best prof ever
Best prof I've had so far!
TRIM ROCKS
He is God.
Had him at SHAD VALLEY 88M - absolutely rocked! Can't see teeth when smiling.
challenging, but fair, keeps class interesting, best math teacher around
Amazing!
TRIM IS GOD!! BEST ever, lots of energy made class fun!
Huuuuuuge prof. Best I've ever had.
hilarious, commonly refers to numbers as guys
Trim=Math, they're synonymous. He Rocks!
Very good prof, his tie always matches the shirt, no teeth, but who cares
Trim Rules. Best math class I've ever been in. I wish he could teach all clases
trim is the best - i can't believe he remembers everyone's last names!
others have obviously not taken complex analysis with this prof..Trim + 343 = F

Great guy, fun class, defiantly take anything he is teaching
amazing teacher, wish he taught second term!
da boo Trim
Best teacher i've ever come across. Extremely intelligent, clear explanations.

Trim Trim he's our man...if he can't teach ya YOUR A FLIPPIN MORON. Greatest teacher...if you dont learn it from him give up.
best prof ever, he rememers students' last names, I got an A in that class
Insanely difficult. But you will love him anyways. Anyone who can get excited over differential equations should be commended! Totally recommended
disappointing

Dr. Trim is my hero!!! If I grow up to be half the man that Trim is, I will have succeeded in life!
I took Calc 2 with him a few years ago and fell in love with calculus. He is the best prof I have ever had. If you get the chance to learn from him, do it.
Has to be the the BEST math professor in North America. Holds your attention all class, and you acctually learn something useful. Not to mention he has all sorts of awards for his teaching, so it not just students who think he is great.
One of the greatest prof's you can get. Great person. Consider yourself lucky if he is your math prof.
Had him many years ago. Now I'm a Prof myself, and I consider him to be a role model.
Frikin hard course, but he's the only guy who could keep you awake. BTW, he has photographic memory, so don't mess with him. He's the god of math.
Great prof and person. Since he wrote the book, don't take any notes, just listen and go over the book later. Hard courses, but because of him we can understand the stuff. A+
What can i say? He's very hyper/energetic.... wrote an awesome book, he's quite clear on what he teaches.. got nothing but respect for this guy, going to waterloo and completing almost all the math courses there.... also good idea with the bonus quest
By far the best prof in the math department. He made a hard course alot easier to understand, and always made students feel welcome in seeking help outside class. Too bad he only teaches in the fall term.
Best teacher I ever had, inspiring, encouraging, entertaining, makes math fun to learn - not easy though, he's very demanding and challenging on tests, and has high standards - but tries to prepare you.
Dr. Trim is one of the best teachers ive ever had.
He told me that if you don't like the book, write your own. When I became a college instructor, I didn't like the book. so...now my 2nd printing. thanks Don.
The best prof that I ever had. Clear explanation and will make the course easy to understand and can catch the attention of the class. He has a very good memory as he can remember ur name.
Trim is ridiculous. Calls people out, Defies us to figure out things, throws chalk. Hes like the general from Full Metal Jacket. Except that you learn soo much from the man. He is truly a math god.
Awesome Prof! Makes things very interesting, and easy to follow. His textbook is great. If you have any problems with anything in the course (or other courses for that matter) the book will have an easy to understand explanation with examples. Very enthusiastic.
he is a good guy. can be slightly anal at times. lets me drink beer during exams .....
Best Prof EVER! Seems intimidating at first but really isn't... Very animated/lively, I have seen people sit in on his class just because of his entertainment value! Don't be afraid to speak up in his class, it will help you a lot to understand! P.S. The 'chocolate math' is an easy 5 marks! YAY!
I love this class just because his teaching makes it so much fun. When he gets really excited about a paticular subject that he's teaching he sorta sounds like Screech off of Saved by the Bell. It's really quite hilarious. But, it keeps you interested in the material that he's teaching.
He's like Yoda on crack. He makes math exciting, but also makes hard tests. You'll never fall asleep in his classes.
The proff was not too bad, but if you did anything a different way than he did he didn't like it at all. Very stuborn proff.
GREAT PROF!!!!!!!
Really great prof who got into his lessons
The "Robin Williams of Mathematics"
Been over ten years since I've taken his class. Dr Trim is the reason I make over $100k. By far the best class I've taken at UofM.
this man is hilarious! i HATE math but i have never laughed so hard in my life. he loves his job you can tell. will never make you fall asleep thats forsure. his tests are hard tho!
heh, this guy can teach calc like a mutha. too bad this is his last semester teaching, i don't know how i'll pass math 2 or 3!
Trim is the Math God. I only got one course with him, and I wish I'd had more. He knows how to teach, and keep things interesting.
an amazing prof all around... he makes calculus fun
He makes math seem easy when he teaches. More professors should sit in one of his classes and see what he does. The bonus of his class is that you can understand what he says and you don't need a translator.
He's the best math prof i've ever had. He make the subject easy to undrestand. He's funny and keeps the class focused on the lecture.
Great prof. he makes classes interesting since he doesn't have a mono toned voice and you can tell that he is passionate about the work that he does.
Best prof i've every had. He makes the lectures funny and entertaining with his off the wall comments and teaching style. Nice guy to talk to. Really knows what he's talking about
Awesome prof....never had anyone better. His teaching style makes you learn. All his antics overshadow the material, which keeps the lectures interesting. Too bad he's retiring soon. We're losing one of the best profs at U of M.
Dr. Trim is undoubtably the best professor or teacher I have ever had. He is energetic, dynamic, hilarious, and he makes learning fun! Unfortunately, his exams are tough! Overall, if you have the option of having him for a class, sign up in his class! You won't regret it!!!
I am awful at math, and due to this and only being able to get a seat at the very back of the room, I had to drop his course. However, he was very dynamic and humorous--but sometimes he spoke too quietly, so I could not hear him from my poor seat. (The other students did not help, either.) Still, despite my problems, he was very good at his job.
I love the way this guy teaches. First day of classes and he knew my name. I am not good in math, ifit wasn't for him, I would have dropped out of engineering. He is one of the best profs I have ever had.
The first day, in Engineering Orientation, I was told by a 4th year to take the courses taught by Trim because he is an awesome prof. I took his advice and was not let down. He is easily in the top 3 profs I have ever had. Trim rules!
I HATE math. It's always been my worst subject, but Trim made it easy and I ended up with an A. He learned student's names and seemed to really care about individual students. If you're an arts student and need a math course take this one with Trim, totally easy and totally worth it!
Trim definitely inspired me to work hard at his course, something I don't necessarily do
He's the most humourous prof I've ever had!
Easily the best professor I've ever had! This is one class you look forward to going to.
The Godfather of profs.
A very interesting prof. He can make the class very fun
This man hates students. I really couldn't say enough bad things about him. If anyone has ever had the HORRIBLE DISPLEASURE of having to use his text they know what I mean. I've never in my life encountered a text so confusing, so useless, so full of errors and worthless drivel as his. I sincerely wish this man ill will.
Trim is excellent, he is one of the most entertaining and encouraging profs I have ever had, and I owe him the most special thanks for all that his teachings have done for me

Math profs come in 2 varieties: Foreign and eccentric. Trim falls in the latter category. Says the strangest things in class. Funny stuff. He also is good for highlighting common mistakes people make while teaching so you don't fall into old traps. It saddens me that I'm an Arts student and will never take another one of his classes... :(
He wrote the best book, and is the best teacher.
Can you get a better prof then Trim?!?! I dont think so. This man is BRILLIANT! Actually beyond billiant! wow...
He remembered my name after speaking with me once. So fun, eccentric, smart, and clear. I didn't even like math, but by the end, I had to re-evaluate my once very distinct displeasure with the subject.
If you have the chance to take a math course with him, DO NOT HESITATE.
Makes math interesting and he's extremely energetic when preaching..., I mean teaching. He made math easier to understand and makes the lectures very enjoyable.
The best ever
The only downside to coming to this class is that the math can be a little tricky. But that's OK, because there's Trim to show you every little quirk and rule you need to know. This guy makes math fun and understandable. Plus he's just such a cool guy. Funny, enthusiastic, smart, completely approachable, and energetic. This guy's got it all.
Best teather on math I have ever meet.
He knows calculus very well.
Hes good, but overrated. Still easily one of the better math proffs. What I didn't like was that he kept adding units. But he really knows his stuff.
Definitely overrated on here and in general but in a sea of garbage that is UofM profs he is much better than most. You're lucky to get a prof that can speak english, let alone one that can teach difficult concepts. Trim's class is far from boring and he's always willing to help outside of class with a very friendly attitude.
This man is not overrated. He is the best professor I've had, studying 3 years at the U of M. He has an extraordinary passion for mathematics and tries to drive this passion into students. He teaches math the way it should be taught. End of story. Thank you Dr. Trim.
Best math teacher I ever.
The best math teacher here .Knows his subject inside out.Lectures are extremely good, interesting and precise. Gets to the root cause of problem. Extremely helpful would take every effort to make you understand a question.Very enthusiastic about teaching math.Very Highly recommended.P.S: take his class for sure if you are in engineering!
Wonderful professor! Very clear and concise, and makes the topics simple to understand. If you need to fulfill your math credit, this is definitely the guy to take it from. Very helpful and understanding. His explanations are incredibly clear, and he enjoys what he does so class is always entertaining!
best math teacher ever.
The best math teacher I have ever had. His good sense of humor makes the class flow through easily and his explanations are crystal clear
I feel sorry for the upcoming high school students who won't have the chance to have Trim as a professor. He is out of this world.
Great prof, only one I've ever had that was able to keep me awake in 8:30 classes, really helpful. He is however a pretty ruthless marker.
My learning style and his teaching style were NOT compatible. Most students love him as a prof, I hated him. Skipping the occasional class didn't help but I couldn't stand the sound of his voice (this-a-one and that-a-one) and his textbook might as well have been in a foreign language cause I didn't understand it. Not a fan.
Best. Math. Prof. Ever. He explained everything step by step, involved the class a lot with problem solving, great humour. I have no regrets choosing him as my math prof. I failed this course with a different prof but Trim made everything crystal clear.
I had Dr. Trim for Math 1, 2 and 3 and it was a pleasure going to his classes, even at 8:30 in the morning. His unique ability to explain math concepts in a way that you remember has earned him multiple teaching awards. Trim is a legend amoung the engineers, professionals who had him 30 years ago still know him for his teaching quailty. 10/10 :)
Take his class you wont regret it. Teaches with LOTS of enthusiasm. Will help you when ever you need it (despite the class having TAs). Is very clear, the class is tougher than it needs to be but his teaching skills make it well worth it.
Best prof I've ever had. Knows absolutely everything about engineering math, and how to best make people understand it. doesn't just show you how to do problems like a lot of math profs, but teaches you the process of doing it. Genuinely cares about teaching well.
Amazing prof. The only reason I passed linear algebra.
see him all the time before my stats class, makes my day, so sexy, love the shirts he wears! would take a class with him any time just to look at him! oh baby
Awesome! probably the best prof i had in my life, teaches with enthusiasm and excitement and knows just the way to make anyone understand math or linear algebra!
Awesome professor,Just by going to class,I could remember formulas.
DON'T get anyone else but Trim if you can. His lectures are really good and he wrote the textbook. All the math profs split marking exams and Trim looks for specific things only his class knows about. Even if not registered for his section, attend it instead.
old-school type of teacher, yells alot, wants to ensure you know everything so tends to deliberately employ tricky questions on exams. even switched the usual m/c final to a long-answer final which i found harsh considering it was a condensed summer course and only two days to prepare. also only mentioned 4 questions on final, but gave 11 instead.
Tried to make class funny and was not direct to the point in lectures. Retook the course with a different prof and got an A. Wouldn't recommend.
Trim is to math what Wayne Gretzky was to hockey!
Very strict marker, but he is an amazing teacher. He genuinely cares for his students.
Calculus was my least favorite subject until i took math 1 with trim. What makes Trim the best math prof is that he loves what he's doing and is energetic. He may be a thousand years old but he has more energy then me at 20. His explanations are crystal clear and his math humor is actually funny. If you have to take a math class take it with trim.
Professor Trim is why mathematics is still a thing, His love for the subject is hard to overlook and his enthusiasm helped me overcome the difficulties of mathematics and maintained my interest in the field all the while, 10/10 in all aspects besides his exam difficulties, very fair with his questions yet he also tends to get creative
Very funny, super intense about math. I found his spastic style was not my thing, I prefer a more structured and dry approach. I found he went too fast for me. Don't sit any further back than the middle or he won't see your raised hand.
he is the best math prof ever!!! U won't find even quite similar to him
Took math with him, doesn't give much examples, too much theory and explanations which makes it look complicated for me, and no midterm review unlike other profs. The textbook sample questions are not that helpful for the exam anyway. But at least he's very energetic and interested in teaching
His energy made paying attention in class easy, and could probably power a small city. You can tell he is passionate about teaching calculus, I mean, he probably invented it. Very willing to help after hours. Exams are challenging, but consistent. If you pay attention in class you'll know what to expect. Pretty spry, if you consider he's like 700
He was not a good teacher in my opinion. He tries to imply that math is the most important course in engineering, and treats his students like people from faculty of math. As a result, the exam is of course a lot harder compared to other profs. His lecture contains too much theory, very few examples, only sample tests can help you pass his courses.
Donald Trim was the best, most memorable and helpful prof I ever had.
If you wanna do engineering, go for Trims class. Otherwise, just quit.
I finished his course without understanding anything. Assigned questions that he gave does not reflect things on the test. Examples in class are also irrelevant.
Awesome math prof.
Trim is an enthusiastic professor. He loves math and will get excited about it. However, at times, he says important tips without writing them on the board, so do pay attention and take good notes! Also, he can be quiet at times so try to sit closer to him rather than at the back of the room. His exams sometimes test material he didn't emphasize.
Great prof. I think i know 3 generations that had had trim and all of them said he's amazing. Easy A's on all his calc courses
He taught me first year calculus, partial and ordinary diff eqs and complex calculus. He wrote the complex calculus "text" over the summer because at the time, there was no suitable text for the course. He was one of four teachers who was instrumental in my development. I am so glad he devoted his life to teaching. Thank you, Dr. Trim.
He knows everyone by name. Once he sees your face and name written down, he will never forget you and will know everytime you skip class no matter the class size. He appears to think math is the best thing in the world. First class i failed in university was his calculus course.
Do your practices :) you will pass Kinda creepy that how he knew my name without me telling him tho :/
Good prof, awful exams. Very dynamic when teaching and has a lot of energy during lectures, downside is that he wrote the textbook so his notes are very similar to what the textbook says so you don't have much of a second resource. His exams are tough. Class averages on both midterms were around 55% so expect to study hard for a good grade.
He is very enthusiastic and loves his profession. He is a great at explaining things, but makes exams very difficult.
Trim is a legend. His lectures are hilarious and an alsolute blast. In addition, he is excellent at explaining concepts, has an abundance of office hours, and is very friendly toward students-he literally learned everyone's name. Do lots of textbook problems, old exams, be able to do his tutorial problems, and you'll do well in this class.
Fantastic lectures but expects a lot midterms and exams.
Trim is my God, my saviour. His calculus textbook replaces all religious texts. His lectures are extremely entrancing and easy to follow. He cares a lot about his students, as long as you put in the effort, and A+ will be obtained. If you can, make sure you have at least one class with him. Amen
I took Math 3 during summer, He is the Best Prof in mathematics department and really good at explaining. Attend all lectures and do as many examples you can. He care about students and remember them by name, his office hours are amazing.
This guy is as straight of a shooter as they come. He will tell you what he wants to see on an exam and follow true with his words. He is a tough prof, he moves at a blistering pace and expects you to keep up. I never once found his classes boring. This guy keeps you in it, and will call on you when he gets to know you during class. Great prof
Funny, well respected and a genius!!
So far he gave 2 extra bonus for 5 marks addition to a final grade, early bird gets that bonus mark. Which is interesting. I checked marks for previous students term test marks and most of them were on 20s out of 40. By far he is really good and he knows what math is. He asks some questions that can not answer when you have low understanding.
He was a very engaging lecturer and is very good at explaining, however for me it was a lot more helpful to just read the textbook as most of the time he would go at a pace a little too fast for me. This was not his fault and was just due to the course being very hard. If you do take MATH1210, take it with Trim.
Really engaging, you can tell he loves what he does. Really have to go to class though as his notes aren't necessarily online to look at after the class.
Trim is a super good prof! He makes all concepts of linear algebra simple and fun to understand! Going to class is enjoyable and if you attend regularly its very easy to get an A+
Trim is a math legend at U of M and that title is well deserved. He is an absolute genius and his lectures kept me interested and awake during the early hours of the morning. He cares a LOT about mathematics and has been teaching since MY Dad was in school. His lectures are well thought out and he explains things clearly and precisely.
He is the best prof i have ever had at U of M. He teaches really well and he tells you exactly what he wants to see on your midterm and your final paper. DO NOT SKIP HIS CLASSES. he hates it and he knows who miss his classes. if he knows you by name and he likes you he would be very generous in marking your paper. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS for sure.
Trim is an absolute beauty when it comes to teaching. He shows a lot of passion in his lectures and he really cares about his student's success. His lectures are fast-paced so you need to be dialed-in for you to understand. It's advisable not to skip class, as he doesn't post his notes online. Great prof. You get what you give in this class.
YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING IN HIS CLASS
Makes tough exams, but makes up for it by giving great lectures. Legend.
Trim is a funny professor. Take notes in his class, read his textbook, and go to tutorials - also do tutorials in advance, it will help. 3 assignments in the course, not difficult to do. Exams are always long so be prepared. He encourages students to participate in class a lot. Do your assignments, practice tutorials and you will have a good mark.
Great professor.
This prof will definitely make you want to learn mathematics. The way he explain the course is just amazing because he literally take your attention. Its not an easy course although! If you really put in work, you will for sure have a good mark and he will help you get there. Hes available to see students anytime he is in his office. Great guy!!
All hail our lord and savior Trim! There's never a dull moment in his lectures. His humor and enthusiasm when teaching are unmatched. The final is pretty tough though. Just make sure to do the homework and tutorials and you'll be alright.
Best professor i have ever had so far. His different and unique way of teaching makes this course interesting. He emphasizes more on proofs of formulae rather than memorizing them. He is just amazing.
I had this prof during the start of the online covid year and it was absolutely awful. He refuses to learn the internet or a computer so you wont get lectures or notes to study(he uploads a YouTube video). It takes 2 weeks to get a mediocre response over email. No feedback on work so be your own judge, and multiple choice calc exams are brutal.
Learning with Trim online was up and down. Perks: his videos made it easy to review lectures and he's so passionate about what he's teaching that it's fun to watch. Downside: we never really got to interact with him other than email because he couldn't figure out zoom or anything. I always find math tough but this was a bit harder than normal.
Not sure why this prof is liked so much, did not find his lectures that great and found his explanations confusing. Basically he is a math genious but I perfered reading his textbooks more then his teaching. Definitely not the worst though.
Great prof. He's very passionate about what he teaches, and his goal is always comprehension instead of test prep. If you have the chance to take a class with Trim, go for it! The exams are reasonable and if you do the tutorials, you'll do well on the tests. Wish he was teaching MATH 3122 next semester!
You can tell Trim has a passion for what he teaches. He posted videos for the whole course, which explained concepts very well, and I found it nice that you can work at your own pace. I did a lot of Textbook + tutorial questions, and the tests were easier then these, so grading is fair. However, it was hard to communicate with him outside of class.
Even though I am a little bit struggling at his course, I must admit Trim is a great prof. When our average for the first midterm was about 44, he asked "what can I do to provide/help you" (he added 3 office hours per week as a result). Even though he's struggling with the online thing (unfamiliar with iPad), but still trying to help his students
I had a different prof for my first calculus class back in the mid 80s. It was really high school math, don't know if it was me or the prof, but just snuck through with a C+. Was blessed to have Trim for my next three calculus and PDE classes. Material significantly harder. All B+ and As. He made it actually fun to learn.
Amazing teaching! His lectures are a life saver.
Difficult course but the professor made it a lot easier!
He is great professor and noligable, but Dr. trim we'll treat you like you have a PHD in mathematics and physics he expects a lot from you specially previous mathematics courses you took.
Amazing Teacher. Entertaining to listen too, but a stupidly hard marker. I know some people who were off my 1% from a C but he didn't let them pass. Over 40 percent have to redo the class. The curve was a joke too. Love to be taught would not want to be graded thou.
He is everything I want to be in a man. People do not glaze him enough. 10/10, best prof Ive ever had.
I also took him for Math 2130. He is extremely passionate about teaching and highly willing to spend time with and help students outside of lectures. He can be a strict marker, but it should be fine as long as you avoid all the potential math errors he mentions in class. Most importantly, do not hesitate to come to his office hours if you need help
exceptional. 10/10.
superb lecturer. best prof you will ever have.
he is the DONALD
Trim is a passionate lecturer, though grading can be strict. Take advantage of office hours and online resources like Unstuck study to maximize your chances. The class is challenging, but manageable with dedication.
Go to every class and it's like high school. Don't even bother with the textbook just go to class and do the tutorial problems. I've only ever had one math teacher better than Trim.
Deserves his reputation for being one of the best professors at the university. Fantastic lectures and great engagement with students and class. He's very personable and very passionate. Great teacher for classes involving complex topics in mathematics
The best really
Legendary.
It's Trim. Pretty self explanatory
Calc 1 & 2 + z + Donald Trim = Greatness
A legendary prof - and for good reason. You'll never forget having him. Lectures are incredibly engaging and useful, although they could focus a bit more on practice problems and a bit less on proofs of formulas/rules. This class does have tough quizzes and exams, so make sure to do all the tutorial worksheet problems to best prepare.
Amazing prof! Just go to each class, listen, and you are 80% done.
If you decided to take his class, be prepared to read the content ahead of class. This way you will actually start enjoying Math and see through Dr. Trim's visionary lens and you would never need to worry about the grades as it will handle everything.
Another W from the Don. Took this in summer and he was phenomenal. Do not skip class, but otherwise you're chilling. Math 3 isn't as scary as you think
Amazing and engaging lectures, never have I been more excited to attend a 8:30 class in my life. Super fair with marking and more than willing to adjust grade if marking seemed unfair and you can explain it 1000% recommend. All hail Donald Trim All hail the Goat
Is this guy really still alive?
