This guy tires to help but in reality it just makes me even more nervous since he keep walking back and forth during lectures. Sometimes he tries to be funny but it does not really work. Try taking someone else.
He is the weirdest teacher ever! He talks to himself and flips pens or chalk in his hands before lecturing. He doesn't seem very approachable, but he is. His tests are very doable, but if you don't study everything, then you're f**ked.
Not hard at all. His tests are very straightforward, as long as you study and come to class (some people still have trouble with this - hence low ratings). Super helpful, has tons of office hours, and is very easygoing. HIGHLY recommended.
The first day I met him I was terrified. He wears all black and has an insane photographic memory. He scares you, but if you take notes in the book and do all the problems his tests are really easy. He is actually a nice guy and he is really entertaining.
The best teacher I ever had in Loyola so far. Yes, he's a little eccentric but he's hilarious. He's a little intimidating and hard to approach. But once you approach him, he's a very cool guy. He lectures very well and the tests are doable and fair.
very clear, very fair tests. if you pay attention and take good notes, that alone will help you on the tests. class material = test material. he doesn't pull stunts on tests, very straightforward. orgo isn't an easy class, so dont expect it to be cake either!
He is amazing! I would take him every year if I could. Kind of intimidating because he is really really smart, but he is a really nice man. His class is very entertaining and its always fun to see if he is going to wear black, which he usually does. But hey why mess with a good thing. I definitely recommend him.
hes pretty good. id take another semester with him. explains really well and very helpful. entertaining to watch i must say.
He's hilarious! His tests are pretty difficult, unless you absolutely study your butt off for them. He's full of random useless knowledge that he throws in every now and then to keep the class awake. He presented the material much more clear than the book did. If you ask him for help, hope you catch him in a good mood or else he can be pretty rude!

May is awesome... all you need to do is go to class and memorize his notes!!!

One of my 2 fave teachers. I recommend him to everyone. I would take him for every class if I could. Explains things very very well. Doesnt take attendace but it is for your benefit to go to class. Tests are easy if you study the notes in his class. He's really funny.I loved going to his class. TAKE HIM. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. BEST PROFESSOR.
will scare the heck out of you at first but later on, becomes a real cool guy......... plus, he's friggin hilarious, in a dark way though
One thing I really liked about Dr. May is that he gives lots of examples and is constantly reviewing concepts.
definitely take. best orgo professor at loyola
he's the best teacher at LOYOLA, he seems hard at first but when u get his way of thinking&testing it will b easier.have 2 go 2 class for a good grade.he is funny&has a cute personality.exams are'nt easy but are not impossible. he has a very kind&tender heart,u will see that later on in the semester,he just wants his students 2 do well & know a lot
He doesn't know anything, but at least he tries to help.
He's a nice man, but it's WAY cheaper to take the same class with him at Harper. www.harper.edu (he teaches there too)
Dr. May is awesome, he will make organic chem seem easy when he teaches it. You gotta study, and although his tests are hard, if you go through his notes, u will be fine. Awesome guy, really helpful, and one of the BEST profs ive ever had. Take him over ANYONE else. Also... he always wears black, which is quite funny lol
May is an excellent teacher, but his tests are long and hard! Like 50% of my class failed. If you ask him questions, he is really good at explaining things.
he was amazing....seriously he knows what he is doing and wants you to do well.... if you go to class and take good notes you will do really well, i dont know what those people are talking about....maybe they didn't go to class.
Dr. May is my favorite professor at Loyola. I felt that his tests were extremely fair. If you review the notes on a semi-daily basis and make flashcards for the formulas and mechanisms you will do good. The grading scale is entirely based on a curve (i.e. 20 points above the average is the lowest A, 10 points about the average is the lowest B).
best orgo teacher ever. study hard and know your material exams are very hard, but with lots of studying youll be fine
this prof is awesome. exams are long and hard but if you have good study skills you should be well off
great orgo teacher.. you really have to study A LOT if you want a good grade with any teacher b/c material is very difficult.. he explains things very well and if you study you'll get good grades on exams.. don't be fooled just b/c he's a good teacher doesn't mean you can study less than you would w.other teachers
This class is hard so you have to make sure to study notes and do the hw problems. Tests are fairly short, but not easy! He is however good at teaching and is willing to help his students outside of the classroom.
Dr. May is the best! Honestly, you will not find a better teacher for organic chemistry, and he is definitely one of the best professors at the university. His tests are fair and he is very helpful during office hours.
Simply the best. His lectures are very helpful -- it's easy to see he really knows what he's talking about.
He studies for his lectures every day to show off in class. If you don?t go to class he will give you a bad grade. If you made a minor a mistake on a test and he remembers that you went to class,he would give you a partial credit;otherwise he would count the whole answer wrong. Not fair grading ?dumber people get better grades just for studding notes!
He is by no means a bad teacher, and he seems to know what he's talking about. His tests are rather moderate in difficulty if you understand the homework. He is not very good at giving partial credit and that is where most students grades fall. Overall you learn a lot and he makes class interesting.
He's smart, he actually teaches the material, and he's definitely a character. BUT there are orgo profs out there who are easier and you will learn just as much if you are able to learn from the book. He's a good guy, but he is definitely more difficult than the other profs out there.
Dr. May is a hard grader! No partial credit or pity points... LOL. Exams are tough and require LOTS of studying. He expects you to start studying for exams 2-3 weeks ahead of time.
Very hard professor. No partial credit. Gave a cumulative final covering 1200 pages from the text book and a WHOLE YEAR of organic. No cheat sheet and no direction. Avoid if you can. Spuznar is a way better teacher. Take her!
nonsense, uncle donald is the biggest baller at loyola. hands down. keep up, and you'll be fine. he's awesome at teaching and wearing awkwardly all-black attire, what more do u need? TAKE HIM
You learn to love the guy. Tests are difficult but fair. Always reinforcing important concepts and teaches you how to think about mechanisms/reactions. Def helped for the mcat.
BEST ORGO TEACHER... explains everything so well and really has a passion for what he's teaching. Organic is hard with any professor, but he's the best at explaining concepts clearly.
Profesor May was a very helpful teacher. However, tests were extremely difficult. Stay Away!! He is way too hard!!!
Very hard teacher. From lecture, the material doesn't seem too difficult but once you get your exams back, you realize that he doesn't give any partial credit. His final is horrendous and he lied about dropping a test. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!
Finally a good chemistry teacher. Tests are identical to the book problems so if you keep up with the readings you will be fine. I wouldn't suggest taking it in the summer if you would like to enjoy your break, but it's manageable. Anyone who can't deal with this class is obviously being "weeded out".
excellent teacher!! tests are hard but if you keep up with homework, they are doable..but DO NOT TAKE IT OVER THE SUMMER...i agree with the person below
dr. may is the hilariously weird and entertaining. definitely one of the best, yet hardest orgo teachers loyola has to offer. tests are long and hard but fair. i would recommend to study your notes more than book. do problems. don't talk during class or he'll freak out. but overall, i would recommend him over the other teachers for sure.
its so refreshing to finally come across a teacher that knows his stuff and is good at teaching. he makes class interesting and by the end of orgo, i actually thought this stuff was pretty interesting. you will have to study a lot obviousy, its a hard class and his tests are too. but you learn a ton. i would recommend him over the others
oh donald may. great professor, with great expectations. go to class, take good notes and study them, and do the book problems. tests are hard but he always prepares you for everything you would see on an exam. once you get to his way of thinking, you'll be fine. one of my fave teachers
eeks! This guy is definetely hard over the summmer! He can be nice but he's also weird. apparently, the tests keep getting harder over the years which is what i have seen when comparing them! he takes test questions to the next level from what you see at lecture so its not easy at all! but he's knows what he is talking about if thats what you want!
May is a good teacher. He is very knowledgeable. He is kinda of weird and quirky but he teaches at moderate pace. He only gives four exams with recommended homework. His tests don't model his teaching style completely, but they aren't impossible. May is a good teacher over all.
if you value your gpa and your chances of getting into medical school do NOT take may. hes a great teacher, knows his stuff, lectures are very clear but his tests suck!no hw, quizzes, or extra credit just 4 tests. tests way harder than material learned in class. a little weird and refuses to enhance the color in his warddrobe but very nice guy.
This guy knows how to teach idiots and explains things pretty well. Dont take him b/c he never assings hw and his damn tests are only 25 points so if u screw up(which is easy to) ur screwd. Do the hw he assings (optional HW) and you should be good to go. I only wish i could turn back time and do that. You'll most likly see those quesitons on exams
Dr. May is the best professor I have had at Loyola. Yes his exams are quite difficult but he's an amazing professor. His lectures and very clear and helpful. Just come to class, take really good notes, do your homework and you'll do well (B or A). He's probably one of the hardest organic chem teachers at Loyola but you'll learn a lot from him.
He is a wonderful professor! Organic Chemistry is definitely not an easy subject, but he makes it so much easier to understand. He explains things so well. His tests are difficult but if you study and do hw and ask questions, you will do okay. He is slightly intimidating, but he is a great teacher.
Had him for orgo 1 and 2. Compared to the other organic teachers he is very easy. Tests are extremely easy. Always falls behind on his lesson plans. Take him if you want an easy orgo teacher. Very nice, open to questions.
He is extremely hard, there are ONLY three tests. If you fail one, which most people did, you can only get a C. Take him if you want a C and a lot of stress before an exam. VERY HARD, other teacher give hw grade, take them. Not clear. STAY AWAY
Dr. May is a great teacher. He could probably teach a 5th grader how to do Chemistry. There are only 4 tests and the last on is cumulative. The tests are difficult if you just study from the lecture notes. Do the homework he recommends and buy the Chemistry Book Solution Manuel so you can make sure you are doing the homework correctly.
Dr. May is a great professor. He is straight forward in his teaching methods and prepares you for every exam. If you come to class and do the homework he assigns you will do fine in his class. The problems he provides he demonstrates in class are more than likely going to reappear on his exams.
hes cool. easy/hard tests. just make sure you read the book and look over his notes. and you set. if you slack off then you fail. if you work then you pass. easy as said
ONE OF THE BEST PROF. Took BOTH orgo with him during SUMMER. Overall easy A/A- if you take him during REGULAR SESSION. BUT YOU NEED LUCK ALONG with your HARD WORK to get A/A- during SUMMER. 3 exams. Final is Cumulative. Grade is based on CURVE. Avg. + 10=B+, Avg.+ ~20-25=A. In short, take him if you want to, BUT there are also some better profs. :)
I took this class a few semesters ago and he gave really good lectures, but he was also a snob. Dont expect to see him outside of class. He makes it clear that you, just a measly undergrad, are not important in his very important world.
Dr. May is awesome!! He is very simple for a difficult course. Just follow his lecture and listen to his advice for the exams. I got an A in both semesters. Much better than other profs.
Dr May is the man! It is possible to get an A in his class!
really good at teaching. writes on the board super fast so be ready. 3 exams(best 2) and a comprehensive final, curves. NOT an easy A. you really have to study hard everyday and do rec. problems! Disc. is mandatory since we do worksheets in groups(each person has to be the facilitor, communicator,or transcriber). But discussion is helful.STUDY STUDY
best 2 out of 3 exams and then final. very difficult and doesn't get a lot of partial credit. must go to discussion. do the book problems. study study study. everyday.
This is honestly the best professor ive ever had!!He makes orgo very simple and straight forward. Exams are straight off the notes and exaples he gives in class. Whoever thinks this professor is hard should serisously rethink thier major in the sciences.
orgo is difficult subject. but may is a good professor, straightforward. 3 exams, drops lowest, 1 final cumulative. i would recommend him. discussions are your participation points, attend!
Organic Chemistry II with Professor May was enjoyable but challenging. He explains concepts very thoroughly and clearly with plenty of examples, but as a consequence his exams are difficult because he expects you to know the material well. I still highly recommend him if you want to learn. He has 3 exams (lets you drop one) and a cumulative final.
His lectures are very clear and thorough. If you go to each class, take good notes, memorize everything in the notes, and do the homework problems then you should be good. But his exams are very hard and confusing. I recommend him if you are willing to devote your time to it.
Dr. May is the best Orgo professor hands down. He teaches in a way everyone can understand and gives a lot of examples. You DO have to work hard and do the problems, but seriously you should not think this is a hard class being a science major. You cant think that its gonna go be enough to go class and get your grade. Not an easy A, work for it!!!!
Professor May is by far the best teacher I've had at Loyola so far. At first, he seems very intimidating and uninterested in individual students- but he's actually quite the opposite! If you make the effort to talk to May during his office hours, he will make the effort to make sure you completely understand the material before you leave.
D May is a rock star professor. Every time that you go into his office he will explain the material to you every way possible until you understand. His lectures are very clear. Honestly, organic is hard but May makes every effort for you to succeed. If you do the homework problems that he suggests and study hard an A is all together possible.
May is my favorite teacher at Loyola, he makes Organic Chem possible to understand. He has a lot of nerdy jokes that keep you entertained in class. Do the HW, go to class, read the text book and you will do well.
He's like Russel Crowe from a Beautiful Mind, a crazy genius. His lectures are entertaining because he does them from memory. Tests are hard but does as much as possible to prepare students for the exams. Doing homework is a must to succeed in this class....
Professor May is an incredible teacher. All of his lectures are done by memorization which is quite amazing. His lectures get down to the core of the subject and are very easy to follow, the book is good...but Professor May is better. Yes exams are hard and long but are reasonable.
Great professor. Actually writes notes on the board and you study based on them. Very clear and curves a decent amount as well. I wish I took him first semester and I would take him again!
BEST TEACHER EVERRRRRR!!!! His lectures are very clear and he's super super super smart. All of his lectures are memorized which is incredible. DO THE QUESTIONS OR ELSE YOU WILL NOT DO WELL. The questions seriously help and there are no tricks on his exams, just read the directions carefully and MEMORIZE HIS NOTES. Amazing teacher and man love him
Best Orgo Teacher Ever! Memorizes his lectures... that is pretty sweet. Just review your notes he gives in class and you will do just fine! DONT BE AFRAID TO TAKE ORGO OVER THE SUMMER WITH THIS TEACHER! i would acctually suggest it
I took orgo1 at a diff. college and didnt remember ANYTHING. Dr May was a perfect choice b/c he made everything understandable and his exams were STAIGHT FROM LECTURE and disc probs. Hes kind of a nutbag, but hes a fantastic prof. Just go to class, take notes, PRACTICE all HW prob's he gives (never have to hand any in).
He has definitely made the course a little more challenging this year. He's wasn't as great as people made him out to be. His exams are tricky and he picks the hardest questions possible.
I mean, it's organic chemistry. So it's going to be hard no matter who you're professor is. May is a genius though and his tests are based on his lectures. Go to class, write everything down and memorize it. Do all the practice problems and you should come out with at least a B
GREAT professor! he's clear in what he is saying, drops lowest quiz grade too! very helpful during office hours. accepts late work. no masterchem required. no book use. tests are EXACTLY what he teaches. if he doesnt write it on the board, you wont be tested on it. go to class cuz he gives hints, but it's not mandatory. DEFINITELY take him!
He is an amazing professor. He teaches very clear, so if you attend class and pay attention its not going to be hard to pass. He is also very approachable and a goofy man. He is awesome I wished he taught chem 102!! Only points you can earn are test and quizzes, there is no mastering chem in this class. Defiantly take him!!!
Professor May is a borderline genius. This means he is very passionate and engaging, which means alot in science classes. However he forgets that we are not, no powerpoint use, no mastering chem, points are scarce and his tests are very difficult.
AMAZING! he's smart. go to class and take notes. if he writes it on the board, its on the test. if its not on the board, its not on the test. if you do your work, youre gonna get an a. hes a great teacher! and hes helpful. no mastering chem! TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May has to be the best at Loyola for Chemistry. He teaches everything extremely clear and what he goes over in class is all that is on the exam. His exams are VERY difficult. The class average on all three was around a 60-65. The final was even lower. If you study, you will do fine. However, no exam is curved and 4 points per question.
He's a superb teacher but his exams are challenging although his quizzes aren't that bad which are what kept many students above the C threshold. You will definitely learn the material but it will take great effort to make a B+ or above due to his tests.
He's a good overall teacher. He's pretty funny and quirky and the notes he writes are good. He said that he was going to change the format of his class to exclude weekly quizzes (killed my grade because I never woke up for my tuesday morning discussion). I feel that if you work hard enough, you will get a decent grade, its not impossible to get A.
GENIUS, BUT...TESTS ARE CRAZY HARD! BE WARNED! I studied for WEEKS and still ended up with a solid C, which I am proud of. He is funny, knows everything, and is sort of intimidating. He is definitely the hardest orgo profs but he explains things so well. GO TO CLASS. An A is CRAZY, like 94% but he curves.
May is a great teacher! All the material is taught very well. Exams are extremely hard though. Quizzes are easy but only make up 20% of the grade. Throws a lot of curveballs on the test.
He bases all of his exams directly on his lecture material and handouts. If you go to class and memorize the reactions you will do well on his tests. My favorite professor at Loyola!
One of the most intelligent men I have ever met in my life. His exams are difficult, but if you do the additional practice problems and go to lecture, youll be perfectly fine. Although he's difficult, he actually TEACHES you chemistry. My favorite professor at Loyola so far.
May is by far the best professor I've had since I started at Loyola. Do the homework problems and go to class, you'll do well. Dude is a legit GENIUS which makes his lectures that much better. TAKE MAY!
Had him for Organic Chemistry 223 and 224 and he is a fantastic teacher. Go to class, take good notes and do the suggested problems and you are set. A lot of the test is based from notes, so focus on those. I was scared hearing about orgo, but if you take it with May, he makes it understandable without making it easy.
Chill out, he's not that cool
I got an A with Szpunar and an A- with May. Exams are extremely difficult, but not as rushed as Szpunar's. He doesn't always curve that much, and when he does, it's easy to pass but VERY hard to get an A. However, an excellent teacher and very good at explaining concepts clearly. Do all the homework problems and memorize everything he says.
May is an excellent lecturer, but not the most approachable. Attempted office hours, gave up due to attitude- he made comments that came off insulting). I also got yelled at for stopping by outside of set office hours on a day I had an ear infection (as post-bac I was surprised at this). Not sure if he cares about student success. Overall GOOD.
Good guy, albeit quirky. Uses chalk from every color of the rainbow. A fabulous lecturer - really gets the class involved and awake. Your grade = 2 (or 3) exams and a final. HW problems suggested, but not graded (do them). Curves based on quartiles. He makes orgo understandable and relatively easy. His humor is almost as brilliant as his memory.
Had him for gen chem and orgo. Amazing teacher...however his tests are hard. You must go to class and take notes. He's absolutely AWESOME. Great sense of humor, really funny, and really good at giving notes. Just make sure you go to class and youll be fine. He's super funny so keeps class entertaining and encourages students to succeed. DEF TAKE.
Prof. May is the man! He's got an extremely weird sense of humor and he's an oddball to say the least but he is a great professor, teaches everything clearly and from memory. Make sure you go to class and do the mastering chem assignments and you'll do well.
He is awesome. Love this man even though his test are fairly difficult. It's not that hard to pass
Its Orgo, it will be hard no matter who you take it with...but May makes his test seem much more difficult then what it should be.
FANTASTIC! I took 223 with szpunar and dropped. May cuts things down and makes it so much simpler. Writes on chalkboard for lectures, so you have adequate time to copy down and PROCESS the info. He actually TEACHES the material. Orgo is not such a huge feat to conquer with May
Awesome professor! He really knows how to teach. This is a hard subject and he really knows how to "dumb it down" his notes are very clear and his tests are fairly easy if you study...I recommend sitting in front, he talks quietly but makes a ton of jokes...Really funny guy.
May is a great teacher, and from what I hear the best Organic Chem teacher at the school. He writes everything on the board so you have time to copy everything down. Really smart, he does all the teaching straight off the top of his head! He truly cares how each person does in the class. Don't disappoint him! he gets a little sad if you do..
A little bit intimidating to approach, but he teaches very well. Just put in a lot of effort in doing the assigned book problems and studying his lectures, and you may do decent. His tests are much easier than other orgo professors, so those who put in poor reviews did not put in as much effort as they could.
He's seriously the best. He's such a great teacher - and his quirks are awesome. Does funny things in class. It's entertaining. Write down everything he writes on the board and memorize it. You'll get an A. He's such a great professor, I loved him. TAKE HIS CLASS. SERIOUSLY. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
Dr. May is the epitome of genius. he is a total nerdy oddball but so humorous in that sense. Taking him will make you appreciate the true value of Chemistry. Orgo is the toughest class a premed student takes so it doesn't help to beat yourself over a bad grade. Forget the grade, If you take him, you'll get a piece of what science is really about.
Starts off easy, but quickly becomes difficult. Third exam has tons and tons of memorization. Make flash cards and you should do fine.
Orgo is a hard subject already but May teaches at breakneck speeds to shove all this knowledge at you. You do not have a break to relax in lecture as you're constantly writing notes. You are expected to memorize almost everything and will need to make flashcards. He's very awkward and makes you feel like you have to defend yourself asking questions
It was a great experience having Professor May again for Organic Chem. I never would have thought that it would have been my favorite subject, but May really makes you work hard AND enjoy the subject. This is class is a hard class no doubt, but as long as you put in your full effort and work hard, you will be fine. May is very helpful!
Hes really good at teaching but his tests are impossible. if you mess one of those up bad it will be a rough climb up. 3 tests 100 pts each;1 final exam 200 pts; multiple discussions that add to point total. good sense of humor but you have to sit up front nd take notes to really get the full experience. not the worst but im switching next semester
Professor May is a very difficult! He is very clear in lecture, but the exams are super tough. The exams are very rushed, students barely finish on time. His tests are very detailed, so you must study weeks ahead for it. He grades on a bell curve, so he only gives out a few A's. He is very stuck up & not approachable. Dont take him for orgo 1 or 2
Not approachable at all whatsoever in person-will most likely insult you. BUT, his lectures are very good (MAKE SURE TO SIT IN FRONT!!!!) and his discussion questions are super helpful. he will test you on details that he may briefly mention once in class-even if it seems unimportant to the main concepts. so BEWARE. he drops 1 exam.
Such a passionate, and amazing teacher in the field of chemistry. I've learned so much, and this is my third semester having him. He is very tough, but he will teach you a lot! I recommend him for anyone taking organic or biochemistry. You will find no better teacher that will prepare you. He is also very helpful. Definitely take him!
Dr. May is such a sweetheart. This class is hard, but May is one of the better professors. His notes are very clear. He is really strict about following directions. He is so brilliant, but a little awkward. When you ask him a question, he won't really answer it. However, his brilliance makes up for it. Tests are pretty straightforward. Overall, good
I liked some aspects about Dr. May. I liked that he added some really interesting comments, but he was off subject a lot and sometimes wasted a lot of time. Sometimes he also made you feel stupid for asking questions. Make sure to study his lecture notes in addition to the book. He adds a lot of stuff.
I absolutely loved my experience with May. He took taking both Orgo 1 and 2 during the summer an enjoyable experience, which I thought would be impossible. He's absolutely brilliant and, and is so straight forward in his lectures. Exams are difficult, but he does not try and trick you which makes them manageable. Would recommend him 1000 times over
took Dr. May's orgo classes summer of 2013. Now i am taking admission tests and i am scoring incredibly on the ochem sections. The stuff he teaches you will resonate with you for a long time (no pun intended).
After taking Chem 224 the first time with Szpunar and learning absolutely nothing, I received a B in May's class easily. He makes the material manageable, which is a tall task for a class like Chem 224. Not the best option out there, but definitely recommended. Always willing to help, a bit condescending but whatever he's a genius so you take it.
I love Professor May. I even have chosen to take him again for biochemistry. He has discussions sheets which are pretty much just like what he would want you to answer during the exams. The mechanisms he shows really help understand the processes. It's an orgo class, it's gonna be tough, but taking it with May makes it less painful.
He's such a quirky guy. He has photographic memory and can tell you everything about anything. Insanely smart, but unlike some genius professors, is able to teach at a level you can understand. He does however go very quickly. But he repeats and repeats and repeats everything to make sure everyone is clear. Taking him for next semester Orgo!!
May is clear in lecture, and make expectations clear, but is totally unapproachable outside of class. Yes, he has office hours, but is so stand-offish that I didn't even want to go. He also has a tendency to sound condescending to students asking questions. Gives extra credit in discussion though, which if you go, can bump your grade half a letter.
Dr. May is my favorite. He cracks me up all the time. If he taught more classes I would take them in a heart beat. Lectures are interesting. He is SUPER smart so you will learn a lot. Exams are not bad if you keep up with the material. Read the book, take notes in class, do the discussion sheets, and ask him questions!! He is VERY helpful.
Professor May is an ass. He is extremely condescending and seems to not care about his students at all. He wants everything done his way and if it is not he gets really mad. Make sure to follow all of his directions on the tests, because if you dont he will take off major points. However, although his character is terrible he is a good teacher.
May lectures very well and tests are to the point. He is not trying to trick you. But he is a harsh grader and takes off points for small details. With him, every single detail maters. He grades on a bell curve, so not many high grades, most of the class ends up with a C. However, hes the best of the orgo1 teachers at loyola, choices are limited
Outstanding professor! Everything written on the board with colored markerschalk. Bring colored penspencils for note taking. Do the assigned chapter problems 3x over. 3 exams ONLY on Mondays. No cheat-sheet or model kits. Discussion sheet points added to final exam. Bell-curve for final grade. WRITE CLEARLY! You've been warned. Ask many questions
Instructor May does not care about the well-being of students or to promote their education. If you do not hand in a test exactly as he desires he will actually run away from you. He is not helpful in office hours and exams are longer than he lists in the syllabus. He writes illegibly on the boards and isn't always clear in his teaching style.
It's orgo... I'm not going to say it's easy, but this class was phenomenal. May is clear and concise and is willing to help if you ask him questions. He's brilliant and lectures from memory, so don't interrupt or it'll throw him off. I came into college nervous for this class, but I love Organic Chemistry because of him. Take him!
Professor May was an outstanding professor for Organic Chem. He is a clear lecturer, and always explained concepts in a way that was easy to understand. While the class material was difficult, he was approachable in office hours and was helpful in giving tools and techniques for succeeding in the class. His exams were to the point, with no tricks.
Professor May is an outstanding professor for Orgo. His lectures are very clear and his exams are not too bad either. Don't get me wrong, you have to study. But he is the best organic professor by far and it is definitely possible to get an A, since the whole class is based on a curve. Would definitely take again!
May is not a good professor. He usually does not teach CHEM 222, but we got him this year. His lectures are OK, not great. The material is tough and May does not make it any easier. Many very intelligent students were forced to drop the class because his exams are so tough. I do not like him. I hear he is a better professor for other classes.
I'll be honest, he isn't the best professor. However, he is clear on what he wants. Don't scribble on tests. Don't write in pen. Tests are actually relatively easy but he is a harsh grader. It is entirely possible to get the right answer but the question graded as 0 (e.g. if the answer is not clear or if the benzene ring isn't a perfect hexagon).
If you are Biochem/Chem major and May is teaching, RUN. He told us that this class is supposed to be a "high fail/low pass rate". I know the material at an A level but grade doesn't reflect. He will take off points for no reason and he is awful to interact with. Avoid at all costs, he does not want you to succeed. Worst prof I've ever had at Loyola
Organic chemistry is a new language. It requires a prof who is very approachable, understanding, and prepares you well for the exams. The key to orgo is practice and hope. Dr. May is none of those thing. Like his last words in lecture, "I hope you found this course challenging." He does not care about his students. I cried a lot from this class
May was by far an amazing professor, he grades tough, but as chemistry majors, we need to be nitpicky about everything, just the same as he is. He has his quirks, and once you approach him, it gets easier with time. Helped me overcome an 8-month gap in Orgo and was able to succeed with a lot of work and determination. Also, very interesting person.
D. May is a poor communicator, condescending, and insensitive. His ego-centric personality overwhelms interactions with him. He lectured from memory & often forgot to include details that then show up on tests. He deducts points arbitrarily and is unwilling to explain grading. Emergency? Family illness? He won't be flexible. His syllabus was clear.
I am convinced Professor May has photographic memory; all of his lectures are from memory. He is a good lecturer, but the examples that he gives in class are easy compared to the things that are on his exams. Exams are very hard. You really have to do every single practice problem he assigns to get a decent grade.
He memorized the whole textbook and teaches based off his memory, which makes him very unorganized. If you do all the practice problems and teach yourself everything you should be good to go.
Dr. May is fairly cool! He does curve HEAVILY! It is not difficult to pass his class if you work super hard. If you do not work for it he will not help you and you will do bad.
Truly the worst professor I have ever had. Says that when he grades exams he keeps mental tallies of when "he owes you half a point" and "you owe him half a point." I asked him why I got points off on a certain answer and he said "you probably did something wrong on a different problem and I kept track of it mentally." No accountability.
Dr. May is a good professor and knows the material like the back of his hand. However, he was not very accessible outside of class and if you go to his office hours, he is not very patient or helpful. His attitude can be very discouraging since he is oftentimes rude and full of himself.
Awesome lectures, clear examples and nice flow, makes jokes. I suggest writing everything. Goes through material very quickly so don't skip lecture or discussion. Clearly explains what material will be on exams and class is curved heavily. Not hard to pass, but not really available outside of class and heard office hours don't help.
I had a horrible experience with him on the very first day. I prepared by reading three chapters ahead before the first day. Trying to make a good impression, I asked him a question after class. He pretended to not understand, and I rephrased it with an example. He refused to answer and made me so uncomfortable that I felt I had to drop the class.
May in my perspective is one of the better orgo professor. His lectures are very concise and to the point and you'll understand the subject from him but then in order to master you MUST do the HW and practice makes perfect! He is a tough grader, 40-45% MCQ rest free response. 10% discussion, 60% 3 exams, 30% final. He goes slower then other profs.
I had May for Chem 223 224 &361 and personally he became one of my favorite professor. He has similarly same grading criteria for all 3 chem classes. His exams are about 50-60% MCQS and 40-50% short response. His orgo lectures are very good but in biochem his lecture notes can be all over. 60% 3 exams can drop 1, 30% final, 10% discussion DO THE HW
Took Biochem in the summer with May. The class is not that bad. HE is not the reason you do bad, it is your lack of effort that makes you do bad. and the final is very hard
Organic chemistry is unlike any other class I've ever taken. Given that it's one of the hardest classes out there, May is the best option for getting a good grade and truly understanding the material. An A- is 81% in the class, and he drops a test. Weekly one-page worksheets for practice. Never have to stay for discussion. Memorization is key!
He knows the material like the back of his hand but doesn't explain it too clearly. You have to teach yourself the topic and then you'll understand his notes better. He's a funny professor but very hard to approach and ask questions to. He's a harsh grader and that's where you lose points on the exams. He's very particular about the solution.
A great lecture. Writes everything on the board and is very clear about what goes on the test (unfortunately everything). Gives practice problems and I find gives the tools needed to do well though it probably won't be easy (he teaches biochem and orgo after all).
I've taken May for Chem 223, 224, and will be taking him for 361 in the summer. He is honestly one of my favorite professors at Loyola. He's made organic chem very straight forward and enjoyable. His class is 90% exams so every exam counts. The final exam if you drop an exam is 50%. Currently I have an A- but that can change because of the exams.
Professor May is an amazing professor. Pay attention to every small detail in lecture everything is important!! Discussions are also important since similar ones are on the exam. You have to know you material or else you won't finish the exam.
Professor May was excellent for biochem over the summer. Hes a picky grader so make sure your answers are detailed. Study everyday. Take good notes. His lectures are straightforward. Dont be afraid to ask for clarifications.
I know everyone has been saying May is a good organic professor, but in reality he's not. He doesn't care if you passed or fail the exam, it's like whatever you do, he won't care. It's not worth it, he made his exam questions are all over the place, like you gotta be a mad genius for this guys class. If pine or osner is free, TAKE THEM they're GOOD
Organic Chemistry is known for being one of the hardest classes, but Professor May makes it manageable. His lectures are a great speed (not too slow, not too fast), and they're very detailed. He takes time to write everything on the board and makes sure to do examples to ensure student comprehension. He makes dad jokes too!
Dr. May is a great choice for Orgo 1 and 2. Hes a real pain for biochem. All info comes from lecture. Every small detail from lecture can and often times will end up on the exam. 90% of this class is brute force memorization. You will hate mechanisms after this class but youll also be surprised by how much you can memorize. Good luck :)
Dr. May is by far the best chemistry professor at Loyola. He literally writes out everything that will be on the exam on the board. As long at you study ALL the notes there will be no surprised on the exam. I wish I could take him again
May expects you to have a crazy memory like him. The smallest details from notes can show up on the exam. He is also a very picky grader on FR. He expects something very specific and will take off a lot of points if its not the way he wants it. Taking detailed notes during lectures is a must. Memorize EVERYTHING from notes for exams. Good but hard.
Orgo is a difficult class, but May makes it as accessible and straightforward as possible. His discussion sheets are correlated with the exam questions, and he posts a previous exam to look at which has a lot of the same questions as the exam. He wants students to do well and his class curve is a life saver.
DONALD MAY IS THE BEST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Orgo is an extremely tough subject and it's hard no matter what but your professor makes THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE. May gives you all the tools you need to do well, as long as you study and do the practice problems he assigns you will be fine. TAKE MAY!!!!
he moves at a reasonable pace and gives you all material that will be on exams. That being said you will need to memorize every little detail from lecture because it's fair game on the exams. He will explain things better if you need it but you need to seek his help. Overall he's one of the best chem professors at loyola
Solid professor for Biochemistry. I suggest you study every night for the course. There is a lot going on during lecture and taking detailed notes is a MUST. The only way to do well on the exams is to write everything down from the book and memorize everything and I literally mean everything.
Dr. May is an a-okay professor. He really doesn't care about what students score or do in the class. His lectures are memory based so they can become really messy and disorganized. I took this class in the summer, and if you think you can have a job and a social life outside of school, you're wrong.
He's an odd man but good natured. His summer 224 class is not that hard; there are comments saying you won't have a job or social life which is not true. This class would be hard with a 40 hr/week job but any orgo class would be. Put in a couple hours of work most days and you'll be fine. 85% for an A is an amazing curve
May is awesome and has a good sense of humor. His lectures are clear and he takes it slow so its easy to keep up. He goes over everything that he puts on the tests so no surprises there. He has a few discussion worksheets worth 10% of your grade and the rest is tests and final
May was a rough professor his lectures were okay but all that matters is the discussions. Maybe 20% of his lectures were actually relavent to the exam. He is extremely picky about the answer you give and examss are free response which makes it much worse. He is not unclear about what he wants but you better know the answer before he asks.
May is the greatest professor I have ever had. Everything he writes on the board is what is going to be on the exam. He is very clear. He is a critical grader. But he's funny. For biochem, we had three exams and discussion sheets which will be 10% of your final grade. Overall, the greatest professor ever, I would take him for ANY class he offers!
This man was crystal clear about what he wants us to learn and was so helpful when answering questions. He is incredibly intelligent and is always willing to help those who want to be helped. His exams got progressively harder as the semester continued, but there's a nice curve and the final was not bad for o chem. I would absolutely take him again
He is very smart, and gives lectures almost entirely off of memory. His lectures are informative and pretty easy to follow. He is a brutal grader on exams, though. And he's kind of condescending when going to office hours- doesn't really encourage questions. For the exams (90% of the grade), you have to memorize every little detail. Good luck.
YOU ARE LITERALLY FOOLING YOURSELF IF YOU DONT MEMORIZE EVERY** DETAIL/PATH/MECHANISM ON YOUR NOTES. NOTESEXAM. Made the mistake of not looking at my notes for the 1st exam got a 69/150. Second exam only looked at notes and sample questions from the book and jumped to a 125/150. memorize your notes.
hes never available for questions. lecture material way easier than exam material. not the best.
3 exams, no mandatory homework. You must attend class otherwise you will not do well because his exams have specific multiple choice questions from the notes. He is easier than most orgo professors, but he is not available often and does not know how to use technology whatsoever. He is also really dry in lecture and at times hard to sit through.
He has not answered any student's emails in the past month, and told us to "stop emailing him." His ignorance to the use of technology hinders learning, as he is teaching by holding a whiteboard to the screen with blurry writing. Although May is "easy" he is unprofessional and apathetic during times like these. Would not take ever again.
Professor May is an incredible man who LITERALLY teaches by memory. Although he was not the best at adjusting to online teaching, he truly did try his best given the circumstances. His lectures and discussions help prepare you for the exam and attendance is essential if you want to pass. Exams are fair and his grading scale is amazing!!
If his class is online, I would definitely not take him. He wrote his lectures on a tiny whiteboard and held it up to the camera after he was done writing it down, and a lot of the time it was hard to read.
He is a good professor that teaches off of memory. However, he is not very approachable for help so get ready to teach yourself. After the online transition he started using a small whiteboard that you could barely read and he didnt even explain anything anymore. He told students to not email him. No SI and doesnt answer students questions.
He's really annoying but his exams are pretty straightforward, you should be fine as long as you study your notes and make sure you know how to do the different problems he goes over during lecture. He was a mess online, lecture videos were superrr long but if you watch them and take good notes (& listen to what he says in them) you'll be fine.
Love him! Hes very funny and his exams are very straightforward. Do all the practice problems he assigns over and over until you get them every time. Hes a little disorganized with the online format but Im sure hes fine in person. Obviously a very hard class but he made it very doable
Never did I have to retake a class until taking May. If you passed the class it's most likely because you had friends who gave you the exams from the previous semester. Written questions on exams WERE IMPOSSIBLE and if you miss one little thing you get the whole question wrong basically. Just saying, I retook it and got an A so just avoid.
While his tests are nothing surprising, he grades incredibly hard. Even in discussion sessions that were open book and answers were copied directly from the book he would find a way to take points off. Memorize the way he does everything as opposed to the book if you want to do well.
Everything you need to know for exams is covered in lectures. If you study off of your notes, you will do well in the class. You're allowed to drop a homework assignment and an exam. Orgo 2 can be confusing, but Dr. May boils it down to exactly what he expects you to know.
Professor May is very unmotivated to help his students, especially if it involves technology. He is very boring and unorganized. All he brought to lectures was dry erase markers. He won't respond to emails and he even sent out an email asking us, his students, not to email him with question. He is only here because of tenure.
This was a summer course so I expected it to be hard, but extremely picky about grading bc he has to meet his "grade quota." Only grades are discussion worksheets and exams. Basically taught myself from the book and HE DIDN'T EVEN GRADE OUR FINAL!! Our final grades posted into LOCUS were our midterm grades. Not the worst choice, but def better ones
Honestly THE worst professor I have ever had. Incredibly passive-aggressive and rude to students. Failed everyone on our first exam with an average of 60%, no curve. I asked to meet with him during office hours to go over where I had messed up and he refused to meet with me saying he didn't have time. DO NOT TAKE!
He was supposed to be the best ochem prof at luc but he goes a couple of weeks without posting lectures to just pilling over double the number of lectures in one week just before the exam. He expects students to listen to 4 hours of lectures in one week when we only expected 2.5 and is not accessible
Not available whatsoever outside of class. Refuses to meet with students and says he has no time. Posts lectures late and expects students to cram them all in one week before the exam. Do NOT take
Honestly Professor May is great in person, once we went online , it all changed. He is no longer accessible, he gets upset when we ask about material, he post lectures late. During our discussion, his iPad died and decided then and there discussion was over. I can't believe how much he changed because of online format. Don't take him online.
He is literally the worst professor I have ever had. Takes off as many points as possible on exams, not accessible outside of discussion. Grade based 90% on exams which are extremely difficult and if you have wifi issues he does not take it into account. Posts 4 hours worth of lectures one day a week and does not respond to emails.
I heard amazing things about May before this semester, but he didnt live up to those expectations once classes were moved to online. He is not accessible at ALL outside of discussion. He barely responds to emails. Grades are based only on raw test grades and discussion handouts making it extremely hard to pass. I suggest not taking him online.
IF YOUR CLASS IS GOING TO BE ONLINE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE HIM!!! I took him after reading good reviews for his in-person classes, and I am an A student. He bullied us, called us stupid, and showed us no compassion during COVID. He demands compassion & respect for himself but refuses to reciprocate. Yelled at me bc zoom issue, dropped.
Since school went online due to COVID, May has become unreasonable in his grading standards, student expectations, and class structure. All lectures all asynchronous and most are him reading off a powerpoint and going on so many tangents. He uses a different textbook than the one he REQUIRED us to buy. He no longer gives partial credit for FRQ. Run
Dr May was pretty good at the beginning of the semester when we were in person, but his teaching skills just do not translate to the online format. In the move online, he sporadically posted very long lectures and explicitly told students not to email him (??). Very frustrating and not worth the headaches. I got a good grade but at what cost
I heard that he was bad but didnt know my lesson until I ended up taking may. With COVID he doesnt accommodate to his tests which are hard to pass. While taking the test, not only me but multiple people got kicked out and the test is timed so I ended up doing bad because it takes time to run the browser again. Just horrible that he didnt care.
DO NOT TAKE! I repeat DO NOT TAKE!!!!!! he is not accommodating at all, he will literally yell at u for asking questions. He is terrible. He is not accessible at all, doesn't have office hours. Will literally give u 3 -4 min during "office hours" so u are better off teaching orgo to urself.
RUN! He is unaccommodating, hates questions, is condescending, his MC questions on exams are not like what he teaches. His lecture vids are just him reading off a ppt or scribbling on an iPad. There are several vids per week at 30-60min a piece, and he posts the last lecture vids like 2 days before the exams. He is awful.... AVOID RUN HIDE
Don't take if the class is online! I was told to take him from upperclassmen before the pandemic, and that was a mistake. Supposedly he would lock his computer in a file cabinet before class so that it wouldn't stare at him. concerning. He is a really harsh grader and his tests are hard to do/very stressful to do in the 40 mins he allows. No..
bro this man sucks he posts so many lecture videos online sometimes two days before the exam, he gives barely any time on exams (40 mins for 20+ questions), doesn't give office hours unless before an exam, gets upset when asked questions, overall rude and tough do not take him. take anybody else seriously he sucks
Dr. May does not care about your exam, he marks random things off and does not explain to you what you got wrong. He just lacks caring and isn't lenient at all. Try to avoid him.
Was not understanding at all. He didn't even bother calculating out class averages so the curve wasn't good either. I'd avoid him for online classes.
Didn't pay attention to students at all and didn't care. He also didn't compute any averages. Maybe he's better in person
This was my second class with Professor May. I had him in person for Chem224 and liked his class structure & thought he was a good teacher, so why not take him for Biochem online? Wow was I wrong, he is unaccessible if you have questions or want any feedback. He also loves to complain about how busy he is with multiple classes? Avoid if online!!
This guy really doesn't care about whether the students retain the information or not, and just moves on regardless of one has a question regarding a topic. Totally inaccessible online and is rude when you ask to meet outside of discussion times. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Dr. May is one of the most unprofessional lecturers at Loyola. Always emphasizes students to ask questions during the discussion however rips you apart if you ask outside of those 50 minutes. I would not recommend taking him as he will not care about the material you absorbed and will move on regardless.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY AT ALL ! He really doesn't care about you and just is worried about assigning work and moving on with his day. Exams are 90% of your grade, and a really tough grader
Really unprofessional. Just disappointing. Was in an exam during online class and he began berating people for asking him questions since he thought his mic was off. Really shows how little he cares about helping students. I would quote what he said but I dont think itd be appropriate. The level of disrespect towards the student was disgusting.
Never answers his emails about questions even when these emails are sent during the day and pertain to the Exam coming-up. You entire course grade is based on 3 Exams, one final Exam and a few graded in class discussion handouts (maybe 4). His exams are tough, dont have much time to answer all the questions, you must be on top of the entire course
Final is 50% of your grade (if you have to drop one of the midterms). Doesn't respond to emails. Berates you for asking questions. Lectures are long and boring and they don't really cover anything important. Exams are extremely difficult and time constricted. Tips: read the textbook constantly and write down everything. Study NMR and IR extensively
Professor May is not innately mean or unkind. It's just overwhelmingly obvious that he doesn't care about his students and their success. He makes exams overly difficult and gives you hardly enough time to look over your work, let alone finish. He is unapproachable and condescending when it comes to asking genuine questions :( Very disappointed
He is really rude, condescending, and doesn't care about his students whatsoever. He doesn't like answering people's questions. The tests aren't terribly hard but are very time constricted and he is THE MOST picky grader I've ever met.
He's the worst orgo professor I've ever had. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He was rude and didn't care about the students. If you emailed him about a question, he would blame it on you and not answer your question. Takes point off for everything. Incredibly hard, have to teach yourself everything.
Easily the worst professor I've had at Loyola as of four years. Online is not an excuse for having such a poorly organized lecture. Does NOT care for his student's success, ridicules them, impossible to contact outside of class and teaches out of the textbook and just says read for yourself and that's it. Accuses students of dishonesty too AWFUL.
Dr. May makes his class so much more difficult than it needs to be. I had to study 30hours a week and pay for a private tutor to even remotely comprehend what was going on, and still only earned a B in his class. Hes unavailable outside of class and his lectures are awful. Maybe he would be better in person, but I wouldnt risk it. Never again.
Extremely rude. He is clearly very intelligent, but knowledge means nothing when you are not kind. His exams are fair, but beware of asking him questions without some level of condescension.
Took Donald May for orgo, and basically, all his lectures were boiled down to what we needed to know without any of the extra bs. He takes a really complex topic and boiled it down to its basics. His discussion sections were basically all about what the exams were going to look like and common mistakes students made.
If you wanna teach yourself organic chemistry, then by all means take him. You have to really work for the grade with a teacher as confusing as Prof. May. Not a bad guy, but hes not a great teacher and with a class like orgo, thats like a death sentence.
Donald takes something complicated and boils it down to what you need to know for the test. To understand the lectures, especially the later ones, you should definitely read the textbook and do the problems he provides (which are optional). He's pleasantly weird and awkwardly funny and honestly made organic one of my better classes.
Memorize EVERYTHING he writes on the board!! Sometimes he makes mistakes tho so you might need book to double check. His lectures are confusing and scattered and dont make sense until the last day of the unit but its important that you understand them bc everything builds on everything. Personality wise hes ok but not accommodating at all.
Donald is a funny dude but his class is pretty hard. It is definitely important to go to lectures every day. He is pretty generous with his curves on tests but your grade is almost 100% based on these tests.
Professor May ONLY WORKS FOR CERTAIN STUDENTS. He worked for me only because his lectures just clicked in my brain. His class requires a great deal of intuition, so if you pay attention and dedicate the time you can do well in this class. Do the problems he sends out and understand them, and learn the pages he tells you to and you can get an A easy
Memorize every single word uttered by him during lecture and you should be good. On the exams, write the short answer the same way he taught it in class for full points. The multiple choice is the real tough part of the exams, and asks for very specific details from the notes. I got a 100% on one of the exams.
May keeps a great pace for the material so that it does not become overwhelming. Grade is composed of few discussion handouts and exams, so it’s important to study and prepare to get the best grade possible. He does not try to trick you and explains exactly what you need to know in a meaningful way. Definitely one of the better choices for orgo!
Definitely take May! If you're reading this and you are trying to decide between him and another professor, just pick May I promise. Grade is based off of 3 exams, one final, and 3 discussions sheets. He drops lowest discussion and one low exam if it helps ur grade but final will be counted more. Just pay attention in lecture and do prac prob :)
Best orgo option at Loyola. Had Dr. Szpunar first semester, and in comparison his tests are much more straightforward. His lecture style is an adjustment at first, but they are very engaging. He's a lovable, funny, and caring guy who wants the best for his students. Has 8 cats! Orgo is hard and a time commitment, May makes clear expectations.
Professor May was a great option for chem 224. Im sad I didn't take him for 223. I love how there are only 3 exams, 1 final, and 3 discussion sheets (with the lowest being dropped and you get to work with others). There is no homework but he does give suggested problems so you can practice. Very approachable. take him!
Orgo is tough but May is great. His lectures can be kinda dry sometimes but his exams are pretty straightforward. He will likely tell you what is on the free response before you take the exam so you will know exactly what to study. As someone who had May and Osner, May had better exams and focused more on concepts than mechanisms.
Organic Chemistry is hard whoever you had, but May simply writes on the board and you copy. No homework but lots of studying required. Do not miss class because he goes over a lot. Write down exactly what he says and make it make sense when you are studying. His exams are straight off off the notes.
Professor May is a great option for Orgo. Orgo is a tough class but he gives a clear grading criteria and gives you the problems you need to know for the exam. Do all the practice problems from the textbook and study the concepts that are sent out through his emails and you will be fine.
Anything bad you might have heard about May probably came from students who took him online. Now that we are back in person... May is THE BEST ORGO PROFESSOR YOU CAN TAKE. I've dealt with Szpunar and Osner. May is by far the best. Lectures are engaging and incredibly clear. Exams are heavy on multiple choice and no trick questions. He is the best.
I took Professor May over the summer and his lectures were so clear to understand and since Orgo is such a hard class already he made the concepts pretty simple to understand. He's goofy and tells jokes which makes the class more enjoyable. Exams are pretty straightforward and do not try to trick you unlike Osner's exams.
If May is available, TAKE HIM. Exams (multiple choice and long-answer format) are based directly off of discussion sheets, notes you take in class, & the problems he suggests from txtbook. Review notes & do EVERY practice problem & you will easily pass. His grading scale is amazing. Six weeks w May was a breeze vs 16 miserable weeks w Osner.
Took him last year and my teachers this year make me miss him so much. Go to class, do the homework to study, and you will do great on the exams. He has a dry sense of humor and will get to know you if you go to office hours or talk after class. Overall, great guy his teaching style might not work for everyone but seriously take him
TAKE HIM. He is a very smart professor and does not use PowerPoints to teach. He does everything on a chalk board and I found it very easy to follow. you are graded on a few things. he suggests problems from the book and you should definitely do them! exams go off of those suggested problems, discussion problems, and lecture. No homework.
He's a humorous guy and his exams are straightforward forward but unfortunately, he is unorganized and doesn't know how to control his time. Spends days explaining basic concepts and then barely makes it through difficult lessons, which is worth the majority of your grade on the exam.
Have to put in the work! Get ready to read chapters and do practice problems. He does provide a summary of each chapter, though. The grade is composed of 2 exams (one is dropped), discussion worksheets, and the final exam. Class is curved heavy but don't rely on that.
TAKE HIM! such a good professor! exams are straightforward and doable if you keep up with the material and understand how to do the problems! You have to work for your grade tho, don't study at the last minute. I only got a C- cuz I never studied and tried to cram it all the night before the exam ( which you should never do!). exams similar textboo
Take May for Orgo! He is accessible outside of class. He makes organic chem interesting. Homework is not graded but highly recommended as the exam questions are very similar to the exam.
Dr. May teaches in a relatively straightforward, minimalistic way, which can be helpful. Sometimes will write definitions or reactions on the board for whole class without real explanation. Exams are respectable, but he DOES NOT prepare students for the common final exam. Highest grade I heard of from my class was 74, many closer to 50 or lower.
THIS CLASS WAS SO HARD!! HE IS UNREASONABLE DO NOT TAKE
Very difficult teacher, hard to learn
He gave me bad grades and was very unclear about them. do not take him!!!
May is the funniest professor I have, he has little bits that he carries throughout the lecture and breaks orgo down to manageable bits and pieces, that being said you need to read the book, do the problems, and go to SI and you will do well. Try to score as high as possible on the exams, because the final is extra hard for his students.
The exams itself are manageable if you attend lecture and do all the practice he provides. He DOES NOT prepare you for the common final at all. I went from having an A in the class to a B. If you are trying to do good overall in the class take a different professor who will actually prepare you for the hell that is the common final.
If I could do it again, I would not take May. His exams are doable but he DOES NOT prepare his students at all for the final exam. I went in with a solid A the entire semester, but the final was insanely hard because bro doesn't prep us. I ended with a B and it is unfair because other professors prepare their students for the final unlike May.
if this is your first time taking orgo 1, DO NOT TAKE. his exams may be shorter/easier than other profs, but i was completely unprepared for the common final. his lectures were incomprehensive and confusing, and anything I learned was from self study. i did not get a good foundation in orgo and was not taught how to think about the subject. avoid!!
Mr. May was the most effective orgo A professor ive had. His course is straightforward and clear. The course is hard itself, but as long as you follow the practice problems and know what the chapter is focusing on in the syllabus schedule and lecture you will be fine. I took this course 3 times and only found success with his class.
The class in general is difficult and will not be easy. I studied for hours consistently. He values participation and questions a lot even if it seems as if he does not. Ask questions and show up for office hours. allow him to become familiar with you as a student and it will help so much. I learned so much from his class and appreciate him a lot
I've never fought so hard to pass a class. He doesn't curve and you're only graded on tests, discussion worksheets and the final. The final was so different from his regular tests that most students failed. He's a good professor overall, but be prepared to work 24/7.
May is by far the toughest grader of all Orgo professors. Does not give partial credit on exams which came to me as a surprise. He's funny but some might find him to be condescending if you dont get the humor. He's accessible, but there are just better options whom prepare you for their exams better and teach the material more clearly.
May is not terrible. Participation is not graded but he writes all of his lecture on the chalkboard so if you are not in class or have one send you the notes there is no way to get them. Your grade is three exams and three graded discussions, which you drop the lowest of each, so there isn't much room for error.
What a JOKE. Don't take him unless you thoroughly enjoy being belittled. He is so condescending, even when the questions you ask are about the CLASS. It's crazy that grown adults, let alone adults that are supposed to be well respected, lack the bare minimum of respect for others and their time. Makes the same jokes over and over again. wow so LOL!
He only grades by a few things. He is not a harsh grader but he is a horrible teacher. He does not prepare you for the final. He is a disgrace to chemistry. I have never seen someone who does not care about his students this much until this year. I would say take someone else but all the chem professors at Loyola are bad so just be careful.
May is the easiest orgo proff. I was worried about the final too because I heard he doesnt prepare you but I got a B on it. He teaches the important mech., not all the ones in the book. I think hes funny and quirky but I can see how some might find him condescending. But I think he means well. He also lets us leave 40 min early all the time LOL
I have had May for both sem of orgo. Overall he is not bad. However he does not prepare you for the common final you are on your own. His lectures dont really help either and he is not welcoming in his office hours. I actually dont think he wants you there. But he tells you what to read and expect on the exam, which is better than most chem prof.
If you want to pass orgo, take this guy. Show up to class, copy the notes down, do the suggested practice problems at home, and study WHAT HE TELLS YOU TO STUDY before the exams. If he says it will be on the exam, IT WILL BE! Exams aren't terrible and he keeps alot of the questions the same from previous classes, so ask a friend that has taken him
Very rude! Likes to use sarcasm and jokes as a way to humiliate students and make them feel isolated. As a professor I would hope your goal is to facilitate learning, inspire students, and have a genuine/caring attitude. He is lacking in all categories. Very mid experience for the money I pay. He should take courses in professionalism and DEI.
Dr May is far and away the funniest and most effective lecturer I've ever had. Go to all lectures, takes all notes, and study those notes and you will be fine. Read the book + do example problems he gives for stuff you're confused about if you really want the A. Can be condescending but is quite funny and helpful if you give him the time of day.
People hype him up too much on here, I am doing well so far but I think it is only from studying other things, not his lecture notes. His lectures are unorganized and you do not really know what he is going over and we are always behind. He tries to act funny and cool with the students but as the year goes on you can tell he is not.
I don't think there is such thing as a great chem teacher but Donald May is alright. He does lectures old school on a chalk board so if you don't go to class, good luck! His class is made up of 4 exams and 3 group assignments that are completed during discussion without access to your notes. This course does require time and practice to do well in.
Best Chem prof. Lectures are clear and simplistic; easily breaks down complex concepts. Exams are fair; he never tries to trick you. Do the problems he suggests in the book they'll prepare you for his exams. Get to know him as a person; it helps a lot when you have questions. Study extra hard for the common final, that's what will tank your grade.
Very old school, all lectures are written on chalkboard and he goes quick. Optional homework, but necessary to do well. Graded on few things. Exams are difficult, but final is 10x harder. Class exam averages are very low/below passing. He's entertaining and very smart, just not good at teaching the material.
took him for 223 and now 240 and may is unlike any other prof i have had most take his personality as an insult but i really didnt see it that way. he truly loves teaching and he always tries to make us laugh with his random jokes. 240s curriculum is challenging regardless of the prof u have. lecture based and limited practice comp to billingsley
He speaks in word salads and you dont understand whats going on until the weekend before the exam. Exams are not tricky, just difficult because its a lot of info. I think if you study in advance, put in the time to teach yourself, and READ THE BOOK, you can do well. An 84 is an A-. 3 exams, 3 graded discussions and final.
The reason he is disliked is because he is unapproachable/rude + doesnt answer emails. I dont think his teaching style is that bad, its a manageable class, but you really have to study in depth in order to do ok on the exams. Every word he says in lecture is fair game for the exam. Rushed thru lectures right before exams. SI didn't like him either.
Terrible at lecturing. Aware that he's fast, but when he thinks he's running out of time goes at "light speed" (verbatim), rushing through material to squish things in. Utterly unhelpful with almost no office hours. Once, he got up in front of the class with an 8.5x11 piece of paper to show us a chart because he "didn't feel like projecting it"
Not sure if it was just me but I enjoyed his lecturing style. He wrote everything out on the board instead of reading off slides, which made it easier to stay engaged. His explanations were clear and the practice problems he provided closely matched the ones on the exams. Also he's just a silly goofy guy which made class a bit more entertaining
All exams based on his board written lecture notes, if you understand these, his assessments will be simple/straightforward. He will post practice if you ask, and is honestly such a silly guy. I think he is entertaining. Def go to class if you want to do well, lowkey also think it will make him respect u- which makes his responsive.
bruh i just dont think dr. may's teaching style is compatible with how i learn. the exams are so scary and if you miss class you MUST ask someone for notes. he goes super fast and can be a bit condescending if you ask questions
The only good things from this class was that an A is 100-89, A- 88.9-84 and B+ 83.9-80 so on so forth and that he drops a midterm, other than that HORRIBLE. He is very condescending when u aks for help. Grades based off vibes and no rubric. EVEYRTHING on the board is what is coming on the exams.
Dr. May is interesting (take that as you will). You HAVE to be present at lectures since he writes everything on a blackboard; miss one and you're screwed. I do not like his grading style, but he is much better than the already existing chem system. Seems like a genuine guy but tends to be condescending.
biochem w/ may is manageable if you attend every single lecture. you will fail if you skip often. he uses no slides and writes everything on the board by hand. sometimes his notes are disorganized b/c he often forgets to label things, but if you spend time deciphering them yourself it's not too bad. he also gives a lot of hints about exam content.
Extremely rude, condescending, unprofessional. Makes fun of homeless and disabled people during lecture. Tries to make jokes but they are offensive and not funny. Unavailable outside of class, will be upset if you show up to office hours. If you ask a question he makes snarky comments instead of answering. Grades subjectively. Him and his cats can-
DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS and gives wrong answers in lecture…
He can be pretty condescending if you ask questions BUT the way he lectures made biochem pretty digestible. He'll drop hints about exam content, but make sure you answer exactly how he would on the exam because he'll dock points (and not really offer explanations for why). Don't skip lecture, study like crazy outside of class, an A is possible.
Exam questions often get very very specific but he's somewhat generous with partial credit. Its a tedious class. 90% of the difficulty is all the memorization. If you survived orgo here than you'll be okay. I also just never dared to ask him to elaborate on scores and exam content lol.
I wanted to like May, he's a funny guy and isn't a bad guy to ask questions to. But his grading criteria for his exams, specifically his free response portion, is weighted horribly. His questions for exams are literally verbatim of what he says in lectures too, so make sure to memorize everything he says. At least at the end he curves generously.
