This is by far one of the best teachers I ahve had a t COD....You will walk away from each class with a different perspective on life. I really enjoyed this class and highly recomend this teacher to anyone who wants to learn general psych. Attractive too

I agree with the people here, Dr Kates is a very good teacher, he teaches in a great manner and as for the assingment.. no homework.. but quizs and tests.. which you can take in group if you show up to class everytime.. I recomand him to anyone..

Don is a great teacher. He makes sure that you understand and actually KNOW the material.

I have to admit, easy A if u go to every class. take exams in groups. quizzes are hard, and projects, but he gives u time to do it. offers help too. read and pay attention and u should be fine.

If you want to be treated like a college student, this is the guy to take. If you want to be treated like a high school student, stay away. There's no babying in this class. If you work hard, you learn ALOT. Grading is fair, work load limited. You have to think. Highly recommended.

don't listen to those people who gave a negative review. they probably didn't do well. this guy is the best professor I've had at COD. do the work, you get a good grade and learn something also. he make interesting material even better. nice guy too if you take the time to get to know him.

who said he was hot? smart man. knows what hes talking about from his own experience in the field of psych., answers any questions. knows how to keep it fun. first day was intimidating, but he's not the jerk he pretends to be on the first day. good guy.

He was a good teacher. You have to listen and pay attention. Tests are in groups and that makes it easier. He is there for help if you need it. Projects are simple and than there is extra credit.

It takes a while to know if he is jesting or for real, but he is really a very nice and helpful instructor. Classes are never boring. He seems to be very knowledgeable. I am going to look for more of his classes. His tests are hard. You will learn a lot.

He is an excellent teacher and he is very knowledgable. We did some group tests, not much homework only reading. I thought this was a great class.

Student complaints about being unfair are unfounded. With Prof. Kates, you get back what you put into the class. He makes you think on the tests and the reward (knowledge) is worth it. Plus, even those that complained the most on his methods were rewarded with take-home tests, group tests, and 2nd chances for undeserved points. Awesome class.

Very laid back. We had some interesting discussions. He is very knowledgable & straight forward to the point. Read the text and become interested & you'll do fine. He'll do the explaining.

He does not give a lot of homework, few assigments and very easy ones. He says that He is not a teacher, and you can tell because he knows what he is talking about, he practiced for 20 years. Do the reading a assigments and you'll do fine.

You need to work to get an A in his class! His quizzes and exams are hard (final exam is easy, thou). However, he teaches a lot as well (long lecture every class...). He gave us take home tests which was very helpful. Do the extra credit! It helps your grade a lot!! Overall he is a very nice, just not an easy professor.

Good clear teacher. Not alot of homework, but stay on top of reading. Can get A if you study. Interesting class discussions, too.

Easy teacher. Not much homework at all. We had two take home tests and final was easy. Make sure you keep up with the reading and class discussions make class go by faster. If class doesn't participate in discussions he will lecture the whole time and that gets boring really quick.

Good teacher, easy class IF you take notes. Attendance isn't mandatory and he doesn't take attendance, but missing even one class will put you far behind on notes since the class is all lecture. He tends to ramble and sometimes takes a while to get to his point, but a good class overall. Sometimes sarcastic, but means no harm.

Prof. Kates was an amazing teacher.He expects you to not only learn the information he lectures,but be able to apply the concepts,not just memorize your notes.He isn't shy about debating someone's point of view,especially if the student is a moron.People,this is college,lectures happen,notes happen.If you want to learn psychology take Kates' class.

I loved Prof. Kates class. Tests weren't too bad, not a lot of homework and as long as you take notes you'll do pretty good!

Professor Kates is a great teacher. He is very knowledgable about Psychology. It's not the easiest class, but paying attention to lectures and occasional glances at the textbook before th tests will get you an A.

Expect to take upwards of 10 pages of notes per class.If you write down everything he says,study,conceptulize and have the knowledge to apply what you've learned,you will get an A.He knows what he's talking about.Yes,he could be condescending;he doesn't sugar coat anything. If you make stupid comment,he will challenge you to back it up.

those of u who said he was bad are idiots, i'd prefer 2 have him over any one any day group tests on everything I dont even take the group tests & I've never scored below a 90%,open books quizzes(you only have 5 total) 1 homework assignment.Lectures most of class but he's funny & sarcastic but thats the cool part. Easy class, cool content,He ROCKS!

Everyone who said he isn't good obviously wanted their hand held to get a good grade. He challenges and makes sure that you actually KNOW the material instead of reading text and finding answers. Extremely insightful! Loved this class.

Kates is the man! For all whiners about having too much work what do think you would get at a REAL university. He knows his stuff; he has practical experience; and most importantly he expects you to act like an adult (like in a real university). If you want to experience a university level(UofI, Loyola, DePaul, etc) course, take Kates.

AMAZING. I loved him. He actually TEACHES you psychology and has been the most informative teacher I've had at COD. Do not take if you want an easy A- take if you want to learn.

very insightful, people need to realize that they are in the real world now and that not everything is gonna be spoon fed to them. He is sarcastic, but that is what makes him interesting- he is helpful when you ask a question worth asking. Pay attention and you wont have to ask questions that he will make u regret asking.

I loved this class. I understood everything he is a very fun and informative teacher. I thought this class was going to be very hard for me a person that does not like to read or do so much work. But I loved it and I am not sure yet but I think I got a good grade. Thanks alot. Mr. Kates.

You simply can't find a better professor. He's very knowledgable in psychology and explains things with multiple details from different perspectives so that the student can see that there is more than one way to think about a problem in psychology. He is also very fair and has a good sense of humor.

Mr. Kates...well, he seemed kind of mean at first...but he turned out to be a VERY good teacher. He knows his stuff. It's not a HARD class if you're willing to TRY. Love the Harley in him!

very cool guy, but definitely is not the easiest teacher i've ever had. he treats you as an adult, he won't hold your hand through the class. his tests are very hard, but let's you take them as a group as long as you have perfect attendence. he is very helpful and will help you when you ask. great teacher, knows psych incredibly well. great teache

He tells you in the beginning that he has no time for immature students, which is good I think. Tells you how it is, what you need to know, makes sure its clear to all. And I'm also a Harley Davidson fan like him!

Wow, you have to go to class? You have to take notes? The tests make you think? Thats not what I went to college for. He makes you think, the test material is all in the notes (which you can frequently use) and he doesn't let the screw offs disrupt the class for the people who actually came there to learn something. I wish he taught other classes.

very good teacher, very intelligent and smart. he helps a lot. he requires attendance and participation. 3 tests+1 comprehensive, 5 quizzes and 1 easy project. tests are hard but if u do reading, u'll be fine.

I?m 40+ year old, DePaul teacher, thinking of switch to Psych. My take: -Can seem "arrogant" +Knows and explains material very well +Great sense of humor +Great book. Easy read. Up-to-date +Easy material, IF YOU READ AHEAD OF TIME +Easy exams I give him an A. Would be an A+, but needs vacation first! ;) I want my kids to take his class! ;)

Dr. Kates is an excellent professor. His brand of humor is pretty comical too. He lets you take exams in groups, which is really nice. You need to take a lot of notes on the lecture and the book! If you don't, you'll probably fail the class. Just a heads up. Take notes. Read the book.

This guy knows Psychology! He can lecture without any notes for hours and makes it interesting. Do NOT skip any classes. Missing even ONE will put you behind. Is he arrogant? I don't think so. He knows his stuff so don't make stupid comments especially if you're clueless. No HW. Group tests, a little on the hard side. TAKE NOTES and you'll be fine.

This guy was amazing!!! He taught the material in a way that was easy to understand and memorable, he had these stories from when he worked in the field that would get and hold your attention. Funny guy too! The group tests were really helpful and though there were a lot of questions the material was basic just make sure you have a good group!!!

Best teacher in pysch department Highly recommend Kates, he's so funny and he doesn't even know it.. Really nice guy he should be teaching at a way higher level. I didn't buy a book and relied solely on lecture and got an A. He knows his stuff and understands how to teach students. Don't miss a class his lectures are extremely informative

I took the online class and there was a lot of reading because there were no lectures, but overall it was a breeze. There were no due dates until the end of the semester which was nice to be able to work at my own pace. Was always available over email too! Overall, good teacher.

Gives an unfair amount of extra credit. Group Tests, 1 assignment, open note tests, open book quizzes. Great class, even better professor. The extra credit alone can can improve your grade by full letters.

Prof. Kates knows his stuff and is a GREAT lecturer but his class is not a learning friendly environment. He could be one of my favorite professors ever if he were just a nicer guy. He is on a bit of a power trip and tries to intimidate his students. His sense of humor is always at someone's expense and that just doesn't belong in higher learning.

Offers tons of extra credit; no reason you can't get an A in his class. IF you have perfect attendance, he'll let you take your exams in a group of 4 & lets you use your notes. All quizzes are open book. I enjoyed his class very much. Kinda cute in his own way.

Show up to class and take notes. Tests and quizzes are open note. Some were take-home or through blackboard. LOTS of extra credit and only 1 assignment. Not the easiest class but if you show up and take notes and do the extra credit you'll be fine!

Mr. Donald Kates is a wonderful teacher. Though he expects you to read the book, most of the work is done in the class. Though you read the chapters he assigns for the particular week for classes. He does clarify everything in the book. Gives lots of excredit and though the tests are long they are on the comprehension of what youvelearned.Have fun!

He is very strict with his syllabus; however, he gives enough extra credit and group tests that you have to be extremely detached from learning not to do well. He sort of lacks a respect for his class as a group in that he says "you people" and "folks like you" but he does so rather playfully. Kates online class is (I hear) much harder than his in-person class, where he offers group tests and take home exams- Knows his stuff

Kates is a great teacher he is very easy to learn. He makes Psychology fun and interesting always an upbeat attitude. I love being in his class, you do have to pay attention to his lectures and make sure you take notes. Because he lets you use them on the exams. Hes very laid back I really like him.

Extremely knowledgeable & helpful. If you have any questions he is more than available to help you. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend highly on going (he will too). Dr. Kates was a clinical researcher for 30 years- his lectures enlighten far beyond the text and his lectures are mentally engaging. He gives people every opportunity to succeed. (Teaches the memory chapter early to help your study habits, lots of extra credit,online portion of textbook to quiz yourself, open note/group tests.) He's great.

Took his online course. Quiz on every chapter, 4 Unit Exams, 4 Big Assignments, and Final Exam. Basically, you are teaching yourself in an online course. If you do not have time management skills or are not a self-disciplined student, you will not do well in this online course. But overall, pretty simple stuff if you study and do work every week.

Best professor I ever had. Best class experience overall. Dr. Kates has tremendous knowledge in Psychology because he actually has experience working as a psychologist. His class truly felt like a seminar. By the end of the class, I got a whopping A. I highly recommend him! Take this guy.

Professor Kates was one of my favorite teachers throughout my two year COD career. He is very down to earth and always open to questions/discussions. There was no homework just 4 exams, a few quizzes and a final. If you come to class and take notes during his lectures then you will def pass. I highly recommend this class and professor!

Dr. Kates is a great teacher who explains concepts well and is open to questions. He is welcoming to every student's ideas and encourages that they help make the class flavorful by sharing them with the class. He is down-to-earth, kind, and approachable during break time.

Great teacher. Although you never know what the exams are going to be like because he doesn't give you an outline. But the quizes are much like the exams. No homework either and also provides a TON of extra credit online which brought my grade up from a C to an A!

Took this class a couple years ago. Seriously this class changed my life. Not only did I get an A in this class I've gotten A's in every single class I've taken since. Such an awesome guy. If you are stuck-up and not humble at all, then yes he will pi$$ you off. Does not directly answer your ?'s but will talk around it until you realize the answer.

He is one of the best professors at College of Dupage. He keeps you engaged while taking notes. The tests are hard but are open note and with groups if u have perfect attendance. there are 7 10 point extra credit quizzes he gets so getting an A is easy. Going into the final i needed a 69 or above to get an A.

Not sure what the other students who took him and bombed him were expecting. He's a straight shooter, so maybe that's what scared them off. You need to put effort into the class to get what you need. Take notes and attend and you'll do fine. Group tests were done, and he also gave take home quizzes if he ran late with his lectures.

He's a very straight forward guy and explains the material very well. Good Extra Credit, quizzes and exams are easily understood and the course is super interesting.

One of the most interesting Psychology Professors I have taken. I wish I had the opportunity to take more courses from Prof. Kates. His lectures involving Neuro-Psychology are absolutely amazing. He really made me realize that I truly wanted to major in Psychology.

Dr. Kates class was one of my favorite classes that I've taken. He has an extensive background in the clinical side of psychology and really helps you understand some tough concepts. He is very relaxed and easy going. His lectures are interesting and keep you engaged (which is rare these days). Highly recommend him!

He's really funny! He let us work together in groups for tests. There is almost no homework but it's always a good idea to read the book. We rarely used the book in class but it was expected that we read it outside of class.
