The only teacher who made true what they say at the beginning: "This is NOT an easy course". Dr. Becker completely destroyed my first paper and I felt horrible. Somehow his passionate lectures pulled me through. The class ended with 6 (?) people and I aced the course!!! Pay attention, do your homework. And LISTEN to his ideas about papers!!!
way to stuck in his own ideas to be a philosophy teacher.
Becker is one of those Prof.s that thinks their class is your only class and doesn't believe in giving As. His class is the only one I have dropped in my entire college career. I found him very unhelpful when I wanted to discuss my progress in the class and how to do better on exams as well as his grading method which I strongly disagreed with. I am currently taking a Philosophy or World Religions class that has regaind my faith in the PHIL department at ACC, because after this class, it was shot.
I dropped this class because this teacher was more worried about getting his opinions across to people rather than teaching them something useful. He shot down people's ideas if he didn't agree with you and he was really rude.
this guy is into himself. try and coppy his ideas exactly to get a good grade
I really enjoyed this class but it wasn't easy. He made that very clear at the beginning of the class. The key to this class are your notes. If you don't have good notes you won't do well. But I learned so much and it gave me disipline.
Not for children. This man has a goal to teach to people who want to learn, as opposed to someone just trying to get by. It is about thinking, after all. He MAKES you think.
Extremely Intelligent. Gotta listen really really carefully because he speaks really fast and with really big words and uses extremely proper English. Better to take a recorder than to take notes. Very reachable, and helpful.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!! AVOID AT ALL COST! His daily writings are a joke (he doesn't actually read them; just makes sure you have a bunch of citations), his tests are impossible (nobody in my class ever made more than a high-C), and he is extremely full of himself. If you absolutely must take him, avoid talking to him because you will be ridiculed.
I read these and was terrified of his class, but I actually really enjoyed it. It's entertaining. There is a LOT of work and you actually have to have brain cells to pass, but I really liked it. It's a hard class and you have to study a lot (FORM STUDY GROUPS), but it's worth it in the end. But yeah, this class is NOT for the faint of heart.
HORRIBLE PROFFESOR!!!! I took his online course and I ended up dropping it. The test... so extremely hard. The homework... not graded but required. And whenever I emailed him to get help, he never replied back. He also expected you to get onto Wimba everytime he had a session and when you didn't he would email you mean messages. Very rude teacher!
Just awful. I took his DL Ethics course and he is the worst professor I've ever had. Zero feedback, didn't even bother to grade my last two assignments. Critical thinking and disagreement are not tolerated. Just awful. Don't waste your time. Pompous, arrogant and rude.
I love Mr.Becker. He is very committed to getting his students to understand what's going on in the class and takes the time to explain and re-explain if needed. Very reachable, very helpful and he's a nice guy!! I have yet to be disappointed by him and his method of teaching. Yes, the class is difficult but not at all impossible to pass.
Took Intro to philosophy. Extremely hard but WELL WORTH THE EFFORT! He's brilliant and wants to share his knowledge with you. You HAVE to read and take notes, very important if you want to pass. He throws a lot at you so recording his lectures is a good idea. He's always available for questions. if you're open, you will be filled with knowledge!^^
He is very knowledgeable on the subject but extremely demanding. I put more work into this class than any other class I have ever taken only to receive a C. He expects you to answer each essay question perfectly (and by perfectly I mean the way he delivered it in class). There is a paper due every week and his tests are amazingly difficult.
Donald Becker is probably the most intellectual man I have ever listened to. His lectures are interesting, passionate, and full of great material. This class is NOT a blow off class. Making it to lectures is a necessity. I put in the effort and got a great experience from this class. I highly recommend you take Becker!!
Distance learning. Unreasonable workload. Not an intro level class. Very strict in grading the numerous writing papers. Must regurgitate very difficult information in text. Was excited about taking this class, now I have no interest in ethics. Don't feel that I learned anything.
This professor is extremely difficult. Do not take this class unless you are willing to devote a significant amount of time to it. Weekly writings, weekly post to blackboard, readings every night and you MUST attend class and form a study group to do well on tests. Some of the information is hard to understand and he grades very hard.
Dr. Becker's class is not a blow off class. He makes you think outside the box and is very passionate about his work. He is extremely helpful but ONLY if you ask! So speak up! The class is hard but interesting and overall a great teacher!
This class was really hard for me. I just came back to college after not being in school for several years and the work load he gives is unreasonable. You have to post something on blackboard every week, do weekly writing and readings, a paper, and the test are essay questions...it would be easy if that was the only class I took.
took him for into to phil. i worked my butt off & made an a. it's a hard class but very interesting. he's also very nice and helpful if you try. tip: i would record the lectures & listen to them twice!
Dr. Becker sets high expectations for his students but if you put in the effort and take advantage of his office hours and phonen number the expectations are easily met. Not a blow off class. TIP: Record lectures and just pay attention in class. Workload that he gives is easily managable with the rigt maturity.
If you want to keep a high college gpa do not take this class. I dedicated every Sunday afternoon to studying and writing papers for 5 hours at a time. He destroys your work then makes you feel like an idiot. If you don't repeat his opinions in the tests then you will fail. The class might as well be called dr. Beckers philosophies.
Horrible class, everything I turned in was never good enough. I took the online course, and I wish I never did.
HORRIBLE CLASS! TOOK IT ON-LINE. HARSH GRADER ON ASSIGNMENTS. SYLLABUS WASN'T CLEAR ON WHAT HE WANTED EXACTLY. VERY PICKY.
Took the Intro Ethics Online summer course. This class is not as hard as people claim ...the key to get a good grade is READ ALL ASSIGNED readings they will help you ace ur papers. And he is super nice and helpful especially when he knows you are making an effort. Not A Blow class...my papers were avg 12 pg single spaced
I wouldn't recommend Becker. Philosophy is already hard to understand, but himself in general just doesn't help. His sarcastic comments are irrelevant and unnecessary when someone asks him to repeat himself. I regret not rating him before I enrolled in his class, so this is a clear warning!! DON'T!
Extremely tough, wouldn't recommend it if you're just looking for a good grade. That being said his teachings are amazing and positively affected the way I look at life. The guy's a genius and it rubs off.
The class was disorganized. He did not allow time between assignments to get help. He will choose the hardest problems from your homework to test you over. If I had known about rate my professor I would have known how bad he was and never taken him. Hindsight 20/20
This was not an easy class even if it was an intro class. But Professor Becker made that perfectly clear on the first day. You're best bet is to record his lectures and go over the exam questions right after each class. This class challenges you to do the best you can. He also wants you to ask him for help and stresses that you do so.
First of all, I would like to suggest you to study a lot, pay close attention, and he does lecture fast. Overall, he need to change the way he teaches and perhaps he will see better results in his studets, for my part I will do the same evaluate what I did wrong to change and not do the same kind of study method.
He says he class is difficult, but it really isn't. 3 Unit Test, 1 Comprehensive Final, and 1 Paper with a mandatory Rough Draft. His syllabus contains all possible questions that can appear in the tests. Is more than willing to answer questions. Just record the lectures, and answer the questions while listening to it. Not that complicated.
Let me just say this is NOT the class for people who aren't fast learners. Prof Becker moves through the material so quickly and explains it in ways that the book explained better. Not to mention philosophy is already a hard subject as it is. Maybe if he changes his teaching approach he will find his students have better grades. NOT RECOMMENDED
Amazing class. Extremely difficult but worth it. Dr. Becker is passionate and serious about learning. Lots of reading, lots of writing. Don't fall behind. If you don't "get it," find someone in the class who does and study with them. He tells you exactly what he wants on the tests. Read the syllabus! He expects you to do your best.
AWFUL. Don't get me wrong, he teaches the material just fine, but he really doesn't want to be at ACC and will tell you that the only people who receive A's on his papers are UT students. He looks down on his students and laughs at them when they ask for help. He will make you feel like an idiot for being in community college.
Dr. Becker is GREAT! People whine about the deadlines, but it was completely reasonable. He truly makes himself available, even allowing you to call him at home. He wants his students to learn and really puts himself out there for that. The class is hard, but manageable with effort and communication. Use all your resources from the syllabus!
Read the book- spark note it first. Do what he tells you when he tells you. FIND THE TIME! Do it. This class is easy, the thing about philos. is that you can never be wrong! Just explain WHY you are right, in the theories he taught. You can talk about donkeys and butterflies, but if you throw some theories in it explaining it your golden. Easy A.
What a wonderful professor! I absolutely adored his class. But this class is EXTREMELY hard. You have to take notes, read and study. Make it easier on yourself, get involved in study groups and ask him questions. Don't study the night before-that's a horrible idea. RECORD him during his lectures and you will be just fine.
Very difficult class but if you do the work you will do fine. Trying to make an A? read EVERY single reading and make sure you understand it enough to write at least 3 pages worth of it. His grades are simple 2 tests, a paper, and daily writings. If you dont put effort you will not succeed. His personality was very nice he is a good helpful teacher
Professor Becker is very rude in his grading, and offers no constructive criticism. He assigns way too much work. If you are taking any other important classes, do not take this class. He expects a paper a week as well as nightly discussion board posts and a lot of reading. I had to drop his class. It was just too much for a Philosophy class.
Dr. B was the best teacher I could have had for Philosophy. He challenged me to do my best and because of it I was re-inspired to be the A+ writer and student I knew I was deep down. He knew I could do better and held me accountable. If you pay CLOSE attention, take good notes and form a study group, you will do fine. I gained so much.
Explained nothing. Extremely hard course to take. Hard grader and very inconsistent with his responses. Did not explain anything.
If you're looking for an easy A, do NOT take this class. It requires a lot of reading and a considerable amount of effort but he is always in his office hours and available by phone and email to help with test prep and papers and the class actually teaches you how to think for yourself and back up your position with valid arguments.
Hard class! Lots of reading. Would not have taken if I wasn't required to for my degree.
Your notes are graded, you have homework every class. You have to come to class ready to take notes and participate in discussion by asking questions. The people who hate it are the people who don't want to any work and expect the extra credit to save them, despite they haven't done anything to deserve it. It's actually a creative discussion class.
Sure Becker is tough, but that's because he expects his students to give it their all. Don't slack off or skip class because you feel like it. Missing a class is like missing a week. He grades your notes, so pay attention to what you are learning. Remember that the learning labs are there for you to use.
This is not an easy class. If you want to improve as a student it is worthwhile. The fact that Dr. Becker is willing to work with you almost all the time is the saving grace. Just send him an email with your best guess as to what's going on and you'll very likely get feedback. Yes, its a lot of work but he's helpful.
This professor is one of those who wants you to put so much effort, I mean a lot of homework essays of more than 1500 words. I know he cares a lot for the subject but a lot of us are required to take it, at least make it fun. Abortion does not impact my life and I hate to argue about it. He's syllabus was not clear on the instructions.
I took Ethics Online during the summer with this teacher. It was a huge mistake! He has high expectations for students he is not teaching, the assignments are outdated, & even though he doesn't tell you what his position is you need to argue what he wants on the papers. Don't defend your own ideas, defend his and you'll pass. Would NOT take again.
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken. He helps when you ask for it but when he explains it, it is still confusing. I would not recommend taking Logic online.
I took this class online during the summer. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY A!! DON"T DO IT! I am a 4.0 student and this is the hardest class that I have ever taken. Sure, the grading scale is written on your assignments, but you need to write at an upper-graduate level to even think about receiving an overall B in this class.
Hard grader on essays.
Lots of reading for class, literally daily. Hard grader. If you don't recall stuff he said in lecture on your test, you won't pass. But like any class, put in some effort and you will pass the class.
Daily writing from essays & notes graded. Don't fall behind! USE THE SYLLABUS, all test q's are provided - must memorize outline of q's to cover all the points he discusses. Recording the classes really helped when doing test prep. Heavily encourage speaking w/ him outside of class (coffee/phone call) & meeting w/ classmates to prep for tests.
Don't expect to succeed in his class on your own. Becker encourages interactive and integrated studies. For testing, get a group and share material, that is the best way to understand and learn the material.
Lets just say that you know the class is hard when two thirds of the participants drop out by the end of the semester. This was a tough class to take. The word count on the essays rivaled those of past term papers and the grading criteria was unspecific. I'm glad that it's over to say the least.
Donald Becker is a great professor. His class changed my mind about controversial issues by really making me think about the "why" that supports them. The more you interact and participate in class, the better you'll do.
I would not have taken this class if I didn't have to have it for my degree. You have to defend his issues but of course, he will not tell you where he stands on the issues. Write at a post graduate level considering all authors viewpoints and your viewpoints are not valid and you might get a C paper at best if you use your own views as arguments.
Very tough! He seems to get a kick out of it since he convinced multiple students who are 4.0 to take his class again hopefully for a better grade. But they were both doing poor in the class again. I spent 12 hours on his papers and received a C. Phil. is ancient and weird so off course Becker prefers to be hard. 0.25/point on clarity of thesis.
This class is a lot of work. But Dr. Becker really makes himself available for feedback on anything assigned. It is the kind of class that will help you be a better critical thinker and organize your time better if you take it seriously. It is not some easy class you can coast in but you can get a lot out of it and come away with a decent grade.
If you like being told that all of the learning you've done in English classes on how to properly write and cite an essay is garbage, please feel free to take this class. He gives no direction and he likes to use words that make you second guess what you think you read. He is out of touch with technology so the online class is unorganized.
Buyer beware. If you goal is to lower your GPA - then take Professor Becker's class, otherwise choose another professor. He won't give you a chance to get a good grade no matter how hard you try. My GPA was 4 but thanks to Dr. Becker it is considerably lower now. I warned you. You are welcome.
He doesn't teach you anything if you take distance learning class. He makes you read a textbook on your own, "Doing Ethics". Then you answer his questions in the discussion board. He doesn't make any comments if they are right or wrong. Then, your write 4 essays. He grades them with C of D because you misunderstood everything.... And that's it.
If you are looking for an easy ethics class then do not take Becker's class, there is no structured syllabus as he gives you different links for information regarding deadlines and you need to hunt for dates to turn in papers or make posts. He is still bitter about being a failed UT proffesor so he will make sure you read his "published" works.
The class is entirely graded by 6 test. but he gives you some leeway (80% gets you an A). If you plan on majoring in CS, take this class after or at the same time as Discrete Math. Many of the concepts transfer and it makes the reading go by much quicker.
Becker's class is very past paced, lots of assignments, very little tangible grading. Wouldn't take it again or tell anyone else to take it.
I took ethics with Becker back in fall 2016 and made an A. It was a difficult class, yes, and you will have to work for your grade. That being said, you can get an A in this class. You wont breeze by and get an A, but its doable if you actually study like youre supposed to in school. Came out feeling like I learned a lot by the end.
Four written assignments, no exams/final, & participation on discussion board. What could have been a comfortable course really became frustrating as assignments weren't graded in a timely manner (outside of what is posted in syllabus) and feedback was less than optimal.
He is a tough grader. He barely gives any extra credit work except to make an additional 60 "meaningful" posts to the discussion board. The problem with that is that everyone already has to make two posts to the DB as it is so the question is thoroughly answered and most avenues explored on the topic.
All this class was Discussion Boards and papers. Everyone seemed to take different amounts of time on it only to barely pass. DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING!
Couldnt be happier with my choice in taking Professor Becker for ethics! I made an A for the course and though it wasnt easy, it is possible for others to do the same. You need to attend every class, take very good notes, prepare for each test question as the material is being covered, and set up meetings to go over your prepared test answers.
Donald Becker is perhaps the most outgoing and professional professor I have ever had. He really wants every single one of his students to succeed; it may not seem like that at first due to the rigor of the course, but he genuinely cares for his students. If you wish to get an easy A do not take this class. If you wish to truly learn, take it.
It's difficult to receive a good grade on papers; he gives insufficient instructions for all papers; he does respond to emails but has a condescending tone with students; makes the student(s) feel inferior to him; only extra credit given is the writing of 60 additional posts to his Discussion Board post questions; I do not recommend Mr. Becker.
Definitely on a high horse. Some of my best written papers that I have done in my entire life were for this course, and I came out with C's on most of them. It seems like this professor gets off on his power and doesn't want to see students succeed. And on the final paper for the course, he never told me my grade and he didn't post it on blackboard
Very challenging Professor. Loves if you participate in class. Emailing him shows that you are trying to understand the material.I took him for Ethics, I likely failed every exam but because I tried to participate in class with the group and him I passed with B. Read the material before class, if you know the material he will love it
Dr. Becker expects a lot from his students but it's because he wants his students to do well in their future endeavors. He is always willing to help explain things better during office hours and answer questions, but you need to ask! His class isn't easy but he will push you to do your best work, so take his feedback and apply it to your work.
He doesnt put grades in and when he does it makes no sense because of his grading system. He is really picky about your answers on tests so you need to explain every single thing possible in detail. Theres no extra credit and theres homework every night. The notes also count as a grade which is the only thing that helps your grade in the end.
Professor Becker is so so intelligent, learning from him is great. But he won't give you a good grade without the hard work. Notes are graded and there are weekly writings and reading. Tests have essay questions. If you truly want to learn about philosophy and you put in the effort you'll get a good grade and have a good time.
Definitely, the hardest class I have taken in my entire education. He is a bit aggressive and a really really hard grader. The tests are an open answer and you have to write an essay on basically every question. Definitely a beneficial course where you learn a lot but not as enjoyable when the professor is abrasive and a very direct grader.
This was my first semester of college, and was not one to be taken lightly. Professor Becker states his expectations clearly, and they must be met to pass. With that being said, his course was a good wake up call for me and I soon realized what it takes to be successful. His class provides education in philosophy as well as good life skills.
I am taking his online Phil. course and almost my entire class is failing. His tests are designed to take no less than 2hrs and there is always extra stuff that we never went over on each test. Everything about him and his class is confusing. I asked him a direct question and his response was to ask my classmates (online class). AWFUL PROFESSOR.
Hands down Dr. Becker is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His class is difficult and definitely a lot of work, but out of all my ACC classes, I think this is the only one that has prepared me for a four year university. He grades at that level, too. He is very accessible outside class, and there is also a TA who you can go to for extra help.
I should have did research on this professor before signing up for his class. I am fine with a professor who is tough on his students but who is fair. This has been by the worst class I've taken. I did enjoy the readings but this professor sucked the fun out of it. Most of his assignments did not make any sense to me. Have yet to get my final grade
This was hardest class I had for the semester. He's not very clear. His lectures are heavy, tiring and wordy. I met with his TA and he was so much more understanding and clear. He spelled it in Lehman terms and I passed. A C but passing. His test are 4 question (300-1000 words each question) There's a paper, oh boy! it nearly killed me.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. For being in the middle of a pandemic, this class asks too much and Dr. Becker doesn't seem to care about his students success at all. Almost my entire class is failing. The amount of work is overbearing. It seems like even when you're trying your best, you still barely pass :/
This course has been challenging. I dont blame Professor Becker tho I just think taking this course durning the pandemic makes it that much harder. If you really focus and set your mind to this class and read the material Thoroughly you will not have a problem.
Major papers required too much wording, and after spending many hours working on them, I still barely made a C. Was not giving us points for posts, but would take points off if you didn't do the posts. Excellent at explaining the discussions on videos. It helped us understand the units.
He's a great guy, by all means, I take more issue with the online format, it's hard to know what he expects from essays from just the pre-written requirements and corrections after. His slides are extremely important for the course so I would ask him to show them again if you miss one, and for the love of god SAVE your test answers.
Great guy and very approachable class, the problem is the online format. Its hard to know what he wants from your essays if you dont talk to him. When you hear Kant get ready to read boring stuff. His slides are very important so take notes from them always. And please SAVE YOUR TEST ANSWERS, the final test includes any question from the course.
Professor Becker is a nice person, but his class is extremely difficult to pass with a good grade. Throughout the course, instructions were unclear many times, the online format was absolutely awful, professor Becker graded extremely hard, not many grades are in the grade book & due dates were so random. Wouldn't take his class if you can avoid it.
Only four things graded the whole semester (essays)! Tons of discussion post that arent graded but if you dont do them it takes points off your essay! Essays had to be wrote a certain way and have certain text or you were wrong. He is nice and responds to emails fast but if your grade is important DONT TAKE HIM!!!
Took the class over the pandemic. Really thorough lectures and he does well clarifying or rewording if asked by students. Grades pretty tough but tests start off being worth less than future tests which I thought was a thoughtful way of setting up test grades. Good notes from lectures are a must to do well.
I gotta preface this with I like this guy. He is a good professor, his blackboard is set up well, he is very easy to reach. He tells you everything you need to know. The material is difficult. You need to really focus, take good notes, study, and prepare to get a good grade, it is not an easy class.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST professor I have had yet. I dropped him after 6 days. Incredibly rude and unwilling to help when you have a question. Ridiculously hard grader with ridiculous expectations for a freshman level class. Horrible lectures where he just rambles. Stay far away unless you want to hate your life. Also his teeth were gross to look at lol
Loads of writing and test answers should be long. If you prep and ask questions you will be fine. He's very easy to reach outside of class. Not a bad looking guy either. If you put in the effort it is noticed.
I will never advise anyone to choose this professor! It seems to me that he did not like to see students succeed. Philosophy is a nice subject but he makes it hard for all of us in the class, I'm not sure if anyone has an A or B in this class. It was so awful throughout the semester! "you better think twice to choose this man period".
Daily grades are maxed to B's. No one makes over a C on a test no matter how much you study. His curriculum are the opposite to what the tests and final are to come. AVOID AT ALL COST.
I'd much rather chew a hammer than take this guy's course again. Daily writes are maxed to a B and the tests are graded on a gradually increasing weight scale. He makes no effort to give individual feedback and grades like a graduate class for an Intro. Run far away from this guy, he will ruin your GPA for fun. SAVE YOUR BLOODY TEST ANSWERS!
This class was a lot just for an intro. There are daily writings, literally just do them and you'll get a B. If they're good you'll occasionally get a B+ but don't hold your hopes too high. I really encourage to work with others since he supplies the test questions well in advance. He is not a mean teacher, but he is very passionate.
Get out!!
I'd sooner go through 4 years of high school than deal with him and I started 5 days ago. Terrible learning experience with a professor who doesn't respond to email, doesn't grade things or provide instruction, he doesn't even live in the same state so good luck trying to meet with him for questions!
He doesn't even teach the course. Fully online course, but he decides to have an assistant lead two mandatory zoom meetings late in the evening that is absolutely useless. No books, just open ended required readings that are as vague as his instructions.
Truly one of the worst classes I have taken at ACC. Avoid this Professor at all costs, wait for the next semester if you have no other options. Its not that you will not learn, the material is ok. My whole grade was made up of 3 essay's. no one in my class that I am aware of has made anything higher than a B. Insane amount of discussion boards.
I did like this professor and was able to get some extra credit because I paid attention to the video lectures. I just want to say that make sure you take good notes in this class and look ahead if you can online to view the upcoming requirements for readings, etc. Make sure you plan ahead and REALLY have time for this class. TOUGH GRADER.
I wouldn't take this guy again. I was optimistic at first but as the semester went on, the amount of writing (discussion boards) became difficult to keep up with. Your essay's will have lengthy word counts and you wont get any final feedback. I never had an issue contacting him. despite being DL with no time, he added SI meeting in the evening.
This class with Professor Becker is no easy feat. With unclear instructions, harsh grading, and an overwhelming workload, it's a real challenge. However, Unstuck AI's AI-powered study tools can be a game-changer for managing the demands. Overall, it's a tough but manageable class with effort.
this class caused my first ever college crash out. this class was terrible. got accused of ai and he was terrible about it. so much reading I thought my eyes were gonna fall out. discussion boards were insufferable. si meetings didn't help neither. please take someone else. save yourself.
This class is just abhorrent. There is no clear grading criteria, the SI sessions don't help at all, and the material itself is very difficult. Also the weight of each exam is extremely weird, with the second to last exam having most of the grade weight and the final exam only being 7% of the grade.
