Excellent instructor, and funny. His grading is a little anal, and marks you down for stupid stuff. But he helps you understand the material and can speek english.
i understand he knows how to teach, but for gods sakes, what kind of professor marks you down for not circling an answer!! oooooor not naming a point, even though u provided it on the chart.. a little too paranoid.
This teacher was the workshop leader for two of my classes in the ESP program. He was disrespectful to students and graded extremely harshly.
He was clear, could read his handwriting, nice, enthusiastic teacher.Quizzes and tests were exactly from the notes. He taught exactly what you would be tested on. But he grades kind of hard and takes off points for minor things.Notation must be perfect
His sense of humor confuses and scares me...I don't like it when a math teacher tries to be a comedian instead of teaching the class, it only makes me more distracted...From the moment he walked in I didn't like his hyper crazy attitude..
he is a weeeeiirdoo...be very careful..if you wanna work really really really hard and get a C!!..then register for this guy...thats how his grading is...you bust your a**.. and he marks you down for nothing...aaand hes very disrespectful
extremely enthusiastic and made me laugh out loud. little anal on grading, expects perfect notation, but quizzes and tests are right out of notes. do your homework! curves the class in the end.
Expects everything perfect, not helpful at all.Waste of your time and money.
I had him for a ESP workshop. He grades the assignments like english papers. Still did not give me any 0s though. Is a nice guy.
Knows calc, but expects you to know everything he does and more. tests are ridiculusly hard and not enough time. avoid him as a prof
Good teacher and is always helpful, if you work you will get an A
Follows a cheat sheet that he previously did long problems on. Dont see how we are supposed to learn something in a class period of what he took a while to do before hand. You are doing all you can to copy it down so you can absorn it later.
I took this class as an ESP section. Don Sherry is a great teacher and I feel like I learned the material exceptionally well. His tests are from the notes, but he is a VERY strict grader. In the end, I feel I learned the material better than my grade reflected (I'm getting an A in Calc 1).
very good instructor
Hard grader. Study the notes and know the material.
*ALERT* *ALERT* Avoid this guy, he'll**** you with the grading when it comes to quiz or test time. His lectures are understandable, but that means nothing when test time comes...
Excellent teacher that has high standards for his students, which is why he is very picky in his grading. He doesn't like to make things too easy, so you are really forced to comprehend the material. Let me warn you this class isn't an easy A. If you like to learn and be challenged, take him.
He's Alright
He's a great teacher and would do anything for his students.
I think every math student should have a class with him. He grades hard, but I learned a great deal from him.
if you wanna get a good grade dont take this guy. 2 out of 30 got an A, most just dropped. I got a D+ then retook the class and got an A without going to class or opening the book. u'll learn alot but it'll set u back so much if you dont pass
This is a dreaded class in the math dept., but he made the class very organized. He was always VERY CLEAR in his lectures, and was always there for help. He had challenging homework that was very time consuming, but the exams (most of your grade) we're MUCH MUCH easier. He's a great professor.
A very likeable guy in the classroom. Grades very hard on homework but not so hard on exams. Seems to care how the students perform and is willing to help if you ask.
Avoid Don! He is a bit brash, but loves his work. He knows his stuff, but realllllly discourages questions. He is not the easiest of the ESP professors to get help from. I can't fault him for being picky. Were I in his shoes, I would probably do the same thing. And he was right. Even if you have to wait a semester to avoid his class, do it.
Unreasonable
Really good teacher. Enjoyed workshop. A little too excited about math...
great teacher
He's a very interesting person.
Nice guy and all, but the way his class was set up was not the best. Took him, and then ended up having to retake the class the next semester. If you are really good in math, though, this guy might be good for you. If you're not strong in math...better find a different prof.

He definetly knows his stuff, but his setup of the class was real bad. I was often confused if i was taking math or english? Oh yea and dont try to debate him he is strict on his opinion and will just walk away like a child.
Don Sherry is the MAN!!! Dont get me wrong, the class isnt a walk in the park but if you stay on your p's and q's then you have no choice but to get an A or B out of the class.
Don is a bit harsh on teaching. But very enthusiastic! As long as u try to help yourself first and don't intterupt while he is teaching, u can click with what he is saying. Good teacher.
Don is very enthusiastic but he discourages question. He won’t slow down for any reason. He has a very weird personality where he won’t communicate with anybody if its not math related. His lectures are excellent. The notes are very important. The quizzes are unnecessarily hard. But tests are moderate and gets easier later. If you are excellent in
biggest **** in the world DO NOT TAKE HIM
Don is an "old school" dedicated teacher, who believes that giving students an easy ride does not benefit them in the long run or prepare them for the future. If you want value for money, take his class.
such a BAD teacher. it seems like hes out to get you!!
Don was cool he was always available for those who needed help. The only bad thing is he put u on spot when u had a bad grade on a quiz or test.
Don isn't an easy grader by any means. He is extremely harsh, and in his class, spelling and grammer count (why I don't know) But if you take his class, it will pay off. It will make everything easy He generally tries to help. I would reccommend taking his class if you are willing to work hard. (It pays off. I am glad I took his course!)
He is a awsome professor, I would take him again!!! You learn alot in his class, just be on time and wanting to learn!!
I had him for esp calc1 workshop and hes hard!! but u end up doing soo well and benefit..hes super hard grading journals but then that kinda motivates you to get the perfect score b/ he doesn't give it to u easily... Take him even as your proff if u wanna get the best hold on the concepts!!
Great instructor, very dedicated, will push you very far. Not an easy class so dont expect to just get handed a good grade. you will definetely work for it, but it will benefit you greatly.
a very hyper teacher. He luvs math
Don is awesome! I don't understand why all of his reviews are so bad. He is an amazing teacher and an even better workshop leader. This guy knows his stuff. He can spot what you have done wrong just from a glance at your paper. He makes you work hard and he doesn't appreciate laziness so most of the negative reviews probably come from lazy idiots.
Don is an amazing instructor. He is dedicated to what he does and knows what he is talking about. His willingness to help students is outstanding. Take ESP lecture or workshop with him only if your willing to make an effort to work hard and learn something.
What can i say, he could be one of the best math teacher ive had yet. Very clear on everything he says. All his notes that he puts up on the board are excellent and very helpful when it comes down to tests. RECOMMENDED HIGHLY. dont listen to to other idiots. Very fair and not out to get you and very straight forward. be ready to work
He is extremely straight forward and his notes are EXTREMELY HELPFUL. Has extremely nice hand writing. He is very willing to help you if you don't understand something. I was there almost everyday and he always helped without an attitude. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this professor.
Loved having Don as a teacher. He provides great notes that make the material easy to understand. He was very enthusiastic about the material, which made it easier to focus in class. His quizzes and exams, while not the easiest, were not impossible if you studied the notes and practiced the material.
Don Sherry is great! The class is a heavy load! Don breaks things down for people, he might get his mood swings from time to time but he's great! The quizzes boost your grade and the test aren't that hard if you do the review. He's a very considerate and understanding teacher!
DON IS AMAZING! that being said he WASNT easy!he is nutty and intimidating but you do get used to him. his notes are THE BEST! i seriously mean the best!his quizzes are a slap in the face but his test are much easier than his quizzes.if you have questions GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! he will curve grades based on effort and trends in test scores LUVHIM
This guy is amazing
He grades hard on journals but he's a really cool guy. Just see him during his office hours and you'll pass on journals.
Oh. My. Go. His notes are AMAZING, his style of teaching is AMAZING, and his breadth of knowledge in math itself is AMAZING! I can honestly say that the only reason I flew through Calc 2 was because of "The Donster" ! If I had to describe Don in one word, here it is: SWAG
Best teacher I've ever had. He makes his math fun and explains it in a way that just makes sense. You will learn so much if you take this class.
Personally, I hate math with all of my existence, but the class was good. He gives very very helpful notes in class, and as long as you understand the notes, you'll ace the tests/quizzes. He'll never put trick questions on the tests/quizzes. Everything on the quiz he's been over in class. Also don't be late to class cuz he WILL NOT let you in.
He is an amazing professor! I encourage you to take him especially if you do not have a strong math background. He works to ensure that you have understanding.
Don is such an amazing teacher, he gives homework almost twice a week, and gives quizzes every friday. These help a lot in his class. If you go over the quizzes and the notes taken in class, you will do great on exams! NOTES NOTES NOTES! His notes are very organized and helpful!
OMG absolutely amazing professor! His notes are so clear, his homework is so helpful, and his teaching is amazing!! You have 11 quizzes and 3 tests. He drops the 2 lowest quizzes. Tests and quizzes are given on Fridays. His tests and quizzes are very similar to the homework and notes so study those the most! Recommend him!!
Throughout the course we had quizes, every Friday and we had 4 tests. Don is very nice and very helpful! If you need help go to his office hours, which are always held somewhere in state . his notes are clear and he tells you exactly what's going to be on the quizzestests.
Horrible. Doesn't bother creating a connection with his students. Actually marks off points if showing extra work on exams even though answer is correct- which is confusing af because that shouldnt matter at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE REALLY DOES NOT CARE FOR HIS STUDENTS AT ALL!
Don is definitly enthusiastic about math; he loves his job and gives his 100 percent effort. He isn't for everyone because he doesnt connect with his students very well. I ended up doing very well, because I put alot of effort in. Overall, he is a goofy guy, but very nice and he will want you to succeed
Quizzes and tests are exactly like the example problems, listen to him and take notes while hes showing the examples and you are getting an A. Super funny, loves math, just a good dude in general.
Donald is a terrible professor! He is however very knowledgable with math and passionate but he is not good at teaching it! He marks points off on everything. He is stuck in his ways and you have to do it his way if not he will mark you off 3/4 of a point! He's very condescending! You can't ask for help or he will embarrass you in front of the clas
Be prepared to be fully engaged in your Math course with this teacher! He is very particular on notation and proofs, but that's due to his respect for the field. He's a genius, though, so it was really cool to be able to learn from him.
Don's the best professor I've ever had in the math department here. He can be a little intimidating, but I think that's just because he's kind of awkward. While his tests and quizzes are hard, he's pretty generous with partial credit and they definitely prepare you for the departmental final.
Don's the greatest professor in the math department. He's really strict, but it's only because he cares and wants his students to actually learn. If you're making an honest effort and not just slacking off, he'll try to work with you. Also, Don's a riot.
Really funny always says "guys", but he really cares about you and your grade.
Had him for MAT2010 workshop and he's pretty good. Strict and tough, yes. I have him again for next semester. PROCEED WITH CAUTION. lol
Don is a wonderful man, only if you understand his dry humor. He means well but sometimes he just expects you to know things. I has him for Calc 1 (2010) as a lecture teacher, then as a workshop leader for Calc 2 (2020) he did not not help at all!
Cool guy but doesn't explain things that great
Great Professor, very specific of what will be on exams and quizzes. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Very organized, no surprises on quizzes and exams. Overall awesome experience, he makes sure you know the material.
Don is by far one of my favorite professors at Wayne State. He makes you work hard, but you'll understand math better in the end. If you work hard and do your best, you'll get a good grade. People who complain about Don are lazy and need to learn that a professor won't spoon feed you everything. He's amazing!!
Great teacher, great man.
Don is awesome! Calc 2 is a difficult course and Don is your best chance for success and understanding. The school doesn't just make just any instructor an ESP instructor, he's there for a reason.
Very good lecturer and very organized.
Don is a cool professor. His notes are the best I've seen in my 4+ years of college. He's very energetic: says "guys" a lot and makes sound effects in class. If you have any questions, he's more than willing to talk with you after class in depth. If you get stuff wrong on tests/quizzes, the points taken off add up pretty quick though.
Don is a great professor! His lectures and notes are straightforward and easy to understand. He always writes down where you messed up on quizzes and tests, which helped me fix my mistakes. ESP Calculus 2 is a great class, and although it's challenging, I know that I understand the subject much better because of it.
Donald Sherry. Easily the worst Math ESP teacher out there. He is not meant to teach online class. his lectures are from past semesters showing how lazy he is to teach this class. He really does not care for the class and just follows the schedule. His lectures are horrible and unlike most Math ESP courses, he does not show full work and is unclear
Expecting to receive quite a low grade but that was because I have been slacking. Don is very chill, I currently have 84% but I know I should pass. Loves to say Groovy a lot. I will say online it's hard to stay on par with work, I'm sure I would do great in person. Good ESP teacher def recommend just watch the lectures don't slack and fish like me.
Do not take Don, he is insanely tough, does not care for his students. He will mark you down for the dumbest stuff. I'm sorry I prefer doing Khan Academy's method and not yours :/
Don is a pretty solid teacher. Sometimes he can be irritating with his hour-long video lectures, but for the most part, he is pretty decent. He does not let any mistakes slide so you have to be extra prepared. If you go to his office hours he will help you, but not without making you feel stupid tbh. If you take this class, be ready to study a lot.
He was condescending to me and would laugh out loud at me when I didn't understand concepts. He took off points on tests and quizzes for seemingly no reason other than to be nitpicky and mean. He never answers emails. The lecture vids are excessively long and he fills the silence with singing - I'm not a fan. He is a lot. Do not take his class.
Don is the best Math teacher at Wayne!!!!! I would take him for every math class if I could. He is a great teacher, very clear, amazing at explaining the material. He is a really fair grader so dont expect an easy A, you will definitely have to learn the material and work for your grade, but I have never understood math more than I did with Don.
