Funny, Good, lots of work though

great teacher!he's funny and interesting! memorize his ppt lectures,practice old exams and do well in lab!

HE is one of the best professors I ever had. He makes the material easy to understand and interesting. HE is a very knowledgable man. My hightest recommendations go to this prof. Micro is a very difficult class but he makes it fun and interesting.

Instead of overdetailing us with information to keep us busy, he fixed this class very good to prepare us for our medical profession. He uses the class by pretending for it to be our nursing program to prepare us for what we will deal with. WOrked with us to make it more understandable.

Great teacher! Prepares you for medical line. In the beginning he makes the class look like a living nightmare, but as you try your best, its fun. In the beginning you feel you'll want to drop out but as you stick with it, its fun. Not too detailed. Has an easy approach to help you learn.

I would say he's the easiest going teacher I've ever had. just keep up with the material and all will be well. He gives tons of extra credit and allows lots of extra time to get your labs done. Very easy and fun too! I enjoyed the class! Highly recommended.

this is an easy class...lots of extra credits...interesting lectures..lots of work for the lab part...you'll have fun volunteering for the micro lab though...study his rewrites and you won't have a hard time passing his exams! great teacher, he's cool and funny!

Dr.Hicks has an advanced degree in educational psych as well as his PhD. He presents the same lecture verbally, visually and provides HIS OWN instructor outline for students to follow along. If you study...An "A" will come easy(especially w/ extra credit). Do not confuse lab science with sociology...You can't B.S. an "A" in science. You must study

he is the worst teacher ever!! he gives 200 questions on every exam and you need to write essays too. half of the class dropped. don't take his class

at first, i read this site and got scared. but in reality, yeah you work really hard & your life is basically micro. but, he helps you out A LOT. just ask him questions. 200pt mc, 600pt midterm, lab practicals, a few essays, & a lot of extra credit. he's sarcastic & funny. very knowledgeable. he's intimidating at first, but overall a cool guy.

He was very nice. Even though the lecture is boring, he made it exciting because of his funny jokes and stories. I suggest you take your micro with him. He is very helpful and will do a lot to give you a great grade. He is very organized and considerate!

Dr. Hicks is an inspiration to people who are interested in the subject. Even if you are not interested, you will become, in his class. He overwhelms you with information though, so be prepared to work your ass off and have learned a lot more than you ever expected...Another thing, he is very, very funny and entertaining during lecture!

I think he's a great professor, knows the subject very well. Gives a lot of extra credit points, very helpful to students. CAn be intimidating at first but he's a very nice person and will help you but you really need to work very hard to earn an "A", but i highly recommend this professor.

Lecture is tough and long, labs are fun, teacher is somewhat interesting and funny, available and helpful, tests are LONG 200 questions and essays

BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD! the material is hard wherever you take it but dr. hicks makes class FUN. i never missed a class because i looked forward to his lectures, and i don't even like micro - it's a hard class! he helps you a lot, gives easy extra credit. very approachable. genuinly a great man, and a great teacher.

awesome teacher. safe to say, the best professor i've ever had! he has practice exams on his website that are extremely useful for his tests, especially for the midterms & finals. he's considerate, he's funny & he's so sweet too! he cried when finals were over.

Dr. Hicks is extremely helpful and knowledgable professor. He will make you competent handling any thing in Microbiology laboratory technique. But you have to be willing to put in the effort which include a lot of hard work. When you finish his class, a lot of what you learn will be very useful in your professional career.

Very smart, helpful, exams are a bit lengthy, but gives a lot of extra credit to help you succeed. Has a great sence of humor and lectures are fun and go by fast. Looks like George Lucas!!!

I love Professor Hicks and I will always remember him as one of my most influential teaachers. If you need help, ask him and he will help you because he wants you to succeed. He has a huge personality and is very likeable. You have to study to do well , the exams are multiple choice and there are annoying quizzes, LoVE you HICKS!!

The guy below must have been less than an average student. There is an extreme amount of material he covers but his personality and charisma most of all makes the material easier to understand and makes a potentially boring class, interesting. I had no interest in Micro but this countryboymansir made it fun.

He really knows how to break down the material well. Although I was intimidated by the website and at times, disorganization, he really taught me alot about microbio & made learning it easier. Lectures were entertaining and labs were fun (tedious too). Towards the end, it got pretty fast paced, but there's tons of bonus pts to pick up your grade.

The best Prof. in the world and a great person. I recoment everyone to take him and trust me you won't regret. You will thank him.

He is the best compassionate professor ever. e is honest and never fails to do what he says he will, he is caring and always keeps a positive outlook on everything. In his class i have learnt more about myself and what is going on as far as how taking care of one's health has everything to do with happiness in life. I recommend him for this class!

My personal favorite prof I have ever had. Micro can be very complicated, but Hicks just goes over the basics. Labs are super fun. People that say he is hard just don't finish the class. Even if you are are doing poorly he will work with you and make sure you pass. Believe me, I see him do it all the time ;)

This is the best teacher I've had since attending LACC. He is extremely clear and takes the time to explain any questions you might have. Review the book before class its very helpful.

He's a wonderful and helpful professor. If you do your homework, take notes and stay disciplined, you won't have a problem getting an 'A' in his class. Should you fall behind and don't ask him for help it will become difficult to pass his class.

Keeps the class very interesting and he makes sure you understand. The pace picks up after chapter 2, so you need to stay on your toes. He has a great sense of humor and genuinely cares about your progress.

He is a great professor! He makes sure you really know your stuff and keeps the class interesting. He seems difficult at first but gives you a lot of oppurtunities to help you achieve a high grade... and whoever said he's rating himself is ridiculous! LOL... I wish he was teaching all my classes. Take him and you won't regret it!!

His course is hard and there's a lot of work to do. The tests are based mostly from his notes. There's 200 mult. choice per test. He is tough but he has your best interest at heart. He grades fairly and generously, he knows his stuff and I recommend him just be ready to work!

His class was awesome and helpful but the tests were very tough. There were 200 multiple choice questions per each test and a lot of work. If you have enough time to do work and really want to study microbiology, you should take him.

Microbiology itself is tough, but with Dr. Hicks, prepare yourself. He gives lots and lots of assignment and the tests are tough (200 questions per exam). It feels like two class in one. However, if you do all the things he asks you to do (like the packet) and study hard, you can do it. You will learn so much from this class. He's a great teacher!

the class is hard but not boring. a lot of homework and extra credit from day 1 up to finals. 200 item multiple choice test every 3-4 weeks is hard and very tricky. you will need a good voice recorder, a reliable printer, lots of time to study and kiss ass in order to get an A in this class. don't be surprised if half of the class drops.

A very difficult professor. As he has accomplished a lot of work in the Biology field, he has an earnest interest in teaching his students relative information. He always offers help and will correspond by e-mail for questions. Very difficult, very informative, and very helpful. If you're at the top of your game, you can get an A.

DR. HICKS is by far one of the best professors ever!! Micro is not an easy class, but he sure has his way to make it fun. I enjoyed attending his classes. As long as you follow directions and review the study guides found on his website, you will do extremely well..i love DR. HICKS!!

Professor Hicks really cares about his students and is one of the best professors I've ever taken. Micro isn't easy but he goes out of his way to help students who are actually willing to put in some work. An A won't come easy but it's definitely possible. If you're willing to actually put in a little effort I highly recommend him!

Pros: FUNNY, great stories, very likable, lab is fun, will help w/your final grade if you make the effort Cons: TOO MUCH busy work, 200 multiple choice test, TRICK questions! Do not take his class if you don't want to or can't put in the work. If you do, then a final grade of an A is attainable (even if your overall scores=B)

Dr. Hicks is a wonderful teacher. He's not easy and requires A LOT of work but he loves the subject and his students so he goes out of his way to help you learn. And he makes it fun. Lots of extra credit opportunities for those like myself who need it. Work hard and you will be rewarded.

The professor is a very nice guy however his teaching is disorganized. Check his website, it will give you an indication on how his mind works. He needs to edit edit edit, he managed to confuse most of the class with a subject that does not need to be so confusing. There is also a lack of clarity on the tests and trick questions. WTF!

He gave me an Imcomplete and that alone should be proof that he is a good teacher because he could have gave me an "F". He's an excellent teacher! He tells you that nothing in his class can be "memorized" and that's the truth. TAKE HIM! it will be your best Micro experience.

Why Dr. Hicks is teaching at LACC and not at a school like Berkeley, I don't know. Regardless, he is amazing, difficult yes, I had a nervous breakdown every class, but I passed and got the grade I deserved. More importantly YOU WILL BE PREPARED for your future classes. This class was NOT easy! I had my share of late night mental break downs and I think all the coffee bean employees know me. I finished with an A; but I have never worked so hard for a class and I graduated from UCSD. If you are not prepared to work, don?t waste your time or Dr. Hick?s time. Expects a lot from students since most of us will be in the business of saving lives.University level teaching!Moderately challenging A but VERY FAIR! Dr. Hicks is the best option to take for microbiology. having worked for the CDC, he is clearly well-prepared to teach that class. He is funny. u will laugh in his class. It is hard to get an A but not as hard as people say. one thing is true, his class requires lot of hours from students. just keep up and u will succeed in his class.

Dr. Hicks is smart, disorganized, and funny. When he says he's going to take you to hell and back, he's not kidding. If you want to do well, GO OVER THE DANG PRACTICE EXAMS. (early enough to be able to ask him questions you have about them..because you WILL have questions) Not an easy A, but definitely attainable. Just put in the time.

Def. the person to take micro w/. He is very helpful, gives extra credit, but you do have to work hard for the A. The midterm was a killer, study those cards, they will save you. Website is a MESS! DONT CHEAT! He is very understanding. Knows the material! Study his practice exams.

Excellent teacher. His website is a little confusing, but very helpful and contains all the powerpoints. There is a lot of work in this class but Hicks is a fantastic teacher and keeps it interesting. Ample extra credit opportunities too. If you put in the work, you can get an A or B at least.

talk about top quality. if your looking to gain real knowledge regarding micro, you could not be in better hands. he will shake you up, your brain will be fulfilled. At the end of the semester you will not regret his quality!

He's amazing! Class is very demanding. he's very knowledgeable and will bend over backwards to help you, if you work your butt off! Sarcastic and funny as hell! Class is VERY, EXTREMELY demanding. His website is a mess, but his class is top notch. If I had to do it all over again, HICKS ALL THE WAY. did I mention class is very demanding?

AMAZING PROFESSOR! Dr. Hicks is hilarious, brilliant, compassionate and so darn knowledgeable about microbiology. Yes, his class is demanding but he cares about his students and does everything in his power to help them do well. I feel like my heart is going to explode in my chest everytime I sit down to retype the stupid procedure cards. The workload before the LP1 is managable but the workload before the midterm is just overwhelming. This is mainly because all of the "office clerk work" that you have to do. Good professor but expect to have no life outside of the class.

Be prepared to WORK HARD. This teacher will not hold your hand. He teaches at a University level. If you want to challenge yourself, take his class! If you whine about having to study hard, stay away. He can seem intimidating but he is very helpful and motivating if you put the work in, instead of expecting him to give you all the answers.

He is a truly genuine teacher. I admire Hicks for his passion, intelligence, and zest. One of the greatest teachers! I got an A but I worked my butt off! Take him, you will not regret it. He will prepare you for life and treat you like a college student, not baby you. I will miss him very much!!!!

Great professor! He will put you through hell but as long as you keep focus and do the extra credit (he gives a lot of extra credit) you will get a A or B. I got an A and I had 15 units this semester. You will need to sacrifice your time but that is what college is about. It's a great class and don't miss out on it just because it's tough.

This class requires a lot of time if you are planning to get an A. I work, and have children and got a B in Dr. Hicks class by making time to study. He is helpful and his lectures are very interesting to listen to. His tests are hard only if you don't study from his old test that he provides for you. Taking notes in lecture helps also.

He is the most passionate teacher I have ever had. I wish science was a better subject for me. But he goes through he'll and high water to get you to pass the class. Read all his motes amd DO the extra credit! Not an easy class by any means but he's amazing and I'm so lucky to have had him!

If you plan on taking this class you have to study prior/after class every time. Watch his lecture videos online,print his power points, and prepare to take a test every week and biweekly.Do all the bonus points.Main test are 150-200 questions. The class was hard. He is really funny, entertaining, smart and he does care. However, he is fair.

This professor is going to WORK YOU!!! as in a academic challenge. This class is not for the faint at heart-we had pop quizzes that were 100 questions each. The main test are 200-250 questions each. The highest percentiles on those test for the overall course was 30%. The professor purposely set it that way. Good Luck.! I made IT!!

Hardest and funnest class that I've ever taken! Prof. Hicks knows his subject completely and is always willing to help. You MUST attend class and you MUST do the work! Lots of extra credit is available but slacking will is not tolerated.

He is always there to help students pass the class with extra credit work and has us use Google+ to ask questions & he answers them for all of us to see. Opens labs Saturdays for more help. Don't know any teacher who does that . Got an A, still had a life & I was taking 20+ units with a job. 2 major exams, lots of quizes & final. Tough but fair.

He is the best of the best. LACC should has more teacher like him. He will help you as long as you won't give up. He share his real life experience when he teaches you. Inspirational, hilarious, helpful, amazing, awesome, and fantastic. You will never regret having a teacher like him. He is a star!!

I enjoyed professor hicks so much he made class interesting and fun. I always wanted to go to class and if I wasn't set on my major I would change it to microbiology. His class wasn't easy you definitely have to work for your grade but it was enjoyable. I would strongly recommend taking his class.

Hard class. ALL my free time went to studying. You WILL work for your A. But he gives extra credit, he grades on a curve, gives freebies during exams, posted the whole book online FREE. He breaks everything down, he has agendas every class, he emails you very often with what to do/ expect for next class and he cares so much. He has motivated me and made me fall in love with micro. He is just amazing. He gives many opportunities to get a great grade. Some people are lazy and do the bare minimum and ask classmates to basically do the work for them. Dr. Hicks seriously gives you so many chances. The extra credits are very helpful. The man basically gives all test questions. All you have to do is read notes and book to know answ

I miss Dr. Hicks! I still remember many of the things he though us. His examples are very unique and you will never forget them. I am in my masters degree but once in a while I still peek at his notes because they are on point. He is though and you will not pass the class if you miss it. Also, it is very helpful to enroll in Micro 40.

He is a tough cookie. You need to follow all his rules, save time every weekend to go over all that you learned that week. His class his more than just "what is in the syllabus, it is all that and more. Truly knows his subject well, lectures includes stories, historical aspects that you will not hear with anyone else. TAKE HIM, He is just awesome!

He is funny and teaches you very specifically and even if you don't think he is, he's super approachable so you can email him questions or ask after class. You have to work but you will come out with a thorough understanding of the class. Unlike many other classes, whatever grade you get is really in line with how well you understand the subject.

Prof. Hicks wants you to do well. He is so busy, but will go out of his way for his students. Is available by email, before and after class, office hours and Fridays for Micro 40. Take notes during his lectures, he'll tell you "this is a test question..." I love hearing his stories of his work experience. Pay attention and listen to him.

He is an awesome, funny, genuine and caring person. He wants you to succeed. Ofcourse the content is not as simple, but as long as you study you should do great. He takes the time to explain the material even adds a little humor to it which makes the class interesting. Although he gives extra credit, I recommend you focus more on the tests.

If you are going to take this class, you want to take it with this professor. He has real world experience in his field and when he tells you about his life you'll feel like success isn't some thing for a special kind of person. There is a lot of work but when you're done you'll feel like the smartest person in any room. Also, he's hilarious.

Dr. Hicks is a gem of a human being. He told us the first day that he is the product of many people giving him a second chance. He reassured us that he would be that person for us if we needed. He is very, very difficult and forces you to study and learn the material, but you will not find a more genuine and funny professor. Miss you, Dr. Hicks!

Dr. Hicks is a wonderful teacher and human being! He understands that we are all here to learn and is willing to go out of his way to help. I unfortunately had to leave Cali so I couldnt finish the course, but I would recommend him to anyone who asks! It is obvious that he is the best because he always has a huge waiting list! I have pretty bad ADHD so some concepts were difficult for me to grasp & he never gave up on me, he was always there to help. Don't be afraid to ask. This is a hard class but that's what makes the grade at the end worth it. Dr. Hicks is a once in a lifetime educator. He's brilliant, funny, and he will take the time to work with you to understand. His lectures are fun, I wasn't bored once, he makes it all interesting. Tests were tricky but extra credit was always there to help. He's awesome!

Materials are not easy and the amount of work may be a lot but if you litsen to his lectures and watch videos, you will be fine! He always tries understands and communicates with his students. Great professor!

When he says to trust him, you should trust him. I'm the WORST test taker, practically failed almost every exam. Email him, you can work things out with him. I muscled through it working FT I gave it my all with the other assignments and lab modules that were due and I passed this class with a B. He's a great guy, take him. Lots of work though.

I love Dr. Hicks! He's available/sensitive to your needs but YOU MUST reach out if lost! Micro in general requires a lot of time/effort; don't expect a good grade if you're not putting in the time. Gives a lot of chances and is rooting for you the entire time. Most test questions from PP slides, rest from book/lec. videos on his youtube.

Amazing professor take him!! He truly cares for us! Professor Hicks website was a little unorganized and not easy to get around, but he will explain if you ask. Due to COVID-19 we had to transition to online class and he managed to make it a pleasant experience! There are a lot of biweekly quizzes, labsters and 100 video note taking! Its doable!!

I don't think I have ever worked hard in any of my other classes as much as I did with his class (definitely not easy!). His tests are a killer! I highly highly highly suggest going over the previous tests which are posted on his website. Nonetheless, he is funny, approachable, and will help you as best as he can. Fun class but will kick your butt!

Dr Hicks is a teacher beyond what you'd expect at a CC. He's worked on scientific HISTORY. He deeply cares for his students which shows when they need help and when they disappoint (cheaters beware!). He's someone I'd love to have regular coffees with and listen to him talk about his life. Lucky for me he throws in life stories to teach micro bio.

He has a passion for what he is teaching. Will make sure you know the subject. He is caring but may seem scary. Don't be afraid and ask for help, get a study group. Lots of info to memorize, don't take a hard classes when taking this one, give yourself time to study. Webpage is disorganized but manageable, don't get discourage he will help you.

Prof Hicks is funny, informative and very supportive. Microbiology is a very difficult subject so expect to be stumped but I do have to say that Prof Hicks wanted everyone to succeed and with his first hand experience and storytelling teaching it made the subject a little easier to understand. I suggest reading ahead before lectures!!

Professor Hicks really cares about his students he is always willing to help gives out extra credit a lot so students can improve. Your grade is based on participation, your lab record book make sure you do it and whether you give up or not. He doesnt like Quitters!

If you want to truly learn about microbiology you need to take Hicks. This is not a class for the faint at heart and you will need to dedicate significant time to learn the material. You will come away from the course with significant knowledge. His grading system can be a bit daunting but hang tight and you will do well. Was tough but worth it

This professor is something else, but I have to say that I enjoyed his class. I learned so much about microbiology from Professor Hicks. His exams are 5+ answers but NOT 1 person gets full credit so they get curved. The students who dropped out early should have trusted him when he said he will work with you to pass the class!

His motto is "Dont Give Up and You will Pass"; He understands that the material in the course is difficult, and he works with all his students to ensure that they don't fall behind. He is an entertaining professor and uses as many references as he can to create memorable and teachable moments. This course is extremely unorganized but hang in there!

Though his lack of transparency with canvas and grading was stressful, many people in my class Fall 24 received A's because we did not quit! He highly values attendance. His quizzes are impossible to score well on, but he only counts Exams and Labs! Don't be discouraged by bad quiz scores! You can get an A as long as you stick with it!

It wasn't easy, but tons of extra credit he offers help you easily pass. He gives you 3+ chances on the exams but there's no way you can get above 80% because his wording can be confusing so don't be disencouraged by that. Use the extra credits to boost up. I had a C on canvas grading but still got an A after my lab notes and all the extra points.

His wording can be confusing for most of people, but if you don't give up, he will give you multiple chances to make up. Warm heart, caring, and knowledgeable professor. Sometimes eccentric and might be rude, but deep inside him, he is one of the nicest person in the world. Even if you're confused by what he's saying, don't give up. You will pass.

Imagine the Mad Hatter taught Micro 20. That's this class. Canvas is an absolute nightmare, so are his tests. Follow his course material/videos ONLY and you will succeed. He'll make you feel bad about yourself 1 minute, and try to make you laugh the next. Sensitive? Get another professor. Sweet guy most of the time, but gets snappy.
