His lectures are not helpfull.

Most boring teacher ever. Bring your discman to class so you stay awake.
He's really boring...he always sounds like he's reading from a term paper.

He KNOWS the topic well, but he puts me to sleep...

Knowledgable of material, but seems bored with teaching it. Use the TA for help.
So Boring.
has monotonous voice, very boring....tests are short answers
Most boring class of all time. Plus at 8 in the morning? Shoot me now
AWFUL!!!! Never take thsi class, your better off just learning from teh book.
donald katzner sports his pastel button up shirts every morning, maybe they are used to contrast with his bleak personality. BORING AS HELL. the guy know's what he is talking about but he couldn't teach a dog how to bark. as seen in Case and Fair
Very hard class. It made my freshman year here suck. He gave 4 and 6 question tests. Definately seek your TA for help!
He knows the material, he just can't teach it. He teaches it best when he applies the material to real-life situations... but does so VERY rarely. His short-answer tests are deathtraps. If you want to take Micro choose another prof.
He's really intellegent and dedicated but NEVER, EVER take the MAKE UP EXAMS it's so hard he won't let you get it back! my grade went down so much because of it! TA's are nice and very helpful!
Ever seen Ben Stein? (Clear Eyes, Win Ben Steins Money, Wonder Years, etc) WELL THIS GUY IS A CARBON COPY OF HIM!!! although he is very smart, he is the most boring and unhelpful teacher I have ever had, not worth going to lectures, go to discussions!
I love micro now.So lucky to learn it from a giant of the field.
Prof. Katzner is a really smart guy. He is really accomadating to students. He knows his stuff but can be alittle dry during lectures. The exams are pretty straightforward. The reading is very easy you just have to keep up with it. This was a tough class to take at 8AM, but I would recommend him.
one of the best professors at umass and an authority in microeconomics. take his class and you won't regret it
great class, great prof
Katz is the man!!!
the best
I love microeconomics. Did a very good job of covering everything, especially consumer theory and theory of the firm.
very good professor
Definately a good teacher, seems like a good guy. Isn't hard or easy. Just listen go to class and take notes. Thats really it
the course is difficult if you do not understand economic graphs. Know and understand economic graphs that is what will save you.
Katzneer is a really laid back guy. His lecutres aren't the most interesting mainly b/c the material is kind of difficult, HOWEVER, he only gives 3 tests and they really aren't bad. He's a nice guy and very fair and flexible if you have a conflict with tests.
The Professor just rambles on and on and on, making the class incredibly hard to sit through. Unless you want your grade based on 3 tests, don't take this class.
Very boring class, TA's are unhelpful. Prof just rambles on in class and doesn't do anything to help engage the rest of the class. The nice thing is that the class is so basic that you can learn everything from the book.
The Class was very boring and the T.A. s were unhelpful mainly because they didn't know english!!!
In general, the class was BORING! In order to follow him and what his saying, you have to understand his graphs...which for me was not easy to follow at 8 in the morning. His TA's are worse than him. They know absolutely no english and some have not even been in America for more than 5 months.
One of the worst teachers at Umass. Very unclear, tests are very tricky, for my class, the average test grades were in the 40's. Terrible
this professor may be one of the most boring on campus. i could barely stay awake for his 8am lecutures all semester. his midterm was wicked easy and then the second was insanely hard, read the book and go to discussion are top priorities.
Katzner is a very good professor...I just wish that classes weren't at 8:00 in the morning. The concepts are hard but my TA was extremely helpful. Read the book, pay attention in class, go to discussions and you shoulld be able to do extremely well.
Not a bad class. He is very monotone and his voice puts you to sleep, but his tests are pretty easy, they only cover main concepts. It was a huge class so you can't really rank him on helpfulness. No homework 2 midterms, 1 final. Just make sure you keep up with the material. I didnt go to about half of the classes, i took notes myself and got an A-
this man is really boring. seems like a nice guy but really boring. boring. boring. boring. i can't stress enough how boring he is. oh and when i took it, the midterm average of the class was 49. my advice: find someone else for 203 if you want an easy grade
No Comments
Donald Katzner looks exactly like ben stein except he's probably more boring. His classes suck but if you understand the material he covered in the book theres no point in going to class because youll get an a.
he is ok, the class is kind boring
3 points off your final grade for each missed class yet all he does is read (awkwardly) straight from the book. Unbelievably boring. GREAT T.A.!
Econ 177 is a great class to take for any major, especially if you need a global requirement. The exams are very straightforward and the material is very interesting!
NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH KATZNER!!! His sources are outdated, and he basis his cultural comparison on stereotypes; there was no comparison of economics involved. Our TA spent many discussion periods telling us Katzner is full of****. Attendence WILL affect your grade. He's an old dick and his class is useless. DO NOT TAKE A KATZNER CLASS.
decent prof. very knowledgeable on micro-econ. has published a good amount of books on the topic. although his lectures can be pretty boring and hes monotone discussion sections will help you. tests are pretty hard. but not a bad course all an all
Gives confusing notes but review sessions and discussion sections helpful.
Pretty boring lectures......sometimes he will cover things not in the book. Definitely go to discussion section!!! The T.A was very helpful in my class. Tests were tricky and was the only thing that counted toward your grade. If you use the Test Review Sheets that he gives you and teach yourself some of the material you will do fine.
I had him for 397J and 203 and i'll agree the lectures can get pretty boring. However he's definitely an approachable guy and will help you if you go to him for assistance. The discussions and review sessions are crucial since some of he material can be hard to understand.
Incredibly boring. Class is pretty interesting, though some of his "facts" are outdated.
Boring, have to go to class, random facts, stupid tests. Came together at the end.
One of the most boring and unclear professors I have ever had in my college career. Do not recommend taking his class. I major in Economics and have a strong grasp of the subject matter but this class has still been extremely difficult.
This man is atrocious. His lecture is not clear, he is borderline incomprehensible, he uses confusing terminology for already confusing material, he doesn't use the book much, Only Three tests that make up your whole grade and nothing else, his tests are tricky and hard as well, be prepared for a 5 question test too. He is not good at all
This guy is one of the worst teachers I've had, he just rambles on about stuff and doesn't use power point or anything just writes on the chalkboard. I would not take 204 with him at all. STAY AWAY
The absolute worst class i have taken at umass. The material is already hard and this prof does nothing to make this any easier. Its outrageously boring and it doesnt help that he writes on the chalk board with writing impossible to read. If you can, stay away from taking this class with him. Its horrible to say the least...
Very HARD CLASS. It won't help not to go to class, as many people did and ended up failing. Gets boring, but Katzner helps you understand, as well as the TAs. If you score decently on the exams, it comes in your favor at the end of the semester.
He did well teaching such a dry subject. It was all theoretical stuff done out in front of us on the chalkboard. Confusing and sometimes difficult to grasp the material but he was experienced enough to know when a concept was difficult. He is willing to explain things multiple times and will try to phrase things differently to help you understand.
So unclear
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Writes in chalk and is very unclear. Uninspired teaching and is constantly talking into the chalkboard. The class averaged less than a 50 so it feels like you're not learning anything at all. A waste of a class.
Tests were hard as well as the 4 quizzes. The strategy, if you want to do well or at least decent enough where the scale comes to your favor is do every single practice quiz questions and go over each problem set because Katzner takes stuff off from those problems and puts them on the exams. Worst class I've ever taken in my UMass undergrad career.
Study the problem sets and the quiz questions if you want to do well in his exams! He scales at the end, avg was around a 50. I highly recommend getting the textbook when things gets confusing. Though, he talks about some things in class that is not in the book. If you do all those things you should have no problem getting a decent grade.
He is one of the smartest professors i have ever had. If you need help with the class you should go directly to him or your TAs, they are very helpful too. His class is not easy at all, but if you do all the study guides question then you will have no problem. I dont recommend missing his classes, ever!
He's a smart professor but the thing is he is very picky when grading quizzes & tests. If it's not in his exact words,he takes off points even though you have the main concept down. The only good thing is he scales test, so an 80 was an A. He also makes some of the material seem harder than it is. Takes a lot of hard work if you want a good grade.
Prides himself on his intelligence and refuses to cater to the student's learning development. Makes material harder than it should be. Rarely stops teaching to make sure students understand what is going on, when he does it's in the form of asking "Any questions?" rather than breaking down the material on a more comprehensible level.
Not a good teacher. He thinks he does a great job teaching but he does not explain it. He just states what it is. Does not let TA's go over quiz review questions until after the quiz so you are on your own. If you do not use his words, you get no points even if you say what he said in your own words.
He is one of those great professors. His lectures are very clear and straight forward. This class needs hard work to keep up. But as long as you read the textbook and pay attention to class, it would be a great and very interesting class.
Not helpful, and very confusing. The material he teaches you he doesn't explain how to answer the questions and you won't gain credit unless you write exactly how he wants it although you may have the answer correct in your own words. Get a different teacher.
The class is boring and confusing, but you have to go to know anything about what's going on for the quizzes and exams. The TAs hardly ever clarified points of confusion and look for exact answers when grading. This class requires a lot of work for a decent grade. But, the exams are scaled which makes the class a little better.
Katzner's a smart professor with a lot of knowledge, but can't convey that information effectively. He speaks quickly, rarely writes on the chalkboard, and doesn't provide anything outside lecture that reinforces the material. No power points for the class, and few notes on the course site. Quizzes and exams are hard. Go to class or you'll fail.
Im the type of student that goes 110% on everything. This professor speaks in advanced terminology that none of this sophomore not junior students can keep up with. When asked to clarify, he just repeats the same garble and looks at the student as if they're the problem.
No doubt, this class is one of the hardest classes that every Econ major has to take. Professor Katzner moves through difficult material quickly and it is often hard to keep up. The exams are pretty difficult so expect the class average to be very low. Study hard, but you'll probably still fail.
Katzner is definitely old fashioned, but his class was straight forward. He even posts all possible exam/quiz questions. Go to class, read the book, know study questions...what's so hard about that for everyone? Katzner might seem aloof but during office hours he is very helpful.
WORST professor ever. Avoid at all costs
You cannot skip class EVER and expect a good grade. Everything he says is important. He's super straightforward and explains the material best of any econ professor I've had here. TAs are the most important part. My TA made sure if we showed up to discussion we'd get an A on every quiz. I'd definitely take another class with Katzner.
Easily the most challenging class that Econ majors have to take. I would say try to avoid this class but Katzner is always the one teaching it and its required to pass so goodluck...
Katzner himself is a really good guy. If you go to him directly for help, he will go above & beyond to make sure you understand. This said, this was still the hardest course I've ever taken. His lectures are difficult to follow; I relied on my TA and discussion sections in order to pass. Requirement for my major, otherwise would not take again.
Lectures are set up so that it is easy to take notes, but you will have no idea what Katzner is talking about if you didn't read beforehand. The study questions and problems are tough, but if you work your way through most of them you should do fine in the class. The TA section is helpful for the sets. Be as specific as possible on exams and quizzes
THE WORST professor at UMass. Avoid Katzner at all costs. Terrible person and an even worse instructor. His lectures are unintelligible and he expects you to learn everything from the textbook. If I wanted to learn from books, I would not have enrolled in college. Assignments are tough and his grading is completely unfair. Do not take this class.
This is definitely a hard class but not impossible. He puts all the questions online, but there are like 200 of them so it's impossible to memorize all the answers. It is super important to go through all the questions before exams. Final worth 50% of your grade. I didn't use the textbook very much, mostly class notes.
This man's course is considered the hardest class an econ major has to take, and boy is it hard. Others are two exMs and a handful of quizzes upon which your whole grade is dependent. Attendance is absolutely 100% mandatory; do not skip a single lecture. Final exam is cumulative so start studying early. Katzner is very old-fashioned and very smart.
Katzner is a pretty good professor. Everything is theory based. I just payed attention to the lectures and never bought the book. My TA did a good job on going more in depth to help explain the concepts. I don't think this class is very hard, but the final exam is graded very strictly so it's very difficult to get full credit. Do well on the quizes
Katzner is clearly a very smart man, however he has an older style of teaching that is extremely inaccessible for students. The whole class is theory based, and its pretty much an hour or so of him whizzing across the black board, deriving different equations and graphs and not fully explaining how he got them or what their significance is.
A great professor, very clear and easy to follow. The book helped but was not used very often. I didn't do much homework and passed with a B.
This class really isn't that hard. Make sure you do well on your 4 quizes because those will really help your grade. I never bought the book and did well. It's also important to know the equations that go with each graph. The two exams aren't hard, but they are graded very tough. Make sure you label everything and go to class!
No homework assigned, do the study questions/problem sets posted online (there are an absurd amount) or prepare to get what appears to be a failing grade. Scaling is absurd, a 30 on the midterm was a C- . Still mid-semester so unsure of final scaling. Archaic teaching style, theories' real world relevance is never mentioned. ECON WEEDER COURSE
Katzner is a great professor and a smart guy, but has a very old style of teaching. He doesn't give homework, projects, papers, etc. There are four quizzes worth 100 points , a mid term worth 100, and a final worth 200 points. I got a 40 on the mid term and that counted as a C. Don't take this class if you plan on skipping and missing lecture
Katzner is a smart guy and a good professor but the course material is difficult to understand. There are 4 quizzes and a midterm and final. Attending lecture and discussion is necessary to pass. One of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. I have never studied so much for an exam as I did for the final. But all the material is given to you.
He's an incredible guy, however his teaching is quite old-school and I find it be be fairly inaccessible for students who are not "traditional" learners. With only four quizzes and two exams it makes it difficult to get a good grade in this course when these are the main things determining your grade.
This is the worst class at UMass Amherst. His teaching is impossibly confusing. If you zone out for 20 seconds you'll be lost for the rest of the class. I stopped going after the first exam because it was unbearable. He is an incredibly smart dude that could not care less if you learn anything or have any idea what he's talking about.
Katzner is a smart guy, but his teaching style is archaic and he is awful at explaining the material. He makes every definition and theory seem more complicated than they actually are, and the course is extremely back heavy, with the final being worth 50% of your final grade. Do not take a class with him.
It is impossible to pay attention in lecture and the tests and quizzes are incredibly hard. Only thing that would help is a new professor and grading/teaching style altogether. Sorry to everyone who has to take this but good luck!
Econ 203 is a notoriously difficult class. However, Katzner makes it as clear cut as possible. He provides all the questions that will be on quizzes and Exams. He tends to explain material in terms of calculus which can get boring if your not interested by mathematics. If you attend discussion section, listen during lecture, study you can do well.
All the questions for the quizzes and exams are given to you from day 1 but its impractical to memorize everything. lectures are very stale and i stopped going after exam 1. I would say your ta is the most helpful person for this course. would highly avoid this class if possible because you're gonna have a longgg semester
Katzner teaches as if he's talking to a class full of students who know everything about economics. 4 quizzes, a midterm and a final, with the final being 50% of your grade. He gives all of the questions which will appear on the quizzes and the exams at the beginning itself. Only the TAs are helpful as they go over the questions and help understand
Professor Katzner is very old school. When class starts he gets going and you better be sitting up front because he does not talk loud and does not use a microphone. If you can survive a couple weeks you can make it. Take very good notes and expect things to make sense when your TA explains it all. He knows micro econ very well.
This is probably the hardest class in the department. In order to succeed, you almost need to attend office hours bc that's the only way to get clear cut answers to the study questions for the quizzes. There isn't any HW but there are 4 quizzes which are crucial down the road towards your grade. Tests are tough but if you study hard, you'll do well
Although this is probably the hardest class in the department, Prof. Katzner really strives to teach his students the material. He's a tough grader, but he's willing to answer any question and always hosts office hours. I'd recommend his class if you're willing to put in the time, but it will take a decent amount of time.
If you are a person who can't retain anything in lecture (especially with no powerpoints) then you should not take this class. Teaching yourself is impossible. I tried to go to lecture and teach myself but it didn't work. I went to discussion and just listened as people were talking about things I didn't know. Don't take this class.
This is the only class that I have ever taken where I feel like the professor wants you to fail. 4 quizzes worth 25 percent. Midterm worth 25 percent. Final worth 50 percent. That's it. Katzner thinks he is a great guy for giving you the questions beforehand but there are over 200 questions for an exam with 7 questions on it. Don't take this class.
Very old school and his teaching is difficult to understand and is quite dry. He takes fairly simple, intuitive concepts and makes them incredibly confusing.
If you dont need this class drop it now, but some majors have it as a requirement. Katzner is a super smart guy and I know hes doing his own thing, but the final is worth 50% of your grade and the midterm is worth 25%. There are no slides provided, he speaks extremely low, and this is easily the worst class here! Good luck, you will need it.
Agree with guy below me, I have no idea how I'm supposed to study for these tests. just a weird class format
Show up to class and take notes. Go to the TA as much as you can before the test and you got yourself and A. (get ozzie as your TA)
Awful Professor, if you can take this class with literally anyone else, do it. Very boring classes. If you are currently taking the class, or you don't have a choice in professor. Look at CourseHero for the study question answers. They will be in multiple class folders, but all are possible to find.
Google "Umass econ 203" website before committing to this course. For a 82 year-old to be dedicated to teaching is something we need to take a second to acknowledge. Finals is 50% of your grade so focus on other courses until 2 weeks before finals BUT if you bomb this final... Note: Solve ALL study questions before each test.
Katzner seems like a great guy but not a good prof. Hes not enthusiastic about teaching at all and doesn't seem to be accessible for questions outside class. The reason I passed the class was because of my good TA. Also writes his notes in cursive by hand and refuses to change them so its hard to follow along. Sorry but wouldnt recommend for 203.
This professor seems like a very nice genuine guy, just not so sure about his teaching style. He is willing to help you understand the material which is very challenging, but TA's are helpful resources.
Two exams make up 75% of the grade. You can't read anything he writes and he is not fun to listen to. These questions on the study questions are ridiculous and he makes easy Economics concepts way harder than they need to be.
Donald Katzner is a very bad professor. His lectures were boring, his handwriting is illegible, and he contributed nothing towards my learning. Here is how you do well in this class: - Go to discussion sections - Go to your TA office hours - Don't go to lectures. Only use the lecture recordings to answer some study questions - Use the textbook
Professor Katzner is intelligent, but does not speak in a way that makes sense to an average student. Definition of a boomer. Don't attend lectures because you get nothing out of it, he writes in cursive on a chalk board and does not use proper slides. Your TA discussion session will be what saves you. DON'T TAKE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO.
Your entire grade is 4 25 point quizzes, 1 100 point midterm, and 1 200 point final for a total of 400 points. His lectures are unnecessarily unclear and he makes simple concepts unbelievably complicated. The TAs will save you though, I had the greatest TA of all time and he thought the material much better, take advantage of that section.
He is really bad at lecturing and is very boring. Reads his lecture notes in class that makes no sense (posted on moodle) and writes everything on the board but is very bad at explaining so it's the same as just reading the PDF. Class is graded only on 5 quizzes (30%) and 2 exams (70%). The TA saves your life though so go to the discussion.
Nice guy but nobody goes to the lectures because they are useless. Go to your TA, learn what they teach you and you will get an A. Also don't buy the expensive textbook because you don't need it. Quizzes and tests are all based on questions he gives in prep material. Prof practically does not run or teach the course.
Awful. Useless lectures and way over complication of what you need from the material. Never skip a TA session and use the study guides, pray on the final (it's 50% of the final grade and can be any material from the semester).
Way too difficult, no one should go through the pain of this class.
This class is way too difficult no one should waste their time on this.
I never Attended his lectures. Thank God it was not mandatory because I could feel my brain cell disintegrate in his class. He is very respected in his field but that doesn't excuse his inability to impart knowledge. Due to his age, his speech is unclear and thoughts are cluttered as well. Not to mention, his syllabus and contents is endless.
He had a brief stint where he was dying and held lectures on zoom. The TAs will really help, but the grade distribution isn't good.
Class is overly difficult, textbooks are useless. 75% of your grade is the midterm and final, and every question is open response, no extra credit. Would not take.
Students should know that his lectures are very difficult to understand, his writing is small, and frequently the concepts are unclear. TA sessions are beneficial, and it often feels like the professor and the TA's are teaching entirely different subjects. Overall, many concepts feel still abstract. Class makes me regret slightly majoring in Econ.
Very Honest, take another Microecon class if you can. Grade is based on 400 total points between quiz midterm and final. Had a month of in-person classes and zoomed in the rest of the year. Has taught the same lecture for so long he has all of his lecture notes memorized. Go to TA sessions they help a lot. This course was my final straw to transfer
This class has actually made me want to cry so many times. This is the most difficult course of the economics major. He NEEDS to retire, he cannot teach at all.
Save yourself. Bane of my existence.
I wish I could write good things about this class but I can't. This will probably be one of the most hard if not the hardest econ class you have to take as an econ major. The quizzes and exams are weighted ridiculously, you better hope and pray you end up with a good TA.
The lectures themselves are useless. Visit the discussions and TA hours instead. The overall structure is also messed up. No homework, just quizzes, midterm and a final that is 50% of the grade.
Low ratings are def made by people who didn't make any effort. The final grade is completely based on quizzes and exams, but all of the quiz/exam content comes directly from study guides/homework, whose questions are answered in lectures. In my opinion, this was the most rewarding class I have taken to date at UMass, would recommend to anybody.
This is legitimately the hardest class I've ever taken. All TA heavy, if you have a bad TA you can basically kiss your grade goodbye. There are 4 quizzes, and two exams all graded all out of a different amount of points and a heavy curve applied at the end. Avoid this class if you can.
This class is no easy feat - it's a real challenge. But with the right study tools like unstuck AI, as well as engaging with the TAs, you can manage. Attend class, read the textbook, and stay on top of the high-stakes exams.
Bane of my existence, my TA got me through this class. I've never spent more time studying for any other class. The averages for the tests which are 75% of the grade averaged 61 and 57 uncurved.
ECON203 grades are all based on performance (quizzes, exams). Following what the professor suggests (do problem sets after each week, prep study questions). Raymond was my TA and he is amazing, make sure to go to office hours if you need help. I would say this class is challenging but if you put in effort, you will get a good grade.
didn't even bother showing up to lecture due to his already god awful ratings. he doesn't use a mic or projector in a 250 person lecture hall so I pretty much had to teach myself everything in the course. Wasn't bad but having a competent professor would've been nice. Glad he's finally retired good riddance
Overall, Donald is a good lecturer, you can tell he has structured the course very well and has all the resources you need on canvas. If you go to the lectures and keep up with the problem sets you should be fine. The only annoying thing is the exams are a lot of your grade and there's a lot to remember especially for the final which is cumulative.
