Lots of great feedback. Really encouraging.
Marks hard, but you learn a lot.
Din't give a lot of feedback, sort of awkward to talk to sometimes. Decent tutor, but gives a mark that seems quite arbitrary and without definition on how he came to that grade. Responds quickly, available outside of hours (ie email).
Short and abrupt on the phone. Marks are very arbitrary. Doesn't offer advice other than: "My mark is my mark. You need to read more."
This teacher gives vague, subjective marks, is often plain wrong on grammar issues (imagine that for an English teacher), invites you to ask questions then when you do, tells you to find a new tutor when you ask for clarification to his vagueness.
horrible one!
tough marking
Fun as a bowl of old, cold oatmeal. Run from this one!
Whoa. This guy should have kept writing his best seller because he doesn't like teaching.
I took this class by distance and let me tell you that I never understood a word of his feedback in my assignments and plus I never understood how he gave out marks. Hard marker! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
I found him to be very serious but fair. He was not an easy marker but his comments helped to challenge me to do my best.
Hard marker, but fair. Hard to talk to on phone.
I took the distance course so can't comment on Stanely's personality. Correspondence was personable, and he returned assigments quickly. Corrections numbered + explained. Not sure about the hard marking thing. It's an English course. Of course you're going to fail if you can't spell, structure an essay, or form a gramatically correct sentence.
Gets assignments back to students in record time. Always responded to my e-mails. Marked me within a 3% range over 4 assignments and a final exam. Either I'm super consistent or he calls 'em like he sees them.
perhaps the worst instructor i've ever had. Offers almost no comments to help you improve. He also marks arbitrarily, an inexcusable attribute for an instructor. He is also rude, unhelpful and discourteous on the phone.
Bad& Rude Prof, never take with him
This professor is the worst i ever had. for ur own sake, don't take this professor. this professor is strict in spelling, grammar, even punctuation. He deserved to be fired. When I took his Engl 100, he gave me zero to my biggest assignment that I really had worked so hard on it by MYSELF. He is too objective.
he is rather rude and lazy when I talked to him through email. His comments to my assignment is vague. you are not encouraged to take his courses.
Horrible one!! please do not take with him for your own sake
Worst professor in all of BC. If you know whats good for you and you care about your academic career. I suggest you don't take any classes with this man.
WORST TEACHER EVER, DONT EVEN TAKE ANY COURSE WITH HIM!
Very Fair, Always answered my emails promptly. Always gave feedback on my assignments.Answered all my questions with clarity. I thought Dr. Stanley was a great prof.
i recommend other professor if u want at least pass in tru ol course..most terrible instructor i ever had...he teached nothing just comment on student's essay. because of him , i will not take any course from tru .
Dr Stanley was fair and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this course.
Lazy, careless, rude professor who seems to hate his job. He gives vague, dashed-off feedback on every assignment. More than once he simply refused to answer my basic questions. The one good thing I can report is that he's quick with responding to assignments and emails... but it just ain't worth it, folks. Avoid at all costs.
Absolutely HORRIBLE professor.I do not understand how he still has a job with this many bad ratings! He really needs to pay attention to the subject matter of the essays and not only on grammar alone. I will never again take a course online again at Thompson Rivers because of him.
Hard marker. He didn't give much comments on the essays. Prompt response through emails.
The worst professor I ever had. Do not take this course! He didn't help when I ask for help, incredibly hard marker with no suggestion to fix things that I did wrong.
Just awful. Drop whatever course you get with him and re-register. Hopefully you'll get a better tutor.
+ Follow the guidelines and you're fine. No idea where all the 1 ratings are coming from. - Docks you some marks for things that were not in assignment criteria.
From his low rating and the warnings in several comments below, I was very skeptical. However, he wasn't hard or mean at all. His replies were quick and frankstraightforward. His marking was fair and fast. I got an A on everything. He was REALLY nice. He even wished me good luck on the exam! So DON'T WORRY and enjoy the course!
Having taken ENGL1001 with Kanne, I can say that Donald Stanley is by far the better instructor in terms of professionalism and teaching. He is prompt in his emails and provides helpful feedback that enabled me to improve my writing. He marked all assignments promptly. I highly recommend this professor
I don't know why people rated him so poorly. Come on guys, he teaches ENGLISH. Of course you'll do bad on assignments if he grades your grammar, spelling, and OH NO PUNCTUATION?!? Come on. He is fair. I've got A's in all of my assignments and I suck at English. Just do the work and you're good.
Worst teacher I ever had in my whole life! If you want to get anything over a 60% do not take this course.
Hard marker, not suggest
He is the worst instructor I have ever met. He only cares about what he thinks on your essay but not what he can learn from your essay. Only cares about the grammar but not the meaning or your thoughts. I HAVE NO CHOICE OF CHANGING THE INSTRUCTOR EVEN IF I FAIL THE COURSE. TOTALLY WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY to take the course under this instructor
Don was a lovely professor. He was incredibly quick to grade assignments, was happy to answer questions, and gave great feedback. My grade went from B to A and I've noticed a huge improvement in my ability to analyse literature as well as structure essays. I don't know why he's getting back feedback.
I think the essence of writing is the content. Although grammar is important, it is not the end goal of writing. However, Don Stanley only cares about grammar, not the content. In fact, he only likes his own kind of grammar. He will not tolerate passive voice or complex sentence structure.
Mr. Stanley marked my assignments quickly and provided great feedback.
I enjoyed my online class with Don Stanley. He is definitely concerned with grammar on your papers, but I think he graded fairly.
a horrible teacher didn't give clear grading criteria at all, doesn't care about what you have to say but more so what your grammar is like. lol
Don Stanley is great! He marked my work promptly with clear feedback. He definitely pays close attention to grammar but he doesn't fault you too badly if you make a few mistakes, especially if your ideas are original, interesting, and supported with solid references. My writing improved with this course, so I'm happy that I took it.
Dosen't grade the assignment according to the criteria, but according to his random impressions of your essay. Seems confused about syntax about the most normal words, how does that happend when he is a english professor when he cannot make sense of the words. Seems only care about the grammar instead of the content .Completely unprofessional.
Super hard marker, but fast reply er
All over the place with grading. I poured my heart and soul into some papers and would get outrageously low grades, then I stopped caring and just pumped papers out, hardly putting an effort in and I was getting 90s sometimes. Idk. I asked for clarification but he didn't give me anything.
He is the worst tutor. doesnt care about his own marking criteria. comments are too generalized. In 4 assignments commented all: lacking syntax and incorrect usage of direct/indirect articles. Only with these 2 mistakes, I got 50-60 prcnt in each assignment and in final exam too. asking for detailed feedback he said I can challenge him if I want.
don't take this professor if you want to pass with good grades.
probably the worst instructor. never give you the marks you deserve.
DO NOT take this professor if you want to pass!!! He is the worst teacher ever!!!
never take this professor if you want good grades. just for a few mistakes, he gives me 45% in an assignment. he never values your hard work. he tests way too heavy for level 1 English. choose any other instructor you will be good.
I enjoyed Stanleys class immensely. He was kind and responsive and gave great feedback that helped me improve my essay writing skills! I see a ton of people saying he grades with too much emphasis on grammar - hes an English professor! If your grammar sucks, dont complain about your grade; actually make some effort to improve it!
He gave really low marks without clear comments. When I ask any question, he told me to read the comments. One time, I think he even did not read my email, just to me to read the comments. I will suggest do not take any course with this professor, especially when you need the high grade.
Don took over half way through my course and it was like night and day. His feedback was excellent and gave me excellent points to improve my papers, his outline and criteria were way easier to follow than previous prof, he was timely with responses. I took a second English with him and his course work was phenomenal.
I think he is a super fair marker. He provides good feedback and I accidentally sent in my rough draft as my final copy and still got a B with very stupid grammatical errors( like replacing the letter e with a 3 by mistake). He grades assignemts within 2 days and provides good feedback. Good course to take if you need to boost your gpa
He is by far, the worst instructor I have met. First of all, he is a tough grader. Just because you make one or two grammar mistakes, you won't be able to get B or above. If he doesn't like what you are writing about, he will give you C- at best. He pretty much grades papers by his wit only. He also doesn't give helpful feedback.
I cannot say that I like him. He is a tough grader. I told me that my assignments are horrible, but I seriously have no idea about that. I even used the writing institution. He gave me 0 scores. I know that my essays are not worth A but I put a lot of efforts on my essay. he also gave me horrible feedback.
I have already graduated from a top 10 institution and I am taking this class to satisfy a requirement for a Canadian school. I have never received such horrible yet unreasonable grades for my assignments. The comments and edits are the worst. I have met such an unprofessional professor. I guess it is a class you can only expect to pass.
not good at all, i don't know what level of assignment he wants at 1 year of university, remind him that engl 1001 is not masters level couse
Everyone is so negative, so here is what he truly is like: fast to give you replies, he does not give much detail in feedback, his grading system is probably 50% content 50% grammar since he cares significantly about the latter, he likes his stuff straight direct with the assignments. Overall I just find it very tough for ENGL 1001...
I put a lot of effort in essays and he only graded for 68% for only a few words of comments. When I emailed him of how to improve my writing, he just replied "read my comments". I mean, what's useful in your comment to improve my writing??? When I emailed him of what can be included in the final essays and he replied to read the course content.....
Quick turnaround when grading assignments. Feedback is minimal, but willing to discuss if you reach out. Very responsive to emails. Grading is tough but fair - rubric is available to students as part of assignment instructions. Course is well structured with support available through the writing center.
I took ENG1101 before and got very good grades. However, I found this class very hard because I submit my best essay and got grades between 50-68%. This Professor does not provide very constructive feedback. I recommend not to take this class if you need highest grades.
He gives almost no feedback and doesn't give out good grades. I am a decent writer and have gotten A's in other university English courses but in this one, he says my papers are good and then gives me an 85 which doesn't really make sense. His email responses when you ask for more details are lacklustre too. Not enjoyable at all.
Felt he was fair and clear with what was expected. Received grades quickly. Very satisfied with this course and the level of difficulty.
I hear people on this forum stating that the people who complain should just practice their grammar more and improve. While I do agree to an extent, let's be honest, as a professor this guy is useless. He provides little to no feedback on each assignment (literally no feedback for content and very vague grammar comments) and is completely unhelpful
I really like that he gives feedback incredibly fast, within 12 hours, which he reduces my anxiety when I wait for my marks. Not like other profs who take two weeks to a month to mark. However, he gives unconstructive and minimum feedback. Be aware that he is a TOUGH marker if you want to boost your GPA.
Gives quick reply, which is good. Cannot believe this is intro university writings. Very tough grader (even I already graduate from a university before taking this class).
I took two English courses with Prof Stanley and learned a lot. The courses were challenging, as writing and grammar are not my strong suit, my skills improved both from taking the classes. Prof Stanley was very quick at marking papers and gave clear and constructive feedback on both the papers and emailed questions.
CONVOLUTED! CONVOLUTED! CONVOLUTED!
He provides everything you need in a clear, concise lesson plan, and I learned a lot. Complete all the lessons, pay attention to the core aspects and use the grading criteria as a checklist. Also, Grammarly is an incredible app, and I would suggest everyone use it, not just for English. My grades greatly improved because of it!
He is very strict grader, I asked him to recheck my paper but he never responeded back. This was very rude of him and I will never take course with him again.
Would not recommend him at all.
ENGL 1021 was an excellent course - very structured, detailed, and useful. I learned a lot about grammar and Indigenous literature. My writing certainly improved while taking this course. I found Dr. Stanley to be reasonable, but a bit on the difficult end when it comes to marking. I usually am an A+ student, but had to really work hard for A.
Great prof that definitely prepares you for writing in university. Give clear praise and critique.
I had a good experience in ENGL1001 I did all of the practice, read all of the stories but I mostly found Youtubers to be my best resources. He gives very little, but clear feedback. Despite answering quickly, he will respond in very few words. He is critical of your work but I felt the course material prepared me for his comments.
He is very good professor. Returns assignment 3 times to correct and didn't deduct any marks. Quick reply to emails and questions. Give assignment marks in 12 hours.
He was a tough grader, made me work for my grade, and his comments were useless. However, he was consistent in his grading and marked very fast. The course itself sets you up for success and there were no surprises in the exam. Know your MLA and read the commentary. English is not a strong subject of mine and I did fairly well! You got this!
The worst course I ever took, he wants to train you to be a writer, it is too hard for level 1 English, and tough grader, no help and support, if English is your second language, don't even think about, drop the course, if this is your mandatory course, take it somewhere else, you won't regret it!
The only positive thing I can say about this particular professor is that the marking turn around time is quick. That is all. Avoid at all cost.
took 3 online courses with prof stanley - ENGL1021,1031,1101 (they were mandatory courses - he just happened to be the prof for all of them). found his course format easy to navigate - could jump back in fairly easily after a break - notes and assignments set you up for exams. found his quick marking a major motivator (consistently less than 24hrs)
Don is a super tough grader even though the course is easy and interesting. He does not provide appropriate feedback. We never know what he is expecting of us but still will not think once before grading. Will ruin your grade for no reason. Unhelpful in most cases. He expects professional writing for an intro course.
He is a tough grader as everyone else seems to mention here. Feedback is generally short and sometimes confusing with the layout. The final exam is quite difficult as you need to have a bunch of the stories memorized or you will have no chance of passing. Overall OK but would not recommend courses with him if you need a high GPA.
Very tough grader, doesn't give a lot of feedback. Expects a lot from an introductory English course.
I honestly should have taken an English course from Douglas .
Very tough grader, i wish i would have taken course from another college.
Very tough grader, i wish i would have taken my course from different college.
WORST PROF EVER!!!! So terrible, gives no feedback or advice, marks ridiculously hard, has no examples of what he wants. All his comments are invalid. Overly negative feedback without any suggestions for improvement. Strongly dislike this class, wish I took a different one.
Don Stanley was by far the worst Professor I have had in all 4 years of university. I highly recommend taking this course with another teacher as Don Stanley makes everything 1000x more difficult than it needs to be. He gives terrible feedback and is not willing to help even when asked.
I instantly regretted taking this course. Avoid at any cause!
Don Stanley should absolutely not be marking a 100 level course. He clearly does not care about the students taking this course. I asked 3 times for constructive feedback because his grades for the assignments did not match the feedback. An even more frustrating point, he marked an Indigenous literature course, and he is not Indigenous.
Do not take this course if you struggle with writing and english. Don is a difficult, hard marker who provides nothing but negative feedback. The instructors at TRU are lazy, they don't upload any lectures and expect you to teach yourself everything. The exam is worth 40%, all of your hard work means nothing in the end.
He is fair. If you know proper grammar and paragraph structure. Make sure to read all the details in the assignments as it does state what is expected in the assignments to get full marks. I found Don gives good feedback on every paper and is very clear about why you got the grade you got. Overall it was a good course. Lots of reading!
If you are thinking of taking ENGL 1001 with Don, think again. Don's feedback is horrible, not constructive, and contradicting. His feedback on assignments will not help you in the slightest. Oh, did I mention he is one of the toughest markers I ever experienced. Even if you email him asking for clarification, he will give you absolutely nothing.
If English is your second language don't do this. There are no rubics and grading is purely subjective. Don is a heavy grader and feedback is useless. I cannot believe that this is intro class. I was so stressed out the whole time. Ridiculous.
Tougher grader. When submitting the assignment, he does not give effective feedback, and you don't know his criteria for grading. It seems that he grades randomly, not professionally, and he is unfriendly to those students who learns English as second language. I totally lose interest and confidence in this course, feel high stress in this course.
He is a good professor, marks quickly. Will be difficult if you're not an English major. Tough grader but fair and helps you improve. Overall enjoyed the course content.
No feedback, no marking consistency, and he doesn't respond to emails. Every small error is worth 10-20% off the grade-made one error, and the only feedback was "excellent work," and got a 70%. He marks as if he is an editor, not a professor, and from what I have seen, you can easily fail your exams based on using a phrase that "he wouldn't use."
No proper feedback, no marking consistency. Every small error is worth 10-20% off the grade-made one error, and the only feedback was " good luck for next assignment," and got a 5%. He marks as if he is an editor, not a professor, and from what I have seen, you can easily fail your exams based on using a phrase that "he wouldn't use."
Expects students to be writing at professional level - good luck if you're ESL. Inconsistent feedback.
I had to take ENGL 1001 as a pre-req for my teaching degree and can honestly say it was the worst class I have ever taken. Don Stanley marks very hard considering it is a first year course and provides little to no feedback. When adjusting to his little feedback you still receive the same mark or lower. The final is worth 40% so Goodluck.
Very tough grader, but overall had a great experience in this class. He got back to me quickly and helped me out when I needed it. Managed to pull a B in the class, but it was not easy!
I am not sure why so much negativity. Yes this course involves lots of reading and you need to be able to write a solid commentary to show you did the readings. He is a super fast marker and provides feedback on what you need to do to improve. Definitely not a prof that will pamper you but my writing skills definitely improved taking this course.
Tough grader, with little helpful feedback. But if you stay on top of the work and use tools like Unstuck ai, you can do well. Definitely not an easy A, but if you put in the effort, it's manageable.
Unclear expectations, shameless subjectivity, makes constant mistakes in assessments, and when corrected suggests that those incorrect assessments "did not influence the marking". Unwilling to admit objective mistakes.
You do have to read 6 books, but if you keep to 25/30 pages a day its manageable. He answers emails pretty quick so that was nice. Gave good feedback on assignments. If you put in the work (was about 2-3 hours per week for the assignments once all the reading is done) you'll be fine.
His online class structure doesn't seem too bad at the beginning: 4 ASSIGNMENTS, and 1 FINAL exam. He writes a few useless sentences as feedback, and says everything you write is convoluted yet basic at the same time! DO NOT let him be your professor unless you wanna fail. He replies to emails sort of quick. He expects a Shakespeare-esque essay lol
Honestly a lot of these reviews, especially the older ones are probably written by intl. students expecting a diploma mill education. No he does not give out A's to everyone but if you actually study the materials, put effort in and actively try to improve your writing he will mark fairly, like every english teacher. Don't worry you won't fail.
