly is rude beyond reason. take it from other teachers, they all know their stuff too. He was the only teacher i had at UVU who wasn't willing to work with you. People say he is nice, but i never ever saw it.
This guy is unbelievable! He is disrespectful to his students. He doesn't give a damn about you. He needs to be in another field not teaching because teaching does require social skills and this guy has none. He treats his students like nothing. I am doing okay in the class and I do love anatomy (it's an interesting subject).
However, I can't wait to be done with this class because every mns spend with Don is a nightmare. Believe me there is no appropriate word to describe this (human) being's behavior. Do yourself a big favor (trust me) take it from somebody else. I disregarded the comments here and take it from him and trust me nobody here is lying about that man.
Horrible teacher. Knows his stuff amazingly, BUT expects you to know it before he teaches it. Loves to make students feel stupid. Every comment is just a chance for him to put someone else down. Really any other lecture professor would be better. (i took from shively after and was amazing!) Bad choice to take Homan.
In Don's defense, he is more concerned about his student's learning the material than he is scoring brownie points with them. Dpm may seem abrasive, but if the students who are complaining took the time to talk him they would find a very responsive & invested professor. I took the class from him & loved it. I STRONGLY suggest him for Anatomy!
They don't chant Penis. He has them say Penis and Vagina to get used to saying terms that might be silly in front of our peers. Yes I totally agree, Don can come off abrasive and unfriendly. But he is by far the best Anatomy teacher at UV. This is one of the hardest classes and he will push you to be your best. This is college. Time to grow up.
This class would be so much better for the students if the teacher was more approachable. You can still be motivated to learn the difficult subject of anatomy without being intimidated. His questions are tricky, and seem a bit over the top. Watch the wording on them. He definitely knows his stuff. But this class becomes your life.
ridiculously hard, guy was a jack a** totally rude mean doesnt care about his students ridiculous expectations with his assignments beyond difficult tests that make no sense. made me hate anatomy and learning. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. GO TO BYU FOR THIS CLASS
Don is seriously the best Anatomy teacher at UVU. His classes always have the highest averages on the midterm and final. He might not be the most personable, but will help you. Just realize he isn't like other teachers that let you ask moron questions. Try to work them out on your own. HIGHLY recommend him if you want an A.
Don thinks he's the God of anatomy. He is smart, and he does know his stuff, but he makes sure everyone else knows about it too. He usually is grumpy and unhappy, but I have taken classes from Shively too and I'd choose Don if I had to choose between them. Study hard, read the book, go to class, and you'll do fine. It's hard but possible.
I thought he was a wonderful professor and I learned the information well. Don truly cares about his students doing well and that is why he pushes them. I would suggest him to anyone interested in doing well. There is a reason that his labs got 1st and 2nd on the midterm and final. He is definitely the best anatomy lab instructor there is.
Difficult teacher, but he gets you to his level of understanding. Not as mean as people think unless you are the low in the class. Study ahead ask questions. He is not a God but a demi-god as he states. Shivley is god of anatomy. If you cry about pressure take from justin or change your degree cause you wont make it. Best teacher i ever had.
One of the toughest, but best teachers. If you do the work, you will learn a lot from this class. He was very helpful. I worked 50-60 hrs a week, and went to school full time, worked my butt off and got in A. He will tell you what you need to know, study hard and it will be good
He is very difficult, but a very awesome teacher and he if very helpful in terms of he tells you exactly how to study. Extremely rigorous course, but very useful for pre-medical professions. I would definitely choose him again
Professor Homan taught me more in the 2 months I was in his class, then I had learned all year. Great Teacher, and though he is abrasive at times, he really does care about your grade. All those who say otherwise are wrong, ask yourself if you did all or even 75% of what he clearly tells you to do in every class? Took it twice, got an A twice.
The hardest class I have ever taken. I do not recommend taking anatomy from UVU. It doesn't matter what teacher you have because both teachers give the same quizzes and tests. He stays on topic more than Dr. Shively. If you have to take anatomy here then I would recommend Mr. Homan. I'm warning you though, do not take anatomy here!
Mr. Homan is awesome. Yes, that class is really hard but it's ANATOMY after all. He's a great teacher who makes himself out to be an ornery grumpy old man, but it's mostly a front. Put in your (large) share of hard work and plenty of study hours and you'll do well and you'll be on his good side. I didn't have him for lecture but I wish I did.
Not tricky very straight forward and he writes the tests and quizes. so you are already use to his style which is straight forward. not like the other lab teachers they say they are preparing you for the mid term and final. proof is in the grades Homan's class consistantly has the highest lab scores on mid term and final tests there for best grades
Advanced anatomy with Don is great! The first 4 weeks your learning new terms, but the rest of the semester is for dissection projects. There are three ppt presentations with 8 page papers for each. And a few assignments, but its 80% dissecting. Don is Don, he was really fun to work with for us. I think everybody got an A in the class.
Professor Homan knows what he is teaching. His methods are a little different, however, he did an excellent job emphasizing how important the class really is for pre-med students. Additionally, he was respectful of everyone, and spent time calling people out, but only to their benefit. I would recommend Homan if you really want to learn.
This guy is crazy, but smart. He is from Alaska- So, don't talk about guns, politics, etc or else he will most likely go ape. I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't sleep, but he still functions. He is by far the best prof. I've had.
The reason this course is so difficult is they make it hard to learn from your mistakes. You make corrections on your quizzes in a hallway glass case. Some papers get lost as you have to gather those in an unsecured mail slot in the hall. He does a great job lecturing, but 80% of the class takes the course twice! Too much material covered to learn
They try really hard to make sure that the students are learning everything they possibly can, but they also set all the students up to fail. The whole semester you have no idea where you stand. I ended up with an A- and I got a 54% on the final exam for lecture. A few of my friends got barely lower then me on the final and failed the class.
Straight forward,no nonsense kind of guy. Really enjoyed his class, wish he would "let his hair down" so to speak, very grumpy and up tight. He loves what he does and it shows, he is brilliant yet understands what it is like to struggle. Trust him and follow his advices, he knows his stuff.
AWFUL TEACHER! He runs his class very strict and old school, if you like that you'll love the class. He loves to put people on the spot when going over quizzes. I dreaded going to class most of the time.Very fast paced teacher yet not very helpful. STAs are in charge of answering your questions but they don't know what they are wrong sometimes.
Great Professor. If you want a grade and to skate through life with no knowledge, go somewhere else. If you're looking for knowledge that comes at a price, Homan is the man!
Great instructor, knows anatomy. Tests are fair all semester then you get hit with a Dr. Shively final...look out!!! I really struggled with his lack of people skills in a classroom setting, rigid style and paranoia about cheating. Many students never dared ask a question because they didn't want to be humiliated if they caught him on a bad day.
Was very clear. You have to read the book VERY thouroughly. Know the key concepts/ objectives in chapter and you'll do fine. Very hard final from Shively. But tests were fair from homan.
He comes off gruff but cares a ton about his students succeeding. He scared the crud out of me at first but now I wish I'd taken lab from him also. He knows his stuff, is very clear in his teaching. It's a REALLY hard course no matter who you take it from. Expect to live on campus during the term. Go to ALL the classes and take good notes!
This class is time consuming and awesome. The papers and presentations you have to do can be nerve wracking but I loved the course and being able to work on dissection projects. Be aware it takes a lot of time outside of class time. Don can be a bit rough around the edges but he genuinely cares about his students (even if they don't believe it.
Homan is a great guy. Shively is not. You will ruin your cumulative gpa, and lose your sanity. Take from another school. Shively generally ends up writing the tests and that's where the failing aspect comes in. I would not recommend this class or lab to anyone.
Don treats his students like annoyances. He is demeaning to students and is "put out" when you ask questions. He doesn't come most days and leaves it to his TA's. You have to teach yourself to get through it.
Don Homan is by the far thee best professor at UVU. I have taken anatomy twice and took it from Shively first (HUGE MISTAKE) Shively knows what he is talking about but doesn't teach very well. Homan is the best of the best for lab and lecture. Do not make the mistake I did the first time to take Shively. TAKE HOMAN! HE WILL PREPARE YOU!
As a person, Don is not very nice. My best friend lost her mother to cancer during the semester and he practically laughed in her face when she asked him what she need to do for the classes she missed (I was standing there when this happened). If you memorize the book you will do great. Don teaches straight from the book so if you miss class, READ!
Everyone talks about Homan being so mean and hard but he's not mean at all. If you do the work and put in time in the class you can come out with a decent grade. Its not a "hard" course. There's just a lot to learn so if you take time to LEARN it and not memorize the material. Yes the final in lecture is a joke and super hard but you learn
I truly think the Anatomy section of UVU needs to be reevaluated. Homan is better than Shively but it's still very difficult to actually "learn" anatomy. Between the lab homework, weekly quizzes in lecture and in lab, as well as the homework and pop quizzes, you end up cramming and not retaining information. Take from BYU, the U, or SLCC!
First, take lecture from Homan not Shively. Second, open lab is a must!!! That is how I got an A in the class. Third, I had an F in lecture all semester and then the final came and after that I ended up with an A. Study in groups! Read everyday! Go to class and you will be fine. Lecture is impossible just don't give up.
Yes, he's kind of gruff, and yes, there are stories of him having issues with his temper (that never happened my semester), but I don't think I've met many other teachers who care more about their students doing well and understanding the material. His class is challenging, and there's a reason for that. His students do better than anyone else's.
Pay attention early on in the semester to the way he teaches and the way the lecture and labs are set up. It's really not that bad once you get the hang of it. Yes it is extremely time consuming. (I've never studied harder in my life) But it is more than possible to do well. Done has a high expectation. Study early focus on objectives in the text.
Despite his strong opinions and political views, Don was an excellent teacher. He is upfront with his expectations for the class. If you do what he says, you will get the A.
Mr. Homan sets a high standard for his students, and it's understandable. When you're going into the healthcare field, details and accuracy matter. He makes sur you understand that. If you keep this in mind and put in 1000% effort in, you will pass.
One of the best professors UVU has. Many students disliked him due to his high expectations, but it was clear they just didn't have the work ethic. Read the chapters until you can explain them in your own words, study your notes, and go to class. Contrary to what you've heard, you CAN have a full time job, take 12 credit hours, and get a 4.0.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FROM HOMAN. I received an A in the course but if i were to do it over again I would not take it from him. He is very disrespectful and is not helpful at all. You will feel like a failure the entire the semester no matter how hard you work. Study hard and treat it like a full time job and you will get the A.
I had Don Homan for both lab and lecture last semester. I highly recommend taking his lab. He gives tough quiz questions that will be very familiar to the lab tests. He may be intimidating but he prepares you and is straight forward with his expectations.
I had Don Homan for both lab and lecture last semester. I highly recommend taking his lab. He gives tough quiz questions that will be very familiar to the lab tests. He may be intimidating but he prepares you and is straight forward with his expectations. If your prepared, you have nothing to fear. His class is all about learning from your mistakes
Homan is smart and knows his stuff, but do not take his class. He makes his students feel worthless and like a failure. And whatever you do, DO NOT STA for him. He bullies and intimidates them even though they are VOLUNTEERING for him. I would not recommend him as a teacher for either lecture or lab. The other instructors are much more helpful.
Against popular belief, Homan is a great teacher. It's easy to be intimidated by him, but he's willing to help any student succeed, just be willing and prepared to do your part. The class itself is tough. You have an assignment due pretty much every week and you have to read the book before class. Tests are hard but its possible!
It would be one thing if it was just a really hard course with high demands and high expectations, but it is that plus very little communication and clarity. We are expected to put in 20 hours a week on the class but he takes literally 3 months to grade assignments. Very hard to know where you stand and where to improve your efforts.
Don Homan is a great teacher he seems tough and mean but if you are doing what you are suppose to do he will be helpful. Be ready for ELA and test on the same week. DO NOT take breaks from studying on the weekends. Read over chapter quickly before class, go to lecture and make your own notes. STUDY GROUPS ARE KEY.
Don really knows his stuff. He is however one of the most disrespectful professors I have ever known. I have never had a teacher get angry at me until I took this class. I would just sit in class listening and he would freak out. He also is very poor at explaining stuff. I stopped going because the book was more helpful than he was.
I regret having him for anatomy lecture!! I am currently taking the class from him and am so frustrated by his lack of effort to help student's learn. He is such a bad teacher!! He needs to retire, but this class feeds his ego by breaking students. He seems to enjoy creating ways for students to suffer through his class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
UVUs Anatomy program is rumored to be one of the most difficult anatomy classes and has one of the highest retake rates. Its demanding and will generally be underestimated while registering for classes. Don is the director of the Anatomy labs and is held to strict OSHA regulations. He genuinely cares for every student and willing to help when asked
I had a hard time wanting to go to class simply because I didnt feel like he wanted anyone to do well. Its already a hard class to take and he didnt make it any easier. He continually talked about how no one asked him for help, but no one wanted to because they were intimidated by him.
This was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. I love anatomy, and I loved the class anatomy lab, but this professor made lecture ridiculous. He does not care whether his students fail or succeed. He does not answer questions, and he is very rude. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
Pretty blunt and can be rude at times, but he's always willing to answer questions and help students outside of class. Just make sure you have tough skin. Doesn't really teach the material in depth, but gives out good notes on the chapters. A few difficult quizzes, but he tells you exactly what to study. Tests are difficult but better than others.
Be ready to work. If you think you can take this class with something else, then you should consider that again. He is very passionate about the subject and I love that. I love that he is blunt and very honest. He makes you work and think. Lectures are great. He intimidates a lot of people because he cares about their future.
This class is a truly difficult class. Some people have very strong quantitative and analytical thinking, as well as a natural interest in science. if you're none of the above, this will be an insanely hard class for you. also the "assistants" are some of the above listed and will try to show how smart they are or say "I'm here to talk to girls."
Don Homan truly is one of the greatest anatomists we have today. VERY knowledgable and VERY competent at what he does. Yes, he comes off as tough and "mean" but just be respectful, try your best, and he'll help you. He's your classic "Hard shell, soft center" guy. Has a great sense of humor, and it's a shame most kids don't realize it. TAKE HIM!
don is blunt and his stern demeanor may be intimidating Major key: ask him for help he's actually nice and he literally wrote the textbook beware: negative attitudes are contagious and can derail a whole class quizzes dont matter final exam grade may replace all lower scored midterm or quiz lecture/lab are combined & curved for final grade for both
Use his practice quizzes on canvas. A lot of them show up on the final. Make a quizlet with every single bold term and the image and you'll pass. It's NOT EASY. Your grade is what your Final Exam score is. I failed every quiz except like 3, but did well on the final so I passed the class. STUDY EVERY DAY. I took the block class and it was so hard.
No one wanted to go to class because of the quizzes. Don't worry, the quiz grades don't matter, your grade is based on the final. Use those quizzes as a learning check and try to shoot for getting like 80% on the quizzes. Make a quizlet and study it everyday and use his practice images and you can do it. It's hard but honestly the flashcards help
Why is it changing every semester? I just don't understand. Don makes up everything every semester and when it comes to the midterms and finals is a very stricter grader. You can spend 30hrs a week to pass quizzes but fail the final and your done. there is no reviews just expected to show up to open labs and study 2,000 term and spell correctly.
If you are going to be a doctor, or pursue other advanced careers in the medical field, this class and this professor will prepare you more than anything you've done so far. He's also great for gross anatomy, a lot of bad reviews are more likely because it was harder than they expected.
