The TA's will be your best friends. USE THEIR HELP. Teacher comes across initially as dry and uptight, but stick with the class, and he totally loosens up. Power point slides are useful when studying for the tests. Tests are difficult, but talk to the TA's.

Great Professor. This is a no stress class. There are two quizes every class period... but they are cake. I got an A in the class and I'm an english major. Use the TA's and their review sessions, have common sense, and go to class and the A is yours.

Dr. Breakwell is a fantastic teacher. One of my favorite professors at BYU. This is also one of the most interesting classes I've taken. He makes the class fun and exciting. I definitely recommend him to anyone.

Some people say it's hard, but the only hard thing about it is going at 7:30 in the morning. I guess I can see how the concept quizzes would be hard if you don't go to the reviews. Great class, great professor. Your grade will actually reflect your learning. I felt like I learned a lot and I got an A. That's not the case in every class.

Fairly easy class. General overview of microbiology. Reading quiz at beginning of every class over what you will go over that day (pretty easy). You can then leave, but I suggest staying if you want a good grade. Dr Breakwell makes it his point for you to understand. If you don't understand, just raise your hand. He makes class enjoyable.

Hes pretty cool. The class doesn't have big exams...but lots of small quizzes. You have to be on your toes to keep up with it...but not nearly as much as other science or chem classes. He offers several ways of getting more points in the class by doing projects and activities. He even does podcasts. Quizzes every day in class.

I loved this class. Great professor, reasonable testing and grading. Its not easy, but not too hard either. Grading is mostly on six tests, six disease quizes, and final. I guess that seems like a lot, but its not that bad. I learned a lot and enjoyed learning it. That makes this class worth taking regardless of how hard it may be.

He was an interesting teacher. I wasn't all that fond of his tests. There were way too many and even one the last day of class (followed by a final). He didn't seem all that willing to help out whenever I went to him. I wasn't fond of the TAs- they didn't really have any idea of what they were talking about. Good class overall.

Breakwell knows what he's talking about! His lectures were usually boring but he tried to make them interesting. There were so many tests and quizzes that were impossible to study for! Expect to study HOURS for each test. Online book is pretty much a waste of money. Attendence isn't really mandatory. He puts all of his lectures onlne. Score!

There were a lot of tests but they are MUCH easier than the other professors tests from what I hear. Quizzes were open book and you could take them as many times as you want till you got a 100. Dr. Breakwell is one of the most considerate teachers ever. He understands that a beginning class is meant to be easy and never pushed us past our limits. He changed due dates, allowed take home tests, and even dropped a test because we said we didn't want it. He is very aware of student's needs. Loved his class and love him!

Prof Breakwell is great. His tests are very straight forward. This was one of the most fair classes I have taken at BYU. He sincerely wants you to do well and if you are willing to work you can do long extra credit assignments that will really help your grade. Took this class at the Salt Lake Center. Highly Recommend! Gives 5 exams that are 30 questions each (study his slides closely), 6 quizzes on Learningsuite that you can take as many times as you want, and the final is worth 15% of your grade. Very fair, very respectful to students.

Breakwell is a great guy! His tests aren't too difficult if you go to the reviews and use the study packet. He gives extra credit for his tests, and his lectures are pretty enjoyable. This class isn't bad if you study! I've heard that Dr. Breakwell is the easiest professor that teaches MMBIO 221, so he's a great choice! His tests aren't usually too hard. Really good professor. Show up to the TA reviews and you'll pass the course no problem. Disease quizzes lectures are every Friday and I never showed up and just studied online from the quizzes and got an A on all of them. I have other friends taking this class from other professors and Dr. Breakwell is definitely the way to go

I would definitely recommend taking MMBIO221 from Professor Breakwell. Most of the time, I really enjoyed the lectures. For the majority of the time, I found it easy to be attentive, and I feel that I learned a lot out Microbiology that is applicable to normal every day life. An A is easily attainable if you study and attend the test reviews.

He asks you to buy the book but you never use it. He has casual fridays, and has an awesome teaching style in that you remember what he says. Low number of assignments so points really matter and therefore attendance but his exams aren't the worlds toughest and all the TAs and him want you to do well.

Professor Breakwell is a great professor because he loves what he teaches. I took his class from the Salt Lake section so the tests were take home and we went through material a lot faster. Nonetheless I felt like I learned a lot and Dr. Breakwell cares more about what you learn than the grade you earn. Like he says, "I'm soft as butta'"

I had a hard time in this class since I am a freshman and didn't understand the things he was teaching since he used more scientific terms. I also felt like there was so much material and things I had to memorize that I struggled. But he is a good teacher and is willing to help if you ask. Just be prepared to study hard.

Dr. Breakwell is a very knowledgeable microbiology professor. Your grade is determined based on quizzes and tests alone, but he is very clear about what will be on each. Midterms are not comprehensive and neither are quizzes.

Dr. Breakwell is awesome! He really cares about both the subject and the students. He welcomes comments and questions in class. Be sure to pay attention since the grade is mostly based off of only a few tests and quizzes, but the tests are reasonably easy and Dr. Breakwell also provides multiple extra credit opportunities.

I found the lectures very interesting, especially because he has a cool accent. He has disease quizzes every couple of weeks that kinda suck but the questions are online so as long as you study you're golden. Go to class and TA reviews and you'll ace the class.

I didn't participate as much because I sat in the back. I've had work right before so mostly I just listened and took notes. The lectures a good but sometimes I would miss details that aren't on PowerPoint slides and would make mistakes ok tests. I found the e book informative, but I started relying on it less and less for preparing for tests.

Dr. Breakwell is a good lecturer when it comes to the normal material he teaches. If the schedule says "Diseases of ...," don't bother going that day: the material from the slides aren't the answers to the quizzes, they're very inconsistent. Just review the midterm slides and run through the practice online quizzes a lot and you should get an A.

Dr. Breakwell is straightforward with his tests and quizzes. You can do just fine without the textbook. It's a lecture heavy class, so it's sometimes easy to skip out on. Overall, you can expect to do well if you understand the material from lecture and the TA reviews.

Dr. Breakwell is a wonderful teacher. He has a warm personality and is forgiving. His fair attitude towards students is quite refreshing compared to many other overly strict professors at BYU. I've experienced other microbiology professors at BYU, and they made it almost as hard as a chemistry class. Dr. Breakwell's class though is very doable.

He does teach like you have some background (the chemistry stuff about killed me because I had little chem experience), but if you study and put some effort in, you'll do well on the tests and quizzes. Honestly he's a good teacher. His lectures aren't boring if you decide to pay attention. Go to class and stay updated on what is going on. This class has lots of material and you will be fine if you put the time in for it. I forgot to do a lot of the quizzes so my grade really tanked. Don't forget the quizzes!!

He is a fun lecturer! His slides are pretty much his whole lecture so you can skip class. If you go to the TA reviews you can get an A. He has several awesome TAs who are always ready and willing to help so you can get answers and feedback super quickly. I bought the textbook but didn't find that I needed it for in order to get a good grade.

This class wasn't hard at all. There were a total of five tests that we had to take, but they weren't hard at all. It is pretty easy to get an A in his class without going every time. Fun teacher!

Dr Breakwell is genuinely a great professor. I took this as a senior and have had a lot of prof at BYU and he's one of the best. Study the lecture slides, fill out the study guide and actually study it, MUST GO to TA reviews. There's extra credit. Be smart and do it in the beginning of the semester. He's great. It's possible to do well without coming to class because most of the information is in his slides, but I found the lectures really helpful. The TAs were awesome- go to the test reviews. He gives extra credit- it requires a lot of work but it was worth it. Very possible to pass.

Loved this teacher! If you have a chance, definitely take it from the Salt Lake center. It's a longer class, but he lets you take your tests home and is really great with working with you. Secretly, I think he likes our section better, and he really gets to know you. And he's funny. Definitely recommend him. Would give him a 2.5/5 on difficulty.

Know the Powerpoints and do the study guide and you will be fine. However, the disease quizzes are ridiculous. It's busy work, ridiculous amount of detail time consuming, and 30% of the final. However it is the best general micro class.

Professor Breakwell is one of the greatest professors BYU has to offer. He is hilarious and keeps the class engaged. MMBIO isn't my strong point (not the best test taker) but he makes things clear even for an 8am class. Take this class from him, you won't regret it.

Dr. Breakwell will change your life in regards to the microbial world. You will never flush the toilet without cringing, you will never put your toothbrush by the sink, etc. He is very funny with some very entertaining songs about diseases. TA review are great.

This class is all about microorganisms and their relationship with humans, you'll learn about how microbes cause disease and have to do lots of memorizing for which ones cause which diseases etc. Good class, would recommend even if it's not required for your degree or your grad school. Straight forward, not too difficult and plenty of extra credit.

They way he structures his testing on different diseases is definitely the most difficult part of of his 221 class but its still well done and hes pretty spectacular.

He is great! Took this for nursing requirement. He gives extra credit opportunity, pulls test questions directly from your online quizzes (which you can take till you get 100%), and is funny. Defiantly worth taking it from him. Show up, GO TO TA REVIEWS and you will get an A.

Dr. Breakwell is great, but MMBIO 363 isn't worth taking. It's an easy class and there are interesting topics, but I didn't feel like I got very much out of the class. Overall, Dr. Breakwell is great, but this class may need some adjustments before it's worth taking.

My grade suffered from not coming every day, and he made us buy a $20 app just to take attendance.

He grades you on 4 tests plus a final, and 6 online quizzes that can be taken until you receive 100%. Derek is the TA to go to for help, the professor isn't super great with emails. This is a very easy class. Most of the semester I showed up for the last 20 minutes of class and I had an A going into the final. The tests and material are very basic. However the final was a lot harder than the tests.

I took Life Science 101 from him which is a super easy pass/fail class that explains the majors in the College of Life Sciences. He didn't really teach anything just gave a little intro at the beginning of each class before someone would talk to us about a major we could get. Our grade was just online quizzes on our impressions of the lecturers.

Make sure to go to lectures - he wont post practice case reports on Canvas, and those are important in preparing for tests. Get the extra credit done early in the semester - youll need it. I had Dr. Breakwell for MMBIO 221 taken via the Salt Lake Center. I think he is a phenomenal professor who gives his students tools (unlimited quiz attempts, cheat sheets, variable grading ratios) to be successful in the class. You are able to do as much or as little as you need to get the grade you want, as you are only given credit for exams.

The lab was a lot of fun. Dr. Breakwell is super chill, and he gave us a lot of time to turn things in. The quizzes did require a bit of studying, and attending lecture was important, but he gave a lot of chances to do well in the class.

If you are looking for a class that you can get a guaranteed A/A- this is the one. He gives practice quizzes for each test that are word for word the test (the tests end up taking less than 20 minutes). The final you do have to cram a pretty ridiculous amount of info into a short amount of time but there isn't a question you haven't seen.

I LOVED THE ORGANIZATION OF THIS CLASS!!! I wish all classes were like Dr. Breakwell's! The practice quizzes dont count toward your grade so theyre EXCELLENT study tools with the study guides! And many of the questions are recycled on tests! The few assignments outside of tests are super straight-forward and lectures are interesting and hilarious!!

This class was so much fun!!! You basically get graded on participation in 20 labs which are all super chill. The TA explained everything.! Then the tests were either take home, or exactly the same as the study guide, EVEN THE FINAL! GREAT CLASS!

Dr. Breakwell's class was really easy and chill. There were only 2 midterms (both open note) and no final. The only work I've really put into this class was the 10 page research paper. You could probably pass without ever going to lecture as long as you do the occasional readings. He's really fun and entertaining, so I'd recommend him.

Professor Breakwell is so funny! His lectures are straight-forward too. The only thing I really struggled with was underestimating the exams and I neglected the practice quizzes. IF HE GIVES YOU PRACTICE QUIZZES DO THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE THEM MEMORIZED!! Exams were worth most of my grade. Everything you need for the exams is in the lectures.

The class is honestly super easy, but the last midterm was actually pretty tough for me as it had some Chem 106 stuff that I hadn't taken yet. Don't let that scare you away though. If you just memorize the study guides for the first exams you should get 100. Take 151 from Breakwell!

Dr. Breakwell is great! He's super gracious with grades and does his best to make class entertaining. He's clear about the material on the tests and rightfully so treats 151 like an intro class. This class definitely made me want to continue on in microbiology!

DO THE PRACTICE QUIZZES OVER AND OVER! They are the same as the exam questions. there are no other assignments other than the tests, and even if you do pretty well I would recommend doing the optional ones to get a better grade. Also save your money, textbook not needed, and class helps but if you miss days you'll be just fine.

This is honestly one of my favorite classes I have taken. It is all your own experiments, you bring in your own soil samples). Dr. Breakwell is so funny, he will come in and is always so excited and happy. The TAs run the whole thing but the TAs are so nice and helpful. There are chapter quizzes that you can take unlimited times and notebook checks

Basically the only thing that is graded is exams, but you have seen all the questions before; if you take the practice quizzes. Basically just attend lecture and take the practice quizzes and you will do awesome.

Dr. Breakwell is amazing. This is a super easy class, especially considering that it's 3 credits. Participation and attendance are important, but don't be scared about the 3 hour block. Once you complete all your work, you're able to leave, so it is usually only 1.5 - 2 hours. No exams.

Phage Hunters is the best class ever. Great intro to research. Very easy, maintain your lab notebook and take the 4 quizzes (which have unlimited attempts so basically you're guaranteed 100%) and you'll get 100% in the class. Dr. Breakwell is a great guy and very personable.

Don is very laidback and doesn't require much of you. He understand MMBIO 151 is an introductory class so the concepts aren't terribly hard. Just respect his time and he'll respect yours. One of my favorites!
