Excellent instructor. One of the only good ones in Public Relations.
One of the best teachers yet.
Best writing teacher I've ever had. Taught me more in my PROW class than I got out of first year English. Funny and very interesting!
A great teacher. Funny and encourages class discussion. Best of all, he actually knows what he's talking about!
Don is amazing!
Very nice man, but don't expect to get back your assignments...ever.
When I was attending GMC, Don was the only thing the PR program had going for it. He is an excellent teacher, and is truly interested in his students. I would recommend his classes to anyone who is interested in learning from an excellent writer.
This guy ROCKS! He is the dream english teacher. He creates a fun and exciting learning environment, promotes discussion and is hilarious! If you have a choice in profs choose this guy!!!!!!
Excellent teacher - Donnie is genuinely interested in what you're written passion is about, whether it's romance, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. Very diverse, and "punny"; however, towards the end of the semester assignments seemed to dissipate and I still haven't recieved my marks for my writer portfolio. Overall, pleasant, laid-back and carefree teacher.
This guy is the best. He is extremely funny, and if he wasn't bald you would think he was twenty. Great teacher overall. If you can, take his class. AWESOME.
OMG I LOVE HIM! HE'S THE BEST!
Gives me hope that when i get older i can be similar to this man in terms of teaching.
Donny's great. He's one of the funniest teachers at the college, but you still get some genuine learning out of the class. It's amazing that so few profs have figured out that it's possible.
The good news is I will never again unintentionally use a comma splice. I found him clear on what he wanted and his teaching was good. He did take a REALLY LONG TIME TO RETURN OUR ASSIGNMENTS THOUGH.
I took the creative writing course to learn to be a better writer and the book was more helpful than the teacher. He has a great sense of humour, but he's very unprofessional. Always late and assignments do not get handed back.
He is funny, makes the class interesting, and the textbook is a great read. However, he is usually late for class, doesn't hand back assignments in a particularly timely fashion, and he isn't very clear on exactly what he wants for assignments. All in all, though, he's a great teacher, and definitely knows the material.
Very patient and flexible prof. Knows his stuff very well is very funny. Use to HATE english until his class.
Donald is such a nice guy and he always has class discussions. I learned a lot from him and before this class i would HATE English. But now, I actually enjoy it. Hes a easy marker and is reaalllyy funny! Recommended !!
Mr. McMann is an amazing instructor. He is super funny and keeps the class interesting. He made English seem fun instead of dull and boring. He was always available durning his office hours as well as outside his office hours. At times he was not very clear on what he wanted in our essays but if you asked him he would clarify. I would recommend!
Fantastic teacher, I was disappointed that he wasn't teaching a business section for the winter term.
He was an amazing professor, and he sparked a love for English in me. Before taking the class I was terrified of the prospect of writing essays, and now I am most likely pursuing an English major. The class is also quite informative; it cleared up a lot of my grammar questions. I'm a stronger writer because of it.
He is a good english teacher who keeps all of his classes very entertaining. He makes quite a few jokes during class. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a funnier english teacher who is a bit more relaxed in class.
I love Don! He is the BEST english professor I have ever had. He has and interesting way to make the class more enjoyable and he is an extremely easy marker :) (I got 23/25 on the biggest essay when I did it just on one night with one revising time)
If you're lazy/ a jerk please don't register in Don's class. He is too awesome of a proff to have to drag you through class. Make sure to study grammar he teaches from the very beginning. If you like discussing things in class he will like you. However, please remember that discussing includes listening.
Don is a great guy, very funny and approachable. Class is enjoyable. However, the guy is terribly unorganized and unprepared for class. It took him a month to mark our essays, 3 weeks to mark our midterms. His essay topics are not good, I think he thinks them up just a few minutes before he posts them.
Don is great! This is my second time having him as a prof and I would take him again if I could. He is funny, relaxed, and very helpful. He is really good at leading class discussion and always makes class so enjoyable. He is an easy marker, although it takes him a while. All in all, make sure to take a class with him! You will not be disappointed!
Don is a really relaxed teacher and is a pretty funny guy. I enjoyed his class just because I could go and enjoy myself. He is also good with his grading, he is fair and it's not hard to achieve high grades in his class. He makes good use of the textbooks and makes the subject matter interesting.
Don is a great Professor. He has a great sense of humor, making class more than enjoyable. He genuinely seems to enjoy his profession and it certainly shows. Any time I have asked for an extension on a paper, he gladly announced to the whole class that we were granted extra time to complete our assignments.
Funny guy. Easy essay topics. Helpful. The only thing that bugged me was that he literally pulled grammar lessons out of his you know what. The penguin book is KEY! He would go over stuff from TSIS & 75R+ but tbh I never read a single thing, nor did I read In Cold Blood. There were no quizzes or essays on them whatsoever. I'm taking him again!
Funny guy. Easy & helpful. Was unorganized when it came to the grammar lessons but the grammar quizzes weren't hard, so that evened it out. There were no quizzes or essays on any of the "required" textbooks. I'm taking him again this semester. He makes English fun and bearable.
Awesome prof! He is absolutely hilarious and keeps class very entertaining. He teaches well and is a very easy marker.
Best English course I've ever taken. He is hilarious and interesting. I've never learned so much in one course. Highly recommended.
Very funny prof! He's friendly and jokes around a lot, making english much more enjoyable. His grammar lessons are a little disorganized but it doesn't even matter because he has to little quizzes on them, barely worth anything. He is a pretty easy marker for essays but still put in a solid attempt cause he's not THAT generous.Overall liked class:)
Great teacher, very amusing. Very lenient about due dates :D
great professor. will give extensions if resonable and you ask. funny and great to learn.
Great professor kept the material interesting and the mood jovial.
Don is a great prof, uses humour to keep the mood light in a typically awkward english class. Very helpful and fair. Take this prof if you can
Fantastic English professor. One of the best I've ever had! Hilarious, easy-going, laid-back, and his assignments are not too stressful to do!
he's chill super easy going
The best English prof or teacher I've ever had. Funny as hell, great guy, really clear and tests whatever he preaches hard. His assignments and marking is fair if not a little easy. Do whatever you can to get him you wont regret it.
I don't understand why this professor doesn't have 5.0 across the board. Easy, easy-going, helpful, funny, witty, very understandable. It's a shame I won't have him for 103.
Awesome prof! Makes the class light and enjoyable, and has a very clever sense of humour. Definitely recommend Don to anyone enrolling in English, as he encourages student interactions and keeps the class entertaining- in a subject that is dry and boring.
Good Prof. Very easy going. He's a little slow to get assignments back to you. Easy marker. Loves to make jokes. Grants extensions if reasonable.
McMann is the man! Awesome guy, has a great sense of humor and is great at explaining the material covered. I'm glad I picked him as a prof for my last English class ever!
Wicked sense of humor! At first, his jokes are a bit abrasive, but when you complete the course you come away with a smooth finish: great for the complexion. He really forces you to think; I enjoyed the challenge. My only criticism is that his beard could be longer or maybe a gold tooth would not be too distracting.
First things first. If you're serious about English, don't take his class. HOWEVER if you just need the pre-req, go ahead, he is an easy marker, and is very personable. But English majors be warned, you will learn nothing and not grow as a student in his class. Perfect prof for non-English majors.
First English class I've taken in University and he made it awesome! He knows his stuff and will answer any questions you may have. He is a fair grader and will give you valuable feedback if asked. He takes long to give marks back - but that's my only complaint. Would recommend him to anyone!
Don is a great guy, but I didn't feel like I learned anything in this class besides a few grammar tips and types of sentences. This made for long boring lectures of completely random discussions. If you're looking to improve your writing, this is not your class. If you just want the easy A, he's your man (as long as you already know how to write..)
I'm surprised there is no chilli pepper for him AT ALL; he looks like he could be Sean Connery's younger brother! Wicked and dark sense of humour. Some classes he doesn't teach much but will answer questions. What we have to write about isn't very clear but is made up due to easy marking. VERY lenient with late work; literally SAVED my semester.
Funny with a deadpan delivery. He both cares about the material and his role as educator.
3 hour lectures flew by. He is funny & incorporated group discussion so we didn't have to just listen to him talk. He is a fair marker on exams and papers. In lectures, he makes his points clear and it is easy to know what will be on the test. Beware: It takes him a very long time to give back papertests. The texts he chose were engaging & cheap!
Dr. McMann is hilarious and he is a fairly easy marker.
Don is the best! He's so funny and nice, I actually looked forward to going to his classes. He's an easy marker as well, so even though he doesn't really provide detailed outlines of what he wants on essays, you'll still end up with a good mark. Also, he never minds giving extensions because he takes forever to grade papers.
Always late.. didn't learn much from him, so if you're looking for an in-depth introduction to literature, not the guy you want. wastes a lot of time and didn't get my first grade back until after th drop deadline.. BUT very easy marker and pretty funny guy. If you can write a decent paper, youll sail away with an A.
I took his class because I heard he was easy, big mistake! He is always late for class and never explains anything. His classes only consist of him telling us to talk amongst each other about a question he raised at the beginning of class. When he gave essays back there were no comments and the ten people sitting around me all got same mark.
If you are lucky enough to get into one of Don's lectures, do it. I had him for English my first year as a science student, obviously dreading taking it completely. However, instead of just getting through the course, i actually excelled in it, and i believe it was a lot to do with encouragement from Don. No exams, just 4 essays and 1 quiz.
I took him for both the first year English class. Most of time I didn't attend his classes but if you are good with writing than you will pass the course without much work. Barely wrote quizzes. The class went by in no time. The books he asked to have in class were really helpful might be hard in the exams if you didn't have them but not mandatory.
Classes were fun to attend. He assigns readings and the next day he discusses it with the class. The reading assignments aren't boring. Show up to class, its worth it. You will have to do two papers in his class. There is one midterm and the final. Exams are open book. He marks really easy. I think he's one of the easiest english profs at MacEwan!
He's a pretty easy marker and I found him to teach some pretty useful stuff. His classes aren't boring and he calls a lot on people to read in class. He will take forever to give your marks back. Overall I really liked him and he always tried to crack a few jokes.
Best teacher ever!
Great prof! Very easy course!
I took the class with Don because all the ratings said he was a fairly easy marker. This is not the case at all. I rarely went to class and because of this, I felt he would grade my assignments a lot more harsh. Got average marks on essay's but since he wasn't specific as to how he wanted essays written, it was hard to write a decent paper.
Not as easy of a grader as everyone makes him out to be. He's a funny guy but doesn't give an outline for assignments. Posts nothing on blackboard. Not helpful, doesn't pinpoint error on essays so room for improvement is next to none.
Don is HILARIOUS! He makes a boring english class into an interesting class. In all, he is an awesome prof. The only thing about him is that he takes ages to give you back your grades and he does not answer emails quickly.
He is super funny! Loved his class. He was super easy going. The only thing i found difficult was that he didn't give assignment outlines, so i found it hard to know what he is expecting. That being said, he is super understanding and if you ask questions, you will do great! Did I mention that he has a sarcastically funny dark sense of humour?!
Don is an amazing prof ! He is super funny and the king of puns ! He is extremely laid back and will give you extensions if you ask him. He assigns a book to read but if you don't want to read it you don't have to write your essay on it. Only think I didn't like is he takes forever to mark things and does not give you a clear outline for assignment
Is the midterm and final really open book? What do you do?
Don is a beautiful person! He is considerate of your personal schedule and was willing to give me a week and a half extension because I was busy in shows at my University. He is very relaxed, and will keep you engaged with his awesome dad jokes and lecture topics.
Amazing prof would take again I hope i had him for 102 as well Easy marker
This is the nicest man at the university and the easiest marker ever! If you ever get the chance to take him, do not miss the chance, no matter what.
Amazing prof would take again I hope i had him for 102 as well Easy marker Very funny as well
I love this man.
Don is a good prof who cares about his class. His lectures require a lot of class participation. We were required to write 4 papers, and he took an extended amount of time to hand back the grades which was frustrating. He does allow extensions for projects and wants his students to succeed.
Don was a good first-year prof. He really only cares about grammar and sentence structure, 60% of our lectures were solely based on it. Writing assignments were fairly graded, but he takes such a long time to hand assignments back. If you're not passionate about English class, and it's just a mandatory class, then I recommend.
Takes a long time to mark assignments, Haven't gotten back assignments & the semester is over already. Not impressed . He doesn't write notes on the board, just talks and gives bad examples. Overall a class that I wouldn't take again in my life.
Best English teacher ever! He does take awhile to get assignments back, but that is his only downside. He made class worth showing up to. An all around funny and awesome teacher.
Don is definitely the most interesting professor I've had. He is an extremely lenient person that shows up 10 minutes late for every class, and he seems to make up plans for the lecture on the spot. Sadly, he never has a rubric for essays, and he does not give back grades until the end of the semester which is the worst part. I do not recommend.
Take his intro english classes if you care about your GPA. He's a lenient marker. He is quite entertaining; the classes flew by very quickly. Likes group discussions and it took him until after classes ended to actually hand back most of the assignments. If you are okay with not knowing where you stand for the entire semester, take his class.
Don is such an amazing prof. He's sarcastic and witty, and group discussions in class are really fun. He doesn't mark hard, and there's not very many assignments and they're easy anyway. There was no final, just a double sided single page grammar quiz. Only thing is he take a long time to give assignments back but literally everything else is great
Don is a great professor. He is hilarious which helps keep the class interesting. He marks fairly and is always available to answer your questions.
He is super lenient, and will give extensions. But if you're an organized "need to know" student, I don't recommend him. All I had was a 5% grade back by almost 3 months into the term. Hilarious and smart prof. He is very kind and caring, and very knowledgeable. I really like him.
Classes felt a little useless for the short stories, more useful for poetry and plays. Read the material ahead of time. Easy tests. Slow marker.
tests are heavily based on class discussion so going to class is a must. is knowledgeable but doesnt teach very well. marks hard and takes forever to mark dont expect to get essays back. I dont think I learned anything will most definitely not take a class with him again. hes kinda funny tho
I love Professor McMann! He is so hilarious and makes the class so easy! English is such a complicated course and he grades your papers so easily! Definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to take English 103!! Very easy and approachable!
McMann is a very funny professor. Group discussion are common place, and he is quite knowledgeable. The only quarrel to mention is that rubrics for assignments such as essays are not given, and are not easily accessible.
very easy course, he is a very easy marker and he is funny. he isn't very strict and takes everything pretty much as a joke but in the best way because it destresses you. if you want easy marks, great prof.
Don is such an amazing prof, he cares about his students and gives many activities during the class to make sure you understand the material clearly. There was no final exam just a grammar quiz and it was only one page. Honestly a GPA booster. Loved his personality and his teaching style. 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Don was very funny and caring. Class attendance is mandatory but that's okay because he makes English enjoyable. Grammar is very important to him so make sure you proofread. The only downside is sometimes he does mark things a little late.
Loved him as a prof. He was such a genuinely nice guy and easy to approach to ask questions. The night I was going to hand in one of my big papers, the whole file corrupted and he gave me a weeks extension. Hes a nice guy and a good prof in my opinion.
I really enjoyed Don's Creative Writing class. I admit at first I was irritated with how often we're expected to read our own work in class (I'm sure I'm not the only one who is shy about their own writing) but he really pulled me out of my shell and I appreciate that a lot. He's also hilarious with a great imagination. He is perfect for this class
So funny and quirky. He is very smart and his humor is fast. I missed a lot of his classes and got an A minus. So just imaging what you would get if you went every time. Easy and enjoyable if you show up. Oh and make sure to read In Cold Blood. He gave us a quiz that was one question about one scene in the book that you'd only know if you read it.
Dr. Mcmann prepares some amazing and very memorable lectures. He is a hilarious man, who really cares about his students. He is very approachable, and tries his best to make sure his students understand concepts. However, he takes forever to mark assignments.
He was very engaging and hilarious throughout the class and clearly was really passionate about everything he was teaching. He was a bit slow on grading, but he gave very thorough feedback and thoughtful grades on everything. The wait was for a quality review of our projects and was very worthwhile and educational.
Don is a super nice prof. His lectures are funny cuz hes a funny guy. Nothing much to say about him except that hes a nice prof :)
If you want a generally easy class take it with him, pre warning though... you wont get any grades back till the end of the semester. I barely went to class, only went the days that he handed out assignments (which is in the syllabus). Yes he marks firmly but if you run your essays through grammarly or something you will be fine.
Dr. McMann is a good prof for students who dont need structure and who are already knowledgeable about creative writing subjects. I found that we would do a few readings and then talk about the readings, but were not given actual instruction on how to write our assignments. I had to google what the type of writing even was. He is funny though.
Don is a oddly humorous prof. Lectures are boring and dry but they are optional. That being said, he, along other students do make good points/analysis on the readings so those are helpful when writing papers and exams. Grading is slowwww but fair. Don focuses on grammar too.
Don is funny but lectures are boring as we just talk to our peers and Donn about the readings. Attending class is optional at least! Assignment instructions are very vague as well as the grading criteria, but he is a fair marker. He is open to giving due date extensions too!
Don has dry sense of humor. He made jokes in every sentence, and I couldn't stand them. Pretty much the entire course was: read the story/poem, discuss with peers in class, listen to his bad jokes every 10 min or so. His marking was slow, but it was fair. Graded on 5 things, 4 of which are essay-based, and then 1 grammar quiz. Optional attendance.
Every class was basically the same, you just talk to the people around you about the reading. It wasn't really guided very much, as he would give one topic to discuss but then you would have an hour to discuss it. Pretty boring. He is a nice prof though, and the class is pretty easy.
Great guy, super chill, and cracks a lot of "jokes". There weren't a lot of assignments and the ones I did get were really easy. No final exam or midterm. For hybrid class, he will explain and teach concepts and then you will write in class and everyone will have to read what they wrote and he will give feedback after you finish. Very easy.
I had Don as a professor for the ENG-103 hybrid course. His lectures aren't mandatory, but I would recommend attending. Almost all of his assignments are based on topics covered in his lectures. His assignment instructions and grading criteria are very vague, so if you're a student that needs a lot of structure, I would go with a different prof!
Terrible teacher. He didn't give one assignment back until the term was over, so we all had no idea where we were standing when the finals came around. He also gave me an extremely bad mark, when I usually finished ENGL with A's my entire school career. English and writing is literally my strength, but his marks say otherwise. Don't take him, ever.
For students who prefer to have more guidance, don't take classes with McMann. He's late in replying for emails, he's late in marking assignments. His rubrics are vague. Even the syllabus was kind of vague. He's not the worst guy out there but not the best professor, either. It really depends on the type of student you are.
He's a professor who engages well with his students and provides extensions for writing papers. However, he might want to speak loudly during classes and sometimes you cannot hear what he says. He is also vague when it comes to assignments so you must approach him every time there is something due. So far, his class is very chill and engaging.
Don has dry humour so could be annoying. For me its nice he tries to take the edge off with jokes here and there. As my writing prof, lectures can drag on, but hes an easy marker. 1 rec is to contact him ASAP if you didnt get an assignment back. May get lost in his emails since hes an older gentleman. Hes nice enough to give extensions though.
Do not take his class! The worst professor I have ever taken. He was so confusing. He had no structure, no rubrics, no due dates. If you missed one class, you had to ask someone and people would give you different answers. He doesn't give back anything until the last minute. So irresponsible. He also doesn't explain assignments.
Always arrives late to class and his "teaching" is asking questions that you discuss with classmates. He said he was a slow marker but that he provided great feedback, but I never got one single essay back which doesn't help if you want to find areas of your writing to improve. I wouldn't recommend taking him at all, his class was just ridiculous.
This class was absolutely horrendous, he hasn't graded anything all semester, I have gotten no critical feedback on my work, the course outline was completely scrapped, and half of what was on the outline we never touched and did. classes were only prompt writing, nothing really crucial to the major two assignments. I feel like I wasted money.
