very nice and helpful. sometimes he seems like he doesn't know everything we're covering. very understanding when it comes to grading and tests. also goes through his powerpoints kinda fast so its hard to take notes, but he posts everything online.
He taught the first half of this course. He did relatively well in clarifying when people ask questions. His exams are fair and you can always know what to expect.
Don is a very nice guy and tries to be as helpful as possible but he is also really awkward and has a hard time communicating when he's in front of the class. His PowerPoints are helpful and if you ask him a question, he'll give you lots of hints. He doesn't seem to understand all the information he's teaching but he's better than other teachrs.
His tests are multiple multiple choice and suck
Professor Stratton is a great guy. He isn't a horrible teacher either, just very unsure of himself in genetics. He admits himself he took in many years ago and there have since been many advancements in the field he is unsure about. He constantly look to Tierney to see if he is correct. But at least he tries to be a good teacher, unlike Tierney.
Very unclear, doesn't ever really know what he is talking about, adds to the useless bio department
Stratton seems like a very nice guy but was extremly hard to learn from. He is trying to be helpful in answering questions but a lot of times didnt know the answers. Also, when asked if we needed to know something for a test he would often say we needed to be familiar with the overal concepts then test us on the specifics.
He's a really nice guy who wants his students to do well but he just seems to rush through all of his lectures and excepts to understand everything that he is teaching. If you love biology I'd suggest you obtain a different professor. You will hate this class and end up hating biology.
Very nice guy. Tests are very easy and is a very fair grader. Lab is a joke and just showing up guarantees you an A. Perfect class if just filling a lab science requirement.
i like his teaching style very much, is clear and enjoys using video animations often. he solely uses powerpoint slides which can make his lectures redundant but nonetheless was a good bio prof. sometimes he doesnt know answers to student questions.
Stratton was, by far, my favorite teacher of the semester, and one of the best I've ever had. While his teaching style may not be for everyone, I found it extremely helpful to me. He lectures at a quick pace that kept my attention throughout, and he shows a huge amount of enthusiasm in what he teaches. I would recommend him for anyone taking bio.
I love this guy. I hate biology and the only reason that I went to class is because I loved watching him get excited about plants. I recommend this class for people who don't like bio but need a lab requirement.
The Donster is by far THE BEST bio professor on campus! He's a wicked cool guy, inside and outside the classroom and is always willing to help you out. He's difficult, but it's BCORE, so no matter what it's gonna be hard. He's very fair though and very excited about his subject. Highly recommended!
Some people love Dr. Stratton, but I find his teaching style incredibly difficult to understand. His powerpoint slides are hard to follow and clicker questions are ridiculously hard. Reading the book is the only thing that helps me do okay on exams.
Worst Biology teacher of ALL time. He is boring in class and uses huge words that no one understands. He does not make anything clear. His tests are ridiculously harder than they should be. Grading is unfair and doesn't curve even though a lot of people fail.
I learned so much about biology this past semester. During lecture he goes at a quick pace but gives you all the important details needed to pass the upcoming exam. I have no complaints about his teaching style, he breaks complex concepts down and is willing to help you if you don't understand something. His exams were fair but tricky.
He sucks at teaching. His lecture is boring and it seems that whenever someone asks a question he doesn't know the answer to it. Avoid him if you're going to take this class. We used his notes for his book for the class and I bought Gotelli's book and understood more from that. Just take it with Gotelli
love this man. hes interesting and passionate about his teaching. makes going to class worth it
He was a great teacher! So passionate about everything and was very willing to help outside of class and answer any questions in class. He was very interesting and made the class go by fast! His tests were said to be the most difficult of the professors teaching the class but they were really not that bad at all.
He was a nice guy, and he didn't just read off powerpoint slides, which is a big plus. Took the time to make sure everyone was without questions, explained concepts pretty clearly. However, tests were very hard and lecture didn't adequately go into detail enough for the exams.
I found him extremely boring, and he did a horrible job at explaining things. He was clearly teaching 11 and 12 as a requirement and not because he wanted to. Avoid him, especially as a freshman if you're not used to a lecture setting
Dr. Stratton is a very nice man who is very excited about Biology and makes me want to learn
So pretty much Dr. Stratton does a good job explaining and going over his slides. He answers any questions. But his exams are extremely hard. When going over his slides he will say you don't need to know all the details, well honestly you do. So my advice read the chapters in the book, outline them and know the details.
He's a very good teacher. He really knows the material and is very good about making technical concepts clear. He uses the clicker questions to make sure everyone is on the same page and it really helps. I recommend him highly. His tests are not too hard if you study. It's all the material he covers or tells you to know.
So this guy is ok. He loves the subject and makes fun of himself all the time. He admits when he doesn't know our questions but he tries his best when answering them. Taking his notes are very important but make sure to memorize the diagrams and experiments in the book. The exams are specific but if you study it should not be to difficult.
Great teacher but difficult... I recommend this professor
AMAZING TEACHER!
Great professor, very informative and helpful.
Stratton was a fantastic professor. Very clear and fun to listen to. He wants all of his students to succeed. Read the text, then go to lecture. He makes the textbook come to life.
This class was horrible. Stratton was not an interesting professor, and his tests were really difficult.
Dr. Stratton is a wonderful professor, and just an all around great guy. Don't let his BCOR 11/12 classes (which are hard as hell) give you the wrong idea about anything else he teaches. Dr. Stratton is extremely clear and very helpful. Take any class of his if you get the chance, he will make biology more interesting than it already is.
very engaging science professor. Keeps your attention and makes the most boring things remotely interesting. Good use of the book, but he doesn't rely on it which is nice.
Stratton was awesome! He cares about you understanding the material and appreciates questions. I definitely recommend him!
My favorite lecturer this semester. Tests you on concepts more than facts and will tell you if he wants you to memorize details. Lectures were always interesting!
I hated learning about plants and phylogeny but Dr Stratton's lectures were interesting (despite being on a subject I loathed) and engaging. Tests were tough but fair.
Stratton is one of the best professors I've had at UVM. He explains everything so well in lecture he makes it seem easy. If you keep up on the textbook readings and attend class, you will pass and do well in the course.
This teacher is awesome. He seemed to know what students would have trouble with during lectures. He was very enthusiastic about the material and made learning it fun. Very nice and friendly person. His exams and grading policies were fair. I tried to get him again this semester but there was another scheduling conflict.
His notes are terrible so be prepared for reliance on the textbook and the Leaning Curve question homework. Learn what your homework asks you for instead of just looking up the answers online.
i almost failed this class and cried when meeting with him during office hours. he asked me if i needed a tissue
He is really good at what he does. I really enjoy his lectures. His exams can be hard, but if you read your textbook and show up at the lecture you will do well.
Great lecturer, you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches and its extremely knowledgeable about topics. Taking his class next semester.
Dr. Stratton is a really great teacher. He is a little boring in lecture but that is probably because the content is boring. He loves clicker questions so be sure to attend. He is helpful in office hours. I would definitely take BCOR with him if you get the chance.
He's incredibly passionate about biology. Consequently, his lectures were engaging and thought provoking. He did an excellent job of preparing us for exams. Honestly he's one of my favorite professors at UVM. #doitfordon
Donald was amazing, one of the best teachers I've ever had. I'm taking another one of his classes this semester because he was such an incredible teacher.
Don is an amazing lecturer! He is very clear and engaging, making the subject matter very interesting. If you are willing to put in the work, a good grade is very achievable, but don't expect him to hand it to you.
10/10 great prof. I loved this class with Don! He cares about whether or not you learn and isn't afraid to admit that he doesn't know the answer to something. He actually takes suggestions to heart, so make them if you want. A little difficult to find assignments, use calendar in Launchpad, don't buy the book.
Good lecturer and nice person. He is generally clear as to what he expects from you and the tests are multiple choice. Lectures are understandable.
If you have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT. He's funny, approachable, and really cares about his students succeeding. If you don't get the material, go to his office and he'll help you. Could not recommend him highly enough!
Don is my favorite professor at UVM i cannot recommend him enough. I have now taken two classes with him, in my first year alone, and both have been knockouts. he knows what he's talking about and makes the material funny, interesting and accessible. I would take his smaller classes, I hear his larger lectures aren't as amazing as my experience.
His lectures were story heavy and he hardly had any words on the slides. Hard to stay engaged at 8:30 in the morning. If you pay attention & read the textbook you'll be ok. He is passionate and very knowledgable. Don't panic if you have to be in the sophomore section, you'll live. He is a good professor! Have coffee before class stay awake!
Stratton is a great professor who clearly loves his job. The course is material heavy, and it is very hard to do well in this class without reading the textbook. He is a fluent lecturer, but his slides have hardly any notes/information. So, if you're a big note taker I suggest paying attention in lecture and annotating notes in the text chapters.
Lots of online reading based homework. He offers extra credit following each exam which is a great grade booster. Uses iClickers for attendance (when they work). Tests are entirely multiple choice but can still be tough, you have to study if you want to pass. Lectures are dry but can be fun, the beginning of the class has the better topics.
Don Stratton is hands down the best biology professor I have ever had. He actually makes you care about the subject. Although the 830s are really hard to wake up for, it is completely worth it to have this professor. UVM is so extremely lucky to have him.
Stratton was great. He clearly was very passionate about biology, which led to genuinely interesting lectures. His exams were usually all multiple choice with a few short answer questions, and as long as you take good notes during his lectures and do the homework assignments, they should be fairly easy. Highly recommend!
Stratton is truly legendary. This man can pretty much do the splits while he stands (take the class and you'll see). His lectures are super fun and he is a sweet man. He only tells you what you need to know and includes some fun videos. Biology became fun in this class. Not once have I felt tired in his 8:30 AM lecture. We were prepared for exams.
Donny Stratton is a really fun professor and is often unintentionally funny. Getting up at 8:30 for this lecture is pretty hard, but he doesn't make the class itself any harder than it has to be. The 3 exams are multiple choice and the lowest is only counted at 50%. Ngl, if you took AP bio, you might be kinda bored. Donald tries hard though.
Don Stratton is a real icon. He's an amazing professor and is very passionate about the subject matter. His tests aren't bad as long as you do the readings and attend lecture.
Best professor! Very fair, hard work pays off. He is a passionate and fun lecturer. Also he rocks one earring.
Don is literally the best professor I have ever had. I have never met someone who genuinely wants their students to do so well. Got an A in BCOR 11 and currently taking BCOR 012 with him. He even wrote me a letter of rec and is now my academic advisor. He is funny, unique, inspiring and has such dad qualities. Take Don!!!!!!!!!!
Don is very sweet and has lots of Dad qualities. Lectures are engaging especially when he does he animal dances or songs. There are 3 exams + the final which are only multiple choice, so if you are a bad test taker you really will have to study. I used the textbook but not super necessary. You need access code for Mastering Bio however.
Big dad energy from Don. He's funny, but I think most of the time it's on accident. But he doesn't mess around. He uses every single minute he has to teach you something. Don really knows his stuff. Take Don.
I love Don, seriously the best professor I've had at UVM.
I took Don at first for BCOR 011, and I enjoyed his class so much that I decided to take him again for BCOR 012. His lecture slides are easy to follow and he's really good at telling you what you need to know. I would recommend him to anyone who needs to take these classes. There are 3 mid-semester exam that are all multiple choice.
Prof Stratton is OK. I took BCOR over the summer with him and he definitely tried to cram as much material as a regular semester into the class. His tests were a little ridiculous for the level of the class and his lectures tended to be disorganized.
at UVM no BCOR 012 class is going to be easy, to get a good grade you will have to do more than just listen in lecture. With that being said I thought his lectures were very helpful but in my opinion, it is not possible to get better than a B without a lot of time studying on your own and reading the book. Also a good guy and kept me entertained.
Did BCOR 011 and 012 with Prof. Stratton. He's is a good guy who structures the classes in a way that make it eminently possible to succeed. His lectures are good, but you should really focus your efforts on the textbook. If you put in the time, read carefully, and take good notes, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Don is the best! BCOR 011 might not be the most interesting topic, and being in a giant lecture hall can make things a bit harder, but he does an amazing job with it. The lectures are engaging, he's a funny guy, and he always takes time to answer questions when they come up. He was also very flexible and understanding with COVID related things!
Don is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are very intriguing and he has always been so kind and helpful in class. His tests are more applicable rather than strict memorization, which (personally) I prefer. Definitely always try to get him!
Stratton is so enthusiastic & passionate about what he teaches, it makes him an incredible professor. He asks questions to challenge our learning & make sure we're on track & understanding the content. I feel like he genuinely cares & wants to see his students succeed! Would highly recommend.
Don loves bio and seems to love teaching. He cares about students-answers emails promptly and is happy to meet outside of class. Labs are pretty interesting. Little assignments like discussion board and pre lecture questions but it all adds up so definitely participate. Exams can be tricky, definitely need to study and reading the books helps.
Don is super passionate about what he teaches, genuinely wants students to succeed and is great at explaining material. Yesterday, he led the whole lecture hall in a goofy song about a subgroup of a phylla. I feel like if a grown man can get a lecture hall of hundreds of kids to sing, that really tells you all you need to know about how liked he is
Really nice guy. Don clearly enjoys the subject matter and tries to make it interesting.
Don Stratton is the best prof i've had at uvm. You can tell that he loves what he teaches and it rubs off onto his students. His lectures were easy to follow and he really makes class interesting. I had him for bcor 011 and then made my schedule in the spring around having his class for bcor 012! AMAZING, seriously.
I love don! Lectures were engaging. Tests focused on material covered in class. If he repeats something a couple times in lecture, there's a good chance it will be on the test. If you keep up with material you can easily do well. Definitely go to class, and read the textbook as needed. Do the homework because it's good review.
Professor Stratton was great and very sweet. It's always the best to have a teacher who enjoys the material they're teaching. You'll definitely want to use the textbook and practice tests on Mastering Biology for studying. He provides so many ways to get points besides the exams which is a great opportunity to boost your grade.
It is great when a professor likes the subject they teach and Don definitely enjoys teaching, listen to what he says in class as not all the material in the book is talked about or is on tests. For 2022 fall at least, his lecture tests were fully multi choice exams which were great and never too hard.
Stratton was the perfect prof for an intro class. He was great about when we had questions and was super understanding and helpful when I was having medical issues. Definitely recommend.
Professor Stratton is great! He is very accessible outside of class and is a very good teacher. His lectures are a bit boring but are easy to understand. His tests are multiple choice and are not super challenging.
Don is a fantastic lecturer, very interesting, engaging, and funny.
Stratton is such a cutie, very clearly cares a lot about his students and how they do in class, and is pretty clear. Tests are pretty easy but there's a lot of reading. Lectures can be a bit boring but very informational and he tries really hard to clarify what people are stressed about. Overall definitely loved him and the class was totally fine
I did not take my introductory biology classes at UVM, so I am guessing I have missed a few things. Don, however, does not take that into account. He assumes that you have come fresh out of his intro bio course and remember everything clearly. He does not review for quizzes and does not go over homework unless more than one person asks.
Lectures are easy to follow and take notes on. Obvious that he knows what he's talking about. Tests are all multiple choice and very straight forward, with partial credit points available for post exam reflection. Lots of work but it's all useful for learning. Overall great teacher
Don is a very passionate, funny, and knowable professor. He is especially knowledgeable about plant biology if that's your thing! BCOR 21 is the accelerated option, and it will definitely feel like it but I think Don does a great job. From my knowledge, he is one of the most popular and well respected Biology professors on campus.
Actually loved this professor, he was very enthusiastic and if you enjoy bio you will enjoy him!
prof stratton is so sweet and clearly loves the subject matter! interesting lectures, but heavy reliance on them for tests (his slides also don't contain text). his tests were initially very challenging (id always hear people complain about the difficulty), but i eventually adapted to the format and figured out the best approach! :)
I really loved having Don as a professor! He's extremely knowledgeable about the subject, and he's very good at explaining complex topics. His lectures are interesting and engaging, and he's always willing to help (gives extra credit, tells us what we need to know and what we don't, etc.). Tests are really easy if you study!
stratton is sweet, not a bad professor, but these reviews must be fake. everyone would complain about his tests (not awful but nowhere near as easy as some reviews make them sound, other sections would talk about how hard his tests were compared to theirs). tests are lecture heavy, no texts on slides so if you can't hear/miss a class then good luck
I took accelerated biology (now called BCOR1425) and Don did a really good job of managing & teaching the course. It was clear from the beginning what the course would be like, and although I was feeling burnt out at the end that was more so that pace and the work load of the course, which there is no way around. He's caring and very knowledgeable.
I had Don for several classes and he was amazing! He is very kind, funny, and clearly cares about his students and the subject matter. He is a little disorganized sometimes, but all and all gets the content across effectively. He loves to answer questions, provides study guides, and does a review session before exams. Also his exams are very fair.
