Towson lost one of the best professors in the country when he left for Kent. Those of you lucky enough to have him...he'll change your life. Work hard....You'll talk about him for years to come.
You are so very lucky. He was respected, admired, and loved at Towson. Take the class, any class. He will change everything for you. His classes are interesting, lectures are brilliant, class is hard but do your work and you'll get the grade. You will never want to work as hard to impress someone. Fair and helpful. You'll learn a ton and love it.
Kent, Towson want's their Dugas Back! You are luck to have him! Yes it is true he's hard as crap, in the end it's rewarding to know that you leave with so much knowledge. I was a huge slacker, I suck at writing, after I had Dugas my writing improved, my attendance improved and I learned so much.
He's tough. Not gonna lie. There are 2 exams, a 10 pg paper & scene performance. The exams are based on the play info from class, so it's really important to go. He is quite funny though and his lectures are well worth attending. Good professor.
Dugas is amazing! I loved him and only wish he was teaching a broader range of courses. Insanely intelligent and the assigments are well-chosen and challenging.
A-MAZ-ING....I LOVED him. Intelligent, thought provoking, absolutely amazing. One of the best classes I've ever taken and learned so so much. WIsh he taught more....
I love Don-John like a fat kid loves cake!
Don-Jon is wonderful. His classes are so full of information, and there are only two tests (and a performance) to be graded on, but he tests on the root of the information and gives the rest simply to make you smarter. Hes a great teacher.
Absolutely loved this professor...he's my favorite to date!!!
Very passionate teacher, funny. the class overall was very cool.
Really great professor, very helpful- but have to go to his office hours.
This class was insightful. It is taught by an energetic individual who loves the subject. This is the kind of class you want to attend.
Amazing professor. Take this class, you won't regret it. Captivating. You'll work hard, but it will be worth it and you'll learn an incredible amount about Shakespeare and his plays. Unique assignments.
AMAZING class. he really knows is stuff. Makes learning Shakespeare easy as well as enjoyable. Unique assignments. Tests were kinda hard, but he is always opened for questioning. Not bad to look at either
Absolutely fantastic class. Dr. Dugas is funny and interesting and knows everything about Shakespeare. I hated Shakespeare before taking this class, and I never missed a class session! His tests are really easy.
I was in his class for Shakespeare. He was so animated and energetic at all times, and much like a father figure at times with how concerned he could be for students' welfare. Wasn't into acting, but loved it by the end. You will perform a scene in his class so be prepared for that if you take him. The consensus was: yowza.
He's absolutely amazing. Really knows what he's talking about, funny, and very energetic. He manages to make Shakespeare interesting, and talks about all the sexual references. Really great class!
Dr. Dugas is unbelievable! I loved this class - it was totally worth the extra effort that was required. I truly came out of this class loving the dramas we read in class and using them in other classes! :)
honestly the most incredible professor i have ever had. finals are over and the class has been over for weeks and i still think about everything we talked about. shakespeare is brilliant and dugas knows it,and love what he teaches. a really inspiring class. ps. his eyes will pierce thru your soul, and he sees everything. take this class, amazing ex
good professor and truly teach you to understand his lecture, if you hard time to the lecture just go to his office to talk to him, he is happy to help you.very passion and smart professor.
Not enough good things can be said-he's knowledgeable, engaging, creative, funny, approachable, helpful, and encouraging. You will learn from this man, who is a true scholar in every sense of the word. He is very available, and takes genuine interest in the lives of his students. Kind of a chatty kathy, so careful what you say. Easy on the eyes too
Awesome class and excellent professor. You will learn!
There is not enough room here to express how awesome Don-John is. If you ever get a chance to take a class with him, do it, because it will be one of the most worthwhile experiences of your college career.
Dr. Dugas is far and away the best professor I've had at Kent. It's obvious he loves what he teaches. I hated Shakespeare before I had his class, and now I find it interesting! He explains everything on your level and makes it easy to understand. Definitely take this professor if you can!
Love this professor but do not take him for an easy teacher. you can enjoy his class and wind up with a C. But he is a performer so he will entertain you.
It wasn't the easiest colloquium but you learned a lot. He really likes it if you come to his office hours because it shows you care and want to do well.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DON-JOHN. He is incredibly intelligent, warm, welcoming, engaging and an all around great professor. He is extremely honest and he'll tell you like it is. He is everything and more that an honors professor should be. It wasn't the easiest class but it was well worth the workload.
Im not sure theres a better professor at Kent. Makes you work and not easy unless you put forth effort. All around amazing experience.
The best professor I've had at Kent! Made me want to go to class e everyday. Has a great sense of humor and makes you want to do really well to impress him. Even when I missed class because I was sick, he made it easy for me to make up the work. The exams are easy if you listen in class and study exactly what he tells you to study. Wish he taught more classes! Oh and quite easy on the eyes as well!
I had Don-John for both Shakespeare and Fairy Tales, and I can easily say he's the best professor I've ever had. His exams can be difficult, and you won't do well in his classes if you're not interested, but he makes it easy to be interested. I recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance!
I'm in love with this man. The world is a better place because of his existence. Take a class with him or else you'll be missing out of one of THE most amazing professors at Kent State.
Awesome professor. Great lecturer - it was always a pleasure to go to class (I would have gone just to listen). A scholar in the truest sense - very dedicated and passionate about his work. Exams are tough, but he is approachable and helpful.
Not a very good professor at all. Would not recommend. Not sure where the positive reviews are coming from
Not a good prof at all. Does not teach according to the material. Bad all around
Don John is a tough teacher but an excellent one. He clearly loves the topic. His enthusiasm inspires his students and make the class fun.
Smart and passionate about Shakespeare. By no means an easy A. Tests are tough. Definitely come to class or you wont understand a word of the text.
Exactly what I want in a teacher. Gives clear lectures and lets you know what he's going to ask for on a test. Hands down one of the best profs at KSU.
Absolutely ridiculous. This man serves as a model for all that's wrong with contemporary literary studies. He obsesses over feminism to the point of absurdity. Would love to lock him in a room with Harold Bloom. He'd come out crying and filling out resumes to work at Applebees. Avoid if you care about learning something of value.
Hands down the best professor I have had. His lectures are inspired performances that will draw you in. He is passionate about what he does, but he expects passion in return in the form of a graded scene performance at the end of the semester; which can be a blast depending on your group. I highly recommend any class taught by Don John.
He is passionate about what he teaches and keeps your interest the whole class period. He's clear about what he expects if you and is willing to help if you reach out to him. He is absolutely gorgeous and his passion makes him even more hotter.
Don-John is amazing! One of the best professors I have ever had. I took two Shakespeare courses with him as an undergrad and came back for his graduate level Shakespeare course. Would take a class of his again in a second! He makes you work for the grade, but he is fair and his lectures are AWESOME!
Dr. Dugas is one of the best English prof. I have had a Kent. He's passionate, enlightening, funny, and he makes you think about literature in ways you didn't think about it before. He made me have a new appreciation for Fairy Tales. And he's not bad to look at for 75 minutes either.
Don-John gave me a new appreciation for Fairy Tales. Make sure you go to class and write down almost everything he says. Reading the material is essential too since you talk about it in class. His tests are difficult but if you pay attention, take notes and study you should be fine. He's also a hardcore feminist but other than that he's hilarious.
His tests are extremely challenging, they are all fill in the blank with no word bank or help. He uses his class time to just speak about the reading but it's not interesting because he doesn't realize that none of us are shakespeare professionals like him. Only 3 exams. No homework just a ton of reading.
This class (Great Books to the 1700s) is extremely difficult so if you're looking for an easy A definitely skip it. Also skip this class if you're a freshman because it is not a good entry-level course. I don't hate going to the class, he keeps it interesting, but his tests are some of the hardest I've ever taken and I'm really struggling with it
This isn't an easy class, and the tests are extremely difficult if you don't read the material or study prior to them. With that being said, Don-John is a well-educated and fair professor who brings in a new insight to classical literature. If you read the material and study, you'll pass, easy as that.
To be honest the course is a little tough but he is a fantastic professor. He is funny and loves what he teaches. I had never been more interested in shakespeare until I took his class. The tests are tough but there are only a few so its manageable. The book is expensive but necessary for the course.
Professor Dugas is one of the hardest teachers at Kent, but also one of the best. I loved his Fairy Tales class so much, but being graded off of only three tests with no extra credit was a bit stressful. Do all of the reading and never skip a day or you won't pass. He's big on symbolism and things in threes, so keep that it mind on tests.
Prof. Dugas is absolutely the best professor I've ever had. He's definitely tough with grades, but he's also engaging, funny, and extremely caring towards his students. Go to office hours if you can, and given the choice: take his classes!
Dugas is literally the best professor, he makes the class interesting, funny & you can tell he cares about what he teaches. His tests are hard because it's fill in the blank so you definitely have to actually do the readings & interact with the work but he's so nice, so if you need help he is more than happy to work with you & give more detail!
Dugas makes the class interesting, funny & you can tell he cares about what he teaches. His tests are hard because it's fill in the blank so you definitely have to actually do the readings & interact with the work but he's so nice, so if you need help he is more than happy to work with you & give more detail! Dugas is literally the best
Everything is about toppling the patriarchy to this guy. Reaches incredibly far to connect everything in every reading to feminism. Sometimes a story is just a story dude.
Dr. Dugas is the best professor I've ever had. He really cares about his students and makes learning Shakespeare and enjoyable task. He makes you work hard for your grade, but this actually lets you learn things. I haven't committed anything to memory from my other easier classes, but I could prattle off about Shakespeare for hours thanks to Dugas.
I loved his class, but it was also pretty terrifying. You're only graded by three exams - the cumulative final is worth 50% of your grade - so that was intense. He's a hilarious prof, but he is a tough grader, his exams are harder than I expected, and if you don't do all the reading and take tons of notes you're screwed.
I loved his class! He is so intelligent, and knows how to teach. You have to pay attention very well in class in order to get the most amount of knowledge. He cares about his job, and his students. He makes coming to class enjoyable! I wish I could take his class again.
Dr. Dugas is a tough prof, but you WILL learn. Be prepared to spend countless hours reading, studying, and dissecting Shakespeare, and be aware that his tests are harder than rocket science (fill-in-the-blank - no word bank). However, the stress is so worth it considering the reward (don't want to spoil). Take him!
He's easily one of the funniest professors I've ever had, but holy crap, he is also the most intimidating person I've ever met. He is SO well-versed in his studies, but if you're not up to long hours of studying, reading and preparing for class, then you'll be lost as hell. Overall, he's funny but I wouldn't want to be called into his office.
Best professor I've had at Kent. Really wonderful person. Only take his classes if you care about learning and are willing to work hard!
Don-John was great!! I took 2 of his classes and loved both of them. But if you dont read the required text when youre supposed to then your grade WILL suffer!
Great Books is an incredibly tough class, but Dugas makes it enjoyable. However, don't you dare slack off. No homework, just a ton of reading. His tests are super hard and there's only three of them. Doesn't take attendance, but you HAVE to show up and take notes to succeed on tests. Lectures are quite informative AND entertaining!
Dr. Dugas (pronounced Doo-gah) is incredibly smart, and witty. He is very intimidating because he knows his Shakespeare. Tests are really hard, but you have a project that helps your grade a lot. Lots of reading and note taking, but you WILL know your Shakespeare once you're done.
Dugas is a very interesting person and prof. overall. He has an uncanny ability to connect any topic to real life and dumb down complex material so anyone can understand. Not a fan of his teaching style (goes over reading page by page, no visuals), but he is quite entertaining. Grades consist of 2 exams, final, participation, and 2-part project.
Dr. Dugas presents some of the great works of literature prior to 1700 in a really nice way, connecting it to real-life, time-and-place then, and has a subtle sense of humor; he is highly intelligent about a lot of things. You will have to read and pay attention to him, though. If you do, you will have it made! Highly recommend.
Hes an amazing professor! The guy is incredibly smart. He doesnt use any power-points... he just talks. Id record his class so you dont miss anything. Most likely everything he says will be on the test. His tests are crazy hard but the class is worth the stress. I recommend taking this course. He makes learning about Shakespeare interesting!
Please ignore the bad review. I had him twice for two different classes. His lectures are incredibly informative and entertaining. Not a lot of visuals to go off of, he usually just talks. Never had a rude experience with him - he even let my friend (who wasn't enrolled in the class) watch the scene performances! Only calls out students on phones.
There is way too much material, and he tells you time and time again "what I don't go over you're still required to know," so when it comes time for his tests you really don't know what to study for. All his tests are short answers, and they're really specific so not knowing what to study really messes you up. Also, the group projects fall apart!
Amazing professor. He makes Shakespeare so interesting and the lectures are really worth hearing. The tests are very hard and I recommend recording your classes so you don't miss anything. Everything he says will most likely be the subject of the test. I listened to the recording instead of music between my classes. Really enjoyed the class!
Great professor! Requires a lot of reading. The tests are hard and specific, but if you read and pay attention they aren't bad. He's great at explaining things until you understand them and he's very patient. Lecture-heavy class, but he's really funny so things stay interesting. The man hates seeing cell phones in class so keep them put away!
Dugas is an extremely knowledgeable professor. He clearly knows Shakespeare like the back of his hand and genuinely cares about the class and what he is teaching. As a professor, he is an extremely tough grader and the tests were super hard. Theres a big group project as part of the class and most days consist of him lecturing for an hour and 15.
While the tests are worth most of the grade, as long as you pay attention during lectures and study your notes you'll be fine. He's one of the few professors I've had that was actually passionate about what he's teaching. If you ever message him outside of class he always gets back to you. He was amazing even during the COVID 19 issue!
I walked into class with a hatred of Shakespeare and left with a genuine appreciation. His class isn't easy, but you can tell everything he does is out of passion for Shakespeare, his students, teaching, and some more Shakespeare. If you are prepared for the work, I could not recommend his class more.
Best class I've ever taken! It's an entirely lecture based class (so don't miss class) but all his lectures are super entertaining. You should definitely read the plays (or at least watch them) on your own, but his lectures make them understandable and fun. Almost the whole grade is based on 3 tests plus a scene performance at the end of the year.
He was very obviously passionate about Shakespeare and taught it well. His teaching was fine, better than others. His tests are very hard if you don't devote many hours to his class. He acts like you don't have other classes and a job or life outside his class. "This needs to be your whole life" -him talking about the scene u do. Be fr rn.
Don-John is easily the best lecturer I have ever had. I walked into his class hating shakespeare and walked out respecting shakespeare. He calls out the weird stuff and explains the cool stuff. You can tell he genuinely cares about this criteria. His exams were HARD but if you studied, read the plays, and watched them, they were a ton easier.
The best thing you could possibly do for yourself is take one of Don-John's courses. Work your ass off and you will benefit from it. Wow. Hands down the best professor I have ever had at Kent State University. They are lucky to have him. (INLA majors- RUN to enroll in his courses!)
One of my favorite professors! Very old-school guy; while people can find him intimidating, he is actually really sweet & approachable. He gave us extra credit on the final b/c we asked. His lectures are witty, engaging, and informative. Make sure you pay careful attention in class. He is a fair grader, but his exams ask highly specific questions.
His fairy tales class was so much harder than a class titled 'Fairy Tales' has any right to be. You're graded purely on exams, with no multiple choice and purely based off of what he says during lectures. If you miss even one day, you're screwed. In the honors section there are a lot of group projects. He hates technology and makes sure you know it.
Dr. Dugas may appear slightly intimidating at first due to his solemnity and intelligence, but once you actually speak to him one on one he is extremely caring and friendly. If you put in any amount of effort into his class you will do fine.
Class consisted of mainly exams and a performance. Most days he just lectures for an hour and fifteen but he projects well and is really funny. Definitely is kind of intimidating but he is actually very nice and really cares about you doing well! If you go to his office hours, this man will move mountains for you. If you email him, he WILL get back
The class overall isn't "easy" per se, there is definitely a fair amount of work you need to put in to do well in the class, and you HAVE to perform a scene at the end of the semester, though the lectures are super detailed and honestly fun if you get into them.
Wonderful man- the other reviews are correct when they say he cares. He cares about his students and he cares about what he teachers, however, perhaps he cares a little too much. Be sure to take the best notes possible as his exams can be very hard and there's a performance at the end of the semester where you're put into groups.
Take notes of literally everything, go to every lecture, and you'll be fine. Don John gives fantastic lectures that keep me engaged almost every time. While there is a lot of content to cover and memorize, he gives you all of the information that will be on the exams straight up in the lectures. I studied really hard and got an A on the midterm!
Prof. Dugas ran a very lecture heavy course, but was a very entertaining and informative lecturer that made content interesting and covered a lot in a short time. However, the entire grade was based on 3 exams, and he doesn't write easy exams. Be prepared to not just do the readings, but study a lot.
Don-John is one of my favorite professors I've had at Kent State because he made lectures enjoyable. One of the only negative things I can say about him is he didn't use Canvas to show grades. You only ever knew what you got in class. His exams were difficult, but if you ask a smart question the day he sets aside for them, it's easy enough.
I do not know why some people found this class hard. If you read the books, take notes, and pay attention to lectures, the exams are easy. He does curve if the class is a bit lacking in the performance department on the exam, but overall, he was energetic, fun, and is clearly passionate about literature.
Don-John is easily the best professor I've had at Kent State. His class is not easy, but that is inevitable with any Shakespeare course. That being said, Don John makes his lectures incredibly entertaining, and showing up to class/taking notes will make your experience much easier. Probably the best Shakespeare instructor out there.
Professor Dugas is one of my favorite english teachers I've had, and I've loved many. His lectures are very dynamic and if you attend class you will succeed. Most of his test questions come from what he says in class. He's funny and really loves his subject matter.
don-john is amazing! his lectures are super funny, and you're only graded by a handful of tests and your final scene performance. though as long as you show up and take good notes in class, you'll do just fine on the exams! absolutely adored him :)
