His tests and quizes were kind of hard, i studied so hard and never did that well. I never knew what i should be studying the most. To much material to just study all of it, but he does have his last semester tests in the library that you can use as a stugy guides.
Took two semesters with him, He does a pretty good job, He is there to help. The tests and quizzes are killer, you HAVE to study!!!!
His tests are really hard and he doesn't provide good explainations. He also says he doesn't use trick questions which is a bold faced lie.
He's pretty nice and easy going. As long as you ask him questions, he'll answer it thoroughly.
He is way too picky but he grades pretty well.
Really good teacher, only tests on what he says in class. Homework isn't collected but you are better off doing it.
Very good. Hard professor, but really wants to help. Has a great sense of humor and only one who does experiments in class. (he blows things up as demonstrations, and shatters beakers!). SUPER RECEOMMENDED.
he made chemistry intresting; breaks beakers and blows things up in class which is pretty neat. his notes are very straightforward and clear
The best chemistry professor there is. explains every little detail in more detail and is very helpful. recommended for everybody.
Extremely easy class, he explains material in detail. Just study for the exams and you'll get an A.
I busted my butt and I got a 69.9 and the guy gave me a D. I think he favored girls over guys since air heads passed the course when they showed some clevage. Try taking Cooley instead or Jones. These guys have fair unbiased tests. The judge your work and not you.
i dont know aobut lectures, but he is sooo picky in the lab
his lab is so hard! he is really picky about everythings. He gives quiz everytime before the class.
I HATE HIM!!!!! he's effin crazy about his career. the freak acts like he works at harvard... and treats us like were harvard students. taking him is equivalent to a suicide attempt. hopefully he burns in a iodide salt solution with the devil himself. crazy mofo!
He sux as a lab teacher...he also loves 2 scream...some attitude problems..i wouldnt recommend him...:(
He is demanding, but fair. You definitely have to study and learn the material well to get a good grade. I think if you give the impression of not being a serious student and looking for an easy A, he may not be very helpful, but otherwise he is very nice and always willing to answer questions. I would take another class with him.
Good teacher and very nice. He isnt crazy at all. He takes the time to make sure you understand the material. His quizes and test are very fair also.
I did not like him because he was not helpful. he so picky about everything. he always says "I will take off point if you do...."
excuse me who said his "test are very fair also"? i'm sorry but if you think his tests are easy then u haven never been in his class. or maybe u r don writting all that BS!!!anyways the average in his chem lecture is D and in chem LAB is C i donno but use some logic and save ur life!!!!

Very boring,he is not helpful. Very hard grader
Best Chem prof: ever. Wealth of knowledge and professionalism in chemistry. I'll never find one like this.
I took him for lab and he is pretty picky but it is about important stuff like wearing goggles. His lab quizes were pretty hard but if u study u will do well. He is funny and wants to help u learn if u will try. Also took him for 101R and he was great! I would highly recomend him for lab but not necesarily for lecture.
Solid professor who really knows his stuff and gives you a lot of helpful tips. The class was pretty easy its just that I barely studied outside the lecture, thats why I received a B. Exams are tough but grades fair and you'll do well if you study
Not one student in class got an A and he didn't curve. This is a college-PREP class, not grad school. I thought I was going to love chem, he made it so I hate it!!! Didn't give enough time for exams even though I knew the material (most questions I answered I got right). There are plenty of other profs to take class from. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!!
i took him for lab only. i cant recomend him for lecture since i didnt have him for lecture. but he was a good lab teacher. he basically wrote the lab manual so he knows what he is talking about. picky about certain things, especially safety. study your labs and follow directions and you will do fine with him as a teacher.
He's a good teacher. You should be fine if you read over all the notes and do some studying outside of class. You don't have to take the final exam if you get all A's on the tests. There was one or two people in the class that did this so it's not that impossible.
he is strict, but fair and helpful. I would take him again. review for quizes and tests are always available.
Class aveareges were really low, but he is'nt that bad. he does give reviews for tests and no pop quizes. no extra credit in my class. At least if you study the book you will do fine.
I took him for CH 100A. I really liked this professor. He was very clear, wrote everything on the table, and explained everything very very well. His exams were a little tricky sometimes, but if you study a lot you will be fine. I don't know why so many people in my group dropped this class.... I enjoyed it. Good teacher.
Very thorough teaching. you will learn a lot. Great for going on to other chem classes. Plus he's always happy to help and is easy to find in his office.
Excellent! Study the notes and do homework and you can do good in his class. Chem is hard but his lectures make sense.
This guy will teach you how to solve problems. Take him if u need a strong chem background. Exams are hard but fair. But hey, chem is hard!
he is good if you want to learn chem for future classes, otherwise his class is not the easiest so decide whether you want a good grade with another prof. or become good at chem with him.
This guy teaches great. He tells you what you need to know plus you can exempt from his final if you get all A's on the exams.
Newlin is one of the best profs I ever have! You will understand easily chemistry. He explains, he gives practical examples in class, plus you have old quizzes and exams online. You are well equipped for an A. He is always available when you need help. Take him and you will enjoy chemistry!
His lectures are well organized and follow the text. His exams are challenging but fair. Take him and you will learn.
Tests were tricky. For an introductory class the tests did not reinforce the materials learned. I did not like the class...
Loved this class compared to my other disaster at chem. His explanations really help. He wants you to know this stuff. At least now I feel ready for my next chem class.
i finally understand some stuff. he really wants you to learn and he explains good.
He is not an easy teacher at all. Very picky with the answers that he wants but he is absolutely great and one of the best professors I've had at Germantown. If you want to learn what you need to know, he's the guy to do it with.
Really cool teacher but he is HARD! If you dont try, then your gonna fail! Sorry to say.... There is good news he posts all his previous years tests and quizzes online. Every test will look like the same one you practice. So hes hard but if you commit, the possibilities are limitless.
Great teacher. Makes the material easy to understand and doesn't test you on anything he didn't clearly say in class. You can't afford to miss class, you will miss a lot. I got an A pretty easily
Knows his stuff, but has a real issue with intelligent, strong women. If you're not willing to be deferential & act stupid, he'll screw you. Deducted points from my quizzes he didn't from other people. When I asked him about it, he said *I* needed to do it differently. Maybe it was a bad semester for him, but I'll never take him again.
Work ethic. Only words I can say. If you read the lab report and try your hardest you'll do well in the lab. I did not have him for lecture but his lecture average's were 70s. If you wish to be a chemistry major he's your man.
Tough class and tough professor. Put last year's exams online, but the highest average exam score was in the 70s. Be sure to read your textbook. Fairly generous with partial credit but takes off points for minor things. Doesn't go out of his way to help, but if you go to him, he's willing to help you learn. Good, but not great, in lecture and lab.
Very passionate about chemistry. He gives animated lectures but moves at a moderate pace, so he expects you to keep up. It's better to attend class everyday because he really does simplify things in lecture and gives handouts and quizzes. He makes old quizzes/exams available online for studying and always has time in his office to talk.
Took CH100 A/B with Don in Fall '09. He was more helpful in lecture than in the lab; more open to questions during lectures. Overall, he is an excellent teacher and very passionate about Chemistry. Exams are not easy, expect to put some work in. Gives short quizzes for lab and one final exam. Received a B (87%).
the best college teacher i ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a good teacher, but not easy
He is a really nice professor, always willing to help. However, he's very hard and strict on the assignments. NO CURVES!!!
Good lecture, terrible tests. Told students in class to "shut up" and "get out" (they were rude, but it was unprofessional and upsetting). I did all homework, reviewed all previous tests, attended all classes, still only got first B in 36 credits of As( including microbio, anatomy, etc). Not recommended. Find someone who can teach /and/ test fairly
Nobody got an A in his class in my batch i.e Fall 2010. For him a fair grade is 70% "C"...Take his class only if he is gonna pay for you :)
Don is a great lecturer and excellent on teaching the subject. He is always available for extra help BUT his tests were very challenging only got 3 C's and one B on his four exams. He gives out quizzes every friday. His class was a tough one but i ended with a C. 76% which is actually good. His class started with 32 people ended with 15 just saying
Also took CH100 A/B with Don. Thought I knew what to expect from him for CH101. About 98% of my class failed his 3rd exam...something's wrong there. Overall, he's a good teacher who is intelligent and passionate about teaching, but there were times I felt he secretly wanted his students to fail.
WARNING! DON'S(and he has you call him Don) CLASS IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO WORK! You will have a quiz every friday except for weeks when you have a test. He is a difficult grader, but if you cannot grasp the concepts he is teaching by the time you are done than you shouldn't be taking Chemistry. He is always available for help!
He only cares about what he teaches. He doesn't care about how you do in the exam. Let all class get a C. He moves on. NO ONE GETS AN A IN HIS CLASS.
A perfect example of best teacher + worst grader. Easy B, impossible A. Period. This comes for a 3.80 guy.
His exams are ridiculously different from his practice tests online- much harder- and he seems to enjoy seeing people fail. Don't take him. You will regret. You cannot get an A in his class, and his teaching is not that extraordinary. You will be better off with other two teachers in Germantown.
Took him for both CH100 and CH102. This man can teach but his exams stress so much critical thinking. Do not rely solely on memory or tricks for his class. Recommend for studious students; for average students, look elsewhere.
Don is the good professor but he is not the easy grader..You have to follow with his all instructions and especially in dimensional analytic. I didnt follow his instructions, and did my way, but it also came up with the same result and I totally got no credit for that problem...He's kind of strict in every small details.
He's kind of strict in every small details and if youd dont follow his dimensional analys you will get no credit for your problem on his test.HE IS NOT THE EASY GRADER AFTER ALL.
Ok. CH101 with Don "IS" challenging. BUT, if you thoroughly read the textbook and do all the practice problems and online quizzes, you will be fine. Still hard to get an A though haha but if you put 100% effort i can gurantee that A i possible. Don is usually available for help, and his previous exams and quizzes will help you alot on your exams.
Highly regimented. Weekly quizzes and heavy homework loads. Tests are tough and you will really need to know the material backwards and forwards. You are learning mostly on your own and he just have these mini review lectures during class. Be prepared to work, a lot.
Gives every opportunity for practice. don't expect to come into class and be fed information, he only lecture on key topics, and the rest is up to you to read before class. overall good professor. liked his style.
He wants you to learn the material so his tests/ exams can be difficult. He also expects you to find peer assistance
He is a very difficult professor. He expects you to find student assistance since he barely lectures and his test/quizzes are very difficult. He releases exams and quizzes from the previous semester, but they are nothing like the exams or quizzes given in class. He knows a lot about Chemistry, but he would do better teaching a higher level course.
lots of homework in the textbook, and he is really into doing group work rather than a formal lecture. not a bad professor but you have to stay on top of your reading to understand the material.
Don is a great teacher. Everyone on here complaining sounds like a little baby wanting to be hand fed. You cant expect chemistry to be an easy class. you have to actually try. If you care about your grades and want a teacher who is extremely intelligent and helpful then take Don. Also he doesnt like being called professor just call him Don.
Don Newlin was an outstanding Chemistry professor for my first year of college. I enjoyed his class a lot, and he won't put you asleep either. He explained the content very well. If you try i promise you will do well. You have study guides due almost every class but they really do help you understand the problem. You will work in group assignments.
Don was a very, very nice professor. But he is very strict and isn't lenient at all. Deadlines must be adhered to and you must complete homework and study guides as he actually checks and gives credit. He was available outside of class and gave us extra credit opportunities but his exams were a little tricky and he is a tough grader.
This site is such BS. I read this site on the first day of class and freaked out over nothing. half the class got a 200/200 on the final exam and you get a million free points just for doing hw and study guides.. this class isn't easy but what i've read here is bs everyone in my group got either an A or a B in this class.. I'm gona miss this class!
Don is the best hands down. I had doubts on the first day because I wasn't used to his teaching style but it turned out to be the best class ever. He gives you EVERYTHING you need to pass the class. Do the study guides and all of the previous years tests and quizzes and you will get an A. His exams are not tricky. Do the work.
He's a good professor but he uses flip classroom method which didn't work for me. He doesn't lecture, rather he makes you do a study guide on the topic before class. Then during class he will go over things that are confusing and answer questions. This class is all about group work and figuring things out yourself. He is very strict but nice.
I like Don as a person. His teaching style was not my favorite at first but it reinforced the notion to depend on myself. He doesn't hold your hand and walk you through chemistry, rather he drops you in the middle of the ocean and hopes you can swim! I'm so glad that I took swimming lessons as a child otherwise I would be drowning. Teach yourself!
He teaches with the flip class method which means he won't lecture for that long and God forbid you don't understand what he's getting at because he will snap at you when you ask him a question.
Don, is a good professor. He is pretty chill, just dont make him mad. However, you will need to put in A LOT of effort in this class. His study guides help a lot, so do them. Use everything he posts on blackboard, cause you will need the practice.
Whatever you do, do not take chemistry at the Germantown campus with any professors, not just him. They all do flipped classroom and do not teach. Lazy and tries to do minimal work as a professor. If you ask questions, he will try to get rid of you as soon as possible. Bad explanations. Do not take his class.
A nice guy, but... FLIPPED CLASSROOM METHOD!!! Students do homework and study guides before the topic is discussed in class so its likely you won't know if you're doing something exactly correct or not. He's a tough grader but also tries to give as many points as possible. He's intimidating when it comes to asking Q's but he's a cool guy.
Don is one of the most dedicated and passionate professor I ever had. If he sees that you're serious and willing to learn, Don will put in the same effort to you as well. Don't be afraid to ask for help during his office hours, he will explain until you will completely understand. Do what he gives out in class, show up to class and you will succeed
Can't ask questions because he's mean about it. A lot of group work & he doesn't teach the material you have to read on your own to learn. I overheard him tell a group how are you still on that problem it's not difficult and instead of helping he went to another group to talk about them. However, he has good study guides for all quizzes every week
Laziest professor I've ever had. Expects you to know everything before he's supposed to teach it, barely gives a lecture on it, makes you do problem sets that are hard as can be, gives you old exam and quiz problems that are easy and tests you on the hardest stuff ever. I regret taking him and I would highly recomend you stay away from him.
Don is one of the best professors I've ever had. I had Don for CHEM099 and CHEM131Lab. He is passionate and interested in the subject. JUST DO THE STUDY GUIDES! He is readily available for help if needed and he provides many resources like past exams and quizzes. Like another review mentioned, the past tests he provides is easier than the current.
Professor Newlin was by far the worst professor Ive ever had. He would say its okay to ask questions but would yell at people for not understanding what to do. He made one poor girl drop out because he was always yelling at her for literally no reason. She would be doing NOTHING and he would get mad at her. I was always afraid to even speak.
Flipped classrooms should be PROHIBITED! To me, it isn't a proper way of teaching. If you feel like you can teach yourself everything on your own, take him. If not, your GPA will be ruined. Don is a good guy, and very knowledgeable, but I'm pretty sure his students would score higher if her properly lectured, instead of doing a flipped classroom.
Good professor overall. Do not take his class of you are a procrastinator.
I would rather get run over by a bus and become a paraplegic for life than take Dons class again. Like others have said, your GPA will tank if you have him, and you will develop severe mental health issues. No lie he gets so passive aggressive when you ask questions; drop out of early college rn if you have this prof you have been warned
cried many nights because of him pls go back into retirement
His flipped class could be MUCH better if at least he made proper videos explaining the chapters and everything he expects to to learn rather than a couple 2 minute videos going over a problem or two. I'm not completely against flipped classrooms, but the way he structured it makes flipped classrooms get a bad rep. He answers your questions though.
His flipped classroom makes it difficult to learn new information. He assumes you know prior information and moves fairly fast. His lectures are very quick and vague and the majority of the class is working on classwork with other students. Quizzes every week except for exam weeks. Strict grader and the amount of effort requires is not rewarded.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He assumes you know prior information and is very intimidating when you ask questions; instead of answering your question he flips it on you which is not helpful if you're already lost. The way his teaching is set up makes it 10x harder and honestly very frustrating even when you're putting in the work and studying.
Don is a great professor. Although his exams are really hard they make the the final ACS exam which many people struggle with look like a high school chem exam. He explains things very clearly. There is a ton of homework and lots of reading. If you're not willing to put in the effort and not willing to learn then this class isn't for you.
This professor traumatized me. His class exam averages are low because of how difficult they were. This is due to what we learned in class + homework + discussion not applying to his exams. However, discussion helped with the ACS exam. His personality comes off as passive-aggressive, and his teaching style personally did not suit me. Be ready!
