He's creepy and wears tiny shorts. :(
He tries to make O-Chem fun, but watching him talk about lipids is just sad.
Kramer from Sienfeld does Chemistry =(
weird guy. he's got this weird smile while explaining the steric hindrance.
His tests are rediculously hard...he is a graduate professor and his only undergrad class in 109C and he teaches it like it is a graduate course!
he sucks
unclear, has creepy grin and stares at students while lecturing
Get a hold of his old finals, and your guranteed an A. Sucks as a teacher, grades hard on quizes.
This guy is retarded, goes over very dumb stuff and exams on something totally different bad at explaning how to do IR and NMR's, a very ez concept, I just stayed at home and read the book and did just fine, i'd recomend people do the same.
Lectures are very unclear, tests are too hard and course is just overwhelming in general. I don't see how this guy is still teaching at UCSB. It seems nobody I've ever talked to likes him at all. Avoid at all costs!
his lectures are all over the place and he doesn't make sense. his notes are horrible and he has nasty toes up front. he tries to finish a long sentence when he's running out of breath!! study hard for this exams!
Aue sucks. Dont sit up front or you cant go to sleep and he might flash you and/or scare you with his black toes. Tests are tough and detailed. He also doesnt curve. Good luck
he ****en sucks
He sucks, he is the mad scientist trying to get back at the world because he got beat up in high school
Ridiculously high expectations of students. Doesn't curve (even w/a class avg. of 57/110). Lectures extremely disorganized. Good luck.
What a joke! He gave us a practice exam, told us to work it out... then he just gave us the exact same test on the final... If you didn't get an A in this class- you must have done no work. He's a bad teacher but the class is easy
This guy is crazy. He is the epitome of all mad scientists. When he talks he forgets to breath and it sounds like someone is standing on his stomach as he finally gasps for air. He is extremely difficult. I went from getting an A in the first 2 qtrs, to a C+ in his class. Avoid if possibly.
Terrible teacher, really really creepy. If you even go to class, sit in the way back in the middle of the row, you'll see why! The class itself is pretty easy, his quizzes are stupid and hard, but his final is EXACTLY the practice final he gives you. It's ridiculous and cheating is so easy too.
Aue may be a creepy person and ineffective professor, but his sweaters are awesome. And the thing where he runs out of air...that's just funny.
At the first lecture he looks like some sort of mad scientist, and wears sandals everyday (don't look down). I found his lectures to be fairly informative, but he could get off track to things he was interested in, which weren't tested. Tests are reasonable. Sit in front, he'll like you more.
i'd take aue over bruice any day. he's a better teacher, explains things better, and his tests are a million times easier. the midterms and final are exactly like the practice tests that he hands out
This guy is ridiculous. He's one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Not helpful to students at all. Goes off on tangents constantly. I also heard about one time when he was wearing shorts and put his foot up on a chair while talking... the whole front row saw his balls! Scaaaaary....
I don't know why everyone says he's horrible at teaching, he's really not. His lectures of concise, and straight to the point. He even holds review session before exams--be glad he gives you a practice exam because you can definately go off of that. I'd recommend taking his class with CLAS.
The only people who don't like him are the idiotic biology majors who are too stupid to learn anything with out being spoon fed. I think he's an excellent teacher.
If you understand p-chem extremely well, then all the applications and computer data will make sense. If not, then you will just come out of this class clueless. However, he does try to help and he grades rather easy.
I'm a bio major, but definitely not an "idiotic" one, and I agree with the poor reviews. This man's practice test is from the 70s! Sure, it was the same as the final, but regurgitating info isn't learning. He really like phenol. Material seriously needs to be updated, along with his office and clothes. Hes like Encino man.

I tried so hard to pass this class and I didn't! I never understood what he was saying. He blabbed too much and wanted an explanation for EVERY answer. Should have dropped his class.
He's a little wierd but funny and SO much nicer than Bruice. I took him after having Bruice for a quarter and he was in everyway superior! He's pretty spicy for an old man!
I learned a majority of the material by reading the textbook and working out problems. I felt I had a strong grasp on the concepts, but the hard work does not show on his tests, which are riddled with tricks and "exceptions" and are graded by chem nazis. I got a C, but should have got a B with the amout I learned and studied.
Aue was quite possibly the best chem professor I've had so far at UCSB. He was really into it and always willing to help out his students. He even did reviews before tests which ruled. I probably studied more than any other class to date, but I earned an A (my first one in chem). Not overly hard but not easy either. All in all, a good professor.
He's a good teacher. Very helpful and very passionate about the things he teaches. His tests might be a little hard but he does offer extra credit on his tests. He also gives out review sessions himself. Good teacher. For the final you can boost up your grade like Karahzay too.
I'm only 1/3 of the way through my first quarter with Aue, but I can already say he is the best chem teacher I have had. His examples are really helpful in remembering what reactants should be used. If you are going to take him make sure you know your mechanisms, he stresses those a lot.
I realy did not enjoy it. fekt he was very unhelpful, unclear, and creepy. learned everything in CLAS, not his lectures.
if your going to take aue be ready. aue is a tall strange man but hes very entertaining. he's not a bad teacher just make sure you go to every class because he will put things on his tests that aren't explained in the book. if you don't like bruice take aue's class b/c he is constantly bashing on her and her book. also know your mechanisms!
Totally impossible, he rambles in lecture and doesn't finish mechanisms that you are expected to know. they arent in the book so how're we supposed to get them if he doesnt explain it?? Also drops carbons during mechs, which throws you off and is really annoying.
Worst teacher I've encountered here at UCSB, and those of you who have taken other chem classes know that's saying a lot. It's most bio majors' last quarter of chem and now ~50 of us are re-taking it this summer because Aue's tests are as insane as he is. DON'T take this class, wait for a better teacher. Scratch that, wait for ANY other teacher.
I got A's in 109A & B with Bode (an excellent professor) and then when he left I had to take C with Aue... and I ended up with a D in the class. I took the class over with another professor (and about half of my former classmates from Aue) & got an A+. Also, I got an A and a B+ on Aue's midterms and STILL ended up not passing the class. Good luck!
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!!! I felt like I learned nothing from him. oh yeah, he failed half our class. best advice i could offer: don't take him!
avoid like the plague!!!! worse professor ever. completely useless both in class and at office hours. tests and whats in the book are completely different. Had to take class over and basically taught completely new things from bruice. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!
Worst chem professor I have ever had. Rambles about things that are not going to be tested on. Tests are impossible and does not explain anything in class. Take CLAS, and try to avoid this prof at all costs!
I don't understand why people don't like Aue. His tests are VERY fair. He provides his own review sessions and what professor does that. He does ramble a lot and I would recommend CLAS. I studied the night before the final and midterms and that's it and got an A- in the class! I would take Aue again. TAKE HIM!
Not a good professor at all. I learned nothing from his lectures or from office hours. Still failed the class even with attending lectures and CLAS. Hard tests, no clarity in lecture, overall a horrible experience. Avoid this professor at all costs.

boring
professor Aue really makes sure his students understand the material. He is in an excellent explainer. He tells you that everything you learned in 109B &109A from Bruice is wrong, but in reality it just wasnt understood, only memorized. He doesnt expect you to know the whole book like Bruice!
Need to go to class. midterms easy and straight forward, but the final was difficult. take him, he's really not as bad as people say. one of the better chem professors.
His lectures are cryptic, but they are fun to go to if not just to laugh at the lonely old geezer. He's not sociable and highly awkward but you can get an A if you don't get behind. If he wasn't such a freek he might be a good prof, but this man lacks the emotion and social skills that make teachers approachable. Use CLAS they teach better.
He's not as bad as everyone will tell you. He doesn't make it easy, and he's very disorganized, but the guy is brilliant. Anyone interested in more than a grade could learn quite a bit from him. My advice is go to CLAS for a review of lecture, and recopy your notes. Know the mechanisms and products. If you have that, you don't even need the book.
Aue is a respectable man, do not blame him, he expects you to learn and appreciate the subjects.
My initialy RXN to Aue was: this guy nuts/is unclear. however, now I realize he is very smart & makes you understand the material in a more encompassing manner, which requires effort BUT WILL PAY OFF. U gotta go to class if you want an A/B. Tests can be hard. Highly recommend for those in chem/biochem dept., majors in bio dept. should take Bruice.
In lectures, it's very difficult to understand him because he's all over the place, but if you're in CLAS, EVERYTHING becomes so CLEAR. This class expects you to do ALOT of individual studying and practice probs from the book (even tho its not obligated) Exams are similiar to his practice ones. Class average = 60-65%, which is a C in his grading.
At first he seems to be the worst teacher ever, but once you figure out what he expects you to study outside of the class it isn't that bad. Definitely need to study and keep up on the material or else on the test you will be screwed
Aue is awesome! He doesn't waste time, gets right down to work and expects you to actually PROBLEM SOLVE, which is what chemistry is all about. Plus he rocks the mocassins
take bruice if you want to learn more but not in depth and take aue if you want to learn less material but in more depth...tests are just like his practice ones..
There is method to his madness. He knows what he is talking about and once you get use to his style of teaching you'll find that he is one of the best. Does tend to go off on some unrelated but humorous tangents. Don't just memorize what he lectures, you have to understand why things happen to make a good grade...not a class you can cram for.
The comments below remain accurate. Grades are based entirely on insane tests. Explains what is contributing to stability, but that does not really help you on tests. Does not finish drawing mechanisms that he expects you to know.
he is great! lectures are a little disorganized but what he teaches is whats on the test. he is way better than bruice--whose tests are like 20 pgs long--and she expects you to know EVERYTHING from the book. aue is definitely a kook, but im actually enjoying the class...never thought i would say that about ochem.
He is enthusiastic but crotchety at the same time. You can learn a lot from him as long as you can also learn to think like him, which isn't so bad. Be careful about answering questions in class. He'll put you on the spot! PS: GO TO LECTURRREEEE
so basically, you better study your ass of if you want any chance of passing the class. hard as hell! oh and be prepared to answer why on everything.
Go to every lecture, study everything he does in class, dont read the book it will actually hurt you for his course. I got an A and all I did was study his notes! try to understand his methods they will help for future MCAT exam.
chem 109B! Go to every lecture, study everything he does in class, dont read the book it will actually hurt you for his course. I got an A and all I did was study his notes! try to understand his methods they will help for future MCAT exam.
He is frickin awesome. I didnt like or understand ochem with Bruice, and with Aue I now enjoy it. To do well all you need to do is take down very good notes and memorize the structures and mechanisms that he writes down and emphasizes. FLASH CARDS ARE KEY. got an A.
I love Aue! He is super into organic chemistry and he has basically studied with all the famous people in his field. Definitely HAVE to go to lecture in order to do well on the test. Make flashcards on EVERYTHING and study your butt off and you can get an A. Also, his tests are extremely similar to his real tests.
I liked his exam style way better than Russak or Bruice b/c he goes more in depth with less (but still quite a bit) of material. Study past exams, make flashcards, use CLAS!! Do those three, read the book(parts he covers) and you will do great.
ABSOLUTELY HATED AUE. Very unclear, expects you to understand how to get from step to step of a mechanism that even the book doesn't explain.. He makes his own mechanisms up. Only gave 1 midterm and a Final. I luckily passed with a C+ , Goodbye medical school.
Terrible teacher!!! Half the time hes talking about irrelevant bull crap and doesn't even cover everything on his tests in lecture. Leaves it up to you to learn most of the material on your own and offers very minimal help when asked questions. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
I believe the only useful information I got from him was which chapters to study for for the test. His lectures were all over the place and not clear, you're better off reading the book, I wish I stopped attending his class earlier to do that...
Aue is brilliant! Go to lecture to listen to what he has to say and understand main concepts, but read the text book to study for tests. He seems a bit all over the place, at first I thought his tests would be impossible but they are very straight forward if you understand examples from the book. Everyone bashing him is too lazy to apply themselves
AUE IS THE BEST! he made me love ochem! as a bio major i thought ochem was going to be hell but it def.is not! any1 saying ochem is hard especially Aue is lazy. Aue>Bruice. he really cares about the student and all he wants is to help you pass! tips: LECTURE IS YOUR BIBLE!! & PRACTICE TESTS!! anything else doesnt matter.
Pretty awesome dude. He loves Ochem and loves to teach it. He is pretty demanding and expects you to do a fair amount of work outside of class, at least in the honors section. Be sure to read the book and work lots of problems and you will be fine. The practice exams are very similar to the real ones.
Awesome professor! Although is lectures were sometimes confusing, he really knows what he's talking about and wants his students to do great. Really helpful in office hours and actually listens to concerns with his tests and will give you points back unlike other professors. Basically if you're gonna take ocher, take it with Aue!
Aue is the best, seriously all these negative comments made me submit a rating. Not only are his lectures precise, but cover various topics, some concepts not fully discussed in the book. His online resources give the student an accurate idea of what to expect in exams. It's helpful to read and do some book problems but his exams are straight.
I HATED chemistry and was so afraid to go into O-chem because of all of the negative things I have heard about how hard it is, but Aue made me love O-chem so much! I actually enjoy his lectures because he gives background as to what things are used for in the real world and he is really funny as well. Also, his tests are very straight forward.
I didn't particularly care for chem before. Aue simply made me fall in love with Chemistry. If you are anything like me (have a problem just memorizing something just as a fact and wanna know why things are the way they are) you'll love Aue. Everything I learned in this class will stay with me for a long time
He is a good professor if you come to class prepared, which is something I realized after finishing Chem 109B. I would rather have him than Bruice because he really is passionate about teaching. Take CLAS and do practice midterms/finals on gauchospace.
Aue is amazing. Best Professor at UCSB. His tests are sooo straightforward just go to his reviews and read the book!
If there was one thing you can take from him, it's that he's very enthusiastic about Organic Chemistry. You'll enjoy being in lecture if you can share that enthusiasm and you'll pass, but if not, you're going to struggle since his tests reflect a lot on his lectures. No homework whatsoever, but a lot of independent studying.
Aue is very old and therefore has trouble fully articulating the material. But if you read before class from the textbook you should be more than fine. He has old practice tests which are very similar to the actual tests and so practice off of the old tests and go to the review sessions and an A in the class is very easy to obtain.
Dr. Aue is an exceptional scientist, but a mediocre teacher. I found him unengaging and uninspiring. Do not recommend.
Aue is an amazing professor. If you show up to lecture and listen, you're guaranteed to get at least a B-. If you do most of the problems in each chapter, you have an easy A. Exams were a joke after book problems. Flash cards are a must if you hate book problems, always remember his explanations for the exams, as he doesn't follows the book
Aue tends to go off tangent a lot, but his exams are fair games. He gives you practice exams before hand on gauchospace. CLAS tutors also give out similar practice exams. As long as you read, attend class, and make your flashcards you can receive a B at least. The curve also helps a lot.
Aue is the best professor I've had at UCSB. Made me fall in love with organic chemistry. If you want to understand organic chemistry take it with Aue. I loved his lectures he is funny and really smart. A bit unorganized but CLAS helps you organize your notes. He posts his practice tests online and his tests are really similar. 100% would recommend
Had Bruice for 109A&did not enjoy it, did fairly well only bc I begrudgingly did tedious book problems wo actually learning or understanding the reactions. Aue changed my entire view of ochem by making me understand WHY reactions were occurring, I learned to love mechs & ochem. Def go to class, gives a lot of hints as to what he will test on
GO TO CLASSES! HIS TEACHING IS REALLY CLEAR AND YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND "WHY"THE REACTION ARE ABLE TO TAKE PLACE! MAKE NOTE CARDS! THEY ARE REALLY USEFUL FOR REVIEW! LOVE AUE!!
His lectures are kind of confusing and disorganized, though he is humorous at times. He seems to be helpful though. His tests are a mix of conceptual questions, predicting products, and mechanisms. Quite difficult overall, though there is a curve. He posts previous tests online.
GO TO LECTURE. Copy the notes. Do flashcards out of the notes. put in 12-14 hours a week studying. Memorize your flashcards. This is what I did. I got the A. Hardwork pays off. CLAS helps too. You're welcome.
Aue is really funny and makes his lectures interesting with his jokes (usually about relationshipshookupsmarriage & what not). Very fair grading criteria, no tricky problems. Study his old tests and go to lecture & you're set!
Favorite ochem prof I had at UCSB, and I had gainer and bruice as well. If you want to succeed, don't miss class, enroll in CLAS, and do his old tests! He practically gives you what mechs will be on it, and multiple choice parts of the tests were relatively easy. You will LEARN the WHY of ochem, and it will make it so much better for other quarters
I really liked Aue. His teaching style makes you really understand fundamental concepts in organic chemistry, which is really helpful for upper divisions and for studying for the MCAT. His tests are hard but predictable (very similar to past exam, lecture notes and CLAS problems). If you do the work, you should get an A.
Aue was my favorite out of 3 different teachers I had for the 109 series. Show up to class, LISTEN to the key points he emphasizes in lecture (they will show up on the midterms!), enroll in CLAS. It's not hard to do well in his class if you practice and make study guides for the midterms. His lectures are kind of unorganized but CLAS will save you!
Best O-chem professor at UCSB. Test clear. Theory heavy, not just mechs!! Paula killed me, but Aue knows how to teach!!!!
Aue is the man! Tests were extremely fair. I failed the first midterm, but ended up with an A- in the class. The key to success in his class is not doing book problems, but making a sheet to memorize products, reactants, and catalysts, and special conditions for every reaction until it is second nature. Tests are mainly predict products/mechs
Aue was a really fair ochem professor! Although his lectures can get confusing sometimes because he goes deep into the "why" of certain topics, his tests are mostly surface level concepts. Actual tests are the same format as his practice midterms/finals and he gives a generous curve. SO SO passionate about ochem & overall great professor!
Great professor but his lectures are very disorganized. Makes his exams just like the practice exams, so if you can do those you will pass the class. It is important to read the book and do as many practice problems as you can as well, but the practice exams are the most important part.
Never went to lecture because I found his lectures disorganized and hard to follow. He likes to bounce around topics a lot and pulls out concepts that are not in the book and puts them on the test. VERY hard to study for since you can't use the book suggested for class to study. CLAS Tutoring is the ONLY thing that helped me pull through.
Read book throughly (every chapter he assigns) and outline notes!! His lectures are confusing but go and write down everything to reference later. Pay attention to the mechanisms he emphasizes those will usually be worth the most points on tests! Very easy to do well if you put in the effort!
My favorite professor at UCSB. O-chem is awesome if you actually study and try to UNDERSTAND material. Theres no way to memorize the material. Aue's lectures are amazing and the dude is awesome. Write down everything he says during lecture and go back and look at your notes and make sure you've understood. Go to him if you're confused.
Funny guy and interesting lectures, although he gets a little off track. Read the book, do practice problems, and do his practice exams (very important)! Copy down relevant problems he does in class and read his handouts, too.
BEST OCHEM PROF. He may be messy but overall the class is fair. I prefer him over the other prof.
Once you figure out his teaching style you will pass the class. Copy everything he writes on the board and go home and learn it. Make flashcards of predict the products and study his practice exams he posts. Tests are half multiple choice half written.
Aue is the best ochem professor Ive had! (Ive had bruice and gainer) His exams are very fair and he mostly only expects you to know what he goes over in lecture SO GO TO CLASS. He may seem a little unorganized and all over the place but as long as you keep up, you will be fine!!
I want Aue to be my Grandpa. His stories are always worth the listen and his dry humor is the best. He is pretty cool because you don't "need" to use the book because he takes his test question directly from his lectures. He can be disorganized at times but check with friends to make sure your notes are correct. Also is very practical. no tricks.
Best ochem prof. Really knows what hes talking about and makes his lectures interesting and relevant. His tests are exactly like his practice tests and this class is easy to do well in if you stay on top of the reading and do all the recommended practice problems and practice tests.
Dr. Aue is an ICONIC KING and the best professor I have ever had at UCSB. I am SO glad I got into the honors ochem section, bc he is the best prof. His tests are very predictable, and he teaches so you UNDERSTAND rather than memorize. He teaches the concepts so well. Just an amazing, inspirational man.
Amazing professor! Highly recommend taking ochem one quarter off just to get Aue. His test questions come directly from lectures, so I think it is easier than other ochem classes. He really cares and wants you to understand why things happen, which is the best way to learn ochem!
Aue is a king. had him for 109b and 109c. both were hard just because of the difficult material, but not because of Aue. you literally will not pass without attending every lecture and paying attention. know every mech he does in class and proof your lecture notes with the book
His class was fun and tests weren't hard as long as you know the mechanisms (really know them well) No homework but better do the problems he listed on his syllabus. He gave out practice tests that were very similar to the actual midterm and final (he reused some questions)
Again Dr. Aue is an iconic king who is one of the best professors I have ever had. His exams are very reasonable, but you must be pretty knowledgeable of the mechanisms, the theory behind why they happen, and predicting the products. He also has questions about synthesis. He really wants everyone to do well, is very caring and nice.
I had Aue the whole honors series. While I don't think any OChem class is easy, Aue really makes the effort of explaining why reactions occur and applications. I used the textbook to supplement lectures but not critical. Know every mech he puts on the board, even obscure ones, and put the focus on understanding rather than memorizing.
Took Aue for 109ABCH and he's the sweetest man!! Even though I felt like I wasn't understanding anything from the lectures, going home and reading the book to supplement them really helped! Know everything that he writes down on the board and pay attention. Wants all his students to succeed and even bought us lunch after our final once.
Dr. Aue is really nice and caring, and wants all his students to succeed. Had him for all 3 quarters of honors ochem. Tests are mechanism and theory heavy, also has predict the products. Writing down everything he puts on the board, organizing it, and making flash cards will help your grade. Tells funny stories.
Goes super slow, but a guy that genuinely wants you to understand. He tries to help you understand rather than memorize. He repeats things over and over to stress what's important. He gives practice tests that are almost identical to his real exams.
Goes pretty slow. No book use needed at all. He tests based on what he lectures. Make sure to use his old exams he posts as they are very similar to his current ones
Aue is terrible at explaining what he does in class and dismissed questions. He assumes you have already learned everything from the textbook and only goes over vague examples. All practice questions/exams given are from 2006-2014. No homework or way to practice. Basically a waste of your time...
Aue is a great and fair professor. Exams have few curveballs and everything that he goes over in class is super important and always tested. He is a little disorganized but not too bad. He goes against the book at times so going to lecture is important. He responds super fast over email and just overall wants you to understand WHY not just memoriz
He gives practice exams that are almost identical to the real ones and only tests on what he goes over in class. Lectures are pretty disorganized and hard to follow though. Overall hes iconic king.
Aue is a great researcher and teacher for honors or 109C but for 109A, he is quite possibly the WORST professor you could ever take. If you don't go into his class with a very advanced chemistry background (that you probably don't have if you're taking 109A), good luck. This class is not fair and studying/knowing the material doesn't mean success.
Aue is an iconic king. His lack of structure makes his lectures confusing at times, but if you see him during office hours or after review sessions he is super helpful and genuinely cares about your success. Practice tests were very similar to the real ones and his curve is massive (around 10%).
Aue is an iconic king. His class is challenging and can be confusing, but what do you expect out of an organic chemistry class? Hes a bit disorganized, however his practice tests are extremely similar to his midterms/final and very fair. If you go to his office hours or stay after review sessions he genuinely will help you for as long as needed.
He's such a nice man and he genuinely wants his students to succeed but his lectures are sooooo confusing. He only writes on the board (no slides whatsoever and no iClicker) and he can be so confusing. If I hadn't had my nose in the textbook the whole quarter and gone to CLAS religiously I absolutely would have failed. But he's just so damn nice!
Aue is a great teacher! Sometimes he will talk about chemistry far beyond the scope of this material, but he makes it clear that we do not need to know that. Will usually only test on what he lectures on and will be clear about what is on the exams. You might find his lectures to be confusing, but just a matter of getting use to. FAIR TESTER!
i literally could not take away anything from his lectures, his handwriting was messy like a 5 year old and i basically self taught the class. His quizzes was on material that we didn't go over in lecture. His class emails were like essays you had to read and seemed petty.
amazing!!! I definitely was not expecting this after having Lewis for 109a (another really good professor). Just make sure you take thorough notes in lecture and CLAS and everything will be okay :') Made 109b tolerable and related it to real life applications so it didn't seem like pointless information
A lot of the lectures for this course seemed a bit disconnected from the actual homework. HE had a few lectures going over how to build the molecules in Molden and more or less what Gaussian calculated for thermochemistry and orbitals but not much apart from that to build understanding. Lecture focused on MO and HMO with a bit of QM
